From Us
WELLNESS & WEDDINGS Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a motivated team to create the magazine you have before you. While every issue is a collection of our favorite stories around St. Augustine, we're always bound to have a favorite!
-Andrew Vreeland Publisher

There’s only one word to describe Rype & Readi's co-owner Sebastien – jolly! I have never met anyone more happy than him. He truly cares about keeping his community healthy and as organic as possible. When he opened Rype & Readi a little over two years ago he helped start a revolution with the assistance of some other local restaurants to bring in as many fresh products as he could. Now through numerous events and community sponsorships his farm has become a destination for families!

This issue we celebrate our two year anniversary publishing St. Augustine Social. It's true about life and making magazines – when you light a candle for someone else, it also brightens your path. We work everyday to shine a light on the most interesting stories taking shape in our town and just like that we find ourselves sending a magazine off to print with even more appreciation and admiration for this town than we had before. Thank you for being with us on this journey and inspiring us everyday!

Can we just take a minute and appreciate that the Eat Local Guide saved me three times this fall? If I had to answer the question "I don't know, where do you want to eat?" one more time I was going to lose it! Walking the streets of St. Augustine all the time, I am always grabbing stuff on the go, so it's been nice to be able to sit still, with family gathered around, and enjoy an amazing meal from some of the best local eateries. Our favorites? The Floridian, Barnacle Bill's, and Mellow Mushroom!

I loved making this issue with a new friend! We recently welcomed Molly, a former editorial intern, to join our editorial team permanently! I had so much fun teaching her tricks of the editorial trade. As you might have seen on our Instagram story, we had a super fun day 'shopping' around town for all the local items shown in our product pick features (pages 40-46). Looking for an internship like Molly's? Awesome! You can apply to join our team by filling out the internship form on occasionsmediagroup.com!

Haven Horse Ranch has to be my favorite unexpected story in this issue. Even having lived in the city for a few years now, I had never heard of them or the amazing work that they’re doing. Ric Lehman exudes such passion when he talks about the miracles that their equine therapy fosters and his enthusiasm is contagious. Each story that he told us convinced me more and more that everyone in St. Augustine needs to know about this place!

Best part of this issue? There's an oxygen bar in St. Augustine! I've been telling Heather for months that I want to keep an oxygen tank under the bed and wake up to a a little fresh air. Growing up we Summered in North West Maine and every time we climbed out of my Dad's plane my Mom instructed us to breathe that fresh air in deep. Now you can get the same benefits right here in St. Auggie. It's 90% pure oxygen and costs $1 per minute. Breathe deep on page 32!

very issue, we scour our photographs to find the one that really exemplifies the theme of the magazine. When planning our editorial, we are sure to photograph each of our subjects in order to fully tell their story – our special advertising sections are no different. You might notice that every issue we create has such a section that is centered around the magazine’s theme. Going into the new year, we give local businesses involved with getting fit and staying healthy the chance to promote their business in a way like never before to the people of St. Augustine. We send photographers to their businesses, interview their teams and, in turn, produce valuable content marketing that works to familiarize readers with their brands.

This issue, we needed a cover that showed our beautiful city what wellness in St. Augustine is really about. This time we landed on the team at The Academy. Though the photograph does come from the Wellness Guide (meaning The Academy paid for an advertisement) they didn’t pay for the cover. That’s just not how our process works. When we saw their photograph, we knew that these strong and enthusiastic trainers would perfectly represent St. Augustine health.

William is the kind of baby who smiles with his whole body, even when he’s woken up during a tour of his fish-motif room. Little Will and his parents Linda and Jeffrey Dumas moved into their newlybuilt home in Menendez Park last April, when he was just two weeks old. Welcoming and uncluttered, this home was built around the dream that this child will spend his entire childhood here. Lucky boy.

From the mouth of Katherine Kennedy.. When Hurricane Matthew hit, it didn’t just hit a town of nine to fivers; it hit a town of restaurant owners, musicians, craft bartenders, artists, and fishermen. These unique people, to no surprise at all, have come together post-hurricane in an effort to help one another rebuild their livelihoods. They gave what they could – their time, their money, their food, and their talents to ensure that St. Augustine would stay the charming town everyone knows and loves.

GROW YOUR OWN MICRONUTRIENTS By Sue Bjorkman

ity Wellness is an organic spa and wellness center that, in addition to an infrared sauna, offers spa services, yoga, acupuncture, physical therapy, and health and nutritional counseling. What’s the difference between an infrared sauna and a traditional sauna? For one thing, it feels less hot! A traditional sauna warms your body by heating the air around you. An infrared sauna produces the same effects on your body – sweating, increased heart rate – at lower temperatures than a traditional sauna by heating the body directly from within, since infrared waves penetrate deep within the body. Chelsea Jo Conard, City Wellness’ owner, explains, “Infrared is a dry heat, so it doesn’t feel suffocating. It’s relaxing and calming; and we’ve also included light therapy and soothing music in our sauna if you so choose.” Infrared
sauna therapy is quickly gaining mainstream attention due to its many healing benefits, especially when paired with other therapies like massage, facial or yoga. “Infrared increases the muscular benefits of a yoga class by helping to repair muscle tissue, burning calories, and helping the body’s natural ability to detox. Before a massage, an infrared sauna visit will help to loosen up muscle tissue so the therapist can more efficiently release muscle knots, tension, and bound fascia. Infrared is also a powerful anti-aging tool for the skin. It helps boost collagen production, so it’s ideal after a facial!" For those new to the infrared sauna, Chelsea recommends starting with 15 or 30 minutes, and eventually working up to 60 minute treatments. 120 Sea Grove Main Street www.citywellnessfl.com

MIRACULOUS MORINGA
St. Augustine businesses are rebranding, relocating, building and brewing up some serious new opportunities for our small town. Here's what we know this month...
Maureen Kyle’s Moringa Plantation grows ‘Trees of Life’ right here in St. Augustine. By Sue Bjorkman
M
aureen Kyle’s business began in a very “Jack-inthe-Beanstalk” way – minus the scary giant. It all started with 12 “magic beans” that grew into 12-feet tall trees in just months. It’s not a fairy tale, though, just a fascinating nutritional discovery – the Moringa Olifera tree. Dubbed the “Tree of Life,” it’s thought to be the most nutrient-rich plant on earth. Dating back to 200 BC, it’s been used in more than 90 countries for its medicinal properties. In Maureen’s life, it dates back to 2008, the year she moved to St. Augustine. Maureen, owner of the Moringa Plantation products, was introduced to moringa through her oldest daughter serving in the Peace Corps in Guinea, Africa. There it’s called “the Miracle tree,” and her daughter suggested it might do “amazing things” for her sisters’ health. “Two of my daughters have Down Syndrome,” says Maureen. “The main reason I got into moringa was to see if it could

