HELLO

THE HOME ISSUE

A

h Spring. You put such a pep in my step. Warmer temperatures. Daylight savings time. Fresh flowers. All things this Florida girl loves. Making this issue was the most fun I've had in a while. I got to frolic in a cabbage field, watch a glass blowing artist at work, taste the most delicious Bananas Foster ever, and finally meet 'Punch Jones.' You are holding our annual Home Issue purposely placed at this special time of year when we get out of our winter slums and get working on our spaces. Following the theme, we've picked a handful of interesting local stories all relative to homes in St. Augustine, in an offbeat kind of way. Read up on The Arc of St. Johns and their housing program we bet you didn't know about. Meet Shelby of Dog Days Gardens (she can help you learn to compost and plant that garden you always talk about). Or Heidi of Punch Jones (no her name is not 'Punch') featured on 72. She's the spitfire decorator and shop owner behind Punch Jones, that gas station turned design shop located just east of the Bridge of Lions you've always wondered about. That woman can turn your home into a designer's masterpiece with some attitude and quirk, no doubt. This town is made up of some seriously cool people and that's why I love living here. There's something to learn on every page in this issue, but pay special attention to The Home Experts on page 36. That's your go-to resource for your next home project featuring the local professionals you will want to know and call upon when it comes time to move, redesign, or renovate your space. Cheers to my favorite time of year in St. Augustine and thank you for welcoming St. Augustine Social into your home.

<< This is the furthest into the woods I've ever been in my life. I sent this selfie to Andrew on the day of the shoot for proof that I can hang in the woods. Or at least, hold a flash in the woods.

ABOUT THE COVER

For the Year

That day we went nerding out in an old cabbage field all in the name of the environment.

O

ne day when I was standing in the breakfast buffet line at Sunrise Rotary, Ryan Carter said to me "Hey, you should do a story on me" to which I responded "What exactly do you do?" That is pretty much how a lot of our stories in St. Augustine Social get started. People pitching to us. It's good ole fashion PR 101 and we love it. In Ryan's case, I had no idea about the cool job he is tasked with when it comes to affecting growth and development in St. Johns County. Since that day, I've learned a lot about the local land laws and how genuinely passionate Ryan is about the work he does – both indoors and outside. You can read his whole story on page 68. But what about your story? We want to hear it. Do you do something cool and offbeat? Do you know someone who has a really interesting career or story to tell? Tell us! Don't be scared or apprehensive! Our editors are on standby to meet the next really interesting person.

Listen for her most loved songs “The Only Thing Worth Fighting For” and “My Least Favorite Life” from the HBO Series "True Detective," in addition to new singles like “Shape Shifter” and her take on Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire.” Following Lynn’s performance at the Amphitheatre is Israel Nash, a selfproclaimed 'desert folklore' musician with a cool kid sound. ALABAMA SHAKES WITH DYLAN LEBLANC

GIPSY KINGS FEATURING NICOLAS REYES AND TONINO BALIARDO

St. Augustine Amphitheatre April 30, 8pm Sound & color demonstrates the tremendous strides made by a group of musicians who had only been playing together for a few months when they recorded their first album. As they prepare to return to the road, what shines through is a sense of pride and self-assuredness — feelings not often associated with the always-tricky sophomore album. Dylan LeBlanc knows second chances don’t come around often. But, neither do voices like his. Overwhelmed by the speed at which his gift took him from Applebee’s server to “the new Neil Young” in a matter of months, he walked away from an unlikely major label deal after releasing two critically acclaimed albums. 1340C A1A South www.staugamphitheatre.com

SALT-N-PEPA AND KID ‘N PLAY WITH ROB BASE, COOLIO, TONE LOC AND COLOR ME BADD St. Augustine Amphitheatre May 21, 7pm They are, undoubtedly, the group that changed the face of hip-hop as we know it. They also gave females across the globe a voice within their communities and the music industry as a whole. They are Salt-NPepa. Legends, icons, trailblazers, pioneers, innovators and trendsetters are just a few words often used to describe Salt-N-Pepa. Rob Base from Harlem, New York (born Robert Ginyard May 18, 1967) first began performing with a group called the Sure Shot Seven while in fifth grade. By the time of high school graduation, being only one of the members left in the group, Rob continued to work on becoming a Platinum artist. Coolio, there’s not much more to say. TONE LOC soared from obscurity into pop stardom in 1989 when his hoarse voice and unmistakable delivery made the song "Wild Thing" (using a sample from Van Halen's "Jamie's Cryin'") a massive hit winning countless other awards. "Color Me Badd" has 3 number 1 singles and 17 top 20 singles. "Color Me Badd’s" hit singles included "I Adore Mi Amor," "All 4 Love,” "Thinkin' Back," and "Slow Motion." 1340C A1A South, St. Augustine www.staugamphitheatre.com

TAYLOR FINDS TREASURE The search is always on for the sales manager and buyer at dhd Home. Taylor Hilaman, a 2012 Florida State grad, hunts for treasures “in the wild.” This means finding rare antiques and vintage collectibles in unexpected places: beneath years of dust in warehouses, long forgotten in storage units, or haggled over at swap meets, yard sales, estate sales and antique dealer gatherings. Interview by Sue Bjorkman | Photography by Rob Futrell How did this ‘addiction to the hunt’ get started? The first time I went to market, I was hooked. When I found my first Bitossi ashtray, I got really excited. I fell in love with their glazes and made it my mission to find pieces of it wherever I could. I’ve always loved antiques, art and history. This blends all that together perfectly. Every antique is an individual piece of art, because of the limited quantities. Are you the youngest ‘kid on the block’ in this business? Definitely. I think it benefits me to be the youngest sometimes. They

don’t take me seriously at first. I get better deals because they don’t think I could possibly know the value of these things so they don’t jack up the prices. Where do you find the best stuff? Everywhere. I’ve even got relatives around the country sending me things they found while thrifting. You never expect to find something amazing until suddenly you dust it off and there it is. A collector’s item. 56 San Marco Avenue www.debihanksdesign.com

BUSINESS NEWS THIS MONTH

Q&A

DOG DAY GARDENS

St. Augustine businesses are rebranding, relocating, building and brewing up some serious new opportunities for our small town. Here's what we know this month...

Operated by Shelby Stec, Dog Day Gardens is a local, organicallymanaged nursery, market garden, and composting business.

