GUERRIERI RIZZARDI A GIUSEPPE RIZZARDI
s part of our ongoing series of articles about our family of wineries, Lynne Coyle MW speaks with Count Giuseppe Rizzardi winemaker at the Guerrieri Rizzardi estate in the Veneto region of Italy about their winemaking philisophy and what the future holds for the historic wine house.
LYNNE: Where did you do your formal winemaker training?
LC: Do your wines have a defining feature?
GIUSEPPE:
GR: I think that the low residual sugar
I was fortunate enough to learn my winemaking in Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux at both Château Smith Haut Lafitte and Domaine de Chevalier as well as some time in Chile.
LC: What is the winemaking philosophy at Guerrieri Rizzardi? GR: Generally, the wines have to express as much as possible the soil where the vines are planted and the characteristics of the different grape varieties. The Guerrieri Rizzardi style has been and continues to be the production of wines with good finesse, elegance and balance: the length of our wines is a main objective, the power not necessarily.
in the majority of our wines, make them more elegant and easier to be paired at the table with many different foods such as roast meat, vegetable dishes, cheeses and pasta.
THE WINES HAVE TO EXPRESS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE THE SOIL WHERE THE VINES ARE PLANTED AND THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DIFFERENT GRAPE VARIETIES.
LC: Given that your family can trace their winemaking & grape-growing history back to 1649, how do you innovate and what’s next? GR:
Our innovation is in the vineyard for example we are adapting the choice of grape varieties, rootstock and vineyard management to climate change. We have also started to plant some blocks of vineyards with grape varieties recently selected for being resistant to mildew and oidium as well as to other major vine diseases, the benefit of this is that if they work we can reduce even further the use of sprays.
LC: What aspects of the vineyards at Rizzardi do you think are most unique and influential on the wines? GR: The estate-grown and estate bottled
wines because we own well placed vineyards where we cultivate the grapes in major central locations of every appellation, this coupled with the combination of local and international grape varieties creates a unique blend for the majority of our wines.
FEDERICO PESOLILLO & DANIEL STEWART @ RIZZARDI WINERY
LC: What environmental policies do you pursue at Rizzardi? GR: We strive to limit the amount of
pesticide and herbicide used in the vineyards, for example we have intentionally positioned plants which are attractive to beneficial (pest controlling) insects throughout our vineyards and we employ mechanical weeding methods where possible. The main winery in Bardolino is also solar panelled and generates enough green energy to power the entire winery, in addition to this we use lightweight bottles for the majority of our wines.

“While there are plenty of cheaper Proseccos on offer these days, many offering clean and well-made light bubbles, if you want to know why Prosecco grabbed our hearts in the first place you have to try this lime and hazelnut-flickered delight with a very fine mousse and proper, long lasting bubbles. And it comes with a cork for popping joy.” – Tomás Clancy, Sunday Business Post
Made from old vines grown on the best sites on the famous hill of Costeggiola this is a serious Soave. A big step up from standard Soave with superb, concentration of rich, ripe golden apple fruit and a gorgeous honeyed edge. Match with baked Salmon/ Tuna.
One of the most elegant of all Ripasso, the Pojega is the essence of that dark chocolate/wild cherry character that means you'll want another glass! A silky smooth red that is the perfect accompaniment to good Italian food.

The vineyards of Bardolino Classico overlook Lake Garda in the foothills of the Dolomites. The grapes for this wine come from 38 different sites in the Classico region and aged in stainless steel tanks to add complexity and depth of flavour whilst still retain freshness and aromatics- freshly crushed mixed berries on the palate with soft supple tannins and refreshing acidity on the finish.
“Amarone is made by drying the grapes, which concentrates the sugars and gives higher alcohol levels, so sip carefully. 91/100 pts.” – Martin Moran, The Sunday Times
“The world is awash with light, sweetish Pinot Grigio. It won't poison you or your friends, but very few are really enjoyable. The Guerrieri-Rizzardi version, from the Veneto region of Italy, is a happy exception. It has fresh racy melon and green apple fruits, and a very satisfying crisp, dry finish. A mere 12.5 per cent alcohol, so you can drink it solo, or with light salads and nibbles.” – John Wilson, www.irishtimes.com

At Château d'Aussières the project was to revive the Domaine d’Aussières, one of the most beautiful and oldest properties in the Narbonne-Languedoc region. The property, which covers almost 600 hectares, underwent a wide-ranging restoration programme, with the gradual replanting of the 167 hectare vineyard and renovation of the winery. The Chilean property “Los Vascos” takes its name from “Les Basques” and refers to the origins of the former owners who planted the first vines around 1750. In 1988, Domaines

