St. Augustine houses creatives of all types. Get to know the artists who make the homes of this city beautiful and extraordinary.

HELLO

WELCOME HOME

I

In real life, I am a graphic designer so I get to be similarly as creative creating magazine layouts and advertisements. But I didn't start out in that career direction – I actually started to explore my design interests in drafting class my Sophmore year of high school. Back then, I saved every single home plan that was printed in Southern Living magazine, so my mom suggested taking a gander at what architecture was really all about. Drafting class was the first (very boring) step and – plot twist – it just wasn't for me. I learned a valuable take away that while I love home design, I don't love the precision (and time) it takes to be an architect. The same goes for being a legit home builder and interior designer. Truthfully, the technical aspect of each just isn't for me.

Social media is exhausting, but I worked my fanny off on shoot days to give you a behind-the-scenes look at what we were up to. Hopefully you liked following along. And if you missed it, follow us on Instagram for our #BTS stories.

But lucky for you, St. Augustine is overflowing with talented home experts whose natural skills carried them through the long hours of study and hard knocks it takes to come out on top these days. And they're profiled right here in this issue. These people are home builders, contractors, interior designers, craftsmen, and shopkeeprs who are passionate about helping you make your house a home. It's not just their business...it's their God-given talent. And that's something incredibly special. I am in awe of the work they create and enjoy the role I get to play celebrating their passion with you in this issue. This spring, real estate values are a buzz. HGTV has everyone looking for their inner Chip and Joanna Gaines, and everyone is on the hunt to keep perfecting their space. And if you can relate to the above...you should find exactly what you're looking for in this issue.

ABOUT THE COVER

Home is a lot more than just a place where you live. You live in a house, an apartment, a condo. But “home” is the place where your family is, where you feel most comfortable, where your life and your story is built into the walls.

O

T here goes Moll

ur Home Issue is more than merely articles about people that build decor or sell houses or work on structures. We explore and highlight the creation of something more. It is a collection that celebrates the people that turn houses into homes.

For us, Nick and Christie and their Urban Asado grill created fellowship and friendship and family. When we photographed their grill, we were able to experience first hand the atmosphere that such a piece cultivates. We gathered around the flames and the sizzling meal and, though most of us had never met Nick and Christie before, spent the whole evening laughing like old friends. For us, Urban Asado represented more than just decorating, building, or creating a house. It represented the feel and the joy of family and of home.

Some people like roughing it – exposure to the elements, no running water, nothing but a sleeping bag between you and the earth. For others, camping is great just as long as you have air conditioning, indoor plumbing, and a comfy bed.

The tapping of metal riggings on shrimp boats anchored in the river near the Collaborative District, Urban Asado’s home, can be heard as the owner, Nick Carrera, shares the details of his business. Urban Asado makes handcrafted grills based on concepts seen and experienced in Argentina by Nick. The Spanish word “Asado” simply means “Grill.” But put to rest all you know about grills. These asados are based on a simple design that doesn’t utilize the traditional hood or any bulky accessories. The heat comes from burning wood beneath a crank-driven grill that moves up and down to adjust the cooking time and temperature. A drip pan catches all the natural juices from the roasted meat (which are often utilized in the cooking). The open-air flame delivers real

Nick remembers this type of grilling from his childhood, “Growing up, we had family and friends over and everyone brought something to eat or to put on the grill. It was a time to socialize and to enjoy being with one another. There was no rush to eat certain courses at specific times. The cooking over the open fire was the experience. We ate here and there as things were finished cooking.” These wonderful childhood memories of family gatherings stayed with Nick as he and his wife, Christie, continued the tradition with their children.

We realized that we couldn’t take time for granted. If you’re always looking for the perfect scenario when everything lines up, you’ll never do anything. We had to make this happen, do what we enjoy, and show our kids how to move on your dream.” Urban Asado is a business that’s about more than just grilling. It’s about the company of people during the experience of grilling. Nick smiles, “Gathering around an open flame and cooking food is communal. REVIVAL HOME By Shannon O'Neil

Where most of us see piles of discarded junk at an estate sale, Amanda Alton sees stories. With a discerning eye and creative mind, Amanda finds pieces with a past and gives them a future through her furniture restoration business, Revival Home & Co. “I look for something that just speaks to me and has good bones,” says Amanda. “I especially love items that are really worn and old, with some natural grooves that tell a story.” At a recent estate sale, Amanda snagged a boxy wooden ice chest she repurposed into a beautiful nightstand. Some of Amanda's projects can be found for sale at the Collaborative District on Riberia Street, but she also enjoys doing custom work for clients. “If you have something your grandma gave you that you love, but it doesn’t fit your style, we can change a few things and fix it up so it stays in the family and fits in your home.” In addition to furniture rehab projects, Amanda also provides interior design consulting for clients looking to create a home aesthetic that’s gorgeous, comfortable, and purposeful, too. www.facebook.com/revivalhomeandco

ust one look at Austin’s laid back demeanor and it is clear that he is a man of nature. “The people who are drawn to wood and nature," he says, "You can just tell when they are talking about it. They light up, and there is something really cool about that.” Those words clarify the peace Austin is feeling now as he finds himself turning towards his unique calling. The path to his passion was full of twists and turns. He graduated Flagler College with a degree in Business Management, moved to South Beach to be a DJ for seven years, and then returned to St. Augustine to pursue a career in real estate. This career helped segue into the fulfillment of a lifelong passion, creating masterpieces of wood through Old Town Timber. “Folks that are house hunting are usually focused on design aspects for their new space," he says, "I’m now involved in all aspects.” Austin’s father Len Weeks has been a craftsman and builder in St. Augustine since the '80s. Austin has warm memories of helping his father in his shop as a young boy and accompanying his father on architectural tours to cities like Miami, and of course St. Augustine. An avid collector of wood, Austin finds treasure

everywhere. He combs the beach, visits teardowns, and never passes by a discarded pile of old lumber. One of the favorite aspects of his work is the transformation. “Taking pieces of mangled wood out of dumpsters and turning them into a unique piece of furniture that will stay with families for generations is special." He smiles. "It’s also pretty cool to see the look on the customer’s face when they see the piece for the first time.” Austin’s favorite piece at the moment is a tree light installation at the Yoga Collective. He also just created a unique bathroom/dressing room space at Panache salon. The walls are tree limbs with the nubs being the clothing hooks. He says, “I like taking normal stuff and giving it a twist." One of those twists comes in the form of fluorescent tables and fixtures. This is achieved by mixing powder into resin and then pouring it into the nooks and crannies of the wood. The result is a glow-in-the-dark finishing which is perfect for backyard entertaining. Austin is currently cultivating a plan for a storefront, which will house all of his unique creations. Oh, the stories those pieces will tell. www.oldtowntimber.com

LET'S GET GARDENING Each issue, we’ll learn new organic gardening techniques that improve soil, vegetable production, and our environment, helping you grow your best garden yet in St. Augustine. By Shelby Stec

PREPPING YOUR SUMMER GARDEN IN ST. AUGUSTINE

Vegetable gardens in Florida are often plagued by pests and disease. While you may blame your “black thumb,” our lack of soil and hot, humid climate are the real culprits. I know it’s tempting to reach for pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers but these chemical-based sprays kill soil and the beneficial insects needed to keep garden ecosystems in check. Investing in good soil, selecting healthy plants, planting at the right time, and encouraging beneficial insects with pollinator herbs and flowers will help keep pests at bay. Hand picking bugs your first year instead of spraying pesticides will help build your beneficial insect population.