Celebrations has moved its business to Lighthouse Plaza. For all your event decorations, rentals, and party advice needs, this local party store should be your go-to! 900 Anastasia Boulevard improve my family’s health.” Maureen and husband Warren have five children between the ages of 15 and 30. In “The Moringa Consumer Awareness Guide,” author Tim R. Juback says moringa has 18 amino acids, 40 antioxidants, and 92 nutrients, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients. It boasts the highest protein level of any plant and also offers antiaging and circulatory benefits. All this convinced Maureen, who served 12 years in Marine Corps as an Air Defense Controller, earned a Master’s in Art Psychotherapy, and still teaches art at Turning Point Christian Academy, to become a moringa farmer. Florida is one of the few U.S. states where moringa will grow, so the seeds her daughter sent immediately thrived. Maureen became an expert on pruning and harvesting and on the plant’s spectacular potential. She now has 200 trees on a fouracre “plantation” she maintains herself. By her third growing season, she began selling dried
leaves and six vinegar-based “tonics” at the local Farmer’s Markets for $10 each. For those looking to plant a "Miracle tree" of their own, Maureen offers instructions on transplanting and caring for moringa in our North Florida soil. (Green-thumbs will be delighted to know moringa trees thrive in sunny environments.) “I use moringa in everything I can sneak it into, from smoothies to sandwiches to salad dressings,” she says. And it shows. Her family’s health has visibly improved. The girls, who used to suffer four or five yearly hospitalizations for croup, now rarely get ill. Her once-skeptical husband is now a believer, too. “At the market, I love when people stop to talk, try it, then come back and say it’s working. It’s worth it to me for that. This is a labor of love,” she says. So there is a ‘giant’ in this tale after all. Maureen’s giant heart… 510 Outlet Mall Boulevard, Suite 1070 www.moringaplantation.org

OXYGEN BAR BOOST By Meeka Anne
All it takes is one glance at Cathlene Miner to see that she is all about good health. With her history of working as a personal trainer for 22 years and at the Mayo Clinic for 12 years, she is passionate about all things that can naturally enhance one’s vitality. One option at the tanning salon, Sawyere and the Sea, she opened in March is the use of her oxygen bar. An oxygen bar is a place that offers non-medical oxygen which is around 90% pure oxygen compared to the approximately 21% that we breathe naturally. An extra bonus at Cathlene’s 02 bar is the use of aromatherapy blends in the oxygen that offer a myriad of benefits. Choose from four blends that range from an energizing citrus to a sinus opening eucalyptus mix. The cost is $1 per minute and for best results expect to stay about 20 minutes. Cathlene said, “I use the oxygen consistently as it gives me more energy and reduces the toxic load in my body.” She also recommends the lavender and peppermint blend for those who suffer from headaches. 1572 U.S. 1 North www.sawyereandthesea.com

HEALING AT HAVEN HORSE RANCH

ic Lehman, executive director of Haven Horse Ranch knows horses and he knows miracles, having witnessed many firsthand through his work with equine therapy. “Miracles come in all forms, shapes, and sizes,” said Ric. The 26-acre ranch was founded 27 years ago after Ric observed and compared the differences in teens who had grown up with horses in relation to those who had not. “Everything about the kid with horses was head and shoulders above their peers,” said Ric. He began the ranch as a recreational facility, but fate stepped in one day in the form of a 13-year old autistic girl who visited the ranch with a group. Hesitant at first, but with gentle coaxing, she at last mounted the horse, and within minutes went from cooing, to chuckling, to full out laughter. “I looked over at the counselor and she was sobbing. I didn’t get it at first,” said Ric. The counselor informed Ric that the child had never expressed an emotion, never made a sound until that moment. As they say, the rest is history. Even though there was no such thing as equine therapy at the time, they just kept doing it because it worked. “It was almost 10 years before we started figuring out the science behind why it worked.” Reasons range from the www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com
simple enjoyment of being on a horse to the stimulation of the vestibular system. Currently the ranch has 16 horses, including patient favorites Orian and Fancy (both rescue horses) who work their magic in 95 individual sessions of therapy and lessons weekly. The ranch is part of the program of the Duval Detention Academy, Brooks Rehab and The Arc. They are also the exclusive equine therapy provider for WellCare and Staywell. Last March, Barbara Adler began bringing her 8-year-old autistic grandson. “Daniel has gotten much more confident. The first session it took him 15-minutes to get on the horse. Now he gets right on and even speaks to the horse,” she said. Ric never turns a patient away due to financial reasons. Therapy is free, but he does ask caregivers to donate time or a regular monetary contribution. Those unable to do either often help with fundraising. Haven Horse Ranch covers overhead with lessons and camps, but they need support from donors for the therapy sessions. “We’re a non-profit organization. Over the last five years we have increased the number of people we serve by 350%," he said. "We’ve cut our costs, but there’s so much more we can do with support." 7333 County Road 208 www.havenhorseranch.org

or knowingly brought infected people into the city (by boat or any other means) there were consequences. In 1877 there was a maximum $50 fine and up to 20 days in jail for each instance of breaking the law. The quarantine station in St. Augustine wasn’t much of a station at all, just a yellow flag in the sand near the inlet. Ships might have to spend four days in quarantine for an inspection to be completed, and no communication was allowed between ships. If they were found to be infected they would be sent north to Fernandina for treatment, or even further abroad at times. A notice from 1880 indicates the Board of Health voted to direct “all vessels infected, and all vessels from infected ports arriving on this coast, to the Sapelo Quarantine Station in Sapelo Sound, Georgia.” And you thought downtown traffic was inconvenient!

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION The legend inextricably linked to Ponce de Leon is that he came to Florida in search of medicine via the Fountain of Youth – while there was no Fountain of Youth, there were a lot of opportunities to get sick. By Matt Armstrong
U
ntil relatively recent times, people in St. Augustine didn’t know what caused some of the deadliest illnesses that faced them, let alone how to treat them. A logical solution to the spread of disease was to not let any sick people into the city, which of course, was easier said than done. Unfortunately for the containment of infectious diseases, St. Augustine was a popular destination for sick people. In the late 1800s, droves of northerns descended to St. Augustine for their own Fountain of Youth: a mild winter climate to alleviate the symptoms of “consumption,” which wouldn't become formally known as “tuberculosis”

until the tubercle bacillus bacteria was discovered in 1882. In an effort to stave off “contagious, infectious, or pestilential disease” (of chief concern among these were yellow fever and smallpox), the city Board of Health enacted quarantine laws. This meant that people entering the town by boat from May 1 to November 15, when epidemics were likely to occur, had to anchor at a quarantine station and be inspected by a port physician who made sure that there were no pathogenic stow-aways. If they were traveling from a foreign port they were required to stop regardless of the month. If you didn’t stop at the quarantine station www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com

Style COMING BACK STRONGER By Molly Wilson Hurricane Matthew was devastating to an enormous amount of people and businesses in our community. Our team were some of the lucky ones. Our homes suffered little to no damage and my life was (essentially) back to normal by Sunday afternoon. What was most astonishing about the whole ordeal, however, was not the devastation, but the aftermath. As the clouds and rain receded and the city stood up still reeling, local citizens made aggressive efforts to help those who had suffered losses – individuals and businesses alike. Cleanup crews were organized and donations were freely made. The Ancient City begin to piece itself back together, stronger. This is what the STA Strong necklace represents. It is the strength of a community reaching its hands out. It is the fortunate giving strength to the unfortunate. “I was fortunate enough to have minor damage to my home and shop,” says Anchor Boutique owner Laurel Baker, “The emotions of not knowing if my home was even livable after flooding, has prompted me to find my own way to help others in our community who were not so fortunate.” The necklace is available in gold ($75) or silver ($60) and all profits go to aiding the relief efforts in St. Augustine.