I love this time of year. As the kids march back to school, the beauty of an Irish Autumn reveals itself as the countryside transforms to myriad shades of russet and gold. Further afield the grapes for this year’s vintage are being harvested by our winemaking partners across the northern hemisphere. From California to Vienna, armies of pickers are methodically making their way through vineyards gathering up those wonderful little bunches of vinous potential. Meanwhile our southern hemisphere friends are at the opposite end of their growth cycle, anxiously watching the weather as their vines begin to burst back into life after their winter hibernation. As the days start to shorten and cool, we tend to bid adieu to the lighter and
brighter wines of summer al fresco dining and drift towards weightier styles. But it’s not quite time to resort to the richest, winter-warming oaked reds just yet, as this time of year is ideal for exploring textured and oaked whites as well as lighter, floral styles of red wine.
Traditional wisdom will recommend beer to match dishes with chilli, but there are wonderful wine styles that will also temper the heat. Pair your favourite hot Thai, Indian or Chinese dish with an offdry white made from one of the aromatic German grape varieties: Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris all fit the bill nicely, Our wine drinking patterns are heavily where the high acidity and touch of residual influenced by our diet and with the sugar will complement the heat. For the arrival of Autumn we tend to turn our hand same reason, a Sauternes or Late Harvest to more stews, soups and roasts. For me Riesling are a surprisingly good match. this means the welcome reappearance of Sweet wines are much more versatile than Asian/Mexican-influenced cuisine and more simply a match for desserts. heat in my dishes. This year I am (much to my own surprise) successfully growing a For the smoky chilli often found in central bumper crop of chilli peppers in my American dishes a red wine is my drink greenhouse - mainly mild jalapeños, but also of choice. From Chile’s Curicó valley, this organic Malbec is bursting with blackberry and raspberry leaf aromas. The palate is soft, with a medium-body and light oak flavour.
“The Mornington Peninsula produces some of the country's finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Fresh, piquant, delicate, dark cherries and damsons with an earthy touch and good grip on the finish.” – John Wilson, Wilson On Wine 2019
This is the reason why many of the world's top restaurants feature Grüner Veltliners on their wine lists. This has the texture and richness of a top Burgundy but with a distinct mineral rich style of its own. Sheer class.
Instead, opt for a soft juicy Malbec, or New World Pinot Noir, such as the Stonier below. When my hot dishes stray towards the wasabi heat found in sushi, I reach for the silky acidity and structure of a Grüner Veltliner. Rabl are one of our Austrian partners, producing wonderfully complex wines and their Old Vine Grüner Veltliner Käferberg 2017 from the Kamptal is one of the best I have ever tasted.
Our wine drinking patterns are heavily influenced by our diet and with the arrival of Autumn we tend to turn our hand to more stews, soups and roasts.
For the more traditional Irish roast dinners that start to repopulate our Autumn tables, most of us reflexively reach for a red wine. But if we are lucky enough to get an Indian Summer, I’ll enjoy an al fresco roast Sunday lunch with a good oaked white.
A good Burgundy is the obvious choice, but the wonderfully nutty and complex oak aged Capellanía from Marqués de Murrieta would be my first port of call. The world of wine and food matching is exciting and rewarding, particularly if
you are willing to experiment a little. So, step outside your comfort zone and try something a little different this Autumn. Drop in to your local O’Briens Wine, where the friendly and knowledgeable staff will happily point you in the right direction.

