L
ife is often measured in milestones. Be it a birthday, anniversary, wedding, baby or holiday, each calls for a celebration to mark the occasion and to gather with friends. This issue - while it may seem no different from the last - is an occasion all its own: It's the anniversary issue! And because of that we're celebrating St. Augustine by bringing together the most seasonally festive issue we've created to date.

ABOUT THE COVER
For the Year
Shot on location at Monarch Studio, photographer Scott Smith turned our celebratory vision into a real life masterpiece.
H
ow do you exemplify the spirit of St. Augustine on the cover of a magazine? We ask ourselves this question every single issue. But it was especially top of mind for this specific issue because it falls at such a special time of year. For starters, it's our anniversary issue. Yep, it's been one whole year since we launched the magazine. Yay! Second, the issue falls during the holidays which means shopping, celebrating and shopping some more. And finally, it's wedding season! Since the ulitimate icon of any good party are balloons we enlisted local business owners Shane and Samantha from Celebrations to inflate a very special message we have for you this season: STAY LOCAL.....or cleverly #STALocal. Whether you are shopping, dining or celebrating supporting St. Augustine means spending your dollars at locally owned businesses run by locals just like you. And when you do - hashtag #STALOCAL to share the movement, encourage others to do the same and we'll feature our favorites in future issues.

TREAT YOURSELF The holiday season is here and while you love your family, sometimes a big get-together is more stress than joy. Take a load off and find your zen at a local spa with rejuvenating body treatments guaranteed to stimulate the mind and revive the body. Here are a few of our favorites to help you take the stress out of the holidays. By Alyssa Kinsey THE AROMATIC MOOR MUD What it does: Moor Mud, or black magma, is a scientifically proven healing agent, the use of which is dated back to ancient civilizations. Black magma has natural enzymes and vitamins that relieve sore muscles and encourages the body’s circulation. Why we love it: This body treatment takes us back to our childhood when playing with mud was socially acceptable; also, who wouldn’t want to experience the health benefits of black magma? Sounds pretty hardcore to us. The Spa At World Golf Village 955 Registry Boulevard ETERNAL BEAUTY RITUAL What it does: The Eternal Beauty Ritual uses a calming face and body greentea masque after a restoring silk polish exfoliation. This massage gives a youthful look by using warm balancing stones and antioxidants that defy signs of aging. Why we love it: If Ponce de Leon can come all the way from Europe in search of the Fountain of Youth, we can definitely love an age-defying body treatment, especially one that lasts 80 minutes and includes a stressreducing massage. THE ELEMENTAL HERBOLOGY BODY TREATMENT What it does: This treatment uses a body scrub with argan oil, papaya and macadamia. After exfoliation, guests can choose one of two hydrators: a Macadamia and Olive option that contains a subtle, ecocertified tanning agent or the Cucumber and Watermelon Seed Infusion that cools the newly-exfoliated skin. Why we love it: This body treatment should be beside the definition for “classic” in the dictionary. This time-honored exfoliation and hydration treatment is great for gifting to friends and family. Mon Petit Chou Spa & Salon 1829 Old Beach Road BODY FIRMING COFFEE INFUSION WRAP What it does: Skin is exfoliated first with specialty gloves and then massaged with a coffee-infused body butter. The body is then wrapped in sheets that reduce the appearance of cellulite while increasing circulation. Guests can let the wrap do all of the work while relaxing with a neck and scalp massage. Why we love it: 1) This treatment uses coffee as a main ingredient. 2) It reduces the appearance of cellulite. 3) It’s 90 minutes worth of leisure and relaxation. Need we say more? City Wellness 2225 A1A South, Suite B6
RAINDROP THERAPY What it does: The Raindrop Therapy treatment is a healing session that relieves back pain of all types and aids in balancing the nervous system. This 90-minute session uses a variety of essential oils on the spinal column to improve the immune system and encourage healing. Why we love it: This treatment uses allnatural essential oils to promote healing and health, not only in the body, but in the mind as well. We believe that a healthy mind and body are both extremely important, especially for St. Augustine drivers. City Wellness 2225 A1A South, Suite B6 TROPICAL ESCAPE BODY WRAP What it does: This tropical wrap is a nourishing body treatment that fights against sun damage and signs of aging. Extracts of pineapple and papaya are included in a rejuvenating Retinal A, polypeptide and collagen wrap. This wrap gives skin a firmer, smoother and brighter look. Why we love it: The Tropical Escape Body Wrap repairs sun damage and counteracts premature aging. Floridians are all painfully aware of how much damage the sun can do, so this is definitely one of our all-time favorite body treatments. Debbie’s Day Spa & Salon 403 Anastasia Boulevard