Family Tree (House) Near the beach and surrounded by trees, Jeffrey and Linda Dumas’s custom dream home gives the young family roots. By Sue Bjorkman | Photography by Ed Taylor

illiam is the kind of baby who smiles with his whole body, even when he’s woken up during a tour of his fish-motif room. Little Will and his parents, Linda and Jeffrey Dumas, moved into their newly-built home in Menendez Park last April, when he was just two weeks old. Welcoming and uncluttered, this home was built around the dream that this child will spend his entire childhood here. Lucky boy.
PARADISE FOUND Jeffrey and Linda moved to St. Augustine in 2010 from Boston. City-weary, they dreamed of living near the beach and were thrilled to discover a town where that was still possible. On their first visit, they fell in love with the area and soon made the move. They found jobs in their healthcare field — Linda is a pharmacist and Jeffrey is a Physical Therapist Assistant — and then got busy househunting.
A comforting canopy of palms, magnolias, and live oaks dripping with Spanish moss envelops the home. They designed a reverse floor plan so it would feel like a treehouse. The main living space on the second level has an abundance of ‘naked’ windows – 24 upstairs alone – to maximize the effect. “We have no curtains, on purpose,” says Linda. “I wanted to look out and just see trees and sky. You can never have too many windows.” It works. The thick vegetation bordering Anastasia State Park is directly across the street. As many trees as possible were saved when building, including the relocation of five palm trees. “Trees are the vernacular of the neighborhood,” says Jeffrey.
In 2014, they found a “really overgrown jungle” lot in an ideal location. Over the next two years, they turned potential into paradise. The four-bedroom home is 2,700 square feet with another 1,200 square feet of porches and decks. It has two and a half baths (three counting the outdoor shower). The open floor plan and ten foot ceilings give it an expansive, airy feel. LOCAL FOCUS They utilized local businesses and products as much as possible. This truly custom “nest” was created with help from Bob Esposito of Esposito Designs and built by Brandon Construction. “We really loved all

the coquina here. It’s not something you see anywhere else,” says Linda. They achieved a similar look by using stucco with shell dash (tabby) on the lower exterior and as a fireplace feature. The exterior’s upper half is Western Red Cedar shingles. They adamantly use all-natural materials, like cedar, marble, shells, and wood. LIVING SPACE Three oversized windows and two in the corners allow abundant natural light to pour into the living room. A large Fiddle Leaf Fig from Southern Horticulture, thrives. The comfy oversized grey and white chairs and couch are Ethan Allen but most other pieces are from West to East on San Marco. Decorator Rachael Hanson guided their choices. “We sold everything and started from fresh,” says Linda. “It’s a classic look, but also a little rustic.” "Or a modern beach cottage style," Jeffrey adds. A harmonious

palette of grey, blue and white (all Sherwin Williams paints) enhance the walls throughout. The floors are a luxury vinyl in Alabaster Oak, a light grey color reminiscent of a windswept boardwalk. The cherry wood fireplace mantle is pretty special, they say, it was the last thing they bought together before Linda went into labor. While shopping at Jacksonville store Eco-Relics, the salesperson feared Linda would have the baby any minute, so they got “the baby discount.” Deal. They bought the beautiful piece and drove straight to Flagler Hospital where William was later born. Outside, the upper level eight-footwide porch with Trex flooring provides a peaceful sanctuary. A similar deck is off the kitchen and another patio below. The large farmhouse table is the inviting link to the kitchen. The gas range with a vertical hood is

The upstairs living space has a “treehouse feel with its ten foot ceilings and numerous windows capturing the views at leaf-level. Lines between living, dining and kitchen areas are blurred in this open, uncluttered flow. imbedded in an island topped in a solid quartzite block in “London Fog” design. A natural stone, quartzite is harder than granite and resembles marble. The farmer’s white cast-iron sink, framed by white cabinets with glass panels, is in front of a window with sunset views. All appliances are GE Monogram series. UP AND DOWN There are four ways to traverse the levels, including an elevator and three staircases. “We’re very practical. With the living space upstairs, the elevator makes the house more accessible to everyone,” Linda says. Right now, it comes in handy when juggling the baby and armfuls of groceries. The master bedroom and the nursery complete the upper floor. The master stays neat largely because of that retro built-in laundry chute. It’s undeniably playful to toss clothes down (two points!) into the laundry room below. The rejuvenating “soaking tub,” with stainless steel fixtures inspires bubble-bath longings. The Mont Blanc marble tiles in herringbone and hexagon designs on the floors, vanity and shower were inspired by the white marble at Flagler College (the former Ponce de Leon Hotel). Downstairs, find the laundry room, two guest bedrooms, a guest bath, a surfboard closet and the two-car-onestroller garage. “We love the way the house turned out. We’re so happy,” Linda says. And why not? This is where William will always think of as “home.”

2THE LOCAL VENDORS
"I constantly tell brides that St. Augustine has some of the best wedding vendors you could ever work with and that statement could not be more true! Because we are such a small town the wedding vendors are all like one big, happy, hardworking family. It’s truly unique in the fact that we support each other and really create an environment where only the best is accepted. You can be assured that if another vendor recommends someone local they are going to be amazing and that they are going to hold each other accountable for the quality of their work. At the end of the day, we don’t just work together, a lot of us are friends, we love what we do and we love the relationships with our fellow vendors and that shows in our work and product!" 3 TROLLEY TRANSPORTATION
"Use a trolley for transportation after the ceremony! Although St. Augustine is small and totally walkable — I have found that transportation makes things much easier to get shots at multiple locations around the city. Best case scenario? Finish up family portraits and have trolley driver pick you
and your bridal party up for a 30-45 minute cruise during cocktail hour. It’s an awesome way to see the city and stop at two or three locations without all of the walking. More variation in your photos as well!" Sarah Annay, Photographer Sarah Annay Photography
WATERCOLORS BY LIZ 4 For grooms, parents, or other guests who want to give a personalized gift to the bride, look no further than local watercolorist Liz Ligeti of Watercolors by Liz. While portraits of the bride's dress, shoes, and bouquet are the most popoular commissions, Liz will illustrate any meaningful wedding day detail the bride holds special. The process starts with sharing inspiration photos with Liz – from there, her creativity takes the lead. Already tied the knot? Illustrations are just as meaningful as anniversary gifts! Bouquet illustrations range from $120 (5"x7") to $185 (11"x14"). Custom gown paintings are available as 8"x10" for $180 or 11"x14" for $220.

i SAYING 'I DO' ABOARD THE SCHOONER FREEDOM Set sail and host a wedding your guests are sure to never forget. By Remee LaChance In the age of Pinterest, creating a genuine and unique wedding is difficult. For those looking for a fresh take on 'I do,' consider boarding The Schooner Freedom. This tall ship sailboat molds to any style wedding you wish to have – casual to formal, whatever you choose. Guests are sure to remember your day out of the countless weddings they've attended. Set sail for at least one hour (but no more than four), during the any time of day – sunrise to sunset. While the sailboat easily lends itself to an intimate elopement, the vessel is able to accomodate up to 40 guests. The Schooner Freedom provides complimentary water, soft drinks, wine, and beer and their sound system for the special occasion. Other vendors (like officiants, photographers, musicians and caterers) must be otherwise sourced. Walk the dock during your processional for a breath-taking entrance, begin your ceremony after you've set sail and celebrate with cocktails immediately following before returning for a full reception on the mainland. 111 Avenida Menendez www.schoonerfreedom.com