Nettles Fine Jewelry is opening its second location on Palencia Village Drive at The Shoppes at the Palencia Commons. 7458 US 1 Hwy North Suite 106

Interview by Sarah McCartan Photography by Brian Miller What is Dog Day Gardens about? Our demonstration garden and nursery are located on our half-acre homestead here in St. Augustine. The garden supplies us with food, but also acts as a place to experiment with new seed varieties and organic gardening techniques. We sell our organically grown, heirloom or open pollinated seedlings to local nurseries and the public. What services and resources do you provide? We strive to provide all of the resources local residents need to grow their own food through teaching, offering organic seedlings, creating garden plans, and installing gardens. We also help set up home composting systems and collect compost scraps from apartment dwellers to help lift the burden on our landfills. What's one of the biggest growing challenges Northeast Florida residents face? We have no soil and a lot of pests here, which deter many people from growing food. By building beds properly, composting, and dedicating part of your garden to pollinator plants you can be extremely successful. That’s where we can help.

30

"We strive to provide all of the resources local residents need to grow their own food"

How long have you been gardening and have you always wanted to have a business of this nature? I started gardening in 2009 when I took over an abandoned community garden in Tallahassee. I went to school to be an anthropologist and planned on working in the nonprofit sector; however, I fell in love with gardening and knew it was what I wanted to do immediately. I’ve worked with community gardens, on organic farms, and in food policy, but I’ve always had a passion for teaching so an educationbased business made the most sense for me. You can address social justice, the environment, animal rights and so much more through the production of good food. Plus, once you eat from a garden, grocery store food tastes awful.

What products do you offer at the Farmers Market? We sell seedlings, plugs (smaller seedlings that haven’t been up-potted), seeds and shrub (a cocktail and soda mixer that we make on the side). Tell us about the shrub you make. Shrub, or drinking vinegar, is something I’ve been making for years for friends and family. It’s great for a hydrating, healthy soda in the summer and makes a delectable craft cocktail. We only use Florida grown, organic produce and make everything in small batches, based on produce availability. I’m assuming dogs might be as much a part of your life as gardening? We have three dogs who basically rule our life. My partner Skyler and I both love to travel and realize that if we hadn’t acquired the pups we probably wouldn’t be here. We honored them in our name for that reason and because when you visit our garden everything is fenced in, blocked off, and covered in dog toys. www.dogdaygardens.com

Long Story Short

THE MARK AND MISSION OF THE ARC OF THE ST. JOHNS Executive Director, Kathy Jackson, provides insights into the outreach and impact of this community-focused organization, dedicated to serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Interview by Sarah McCartan | Photography by Rob Futrell How does The Arc of The St. Johns serve and impact our community? My mission is to continually measure the needs of our community concerning people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and do our best to meet the need. St. Johns County has experienced a tremendous about of growth and our organization has grown along with it. How many St. Johns County residents are you typically serving at any given time? The current number of people served in adult services is around 127 and in children’s services we average about 12. What's one program or initiative the public might not know that you offer? In the past couple of years we have expanded services to children and their families in the public school system with after school care so that families can continue to work. This service is probably one that the public doesn’t know about, as well as our children’s program which is a charter school and serves children ages 3-5 with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

SLIM DOWN FOR SUMMER 32

How many group homes do you in St. Johns county and how do these homes function? We now operate 10 group homes which are scattered throughout our county and we are one of very few agencies that offer behavioral supports and nursing services. Many years ago zoning was passed that allowed us to open homes in regular neighborhoods. The number of residents are limited to six. This allows our people to spend their lives in home-like settings and enjoy all of the amenities that the general population enjoys.

task. There are lots of needs everywhere, but we try to reiterate that the people we serve came into the world with a disability or acquired the disability before the age of 18. Sometimes families are overwhelmed with their child’s need and have to turn to the government for their support. This is particularly true for aging families where they physically can no longer care for their adult child’s needs. Our friends in the community can help us with this struggle by letting their representatives know of our needs.

How can the community support your organization? Fundraising is a very difficult

HISTORIC HOMES From the expansive Kirkside Residence, the place the Flaglers called "home," to the paint colors locals are able to use today, there's definitely some history to downtown home-ownership.

Looking Back

By Matt Armstrong

hances are you’ve heard of Henry Flagler, the railroad magnate and co-founder of Standard Oil. Today he’s entombed in a mausoleum at Memorial Presbyterian Church on Valencia Street, but 120 years ago he lived next door at his winter home called Kirkside (“kirk” is an old Scottish term for church). The house was built for Flagler’s third wife, Ida Alice Shourds. Designed by John Carrére and Thomas Hastings, Kirkside incorporated classical forms to create a southern colonial mansion with grounds that covered 5 acres. The 15 room house was finished and occupied in 1893.

150 paint colors used in St. Augustine history. These colors, used on houses and trim in St. Augustine throughout history act as guidelines for paint jobs today. This takes a lot of guesswork out of making sure a house remains true to the colors of its original time frame. 30 different colors for houses built pre-1840, 58 colors for houses 1840-1890, 79 colors for houses 1890-1940.

15 home colors were sampled in 1987. The city undertook a study to research paint colors used on Spanish colonial homes. The study showed

34

most houses were lime washed white, but some had color: earthy hues of ochre, tan, and mustard, but also pink and coral colors!

Paint colors changed with time. White and light colors were common until the onset of the Victorian era (1870s) and then things started getting colorful. Rich earthy colors were common, and sometimes contrasted starkly between the house, decorative trim elements, and shutters. Colors blossomed into brighter hues and pastels in the post-WWII period (19451970).

The Model Land Co. acquired The Kirkside Residence in 1950 and the house was demolished. An article in the Record on March 11, 1951 noted that for a time the four columns had remained and stood among the rubble like the ruins of the parthenon, but lamented that “the columns were being knocked down yesterday.” The land from the house and grounds were subdivided into 13 lots, which created the Kirkside subdivision.

There are 7 Historic Districts in St. Augustine; The city contains 7 Historic Districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places full of houses that utilize these colors: St. Augustine Town Plan (“Old Walled City”); Abbott Tract; Model Land Company; Lincolnville; North City; Fullerwood Park; Nelmar Terrace

1,542 historic buildings “contribute” to these districts collectively. This means they meet the criteria to be integral to the historic character of the area.

