RACE : INSURANCE don’t take chances...
What you REALLY need to know about Insurance We ask Nick Sullivan from Towergate to explain... There are a variety of different insurances you may wish to consider when participating in OCR depending on your own personal circumstances and the nature and location of the events you are doing. 1 What types of insurance should I consider when participating in OCR? I’ve listed below the types of cover we can provide here at Towergate which we believe deals with the main risks associated in OCR participation. I have also detailed some things to consider for each. Travel Insurance – provides a range of cover for you whilst you are overseas including emergency medical treatment expenses and repatriation back to the UK, Cancellation, personal baggage, travel delay and missed departure to name a few.
As a “hazardous” activity, many
travel insurance policies will not be able to cover OCR participation so if you have a travel policy already, check the cover
Things to consider – a) as a “hazardous” activity, many travel insurance policies will not be able to cover OCR participation so if you have a travel policy already, check the cover meets your requirements. b) am I better off buying an annual travel policy that can cover ALL my overseas travel as opposed to a single policy for my OCR trip? If you are travelling 2 or more times, then you may be better off buying an annual travel policy. You can also include your family as our policy covers independent travel of all insured persons including children. Participant Personal Accident Insurance – provides set benefit payments should you suffer a serious (pre-defined) injury as well as set weekly benefits for temporary total and temporary partial disablement. This type of cover is not designed to protect your income!!! Something to consider – a) do you have any cover in place already – maybe via a paid membership or as part of the package provided by the race organiser? If yes, do you understand what it is covering you for and do you feel this meets your requirements?

For Elite Atheletes to Fun Runners
Life Insurance, Serious Illness and Income Protection – Life – this cover will pay out when you die and you can choose whether you want the cover to last for the whole of your life or for a set period of time. Serious Illness – if you are diagnosed with a lifechanging illness, this policy will pay out a lump sum; and includes benefits for conditions that may come back, such as cancer. Income Protection – if you can’t work because of illness, injury or disability, this cover will cover your salary or self-employment earnings, help you recover and settle back into work. Get a monthly tax-free income, which you can use as you see fit. You can choose when you’d like your income to start, from as early as seven days.
If you were to suffer an injury whilst participating in OCR would your ability to earn be jeopardised?
Things to consider – a) if you were to suffer an injury whilst participating in OCR would your ability to earn be jeopardised? The main thing to understand here is your employer’s sick pay policy and the extent of injury that would prevent you from being able to fulfil your role (and continue to collect your pay cheque!). If your employer’s sick pay policy is restrictive, or if you are self-employed, you may wish to consider income protection insurance. b) there are a number of additional benefits available via Towergate’s exclusive arrangement with Vitality and the cover obviously extends to include OCR participation. Personal Liability – it’s a relatively slight risk but OCR participation could leave you open to a claim against you in your personal capacity should it be alleged your negligence caused injury to a third party. Most home insurances provide the policy holder and their immediate family residing in the home a level of protection for this scenario (known as personal liability insurance) but it may not extend to OCR participation. Things to consider a) for those people who are particularly risk averse it may be worth checking the extend of the cover provided by your home insurance policy.

RACE : INSURANCE
2 What if I have an accident while training and not actually at a race? The various covers referred to above can usually be extended to include training as well as event/ race participation (if they don’t automatically). There may be limitations to the type of training (e.g. recognised team training as opposed to individual ad-hoc) however, so to make sure you understand the specifics of any policy you are considering. 3 Can I add my family onto the same cover? Yes, our bespoke OCR travel insurance policy is designed for individuals, families or teams. Policies for the other covers we have mentioned may also be able to be extended for family members. 4 Does this policy cover the UK and overseas? Our travel insurance policy can be arranged to cover three geographical areas: Europe, Worldwide excluding USA and Canada or Worldwide including USA and Canada. Most travel insurance policies do not provide cover for travel to specific countries when the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office advise against travelling there without prior agreement, so always ask your insurance advisor if you are unsure (https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice ). The travel insurance policy will cover trips within the UK as long as there is at least 2 nights stay in pre-booked accommodation. The other types of cover referred to can usually be arranged to operate on Worldwide basis also but as always, check the specifics of your policy. 5 Does it cover me for all treatment and any loss of earnings? In respect of our Travel insurance policy, I would be reluctant to say it covers ALL treatments, but the insurer will pay up to a maximum of £10,000,000 in respect of medical treatment necessary, incurred as a direct result of accidental bodily injury. Loss of earnings is not something provided by a travel insurance policy but as referred to above, separate cover can be arranged for loss of earnings/protecting your income which can be extended to respond to injuries occurring overseas that impact your usual earnings within the UK. 6 Can I claim for any rehabilitation costs such as physio or sports rehab sessions? In respect of travel insurance, rehabilitative type
treatment is not usually covered as the policy is designed for emergency medical treatment required whilst overseas. Additionally, UK residents benefit from NHS treatment when back in the UK. This is also the case for our OCR travel policy. Private medical insurance policies are a possible way to expedite rehab type treatment. Personal accident insurance policies can sometimes be extended to provide cover in respect of physio and rehab but these are not usually automatic inclusions so individual policies would need to be checked and understood. 7 Even if it’s not a life-threatening condition, will I be able to get treatment straight away? Immediate treatment (or non-NHS wait list treatment) for non-life-threatening conditions is what is usually provided by Private Medical Insurance as opposed to any of the insurances referred to in this article and available via Towergate. 8 Do I need to pay upfront and claim it back? The answer to this question again varies on which type of cover we are talking about. Any claim under our Travel insurance policy should be advised to the travel insurer’s assistance company as soon as practicable for initial authorisation and guidance. On occasion and when costs are high, the insurers may be able to make arrangements with the relevant parties to make payments on your behalf and avoid the need for the insured to pay up-front. In other scenarios and for other types of claim (e.g. loss of personal baggage) it is more likely that you would replace the lost items and submit receipts and other supporting documents to the insurer who will then reimburse you.
Personal accident insurance policies can sometimes be extended to provide cover in respect of physio and rehab but these are not usually automatic inclusions

