HYPE MUSCLE INTERVIEW With World Fitness Champion OCEAN BLOOM
JACOB McWHIRTER
COMPETITION HISTORY (most notable) What gym do you train out of? Gibson Kickboxing and Pankration (Advertisement on page 19) First and last name Nicknames and how you were given them (fitness related of course) Jacob “fast fist” McWhirter. I got that name because I was in the ring with my best friend Jake “the snake” Harris and I kept hitting him really fast and getting away before he could hit me! Competition History (most notable) West Coast Can-Am Championships The Western Canadian Martial Arts Challenge Physique Stats including height (off season/competitively) Height: 4 feet 7.5 inches Natural season weight: 71 lbs Competition weight: 70.5 lbs Age: 10 Horoscope Sign: Pisces Occupation: Student Are you Sponsored/endorsed? Yes, by Mom and Dad. Why Compete? What was it that propelled you into competing? I like to compete because I saw my cousin in a full-contact Karate competition so I wanted to see what it was like. What word of advice would you give to any inspiring competitor? Try your best! What was your most memorable moment while competing? When I was put into a rear naked choke hold by a opponent and I was able to fight the hold off for the over - the round and never gave up or tapped out! Describe the first time ever you stepped on stage. Where you nervous? Yes, I was very nervous. It was in the BCIT gym and it was full of people. My coach and trainer, Ryan Diaz helped me stay focused and worked out a plan of attack. What does your training routine look like? 3 days a week; Monday, Wednesday and Friday’s. Sometimes I go over to my best friends house next door where we do more training with Mr. Harris, who is also a training instructor with Gibson Kickboxing. Couple times a week I’ll work my ground game at home and put my Dad into various submissions! Dieting wise, generally speaking. What type of diet do you follow or believe? I have to eat what my mom and Dad tell me. What would you say is your favorite finishing move and why? Arm bar because it’s easy to do and very effective! What is your weakest physical attribute? Flexibility, I really have to work hard to stay flexible! What is your strongest physical attribute? Speed and agility. I’m smaller and lighter than most kids my age so I like to be able to get in, hit then move out. With the bigger kids, I like to keep ahead of them so they can’t use their weight advantage on me. After a match or competition the first thing you want to eat is? A Gatorade to get my energy back. The one thing you hate about competing? All the waiting around for it to start. I’d prefer to arrive at the gym with enough time to warm up, get focused then go kick some butt! The one thing you love about competing ? There is not one thing that I love about it, I just seem to like everything about competition. I’m a competitive person and like all of it. How has the sport assisted you in your mental and physical health? Mr. Gibson makes us meditate before the beginning of class. This helps me focus on myself. The instructors at the gym push us to do our best and that really helps me get in shape. What does the future have in store for you? (upcoming competitions, events you are participating in, etc) I like to compete at least once a season. The next one is in October and I’m getting ready now for that competition at BCIT. If you weren’t in the Martial Arts/Mixed Martial Arts industry what would you be doing? Playing other sports at school. What is you favorite cheat food/meal? Burger King whopper. In a ring fight match, who do you think would win in their prime, MIKE TYSON or BRUCE LEE? Bruce Lee! He’s awesome and represents everything that is good about the sport.