The Alexander Cottage Home Style

Tucked away in the shadow of the Lighthouse, Za and Jenna Alexander turned what was a dark, dreary bungalow, into a bright, white spacious dream cottage. By Sarah McCartan | Photography by Ed Taylor

60

S

t. Augustine residents Za and Jenna Alexander knew they wanted to purchase their first home together in an area convenient to downtown, in close proximity to the beach, and in a prime spot for raising their son Jensen. Thanks to the suggestion of one of Jenna’s clients, they were introduced to a 1950s bungalow in the Lighthouse Park neighborhood, before it went on the market. The location checked all of their must-haves. The only challenge — it had to be completely flipped. Though in rough shape, Jenna knew her mother Annie and stepfather Brandy Holland of East Coast Design & Construction, could put their interior design and construction expertise to the test, and work their home renovation magic to turn what some might consider a nightmare into what is now the inviting Alexander Cottage. FAMILY EFFORT “Can We?” This two word question rolled off the tongues of Jenna and Annie repeatedly when they first stepped foot in the house. The question was pointed at Brandy, the construction master.

In this case, not only could they do it. They did. “We didn’t have a crew or anything — it was just our family,” said Jenna. The renovation was a family effort every step of the way, beginning with Za walking through the home with a tape measurer and delivering specs to Annie, who then mapped out everything on paper. Though they had the vision of tearing down interior walls to open up the floor plan, due to extensive rotting and termite damage, they ended up taking out far more than they had originally bargained for. There were vines taking over both the inside and outside of the home that had to be cleared out. Brandy took down what he considers the hardest plaster walls he has ever conquered, weaved and bound with chicken wire. The floor had to be made level. And the house demanded new plumbing, new electric, and a new roof. MAKING SPACE Once they were out with the old, then came the creative part — design centered around making space — down to the inch.

Details Residents: Za and Jenna Alexander,

and their son Jensen (age 2) Amenities: 3 bedrooms, 2 bath, open concept living Size: 1200 sq. ft., plus 700 sq. ft. deck Originally Built: 1950s Renovated & Remodeled: March Nov. 2015; design by Jenna’s mother Annie Holland and construction by Brandy Holland of East Coast Design & Construction

Beyond the aesthetic, Annie’s design focus is always what makes people feel

comfortable within a space. Thanks to her functional approach, what was once a closed off space, became an open concept area that flows seamlessly between living, dining, and kitchen space, one that answers Za and Jenna’s request for a place of gathering. “Za and I love hosting and gathering and we really wanted a space that offered that opportunity — a space that makes our guests feel comfortable,” explained Jenna. A SUITE RETREAT What originally was an outdoor breezeway leading from the main house to a detached art space for the former resident, is now a walkthrough and entryway to the Alexander's master bedroom suite. Here, a second set of french doors opens directly to the deck. From this vantage point, they can see directly to the Lighthouse —

making out all the details, even the people standing top. “When Za and I are in bed, we can literally see the Lighthouse,” said Jenna. Beyond the sleeping quarters, the master bathroom addition includes a rain shower head, and custom vanity crafted by Brandy. ARTISTIC INTENTION The color palette for the Alexander Cottage largely consists of gray, white, gold and camel tones. In many ways, the bright, simplistic and clean approach Jenna takes to her paintings and photography carry over into her home, with splashes of deep green foliage present throughout. As for design inspirations and details, it was a mother-daughter effort, through and through.

www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

“Za and I love hosting and gathering and we really wanted a space that offered that opportunity — a space that makes our guests feel comfortable,” explained Jenna.

“We have this open mother-daughter relationship. It’s really fun working with her. She’s humble. She did all of this and is really good at what she does,” said Jenna. “She pulled my style out of me.” “Jenna knew some things she wanted like industrial lights and brass fixtures. Then it’s just a matter of finding the right ones,” added Annie. For Jenna and Annie, usually the creative visioning process starts with a text, or a Pin. “So mom and I, we text each other all the time, asking, ‘What do you think about this?’ ” explained Jenna. Not only do they share ideas back and forth constantly via text, they even catch themselves posting the same photo on their shared, secret Pinterest board. OUTDOOR LIVING The day the Alexanders purchased their home,

overhauled and refreshed. The addition of gray pavers lends space for both walkways and parking, while landscaping adds a fresh contrast of bright green.

Much of the neighborhood gathering takes place on the Alexander’s deck addition, connected to a back alleyway and neighboring homes. “The deck has become like our living room. We hang out there all the time,” said Jenna.

A Day in the Life

RYAN CARTER The great outdoors beckoned to Ryan Carter at the tender age of 17. A friend’s family owned an 80,000-acre ranch, and he spent hours exploring that property. Simply put, he fell in love with Florida – the land drove his curiosity to an eventual career. By Meeka Anne | Photography by Rob Futrell

L

ifelong curiosity led him on a journey that developed into his position as an environmental consultant and owner of Carter Environmental Services (CES), established in 2012. The Clean Water Act was expanded in 1972, which had a tremendous impact on how development initiated, particularly in North Florida, which is teeming with delicate wetlands. It’s a complicated process to navigate the federal, state and county regulations, and this is where CES comes to the table. The role of CES is to assess land based on all regulations and assist clients in obtaining permits. “The finesse is being able to compromise between what the developers want and a balance of regulations to hopefully yield a resolution that is fair and equitable to each side.” HOW IT ALL STARTED Once Ryan made the decision to pursue a career in ecology, he diligently put together a plan to reach his goals. While still a senior in high school, he became an intern with the Pinellas County Department of Environmental Management. In this arena, he learned about the field of

68

environmental consulting, and he had the opportunity to be involved in the establishment of the Brooker Creek Preserve, which is 8700 acres of forested wetlands and pine flatwoods. In 1997, he received his B.S. in Forest Resources and Conservation at the University of Florida. After working with ESI, another environmental consulting agency for nine years, Ryan was ready to make the jump into opening his own firm. THE DELICATE BALANCE This job is not just about obtaining permits, it is about achieving a balance of development and preservation. A typical day for Ryan may be relocating gopher tortoises along with the commensal species, which are dependent on tortoise burrows. Or perhaps, he will build a platform for an osprey nest. A current project is creating a wetland on an existing 640-acre farm by stopping the pumping and planting 220,000 trees. This restoration or creation of a wetland or habitat conservation area is called mitigation banking and is a vital aspect of his profession. THE TECHNOLOGY OF IT ALL Ryan recalled his early days in the field, www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

