Artist Statement

T

he primary focus of my creative exploration over the past 40 years has been formed around histories, mythologies, religious cosmologies, ancient beliefs in the afterlife, and the tools and vehicles needed to navigate these mysterious terrains. This search has afforded me the opportunity to use art as the lens to explore the mysteries of who I am -- or rather, who I may think I am as I stand peering into the Abyss, or gazing upward toward the Stars for clues. Some of the themes that keep reappearing in my work are: betrayal of innocence -- particularly brutality toward the children; the natural sciences and our relationship to nature; archaic technologies; medicine, and ideas about healing. The investigation ultimately leads to unexpected discoveries of beauty in all of its forms and stages throughout the cycles of life -- from conception to death and decay. The animal kingdom is also a very large part of this story. What is more beautiful than an animal, or an animal’s skeleton -- that amazing framework that supports life? But of all the mysteries that have engaged me, I would say that flight -- and the role that flight has played in mythologies across virtually all cultures -- is at the core of my curiosity and my imagination. If all of the life’s work were brought together in one place, it would appear that all the pieces would be part of the same story: my story, our story, the human story. Creating the work enables me to connect with something larger than my own personal experience. If someone who sees the work has a similar experience, then I’ve done my job.