Name: Ocean Bloom Height: 5’4 Off season weight: 132 Competition weight: 122 Why Compete? What was it that propelled you into competing? I have been dancing since I was 3yrs. old and I have a passion for acting and physical fitness. I was in a professional dance company for 5 years and took many acting and theater classes. My drive and love to perform leads me to the competition stage. The intensity that is required for FITNESS competitions is something I love to explore year after year. What word of advice would you give to any inspiring competitor? I think that competing is something that you must have a passion for. It is not something that happens overnight or with immediate payoff. The key is to be clear about what you want and to believe in yourself. If you don’t believe you can be a top model or top competitor then you will embark on an impossible journey. I am often unclear of how things are going to come together, I see the end result and I work backwards. Of course I also advise asking for advice from the people who are the most successful in what ever area it is you are pursuing. Each day take one step in the direction of our goals and you will then be one step closer to reaching them. That is my belief and what I have done. TOOLS: 1. Take as many classes courses and workshops as you can to improve on your craft. 2. Have tons of photos taken so you become comfortable in front of the camera and know how to pose your body. 3. Always have good promo material with you, you never know who and when you might bump into someone. 4. Have a positive professional attitude at all times. 5. Promote yourself as much as you can or no one else will. 6. Enter online contest, and submit your photos to the magazines 7. Enter as many events as you can so you can be seen. 8. Ask your self everyday “what can I do today that will contribute to my goals”. 9. Enjoy what you’re doing, it will show up in your photos and in your performance 10. Don’t give up no matter what life throws at you. Then you will be a champion! What was your most memorable moment while competing? In 2004 I flew to Toronto to compete in the Fitness Canada Pageant. I was also in the process of making my first body sculpting DVD. I had a camera man coming to film the entire event. I flew in 4 days early so I would have time to get settled in and focus on practicing my routine. The day after I arrived I went to the gym to practice. I didn’t spend enough time warming up before I jumped rite into doing my routine. The first run through I did was my last. I was in the middle of one of my flips when my left leg slipped out of the socket. I tore my groin instantaneously and collapsed on the ground. I was alone in the gym studio at the time, when the pain sank in I broke into tears. It took me a while before I could even stand up. I was devastated as I proceeded to
try and move with little mobility. I spent the next 3 days getting massage, shiatsu, even acupuncture. I was stressed out, retaining water and in a lot of pain, still I wanted to compete. I came to the conclusion that I would rather go out and do my best under the circumstances than not go out at all. I would feel better breaking my leg on stage then backing out at the last minute. With everything working against me those last few days I still went ahead and competed. I ended up placing 4th. I gave everything I could and didn’t give up. What does your training routine look like? (spilt, reps, sets, etc) I do 20 + reps on most exercises and I like to alternate between training 2 body parts at a time and doing full body circuit training sessions. I sprint train twice a week and do power yoga. What would you like to say to those women out there who avoid weight training like the plague in fear they may get too bulky. I think it’s funny how far off these women are from the truth. It is very difficult to GET BIG. I lift hard and heavy and that is what keeps me fit. It is a waist of time to use tiny little weights doing lots of reps. Lifting weights will burn lots of calories and give you beautifully shaped lean muscles. Dieting wise, generally speaking. What type of diet do you follow or believe in? (timed, GI diet, low carb) I try to eat 5-6 small meals regularly throughout the day. I eat something every 2 ½ - 3 hours. I have a low carb protein shake (Quatro) every morning. I drink 2-4 lrts of (purified) water each day. In addition to consuming the most nutritious, unprocessed (and preferably organic) foods possible, I also take high-quality multivitamins, a greens supplement and extra vitamin C daily. I only reduce my carbs a few days before a competion. 9) What does it take to develop an aesthetically pleasing physique such as yours? I do many different types of training to keep my body symmetrical. Weights, dance classes, yoga, martial arts and sprinting. 10) What would you say is your favorite bodypart to train and why? I like training my chest because I feel it’s one of my strongest body parts. After a contest the first thing you want to eat is? I like to eat really good steak believe it or not. What does the future have in store for you? (upcoming competitions, events you are participating in, etc) I will be competing in the WBFF competition on Sept.15/07 in Toronto. I will be attending many of the upcoming UFC events on behalf of STATUS FITNESS Magazine. I am looking forward to doing more interviews and training articles with the fighters. I will also be meeting up with some of Hollywood’s fittest stars for our Hollywood celebrity training features in STATUS. If you weren’t in the fitness/bb industry what would you be doing? Acting fulltime What is you favorite cheat food/meal? I love to eat chocolate!