Their property is always a dream to work at. It is a beautiful, well-run venue that has great parking and a highly professional staff who are always very accommodating. "For brides planning an engagement session in St. Augustine, always work with your photographer to think outside the box! St. Augustine is filled with many great locations but you always want to make sure your shoot represents you and your fiancè as a couple. z VENDORS WITH HELPFUL INSIGHT "My advice to St. Augustine brides would be to give yourself as much time to plan as possible. Early planning allows you to reach out to your vendors with as much advance notice as possible. There are a lot of amazing wedding vendors in our beautiful city all with very unique styles and in order to ensure that they will be able to be a part of your big day it is so important to start inquiring and planning with them early. You can never plan too far in advance!" Bailey Rowland, Dessert Shop Owner Crème de la Cocoa
x LOCATIONS WITH MEANING
"If I had to name my favorite location to shoot in St. Augustine, it'd have to be the Mission of Nombre De Dios – it has everything. There's so much architectural interest, history, and lush greenery... not to mention a wide open field, a bridge and gorgeous sunsets over the water." Rob Futrell, Photographer Photos by Rob Futrell
c WEDDING PLANNERS
"One of the best pieces of advice for a couple getting married in St Augustine is to make sure you have a local wedding planner! With the many moving parts of a wedding, a planner that knows the city and the venues is the best thing to relieve stress. Also, when you're thinking of how the wedding day will go, allow time in the timeline for traffic and parking; especially if traveling over the Bridge of Lions or parking in the historic part of town. Another practical piece of advice is to grab a pair of flats or sandals for walking through the city for pictures. Sore feet will not be fun for anyone." The sunlight streaming from across the intracoastal and in through the grand windows will illuminate your 'I do’s' and give them an utterly enviable enchantment. Mission of Nombre De Dios & La Leche Shrine St. Augustine Catholics are already familiar with the Diocese's Cathedral Basilica and sister parishes near the downtown area (San Sebastian and St. Benedict the Moor) – but it might come as a surprise to some that the Mission is another location option for a sacramental marriage ceremony. Ceremonies at the Mission must be arranged through the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine. Not Catholic? While you can't marry on the grounds, you can take as many pictures as your heart desires – be sure to visit the water's edge for stunning sunset portraits. www.missionandshrine.org

By Meeka Anne | Photography by Brian Miller Kathleen has been a licensed mental health counselor for nearly 35 years. Many of her clients reach out to her because of her faithbased counseling, which offers a specific style of comfort to those seeking to understand themselves better. “We’re all seeking a sense of purpose, a sense of identity and a sense of security and helping people to find that is a beautiful mission,” she said. Her philosophy is that transformation begins with a renewing of the mind. She has specific questions that enable her to get a grasp on a person’s perspective. She uses this information to guide patients to an understanding of how powerful the mind is. The only downside of her job is sitting all day. To offset that, when she’s not at work, she walks the beach searching for driftwood. To nourish her creative side, she creates wall hangings and votive candle holders from her treasures. Kathleen enjoys yoga and participating in mud runs and obstacle courses. She said, “Obstacle courses are the perfect metaphor for life. You don’t know what’s next, you don’t know what the obstacle will be, and sometimes you find you need help getting over a wall.” Life Source Group in St. Augustine is offering free group counseling to those in need post Hurricane Matthew. SOPHIE OGNJENOVIC When dance classes weren't a fit anymore, local teen Sophie Ognjenovic opted to try a demanding performance art of another kind – aerial. By Amanda LaConte | Photography by Brian Miller
I
f you’ve ever witnessed an aerial arts performance, you’ve experienced the thrill of it from a spectator’s perspective. Aerial dancing is an exciting sport and a prominent phenomenon locally, as St. Augustine has its very own aerial athletics studio which frequently performs at local events. If you’ve seen one of them, you may have seen young Sophie Ognjenovic perform. Sophie is only a freshman in high school but is already making a name for herself as an incredibly talented aerial athlete here in St. Augustine. Laura Atkins, one of Sophie’s coaches and owner of Aerial Athlete, says it is rare to see the self-motivation in teens that Sophie exemplifies. “She is hard working and enjoys tackling challenges. She is a positive and strong (mentally and physically) role model to our younger aerialists.” So what exactly is aerial dancing? It’s a subgenre of modern dance that incorporates an apparatus attached to the ceiling or overhead, often an aerial silk or trapeze. It’s an extremely demanding sport that requires significant strength, flexibility, and – unsurprisingly – courage to master. The sport has been around in the US since the 1970s, but was perhaps most famously brought to the mainstream’s attention by Cirque du Soleil. Aerial dance is characterized by creative choreography and fluid movements. Aerial silk athletes, like Sophie, climb, twist, drop, spin, and contort themselves on fabric aerial silks that hang from overhead. The visual effect is breathtaking and often nerve-wracking, but always stunning! Sophie started the aerial arts three years ago, when she attended a summer camp
66
at Orlando Circus School. At the camp, she was able to try various techniques including trampoline, static trapeze, and aerial arts. Soon after her discovery of aerial, she decided to take a break from her lifelong study of dance to start taking classes at Aerial Athlete in St. Augustine, where she has thrived in just a few short years. Sophie is attracted to the distinctive nature of the sport. “I love that I can express myself in a unique way. I have been taking ballet since I was four and aerial dance is the perfect mixture of strength and grace. It also incorporates choreography and performance aspects, which I love.” Sophie’s success in aerial arts comes from a mix of raw talent, supportive coaching, positive attitude, and a very healthy dose of work ethic. In addition to the hours she spends training, Sophie is in the incredibly rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) academic program at her high school. www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com
All considered, she considers herself a pretty typical teenager. “There are times when I miss out on things because I have a rehearsal or performance but I think if you want to be good at anything, discipline and sacrifice are part of the package,” says Sophie. Academically, Sophie enjoys research, problem solving and projectbased work. Currently, her favorite subject is math. Outside of school and sports, Sophie loves to travel! Her dad is from Croatia and the family frequently travels to Europe to visit family. Her favorite part of traveling? “I really enjoy learning about other cultures and experiencing different ways of life.” While Sophie’s first priority now is her schooling, she would love to someday perform professionally for Cirque de Soleil and eventually become an aerial dance coach. 1701 Lakeside Avenue, Unit 1 www.aerialathlete.com

though it isn't quite a free thing, we have to mention the Flagler College tour! Though not free, it's well worth the $10 or less. It's a history lesson and an architectural feast. We haven't taken the kids yet, but we will soon! The kids, though, both still love Ron Parker Park for an hour of free fun.
If we're not at home, we're usually... grabbing Kookaburra coffee on our way to run the kids to school, activities, and then to work. Alison's days start at DRiV and Aaron usually ends his work day there to workout, coach, or just connect with our gym family.