HEALTH : MUSCLE GEL use pre, during and post-events
Muscle Gel
“The strength is in the Gel” 25 years ago I had a nasty horse riding accident, I landed on my head and suffered both a crush injury to my spine and also whiplash to my neck. I couldn’t feel my left side, the Doctors thought my neck was broken and I’ll admit the X-ray looked pretty scary. The pain was horrendous and painkillers weren’t that effective. So I resorted back to my oils and a blend for pain, which worked. I’ve since given up horses but Muscle Gel was born out of that accident! Shelley Baker BSc, mIFPA
The ‘recipe’, has evolved into the formula I use today. It uses the properties of 7 essential oils chosen specifically for their anti-inflammatory and pain relieving actions. I come from a science background, all be it genetics and microbiology but it’s the chemistry of essential oils that I find so fascinating. When I started blending oils for my private clients according to their chemistry the results were incredible and so much better. Muscle Gel contains the following essential oils in an easily absorbed seaweed base gel. Rosemary, Clove bud, Peppermint, Juniper berry, Ginger, Plai and Eucalyptus citriodora, which gives it the distinctive lemony (citronella like) aroma. It has an initial cool feeling followed by warmth and as someone has said “it feels like it’s doing good”. It’s not sticky and a little goes a long way.
gel’ with easier muscle recovery time and getting back to training after injury. “Having never run greater than a half marathon distance, and no more than 15 miles in one weekend before, this weekend I ran 30 miles in just under 24 hours in a team relay event, Endure 24. I used Muscle Gel on my quads and glutes between each lap, and am happy to report things are feeling good today. Thank you!” Clare Sheppard If you’d be open to considering using Muscle Gel but still have questions please feel free to email or message me. I’m very happy to give you advice on how either the gel or bespoke aromatic products might help you not just with your sporting injuries but with other health niggles too, including how to improve your sleep and relaxation. You can buy it at www.aromatictherapy.co.uk/products/ and please give the Muscle gel FB page a ‘like’. Contact: e mail: shelley@aromatictherapy.co.uk or call 07968 710853 Muscle Gel “The strength is in the Gel”
Muscle Gel has many happy fans including sports people, arthritis sufferers and overworked gardeners, those doing manual work and even some people going through chemotherapy find it helpful for achy side effects. Some people use it pre-event as part of their warm up and then again afterwards if they feel any discomfort. I’ve had reports of it being used and helpful for DOMS, cramp, general aches and giving a positive effect on post-training recovery. I’ve now developed a bath soak to help ease aches and pains at the request of athletes especially during their winter training. The OCR world discovered Muscle Gel last year and I have many amazing testimonials from people who have found ‘the strength in the

FOOTWEAR : REVIEW four months and counting
Tried & Tested
inov-8 X-TALON 260 ULTRA I am slightly biased when it comes to inov-8 as they’ve always been a favourite of mine. I have, like others, experienced minor issues with some shoes in the past, grip wear, shrinkage, laces coming undone but after trying out the new x-talon 260 ultras it seems like all these issues have been resolved. I have been trialling these for just over four months now on a variety of terrains – trails, mud, road even ice and snow. They still feel extremely comfortable.
Andrea Berquez (CRTS) Certified Running Technique Specialist. Elite OCR Athlete.
The first race they made their debut appearance in was Red Bull All In in Munich. This event had every possible challenging weather and ground conditions you could imagine. It literally had it all, snow, ice, water and rocks, the only thing missing from this one was MUD! Watching the first wave descend from the side of the ski slope slipping and sliding, my confidence of being able to open up on the course started to rapidly diminish.
Here’s the all-important techy bits... Weight 260g Drop (heel to toe differential): 9mm Width on inov-8’s 1-5 fit scale: Rated 4 (narrowest =1 to 5 = widest)
Rubber compound:
Sticky rubber
My time came and I went out tentatively but as I began to claw my way through the course my confidence grew, I noticed I was gaining space and time on competitors ahead and this was due to keeping traction. The 8mm lugs meant grip was exceptional. I was grateful for the improved protection on the rocky sections through the sides and front with the new rubberised front guard whilst still releasing water after the river crossings. I appreciated how the shoe kept me light and nimble on my feet and the unbeaten confidence with grip allowed me to concentrate on what was ahead not what was underneath. My all-time favourite feature of inov-8 must be the flexibility and lightness of the shoe but with all the added improvements I wondered whether this may have been jeopardised but it wasn’t and I was not disappointed.
Lug Depth 8mm Price £135
I would recommend this shoe For more information visit: www.inov-8.com