It’s that time of the year again, when almost 2,000 Irish wine lovers gather for the O’Briens Winter Wine Festival, Ireland’s largest wine event. The Festival will take place on Thursday 7th November in The Clayton Hotel Cork and Friday & Saturday 8th/9th November in the Printworks, Dublin Castle, with all proceeds going to our charity partners.
@NiallMoorePhotography
With over 70 of the world’s best winemakers opening 300 exciting wines from across the globe, our Festival is a great way to reacquaint yourself with old favourites, as well as explore new regions and grape varieties in a casual, relaxed setting. You will have the unique opportunity to meet the producers of your favourite wines: from Barossa to Bordeaux, Mendoza to Marlborough and everywhere in-between.
There will also be a suite of masterclasses conducted by our winemaker partners. So, if you want an in-depth look at the terroir of Burgundy or learn of the pergolas of Rías Baixas, you will have the opportunity to hear the winemakers talk about what makes their specific region, grapes, soil and climate unique. It is a rare opportunity to taste the wines with the person who nurtured the wine from grape to glass.
The ever-popular Georg & Karl Lingenfelder are veterans of our Wine Festival at this stage and consistently have one of the busiest tables at the event. They are the sons of the 13th generation Pfalz winemaker, Rainer Lingenfelder, who practices sustainable vineyard management. The Wine Festival offers a great opportunity to taste through the Lingenfelder family’s wonderful range of aromatic German grape varieties.
Musella is a family-run estate and one of the top wineries in northern Italy’s Valpolicella region. They produce a range of rich, yet elegant, organic and biodynamic wines on the family’s 35 hectares. Enrico Raber, Oenologist and nephew of the estate’s founder will be joining us for this year’s Wine Festival. Sign up for his masterclass to get an in-depth description of the fascinating world of biodynamic viticulture.
Cantine Ascheri have been producing varietally pure wines from indigenous northern Italian grapes since 1880 and this year we are joined by Giuseppe Ascheri, who represents the seventh generation in the family business. Together with his father, Mateo, the family practice minimum intervention, ‘unplugged’ winemaking to ensure their single-varietal wines are at their best aromatically and structurally.
Domaine Seguin Manuel has a distinguished history dating back over 180 years in the heart of Burgundy. In 2004 Thibaut Maron, the tenth generation of his family in the wine business, bought the estate and continues the proud tradition of producing aromatic and lifted Pinot Noir from some of the best parcels of grapes across the region. Thibaut’s wines display why top Burgundy is rated amongst the very best in the world.
Established in 1981, Bodegas Granbazán is located in the Salnés Valley, in the heart Galicia's Rías Baixas region. We are delighted to welcome Head Winemaker, Diego Ríos, to his first O’Briens Wine Festival. Diego produces wines exclusively from the local Albariño grape variety from the estate’s 13.5ha of vines, from zesty fresh young wines to a deliciously rich oaked version.

Our teams are full of enthusiastic wine lovers lead by great managers. In this section you will get to know them abit better.
RATHMINES RATHMINES
FAVOURITE ASPECT OF THE JOB
I have worked as the manager of the Rathmines store since 2005. During this time, I have made great friends with the customers and enjoy nothing more than selling great wine to them. I have a great team and welcomed a new assistant manager, Marek to the store this year. Marek is enjoying getting to know the customers and introducing them to our extensive wine portfolio. Working for O'Briens allows me to connect with so many people and share my interest for wine. I love when customers share their wine experience with me and are excited about a wine as much as I am. I am very fortunate to work with a great team of people, we are continually building up our knowledge & enthusiasm for wine and make sure that the Rathmines store is the friendliest neighbourhood store going.
NAAS NAAS
Manager: Tim Goodenough
BEST WINE TRIP I’ve been lucky enough to go on many trips with the company and find it nearly impossible to choose a favourite. From the wilds of Ribera Sacra in Spain, the elegant Châteaux of Bordeaux and the shores of Lake Garda . However, I will never forget our visit to Rioja and arriving at the Marques de Murrieta Estate. This was such an amazing setting with amazing wines.
BEST WINE TRIP I have been on five wine trips and one brewery trip in my time with O’Briens. My favourite would have to be my most recent trip, to the Champagne region in France. Wandering around the 2,000 year old cellars in Charles Heidseck is something I will never forget. On these trips I have built up great rapport & relationships with all my fellow colleagues.
Manager: Eugene Dempsey
I started in O’Briens 11 years ago as a part-time member of staff in our Newbridge Branch. One year later I became Assistant Manager in Newbridge and then Naas. I then worked in head office and our Beacon store before returning to Naas as Manager in June 2014.
I work alongside Mark who is my Assistant Manager, Mike is my full timer and with a great team of part time staff. We all get on very well and try to develop a relaxed and inviting environment for all our customers to enjoy.
For me, I love to meet the winemakers behind our great wines, both on trips and at our bi-annual Wine Festivals. These experiences give me the chance to learn more and share my knowledge with my colleagues and customers in the store. I am very excited about the opening of the O'Briens Wine School which happened early this year in Donnybrook. The school will present us with even more opportunities to learn, taste wines and meet the winemakers.
I LOVE TO MEET THE WINEMAKERS BEHIND OUR GREAT WINES... THESE EXPERIENCES GIVE ME THE CHANCE TO SHARE MY KNOWLEDGE WITH MY COLLEAGUES & CUSTOMERS. I really enjoy our flexibility as a company. We’re never afraid to try something new and we all work together to make the company successful. When I wanted to run a Craft Beer Fair, O’Briens backed me 100%. This has now become an annual event in Naas, going from strength to strength each year.
FAVOURITE ASPECT OF THE JOB There are many parts of my job that I love. My relationships with my customers are strong and I really enjoy meeting them every day. I have advised many of them on wines for so many important events in their lives, Christenings, weddings, etc. This is a privilege and a responsibility that I relish.
