ATHLETICS AT OCCIDENTAL

A note from

shanda ness

occidental college athletic director

“To be an Oxy student-athlete is to challenge yourself and take pride in balancing both excelling in your sport and excelling in your academics, day in and day out. Being on the men’s soccer team has given me a family of teammates and coaches that constantly push and support me as I continue to grow as a student, as a soccer player, and as a young adult.”

“Students at Oxy strive for everyday excellence in the classroom, in the community and in competition. Being an Oxy Tiger means having the perseverance to pave your own path while being loyal to your teammates, your coaches and the College. “We hope that you’ll visit us on campus and decide for yourself if you’re ‘All in for Oxy.’”

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES WITHIN OXY ATHLETICS:

MEN’S SPORTS

SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) is a group of representatives from every team that aims to improve the student-athlete experience through collaborating with the administration, fostering a sense of community within the department, representing athletics on campus committees, and organizing community engagement opportunities. JEDI is a multi-layered initiative that focuses on the intersectionality of sports and one's thoughts, values and experiences in the areas of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Tiger ACTION (A Chance To Influence Our Now) is an opportunity for a select group of student-athletes to further develop their leadership skills through intentional programming and conversation led by members of the athletics staff.

“The student-athlete experience at Oxy is centered around our tight-knit community. The bond that is shared, not only among my team but with all the athletes, is unlike anything else. We want to see each other succeed not only on the field or the pool but in school and life. At any Oxy game, no matter the sport, you’ll find a group of fellow athletes in the stands cheering” ABIGAIL LAVOLD ’22 WATER POLO
