nostalgia Nostalgia is often defined as a sentimental affection for a happy past. In the 2018-2019 edition of Occidental College’s yearbook, Nostalgia, we take this time to reflect upon a rapidly-changing world at both Occidental and the communities surrounding our campus. While new students arrives at Oxy and seniors prepare for Commencement, we are always able to recognize the motifs that Oxy is comprised of. As the staff of La Encina Yearbook, it falls upon us to capture moments that encapsulate the emotions and sentiments of the year such that the Occidental community may look back while moving forward. Nostalgia is a commemoration of the year and our history. Without further delay, we are elated to present this year in review.

At Occidental, the Mary Norton Clapp Library and the Center for Digital Liberal Arts (CDLA) give students the tools and spaces they need to accomplish whatever academic goals they have. Whether you are looking for help with a paper in the Writing Advisor Center or just a quiet place to study, the library is always available for help. Meanwhile, the CDLA offers guidance and workshops regarding technical skills such as data visualization and digital archives in order to help students work in an increasingly digitized world. Occidental College and its students would be nothing without its world-class professors. Whether they’re in the classroom or leading research in the field, Occidental’s faculty covers nearly every field of study imaginable. Practically every student who walks Oxy’s halls will have at least one professor who, at some point in their academic career, profoundly influenced the person they would become. Even former President of the United States Barack Obama acknowledged that, during his time at Occidental, the late politics professor Roger Boesche helped set him on the path that would ultimately see him take the highest office in the land. While some students may study abroad in Europe or Africa, Occidental’s Kahane United Nations Program gives students the opportunity to travel to New York City to work with the United Nations for an entire semester. The only program of its kind in the country, students participate in a rigorous internship while also taking classes, thoroughly balancing hands-on experience with academics. The program also travels to Costa Rica and Washington, D.C., making for a once-in-a-lifetime journey that only Occidental could provide.

At Occidental, the Marketplace (MP) sits at the center of the campus dining experience. Greek Life For students seeking to create lasting relationships and become active participants in the local community, Greek life can be the way to go at Occidental. With organizations for everyone — including the gender-neutral Zeta Tau Zeta — Greek life provides an excellent opportunity for students to make friends and and give back through to the community volunteer work. Whether they are raising money for advocacy groups or cleaning up public areas, Greek organizations work to better the community while also fostering lifelong relationships between members. Coming into college as a first year can be an intimidating thing. Students are catapulted into a world far from home with people they don’t know in circumstances likely unparalleled by any experience they’ve ever gone through. Orientation week is Occidental’s way of helping transition these individuals into a part of Occidental’s culture. The Occidental College Theater Department put on two major productions in the fall of 2018, ranging from drama to dark comedy. The first, entitled “The Many Deaths of Danny Rosales,” offered a drama regarding the death of the titular character and addressed themes of racism and police brutality. The second play, “U-R-U,” imagined a dystopian future in which robot servants exist and considered how robot servitude could impact humanity.

dance production The annual Dance Production (Dance Pro) once again packed Throne Hall with dancers and spectators alike for a weekend filled with joy, energy and, of course, dance. Spring fest Joey Bada$$

For the 2019 edition of Spring Fest, Occidental College brought prominent rapper Joey Bada$$ for an energetic performance in the Greek Bowl. Also featuring acts from CJ Fly and student DJ Funky Mar (real name Marianna Martinez), the fest began with a carnival in the Academic Quad before moving to the Greek Bowl for the main events. Thrilled students danced for hours during the music-filled night, with Bada$$ giving past Spring Fest performers T-Pain and Chance the Rapper a run for their money!

For students interested in exploring the world around Occidental, the Student Activities Center (SAC) is there to help! Located in the Johnson Student Center, the SAC provides everything from discounted movie and amusement park tickets to camping equipment in order to best help students enjoy all that Los Angeles and California have to offer.

While they mainly operate behind the scenes, Occidental’s student-run Programming Board provides the student body with many of the school’s most prominent events. Responsible for organizing the annual Fall and Spring Fests, in addition to dozens of other activities, the hard-working students of Programming Board helped bring acts such as Joey Bada$$ and CJ Fly to perform during the 2018-2019 year.

