Printing and Painting – Place and Memory

“Before it can ever be a repose for the senses, landscape is the work of the mind. Its scenery is built up as much from strata of memory as from layers of rock.” Simon Schama In response to this quote, we will explore notions of memory in relation to place, both in the landscape and home. Using stamp, transfer and screen-print techniques to create repeat patterns, we will make layered mixed media works, employing a range of mark making processes and materials. Working over a series of days, we will build up layers with washes of inks, acrylics and oils; the process allows for a personal outcome and could lead to a series of works or a final piece. Please bring photos of places of personal significance, as well as any fabric or wallpaper scraps from the home. This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience and would allow the student to build up their portfolio for further study.

Puccini and his critics

Hugely popular with audiences today, Puccini’s operas prompted a critical hullabaloo during his own lifetime. Despite the fact that Puccini was not a political man, his operas got dragged into the hot debates of the day, on topics from nationalism to gender politics. Controversial too was the question of where his works stood in relation to the history, and future, of opera itself. Through a series of case studies, Puccini expert Dr Alexandra Wilson will illuminate how much-loved operas including Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Turandot fit into the political, social and cultural contexts of early twentieth century Italy. Alexandra Wilson is author of two books on opera, has presented numerous broadcasts for BBC Radio 3, and has written programme essays and given educational talks for the Royal Opera, ENO and Glyndebourne.

1 day workshop When: Saturday 1 June Time: 10am – 4pm Where: Richard Hamilton Building, Oxford Brookes University Tutor: Alexandra Wilson Course code: PUC13 Cost: £65 Book online at: www.arts.brookes.ac.uk/ arts/registration/