1

COMPOST & CONTAIN To start your summer garden, you’ll need a raised bed that is 16” deep or a 5 gallon pot for each plant. If you are growing in a raised bed make sure your soil base is a good compost mixture with lots of organic matter. Organic matter can be anything from decayed leaves to composted mulch, veggie scraps, or manure. For potted gardens, I use Fox Farm potting soil or a homemade mix of 2 parts finished compost, 2 parts pine bark fines, 1 part perlite, and 1 part worm castings. Then it's time to cap it off with mulch. To cool the soil and save on water, mulch your garden beds and pots with wheat straw or leaves. Mulch ensures water does not evaporate as quickly and helps prevent weeds. Be sure not to use pine straw as it is too acidic and always make sure the straw or hay you purchase is free of seeds.

30

2 SELECT SEEDS Our spring/summer garden season begins in March and ends in September. While it is possible to grow a year round garden in Florida, pests and diseases become more prevalent with hot weather. Beans, cantaloupe, cucumber, sweet peppers, pumpkin, summer squash, winter squash, tomatoes and tomatillos should be planted by May 1. However, early plantings lead to more bountiful harvests. Hot weather plants such as eggplant, okra, hot peppers, and sweet potatoes can go in the ground as late as July.

3 HELPING IT GROW Giving plants the right amount of space encourages stronger root growth, prevents disease, and ensures each vegetable is receiving enough nutrients. Okra, peppers, and basil should be spaced 12-18 inches apart, while tomatoes and tomatillos need at least 18 inches. Squash, melons, pumpkin, and bush cucumbers take up the most space and should be planted at least three feet from their neighbors.

Locally, Southern Horticulture has the best selection.

To save space, consider pole beans and vining cucumbers that you can trellis up or place sprawling plants at the edge of your garden and allow them to grow into the yard.

You can also order seeds online from Seed Savers Exchange, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, or Baker's Creek Heirloom seeds.

Once your garden is planted keep the soil evenly moist and check your plants for pests weekly. Expect your first harvest within 4-6 weeks of planting.

Return of the Real Estate Boom Profile

Over the past 10 years, St. Johns County has experienced one of the highest percentages of growth in the country. Finding your place in the new market presents both prosperity and challenge for residents of the First Coast.

L

ocal news sources have dubbed it the “St. Johns Surge.” Not only is St. Johns County one of the fastest growing areas in the state of Florida, it ranks in the top counties in the country. To give you a little perspective (and who doesn’t love statistics?), the average Florida county grew 4.6% between 2010 and 2015. St. Johns County grew 19%. That’s a little staggering. But for those who already live here, it shouldn’t really be a surprise. Afterall, St. Johns County is home to a little slice of paradise – beautiful beaches, historical landmarks, and a plethora of creative businesses and restaurants. Tourists have flocked here for decades to participate in the amusement and over the past 10 years, they’ve suddenly realized this is a charming place to call home. County schools are some of the highest ranked in the state, tax rates are low, and the area is rife with excellent employment opportunities. In short, St. Johns County is a great place to live.

buyers and growth continues to increase. Such exponential growth inevitably leads to challenges for local government in paying for infrastructure and keeping up with the new needs of the area. In addition, some current residents have concerns that this means the surrounding “small town feel” that they’ve so cherished will soon be a thing of the past. The leaders in government are aware of the anxieties of locals and are doing their best to ensure that while maintaining the rights of private property owners, development happens where and when is best for the county as a whole. We all want to maintain the individuality and uniqueness that the First Coast has to offer. Regardless of the obstacles and questions that arise with this kind of expansion, residents have to stay informed to keep up and wade into the surge. Educate yourself and know the value of the homes around you, which neighborhoods are upand-coming, how to get your home ready for the market, and what to look for when you’re buying will place you firmly ahead of the game and allow you to take advantage of such a prosperous time for the area.

THE AVERAGE FLORIDA COUNTY GREW 4.6% BETWEEN 2010 AND 2015. ST. JOHNS COUNTY GREW 19%.

Experts have said that this kind of local growth isn’t going to slow down anytime soon. And it isn’t just housing developments that are booming; schools and businesses are increasing right alongside. The county is rebuilding multiple high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools to accommodate the influx of new students; businesses owners are opening multiple locations or trying their hand at a new enterprise. So as schools improve and expand and new businesses pop up, the county only becomes more attractive to prospective

So whether you’re considering selling your home, buying a home in the area, or are just interested in the status of your home county, local real estate agents, the St. Johns County Board of Realtors and the Northeast Florida Association of Realtors have come together to give us the statistics and offer advice as we all find our place in the St. Johns County surge.

On Planning for Growth...... Planning to ensure proper infrastructure begins at the staff level. The county also assesses infrastructure capacity as part of our review of proposed development, and maintain a concurrency program for transportation and school infrastructure that requires new development to contribute their proportionate fair share toward those facilities.... Developers and community groups often play a role in the planning and completion of those projects and funding is always a factor as the County evolves and strives to meet the demand created by new growth. The County budget is limited in revenue options to construct new infrastructure, and available funding is continually being balanced with demand for services and community need. Michael Ryan, Director of Communications for St. Johns County Commission

BUILDING GREEN Florida native and architect Rory Reynolds has us inspired with his eco-friendly green home, the Live Oak House. Located just steps away from the St. Augustine Lighthouse, this little cottage is 2017’s greenest home in Northeast Florida. It’s time to see how building choices like Rory’s can benefit your home. All the appliances, fans, and lighting are EnergyStar and the plumbing is WaterSense. That means that everything is low-flow and overall uses 35% less water than a typical home. The roof, crawl space, and garage walls are all insulated and the windows all dualpaneled. Utility bills are already plummeting. Though the Live Oak House was designed and built around being green, investing in certain areas (like appliances or plumbing) will cut down on the monthly cost of running your home and save dollars in the long run. Not to mention, Mother Earth will thank you.

On choosing a realtor... It is a sad fact that most people will spend more time researching and reading reviews before purchasing a $20 toaster on Amazon, but when it comes to making a $300,000 or more sale or purchase, they just blindly go with the first realtor they run into or use "that realtor down the street" or their "best friend's aunt who does real estate part time" without truly researching them. - Sharon Stevens, For Buyers Only Realty

CHOOSING THE RIGHT REALTOR

uying a home is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make in your life. It is a huge investment of money, a choice to tie yourself to a particular community for a lengthy period of time, a commitment to a future for your family. But even though most prospective buyers know all these things already, their choice in a professional to guide them on the journey is hardly a passing thought. They’ll choose their parents’ neighbor, the closest realtor’s office to work, the billboard they saw on their way to dinner. The realtor you decide on, however, is foundational to the home-buying process. The first step, according to realtor K. Jennifer Cook of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Florida Network Realty, is “to work with a professional that has industry expertise and local market knowledge. The intricacies of real estate law have serious implications for the parties involved, so it is important to work with an agent that is trustworthy, keeping customers wellinformed and prepared for each step of the sales www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

process.” As in any relationship, communication is key. Find a realtor who is willing to answer questions and available to you as a client. “Choose someone,” says realtor Lindsey Maguire of Ancient City Real Estate, “who is selling homes full time and can always be reached either by the owner, buyers, and other realtors who want to schedule an appointment to view the home!” Finally, use technology to your advantage. “Check the agent's online reviews and testimonials!” says agent Brooke Bohall of Bohall of RE/MAX Coast2Coast, “A review is the best way to gauge if they will be the agent for you.” Serious and trustworthy referrals from former clients are one of the quickest ways to know how a realtor works in their field. Do your research and spend the necessary time to choose your realtor wisely. Utilize the resources available to you. You certainly won’t regret it in the long run.

