Before you is the 2017-2018 edition of the Occidental College yearbook, Déjà Vu. Suggesting a sense of familiarity in the unknown, we at La Encina believed the name to be appropriate in a time marked with transitions and expansions at Occidental and the world around it. While people may go and names may change, one can always expect to find the recognizable within the new, especially at Occidental. As the school’s yearbook, it isChristian Clark our duty to capture the events emotions Jackson Caudle, and Javion Tinsley, Casey Mornhinwegof the time, so that others may be able to look back in order to move forward. This book is a celebration of our history, both the one behind us as well as the one yet to come, to the Oxy of the future. So without further delay, we proudly present to you this year in review.

Library & CDLA The Mary Norton Clapp Library constitutes one of Occidental’s hallmark locations. Divided between its new and old wings, the library functions as a source of information for all students. In addition, the library hosts the Center for Digital Liberal Arts (CDLA), which provides educational support regarding technology and critical skills, and Special Collections. Whether students need sources for a paper or just a place to study, the library is always available to help.

Professors Professor Lisa Sousa
One of Oxy’s greatest strengths is its small class sizes, which provide an opportunity for students to form closeknit relationships with professors. As a result, for the most part students adore and love their professors, and have many opportunities to get to know them at office hours, through research, or by just chatting. We are lucky at Oxy to have such an intelligent, accomplished, and caring group of professors guiding us through our academic careers. 8

Oxy’s United Nations program allows students to have the special opportunity to devote a semester to an internship working at the UN. As the only program of its kind in the country, the curriculum includes internships in Washington D.C. and Costa Rica, as well as opportunities to work alongside current UN employees. Students who partake in the program gain relevant experience in the world of politics and come away with a newfound understanding of the intricacies of global affairs. Shawn Cremer

Study Abroad is a fundamental component of the Occidental experience for many students. Whether they’re conducting research in Chile, studying Renaissance art in Rome, or producing films in the Czech Republic, students can always find opportunities overseas to suit their needs and interests. Those who go often cite their time abroad as life-changing, and return to campus with a broadened perspective of the world they live in. 13

Occidental’s primary eatery is the Marketplace, or MP for short. Known for its diverse and ever-changing menu, the MP offers a wide selection of options to suit the needs of any student, including a plethora of organic and locally-sourced options. Favorites of the student body include the pasta bar, the sandwich station, and the self-serve waffle maker.

Occidental’s campus dining is rounded out by the Cooler, the Green Bean, and the Coffee Cart. Each covers a specific niche - the Cooler satisfies any and all needs for greasy and fast food, the student-run Green Bean is the go-to spot for all things caffeinated, and the Coffee Cart is perfect for grabbing a quick, late-night snack.

Greek life at Occidental can be a rewarding experience with opportunities for everyone. Consisting of eight organized groups, including a gender-neutral org and a multicultural sorority, there’s a group for everyone within Greek life. With commitment to philanthropy and service, orgs are known for working to better the local community and creating lifelong bonds between chapter members. Bell Young Hall
For many first years, Bell Young is a welcoming and pleasant first home at Oxy. Those who live in Bell Young praise it for its modern facilities, air conditioning, and relatively close location to academic buildings and Pauley Hall. At any given time, Bell Young residents can be found playing the piano, hanging out in the multiple well-kept common rooms, or discussing the legend of the “Oxy Tunnels, which there is supposedly an entrance to in Bell Young.

One of five first-year halls, Braun is home to three stories of singlegender floors. While its location on upper campus makes the walk to Braun a workout, the camaraderie between the residents and the view of Los Angeles make the commute well worth it. Students who live in Braun tend to stick together, and can often be found in groups at the Marketplace, the Library, or in their common room watching a movie.

Berkus is one of the most envied halls on campus. Its ornate architecture, arched entryways, and decorative plants in the expansive central courtyard lead many to compare it to a luxurious resort. With the coffee cart, Berkus gym, and numerous classrooms, labs, and study rooms, it seems that students could stay in Berkus forever.