RACE : TRAINING what’s your excuse...
Too fat, old, tired and poor to get fit? Hands up who’s sticking to their new years resolutions?
Chris Wharton Director, Better Body Group
As we head into the 3rd month of the new year, sadly most of us have started dropping in a few excuses as our resolve begins to fade.
2 I’m too old Nope. Not true. In fact, the older you get the MORE important exercise becomes.
As I head into my 13th New Year running a personal training business it’s safe to say I’ve heard them all. Here’s the top 7 excuses you can stop telling yourself right now.
Ever heard of the saying ‘If you don’t use it, you lose it’. The same thing applies to your body, especially your muscle mass.
1 I haven’t got time I hear this every… single… day. We are bombarded by so much noise in our busy lives, all of which is competing for our attention. With so much time devoted to work, family, friends, TV, travel, email, social media etc... I’m not surprised some people fall into the trap of thinking they have no time to train. But let’s get something straight. This is all b/s. One thing is certain, if you do not devote any time to looking after yourself now, you will sacrifice a hell of a lot more time later in life! What’s more, when you train regularly you will improve almost every aspect of your life. The increased energy, concentration, productivity, sense of wellbeing and not to mention lack of illness and sick days, will free up bundles more time than you ever thought possible. Still think you’re too busy? Jack Dorsey (twitter CEO), Richard Branson, Tim Cook (Apple CEO), Barak Obama, Indra Nooyi (Pepsi CEO), Tim Armstrong (AOL CEO), Tony Robbins, Mark Cuban, Howard Shultz (Starbucks CEO) Vittorio Colao (Vodafone CEO). These people all have 3 things in common1: They all get up before work and exercise. 2: They are among the most successful people. 3: They are busier than you! I’m not saying you have to be smashing it at the gym EVERY day, but you do owe it to yourself (and your family!) to FIND the time to get moving. A simple home workout like those found at www.28daysbetter. co.uk take only 10-15 mins a day, require no equipment and cost little to no money at all.

As the human body ages we suffer from a fairly constant physical decline. Without regular exercise, those over 50 years of age are susceptible to a range of health problems including high blood pressure, reduced bone mineral density and increased risk of strokes and cardiovascular disease. It is never too late to start getting active, regardless of your age. We have dozens of individual clients in their 80s training at the gym on a regular basis and they are in great shape. So drop the age card please. 3 I need to lose weight before I start at a gym You really don’t. Surprisingly common this one. I get it, the idea of walking into a gym full of ripped guys lifting weights and super slim Victoria Secret models chatting away on the crosstrainers can seem nightmarish to some. Even more so if you are considerably overweight. To be honest this is one of the reasons we started BBG. That exclusive, cliquey environment, where people are more concerned with how their outfits look rather than their training is all a bit embarrassing if you ask me. The key here is to find yourself a gym (like ours!) where everyone is welcome. Gyms with a very high percentage of staff relative to members is best. Trust me, everyone is far too busy going through their own battles to be watching what you are up to! If you are struggling with your weight, it’s likely that you need some help. Don’t go it alone.
If you are struggling with your weight, it’s likely you need some help
You are always welcome here no matter where you are starting from…fact. 4 I’m already slim so I don’t need to train Don’t be fooled The fact that you are not carrying a lot of body fat doesn’t necessarily mean you are fit and healthy. A common misconception is that a low

It is certainly worth remembering however, that when it comes to an investment, your wellbeing should be right at the top of your list. A good personal trainer can teach you amazing health management habits. 7 I have the kids with me ALL OF THE TIME Then get them involved. What could be a better way to spend time with your kids than training with them. Every weekend we have loads of families take part in PT sessions together. A great way to encourage healthy habits, bond with your kids and get in a good workout. Everybody wins.
level of visible fat (subcutaneous fat) means you are in good shape. There is a more sinister type of fat that could still drastically effect your health. Visceral fat, is stored in the abdominal cavity around a number of vital organs and as a result can go unnoticed until it is too late. Often referred to as ‘Active fat’, it interferes with many of the organs vital functions. If you are one of the lucky ones who stores very little subcutaneous fat, can eat whatever you want and do no exercise, it is likely that your visceral fat levels are gradually creeping up. Start doing something about it now before your risk of chronic illness disease goes through the roof. 5 I’ve tried everything and I still can’t get in shape You haven’t. There is no one in the history of the world that hasn’t lost body fat when creating a calorie deficit over time. If you consistently burn off more calories than you consume, it is IMPOSSIBLE not to lose body fat. The fact is, every successful diet plan, nutrition book, before and after photo, and incredible transformation all have one thing in common; they are a result of a calorie deficit. A small number of cases can be effected by gut health, thyroid issue, genetics etc. But the simple truth is, even those people will lose fat when creating this deficit over time. Find a way to eat less than you burn off and you will 100% lose fat. 6 I can’t afford it It can add up. Training on the regs can certainly add up cost wise, but no one is saying you have to be personal training 6 days a week. There are things you can do for free to supplement your training. A simple walk and some body weight exercises like squats and press ups will get you started.