“Back in 1996, our equipment was inside a backpack with an antenna sticking out of it. Back at the office base station, there was another large antenna that went through the roof and all the data had to be correlated with the base station.” Ryan grew up in a home with the latest technology, so he had a bit of an edge. He laughed as he recalled his coworkers saying, “Let Carter figure it out.” Today, equipment includes a sub-meter accurate hand held GPS unit, which is used to mark the wetlands. They also utilize geographic information system mapping software, which has turned the field into a near exact science. THE BUSINESS SIDE Even though this passion began from a love of the outdoors, Ryan now finds himself inside the office walls much of the time. At this moment, he has 70 projects on his desk, which include single-family homes, docks, a 1000-unit subdivision and even a state road extension. He stays busy just coordinating this vast assortment of projects. His business is a family affair, and his wife handles the administrative office

management at home, while she raises their two children. COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY Ryan has always been committed to the community of St. Augustine, in which he has lived for the last 14 years. He has been involved with multiple organizations, including the Rotary Club and Young Professionals Group. Currently he is offering significantly discounted fees to Habitat for Humanity and Home Again for assistance in obtaining permits for new developments. TODAY’S CHALLENGES “When you’re dealing with raw land in North Florida, you have wetlands, particularly in St. Johns County. A lot of investigation goes on with the analysis that we do because every stitch of land in Florida has been touched at one time or another.” Ryan considers himself an ecologist, not an environmentalist. “An

Ryan still makes a point to get out of the office. “The unique part of the job is going outdoors and essentially hiking through the woods in all conditions and all habitats and mapping the forest habitat types. I always love being in the field and sometimes I’ll take my 10-year old son, and we’ll camp on a property I am working on.”

environmentalist is someone who has opinions based on passion, and an ecologist has opinions based on scientific facts,” Ryan explained. Ryan's passion for both the environment and factual analysis are two components that facilitate him to create the balance required to be successful in his field. 7 Waldo Street www.carterenv.com

THE CONRAD FAMILY With three boys under the age of four, it's play time all the time. This young family of five stays active close to home or in any one of St. Augustine's family-friendly local parks. Photography by Bethany Walter Meet the Conrad family. Hunter and Jane met in at their alma mater, North Greenville University, during undergrad. Jane, a mathematics major, and Hunter, an accounting and pre-law student, tied the knot after graduation. Today, the two celebrate their eighth anniversary while raising their young sons in The Oldest City. Jane is a stay at home super mom and piano lesson instructor Turning Point Academy of the Arts. Hunter is the Clerk of Court & Comptroller for St. Johns County. When there's not a cloud in the sky, you can typically find us... Since we have been blessed

to have a little bit of land we will often go outside and play baseball or football in the yard, or as our boys say we will go on "bear hunts." Other times we load up and go to the park for a few hours.

When we have out-oftown guests, we always... We love to go down to Crescent Beach to enjoy lunch or dinner at South Beach Grill. We also always try to make a point to take guests downtown to walk around and enjoy the city charm and dining options.

How I Got Here

HEIDI HALL-JONES First of all, let’s clarify a common misconception: the owner of Punch Jones Interiors is not named ‘Punch.’ Punch Jones is actually the name of the largest diamond of gem quality found in the United States. Punch Jones, the antiques and interior boutique, is a gem, too. And so is Heidi Hall-Jones, its owner. By Sue Bjorkman | Photography by Brian Miller

F

rom Punch Jones’ rooftop patio, Heidi Hall-Jones has one of those “wow-effect” views of downtown St. Augustine. The boutique shop is on the island side of the Bridge of Lions, in a 1930s building that once housed a gas station. “St. Augustine has really begun to find its footing. It’s a whole different vibe now,” said Heidi. “I’ve seen many changes since I’ve come here and all of them good." Heidi has seen many changes in her life, too. She’s been a print maker, a rock-nroll photographer in Paris, a metalsmith, jewelry maker and designer. And then there were those days in the corporate world in Chicago. It was that latest chapter that inadvertently led her to St. Augustine. Reeling from a divorce and yearning to start over, she and her young daughter struck out from Chicago to visit a friend in Melbourne, Florida. The road got long and they grew weary and stopped where they happened to be – St. Augustine. They ate at Gypsy Cab and found a nearby hotel. In the morning, they were intrigued by their new surroundings and didn’t want to leave. They ended up staying a week. And never made it further south. That first night Heidi had a very specific dream about a butteryellow house. In her wanderings, she discovered Summer Haven where a house – yes, it’s butter-yellow – was up for sale.

72

While admiring the spectacular rooftop view, Heidi contemplates the future. “We’re just one piece of this larger fabric here, all of us just trying to make a difference. I’m excited about the next piece of the Punch Jones journey. I’m excited to see where it goes.”

One look and Heidi was sold. Welcome home. This was 1992. A CONSTRUCTIVE CRUSH Two months later when she returned to sign the final real estate papers, Heidi saw a ‘For Sale’ sign at an old garage building on Anastasia Blvd. “It was love at first sight. I just loved the lines, the shape. It was what the French call a ‘coup de foudre,’ – a thunderclap. I thought ‘Oh my God,’ I’m going to buy this building.” So she did.

The circa 1935 building that now houses the elegant Punch Jones shop was formerly a Gulf gas station, then a radiator shop and then Captain’s Used Cars. The structure was still good, but Heidi describes it as a “disaster” when she first bought it. “There was 50 years of grime and junk in here. When I cleared it out, the magic started. The building started revealing itself,” she recalls. It took 18 months to renovate. Eradicating nearly 70 years of an

“I HAVE ONE EYE ON TRENDS, BUT I’M NOT DRIVEN BY THEM. IT’S IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW YOUR OWN EYE AND TRUST YOUR OWN INSTINCTS.” automotive past, the pressure-washer pummeled the walls. Decades of turquoise paint were swooshed away. Like a face with smile-lines hinting of a youthful past, the newly uncovered vintage bricks revealed faint 1920s-30s art deco style lettering. Stucco was blasted off walls in the adjoining room. The result now roughly resembles a mottled mosaic not unlike Venetian plaster. On the concrete floors, Heidi added a compass point out of inlaid steel. It’s like a “poor man’s terrazzo,” she laughed. A BUSINESS IS BORN AND REBORN She’s always been a ‘ junkyard dog,’ digging around for treasures and antiques, so the space was perfect for an antique store. Then she began to weave these funky goodies into her own home interior. Then into her friend’s houses. Then you know how it works – excellent work gets noticed. A new business

was born. Now in addition to antiques, Punch Jones offers an interior decorating service with a custom design component. Her design library is bursting with dozens of books filled with swatches, samples and inspiration.

trust your own instincts. I look for what I think others will enjoy but it also has to be things that please me. I like textural things, strong shapes, vintage craftsmanship,” she said. Interesting juxtaposition is her hallmark.