The yearbook staff is highly trained in editing, photography, layout design, copy writing and illustration. Covering news both on- and off-campus, the Occidental is the school’s student-run newspaper. The Occidental gives students the experience of working in a real newsroom that engages actively with both the Occidental and Eagle Rock communities. Unique to Occidental, the Food, Energy and Sustainability Team (FEAST) works to improve Occidental and the local communities relationship with food and the environment. In addition to running their own organic garden at the edge of campus, FEAST also run composting operations on campus and hold events for students to learn more about food and sustainable eating practices.

As the school’s student-run radio station, KOXY gives students the opportunity to run and curate their own radio shows, playing everything from pop to rock to avant-garde jazz. But KOXY is not just a radio station — they also organize live concerts featuring groups such as Crumb and print a fan-zine by and for the student body. At the center of everything that KOXY does is music, whether on the airwaves, in print or on stage.


oxytv Formerly known as CatAList TV, Oxy TV is the school’s only student-run television network. Putting out content on a weekly basis, Oxy TV gives student-filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their work, whether they work with genres such as comedy, drama, reality or even a little everything! Open to filmmakers with all levels of experience, Oxy TV provides a great outlet for Oxy’s creatively-inclined students.

bengalbus As Occidental’s own ride-sharing service, the Bengal Bus provides students with transportation around the neighborhoods of Eagle Rock and Highland park. Perfect for quick trips for groceries or shopping, the Bengal Bus gives students who may not have cars the opportunity to get to know the area around Occidental a little better — for free! The Bengal Bus also does “Wildcard trips,” taking students on free trips to fun spots all across the city. STUDENT LEADERSHIP 53

Occidental’s Bike Share provides the student body with the gift of mobility, renting out bicycles for students to get around town on, or even just to commute across campus with. But the student-run Bike Share does more than just loan out bikes — they also offer bicycle repairs, organize group rides and even host races across campus! If it involves two wheels and a frame, Bike Share likely knows…

For all things job-related, the Hameetman Career Center (HCC) is ready to help! At the HCC, advisors assist students with a range of job-related issues, from finding employment after graduation to even just learning how to right your first resume. Outside of their offices, the HCC also hosts events such as career fairs and workshops, which give students the opportunity to network and make valuable connections in their fields of interest.

asoc senate The Associated Students of Occidental College (ASOC) consists of the student body of the college and includes various leadership positions. Key components of ASOC include the Senate and Honor Board, which consist of elected officials and act as the student government, and the Renewable Energy and Sustainability Fund and Diversity & Equity Board, which work to address issues related to the sustainability and equity on campus. ASOC also funds various student services on campus, giving students to the opportunity to pursue their interests.

honor board The Honor Board consists of an elected group of students who act as jurors during conduct proceedings at Occidental. As the judicial branch of the Associated Students of Occidental College (ASOC), Honor Board provides student input on issues related to student conduct and academic misconduct in order to offer a fair process during investigations. While not as visible as other branches of ASOC, Honor Board nonetheless performs an important duty for the student body. STUDENT LEADERSHIP 55

The Renewable Energy and Sustainability Fund (Sustainability Fund for short) offers financial support to students pursuing projects involving environmental sustainability at Occidental. A branch of the Associated Students of Occidental College, Sustainability Fund advocates for the environment by sponsoring events with groups such as the Food, Energy and Sustainability Team (FEAST) and holding events such as the Environmental Justice Student Speaker Series, which gave students the opportunity to discuss their work in regards to environmental issues.

Occidental’s Diversity and Equity Board (DEB) is a student-run organization dedicated to empowering and improving the lives of marginalized groups both on and off campus. As an extension of the Associated Student of Occidental College, DEB works to minimize the gentrifying effects of the school and cultivate a climate of inclusivity. The board hosts town halls and regularly engages with the student body and administration as it works to hold Occidental to its standard of diversity and equity.


slice The Student Leadership, Involvement, & Community Engagement Office (SLICE) supports the student body in manner of ways. From offering jobs through Student Services to planning Orientation, SLICE plays a big role in the lives of almost every student. Key aspects of SLICE include managing and aiding student-run clubs and Greek Life, organizing Orientation programs, and putting on free events like movie screenings, beer gardens, and roller skating!

The International Programs Office at Occidental College serve as an intermediate between numerous study abroad programs and students, helping them navigate the application process to either study or research abroad. IPO also coordinates Orientation and other programs for international students in order to welcome them to their new home at Occidental College.