Chilcott Hall
While it may be the smallest res hall on campus, Chilcott more than makes up for its size with its incredibly tight-knit community. Residents of Chilcott are known for their ability to brave the elements - the hall lacks air conditioning and for their incredibly welcoming demeanor. The expansive common room is excellent for social gatherings of all varieties, and its location on lower campus allows for enviable access to the Marketplace and the Cooler.

Nestled between rows of trees, Erdman is a hidden paradise to those who live there. The school’s current substance-free res hall, Erdman is adorned with classical furnishings and an extravagant and open common room that provides a quick escape from the hassles of daily life. With easy access to classes and dining, it can be easy for students to mistake the hall for a veritable hotel.

While other dorms may be sought after for amenities like air conditioning or big common rooms, none of that can compare to the fact that Obama lived in Haines during the two years he spent at Oxy. Haines is a comfortable hall with beautiful old-fashioned architecture and a prime location right near Johnson Hall and the Marketplace. To top it off, a shrine to Obama at the entrance of Haines with photos of him during his time at Oxy gives students a reminder of its most beloved and famed former resident.

Newcomb is home to three floors of co-ed upper division students. Its great location gives residents convenient access to the Cooler, Marketplace, Booth Hall, and the Office of Admissions. Newcomb is home to the Newcomb Media Suite, which houses The Weekly, CatAList TV, and, most notably, La Encina itself! Being the only res hall that offers students the option to live in selfrun “quads”, Norris maintains a special place in the hearts of many of its inhabitants. Homecoming Weekend was a busy weekend for all Tigers. Between Men’s and Women’s Soccer matches, Athletics’ Hall of Fame announcements, and Oswald’s very own Homecoming Party, there was something for Tigers past and present to participate in. Homecoming weekend also doubles as Family Weekend, providing an opportunity for many first years to see their families for the first time since going to college.

Food Justice Month
October was food justice month at Oxy, and all month long students enjoyed food justice-related events put on by FEAST, the Food Energy and Sustainability Team. At the Harvest Festival, FEAST gave out free vegetables and temporary tattoos in the quad. The beautiful FEAST garden was home to a party event, where attendees enjoyed the serene location and snacked on food grown right in the garden.

This fall, the theater put on two productions: Machinal and Country Music. Machinal, written by Sophie Treadwell, is an expressionist take on the true story of Ruth Snyder, who in 1927 murdered her husband and was subsequently put on trial and executed. Country Music, described as a story of crime and redemption, portrays the life of Jamie Carris through four scenes that take place over the span of 20 years.