JEAN-SEBASTIEN GROS Both working to bring the community healthy, local produce and playing host to an unlikey animal family, this picturesque Elkton farm is a true passion project. By Alexter Albury | Photography by Rob Futrell

estled in Elkton among neighboring potato fields, cabbage fields, pastures, and long-standing barns is the farm market known as Rype & Readi. Jean-Sebastien Gros’ 22 acre farm greets visitors with open fields, fenced in livestock, and other expected visuals of the country. But the unexpected is not far from the senses as guests soon realize as they approach the market. Pumpkins and squash with varied hues and shapes immediately catch one’s eye. Their twisted, flattened, and knotted bodies resemble a still life master piece of an abstract painter. Unusual colors and patterns of vegetables unseen in the air-conditioned aisles of big name grocery stores are common fare in the open-air display just outside the door of Rype & Readi. The fresh and unique

varieties of goods available at this market is what gives Jean-Sebastien great pride as his vision is realized. “We try to focus on presenting products that are fresh, seasonal, and definitely local. There are some things here from our farm, but we’ve also developed a great network of relationships with other farms in this area, even regionally,” explains JeanSebastien. Along with his business partner Dr. Ripp Smith, Jean-Sebastien works to not only provide the community with fresh and healthy produce, but to also introduce local farmers and their goods to the surrounding area. This is a passion that both JeanSebastien and Ripp share and cultivate with their daughters, who also work at the market. “We call it a legacy project about health and wellness that we share with our daughters and the communities that we serve,” says Jean-Sebastien. Rype & Readi provides the normal goods associated with farm markets along with its varieties of fruits, vegetables, and herbs, but the market takes things a step further. It also introduces special or little-known foods that captures both the imagination www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com
and taste buds. One such sweet product is the Pink Pearl apple. The outside of this apple is golden-yellow and red, but a bite of this succulent, rare treat reveals its pink to purplish delicious flesh. One of the market’s top selling items is Honey Crystals. Jean-Sebastien says, “There is one plant in the whole United States that makes this! It’s honey without the stickiness. It's crystallized, dehydrated honey. It’s a sugar substitute that’s better for you.” The little, tan, crunchy granules pack big flavor that can be enjoyed on its own or as an addition to coffee, tea, other drinks, or food. “We’re always trying to offer any kind of natural substitute for refined sugar,” adds Jean-Sebastien. Jean-Sebastien also imports some of his items from other farms outside of the country. Aromatic and floral teas such as Japanese Cherry Rose are brought in from an English supplier that has been making special and impeccable teas for over one-hundred and fifty years. However, like many local farms, Jean-Sebastien’ foreign partners also have trouble bringing their produce to the public. This is where Jean-
If you have kids, or you’re a big kid yourself, Rype & Readi makes for a fun morning outing while you get to check some grocery shopping off your list (they have some of the best produce in town, really!). We recommend grabbing a snack and a bag of animal feed before heading on out to make some new furry friends. Be sure to make note of all the animals' names by checking out the red barn on your way in!
"WE CALL THE MARKET A LEGACY PROJECT ABOUT HEALTH AND WELLNESS THAT WE SHARE WITH OUR DAUGHTERS AND THE COMMUNITIES THAT WE SERVE." Sebastien strongly believes in his desire to deliver the goods of small farms to the local public. “That’s what our relationship with other farms is all about, trying to help them capture some of that margin that is swallowed up by big merchandisers,” Jean-Sebastien says. By adding a variety of products from different farms, he believes that the healthy goods will highlight each other. “All of these ingredients are compliments to the local ingredients.”
chickens, geese, sheep, goats, donkeys, and cows. With so much space and such tranquil scenery, Jean-Sebastien also encourages people to explore the possibilities of having other public and private events on the farm. “It’s such a cool place,” Jean-Sebastien says. “There’s so much room. I’d like to see live bands here with people relaxing to nice music and socializing. There’s just a lot of possibilities for the community to share with one another here.”
In addition to offering quality foods and ingredients, Jean-Sebastien also makes use of his farm's 22 acres by providing customers with a place to experience touching and harvesting farm goods. “In the summer people can pick sunflowers, Snap Dragons in the winter, and Gladiolus on Mother’s Day,” explains Jean-Sebastien. The farm also gives visitors a chance to pet and feed its
The fine selection of fresh dairy products, aromatic teas, balsamic vinegar, nuts, fruits, and vegetables is due to the hard work and partnerships of Jean-Sebastien. His continuation of building friendships and connections with local and regional farmers pushes Rype & Readi well beyond the country roads of rural Elkton. Just as his market has expanded to provide dining at

the St. Johns Golf Club, Jean-Sebastien also sets his sights on stationing other Rype & Readi locations around the city. He says, “We want to provide the community with the best and freshest ingredients. We want to share the many goods provided by our associated farmers with the city. I’d really like to see us with markets in different parts of town. Places downtown and the beach would be great!” Jean-Sebastien Gros and Rype & Readi Farm Market are determined to continue to provide the community with healthy, fresh, and desirable food that not only celebrates the talent and skill of local producers but also encourages partnerships and family. 5780 County Road 305, Elkton www.rypeandreadi.com

JEANETTA SALYER Jeanetta Salyer, of the local Ramona Quimby Band, set out to make a change following the devistation of Hurricane Matthew. By Katherine Kennedy | Photography by Rob Futrell

sk anyone who has spent any amount of time in St. Augustine – the town has a certain charm about it. It could be due to its local food, historic streets, or beautiful beaches. But it’s more likely due the people who live here – thousands of residents who uphold the characteristic charm St. Augustine has become famous for. When Hurricane Matthew hit, it didn’t just hit a town of nine to fivers; it hit a town of restaurant owners, musicians, craft bartenders, artists, and fishermen. These unique people, to no surprise at all, have come together posthurricane in an effort to help one another rebuild their livelihoods. They gave what they could – their time, their money, their food, and their talents to ensure that St. Augustine would stay the charming town everyone knows and loves. After the hurricane, Salyer had about $10,000 in equipment damages, and lost about $1,700 in working income due to restaurants being closed. She quickly realized that she was one of many full-
72
time working musicians whose livelihoods were put on hold after the hurricane, and decided to put her time and energy into helping those who were affected. She started a Go Fund Me page, and also gave many musicians resources to help turn their bands into an LLC, claim their equipment, and file economic injury with the State of Florida. After weeks of planning and hard work, Salyer put on Sing Out for St. Augustine, a benefit concert aimed at helping local, full-time musicians who were affected by Hurricane Matthew. The concert was held at the St. Augustine Amphitheater, and was the perfect medium for people looking to relax and let go after the hurricane. Seven bands volunteered their time and talents to help those affected by Hurricane Matthew, including Lu Rubino, Musical Charis, Amy Hendrickson & Chelsea Saddler, John Bailey, Trio of Boom, Papercutt, and Ramona Quimby. There were five local food trucks on site, beer from Cigar City Brewing, and a raffle box with prizes ranging from concert tickets to gift cards to local www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com
restaurants. An estimated 1,400 people attended the event. Between the event and the Go Fund Me page, Salyer was able to raise about $10,000 that will be divided and distributed to 14 various full-time musicians. The beneficiaries consist of people from Jacksonville all the way down to Flagler Beach, but most of them make up the downtown St. Augustine community. The event was successful largely because of Sayler’s obvious passion for her town and her fellow musicians. “Our economy in St. Augustine is very unusual because it is service industry based, and entertainment based, and tourist based; it relies on the human condition to help one another. Everybody loves the performing arts, and everybody loves being able to eat at all these amazing restaurants, and everybody loves craft cocktails. All these things take love, effort, and craftsmanship to really execute well. It’s what makes our town so awesome and amazing.” www.ramonaquimbymusic.com

