The ability to think deeply and critically and communicate effectively is the foundation for career success. This dynamic new space brings together support for Oxy students in pre-health advising, national and international fellowships and career services. We want to connect them with opportunities for graduate school, the job market or anything in life they choose to pursue. This is our highest priority.” —PRESIDENT JONATHAN VEITCH

The Hameetman Career Center exemplifies Occidental’s commitment to life during and after Oxy. We strongly believe that a broad-based liberal arts education remains the single most versatile preparation for an astonishing variety of careers.

HCC professionals provide individual attention to students and alumni, helping to connect classroom learning to life outside in the world. Whether speaking with a first-year or an alum, advisers help clarify academic and professional goals and develop strategies to achieve them. The Center is a modern space where students can access advising in three key areas together in one central location: Career Services, National and International Fellowships and Pre-Health Advising. Separately, these offices have fantastic track records of success in supporting students to achieve their goals in entering graduate school, securing fellowships and grants and gaining employment. Together, these offices make it even easier for students and alumni to explore their options.

THE NEW CENTER’S OFFERINGS INCLUDE: • Intensive advising • Workshops • Application review • Training programs • Mock interview preparation • Information sessions The Center will also host other valuable events such as mixers for students, alumni and employers as well as opportunities to meet recruiters and representatives from medical schools and fellowship organizations.

MARCELLO SAENZ ’14 Major: American Studies, Pre-Law Career Services Experience: Capital Fellow Career Aspiration: Public Interest Lawyer A liberal arts college gives you the option to really flesh out what you want to do. At the point that I came to the career center, a little later on in Year 2, I hadn’t taken many politics courses or constitutional law. But based on my plans for the next two years and what I wanted to do from then on, Valerie suggested that I pursue a judicial fellowship and go clerk, to get that experiential knowledge. The knowledge I’ve gained at the judicial fellowship program, and the experience I gained clerking for an immigration firm, have geared me toward public interest law. I’ve applied to a couple of law schools and my dream school is Berkeley. From the moment I came here and talked to Valerie, I told her I wanted to go to Berkeley. She said I need to work on my LSAT and “bulk up your credentials and your resume.” Just recently I got accepted to Berkeley as well as Harvard, so that’s really exciting. I can’t wait to start law school.

We asked our employers what the top skills they seek in applicants are. Their response—problem-solving skills, multicultural competencies, critical thinking and outstanding communication and writing skills—is exactly what a liberal arts education delivers. Once students get those internships and apply their academic training, they are prepared to enter any number of occupations. Career Services provides a wide range of structured internship programs and opportunities for Oxy students.

INTERNLA

WALK IN MY SHOES

This program places students in summer internships in six sectors covering business, law, media and entertainment, science, social services and the arts. Students intern for 10 weeks, working full time at the participating organization.

This program places students with companies to shadow individual employees for two to three days to get a taste for their jobs. It provides a behind-the-scenes view of a profession as well as a great opportunity to being building a network within the field.

BUSINESS TRAINING PROGRAMS Oxy students are funded to participate in monthlong intensive business immersion programs offered through partnering organizations such as Fullbridge and Koru that offer hard- and soft-skills training to give our students a leg up when entering corporate, marketing, entrepreneurial and nonprofit jobs.

Major: Politics Career Services Experience: InternLA, CORO Fellowship Current Role: State Senate campaign staff Career Aspiration: Community advocate

I first went to the Fellowships Office for help in creating my own major. My sophomore year I started working with Career Services because I wanted an internship. Valerie saw me as a sophomore, and I was lost. She immediately provided me with handouts and taught me how to set up my LinkedIn profile. The Cornuelle Fellowship was I don’t really think I chose Oxy. a summer internship opportunity at I walked onto campus and felt Community Partners. My dream job like the students and I spoke was to work there, but I never would have even thought of applying— the same language.” I needed a push. Community Partners helps community organizations with logistics—like planning, fundraising and managing— allowing organizations to stay focused on their mission. I was on the fiscal sponsorships team, so I oversaw the inner workings of nonprofits. Once a week I would get together with students and Career Services staff and other interns to reflect. I saw the challenge of working in nonprofits—it’s stressful. It also showed me that I belong in nonprofits but that I don’t have to go right away. I can go to grad school in between. Now, after graduation, I’m going to the University of Cambridge to study sociology—getting my master’s with an emphasis in media and culture. I never would have done that without this office.