BUSINESS NEWS THIS MONTH
Q&A
St. Augustine businesses are rebranding, relocating, building and brewing up some serious new opportunities for our small town. Here's what we know this month...
OLDE TOWNE TOYS MOVES TO NEW LOCATION Locals don't have to travel far to find a great selection of educational, crafty and fun toys this holiday season–just a little farther down US 1 than before. Photography by Brian Miller What was your inspiration for opening a children's toy store? Our family went to a relative's wedding up in State College, PA. Our son was turning three at the time and we heard that we had to go to this toy store in town. We went in there and we saw all these cool toys. It was great! I just wanted everything in there. Then I said 'This is what St. Augustine is missing,' and about a year later I opened Olde Towne Toys. There are a lot of big box retailers out there, is it hard to compete with them? Yes and no. I look for products that are of better quality and aren't always found in the big box. We are also available to help customers find what they need. However, people's perception is that the big box will have everything and be cheaper. I know everyone wants a good deal. I want one too. But that's actually not always the case. I try to price my items very competitively. What types of toys can St. Augustine moms find in your store? A wide variety of toys for little newborns to the adult who enjoys having fun!

"I opened my store for the locals and I have found that most don't really want to go down King Street to get to my current location." I recently brought in some really nice dress up items from Canada that are adorable! I also have a robotic "ozobot" on the way. Of course we have Lego, Playmobil, Calico Critters, Thomas the Train, Pogo Sticks, Slacklines and zip lines and much more! The categories in our store are science, construction, games, arts and crafts, outdoor games, puzzles, pretend play, dressup, educational, early years, music and we have items for our special needs people. Why did you relocate your store to US 1? Exposure, exposure, exposure! It doesn't matter how much you advertise, if people drive by you all the time, they will remember you and stop in. It is also more convenient. I opened my store for the locals and I have found
that most don't really want to go down King Street to get to my current location. So, what's different about the new location? It has character! I am able to take the rooms and theme them into categories to make for easier shopping. I think customers will really like the feel of the new store. Are toys more expensive at a boutique retailer like yourself? Not always. We check prices around and most of my vendors dictate what the lowest price can be and that keeps us be competitive with the big box. I am usually the same price as anywhere else for the same item. I can't always compete with Amazon. I have a lot more expenses than those retailers; however, most times I am priced the same. Don't forget, a lot of times we have a sample of an item so you can touch and play with it. I try hard to keep all of the pricing reasonable so that people will choose Olde Towne Toys over the big box stores. 300 South Ponce De Leon Blvd. www.oldetownetoys.com

The Cheese Wheel and Sandwich Board’s new location used to belong to BT’s Beer Garden and is right next door to Ammar Beauty Supply Co. 223A West King Street The Kookaburra has a third location on Anastasia Island at 101 F Street and is perfect for the islanders who don’t want to cross a bridge to experience Kookaburra’s popular AussieAmerican coffee and pies. 101 F Street

BABES IN OLD TOWN
A modern take on a childhood classic, these dolls are imagined, crafted and sold by a mother-daughter team right here in St. Augustine. By Meaghan Alvarado
A
long history of sewing has brought together the family trio that makes up Babbie and Babe. What started out as a heart felt, handmade gift for a new baby in the family has evolved into a new business. Nora Fretto and her two daughters, Meghan Lemine and Amy Armstrong (of The Conservatorie) wanted a feminine business name that was as nostalgic as their ragdolls. Babbie and Babe were the names of two of Nora’s great aunts; two simplistic women with a penchant for collecting and enjoying special little treasures. The three women all started sewing at a young age. With Amy and Meghan’s grandmother’s collection of fabric and each of their creative talents, these women are enjoying fashioning their modern ragdolls. Amy and Nora craft the dolls here in St. Augustine and Meghan handles their