DEVA PARNELL 17-year St. Augustine resident, Deva Parnell lived in an ashram for 12 years, was trained by yoga masters, and owns Discovery Yoga, the first Yoga Alliance registered school in Florida. By Meaghan Alvarado | Photography by Brian Miller
G
rounded, calm, balanced, and self-assured, these are a few of the qualities that radiate from long-time yoga teacher and local business owner Deva Parnell of Discovery Yoga. Her journey into yoga began in 1971 when she was visiting a friend in Philadelphia and read a magazine article where Jane Fonda described how yoga brought her inner peace. She consulted the local yellow pages for “yoga” and found Kripalu Ashram in Sumneytown, Pennsylvania. They charged ten dollars for room and board, including two daily yoga practices. Deva spent her time at the ashram immersing herself in yoga. She spent hours in the on-site library absorbing ancient yogic texts like The Bhagavad Gita and practicing twice a day. The owner of the ashram, Amrit Desai is one of the few living yoga masters who introduced yoga to the Western world in the 1960s. After her introduction to yoga, Deva moved to Pensacola where she would ultimately land her first teaching gig. Before the culmination of her yoga teaching career, Deva worked as a sales rep for a paper company and a graphic designer for ad agencies. A Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
74
from the University of South Florida and her expertise in darkroom photography helped Deva secure her first advertising job where her boss taught her graphic design. Upon mastering her graphic design skills, Deva rented an office in downtown Pensacola and started her own business, Graphitti Design and Production. While working as a graphic designer, Deva continued her yoga practice. Not yet trained as a teacher, Deva’s yoga teacher suggested that Deva was the best person to take her position when she retired. In 1979 she made the investment in getting certified and attended Kripalu Retreat in Summit Station, Pennsylvania for her basic and advanced yoga teacher training. Four years after completing her training, Deva closed shop on her graphic design business and made the move to Kripalu Retreat. Only there a few short months, Deva and other residents helped to relocate the Kripalu Retreat to Stockbridge, Massachusetts which is today’s Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health. Deva spent twelve years living at the Kripalu Center. While there she used her organizational skills to help develop the yoga teacher training curriculum and trained over 2,000 yoga teachers. She compared the process www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com
to completing crossword puzzles. In 1993 Deva took her first adventure to India with a group from the Kripalu Center. Over the next two years, she spent a total of four months immersed in yoga and the local culture. She experienced ceremonies of light (Arati) which included chanting mantras and ringing bells. They received training in hatha yoga and explored ancient temples honoring Durga, Kali, and Gayatri. Deva’s teaching was significantly affected by the asana (or yoga posture) examination at the end of their yoga training. The trainees were judged by an Indian teacher, and everyone failed without any feedback. This spurred Deva to include an all-day review session in Discovery Yoga’s teacher training where their fellow students provide feedback. During her time at Kripalu, Deva met her husband Hugh White, another resident. The two moved to St. Augustine to be closer to family in 1999. She taught yoga to small groups on Vilano Beach, at community centers, and even in the upstairs area of The Reef Restaurant. In 2001, Deva opened a small two room studio across the street from Butterfield Garage on King Street. She quickly outgrew the space and bought the

Deva fosters the bonding process through introductions on day one, and by the second day, the group has already formed friendships. This group bonding provides a compassionate and supportive environment in which to learn how to teach yoga. Graduates of Discovery Yoga’s teacher training program leave with lifelong friends. “I love teaching yoga because it’s a similar process [each time] and working with different people keeps me present,” Deva beamed. She thinks of teaching as a meditation, applying her analytical www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com
mind, intuition, and staying focused on her students’ needs. Between Kripalu Center and Discovery Yoga Deva has trained over 2,600 yoga teachers. When she’s not teaching yoga or training instructors, her family, gardening, walking on the beach and coming up with new creations in the kitchen keeps her occupied. She has a binder of recipes she is constantly tweaking and improving upon that includes everything from salad dressings to chicken sausage. A proud wife, mother, and grandmother, Deva Parnell leaves a lasting impression of unity and love on everyone who crosses her path. 3 Davis Street www.discoveryyoga.com

LUCI BUTLER At a time when most people are still settling into a first career, St. Augustine's Lucinda Butler has been down that path and back again and taken a somewhat different musical path than most. And she’s loving her life right now. By Steve Parr | Photography by Rob Futrell
O
riginally from Savannah, Georgia, Luci moved to New York City to work as a music therapist after graduating from the University of Georgia with a double major in psychology and music therapy. While in New York, she worked at Beth Abraham Health Services in the Bronx. At this point, music therapy was her career, and the thought of being a touring musician never crossed her mind. It was during her time in New York, however, when her performing career began to flourish. Luci met the musician Moby, probably best known for the "Bourne Identity" theme "Extreme Ways," when he joined the Board of Directors of the music therapy organization at Beth Abraham. At the ripe old age of 26 she embarked on a world tour with Moby, remaining with the band for a year and a half, but would often join the band for shows here and there. She also recorded the album "Last
76
Night" with the band. "I never planned on being a touring musician. But the first time I stood on stage... I knew that was what I was supposed to do. I'd always been a creator. That's what I loved about music therapy. I could create this whole world of rehabilitation. Now I was delivering the message." After her time with Moby, Luci's path was clear. She enjoyed the energy of life on the road. In 2006, she had the opportunity to join the venerable and renowned Trans Siberian Orchestra. She would remain with them for the following seven years. Luci considers herself more of musician than a keyboard player. She began formal training at age four, but Luci says her mother and grandmother insist that she was playing recognizable songs on her Fisher-Price xylophone at the age of two. It took some time for them to find someone to teach her at such a young age. While she cites no one person as an inspiration, she's quick to mention that she would take a www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com
piece like "Light My Fire" by The Doors and memorize, note for note, the opening organ solo. But, if she had to pick a particular influence, it would be The Beatles "Abbey Road" album, which her parents would play for her as an infant when she couldn't sleep. Because of that album Luci says "I love melody and beauty and expression. I've never become totally obsessed with blowing people's brains out with my keyboard skills. Although, growing up in piano lessons I would only learn giant and impressive pieces by my favorite romantic composers like Brahms, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. It was during her time with Trans-Siberian Orchestra that she fell in love with St. Augustine and quickly decided this is where she needed to be. She knew no one when she moved here. She only knew she was home. She had come to St. Augustine to, as she puts it, "heal from Manhattan" and to sort of isolate herself. After preparing herself emotionally for a full year, she made
Combining the healing powers of music and science, Luci thrives in engaging a group of residents at Bayview Healthcare. She uses creativity (on-the-spot song writing), movements (full body deep breathing), and memory access (remembering song lyrics) to create a beneficial session.
"THAT'S WHAT I LOVED ABOUT MUSIC THERAPY. I COULD CREATE THIS WHOLE WORLD OF REHABILITATION. NOW I WAS DELIVERING THE MESSAGE." the decision to leave Trans-Siberian Orchestra to devote herself to uncovering and creating the music she wanted to share with the world.
and get to perform with him on stage, 10 feet in front of me, was amazing."
When asked what her most memorable gig has been, the answers (she has two) come easy. With Moby, it was the Splendor In The Grass Festival in Australia, playing to 80,000 people. The single "Lift Me Up" was on the charts there. “The audience; all 80,000 of them, started jumping up and down in synchronicity. It was breathtaking to see so many people synchronized by music like that.
Locally, Luci has again become excited about doing more work in the music therapy field. While she hasn't yet hung out her shingle, she's worked with Bayview Healthcare and, most recently, Buckingham Smith Assisted Living Facility. At Bayview, she's proud that the groups she's worked with, which were once eight to ten people, now number 15-20. The doubling in size of the groups, she says, is indicative of how effective music therapy is.
For Trans-Siberian Orchestra, "We were playing shows at the Meadowlands and the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith was our guest for those shows. I don't have that moment with too many celebrities, but to see him and hear him
The excitement she felt when she first became involved in the field hasn't waned an iota, and that's evident when she talks about why she loves it so much: "Music enters the brain in many different areas. If you look at MRI scans of the brain while music is playing www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com
it's not only the auditory area that lights up. It's the motor area, the speech area, the memory area, the emotion/mood area, the cognition area, and many others relative to each person and his or her relationship to the music. Studies in neuroplasticity confirm the brain creates new neural pathways to repair itself, and music therapy can directly guide this process." Luci is currently in the studio recording the first album of her original music project "Light Elixir," but she also has her eyes back on the road and getting back to touring at some point in the future. It'll be interesting to see how long she lets herself stay out there. www.lucindaannebutler.com