REMODEL OR RELOCATE? Staying where you are and improving versus packing up and moving can be an overwhelming choice. Local professionals weigh in to make the decision a little easier.

S

o here’s the situation: your home just isn’t working for you anymore. Maybe your family has grown and there isn’t quite the room you had before. Maybe it’s feeling a little outdated. Whatever your reason, you’re sitting there on your shag carpet, with kids and stuff piled to the wood paneling, feeling that something has to be done. So it’s time for a decision. Do you remodel your existing home to better fit your current needs? Or do you pack up your things and find a new home? That’s a pretty big decision to which no universal answer can be given. But we can still help. First, you have to evaluate what improvements your home would need to fit your lifestyle again. The value and cost of those improvements is paramount in your decisionmaking. Peggy Gachet of Watson Realty Corp encourages going to the professionals, “A realtor can help with the evaluation of improvements and pricing. Should improvements made exceed value it may be advantageous to move on.” Nearly every realtor asks warns not to over improve for the neighborhood that you’re in.

your attachment to the house. If you’re in love with the home, the area, the neighbors, then the cost of renovations or remodeling may very well be worth it. “If you have a house on a piece of land that has room to add on and you have equity in the house and absolutely love where you live,” says Paul Wilson of RE/MAX Unlimited, “then perhaps it’s best to renovate to accommodate your new needs.” But if your list of needed improvements are really big, really expensive, or nearly impossible, relocating might be the better option. If you need an extra bedroom and your land doesn’t offer space for expansion, if you don’t like the area that your house is in, if your projected renovations wouldn’t be permitted by the city, then it may be time to pack up. “A homeowner should relocate,” says Brooke Bohall of RE/MAX Coast2Coast, “if they don't like their home's location, size, or other things not changeable or easily changed.” It’s always advisable when facing such a large fork in the road to consult the professionals that can give timely and relevant advice. But ultimately, the decision is based on you – your love of your current home, your developing needs, and your desire for the future.

OUTSIDE THE LIMITS On the outskirts of the cities and on the edge of the county sit some of the areas of highest growth. A few realtors have weighed in on the newly-emerged exterior communities. By Meeka Anne

T

hirty years ago the trip from St. Augustine to Jacksonville was an isolated drive through an uninhabited dense forested area. Today, the northwest sector of St. Johns County is in the midst of explosive growth. A report conducted a year ago ranked St. Johns County 15 on the list of fastest growing counties in the country. Much of this growth is centered around masterplanned communities like Shearwater, Nocatee, Rivertown, and Bannon Lakes. The permit

www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

numbers are staggering for these communities ranging from 850 homes for Bannon Lakes and extending to 12,000 for Nocatee. These new super neighborhoods have become the poster child for today’s modern families that insist on amenities, good schools, outdoor recreation, and an interactive experience with their neighbors. Expect to find high-end fitness centers with cutting edge equipment, kayak clubs, bicycle paths, and tennis courts. Of course the most elaborate features are pools, lagoons, and slides that often rival water-themed parks. Some families may find the immensity of some of these neighborhoods overwhelming. Realtor K. Jennifer Cook said, “There is a lot of buzz about Markland recently due to the quality of construction and aesthetics of the community. It is a much smaller community than Nocatee and Palencia, which appeals to homebuyers looking for high-end amenities in a more intimate setting.” Another builder, AV Homes, has Stone Creek, a 44-home neighborhood for those not interested in

New Neighborhoods BANNON LAKES Just northwest of the city and only a half mile from I-95 is a new development, surrounded by 20,000 acres of preserve land. It features a clubhouse, fitness center, a pool, and playing fields. International Golf Parkway RIVERTOWN Home to running and cycling events as well as a community clubhouse with a pool and waterslide, Rivertown is located directly on the St. Johns River. Kendall Crossing, St. Johns MARKLAND With a desire to keep the community intimate, Markland builders have planned for only 345 lots in the area. It boasts a fire pit for neighborhood conversation, a fitness center, pool, and clubhouse. International Golf Parkway NOCATEE Now the third best selling community in the nation, Nocatee is actually home to many different planned neighborhoods. With multiple parks, a farmer's market, monthly events, and outdoor recreation, it's not hard to see why it's so popular. Nocatee Parkway

HOA fees, yet looking for elegant wooded estate lot homes. There is no shortage of big name builders jumping on the growth train in the county. Mattamy Homes has several projects in the works, which include Segovia Townhomes (220 units) and Reserve at Greenbriar (271 units) as well as the large 5000 home RiverTown. Some of the larger developments have a variety of builders to choose from. For example, Shearwater’s builders include Lennar, Drees, and David Weekly, all of which offer different plans and pricing. Other neighborhoods include luxury developers such as Dream Finders Homes and Landon Homes. The impetus for this remarkable growth surge stems from many factors. With the location of northwest St. Johns County right smack dab in the middle of Jacksonville and St. Augustine, it literally offers the best of both worlds. The growth of nearby Jacksonville offers an abundance of job opportunities while the charm of St. Augustine

offers history, natural beaches and authenticity. Realtor Peggy Gachet said, “The northeast and northwest parts of the county are growing at a faster pace than others. Quality schools, family activities and proximity to jobs in Jacksonville drive the decisions for many families.” Growth is exciting for communities for a plethora of reasons including business opportunities, entertainment choices, and the influx of unique grocers and retailers. On the flip side of that coin is loss of natural beauty, traffic concerns, and overcrowded schools. Attention to infrastructure is key when an area reaches this height of development. Communities in the works and on the horizon have already permitted tens of thousands of home sites. It certainly presents a challenge to local building and zoning boards to ensure the county keeps in touch with preserving the elements that are driving the influx of families choosing to relocate to beautiful St. Johns county. www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

On Keeping Up with the Growth...... Michael Ryan, the director of communications for the St. Johns County Commission provided some insight. In reference to building and zoning, Michael said, “We have an educated and experienced growth management department that includes planning, building inspections, zoning, and coder enforcement. All of those divisions work hand in hand to keep up with the demand, serve the community, and ensure the right type of growth occurs in the appropriate locations, and at the appropriate time as driven by the market. The board authorized additional staff to meet the demand.” Addressing positives and negatives, Michael added, “Growth in and of itself is not inherently a negative. Growing counties tend to have more vibrant economies and active communities. Rapid growth can put a strain on local governments and their ability to build infrastructure that meet community expectations for services and programming. Growing counties and cities are continually striving to balance limited budgets and revenue options with infrastructure and service demands, and St. Johns County is no different in 2017.”

Up The Curb Appeal

De-Clutter

"Clean, make sure lightbulbs are replaced and working. Make your home look as close as possible to a model home. Tasteful, fun decor. You want a buyer to walk in and think, "Wow, these owners really took care of this home. We could see ourselves living here!""

Don't believe everything that television tells you! Consult the professionals. "Absolutely have an agent come by to give some advice. From curb appeal, to staging and potential upgrades to get the most for your property."

Keep the personal items personal. "Remove some personal items such as the line of family photos along the wall. It sometimes becomes hard for a prospective buyer to see his or herself as an owner of the house if all that is in there is the current owners family photos."

First impressions are always the most important! "Spruce up curb appeal to create a positive first impression for buyers. Keep the lawn freshly cut, trim hedges and shrubs, plant flowers, pull weeds, consider a fresh coat of paint on the exterior or front door."