marketing strategy, social media, and Etsy site from out of town. Each of the one of a kind Babbie and Babe dolls starts from a standard unisex pattern. Nora expertly sews on French knots as eyes, and then the hair and mouth are felted on. The dolls are filled with 100% natural corn fiber, the clothing is made from recycled fabric from their inherited collection, and the hair on some of the dolls is made with natural alpaca or sheep’s wool. Once each doll is created, Meghan is usually tasked with inventing the character and story to go along with each doll. Some of the dolls are named after someone they know,
as a sort of tribute to the friend or family member the doll is inspired by. Babbie and Babe also offer custom dolls; they want children to relate to them, as well as serve an educational value on other cultures. Babbie and Babe dolls are currently sold on Etsy and will soon be entering retail boutiques in St. Augustine. www.etsy.com/shop/babbieandbabe
In 1879, citrus grove workers dug up seven sacred vessels on the west side of Oneida Street. Two silver chalices and other religious artifacts are now on loan from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts at the Mission Nombre de Dios Museum. The pieces date back as early as the 1600s, placing them among some of the earliest evidence of Christian worship practices in the United States. The Mission Nombre de Dios Museum seeks to educate and inform visitors about the Catholic faith history of the founding of St. Augustine, the missionary effort extending throughout Spanish Florida, and the growth of the Catholic Church to present day. www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

Style CLEAN AS A QUEEN If you ask us, bath time is arguable the best time of the day. No cell phones, no distractions, hot water and steam - yes please! A sanctuary of sorts. That’s why we love local soapmaker and purveyor or cleaning concoctions for the skin, Antoinette’s Bathhouse. When you walk into the hot pink eclectic boutique on King Street your immediate thought will be “I never knew so many soaps could exist.” Well they do... Each soap is handmade onsite by their team everyday. The store concept is inspired by Marie Antoinette who had her personal physicians create herbal, botanical and medicinal bath concoctions for both therapeutic and beauty purposes… and so should you. Scents range from traditional favorites like "Rosemary Mint" and “Brown Sugar Fig" to some kind of quirky combinations like “Ginger Snapped” and “Cereal Killer.” Whether clever or just down right crazy… every single bar is awesome. Did we mention they have bath bombs, salt scrubs and accessories too? This place is your stocking stuffer headquarters.

Photography by Brian Miller Most Interesting People I'm Following on Twitter I'm not into tweeting much at all, but I'm always trying to keep up with latest trends and technologies. So I'd have to say @DigitalDJTips and @DJTechTools. Current YouTube Session YouTube is great. I think you can pretty much learn how to anything by watching it. I tend to watch videos by DJ Brian S Redd and AGI Pro DJ the most. They both truly share their knowledge in hopes of raising the bar in the DJ and entertainment industry. Last Great Movie I Watched I have two small children, so I don't get to watch movies much these days. Favorite Magazine Surfer Magazine and Florida Sportsman. We all need to escape from the daily grind, so surfing and fishing are my escapes. If I can't get out and do it, I might as well read about it. Guilty Media Pleasure DJ bloopers

How long have you danced? Since I was 10 When did you discover your love for performing? The first time I danced onstage, I realized how much I loved performing roles and feeling completely free when I dance in front of an audience. I was dancing the role of Snow White and when I stepped onstage and felt the music and knew that I wanted to do this forever. What's your favorite style? Classical ballet and pointe What keeps you passionate about the sport? Continually learning variations and improving my technique during class time and performances. I love to learn new choreography, it keeps me interested. What's up next? Applying to dance programs in colleges! Right now, I'm in the process of completing applications and scheduling auditions at places like Boston Conservatory - which is my top choice at the moment.

How do you feel about playing the iconic role of Clara in the Nutcracker? I feel so honored to be given the role of Clara! She is such a famous character for Christmastime and I think her braveness and joyous spirit is something to admire. I am incredibly grateful to be given the opportunity to dance as Clara. What advice would you offer to aspiring dancers? I would advise young dancers to always strive to improve your artistry and technique, because that is what will look best when you are performing onstage in front of an audience. Also, make sure that you love what you're doing because if you don't have passion for the art form, it won't be enjoyable- and that's what it's all about. When you're not dancing...... I'm normally hanging out with friends or doing homework (senior year can be very tough!) I also have a love for fashion- I'm always trying to piece together outfits and styles that look different and trendy. www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