COMBO SALAD Photography by Ed Taylor
Eats
Don’t let its simple name fool you, the Combo Salad from Manatee Cafe packs a serious punch. The hearty vegetarian dish starts with a bed of mixed greens, then goes a little crazy. The greens are covered with all manner of delicious veggies – tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots – and garnished with your choice of pita, chips, or wheat. The already substantial display is then topped with hummus and tofu and finally tabouli, a Middle Eastern dish of parsley, mint, bulgar, and onion. And if that weren’t enough, add some sprouts and your favorite dressing. You’ll hardly remember it’s a salad. 525 FL State Road 16 #106 www.manateecafe.com

lanted across from the public parking lot on 11th Street, Cafe Eleven is a 15-year fixture in St. Augustine Beach. The restaurant and concert venue is housed in what was once a convenience store. The rustic yet modern interior is accented with aluminum stools, distressed wood, and Edison bulbs hanging behind the bar. Today the location draws a combination of locals and tourists with a menu of fresh foods and live music instead of Slim Jims and cartons of milk. Boasting a full vegetarian menu with eight sandwich choices and a slew of salads, Cafe Eleven is a favorite among many local herbivores. Many non-vegetarians are attracted to the restaurant for their comfort foods. They also have a gluten free menu for even the strictest of diets. On the weekends you’ll find a full brunch buffet with options for both vegetarians and meat eaters. Due to their popularity, many of the available dishes are from the original menu. The local favorite is the Avocado Melt. This decadent sandwich can make a vegetarian out of a meat eater with its sliced avocado, fresh tomatoes,

roasted red peppers, green goddess dressing, and mozzarella cheese on focaccia bread. In addition to their vegetarian menu, any sandwich can be made vegetarian by swapping in marinated tempeh for a buck. Another staple item amidst the favorites of locals is their acai bowl topped with bananas. Or, order it as a smoothie for a quick snack on the go. They also offer other frozen concoctions like the Peach Synthesis or the Green Pina Colada, a play on the well-known pina colada with a boost of fresh spinach. A sneaky way to be sure you’re getting your daily veggies. Cafe Eleven is open daily from 7am-9pm for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Their half price happy hour is every day from 3-7pm. Order their warm pretzel bread and beer cheese sauce for the perfect munchy to have with your afternoon brew. If you’re feeling social grab a seat at the bar and make your selection from a lineup of craft beers on tap. Or bring your furry friend and dine outside on their pet-friendly patio. 501 A1A Beach Boulevard www.originalcafe11.com

JEFF HOLLERAN With a cornucopia of healthy options featuring locally sourced ingredients, plus a well-planned beer and wine program, the ever-evolving Ripe Bistro and Social Lounge is just the latest feather in Jeff Holleran’s entrepreneurial cap. By Matthew Shaw | Photography by Brian Miller
I
t’s 3pm on a Wednesday afternoon and Jeff Holleran is taking advantage of his first opportunity of the day to simmer. After one of his servers called in sick, the well-known St. Augustine entrepreneur and jack-of-all trades was doing double, make that triple, duty during today’s lunch shift at his Anastasia islandbased farm-to-table style restaurant Ripe Bistro and Social Lounge – hosting, waiting a few tables, and yes, even cooking. True to his nature the laidback father of three who spends much of his free time surfing, paddle boarding, or playing paddle tennis takes it all in stride. A veteran of St. Augustine’s food and beverage scene – having opened and sold several restaurants including Sangria’s on St. George Street and Spy Sushi on Hypolita – this is not Jeff’s first rodeo, so to speak. “I learned a long time ago that you have to be prepared if someone doesn’t show,” he says. Ripe is the first of Jeff’s businesses where he’s endeavored to do the cooking. “It gets a little hectic, but you just have to be ready to do whatever,” he says, nonchalantly.
90
Ripe’s gone through some renovations and menu changes since opening in 2011, but through it all it has maintained a reputation for serving simple, well-crafted dishes made from fresh, locally-sourced (when available) ingredients in a plush, yet welcoming environment. “The philosophy is pretty casual,” Jeff says of Ripe. “Come drink, share some plates, hangout, and if you’re hungry, we have really delicious meals.” Ripe’s lunch menu incorporates a variety of healthy options like smoothies, juices, salads, and sandwiches – including the wildly popular house-made free-range chicken salad made with almonds, cranberries, apples, and organic apple cider vinegar. But the dinner menu is where Jeff’s creativity shines. He serves a delicious and well-marbled Flat Iron steak, using nonhormone treated meat he buys from the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Seminole Pride Beef out of Ocala. “I use Flat Iron because it has the marbling of a Rib eye with the tenderness of a filet,” www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com
Jeff says. “You get the best of both worlds and the whole 8 oz. steak is edible – no bone, no grizzle.” Another popular dinner item is the Hawaiian Poke bowl, which Jeff prepares using raw, center cut Hawaiian Ahi tuna, spinach, brown rice, cucumbers, carrots, and avocado. He places all of these ingredients in a bowl and covers the dish with his house made poke sauce which he creates using Bragg’s liquid aminos, organic blue agave nectar, Sriracha, coconut oil, sesame oil, fresh garlic, cracked pepper, and freshly squeezed lemon and lime juice. These signature dishes only serve to compliment what is an atmosphere that became even more conducive to socializing when Jeff extended the bar area and added several high top tables a few months ago. Now on any given Friday or Saturday night, groups of locals gather at the high tops to indulge in craft beers from Ripe’s selection of more than 30 (plus six rotating taps) or wines by the bottle or glass from a selection that includes many small
Jeff, who has proven over the years that he’s not one to rest on his laurels, says he’ll continue to tweak Ripe’s atmosphere until he gets it just right. If only to prove that “rest” is not something found in his entrepreneurial playbook, with the lunchtime rush over and dinner service preparations looming, Jeff moves quickly from the kitchen to Ripe’s back patio where a trio of brand new ping pong tables have arrived. While “Ping Pong Bistro” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, the tables are just a few new pieces to what Holleran perpetually sees as a puzzle full of vacancies.
>>
boutique wines, as well as several organic and sulfite free options. The drinks tend to go down easier with cornucopia of small plates from Ripe’s tapas menu, which includes a rotating selection of meats, cheeses, olive trays, pesto spreads, and a delicious black bean hummus. While St. Augustine’s downtown dining and drinking scene has grown in popularity over the past half decade – adding new restaurants and bars with an alacrity previously unseen in the city’s long history – more and more establishments are beginning to pop up across Bridge of Lions. To Jeff’s credit, Ripe was ahead of the curve when it opened off A1A in Anastasia Plaza. “I’ve always had my eye out for trends and ways to fill voids in [St. Augustine],” Jeff says. “My early success gave me the confidence to just go for it.” Raised in coastal New Jersey, Jeff first came to St. Augustine after transferring from a small private college in Vermont to Flagler College in order study communications and business. “I knew early on that I wanted to be an entrepreneur,” he says. He used a $5,000 loan from his
grandmother to open Stogie’s Cigar Bar, which in its Charlotte Street location remains popular today with tourists and locals, alike. “I’d been spending time in Vermont and places like Charleston where farm-to-table was becoming a thing,” Jeff says of the path that led to the launch of Ripe. “I’ve always looked up to Vermont brands like Ben & Jerry’s [Ice Cream] and Magic Hat [craft brewery]. These are brands that were, early on, buying from local farmers and trying to business that was smart and sustainable.” Providing a quality wine bar and restaurant for the island was the easy part of the equation. The farm-to-table piece proved to be more of a challenge. “The elements are tough,” he says. “We get really hot summers here so things aren’t always available. Some items are hard to find or prohibitively expensive. And with limited resources I don’t have the ability to change my menu as often as I’d like.” That being said, local farmers, fishermen, www.STAUGUSTINESOCIAL.com
and purveyors are prevalent on Ripe’s menu, which does include specials that are revised daily. Jeff gets Ripe’s fresh seafood catch daily from Seafood Shoppe on Riberia; micro-greens and herbs from Palatka’s Urban Greens; kale, mustard greens and spinach from the local farmers market; and even Kombucha from St. Augustine-based Local Booch. After more than two decades creating unique dining experiences in St. Augustine, Jeff is still echoing the sentiments that kept him here in the first place. “This city is really a land of opportunity,” he says. “And it just keeps getting better.”