Prospective buyers shouldn't be distracted by all your things so now is the time to clean house, have a garage sale or rent a storage unit if you have to. "Closets should not looked crowded and clear counters as best you can."

On selling an outdated home... "The best thing a homeowner with an outdated house should do is to have an actual home inspection before listing the property for sale. This way, they can fix items that are deemed to be major repair items instead of spending many dollars on something they were told would add value only to lose this investment once the new buyer does their home inspection. One upgrade that isn't terribly expansive is to paint the house inside and out. There is a saying that a $20.00 can of paint is worth $1,000.00 on the wall." Paul Wilson, RE/MAX Unlimited

On the popularity of St. Johns County...

Gorgeous historic downtown, miles of beautiful beaches, A+schools and the still "small town feel". Despite the recent Hurricane Matthew we have bounced back and buyers are not weary. We have tremendous amount of new construction options in just about all price ranges. Also, in a growth period we see a good amount of horizontal moves. TOP SELLER OF 2016

s the St. Johns County market continues to rise, grander and more expensive homes are sold everyday. And though top dollar homes can be found all over the county, the top seller of 2016 according to the Northeast Florida Association of Realtors is located just north of the Ponte Vedra Club. With sweeping golf course views to the west and the sparkling ocean to the east, Jacksonville to the north and St. Augustine to the south, it’s no wonder this area is the one to take home the gold. “When it comes to investment,” says Susan Fort of Ponte Vedra Club Realty, who (along with her partner Tyler Ackland) was responsible for the year’s top home, “You just can’t go wrong with oceanfront. This location is amazing.” For a staggering $5.3 million, you might be expecting the Ponte Vedra Boulevard home to be something massive, intimidating, and decadent, but the house is surprisingly

Downtown Delight 248 Riberia Street

understated and quietly luxurious. Susan describes it as a “coastal cottage.” The 2800 square foot residence was built in 1964, but had been renovated from top to bottom only a few years ago. It stands out from other homes of the county not only for its location, but for its extremely high-end finishes, top quality craftsmanship, and volume ceilings. It doesn’t need to be over-the-top to take home top dollar. Even though it’s an incredible career milestone to not only sell 2016’s most expensive home, but sell it within 10 days of its being on the market, Susan says with a laugh that it’s not the most expensive home she’s dealt with. Since the beginning of 2017, she has sold more than one home with an even higher price tag (just further evidence of a rise that hasn’t slowed down!). Residents are eager to start building a life in the beautiful area and are ready to pay whatever it takes to get here.

We all own flip-flops and sunhats and keep an umbrella in various parts of our homes (because, let’s face it, the Sunshine State doesn’t guarantee sunshine). These slightly reclined, seriously relaxing pieces of furniture are not only aesthetically pleasing, but veritably scream First Coast. Picture this. That ever present sea breeze is cooling your sun-kissed skin while you sip on whatever afternoon cocktail it takes to relax you after work. For us, an Adirondack chair is the only missing ingredient. Even though they’re pretty much perfect for any season in our tropical climate, but there’s no better time for them than right now, during spring’s transition to summer. Whether on your front porch for that morning cup of coffee, or sinking in the sand on the beach, an Adirondack is the Floridian chair. Waterfront Splendor Home Style

A build worth waiting for. Community cohesion at its finest. A team of local builders and artisans came together to bring an eclectic masterpiece to life. By Christina Benjamin | Photography by Ed Taylor

F

loridians Brad and Robin Cooper recently opened their doors to give us an inside look at the extensive process and masterful taste that went into creating their Davis Shores home. The couple, who just celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary, describe the home as nothing short of a dream realized.

One such moment led to the gorgeous windows on the second story. Before the massive exterior wall was complete, Brad noticed how beautiful the natural light and scenery was through the exposed beams. He and Jason Forrest put their heads together to create small “picture frameesque” windows that offer changing views throughout the day.

The build took over five years, beginning with the initial design concept in 2011. Robin and Brad love sharing their home with their friends and wanted to focus on an open floor plan that was ideal for entertaining. With the help of builder Jason Forrest, they did just that.

Such artistic windows are well suited for the incredible collection of art the house displays. Upon entering the home, the first thing you'll notice – after the waterfront oasis of the St. Augustine Inlet – is this love for art. The couple's modern amenities are blended with just the right amount of eclectic flare. Not all couples enjoy working on a home build together but Brad credits their success to their “division of labor,” saying they shared the load equally but concentrated on their personal strong suits. Brad’s primary focus was the engineering elements while Robin headed up the aesthetic design.

Brad credits Jason and his team with the master craftsmanship of the house. “Working with Jason was a lot of fun. He was always open to my ideas and enjoyed the challenge. He’s a serious perfectionist so I knew I could trust him to run with an idea and it would turn out better than I’d envisioned.” Being on hand during the building process allowed the Coopers to have what Brad describes as “serendipitous moments.”

It is clear while gazing at the masterful art that adorns the walls of the Coopers' home that each piece holds special meaning. Art and music are a huge part of the Coopers'

Wide open spaces featuring eclectic art and furnishings is the theme that runs throughout the Cooper's entire home. From their foyer you can not only see clear across nearly their entire first floor, but also almost out the St. Augstine Inlet. lives and being able to “pay it forward” by decorating with pieces that support the local art community is beyond rewarding. They were even able to experience a tangible result of their patronage when the palm tree sculptures they commissioned for the home helped an artist they admire land a full-ride master’s scholarship to pursue her passion— further proof of art impacting lives. But beauty wasn’t their only focus while conceptualizing their plans. Making their home sustainable was also at the forefront of the design concept. Having lived through Florida's hurricanes before, the Coopers wanted to “overbuild,” choosing materials that could withstand sustained winds and adding generators that would maintain the master suite in the event of an emergency. Little did they know how quickly they would come to appreciate their precautions.

66

Eight months after the couple moved into their home, Hurricane Matthew shredded the eastern coast in October of 2016 and St. Augustine sustained some of the worst flooding and wind damage in centuries. There was nothing Brad and Robin could do but trust that their home would do what it was designed to do and hold strong. To their relief, it did. They had damage to the property, dock, and pool, but their home had fended off the storm. “We had a bit of survivor’s guilt,” Brad says. “So many of our neighbors didn’t fare as well, but we did what we could to help out.” Whether it was lending generators or inviting neighbors over for a meal to escape the stress of the storm, the Coopers were there for their community. St. Augustine shares an unparalleled sense of togetherness, and Davis Shores is no exception. According to the Coopers,“Hurricane Matthew brought

Their home style is a unique blend of modern architecture paired with colorful art collection. You'll never hear a single person proclaim "there's nothing to do" at the Cooper residence. The house is an adult's dream playground featuring pool room, arcade games, recording studio – not to mention the actual pool. And with a home gym that overlooks the boats coming in and out of the St. Augustine inlet, there's never an excuse to skip a work out.

our community together and strengthened bonds.” During the lengthy building process, Brad admitted he was apprehensive about how their home would be received since it wasn’t being built in the area’s typical Mediterranean-Spanish style. But to their relief, the Coopers say they felt accepted by the Davis Shores community. “Neighbors would routinely stop by to see what we were doing and were generally pleased.” And how could they not be? Brad and Robin kept the environment conscious in their decisions. They used pervious pavers that reduce runoff, allowing rainwater to recharge the ground and even installed an A/C system that recycles water. Even though the house already looks like a masterpiece, Brad still has a few finishing touches planned before he can say the

72

project is complete. But when he’s not coming up with new genius scenarios for his abode, you can find him jamming out in “the Bradlands,” his own home recording studio, or performing around town with his band mates, T. Martin and The Troublemakers. Robin enjoys spending her free time helping local charities, but she always keeps an eye open for inspiring art to add to the Coopers' ever growing collection. The Coopers are extremely pleased with how their home turned out. Working with some of the best in the biz made their home build dreams a reality. A home like the Coopers' is more than just the beautiful lines, sleek finishes, and art that adorns its walls. It is an investment in the local builders, contractors, professionals, and artists that helped the masterpiece come to life.