GREG MORRIS There are no Oompa-Loompas in sight and you’re probably not going to find a Golden Ticket hidden inside a candy bar, but Whetstone Chocolates certainly has its very own Willy Wonka. Greg Morris, Production Manager at the well-known local chocolatier, works tirelessly to make all of your sweet dreams come true. By Kara Pound | Photography by Rob Futrell

orris is responsible for the longtime, familyowned St. Augustine confectioner’s facility as well as producing more than a dozen flavors of fudge, nearly threedozen kinds of gelato, chocolate covered pretzels, truffles and a large assortment of specialty chocolates and caramels. “I have orders that I have to fill and deadlines that I have to meet,” Morris says from Whetstone Chocolate’s factory located on King Street. “I’m just a very hands on person and I can’t help but get involved in every facet of the business.” Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, Morris moved to St. Augustine at the age of 10. Today, he commutes from his home in Satsuma by the St. Johns River. Arriving around 8 am and staying until 5 pm every Monday thru Friday, Morris oversees a production crew of four. He’s also responsible for the factory’s inventory – making sure there

are enough ingredients, finished goods and packaging on-hand – as well as placing orders, organizing the production schedule and maintaining the building and machinery. “I make sure that all of the equipment is running smoothly,” says Morris. “We have the caramel depositor, which dispenses hot liquid caramel over pecans and cashews and then gets covered in chocolate for our ‘stone crabs.’ Then there’s our gelato machine, which makes fresh frozen gelato.” If you’ve ever taken a tour of the Whetstone Chocolate factory, then you know the machines Morris is referring to. If you haven’t, then you’re missing out. Depending on the season, the chocolatier offers four to eight guided tours per day for up to 25 people in a group. It begins with a history of the company, educational segment on the quality of and health benefits of chocolate and then a journey through the factory for a first-hand look. “Tours go through the factory and see what www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com
is being made. They get to taste the fudge and artisanal wrapped shells,” Morris says. “Ultimately, the best thing about my job is that I’m everybody’s hero. It’s nice to be appreciated.” A stop on the trolley and train tours, the Whetstone guided tour takes about 55 minutes. “I like to put on a show,” says Morris. “I make sure that there are things to see and that the tourists enjoy their time in my building. The best thing about this type of work is that we’re never making the same thing two days in a row. There’s a lot of variety.” Founded in 1967 by Henry and Esther Whetstone, Whetstone Chocolates has become one of St. Augustine’s most successful businesses. Today, with daughter Virginia at the helm, the company boasts three chocolate retail stores including St. George and King Streets and just over the bridge on Anastasia Boulevard. There’s also Tedi’s Olde Tyme Ice Cream, which is one of the oldest (if not the oldest) continuously occupied businesses on St. George Street. Morris joined the Whetstone family in 1989 as a production manager running the retail
side of the business at its old factory space on State Road 312. He spent 12 years with the company overseeing contract work for Nestlé and Hershey before leaving to explore other career opportunities. Fast-forward to the beginning of 2014 when Morris returned to his role as St. Augustine’s own Willy Wonka. “I have more responsibility this time around,” he explains. “But of all the things I’ve done, this has been my absolute favorite.” As Whetstone Chocolate’s go-to for day-today operations, Morris is up to the challenge. He oversees full production Tuesday thru Saturday and helps develop seasonal and holiday items such as Easter bunnies, a one-pound hollow football and even custom items like port wine truffles for San Sebastian Winery. “I found that what I enjoyed doing the most was making lots of different types of candy on a small scale rather than one type of

candy on a large scale,” Morris says of his second life at Whetstone. So whether it’s keeping an eye on the wrapping of thousands of pieces of chocolate per day or making sure the chocolate blends such as Aviles milk and De Leon and Menendez dark are just right, Morris enjoys every facet of his job. “I have a sweet tooth that is unquenchable,” Morris admits. “When I’m at home, I’m always making cookies and cakes. And, of course, I eat chocolate every day. That’s part of my job; tasting a piece of candy that comes off every line.”

remembers Samantha. “And within two weeks, we quit our jobs and the store was ours. It was meant to be.” Originally established some 22 years ago by Earl and Cindy Long, Celebrations, has remained St. Augustine’s go-to retail party store for decorations, balloons, rentals, catering supplies and so much more.