Do not underestimate how important your habits are in the eyes of your children. It is no coincidence that children with two obese parents are 600% more likely (you read that right!) to become obese adults. If you stress the importance of nutrition and exercise now, they will be far more likely to do the same throughout their adulthood.
Do not underestimate how important your habits are in the eyes of your children
To sum up... I know this sounds like a full on rant but it’s not meant to be. I’ve being doing this for long enough to know that everyone has their reasons for avoiding training but trust me when I say; looking after yourself is not a luxury reserved for those with time, money and age on their side, it is a necessity to EVERYONE that wants to live a long, successful and happy life. And I mean EVERYONE! Getting in great shape isn’t easy. It’s pretty simple, but not easy! Just like anything that’s worth having, it’s hard work along the way. The more practice you get, the better you become. Technique, form, consistency, progression, knowledge all come to you as you become ‘better’ at managing your health. To quote my old mate George Cooper‘Don’t let perfection be the enemy of progress’. You have to keep moving forward. Searching for perfection can often slow you down. Your nutrition choices and workouts wont always be perfect, don’t let that perturb you…just keep chipping away! A mentor of mine gave me some great business advice recently, that applies perfectly here. I was having a moan and he told me to ‘Embrace the struggle’. Along your journey to becoming the best version of yourself, there will be some early mornings, hard workouts, aches and pains for sure. Time to drop the excuses and embrace the struggle by finding joy in those times, safe in the knowledge that you are smashing life!

HEALTH : BODY testing ourselves
Hypothermia Normal body temperature is around 36.9°C. Hypothermia occurs when the core temperature hits 35°C or below. Around this time last year, I was marshalling on a snowy Saturday morning at a popular OCR. I was overseeing the ditches with waist high water and ice about 3 inches thick. There happened to be a group of charity runners taking part that day, some very brave men and women wearing nothing but bikini’s and mankini’s all running the course in aid of ‘Children with Cancer’.
Patience Keet-Harris Ambulance Technician
“Mad,” we all thought, wrapped up in our numerous layers, “crazy fools, they’ll get hypothermia”. Well... Yes, they were at risk, but actually no more so than anyone else. Here’s the Science bit When the body loses more heat than it can produce then hypothermia can kick in. When the body’s core temperature drops it reduces normal functions of the nervous system and vital organs and, if left untreated, can cause complete shutdown of the organs. It is a medical emergency!!
Did you know, we lose 90%
factor that can affect all those running... Exhaustion. Being tired can lower the body’s tolerance to the cold. We can try and prevent hypothermia developing, the obvious way being, don’t put yourself at risk of lengthy exposure to cold and avoiding water but let’s be honest, we do OCRs to test ourselves, for charity or just because we can. But the good news is we can do something. We can carb load, keep our fluids up, keep out of the wind, limit the time you spend in that water and the big one, keep moving! When standing in a queue at an obstacle do some Jumping Jack’s, burpees, have a good old boogie or even give each other a muddy hug, keep that core warm! Keep an eye on your running buddies too, most will not be aware they are suffering with hypothermia. Look out for excessive shivering, confusion, slurred speech or mumbling and lack of coordination and if in doubt, get help from a nearby marshal or medic.
Look out for excessive shivering,

Did you know, we lose 90% of our body heat through our skin alone when exposed to the cold for long periods and the rest we breathe out? That can happen 25 times faster when immersed in water! Now, bear in mind that we don’t have the luxury of stripping off our wet clothing after every water obstacle, we are therefore prolonging our exposure to cold conditions. While we are all affected differently, our kit choice, our fitness levels, existing medical conditions and older age all play a part, however, there is one common

and lack of coordination Once you’ve crossed the finish line and collected your bling, get out of the cold. Strip off that wet clothing, get dry, snuggle up in that Dryrobe, Swimzi, sleeping bag or whatever you have and get warmed up with a nice cup of tea! Sorry peeps, alcohol is a big no no. Despite its warming feeling it can further heat loss. It’s worth mentioning that we can be at risk of hypothermia even in the summer, so always keep those eyes peeled for the welfare of other runners. So, back to the bikini/mankini group, yes there were body parts on show that no-one needed to see on that cold Saturday morning but in some respects, you did yourselves a favour with the lack of clothing, no prolonged exposure to the wet as your skin dried quickly and you all kept on moving. Well done, I take my hat off to you...
Well, maybe not, it’s a bit cold out there!