JEANETTE JONES A need for change put her on this path, but passion keeps her there. Family treasures find renewed life at the hands of Jeanette Jones, a local upholsterer. By Meeka Anne | Photography by Brian Miller When Jeanette was 20-years-old, she took a class to learn how to reupholster an old chair she loved, but discovered her project was a bit ambitious. This led to the instructor offering to help her finish the chair in exchange for some tasks. At the time, she wasn’t thrilled about stripping down furniture and pulling tacks, but in retrospect she realized he was teaching her the real grit of the trade. This new-found skill led to more projects for friends and family members. However, after her daughter came along, she decided to follow a more lucrative path into the real estate business. Then along came the housing crisis and a new path had to be forged. She said, “I had to make a change, so I made of list of my skills. I realized I knew how to sew and how to upholster.” This led to a shared space with a friend in Jacksonville, then a small shop inside a retail store and finally her current space in a warehouse. Jeanette said, “I love taking something old and tired and making it beautiful again. One of my favorite pieces was a chair I did for a woman to give to her great-granddaughter. It had a heart shaped back and just made me think of the love for the chair that would pass down to a fourth generation.” 205 West Davis Industrial Drive (904) 440-3443

AUSTIN REED St. Augustine High School Varsity Football player Austin Reed is working hard to be the best quarterback he can be. By Meaghan Alvarado | Photography by Brian Miller

A

fter spending a little time convincing his mother, Austin Reed started playing tackle football nine years ago for the St. Augustine Saints, a local Pop Warner team. Cut to 2017 and Austin's junior year of high school and you'll find him serving as St. Augustine High School Varsity Quarterback. He’s played both offensive and defensive positions but says, “I love to throw, so when I was asked to play quarterback I realized that I really like the position and I’m good at it.” And his skill should be no surprise; Austin spends two to three hours practicing or playing football games after school each day. Each of Austin’s weekdays begins with dual-enrollment classes at St. Johns River State College. After leaving the college, he heads to St. Augustine High School for more classes, followed by football practice or a game in the afternoon. In the evenings, Austin makes time for family, studying, and maybe a few video games on his PS4 if he

76

has time. In addition to playing football Austin also plays Long Stick Midfielder on the Yellow Jacket’s Varsity Lacrosse team in the winter.

When Austin is not practicing or studying to keep his 4.3 GPA and honors status, he volunteers as a coach with the Police Athletic League (PAL). Last summer he guided his team of seventh and eighth graders for a win in the week-long flag football tournament. More than just winning games, Austin’s motivation for practicing is to be the best that he can be. “If you sit around, then nothing is going to happen, and you’re going to fail.” There are a lot of talented football players, so natural skill isn't always enough. Hard work is necessary to compete and be successful. Austin’s advice to other aspiring young athletes is to work hard in both the weight room and the classroom. Good grades are critical if you want to play in college. Russel Wilson, the Seattle Seahawks quarterback, is a source of inspiration for Austin. Wilson’s coach at North Carolina State told him he would never play in the www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

National Football League due to his size, but then he went on to become a Super Bowl champion. He's proof for Austin that hard work can pay off, “If you’re ever given a chance to put in work on an off-day, then do it!” Over his summer vacations, Austin typically attends regional and college football camps. Last summer he attended several camps around the Southeast at schools such as the University of Central Florida, Mercer University, and Samford University. This past February, he attended Nike Football: The Opening Regional Camp, a highly-coveted workshop for the elite of high school football players. This summer Austin plans to go to several college camps in preparation for the college career he'll be starting soon. Austin is interested in attending a school where first and foremost he can get a scholarship and receive a good education. He’s talked about majoring in Veterinary Medicine. This past fall he made time to shadow with St. Augustine Veterinarian, Dr. Jacob Vencil, the owner of Palencia Pet Clinic. Austin is looking forward to the Jackets' next season. His strong efforts both on and off the field are leading him in the direction of his dreams to play football in college.

ST. FRANCIS HOUSE St. Augustine is in crisis. Judith Dembowski and the St. Francis House are providing real solutions to fix it, but they can't do it alone. By Shannon O'Neil | Photography by Brian Miller

S

t. Augustine is paradise. From serene beaches to historic culture, it’s easy to see why moving vans fly across the St. Johns County line every day. But for thousands of locals, living in paradise has a high price. Following the 2008 economic collapse and last year’s devastating hurricane, St. Augustine’s struggle with homelessness has become a full-blown affordable housing crisis. No one is more familiar with the situation than Judith Dembowski, Executive Director of the St. Francis House. Since 1984, the nonprofit St. Francis House has provided emergency shelter, hot meals, and critical services for the local homeless population. “Our goal is to get our homeless population to functional zero,” says Judith. “That means anyone who becomes homeless can get back into housing in thirty days or less.” In 2016, through the soup kitchen, advocacy programs, job training, and other assistance programs, the organization provided

78

19,401 points of service to 3,134 people in the community. "What our community really needs," says Judith, "Are long term solutions.” Under Judith's direction, the St. Francis House will soon extend its services. Hurricane Matthew devastated their primary facility in Lincolnville, but once repairs are completed, St. Francis House will double its space for women and families. A new location specifically for youth services is also in the works. Judith began her career assisting homeless youth in her native Maine. She was a college student balancing the demands of classes and her two young children when she saw a former classmate on TV who was running a homeless youth shelter. “Growing up I knew kids who were without a home, but to think about that as an adult with children of my own, the weight of the situation really hit me,” says Judith. “I called right away and asked how I could help.” Following two decades of work in Maine, Judith moved to St. Augustine in 2014 and took a case management position with St. Francis House. Four months later she was named interim director, a position later made permanent by the St. Francis House Board of Directors. Since then, Judith has www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

led the organization in helping thousands of St. Johns County residents. “There are a lot of misconceptions about our homeless population,” says Judith. “A lot of our clients have jobs, but maybe lost a roommate or broke up with their significant other, and they can’t afford to live on their own.” St. Johns County has the highest median household income in the state, but some of the lowest wages for blue collar workers. Coupled with high rental rates, this leaves many individuals and families just one car breakdown, prolonged illness, or hurricane away from homelessness. “Our clients just want to be self-sufficient," said Judith. “They want to feel good and feel productive. They want to be part of our community. They just have nowhere to live affordably.” Judith spends every day advocating for her clients and asks the community to support the cause. Donations, volunteers, and advocates are always welcome at St. Francis House. “It’s never felt like a job or a duty to me,” said Judith. “This is just what I do. Some people shop, some people play tennis, I work with kids and families.” 70 Washington Street www.stfrancisshelter.org