La Encina
La Encina (The Oak Tree) serves as Occidental’s outstanding yearbook. With high-quality photography, impeccable editing, visually pleasing layouts and illustrative copy writing, La Encina seeks to provide a comprehensive, accurate, and diverse work that captures all aspects of Oxy students’ lives for the benefit of the current and future Oxy community.
The Occidental
The Occidental is one of Oxy’s largest and most prestigious groups, and for good reason their consistency and dedication to journalism is second to none. With a diverse collection of contributors and content, The Occidental is known for being the voice of the student body and the community. 76
KOXY
KOXY is best known as Oxy’s completely student-run radio station. Students plan, perform, and host their own shows which include anything from talk radio to music of varied genres. In addition to hosting student radio shows, KOXY hosts shows, plays music at on-campus events, and is the go-to organization when it comes to almost anything music-related on campus.
CatAList TV
As Occidental’s student-run TV channel, it’s up to CatAList to provide the student body with fresh and exciting content on a weekly basis. With contributors of all backgrounds and majors, CatAList is one of Oxy’s most diverse platforms, both on-screen and behind the camera. Shows in the past have included various news programs, an Oxy take on “The Bachelor”, and stand-up comedy specials. 77
Bengal Bus
In a city where not having a car can be a serious handicap, it can often be difficult to get around town for some people. Thankfully, there’s the Bengal Bus - a student-driven van that provides rides to-and-from campus and the surrounding area to students for free. Students can take the bus to see a movie at the Americana, go shopping in Pasadena, or even just to hit up the nearby Trader Joe’s on Colorado.
Bike Share
Bike Share is the go-to resource for anything bike-related on Oxy’s campus. Bike Share helps out students by offering bike repairs, and every Friday in the quad, Bike Share rents bikes to students for free. Bike Share has had an exciting year: this summer they purchased 10 new bikes, and their location changed from Berkus garage to the Bengal Room underneath the Marketplace. 78
FEAST Garden
Oxy’s Food, Energy, and Sustainability Team (FEAST) is a student club dedicated to exploring and enjoying the relationship between people and the food they eat and grow. Started in 2009, FEAST maintains its own garden on the edge of campus, which includes an extensive vegetable patch and chickens.
Student Activity Center
The Student Activities Center, located in the Johnson Student Center, provides resources for students to engage with both the Oxy community and the Los Angeles community. Many students know the SAC as the place to borrow a table from when they quad sit. The SAC also provides rentals for camping equipment as well as discounted movie tickets and theme park passes. 79
Sustainability Fund
Renewable Energy and Sustainability Fund is responsible for approving funding requests related to sustainable practices on campus. Comprised of 13 student members, Sustainability Fund is committed to improving the environmental responsibility of Occidental. Some of the events and proposals they fund and partner with include a beach cleanup day and Food Justice Month.
Diversity and Equity Board
The Diversity and Equity Board acts as a student-led branch of ASOC with the goal of supporting and empowering marginalized groups. DEB’s work includes minimizing and repairing the impact from gentrification and to maintain the school’s standards of diversity and equity.
80
Honor Board
Consisting entirely of student-jurors, Honor Board is a section of ASOC responsible for discussing and investigating alleged violations of the school’s Student Code of Conduct, the College’s Academic Ethics Policy, and the Honor Principle. With the goal of preventing students from taking unfair advantage of others, Honor Board plays an important role in the college’s proceedings and judicial system.
Office of Student Life
The Office of Student Life is dedicated to supporting the various organizations and clubs at the school, as well as to providing resources to put on events. As the backbone of many of Oxy’s extracurriculars, OSL plays an important role in creating opportunities for students that, for many, define their time at Oxy. Whether they’re organizing Greek Life, helping to run clubs, or even just putting on free events, OSL will always be available to contribute to the lives of Oxy students. 81
Office of Community Engagement
The Office of Community Engagement (OCE) continued to facilitate service opportunities and collaborations with partners throughout the local and greater Los Angeles community such as Food Forward, Wildlife Waystation, and Girls on the Run Los Angeles. The OCE hosted the annual MLK Day of Service, as well as supporting various student-led projects.
ASOC Senate
The Associated Students of Occidental College (ASOC) Senate is a student-run governing body responsible for acting as the voice of the student population, supporting students and their activities, identifying and addressing student needs, and providing open forums in order to communicate directly with their constituents. ASOC Senate is known for their accessibility, with open meetings and frequent officer hours with its senators and officers. 82
International Programs Office
The International Programs Office (IPO) is responsible for organizing Occidental’s various abroad programs; whether it’s for study, internships, or research, IPO is available to help with any part of the process. IPO-related programs include campaign semester (in which students work alongside a governmental candidate on their campaign), coordinating for foreign exchange students, and Oxy at the UN, which gives students the opportunity work at the United Nations in New York City.

Women’s basketball gave strong efforts over the course of their 25-game season, more often than not defending the honor of Occidental at their home games with an 8-6 record. With victories over local rivals CalTech (the “110 Freeway Rivals”) and Redlands, the team played with poise and consistency, managing to never go over a one-game losing streak. Both the women’s and men’s tennis teams completed an impressive 2018 season. While construction is underway on the new pool, the tennis teams play home games at Scholl canyon. Despite the location change, the Tigers upped their game this year, and the men’s team increased their win count to more than that of the last two years. Oxy’s tennis players deserve to be proud of their performance! 111

Women’s Water Polo made team development their priority in the 2017-18 season as they ushered in a new team consisting primarily of first-years. Meanwhile, veteran members like Monica Chernoff and Lori Berberian fought hard to secure the team’s win against Penn-State Behrend. 115