“It kind of unfolded naturally. I don’t have a degree in design, but I’ve been trained by life and everything I’ve done. I have an eye for how things go together.”

A curved object next to a cube next to a tower. Hard next to smooth, textured next to flat. She’s building a brand, a recognizable Punch Jones “look” around this concept. “It’s a combination of the old with the new, the high and the low. Mixing in one or two elegant items with something found on the side of the road. It’s an edited, thoughtful experience. It’s about building an unexpected, eclectic relationship between juxtaposed items. It’s about enlarging your visual vocabulary.”

OFF THE LEASH This “ junkyard dog,” continues to go offleash on her search in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, everywhere. Twice a year Heidi sells her fabulous finds at the furniture markets in Atlanta and High Point, North Carolina. With the impending launch of the Punch Jones website, she believes her new e-commerce business will soar. “I have one eye on trends, but I’m not driven by them. It’s important to follow your own eye and www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

f there is one word to best describe the philosophy of Home Again St. Johns, it is likely “collaboration.” This small nonprofit organization in St. Johns County is making great strides in their efforts to alleviate our county’s homeless challenges. From its inception, Home Again has been based on the concept of Coordinated Services – utilizing the combined efforts of professional providers, government agencies, individuals, and community organizations toward a common goal. In May of 2015, approval was granted to build a united service center to co-locate all of Home Again’s services at one site. Development of this center, to be known as the One Stop Homeless Service Center, is currently underway. Kassy Guy-Johanessen is the Director of Development at Home Again St. Johns. According to Kassy, St. Johns County has a larger problem with homelessness than most realize due to a lack of affordable housing. She asserts that alleviating this

74

issue can be done, but not without the support of all of our community members. Kassy invites St. Johns County residents to join the “Home Team” by making an investment in the creation of this muchneeded resource in our community. SERVICES One Stop Homeless Center, a common service location for the homeless population, was envisioned early in Home Again’s planning stages and is now coming to fruition. The project includes construction of a large multi-use building to house offices, a dining hall and a commercial kitchen; and two housing structures. Home Again’s existing programs will co-locate at the facility with professionals from their Provider Network, offering health care, mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, technical service training, basic education, job placement, and homeless prevention services. The "Drop In Center," located at the Home www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

Again offices on State Road 207, provides a place for the homeless to take a hot shower and wash their clothes. Volunteers at the center assist guests by signing them in, showing them how to use the washer and dryer, providing toiletries and towels for showers and offering snacks. SUCCESS STORIES Just in the past year, Home Again has helped over 700 homeless men, women and children with targeted access to vital services focused on ending homelessness. Kassy tells of one such success story, an 18 year old girl kicked out of her foster home at age 17 before she could earn her high school diploma. Due to assistance from Home Again, she is now living in an apartment, working on her GED and preparing to go to college. HOW TO HELP Volunteers and generous donations from the community are a vital part of the success of Home Again St. Johns. Please visit the Home Again website to contribute a financial donation and to see lists of volunteer opportunities and needed supplies. 1850 State Road 207 (904) 687-6043 www.homeagainsj.org

BANNER THOMAS The original bassist for Molly Hatchet, Banner Thomas is now taking a break from the 80s rock band lifestyle and enjoying all there is to do (and play!) in St. Johns County. His go-to-gig? Shredding bass at Tradewinds. Written and photographed by Steve Parr

B

ack in the late 1970s, “southern rock” was starting to fade. As some of the more popular southern rock bands of the 70s began to find their way into a slow retirement, a new crop of bands, southern born and bred, were starting to gain popularity. There were a lot of bands and a lot of musicians who were practitioners of this new southern

rock genre. One such band, hailing from Jacksonville, was the venerable Molly Hatchet and one such musician was bassist Banner Thomas. Born in Savannah, GA, Thomas moved to Jacksonville at an early age, and played his first professional gig at the age of 15. He’s been a professional musician ever since. As the original bassist for Molly Hatchet, he played an integral role in shaping the hard rock southern boogie sound that came to define the band. He was also responsible for what is arguably the biggest hit off their debut album, the song “Gator Country.” That debut album, entitled “Molly Hatchet,” was certified Gold on June 28, 1979. It went Platinum a year and a half later. As if that wasn’t enough, he co-wrote the band’s biggest hit, the title track off their triple platinum second album “Flirtin’ With Disaster.” Fast forward 36 years, and Banner Thomas is now living a quieter life than the one he had in the past, opting to stay outside the glaring spotlights of arena stages and the uncomfortable bunks in tour buses. Although he lives in Jacksonville, he flexes

his musical might in St. Augustine, playing with some of the more popular bands in the area. When asked what his biggest challenge as a musician is today, his answer is thought provoking: “I’m 61 years old and I’m trying to keep up with the me of 20 years ago. It’s hard.” After spending years on the road, it would fit that he has some amazing stories to tell and incredible memories to relive. He was quick to share his two most memorable musical moments. First was meeting bassist Billy Cox. Cox, who was the bass player for Jimi Hendrix, was Banner’s earliest idol. The second was opening for The Who in Nuremberg, Germany, in front of a crowd 150,000 strong. Banner Thomas is a bass player’s bass player. You can watch him work his four string magic with the Dewey Via Band on Monday nights and Those Guys on Tuesday nights, both at Tradewinds. Find Dewey at: www.facebook.com/ BannerThomasHungerForce

An Artist's Touch Person of Interest

His works of art take master-like focus and skill, but that doesn't mean this local glass artist can't have a little fun at the workplace. By Alexter Albury | Photography by Rob Futrell

In a modern, artistic space at 25 Palmer Street, beautiful colors of sun-drenched citrus, aquamarine, and indigo glisten and dance with other hues of nature. On palettes of twisted and stretched glass, patterns of brilliance weave and coalesce. This is the stunning blown glass art found on the walls and shelves of Thomas Long’s studio. The glass art of Thomas Long is truly something special to behold. Each piece is unique with its own story, contour, and size. Pieces range from the size of a small apple to the size of a dinner table. Glass marvels reminiscent of gorgeous lily pads and flowers floating on the still waters of exotic locales are testimonies to the artist’s vision and mastery of his medium.