SHANE & SAMANTHA GIPSON Determined to redefine the party supply scene in the Oldest City, this young couple is breathing life back into decorating for many a special event at St. Augustine's oldest party store. By Kara Pound | Photography by Rob Futrell

little less than two years ago, Shane and Samantha Gipson were living in Orange Park raising two small children. Shane owned a tile and trim company and Samantha managed investment programs for real estate investment portfolios. The two northeast Florida natives were stressed out and overstretched. Visiting St. Augustine since they were

both kids, the Gipsons had a dream. They wanted to move to the nation’s oldest city, own their own business, and raise their kids, Ansley (now three) and Jackson (now five) by the beach. So Samantha started looking on Craigslist for a business opportunity. The second listing was an advertisement for a familyowned party supply store located on San Marco Avenue that was up for sale. “We came down the next night to see it,”
www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com
“Our passion for occasional décor started back on Memorial Day weekend in 2013 when we went to a friend’s wedding in Costa Rica,” says Shane. “They hadn’t planned any decorations, so I built an arbor out of driftwood and Samantha made a bouquet from found flowers.” Fast-forward to today and the Gipsons are just getting their feet wet as party supply storeowners. They readily admit that the first year was spent learning the ins and outs of the business including how to run a cash register and blow up balloons. “Now, we’re focusing on how to make Celebrations our store,” says Samantha. “We’ve started to make changes to the layout and are trending towards more custom items; less commercial products and more the kinds of things that you would find on Pinterest or Etsy.” Walking through the aisles of Celebrations, it’s obvious why this store has enjoyed such longevity. There is, simply, something for every occasion from luau-themed
“WE’VE STARTED TO MAKE CHANGES ...LIKE TRENDING TOWARDS MORE CUSTOM ITEMS; AND MORE THE KINDS OF THINGS YOU WOULD FIND ON PINTEREST OR ETSY.” paper goods in every color imaginable and dozens of items for baby showers to celebrating milestone birthdays and retirement. “Our clientele is mostly locals,” Samantha explains. “We’ve started to really branch out to reaching out-of-towners and helping to put on annual events such as Pink Up The Pace, The Kiwanis Club’s Boots & Bling fundraiser, and Pedro Menendez High School’s prom. Networking is a huge part of what we do.” The couple has been working on garnering a bigger social media presence including Facebook and Pinterest. They’re adding customized services like personalized invitations as well as tent, table, and linen rentals. Recently, Shane’s been building custom arbors and arches out of bamboo and other natural materials.
When Shane and Samantha aren’t busy growing an already successful St. Augustine institution, they take advantage of what’s most important to them, family. The Gipsons live on Anastasia Island and spend most of their free time on their offshore fishing boat, surfing, skateboarding and riding bikes with the kids. When the couple was renovating Celebrations’ interior, they did more than just move around the aisles. They also built a playroom in the back for Ansley, a toddler at Ancient City Christian Academy, and Jackson, a kindergartner at R. B. Hunt Elementary School. “I knew that I wanted to own my own business one day,” Samantha explains. “I did not like having to work so hard to make someone else rich. We wanted to build a business together, www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com
so that we could take turns spending time with the kids. That was our biggest motivation.” On a busy Saturday, the Gipsons fill as many as 500 balloons, which makes for sore hands, and run around town fulfilling custom requests and organizing events. Not to mention manning the store for customers purchasing last-minute party goods. “We’ve started offering one-of-a-kind signs, banners and cake toppers,” says Shane. “Whether you’re looking for a hundred miniature dream catchers or 200 fancy plates, we can get them. We are a one-stop shop.” 162-1 San Marco Avenue www.partystaug.com

FIREFIGHTERS FOR FAMILIES What began as a simple initiative to lend a helping hand to a few locals in need is now a reaching out to over 225 families this holiday season. By Sarah McCartan | Photography by Jason Green

W
hile best known for putting out fires and saving lives, St. Johns County Fire Rescue goes a step beyond each holiday season to ensure local children and families in need have ample clothing, warm meals, and toys, through a non-profit program, Firefighters for Families (FF4F). Firefighters for Families began in a grassroots format in the 1980s under the lead of Karin Wisnovsky, a Ponte Vedra resident with a passion for helping families in need. In 1999 it officially became Firefighters for Families. Although Firefighters is a foundational part of the name, a number of other community members are rooted in this initiative. For the past 16 years, local firefighters from St. Johns County and the City of St. Augustine, along with countless St. Johns County employees, Flagler Hospital employees, residents and private business