As a full day of beach-going, food truck-dining, and museum-hopping is coming to a close, the family of four can be found with a board game spread out on their dining room table or with a basketball in hand in their driveway. Don't expect these games to stay friendly, though – the competitive Hudsons are always keeping score! But life isn't always about the The Hudson Family competition. Sunday evenings are pictured from left: Jacob 8, for family dinners, unwinding, and Tyler (Dad) 31, Stephanie refreshing for a new week; summer (Mom) 29, Skylar 10 afternoons and quiet weekends are for lazy fishing days. TODD WHITTEN & ROMEY MALOY Straight from the Pacific Rim and into the homes of St. Augustine, these business partners travel far and wide to find unique furniture and home accessories that you won’t see in other stores. By Amanda LaConte | Photography by Brian Miller

T

reasure hunting in Thailand, deal brokering in Indonesia and antiquing in China – just another day at the office for Todd Whitten, owner of T. Gregory Imports! But as Todd and his partner, Romey Maloy, will tell you, the glamour and adventure do not come without a healthy dose of hard work. A step inside T. Gregory Imports offers visual proof of their tireless efforts and pride in their work. The store is bursting at the seams with beautiful handcrafted furniture and home accessories that carry out the mission of the store – to “add some wow factor to any room in your house.” Todd’s retail roots run deep, all the way back the small town in Louisiana where he grew up. Raised in a family that owned clothing and convenience stores, Todd was immersed in the inner workings of retail from a young age. After going to jeweler school, he opened his own jewelry and fine clothing store. His store was successful in his small town for many years, but he suddenly found himself jobless when the store burned down in a fire. So he began traveling on the road, wholesaling clothing and jewelry, and eventually accepted a position with a wholesale sterling silver jewelry company, a position which relocated him to Arkansas. That company was bought by another headquartered in Jacksonville, resulting in Todd’s relocation to the First Coast. Todd

the three countries, Todd finds his time in Thailand the most enjoyable. The country is clean, easy to traverse, and beautiful to see. The Thai people are known for their friendliness, and Todd loves to observe how they can take raw materials and make beautiful things with them.

Talk to Todd Whitten about his business and he’s sure to tell you what he loves best is the hunt. His treasure hunting takes him primarily to Thailand, China, and Indonesia. Generally speaking, he goes to Thailand for home accessories, China for antique and reclaimed wood pieces, and Indonesia for the larger furniture pieces. Not one item sold in the store is mass produced – everything is unique and hand-selected by Todd himself from “mom and pop” shops. You won’t find these pieces in any other stores.

Todd and Romey take pride in the fact that their store carries pieces you will not find anywhere else. Todd is always traveling and the inventory is always changing. In addition to unique furniture, antiques, and home accessories, you can also find an extensive offering of art. Some of the art is imported (namely large abstract pieces hand selected from China), but the store showcases the work of Kathy Frozio, a local artist based in Jacksonville Beach. Kathy keeps the walls of T. Gregory looking vibrant with her coastal “beachy” impressionism paintings.

Todd embarks on his treasure hunting trips three or four times per year, for two to three weeks at a time, depending on the need. Of www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

Three Dog Night, The Monkees, Cinderella, and John Cougar Mellencamp. A pretty impressive resume. Walt’s two great passions are music and cars and, as much as he has become a musical staple in the Ancient City, it was the car business which first brought him to Florida in 1989. Walt says, “I didn’t tell anyone I was a musician but word just kind of got out.” Walt remembers playing at The Crab Pot in Jacksonville Beach where, within six months of arriving on the First Coast, he would be jamming with Southern rock heavyweights like Artimus Pyle and Allen Collins of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Banner Thomas of Molly Hatchet, and Barry Dunaway of .38 Special. “You play Southern rock way too good to be a yankee” was the comment he most often heard. In the summer of 1992, along with longtime musical partner Chris McVey, Walt started the group with which he is now most commonly identified – Those Guys. Originally a duo, the resulting band has seen a number of personnel changes over the years, including Artimus Pyle on drums for a time. Their current line-up, though (which includes drummer Oleg Shkolyar and bassist Banner Thomas), is the group which now keeps St. Augustine audiences entertained with a song list that stretches from Steely Dan to The Beatles to Neil Young.

WALT KULWICKI

Few musicians enjoy the musical pedigree that Walt Kulwicki does, and it's a pedigree he's willing to share all along the First Coast. Written and Photographed by Steve Parr

W

alt Kulwicki was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Because his father worked in the paper box industry, however, the family was slightly nomadic. He’s called Massachusetts, New York City, New Jersey (twice), and Illinois home. Walt took his first guitar lesson when he was eight years old and he’s had a guitar in his hands ever since. In the late 1960s, while living in New Jersey, he jammed with a band that played in the house across the street

from his. “I would go over and play along with ‘Gloria,’" says Walt, "That was the only song I could play with them.” Shortly thereafter his family moved to the Quad Cities in Illinois. “It didn’t take me long to meet up with a drummer to just kind of jam," he says, "Nothing real serious.” But four years later, Walt found himself in New Jersey again and it was during this time in New Jersey that his musical prowess began to take center stage in his life. He had the pleasure of opening for acts such as Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

Along with performing with the band Those Guys, he also performs with Chris McVey as a duo called The Original Those Guys and even has time to hold down some solo gigs. That would likely be enough for most musicians, but not Walt Kulwicki. He’s also on the staff of Eclipse Studio in St. Augustine, where he’s a session guitarist. He estimates he’s performed on some 60 albums to date. Clearly, Walt plays all over and is an easy act to find. As a solo act, with the duo or with the band, he performs at Shaughnessy's, Tradewinds, Golden Lion Cafe in Flagler Beach, Hurricane Pattie's, Ann O'Malley's, and JT's Seafood Shack in Palm Coast. When asked for some little known fact about him, Walt says he was once offered a spot to play John "Bowzer" Bauman's little brother on the variety show Sha Na Na. He doesn’t know where he’d be had he taken that gig, of course, but he seems pretty content with how his life and career has progressed without ever finding that out. The grass he's standing on is plenty green. You can find out everything you'd ever want to know about Walt Kulwicki at www.thoseguys.com.

Both men began their journey toward becoming craftsmen as young boys idolizing and carefully watching their talented fathers.

as well. “Growing up, my dad was always a do-it-yourself kind of guy,” Jesse insists, “He built a log cabin that we lived in for years. It was awesome! Learning from him that whole idea of doing things yourself taught me to work with my hands.” Many years after learning those childhood lessons from their fathers, Jesse and David’s talents came together. “I’ve been making furniture for about fifteen years now,” David shares, “I was just tinkering with it through the years. I met Jesse about four years ago through a friend. He was interested in metalwork and making furniture, so we decided to collaborate on some things and start a business. I was doing wood and he was doing metal and it just fit.” Jesse and David started their brand with artistry of mind and labor of skillful hands. Their combined creative genius – as evidenced by every piece created at their workshop– separates them from many large chain stores. Focusing their attention on one project at a time, David and Jesse are able to fuse creative vision with quality workmanship to craft masterpieces. and beauty. The world around them is a constant source of inspiration for David and Jesse to make even the most ordinary piece of furniture become a beautiful, interesting conversation starter. When asked about carpentry and the things that inspire his work, David said, “I just really enjoy doing it. I get inspired by a lot of things. Inspiration is everywhere. Whether it be other people’s work or something I see on a trip, inspiration is just all around. But I really like a lot of modern styles and Art Deco.” Their dedication to their clients and to their craft helps Jesse and David create some truly uncommon pieces. Their attention to detail and respect for the natural and rustic look of wood and steel is on full display in their work. Some types of wood, such as cypress, walnut, and cherry, reveal their rich colors and marbling in the form of conference tables, benches, and cutting boards while the dexterity of polished steel adds both form and function to outdoor kitchens, cabinets, and bar stools. David and Jesse’s ability to coalesce their individual talents to produce such practical and eye-pleasing work has given them opportunities to provide their goods for many local homes and businesses. The owners of Moonshine Wood and Steel were asked to build a thirty-five foot long counter,