The Project for a Sexual-Assault Free Zone (Project SAFE for short) works to end sexual violence at Occidental through education and advocacy. Project SAFE’s role on campus includes providing advocacy services for survivors and hosting events to educate the public about preventing sexual violence. Run by a combination of dedicated staff members and students, Project SAFE works to make Occidental and the world a safer place for all.

Few first-years are lucky enough to live in BellYoung hall for their first year. Bell-Young is nestled between Wylie and Pauley Hall. It makes going to class easy because of its direct routes to most academic buildings. The sunny common rooms are kept cool with air-conditioning. The third floor of Bell-Young is now co-ed making it a welcoming and accepting environment for everyone to be a part of. The walls of Bell-Young hold great memories students look back on fondly as their time at Oxy goes on. 62

At first glance, Berkus gives off the look and feel of a five star hotel. For students seeking a different kind of living situation, Erdman is the place to be. As Occidental’s only substance-free hall, Erdman allows students to live in an environment committed to living a quieter life. Once home to alum and President of the United States Barack Obama, Haines Hall offers students housing that mixes historical value with practical amenities. Like other lower campus housing, Haines provides ready access to dining and classrooms, and even shares a small meadow with Chilcott that is perfect a day of lounging. sTEaRNS Hall At the top of upper campus sits Stearns Hall, a hall unlike any other on campus. Students in Stearns can expect outstanding views of Los Angeles, a multi-story common room, and a thriving social scene. The confusing layout may take time to learn, but Stearns’ charm far outweighs the inevitable occasion of getting lost at least once. Furthermore, Stearns is a quick walk from most classrooms and the Cooler; one can easily leave a late-afternoon class, grab a snack, and be back in time to watch the California sunset illuminate the horizon. With their best season in over a decade, the men’s basketball team proved themselves as a force to be reckoned with in Division III athletics. The Tigers started their season off strong with a remarkable 15-game winning strike that included a win against local rival Caltech before finishing the season with a nail-biting 64-62 victory against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. While their post-season playoffs were cut short after one game, the Tigers nonetheless made history when senior Zach Baines acquired his 1000th career point while playing at Oxy.

The role of general staff is much harder than it looks as you have to learn so much about all aspects of La Encina. From no yearbook experience to learning about our techniques and methods was a challenging task and you proved you were up to the task!

Over this year you adapted to the general staff role extremely quickly at the first deadline day, and opened up big chunks of your time to promoting the book and pre-orders to the Oxy community. I wish you best of luck in your senior year!

As you had just joined La Encina this year, you took on a lot of tough work as a first year, especially with the many on-campus offices and groups we assigned you. We appreciate your persistence and willingness to try new types of photography, and can’t wait to see what you can do next year!

In this past academic year at Oxy, it was discovered that the 1980 and 1984 editions of La Encina include particular offensive, demeaning, and racist images. These images and their publication do not and never will reflect our mission in publishing La Encina. We condemn the publication, inclusion, and the actions contained of these images by the staff and editors of the 1980 and 1984 editions of La Encina. These photos do not accurately nor diversely reflect the Oxy student experience, and we are sad that a publication we dedicate our time to make was used in such a manner. As we move forward from this discovery, we recognize that in our 113 year history, there could be other occurrences that do not reflect the values of the current La Encina staff or the Occidental community at large. We must acknowledge the significance and extent of this incident most recently brought to our attention, and we are committed to developing an inclusive snapshot of our community that represent our values. We welcome open dialogue on developing diversity training programs as part of our new staff training program and input from campus groups to ensure that this behavior never occurs again.

Times have gone by with studying, friends, more studying, and events this academic year. Having been part of yearbook for the better part of my college experience, I have had time to reflect on the role of yearbook in the Oxy student experience. We celebrate the student experience, capturing the many idiosyncrasies of the 2018-2019 year at Oxy. Whether you are featured in this book or you’re reading this in thirty years, I sincerely hope Nostalgia has given you a sense of joy. This is my second year as managing editor of La Encina. There is not enough space on this page to describe what I’ve learned. I’ve learned so much about communicating with both on-campus departments and college staff, being a leader, and developing a long-term project and vision for this book. I sit here on a Friday night with my editors to finish the 113th edition of La Encina, and it is seriously time for me to pass on this torch and focus on getting some sleep.