owners have worked together to provide a holiday meal, essential clothing, and toys to hundreds of local children. The St. Johns County School District and social service organizations help to identify the neediest of families. “We are privileged to live in such a vibrant and generous county whose residents help out their neighbors. This year we are expected to assist approximately 225 families and over 500 children,” said Deputy Chief Stephanie Whaley. According to Whaley, once families are identified, FF4F makes contact and provides the family with the opportunity to create a Christmas list for their children that meets program guidelines. “Once we receive this completed list which usually includes: clothing, toys, educational supplies and sporting equipment, representatives of the charity get busy shopping to make every effort to complete the lists for the families,” said Chief Whaley. www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com
The community is able to contribute by donating new items or adopting a local family. Donated items are sorted through and placed appropriately with the selected families. Those wishing to adopt a family receive a specific shopping list, which adds an extra personal touch to the process. Unlike a typical gift distribution program, FF4F passes off gift giving to the involved parents. Not only do the parents partake in wrapping the gifts, they get the joy of watching their children’s eyes as they unwrap. “Our hope is that through this process, we empower the parents and give them the ability to give the gifts to the children instead of the charity taking the credit,” explained Chief Whaley. HOW TO HELP The program operates year after year with the support of the community. Those interested in wrapping and toy sorting can volunteer on the following dates and times. Dec. 7-11, 8am - 3pm, Dec. 12, 10am - 2pm, Dec. 14-18, 8am - 3pm, Dec. 19 10am - 2pm. FF4F also is in need of volunteers to assist parents in picking up wrapped gifts. Founded in 1982, St. Augustine’s official running club brings runners of all levels, ages, and paces together for a time of socialization and running, multiple days every week of the year. How did you get into the business? I moved to St. Augustine in 2009 and was looking for something to help me adjust after leaving a 10 year relationship. I bought a month pass to the Bikram studio on the advice of a friend and started to attend class daily. I
loved the healing effect it had on me both physically and emotionally and I knew almost immediately that I wanted to become an instructor. I attended teacher training in the Fall of 2014 and took ownership of the studio this past summer. What do you love about your business? Everyone who comes to yoga is searching for something. Every yoga class is tailored especially for you. We all do the same postures but each of us takes away from it what we need. Whether it's physical, mental, emotional or spiritual, everyone who develops a regular practice experiences benefits. That's what keeps us coming back.

as a saucier in Florida’s renowned La Parisianne, learning the French way of cooking. While working at the vegetarian Manatee Café, Kenney began exploring the relationship between food and health, and went on to team up with Jacksonville’s Native Sun to deliver meals to sick homebound patients. Then, at Gypsy Cab Co., Kenney not only worked in an environment where the menu changed constantly, it was here he met his wife Deidre. Together these experiences served as driving forces in Kenney’s culinary journey, and in turn, helped inspire the food that graces his restaurant’s tables today. “Marianne Poncet at La Parisianne was very patient with me and taught me the basics of classic French Food. Cheryl Crosley at Manatee Café taught me the importance of food and health. Last but not least, Ned Pollock of Gypsy Cab was the one who got me going in my own direction and pushed me harder to become a better cook under pressure. He made me realize I could do something more,” explained Kenney. For Kenney, this “something more” took the shape of opening his own restaurant— an infusion of his experiences. Prior to opening, he traveled to Italy with Deidre and her family during olive and grape season. During this trip, while dining at www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com
a series of unpretentious and authentic, family-owned restaurants, the concept for the eatery took its form, and the name “Purple Olive” was decided. “There was something magical in Tuscany in early fall, with all the food. We were heavily inspired by our experience,” said Kenney. EAT PURPLE At the core of Purple Olive’s menu is food Kenney describes as approachable and handmade. “We try to be refined in our cooking methods, but purposely rustic. This is to make sure people know that our food is handmade,” he said. “We try to do as much from scratch cooking as possible, so we can tell people exactly what the ingredients are in our food.” The menu selections at Purple Olive are as diverse as the flavors and cultures represented on the menu. And menu ingredients are sourced locally and regionally when possible. “I

think our food offerings are unique because of the combination of experiences we have as a team in our kitchen. My cooks have a long list of experiences that provide us with the knowledge and ability to prepare a wide variety of cuisines,” said Kenney. At Purple Olive, options abound. Rather than choosing from a set menu, if they so choose, diners can mix and match from the Chef’s Grill selections and build their own dinner entirely—be it Herb Rubbed Tofu with Ginger Soy Sauce or Duck Breast in Blue Cheese Garlic Butter, served with a choice of sides, such as Kale with Garlic and Golden Raisins or Potato and Vidalia Onion Gratin. “We try to incorporate menu items for all people. We know dining out is hard when there are different diets going out to eat. At Purple Olive, diners can expect to order and enjoy a steak, tofu, and fish entrée all in one spot,” said Kenney. In addition to a full dinner menu with options ranging from plant-based to carnivore,