Electric furnaces raging at over 2100 degrees hold Thomas' supply of molten glass. The fluid material burns in brilliant glory like miniature suns waiting for the brazen touch of the artist’s blowpipe. Thomas manipulates the golden ooze much as a conductor controls the tempo of an orchestra. With strategic twists of his wrists and controlled breaths through the blowpipe, Long shapes hot, colored glass into the radiant vision of his imagination. Long says, “I get a picture in my head of what I want to make, and then my body just does it.” His comfort and familiarity with the medium and tools of his trade make his difficult task seem quite casual. However, this connection and control over searing liquid glass was years in the making. “Over the years, my hands have become accustomed to heat,” said Thomas. “I have these hands that don't burn.” Laughing, the artist adds, “My kids call them asbestos hands! I was born to play with fire. Glass blowing is a perfect profession for me.” Though blowing glass would come later in life, Thomas' journey as an artist began at an early age. “I have always enjoyed art and always wanted to be an artist,” said Thomas. Art was never something foreign to him. He grew up in Texas where his mother was a commercial artist for a furniture company in Houston. Thomas' mother drew furniture designs for her employer that were featured in the newspaper. Her skill of drawing and mixing shapes and patterns to compose a complete room were not lost on the young Thomas. As a child, he would imitate his mother’s craft. “To this day I can draw some really incredible sofas,” Thomas jokes. But there was more driving the budding artist. There was another more dangerous calling in his young soul that begged to be released. “I had this fascination with fire. I was obsessed with it,” said Thomas. This love of flames led to some rather trying experiences for Thomas and his parents. “I set the carpet of my parents’ house on fire,” said Thomas behind a guilty smile. “I used to light pieces of paper on fire in the house and try to time the flame to go out before the paper hit the floor. I set the woods behind my house on fire once, and I set my neighbors roof on fire too!” Eventually, to the relief of his parents and neighbors, he grew out of his fire-starter stage. He was able to rein in the need to tempt fire but the desire to harness it lingered in his mind for years. A passion for art and composition lead Thomas to study architecture and engineering at the University of Texas from 1982-1985. Following his studies at

84

the University of Texas, Thomas began school at Texas Tech University. It was at this university where the fires of his past would greet his destiny. “At that time there was a glass blowing studio in the basement of the architecture building of Texas Tech,” said Thomas. “I walked past it for like the first six weeks of my classes. I always heard music coming out of it. So one day I went in to check it out.” Upon entering the studio, he was immediately struck by its sights and sounds. Gas furnaces thundering like jet engines meshed with the rolling rhythms of the blasting stereo resonated in the inquisitive artist’s ears. Students manipulating hot viscous glass with strange tools dazzled his vision.

Music is an intricate part of his creative process. “Music seems to be a common theme for glass blowers,” said Thomas. “If you go by a glass blowers studio and they’re not playing music something is wrong. If it doesn’t have music it doesn’t have soul. We never work without music.” With its rhythm, emotion, and choreography, music enhances those same attributes in the glass blowing process.

The beauty of the art, the urgency of the craft, and the orchestra of stimuli to the senses was enough to secure Thomas' attention. As he watched the glass blowers shape and mold their art, his need to try the medium grew. “It blew my mind that people were taking this molten stuff and putting it on a pipe and making beautiful art,” said Thomas. “I wanted to try it.” He studied the artists and their process, keeping a close eye on every step and motion. As he watched, he continued to ask questions and beg the artists to let him try glass blowing. Eventually, after using the ploy of telling them that the day was his birthday, Thomas was granted his wish of trying his hand at glass blowing. To the amazement of the artists, Thomas proved to be a natural talent. His innate abilities for the craft and the very short time that he had to study the artists work came together in a few moments that clearly showed Thomas' incredible potential. Those youthful years of a fascination with fire and a lifelong love of art finally found common ground. Glass blowing was what Thomas Long had been searching for. “The immediacy of the process appealed to every part of me. When I visualize something, I don’t want to wait to see it. I want it done as soon as possible. I want it now! Glass blowing gave that to me.” Thomas continued his art education beyond the campuses of the University of Texas and Texas Tech. Between the years of 1989 and 1992, he went on to study courses at The Penland School of Crafts and Tyler School of Art. During that time his skill and passion for glass blowing increased. In 2001, Thomas opened Creative Studios in St. Augustine, his first full time studio. Located in downtown St. Augustine on San Marco, Creative Studios welcomed onlookers with its open shutters that www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

The little boy who loved fire has become a man who can harness its power to create wondrous art. The inquisitive and bold college student has become a master of his craft. Thomas' dedication to his talent and the sheer splendor of his art have made him a highly sought-after artist. “No matter what, I will continue blowing glass,” said Thomas.

allowed many pedestrians the opportunity to see Thomas and his staff blowing glass. The studio was a big attraction for both tourists and locals. People couldn't pass up a chance to see him craft his art of mesmerizing patterns and astonishing colors. In 2005, Thomas moved into his current and much larger studio in West St. Augustine. The increased space of the new studio triggered even more creativity and opportunities for the artist. “We moved into a bigger space and began getting bigger jobs. When I’m working in a big space I think bigger,” said Thomas. Those grand designs of spectacular colored glass can be found all across the country. One design, "Coral Wave," boasts a width of over twelve feet and a height of seven and a half feet. The art piece, now residing in a home in Brigantine, NJ, is a marvel of precise composition and compelling colors. In various hues of blue, green, and red, Thomas' "Coral Wave" captures the essence of the ocean with hypnotic patterns on lustrous circular shapes. Another one of Thomas' ambitious sculptures is "Wellspring." The piece spans 100 feet of wall space in the Biological Sciences Building of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. "Wellspring" exhibits his familiar gift of color with the added elements of some of its components being made in the shape of biological cells.

“No matter what, I will continue blowing glass,” said Thomas. “It will always be a part of my life. There are other things that I want to do in the next season of my life, but glassblowing will always be a part of it.”

