t’s 7am Saturday morning. Probably the busiest day of the LA Harbor boat show. You roll out of bed, excited for the full day ahead because you’ve come all the way from Santa Cruz to see the boats this weekend. You gaze out the window at the crisp morn-
ing sky awaiting the endless boating possibilities at the LA Harbor Boat Show. People stroll in from all destinations. Some local, some from Huntington Beach, some from Arizona, some even from Texas...all to ditch the land and get a taste of the nautical bliss only boating and the ocean brings. The venue in itself is charismatic and full of
equally charismatic people. Whether you are looking to buy a boat or just looking for the pure bliss of looking, Alexander Marine USA’s display gave you the opportunity to do just that. Smack dab in the center of the large marina you see awaiting you, the navy blue color of the Alexander Marine USA flags

waving in the wind along with their five beautiful and versatile boats in the first of their two sections along with their personable brokers. You truly understand the meaning of the saying, “the best is saved for last”. You are particularly lured by the classic catamaran 44’ Aquila in this first section and are eager to see what’s next. You turn left and stroll down the walkway and straight ahead you spot the other three Alexander Marine boats. Your built up anticipation is finally met when you see what you’ve been dreaming about all week...The 85’ OA. The line waiting to board the boat flew by and the second you step into the spacious and luminous salon, you felt at home, understanding why you, and everyone else took their time to see these boats this weekend. The weekend in San Pedro at the LA Harbor Boat Show exceeded your expectations in every way! The plethora of boats ranging from the luxurious 32’ Pursuit and sleek and compelling 51’ Galeon to the grandeur 85’ OA and elegant and venerable 73’ Horizon, you were kept on your toes and wanting more. Seeing the smiles from each person as they casually strolled around with their families along with the smiles of the Alexander Marine USA staff made the weekend even better. And with the boats glistening in the sun...it’s almost as if the boats were smiling back.

T
his year marked the 40th year of the “West Coast’s premier floating boat show”. This September’s Boats Afloat Show was held the 13th-16th, the event showcased over 200 vessels in the vibrant South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle. The show not only showcased beautiful yachts
that could be toured but offered women’s docking classes, adult sailing lessons, free boat rides, fun kids activities, as well as the opportunity to speak with on-hand industry professionals and experience the latest industry innovations in boating technology and gear. The entire show started with the VIP party on our brand new 88’ 2019 Ocean Alexander. The weather
could not have been more perfect for this event. Adorned with beautiful décor by Mary Flores, we served delectable appetizers and a delightful wine and bubbly selection all night. The evening was filled with great music, friendly conversations, and lots of laughter as old friends were able to re-connect, and new friendships formed over the pure love of boating.

The VIP party was followed by sunny crisp early fall days. We had great attendance at this year’s show and loved being able to see customers and show our beautiful line up- the show consisted of our 88’ 2019 Ocean Alexander, 55’S 2018 Azimut, 42’ 2017 Galeon Fly, 38’LS 2018 Tiara Sport, 33’ 2019 Regal OBX, 34’ 2019 Carver C34, and 55’ 1994 Sea Ray. We had a full beautiful line up in front of our office as well. In case you missed the show or would like to have another look at one of the stunning vessels we have to offer, please feel free to stop by our office conveniently located in South Lake Union. We look forward to seeing you at the next Seattle show in January 2019.

Debbie ’ s D O C K S I D E D I S H In each issue, “Debbie’s Dockside Dish” features a different boat friendly recipe straight from the galley of Debbie Groesbeck, a seasoned boater, foodie, and HR manager at Sur La Table in Seattle, Washington.
“
Fall is the perfect time to cozy up with a bowl of creamy tomato soup. The unusual addition of carrots and sweet potatoes in this recipe is the secret to its creamy texture without using cream. Add a gooey cheese sandwich as a dipper and your dinner is set!
”
CREAMY TOMATO and B A S I L S O U P 1 medium sweet potato, peeled & diced 3 medium carrots, peeled and diced ½ sweet onion, diced 3 Tablespoons Olive Oil 1-28 oz. can San Marzano Tomatoes 1-15.5 oz. can fire roasted diced tomatoes 1-32 oz. container low sodium chicken broth *veggie broth can be substituted, if needed 1 Tablespoon dried basil Fresh basil leaves for garnish Salt and Pepper to taste
In a large Dutch oven, sauté the sweet potato, carrots and onion in olive oil on medium low heat until tender – approximately, 10 minutes. Add the San Marzano & fire roasted tomatoes, chicken broth and dried basil and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove the soup from the heat to blend. If a chunky consistency is desired, carefully use an immersion blender to blend. If a smooth consistency is desired, use a blender or food processor to blend small batches of soup until smooth. *remember to use caution when blending hot soup and always allow for the steam to escape. Return the soup to the stove over low heat. Slowly heat soup to desired serving temperature and add fresh basil for garnish. Serve with a grilled cheese sandwich for dipping and dinner is ready!