With its vintage inlays and polished hues and lines of the married woods, the Nettles counter is stunning. Another example of Jesse’s and David’s fine work is not at a public location but rather in the private confines of a client’s home. The two artisans made custom sliding barn doors accented and secured with rustic steel hardware. The sliding doors function both aesthetically and practically as an impressive divider separating a kitchen and a family room. It’s all taken very humbly and with much appreciation from David and Jesse as they continue making customers happy with their crafts. Maintaining good relationships with both new and repeat customers is something that they desire for the lifetime of their joint venture. With a mind for business and tremendous talent, the pair is moving forward. When asked what would be the key for the continued success of Moonshine Wood and Steel, Jesse answered, “Stay small and focus on meaningful good work.” 134 Riberia Street www.moonshinewoodandsteel.com

SUGARCANE-SKEWERED SEA SCALLOPS Photography by Brian Miller The art that graces the walls of Blackfly the Restaurant is vibrant, colorful, and perfect for its nautical atmosphere. It’s hard to believe that something could distract attention from the artwork, but the menu gives Vaughn Cochran’s paintings a run for their money. Chef Matt Brown’s culinary mind is clearly artistically inclined. Choosing a standout dish on the mostly Bahamian-inclined menu is no easy task, but as far as originality and flavor goes, the Sugarcane-Skewered Sea Scallops are hard to beat. As the name suggests, before the Diver Caught scallops are pan-seared, they are skewered with a length of Florida Sugarcane that infuses a sweetness into the dish that you might not expect from seafood. The scallops are served over a cauliflower puree with a corn, bacon, almonds, and shishito pepper succotash that undercuts the sugar with a little bit of heat. If all this flavor wasn’t enough, the dish is then garnished with lemongrassscallion oil for a delicate, but distinctly tangy essence.

wned by Flagler College alumnus, Ted McLemore, South Beach Grill is known around St. Augustine for their variety of fresh, local seafood and unbeatable oceanfront view. But seafood isn't their only specialty. Yup, if it’s veggies you’re looking for South Beach Grill has plenty to offer – everything from a few salads to three vegetarian bowls, and some vegetarian-friendly appetizers. At the top, though, sits their Crescent Beach Vegetable Bowl – your fill of fresh veggies smothered in a sweet red coconut curry sauce. Don’t let the curry scare you off if you have a sensitive palette, though. It’s a very pleasant, mild sauce. If you’re a fan of Indian spices and a little heat, ask them to bump up the curry flavor when you order. Be sure to squeeze on the lime wedge for a burst of citrus too; it really brings out the coconut flavor. The menu lists broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, bell pepper, and onion as the vegetables in the Crescent Beach Vegetable Bowl, but every time I’ve ordered it, I’ve had other welcome surprises like mushrooms and kale. Served in a large bowl

on top of yellow rice, you’ll likely be leaving with half of your order in a box. Their bowls are quite a substantial portion (as are many of their other entrees). Adding chicken, fish, or shrimp to this bowl for a few extra bucks is an option for the meat-eaters looking to find a little more protein. The red coconut curry sauce makes a nice compliment to seafood. Even if you're a devoted carnivore, it’s a good idea to check the vegetarian options for something a little different. Oftentimes vegetarian menus are more outside the box than standard menu items. If you’re a fan of chocolate and peanut butter, take half the bowl home and leave room for dessert. South Beach Grill’s Peanut Butter Tower is a stack of sweet delight. The bottom is graham cracker crumbs, topped high with peanut butter mousse and chocolate ganache. South Beach Grill is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Breakfast is served on Saturday and Sunday. 45 Cubbedge Road www.southbeachgrill.net www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

Classic Okay, let's start with nothing less than just classic bacon. There are a lot of places that will serve the delicacy day or night, but for thick cut, crispy, old fashioned bacon, you can't get better than Jaybird's Restaurant. Get bacon as a side for any delicious homestyle breakfast or, frankly, get some all by itself. 2600 North Ponce de Leon Boulevard

Appetizer The classic breakfast item isn't just for mornings anymore! Prohibition Kitchen offers it as an appetizer, day or night. Their Candied Bacon appetizer is piled high and served crispy with a brown sugar candy glaze. Satisfy your sweet tooth and your bacon cravings all in one fell swoop. Drink That's right, you read that right. Bacon has made its way boldly into the beverage world without a moment of hestitation. Bull and Crown Publick House serves up a Bacon Bloody Mary. Bacon vodka, Absolut Peppar, and a house Bloody Mary mix are garnished with bacon (naturally), okra, celery, and olives. Spicy, savory, and utterly thirst-quenching. 53 St. George Street

TAKE ON TUNA Tuna is something this town does right. Casual or gourmet, this seafood staple is a St. Augustine must-eat. Photography by Brian Miller

Seared Tuna Melt Aviles Ahi Tuna

THE FLORIDIAN If you’re looking for a good dose of tuna on your lunch break or for a lazy Sunday afternoon, this is the spot to check out. A combination of fresh seafood and locally sourced ingredients will make your palette and your heart happy. For this delicious melt, a hearty portion of Atlantic tuna is seared and placed on artisan ciabatta bread from Jacksonville’s Boutique du Pain Bakery. The sandwich is then broiled with Sweet Grass Dairy’s Tomme and Lil Moo cheeses and finished with a lemon aioli and a rainbow carrot and beet slaw – veggies grown in Hastings by Ben Wells Produce.

CELLAR 6 Craving tuna around dinner time will inevitably lead you to the Asianinspired and stunningly elaborate Aviles Ahi Tuna. The Yellowfin is crusted in tuxedo sesame seeds and seared to a beautiful rare that highlights the bright color of the fish. The tuna is then sliced and served with a zesty Asian calamari and seaweed salad before being finished with traditional soy sauce and wasabi for some heat. It’s a dish that starts out so pretty, you’ll be hesitant to eat it. But try to move past that aesthetic appreciation because the flavor and freshness will not disappoint.

The rich, full-bodied flavor of the melted cheeses is a perfect match for the refreshing, smooth flavor of the tuna. An amazing combination of all the area has to offer.

It’s a dish that offers a little bite, but never distracts from the flavor of each individual ingredient. The tuna is on the menu as a starter, but once it reaches the table, you probably won’t feel like sharing.