Actually, while standing before Thomas' art in his studio, it is easy to see why so many people have commissioned his work for private and public areas. The 4000 square foot space gives a feeling of openness and yet the art is not swallowed up by it. The exquisite glasswork is properly showcased in the space. People who visit Thomas' studio gain a scale for both the small and large pieces. They can visualize how their very own unique commission will look in their homes, offices, and restaurants. By giving his blown glass art such poetic titles as "Sunset Lotus," "Autumn Gold," and "Water Wisp," Thomas evokes a yearning for his work to be seen and shared with others. Mounted on walls, above fireplaces, or even as chandeliers, his creations enhance spaces with their translucency, composition, and color just as they do in his studio.

not playing music something is wrong. If it doesn’t have music it doesn’t have soul. We never work without music.” With its rhythm, emotion, and choreography, music enhances those same attributes in the glass blowing process. Both glass blowing and music share a sense of timing and personal connection. Thomas appreciates different styles of music. It is not uncommon for him and his assistants to work to the sounds of The Clash, Bootsy Collins, Led Zeppelin, or Devo. With a music selection as diverse as his color palette, Thomas creates the right atmosphere for each piece. After 30 years of blowing glass, Thomas is now at a place in life where he can reflect on his journey and ponder his future. The little boy who loved fire has become a man who can harness its power to create wondrous art. The inquisitive and bold college student has become a master of his craft. Thomas' dedication to his talent and the sheer splendor of his art have made him a highly sought-after artist. “It’s an amazing feeling to be at a point where people actually want my work,” said Thomas. With sculptures in places like the Arribas Brothers Gallery in Downtown Disney of Orlando and the Atlantis Casino and Resort of Reno, NV; it's enough for a less ambitious person to shut down the furnaces and relax. However, Thomas Long is not that kind of man. He is driven and he is an artist down to his very core. “No matter what, I will continue blowing glass,” said Thomas. “It will always be a part of my life. There are other things that I want to do in the next season of my life, but glassblowing will always be a part of it.” This is the kind of thinking and passion for his art that has brought him to his present state of being. It’s an example of determination, ingenuity, and big dreams that should inspire others to chase their own destinies. It’s also what Thomas addresses light-heartedly as his “30 year overnight story.” 25 Palmer Street www.thomaslongglass.com

It’s not only the adequate space of Thomas’ studio that inspires the creation of great art. Music is another intricate part of his creative process. “Music seems to be a common theme for glass blowers,” said Thomas. “If you go by a glass blowers studio and they’re

ocated in the South end of the Winn Dixie shopping center, at the intersection of U.S. 1 and State Road 207, is a diamond in the rough by the name of Falafel Queen. Going on five years of business, this unassuming, hole in the wall eatery serves up authentic Mediterranean cuisine that rivals that of larger, international cities — at least, so says my own tastebuds. The queen herself is owner and chef Eva Larocque. Larocque prepares her fresh sandwiches, platters and salads in front of her customers, while welcoming them with conversation. Customers have the option of dining in, and eating at the bar or one of Falafel Queen's handful of tables, or ordering take-out, and grabbing it to go. Although the Queen serves up a number of halal meats, there are also plenty of plant-based options that are entirely vegan. Though her cauliflower and eggplant wraps are hard to beat, it’s no surprise that one of the winning entrees on Falafel Queen’s menu is in fact, the signature falafel sandwich. For those unfamiliar, falafel is a fried patty of chickpeas. Historically made from fava beans,

chickpeas or a blend of both, falafel is an ancient dish that is eaten throughout the Middle East and beyond. Today, falafel patties are enjoyed around the world, both as a replacement for meat and as a form of street food. At Falafel Queen, these patties are moist and full of flavor. The falafel sandwich consists of pita bread, loaded with enough falafel for every bite, plus lettuce, tomato, radishes, and tahini (sesame) sauce, then wrapped up and served. Would you like your falafel on the spicy side, with jalapeños or hot sauce? You will be asked when ordering. Filling in size, the falafel sandwiches are priced under $6 bucks a pop. If you’re extra hungry, ask for a side order of hummus with chips. New to falafel? If you would prefer to try falafel in a more familiar form, the queen recently added a falafel veggie burger option to the menu, both vegan and kosher. Falafel Queen is open 11am - 8pm Monday Saturday. 1080 S. Ponce De Leon Blvd. (904) 217-4886

Culinary Character

MATTHEW BROWN Chef Matthew Brown is positively poetic with the culinary creations he designs for the patrons of Collage in downtown St. Augustine. By Meeka Anne | Photography by Rob Futrell

O

ne afternoon when Chef Matthew Brown was nine years old, his parents sat him down with a stern look on their faces. Apparently, one third of a bottle of their Cognac was missing, and they wanted answers. He sheepishly explained to them he had used it to prepare a recipe he had seen on Julia Child that week. Now the executive chef of both Collage and Blackfly, self-taught Chef Brown has turned his childhood passion into a brilliant career. Collage is a quaint 15-table global fusion restaurant, with just 49 place settings and often fully booked by lucky epicureans. Chef Brown has been their executive chef since 2012. His culinary expertise has put Collage on the map, winning the top 100 Restaurants in America on the reservation website, Open Table, two years in a row. EARLY INSPIRATION The early interest in food began innocently. Chef Brown’s mom was an intensive care nurse, working nights. It was important to her that her family of four children had a home cooked meal every evening. He quickly realized that the person who cooked was not required to do dishes or take out the trash. As the passion ignited, he began watching Julia Child and Jacques Pepin cooking shows. He would take notes and then recreate gourmet dishes for his siblings. THE JOURNEY Chef Brown challenged himself continuously as he climbed the culinary ladder. He left a high-paying position

92

It’s a great idea to know what a chef adores about his menu. He has recently created a cutting edge dish called Popcorn Scallops. It is a butter popcorn puree and a salted caramel Valencia almond crust on seared diver’s scallops. Even though he felt he was taking a risk with this dish, it has been very well received.