HEALTH : WELLBEING here comes the sun...
VITAMIN D When it comes to this vital vit we tend to think of sunshine and warmer days. With the tease of Spring in the air it’s no wonder everyone’s moods are more uplifted but why do we need it? From about April to September is the most potent sunshine and we should be able to get all the vitamin D we need from safe exposure to the sun alone, the more skin we have exposed the more our bodies can synthesize. Outside of this time frame we don’t tend to get enough of these all-important UVB rays. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin which can also be found in foods such as: fortified cereals, egg yolks, red meat including liver and oily fish such as my favourites Mackerel and Salmon. It is responsible for increasing intestinal absorption of calcium, magnesium and phosphate.
Vitamin D is essential for keeping bones, teeth and muscles healthy. It maintains skeletal calcium balance by promoting calcium absorption in the intestines and healthy bone growth and remodelling, a deficiency can lead to a decrease in bone density and put you at higher risk of conditions such as osteoporosis. A lack of calcium absorption will also affect your teeth and could lead to underdevelopment, gum disease and tooth decay. Muscle weakness is another symptom of vitamin D deficiency so it’s definitely worth trying to get in your daily dose whenever you can. You already know that exercise is good for you so it’s even better to know you can get out in the fresh air and sunshine and benefit beyond the actual exercise itself. If you think you may have a vitamin D deficiency, see your nutritionist, a GP or talk to a professional who may be able to give you further advice.
VITAMIN D
How much do I need? As adults, we generally need around 10 micrograms per day. If you don’t tend to see much sunshine or cover up when outside without exposing the skin to the glorious rays then you may want to consider taking a supplement. It might also be worth considering this during the winter months when the availability of good sunshine is significantly reduced, although you should be able to get all you need from
a healthy balanced diet and getting outside. It’s worth keeping a food diary every now and then and working out your intake to make sure you’re getting enough.

RACE : MARSHALLS it might be less tiring to run...
We asked ‘Marshal of the Year 2017’ award winner Jojo Barker why she does what she does, and believe me, she does what she does well. Here’s what she says…
Photo: Epic Action Imagery
Why I do it.
In July 2015, aged 45, overweight and having shown very little interest in exercise for most of those years, I decided to start running or as I call it ‘ralking.’ It was on a whim, inspired by a friend taking on the Great North Run. Andrea had decided not to be sponsored but instead asked people to volunteer either at a local charity, hospital or Parkrun. So, dutifully, I took myself off to Huntingdon Parkrun and volunteered. A chance meeting with another runner – Claire, lead to an invite to my first OCR, Only Fools Ride Horses to celebrate her birthday, but this was 11 months away. I was unsure what taking part in an Obstacle Course Race would entail and wondered whether I would be able to or even want to do it with all that mud, so Claire suggested I marshal and get a feel for it. Armed with a bag of jelly babies we headed off to Pukka Races ‘Diablo’ at Barton-Le-Clay Devil Pits and my love affair with OCR, mud and marshalling began.
26
For Elite Atheletes to Fun Runners
From that very first experience I was hooked on OCR, the people, the mud, the challenge, the camaraderie and the range of abilities of the participants and I wanted to do it again and again. I booked and planned future events to ‘ralk’ and planned lots more marshalling, as time went on marshalling became a larger part. What can you expect from a day marshalling? All weathers, lots of mud, laughter, tired feet, a deep-rooted need to pee and nowhere to go, hugs, loss of voice, tired runners, jelly babies, some more mud, tears – happy and sad, cake, smiles, sore runners, long days, more hugs, tiredness and sheer happiness. A mixture of emotions finished with a side of shattered. So why Marshal? I suppose like most of the uninitiated the obvious answer and probably my reason when I started was the ‘Free Race code’ or the swag. But for me, once I’ve pulled on that Hi-Viz or volunteer tee, arrived at my spot for the day and got involved, the race code, dryrobe, sweatshirt etc.. is no longer the reason I do it, that part is just a bonus. Plus, as the saying goes, ‘there is no such thing as a free lunch’ or race. That’s so true. There are still costs; travel, camping/hotel
There are still costs; travel, camping/hotel bills, food, jelly babies, cake so it can be cheaper and less tiring to buy a ticket, turn up and race
obstaclemudrunner.co.uk
RACE : MARSHALLS
bills, food, jelly babies, cake so it can be cheaper and less tiring to buy a ticket, turn up and race. So why do I and so many others do it?
Support, encourage, cheer, shout, guide, feed, laugh, smile, cry and hug. I have fun and hopefully help the runners have fun too.
I do it for a variety of reasons; the people, friendships & family, the community, health and fun.
Fun – above all things marshalling to me is fun, it is a happy place. It is open to runners and non-runners alike, a way of sharing your hobby with friends, partner, family who don’t want to run. There are so many great races and awesome Race Directors and as there are a range of races out there for all to run, there are different types of races for all to marshal at.
The People – each time I go out on course I am amazed by the generosity, resilience, kindness, determination and focus of every runner. I witness every emotion out on course; joy, fear, anxiety, elation, relief, stubbornness, laughter and many more and I get to share in these moments. Moments of pure joy as well as times of self-doubt and the best moments when a runner overcomes a fear or their nemesis. Friendship and family – every race I attend I am met by friends and by my OCR family, I feel at home surrounded by fun, caring people who inspire and challenge me, support and comfort me, cheer me on, make me laugh, celebrate with me and provide the best hugs.
The juniors who astound me with their ability and fearlessness and the amazing runners who beat personal challenges at all levels
This Community – I am part of an amazing community made up of a hugely diverse group of people, from beginners to UK, European and World Champions, people of all abilities and ages. Marshalling has allowed me to be a part of so many wonderful people’s lives, I am in awe of them all. The juniors who astound me with their ability and fearlessness and the amazing runners who beat personal challenges at all levels. The competitive runners who cheer on their opponents and the elite runners who take time to stop and encourage newbies, talk through fears with runners as they are stuck and scared on an obstacle and applaud them when they achieve what they believed to be impossible. Individuals and teams, we all fit to make a beautiful whole. A community that I am honoured and privileged to be part of. I do not know another sport that opens its arms and embraces all. Health – not everyone is aware, but I live with chronic pain, PTSD, anxiety and depression. I share my life with these cruel housemates, and it isn’t always fun, but OCR, marshalling and the OCR community have given me so much. A support network, a purpose – when my housemates are causing trouble, my body and mind are hurting and I just want to hide away, OCR doesn’t let me. It refocuses me, stops me from wallowing, the inspiring members of my OCR family cheer me on as I cheer them on the course. Marshals are absolutely vital members of the race day team, without them races cannot go on. Race Directors need support, runners need to be safe, obstacles need to be manned and so I stand up to my housemates, pull on my trail shoes, apply my race day red lippy, face my race day challenge and go and do what I love.