RENEE SPADARO With Crave Food Truck, Renee Spadaro spreads positive vibes, a passion for healthy living, and, often, homemade hummus on each wrap. By Matthew Shaw | Photography by Rob Futrell

O

n a typical humid, Florida morning in front of Rembrandtz Art Gallery on King Street in downtown St. Augustine, as Andrés Guardiola slid open the window from inside the Crave Food Truck and waited (smiling patiently as he’s known to do) for customers to arrive, Renee Spadaro was frantically chopping fresh veggies like spinach, cabbage, and red peppers for the various wraps on offer, mixing up hummus and healthy dressings for salads, and racing to finish the prep work for the day’s menu. It was Crave’s first day in operation and the energy was positive (as always) but anxious. “It was really nerve wracking,” Renee remembers. “We were freaking out just a little bit.” If the anxiety of seeing if years of

96

hard work and an investment of virtually all of her and Andrés' savings would pay off weren’t enough, minutes before Crave was set to open for business, their power supply failed. Renee and Andrés remained calm and, luckily, an electrician had them juiced up in less than twenty minutes. According to Renee, the rest of the day went by like a blur. “We were flooded with friends and family who came to see us on our first day,” she says. “I just remember being nervous, then working really hard, and then all the sudden the day was over.” Nearly four years later, as much as things have changed for Crave and its proprietors –Renee and Andrés since established two permanent locations and the couple www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

was married in March – they’ve stayed the same. Andrés still mans the window, greeting the food truck’s loyal customers with the same positive, chatty demeanor, while Renee handles the menu and the bulwark of prep. While Crave is praised by locals for its healthy, delicious offerings, a quick appraisal of the food truck’s Yelp reviews reveals that the business is nearly as well known for the cheerful air with which its owners carry themselves. “It’s really just the way we are,” Renee says. “We are just appreciative when people come to our place to eat. We love that they enjoy the food.” Renee is the mastermind behind Crave’s eclectic, salubrious menu. Although she

Crave’s is an entrepreneurial success story in its purest form: two dreamers with relatively humble ambitions turn an idea into an Ancient City stalwart. “We honestly did not think we would ever get to this point,” Renee says, reflecting on Crave’s success. “We thought we could only hope to be this little food truck. But here we are, growing still. We are so happy we decided to do this.”

has no formal culinary training, Renee spent years perfecting the recipes and techniques that would eventually make Crave so popular. Growing up in New York, Renee learned a lot about cooking from her Italian grandmother. The two spent most Sundays preparing sumptuous family meals and Renee carried that love of cooking with her as she moved from New York to Atlanta and then to St. Augustine. But as she saw her grandmother struggle with diabetes and other family members develop health issues, Renee started researching and experimenting with healthier recipes. “I fell in love with the healthy lifestyle," she says, "I loved how food could make you feel really good and change your whole mindset.” It was about this time that Renee met Andrés. The two were working together at the Casa Monica Hotel “doing banquets and wedding stuff,” Renee says. Andrés, who holds a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and has worked as a personal fitness trainer,

shared Renee's passion for healthy living. Renee, all the while, was fine-tuning her cooking techniques, challenging herself to rethink traditional recipes in favor of more healthful ones. It was unclear at this point, however, if Renee would be able to more fully combine her passion for healthy lifestyle choices and her actual lifestyle. “I was eating at the Present Moment Café and I was telling my friend about all the recipes I’d come up with,” Renee says. “She suggested I open a food truck. I came home and told Andrés about it. We just got really excited. We felt like we had a good idea and we were kind of over working for other people. We were ready to do our own thing.”

“We really wanted to make a place where the average person could go, have an introduction to healthy food, but not feel overwhelmed,” Renee says. “One of our main goals is to show that you can eat healthy and it’s still going to taste good.”

The couple poured their savings into the project. They purchased a truck from Georgia and equipped it with a full kitchen themselves. When they finally opened the doors, so to speak, at their temporary location on King Street, it was immediately clear that Renee and Andrés were fulfilling a need in the community.

“We try to only be positive and treat people well,” Renee says. “We are so thankful that people have been supportive of us. When you walk up to Crave, I think you can feel that. Everybody is happy to be there.”

www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

Crave was soon offered a permanent location in the Marina on Riberia Street. Since then Crave has expanded, while continuing to build relationships in the community by using products from local farmers, supporting other local entrepreneurs, and consistently treating its customer base with the gratitude and kindness they were shown on day one.

Behind the Bar

BRIAN BATEMAN Mellow Mushroom bar manager Brian Bateman brings experience, beerknowledge, and an unflappable demeanor to the popular pizzeria’s Anastasia Island location. By Matthew Shaw | Photography by Brian Miller

T

hough it’s a nearly 50-yearold franchise with something like 140 locations across the U.S., people like bartender Brian Bateman allow each Mellow Mushroom to maintain a funky, community-specific flavor (no pun intended). The 46-year old Ocean City, Maryland transplant’s been a smiling face behind the Mellow bar since the Anastasia Island location’s grand opening nearly four years ago, slinging cocktails and pulling tasty pints from the pizzeria’s vast and locallyfocused selection of taps. Brian landed his first bartending job nearly two decades ago when he was a member of the University of Virginia Wesleyan's golf team. Needing a summer job to maintain his residence in the coastal vacation community of Virginia Beach, Brian's bar backing gig at a night clubstyle joint turned into a steady bartending job. Since then he’s been behind the bar off and on from Pittsburgh to Virginia until his arrival in St. Augustine 15 years ago. The experience at a high-volume establishments primed Brian for the large and eclectic crowds of revelers and diners that Mellow tends to pull in on the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights he tends bar. “My strength has always been volume,” Brian says. “I’m able to handle a really crowded bar, efficiently and accurately.”

“I’m kind of a ‘hop-head’ so I like to keep a lot of IPAs on tap,” Bateman explains. “Our menu can be overwhelming, but I’m really good at pointing people toward something new that fits their tastes or expands their understanding of beer. We have goses, sours, stouts, reds, porters, you name it,” he continues. “We also get a lot of rare and special beers from breweries like Funky Buddha and Cigar City.”

THE PRESS Kevin and Simone Boose's recipe for success must have found the secret ingredient because fresh bread, house-made desserts, and an imaginative menu keep the crowds coming back. By Molly Wilson | Photography by Rob Futrell

N

early a year and a half ago, Kevin and Simone Boose decided to abandon corporate America and return to their culinary roots. Kevin had managed restaurants and worked as a chef for most of his life, so the departure wasn’t entirely out of the blue. He had always been intrigued by the food world and after high school had even applied to the Culinary Institute of America. Opening his own restaurant was a natural next step.

table is already full and it stays that way. Professionals hurry in for a quick lunch, groups of friends linger over their appetizers, couples on vacation sit at the bar and chat.

Pinning down The Press as far as food inspiration is no mean feat. The couple knew that appealing to a large audience was important in insuring a restaurant’s success, so the menu boasts everything from the Asian and Mediterranean-inspired to more traditional American fare.

Despite already nearing our limit on delicious cuisine (even with one thing on our plates), no one could resist digging into the cleverly named Cuffed & Stuffed Burger ($13), a cheat day favorite topped with bacon, onion rings, and chipotle mayo.

When we wander through the door in the early afternoon, nearly every

The Mediterranean Flatbread ($11) made it first to our plates, a dish we were surprised to find was vegetarian. Their housemade dough is topped with generous portions of marinated roma tomatoes, kalamata olives, and feta cheese, then garnished with a balsamic cucumber salad.

The meal then took a left turn into the dinner menu and the Roasted Rosemary Pork Tenderloin ($16), clear evidence of www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

Kevin’s culinary experience. The cabernet demi-glace finished tenderloin is bursting with flavor and served on on top of garlic mashed potatoes and the vegetable du jour. Just in case the veritable cornucopia of delicious dishes doesn’t overwhelm you, dessert is a can’t-miss. The White Chocolate Bread Pudding ($5.50) – saturated with caramel sauce and créme anglaise and topped with whipped cream – will tempt you to lick the plate. Though that’s probably frowned on. If you do end up licking the plate, it’s perfectly understandable. This St. Augustine gem will quickly become your date night, lunchtime, guests-are-in-townand-we-don’t-know-where-to-eat essential. 525 State Road 16, Unit 101 www.thepressstaugustine.com