at Stonewood to accept a bottom level cooking position at One Ocean. This resulted in a 20,000 decrease in pay, but he felt he would expand his knowledge by starting at the bottom with Chef Ted Peters and working his way up. “I had all these cookbooks and I went through the Professional Chef Eighth Edition that they use at CI New York. I remember going to Publix and asking the butcher to save me veal bones, so I could learn to make demiglaze.” One Ocean was a sea of culinary greatness. “In addition to Chef Peters and Chef Nate Lindsay, there were two sous chefs, and an executive pastry chef. Then you had constant interns coming in from places like the Philippines and San Salvador, so there were so many influences coming in. One day you would be searing www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

off a piece of pricey foie gras, and next be making a grilled cheese sandwich.” His position at Collage was the result of a Craigslist ad. Owner Mike Hyatt wanted to expand his menu to a more artful global fusion style, in order to attract a more diverse clientele. He knew he had to find the right person to make this transition, and soon Chef Brown was immersed in a new position. CHALLENGES An executive chef position does not come without challenges. One large issue is finding staff that share the dedication and passion that Chef Brown and owners Mike Hyatt and Cindy Stangby insist upon. “When a young culinary comes in and his first question is about the salary

of an executive chef, he knows that they most likely don’t possess the passion they will need to get them through,” said Chef Brown. “People underestimate the anxiety that is involved in creating a dish, as you would think it would become easier with experience, but as you grow you have a reputation to live up to, and there becomes so much more to lose.” THE PHILOSOPHER Chef Brown possesses a calm philosophical temperament unlike what one might expect from a high profile chef. He recalled a recipe that his mentor Chef Peters had gotten from Gordon Ramsey, which had been passed down for generations before, starting with the famous chef, Escoffier. “It kind of hit me at that moment in some sort of metaphorical way that we were all through Chef Ted the culinary children of Escoffier.” And when asked what he loved most about his profession, the answer was a simple, “Instant gratification.” He compared his calling to other fields and said, “If you are an architect, it may take you five years to build a bridge. It takes so long to see the fruition of you work. As a chef, I get to experience that on multiple levels on a nightly basis.”

SECRET TO SUCCESS Humility is one of the secrets to Chef Brown’s success. With every new creation, he passes out samples to all kitchen and wait staff. And most importantly, he listens to what they have to say. In addition, he maintains personal relationships with all his vendors. He quizzes them daily about what their freshest ingredients are and what is in season. He uses local produce and always has a fresh fish on the menu. CHEF FAVORITES When asked what his most important ingredients were, Chef Brown replied, “Butter, salt, vinegar and tomatoes.” Clearly the Julia Child influence remains, as she often talked of butter being the Holy Grail of the culinary trade. He commented, “Use less salt and finish the dish with a splash of vinegar, and it will brighten and elevate everything in the dish.”

Behind the Bar

SCOTT DINGLER Introduced about six months ago to The Oak Room Restaurant and Lounge, Scott's 50 States Cocktails allow guests to take a crosscountry trip of libations. Photography by Brian Miller Tending bar since: Off and on his entire life Bartending at The Oak Room Restaurant and Lounge since: January 2015 Where did the idea for the 50 States Cocktails come from? The 50 States Cocktails were created as a way to start conversations amongst patrons. It gets people talking to each other about where they’re from and where they’ve been. If guests are talking amongst themselves they’re occupied, and the bartender doesn’t have to be their source of entertainment. It also encourages the purchase of more than one drink because they’re involved in a conversation, or maybe they want to try the cocktail from their new friend’s state. The 50 States menu also brings people back in that want to taste other state cocktails. The bar is located inside of the Double Tree by Hilton, how does this affect the demographic of your guests, locals versus tourists? It’s usually fifty-fifty, but on Friday and Saturday nights we have light jazz music from 7-11pm and we often see more locals then. Many of my previous regulars from Cortesse’s have followed me to The Oak Room and come in for wine or my infamous Espresso Martinis. We have a full bar and guests are not restricted to ordering off of the 50 States Cocktail menu. Are any of the 50 States Cocktails more popular than others? Yes, often guests will order drinks that they recognize. So, the Florida Citrus Drop Martini (similar to a lemon drop, but with citrus) and the California Mudslide are commonly ordered. I also get frequent requests for the Bloody BLT. I add

I can make nonalcoholic versions of many of them. We’re also starting a similar set of drinks soon for each of the 196 countries. One of those is Saudi Arabia’s drink, which is basically www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

What is the most challenging part of your job? Staying organized. With more than one bartender behind the bar, it’s easy for things to be moved around and not put back where they belong. THE PRESENT MOMENT CAFE Off the beaten downtown path, this veg-friendly hot spot will convince you to indulge (without the guilt). Written and Photographed by Steve Parr

t’s been said that variety is the spice of life. Even when there’s no shortage of great restaurants with various cuisines to choose from, it’s easy to fall into a groove of always opting for what’s become the most comfortable. Some folks like a great steak, while others will opt for seafood at every opportunity. There’s no shortage of either in St. Augustine. Far less prevalent, though, is vegetarian and vegan fare. It’s certainly out there, but you have to look a bit harder for it. And, when you go looking for it, odds are you’re going to find The Present Moment Cafe. In its almost tenth years in business (they'll celebrate their ten year anniversary in September), The Present Moment Cafe prides itself in "providing only the highest quality gourmet raw, organic food in an environmentally aligned, calming, down-to-earth-at-home atmosphere." It's

clear that owner Yvette Schindler, along with her staff, are dedicated to this philosophy. Going along with this philosophy is that everyone pretty much takes an active, and equal, role in running the restaurant on a daily basis. Kristin Amamczyk, one of the folks who helps see to the day-to-day operations likens it more to a family than a restaurant staff. The restaurant itself offers plenty of seating, both at tables and at a bar, and is bright and airy. Housed in a small, funky building on West King Street, The Present Moment Cafe offers a varied menu of vegetarian and vegan choices that can (and did) satisfy the staunchest of carnivores. For a nice light entree option, go for the nachos. Romaine lettuce tossed with a jalapeno vinaigrette and topped with taco pate, tomatoes, scallions, red pepper, guacamole, cashew sour cream (more on cashews in a minute), all served with their house-made tortilla chips. For $12, it’s difficult

to imagine not needing a “to go” box. Of course, you can’t be expected to enjoy a meal like this without enjoying something tasty to wash it all down with. Along with their extensive menu of notable plant-based drinks, The Present Moment Cafe also offers beer and wine selections for those wishing to imbibe. If you’re the type of person who can’t leave a restaurant without having dessert, the cashew vanilla ice cream is amazing. Made without a cow in sight, this ice cream will rival anything you can find in any grocery store. Whether you're a strict vegetarian or an old-school meat eater looking for something different, The Present Moment Cafe should definitely be on your short list.