RACE : DOWNTIME have you taken time to rebuild?...
The off season It’s been cold, right? It’s my excuse for an extra layer of insulation Actually, it’s high time I stopped being forever prepared for winter, it’s no wonder I never quite make it on time for that summer body. Regardless of what you’ve been gifted on the outside, that body is actually ready for summer or winter no matter what. The beauty of OCR is that anyone can do it, you don’t have to be a certain shape or a certain age or certain height (although this does carry difficulties for those more vertically challenged) besides, what matters is the engine within. So, what does everyone do over winter when races are scarce? No one REALLY wants to go and train outside do they? Well now is the time to get that engine fully serviced, break the parts down, give them a good rest, fine tune and rebuild slowly ready for the race season and I’ve come to realise that you can’t just put a sticky patch over those slight niggles that keep bubbling away just beneath the surface because you just know that one day that slight niggle is gonna be the one thing that catches you out big time. It’s time to strip back to the bare beginning and do a careful, sensible rebuild of yourself. Balance is key here and I don’t just mean in the literal sense, although doing some solid core work is a good place to start. If you’re unsure where to start then invest some time, and money if you need to in a professional. You will reap the benefits 10-fold not just later in the season but from the very moment you start to look after you. Not only will your engine be running trouble free but you’ll understand what drives you forwards as opposed to doing what I’ve managed to do so far which tends to be more a ’2 steps forwards and 3 back’ kind of pattern. I wish I’d taken the time to rebuild years ago. So, that’s your decision made, to prep for this year and the amount of preparation really depends upon your goals for the coming season. If you’re very much a fun runner and all about having laughs with friends in the mud then you can take this much less seriously than those athletes who are really going for it. The UK are set to host the Obstacle Course Racing World Championships again this year so for those in that category, this is absolutely key for you. Everything you do this year will be focussed towards that triumphant moment where you toe the start line with the very best of the best of the best from all around the world. You cannot afford to go from injury to injury this year. What is it they say? To build a house you need a solid foundation, that exact philosophy applies here too. Your health is worth investing in. I suppose now is also a good time to remind you that your health isn’t just physical. We’re all aware of mental health but do we ever stop and take stock about how WE might be feeling within, or our family around us for that matter? OCR is a time-consuming sport to those who compete at the higher end of the scale and we really do put pressure on ourselves to constantly be better. We train all week and race at the weekend, that’s tough for even the most understanding partner. Please remember to STOP from time to time and show those around you how very much they are appreciated. Down time with family, friends and loved ones is as nurturing for the soul as any PB. Grab those opportunities with both hands and embrace them.
Sometimes, your time, is all it takes.