Of the many beneficial experiences I had with Career Services, the StrengthsQuest assessment has been one of the most valuable tools that I used throughout my time at Oxy and beyond. When I first took the assessment, it highlighted my strengths. When I retook the assessment four years later, I was surprised to see how my strengths had grown and changed. Through Career Services I had a summer internship organizing with the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, and it was a formational experience for me. I was able to experience firsthand what grassroots organizing looks and feels like while being supported by the InternLA program. Being able to debrief the internship experience with fellow students strengthened the impact of that summer. In particular, we completed a value-ranking exercise that forced us to clarify what it was that we value in our careers. The Coro Fellowship in Public Affairs was a life-changing experience. I am so grateful to Career Services and National Fellowships for suggesting that I apply, and for training applicants so rigorously. Once I had made the decision to apply, both offices invested so much time in reviewing our essays, prepping us for various parts of the strenuous CORO application process, and making sure we were as prepared as we could be.

The Joan Payden Career Associates Program is a phenomenal resource funded by our employer partner Payden & Rygel to help facilitate the transference of the liberal arts experience into marketable skills. It funds about 15 highly professionalized internship experiences over the summer in for-profit businesses in science, finance and other for-profit areas. Students work a 40-hour week and acquire a wealth of knowledge about an occupational area of interest.

Major: Economics Career Services Experience: Fullbridge Program, InternLA Current Role: Economist with Payden & Rygel

As an international student, one of the things I knew coming into college was that I would need full-time employment if I wanted to stay in the United States right after graduation. I worked very closely with Career Services early on, attending career fairs, Business Industry Night and Tech Industry Night and meeting with alumni and employers who recruited at Oxy. In my sophomore year, I started looking into the Fullbridge Program. The program was an intensive 30-day boot camp in Boston, where we went through a series of exercises and group projects. It culminated in a full business meeting, fake board and all, in which we presented our business idea. It definitely helped me prepare for interviewing with other finance firms. The summer of my junior year I interned with Payden & Rygel. Joan Payden, the CEO, is on our Board of Trustees and a strong member of the Oxy community. I interviewed with an Oxy alum who had also done the Kahane U.N. Program at Oxy, so we connected right off the bat. I was able to meet with more alumni who worked at the firm, helping me advance in my career and build a network at this firm even as an intern. I graduated in May 2015 and started working full time at Payden & Rygel as an economist. I’m currently working toward getting my chartered financial analyst certification.

EMIKO SCHWAB ’16 Major: Biology Career Services Experience: InternLA, Payden Career Associates Program Career Aspiration: Physician’s Assistant I chose Oxy specifically because I believe in the intersection between science and the arts. I’ve had various research opportunities while at Oxy. I currently work in the Moore Lab of Zoology, and through InternLA I did research in a corporate setting. Through those two experiences, I’ve gone on a journey that has led me to realize that I want to become a physician’s assistant. Career Services had a specific opportunity through InternLA with Response Genetics. I had the opportunity to work on cancer research—specifically to see how treatment would work on individuals. My experience with cancer research is like the thread in between everything I’ve wanted to do. I’ve actually gained a very deep relationship with my supervisor at Response Genetics—she has been a guiding force for me, helping me to explore different directions in the science field. Through this opportunity, I’ve been able to find my place in the sciences.

A lot of it has to do with my mother being physician in Mexico before coming to the United States So I grew up with a Latin American mindset, and thought Argentina would be easy to adjust to. That was wildly wrong. For my Fulbright fellowship I lived in a rural province in northern Argentina and didn’t have access to many resources. I taught English and also worked with a physician who worked with tuberculosis patients. We did a public health research study on patients who are not taking their tuberculosis medication, and were looking at ways to help them complete their treatment. It opened my eyes to some of the public health needs that are going unanswered in Argentina and around the world. The process of applying for a Fulbright is pretty stressful. The National and International Fellowships Office provided support every step of the way for each of my fellowship applications. Kim spent many hours with me to determine which awards fit my future goals. Through the process of applying for the Goldwater Fellowship, I was able to think deeply about my mathematical and scientific interests, guiding both my future research endeavors and career path. Career Services also helped me focus my career search and taught me the correct way to approach finding a job. The help of the Fellowships Office truly shaped my current career path. In my first year at Oxy I applied for the U.S.-U.K. Fulbright Scholarship. It’s a very intense process. I crafted the application with the Fellowships Office, but ultimately didn’t get it. I was working with Kim Babon in the Fellowships Office while I was abroad applying for the Truman Scholarship—a national scholarship in public service. She was so accommodating, sending me emails, reviewing drafts and hearing about my concerns. I am also a 2015 Point Foundation Scholar, a highly selective financial award given to LGBT students who devote themselves to bettering conditions for LGBT people. I had applied for the Point Foundation Scholarship three times, but was rejected twice. With the help of Dominic Alletto and Valerie Savior in Career Services, I was able to turn that around. Dom mentored me—helping me find what was missing. Valerie and Dom conducted intense mock interviews and helped me crack my narrative. I am very young and eager, yet also filled with so much self-doubt. Fellowships and Career Services has allowed me to have greater confidence in not only applying for things, but also knowing that the way in which I look at the world, which isn’t clear cut, is OK.