MARTIN TUMMINO Martin Tummino spent nearly a half-decade perfecting the cocktail recipes of the Latin world. Now he’s lending his expertise to downtown St. Augustine’s newest craft cocktail establishment. By Matthew Shaw | Photography by Rob Futrell When St. Augustine cocktail-preneur Cesar Diaz – the brains behind the bar program at the wildly popular Ice Plant as well as the upscale watering hole Oddbirds – needed to someone to manage the day-to-day at the newest addition to his fast-growing empire, the charismatic Venezuelan knew just the guy. Some months ago, Diaz had recruited the Argentina-born Martin Tummino to work at the then-newly established Oddbirds. Indeed Martin, who spent the previous six years traveling and tending bar across the western hemisphere, from Brazil to Venezuela to Miami, shares more with Diaz than just South American heritage. “Cesar and I are passionate about everything we do,” says Martin of his friend and boss, whom he met in Miami. “We believe that it’s not just about the cocktail, it’s about the experience and atmosphere. Read the rest of Martin's And we try to transmit that passion.” Tummino was an easy choice to serve as the bar manager of Damiana Elixirs and Love Potions, which opened on the corner of Cuma and Avenida Mendez in October. Named after a flower native to arid regions of Mexico, South America, and the Southwestern United States which is said to have aphrodisiacal powers, Damiana emphasizes drinks made with agave spirits – mezcal and tequila, in particular – and tropical concoctions crafted with Central and South American spirits like rum and pisco. Not just a drinking establishment, Damiana hosts salsa dancing, DJ nights, and other festivities designed to bolster its Latin-inspired ambience. “When you come to Damiana it’s like traveling a bit,” Martin says. “If you order

Despite his years of wanderlust, Tummino feels he’s found a home in St. Augustine, which he says reminds him of the small town in Argentina in which he grew up. “I’ve been in big cities, but at the same time I really loved being in small towns,” he says. “I like the people here, I like the weather and the beach. It’s kind of like an eternal summer, here. And now we have Damiana,” says Martin.

If you come to have a Mojito you will have it as Cubans do it. If you come to have a mamajuana you’ll have it the way Dominicans drink it.” “My goal was to get to know what people drink in different countries – get a feel for different foods and drinks, work with different cultures,” Martin says of his travels. “Now I can say I know the people. I know the spirits and the ingredients. And I apply that authenticity to what we do.”
of the equation, creativity, is perhaps just as evident. Innovation reins at Damiana, as traditional cocktail recipes are reimagined and reconfigured, emerging as what Martin describes as “elibations” (Elevation + libation = elibation, got it?). When it comes to Damiana’s Mezcal Sazerac, for example, the only thing recognizable is the rock glass in which the drink is served, as Martin foregoes the whiskey, choosing Mezcal instead, before adding spiced bitters, agave nectar, and replacing the traditional absinthe with a Mexican liqueur made from rum and fermented honey called xtabentún.
While both passion and authenticity play a role Damiana’s philosophy, a third part

PRESERVED Really special occasions often occur at really exceptional restaurants. When such an occasion occurs, be glad that St. Augustine has Preserved Restaurant, which specializes in refined southern cuisine. estled in the historic Lincolnville neighborhood, the house which is Preserved Restaurant was built between 1865 and 1885, making it one of the oldest structures in the area. The launch of the restaurant in early 2016 brought to the area an elegant level of dining that’s not easy to find. The lineage of fine dining is readily evident here at Preserved and it's expressed throughout the menu. This is southern dining at its finest. To start this dining experience, it's important to consider that the appetizers are sizeable. At only $12, the compressed pork belly, served atop kim chi collard greens and a sweet potato puree, is sure to satisfy the most finicky of bacon fans. The pork belly is expertly prepared while

the sweet potato puree could almost be a dessert dish. If the sweet taste of pork isn't what you're looking for, for $15 you might opt for the cheese and house charcuterie board, which features a rillettes spread, which is made from beef short ribs, pickled okra and white asparagus, a cranberry/ apple jelly, duck prosciutto, bleu cheese from Georgia and goat cheese from South Carolina. On its own, this is an entree for even a mildly hardy appetite. Other appetizers include Prince Edward Island mussels, shrimp cocktail and oysters. A variety of salads are available for $9. After your appetizer, settle in with your entree of choice. At $28, the locally caught fish is light and flavorful, without tasting "fishy." It's all nestled in a bed of congaree and penn rice middlins, all on top of a delicious crawfish etoufee. Plan on taking
Owner and executive chef Brian Whittington brings a long history of culinary expertise to Preserved. Along with his tenure as Executive Chef at Orsay in Jacksonville, you might recognize him from the Cooking Channel’s show “Grill Iron.” His credibility for fine dining is sound. Constructed between 1865 and 1885, the building that houses Preserved Restaurant is one of the oldest buildings in Lincolnville.