RACE : PERFORMANCE don’t lose your momentum
Do you know your peacocks feather? Can you remember last Christmas? You probably enjoyed some cracking food, countless treats, and the thought of smothering yourself in the mud pits of an OCR event were a distant memory…at least for a day or two.
Graham Roberts Performance Coach and Behavioural Change Consultant at Ispire Motivational Coaching Ltd, gives us an insight into a world. I think most of us can relate.
motivational coaching
The New Year comes around, and whether you subscribe to the idea of a resolution or not, you set yourself some goals or targets for the year to better yourself in some aspect of your life. January rumbles on, you are potentially drier on the inside than on the out (depending on where the polar vortex lands), and your momentum towards those goals starts to slow down. There can be several reasons why this might be. New responsibilities come up that compress your time, and before you know it, you’ve forgotten exactly what your goal was, or, you feel frustrated that you haven’t got the capacity to put the time in you want to. Old responsibilities – the ones that you accept and make compromises for all year round start up again, and all that relaxed bliss you had at Christmas disperses like milk when you make a cup of tea, and again you haven’t got the time or motivation to get back after your goals. Or, the enthusiastic pursuit of performance improvement just loses all its steam.
That headspace that we give ourselves allows us to reengage with what’s important, what changes we would like to make, and re-energises ourselves to have the drive to get after what we truly want. But what’s to stop you reviewing when the race season starts, and plotting a smarter training plan that aims to harness that energy over a longer period of time? Why not use NOW to really plan your race season, how your training needs to be structured and periodised so you come into your first block of races in peak condition, physically, mentally and nutritionally. Having a chat with one of the many qualified OCR coaches around the country could be the starting point to your best year yet. Know your peacocks feather…
Truth of the matter is, there are often lots of reasons why we lose our momentum towards our goals, and sometimes no answers. Here are a couple of ways to reframe goal setting and goal pursuit, so you can keep your momentum towards your targets continuing into the year.
30
Who said January was when you needed to start? Resolutions are often set because the period over Christmas gives us time to relax, take the foot off the gas, and take stock of what’s important to our lives – bringing new perspectives from a place that feels like an elevated position.
For Elite Atheletes to Fun Runners
Say you’ve mastered the January dip, and you’re well into February or March and everything seems hunky-dory for once. How are you going to sustain that momentum throughout the season?
The temptation might be to think that you’ll be fine and all will be good in the weeks and months ahead...
The temptation might be to think that you’ll be fine and all will be good in the weeks and months ahead, but research shows not one athlete ever has been able to ride the crest of a wave for a whole season without awareness of the support network around them to work through the ebbs and flows of a season.
obstaclemudrunner.co.uk
RACE : PERFORMANCE
The great news is you can raise your awareness of your support network simply by mapping your peacocks’ feather of the world around you. To do this, take a plain piece of A4 paper and pen. Orientate the paper in landscape, and strafe out four lines from the centre-bottom of the page to the outside edges (a bit like looking at a peacock with its feathers out). Now, in between each line, list all the people, activities and items within your world that you can reach out to or lean on for support when things are going both great and not so great. Place the things that are the most important to you closer to the centre, and theme the things you list into different categories, such as family/loved ones, friends and networks, relaxing activities etc. Take at least 10-15 minutes to populate your peacocks feather of support, and throughout the season when you need to reach out to your world for support, know you can do it with the confidence that reaching out will lessen the impact of any bumps in the road, and keep you focused on pursuit of your important goal.

FOOTWEAR : CLOUDTEC® floating on foam...
Let’s get it Swiss sports brand On develops a new cushioning innovation – the specially developed Helion™ foam. For nine years, Swiss sports brand On has inspired the running scene with its unique CloudTec® technology.
Helion™ is a lighter, softer, and more agile foam for a ride that feels more alive every step of the run.”
Now, the company announces its latest industry disrupting innovation with the launch of the Cloudswift performance running shoe, the first shoe to feature On’s new Helion™ superfoam.
The all-new Cloudswift is made for urban runners who like to keep their shoes light and swift yet still have superior cushioning and road protection. While newly shaped Cloud elements on the sole collapse diagonally to increase horizontal cushioning, durable rubber reinforcements provide enhanced traction. In the forefoot, Cloud elements connect at the central channel for a more directional push-off without energy loss.
The Helion foam combines properties other foams can’t, delivering durability and rebound at a previously impossible level. Since no other foam was able to offer what we wanted, we decided to build our own. The unique new On Helion™foam is formed of a special structure fusing stable, hard elements and softer, elastic segments. This enables greater durability without adding weight and more rebound without sacrificing cushioning. Thanks to its temperature resistance capability, the cushioning stays premium – no matter if it’s cold or warm outside. Its enduring energy-return properties offer protection from the road and performance for the run. “’No compromises’ was the mantra when we set out to create this new superfoam,” explains Olivier Bernhard, On Co Founder and multiple Ironman champion. “As a runner, you need your shoe to perform at its best so you can too. You won’t say yes to second best.