Purple Olive offers a Gluten-Free menu. And if you opt for an early dinner, you are granted access to a special Early Bird menu available nightly. Along with the intimate brick-and-mortar restaurant on the island, with the help of a catering operation, Purple Olive is able to host guests’ special moments beyond the bistro, and by doing so, has only continued to build upon its strong reputation within the community. Going forward, Kenney’s outlook includes maintaining the high quality he has set for Purple Olive, and remaining inspired. Ultimately Purple Olive doesn’t just tell his

own culinary story, it tells the story of food from around the world. It’s only natural Kenney continues to seek inspiration everywhere he goes, be it another country, or simply having a bite of a home-cooked meal, close to home. “I am inspired by traveling—seeing how other people interpret food,” he said. “Still, I am most commonly inspired by home cooks making do with limited resources to provide for themselves and their families.”

Behind the Bar
JULIE STOPPELLI A lifelong love for the artform of specialty coffee preparation led Julie Stoppelli to open a shop fueled by adventurous clientele and innovative menu items. Photography by Brian Miller Been a Barista since: I guess since age eight. I think I bought a Hamilton Beach espresso maker from Walmart for my mom for Christmas. Secretly, it was a "self gift." I wanted it, I loved the smell, hated the taste, but was fascinated by the flavor syrups. My parents were great sports who probably (hopefully!) never actually consumed anything I made them but made me feel good for trying.
Serving a regular clientele something new and different each visit isn't an easy task Julie and her team at DOS work to curate new menu items and introduce customers to drinks outside their comfort zones each and every day.
Serving up Coffee at DOS since: April 2013 What is DOS best known for? Pour over coffee and espresso. People love our lattes (especially the pumpkin!), but customers are often surprised how sweet our straight espresso or black coffee can be. People get a lot of single origin regular ole' pour over cups of coffees. Don't get me started on the Nitro cold brew! It has developed somewhat of a cult following. We brew constantly to keep kegs of cold brew on tap. Part of your job that keeps you coming back day after day? We are slightly off the beaten path and the local support has been wonderful. We appreciate our regulars and they, I think, appreciate that we are constantly working to improve and bring new offerings. Favorite drink on the menu... (currently) Coffee: Nicaragua Don Francisco Pour over black; Wine: Spann Vinyard Betsy Bachacher Lot 11 Red blend; Beer: Southern Tier Warlock Imperial Pumpkin Stout
94
What do you enjoy most about the DOS clientele? They are a fun, interesting, and diverse bunch that seem to be thankful we opened up way over here out in the boonies – but we should be thanking them for their constant support!
What are you best known for behind the "coffee" bar? I'd say I'm probably known as the lady that makes coffee with one arm because there is a baby in the other....it's kind of unique, a skill that can't be taught.
Most challenging part of your job? Craft coffee and craft-anything requires a dedication to consistency and quality. All the winetastings I do can be tough (...okay, I'm lying about that one).
Skill that makes you a top notch barista? A palate that loves new, interesting, and subtle flavors. Plus attention to detail, and cleanliness...a great barista is a tidy barista.

owntown St. Augustine can easily induce sensory overload. There’s so much of everything that it’s easy to go right past something that, frankly, you really don’t want to miss. Nestled on the edge of the historic district, at 25 Cuna Street, is one such place: Michael’s Tasting Room. Executive Chef Michael Lugo, who’s getting ready to celebrate his 10th year in business, opened his eatery in 2006. In those ten years, his restaurant has received Wine Spectator’s “Award Of Excellence” eight years in a row; an honor for which Lugo is rightly proud. As you step through the door, you’re immediately aware that Michael’s Tasting

The restaurant can comfortably seat 50 people, providing an intimate dining experience, perfect for a date night or small celebratory gathering. Additionally, the space boasts a small patio and private dining room. There are some 1,200 bottles of wine on hand at any one time, from some 350 separate labels. Beer and non-alcoholic drinks are also available, including cappuccino and espresso.