The Office of Pre-Health Advising guides students and alumni who are interested in matriculating to professional graduate programs in the health sciences. Through individualized counseling sessions and group workshops, we help students clarify their goals and prepare for graduate-level programs in such areas as medicine (including allopathic and osteopathic), dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, nursing, physical therapy and public health. Students are helped to develop effective personal strategies to successfully achieve their professional and educational goals.

The better I know the students, the better I can support them. We have a lot of conversations about their background and long-term goals, and we develop a plan that is unique to each student or alum. We may include on-campus research or shadowing programs, if they need to have the exposure to medicine. Through those experiences, they get to really understand why medicine is the right path for them.”

Major: Biology Pre-Health Advising Experience: Post-graduate advising Current Role: Master’s in biomedical sciences, working toward master’s in nutrition and dietetics

I chose Oxy because I wanted an opportunity to get an education where I was going to be the focus. Even in the sciences, you would think you’d want to go to a big school, but I had this gut feeling that I would get better training here. I knew I wanted to do something in health. I did a biomedical research program in high school but I wasn’t sure what I could do with my interest. I came here thinking I’d be a researcher, or go to med school but focus on research. But in talking with Angela Wood in Oxy’s Pre-Health Advising Office, it dawned on me that that’s not what I was meant to do. I wasn’t passionate about it. She helped me figure out that I wanted to do was primary care. The Oxy CHLA shadowing program confirmed that I like seeing patients. It was a jam-packed two weeks. I got to see different specialties within pediatrics and talk to doctors. From Angela I have also learned a lot about the process of applying to med school. I’m the first person in my immediate family to go to med school and I’m first-generation from El Salvador, so I didn’t know how things work here—how do I apply, when do I take the MCAT, what classes do I take? Med school is getting hard but I think I’m very prepared and able to take on the challenges that med school and residency will present and actually being a physician. Oxy is a huge part of that.

Oxy had all of the important components I was looking for in a school: small student body, good professor-to-student ratio, strong science reputation and diversity. When I visited the campus, it felt like a big family and I wanted to be a part of it. I’ve always had a love for the sciences, but I still wanted the opportunity to be exposed to other disciplines for a well-rounded education. I first started going to the Pre-Health Advising Office my junior year, but it wasn’t until after college that I really started to see my pre-health adviser. After Oxy, I felt very lost about what I wanted to do career-wise. It was during this time that I started to meet with Angela. Angela helped me navigate through my options and provided me with so much information and guidance during a very uncertain time. Even though I was no longer a student, she always made time to meet with me. It took a few tries before I found the right field for me, and Angela was with me every step of the way. Without her, I would not be where I am today and I feel extremely grateful to have met her. The Pre-Health Advising Office is not only a great resource for students, but for alums as well. That is the great thing about going to a small school such as Oxy; all of the resources are at your fingertips. And there is no obstacle, question, or worry that Angela Wood can’t help you address. She is amazing! I obtained a master’s in biomedical sciences at Rosalind Franklin University and am currently working toward getting my master’s in nutrition and dietetics at Loma Linda University.

Occidental students get plenty of opportunities to try out medical careers before committing to that path. As part of the Oxy CHLA program—one of the few such programs in the country—each year a group of Oxy pre-med students spends two weeks shadowing doctors at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to get a better sense of what the practice of medicine entails and to help them narrow down their fields of interest. They can also pursue research opportunities with the Huntington Medical Research Institute, where students commit to long-term, clinically relevant research. Other local hospitals and groups offering volunteer and research opportunities include County-USC Medical Center, City of Hope, Kaiser Permanente Hospice, Glendale Adventist Memorial Center, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and AIDS Project Los Angeles.

SHIRLEY BAE ’17 Major: Chemistry Pre-Health Advising Experience: Pre-Med, Oxy CHLA shadowing program I am an aspiring physician currently taking pre-med courses. I chose Oxy mostly because it is a small liberal arts college and I longed for faculty and student interaction. I always wanted to become a doctor growing up. I first went to the pre-health advising office because I wasn’t sure what I had to do for med school. Angela has helped me go through all the classes I need to take and other requirements. She helps me in almost everything I do—scheduling my courses, my extracurricular, when to take my MCAT, when to apply for medical school and which medical schools to apply to. Angela helps me feel calm. Whenever I go into her office she offers me tea to calm my nerves and not get anxious about all the studying that I’m doing. Pre-med courses are challenging even for the smartest person on campus. I did the Oxy CHLA shadowing program in my freshman summer. Each day you shadow a different doctor and department, and gain exposure to what they do and what their daily life is like. One of my dream med schools is USC. Angela has invited Oxy alumni from USC med school and that has been really helpful for me to learn what they do and their curriculum.