words by Nicole Monosky, Sales Administrator
the ten commandments of boating with dogs & tips to make it easier
1
FIT FIDO WITH A LIFE VEST How safe is that doggie in the water? While most dogs are natural swimmers, there are several important reasons why every dog should have and wear a life vest while on board any vessel. The sea can be far more taxing that you may realize. Because a dog’s first instinct is to ignore signs of fatigue in favor of its human, it is always important that they are safely strapped in to a properly fitted flotation jacket. You can find all sizes, colors and designs to suit your pup’s personality!
2
SHADY PUPPY It’s rarely the first thing to come to mind when preparing to take your dog boating, but arguably one of the most important: sun protection. The first step is to provide shade for your dog. If your vessel does not offer shade or an interior cabin, you may want to think about purchasing a covered crate (discussed below). Second, stop by your local pet supply store to purchase sunscreen. Yes, sunscreen. Dogs, especially short-haired breeds, can easily become sunburned and should use a canine-appropriate light SPF. Canine sunscreen comes in balms or sprays and most are water-proof.
3
MARINE PUPPY PADS When your pup needs to go, things can get tricky at sea. Pee pads or a patch of faux turf on the swimstep is certainly convenient, but it may take some training. You have likely spent months of your dog’s early life training him or her to do their business outside and away from the home, so this might feel like going back to basics. Start with the pad on land first and use lots of positive reinforcement before moving it to your preferred location on your vessel. Have patience and before long your pup will catch on to using the canine head!
4
DOG OVERBOARD PLAN Just like you have a plan in case of man-overboard, you should always have a plan to put in action in case a dog slips into the drink. Writing out the steps and discussing them with friends and family on board always helps. Incorporate everything including engine shutdown to doing a calm thorough exam of the dog’s medical condition once you have him or her back on board. This is another instance in which a properly fitted life vest is important, as not only will it keep your dog afloat but also provide a sturdy and safe handle to get your dog back on deck.
37
5
WAGS FOR FRESH WATER Most dogs will try to drink seawater at least once, but it’s imperative to do all that you can to prevent it from becoming a habit. Dogs don’t sweat and can overheat quickly, so they will look for any available water source. Just like at home, it’s important to keep plenty of fresh water available for your dog while at sea.
6
WARD OFF SEASICKNESS Many dogs experience some level of motion sickness, and it is most prevalent among puppies. If your dog does not end up growing out of it, there are a few ways you can help your dog get its sea legs. Take an easy-does-it approach with short harbor cruises first before slowly working up to longer trips and potentially rougher seas. If you continue to observe signs like dizziness, lethargy and vomiting, stop the boat and get your dog ashore to seek veterinary care.
7
CRATE YOUR FIRST MATE There is a reason why crating is such a popular method of basic dog training. A crate can offer both sanctuary and safety for your dog in your home and on your boat. If your dog suffers from anxiety while underway, crate him or her in a safe and steady place on your boat. This will keep the dog calm and secure, leaving you with less distraction and more peace of mind.
8
PLEASE NO FLEAS A flea infestation at sea can be a nightmare. Make sure that not only is your dog up-to-date on flea medication, but that you are properly stocked with at least one other method of flea prevention or eradicator. If chemicals aren’t your thing, look into diatomaceous earth as a natural and very effective way to kill fleas on both carpeted floors and dogs themselves.
9
DOG GONE FISHIN’ When there’s a gloriously stinky piece of fish bait within easy reach of your dog, they don’t think twice if there is a sharp hook inside. Follow the simple but extremely important procedure of always keeping baited hooks far out of reach. Additionally, you may want to invest time into training your dog that bait is off-limits altogether with the life-saving command, “Off!”
10
SWIM STEP IT UP Step up your swim step to include your dog! While some larger breeds can finagle a swim ladder with the rest of the family, most will find it difficult to downright impossible. Plucking a Pomeranian out of the water may be fine for some but hauling a ninety-pound Lab out by sheer will and a prayer is a different story. Luckily, there are many dog-friendly swim ladders and floats on the market that are easy to install and remove, lightweight and come in an array of high-visibility colors.