FOOTWEAR : REVIEW when the going gets tough
The mud running shoe with the world’s toughest grip British-born brand inov-8 have launched the ultimate shoe for running through mud. The new MUDCLAW G 260 is the first-ever shoe in this category to utilise graphene – the planet’s strongest material. 200 times stronger than steel, graphene has been infused into the rubber outsoles, making the studs stronger, more elastic and harder wearing. inov-8 Product & Marketing Director Michael Price said: “The rubber studs look more like claws or fangs. Through extensive testing we have found that these new shaped studs give the best possible traction when running or obstacle racing over muddy terrain and, unlike racing spikes, also provide underfoot comfort on harder ground. “By adding wonder-material graphene to the rubber it makes the studs 50% stronger, 50% more elastic and 50% harder wearing – statistics scientifically proven by graphene experts at The University of Manchester, whom we have collaborated with on this project.
MUDCLAW™ G 260
orienteers and cross-country athletes, all whom regularly run or compete in muddy conditions, are on sale now priced at £140 from www.inov-8.com and selected retailers. Amongst the athletes to have rigorously tested the MUDCLAW G 260 is international Great Britain mountain runner Ben Mounsey. The 37-year-old has been wearing a prototype pair of the shoes for several months and has clocked up more than 1,100 miles in them. During that time inov-8 have also worked to further improve other elements of the shoe, including the durability of the upper materials. Mounsey, an inov-8 ambassador, said: “I’ve been blown away by these shoes. I’ve never got such good mileage out of a pair of running shoes. The grip when running over soft and muddy ground is the best I’ve ever known.” inov-8 first used graphene in their TERRAULTRA G 260 shoe – an award-winning product launched last summer for runners who train and race over hard ground trails. The brand also sells graphene grip footwear specific for hikers and crossfitters.
“Since 2003 we have carved out a worldwide reputation for designing off-road running shoes with the best grip. Now, by pooling all our expertise and learnings from those last 16 years, we have taken it to a new level, delivering footwear with the world’s Graphene is produced from graphite, which was first toughest grip.” The world’s toughest shoe for the world’s toughest muddy mountain runs and obstacle races. FOOTWEAR : ENVIRONMENT a new approach
Energy saving We’ve all heard of energy saving for a cleaner greener planet, but how about an energy saving shoe? Well, ASICS have turned the world of running on its head as it revealed a completely new concept in run efficiency, METARIDE™. One of ASICS’ most important innovations in seven decades, and as part of ASICS’ ambition to help all runners to WIN THE LONG RUN, the shoe was designed with one purpose in mind; to make running longer distances easier. Developed over two years by a team of scientists and designers at the ASICS Institute of Sport Science (ISS) in Kobe, Japan, METARIDE™ is precision engineered to minimize movement in the area where most energy is expended; the ankle joint. Scientifically proven to offer a total reduction of energy loss at the ankle joint by almost one fifth1, the
01732 452404
difference could be seismic for long distance runners who want to achieve their full potential. The key to creating the most efficient run possible was the discovery of new revolutionary GUIDESOLE™2 technology; a precision-shaped curved sole that works by shifting the body weight forward and propelling runners on to give the feeling of effortless motion. The result? An energy-saving shoe that provides a new running sensation with the potential to significantly improve performance and protection to help runners of every level keep going longer than they thought possible. continued...

Featuring multiple proprietary technologies in an all-new radical design, METARIDE™ successfully optimizes all three phases of the gait cycle to create a completely different kind of running shoe. In tests, METARIDE™ has been scientifically proven against conventional running shoes in the category to; n reduce total energy loss at the ankle joint where most energy is expended n improved static fit and grip to reduce ankle movement throughout the stride whilst also maintaining stability and durability3 n feel like a new running experience Kenichi Harano, Executive Officer and Senior General Manager at ISS comments on how METARIDE™ breaks new ground in long distance running. “The METARIDE™ concept and new GUIDESOLE™ technology are fundamentally different to any other shoe we’ve ever made or that’s on the market today. We looked at run efficiency in a uniquely ASICS way to provide a new ‘feel’ whilst maintaining our promise of performance and protection.” Representing the pinnacle of ASICS innovation, the METARIDE™ is the first in ASICS’ new energysaving franchise, which will make the same concept and technologies available to more runners at different price points. A takedown model is planned for release this autumn. Yasuhito Hirota, ASICS President and COO said METARIDE™ demonstrates ASICS’ commitment to continue to accelerate how runners move through cutting-edge product and services. “We believe this new technology has the potential to disrupt the world of long-distance running. Our athletes and runners have told us that METARIDE™ is already transforming how they train, race, run and recover. This is just the beginning of a new era for ASICS as we bring the best innovations to our fans while attracting a new generation of runners.” Runners will be able to put the new shoe to the test with the WIN THE LONG RUN™ program, coming soon to the RUNKEEPER™ app. The feature includes a series of five guided runs to help runners incorporate more variety in their training, improve endurance and run more efficiently. The experience is designed to inspire participants to go beyond the finish line to meet their next milestone.
