For sheer variety, Ocean City’s downtown certainly has it, from amusements, restaurants, shopping, art, outdoor activities and history. It has so much because downtown Ocean City is constantly revitalizing and improving its businesses and attractions with the help of the Ocean City Downtown Development Corporation.
Discover the fun, food, shopping and events of downtown OC This summer, take a short stroll off OC’s great beach and check out downtown GLENN IRWIN n Executive Director, Ocean City Development Corporation Downtown Ocean City is home to a number of hotels and motels that offer a variety of styles and rates. Some of these establishments have served Ocean City visitors for generations, while others are quite new. In addition,
there are plenty of accommodations that are available for daily, weekly, seasonal or year-round rental. Another major draw of the downtown area is the abundance of restaurants, from gourmet to casual dining. Along with the eateries right on the Boardwalk, other popular options can be found along the bayside and streets of the downtown area of the resort. Retail stores are necessary in establishing a strong identity for a downtown area, and Ocean City is no exception. While the Boardwalk businesses provide a multitude of retail goods to visitors, businesses off the Boardwalk offer
more of a specialty character. The next time you are in the downtown area, make sure you visit its businesses. Here are several other reasons to visit downtown Ocean City, whether it’s during the off-season or in the height of summer: n Amusements and arcades: Downtown Ocean City is lucky to have two amusement parks in its southern area: Trimper’s Amusements and the Pier. These long-standing locations offer a wide selection of rides, games and amusements, while the arcades provide challenges for young and old alike. n Ocean City Life-Saving Station
Museum: Located at the south end of the Boardwalk by the inlet, this historic building is home to many exhibits detailing Ocean City’s maritime heritage, the lore of the sea and more, at a very reasonable admission price. Open yearround. n Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum: A visit to this Boardwalk attraction is fun, educational and always entertaining. Also open year-round. n Watersports and fishing: Downtown Ocean City is the hub of watersports activities in the resort. Options include sightseeing boats, cruises, perSee WALKING on Page 2

sonal watercraft rentals, charter fishing boats, parasailing, speedboat rides and more. And of course, fishing is available from the Inlet and from public piers in downtown Ocean City. n Bicycles, Segways and scooters: Each provides a fun way to travel around Ocean City. During the summer, bikes and Segways are allowed on the Boardwalk only in the morning; however, in the off-season, they are allowed anytime. n Older buildings: Although Ocean City does not have a designated historic district, it does have many notable older buildings throughout the downtown area. Most of these structures are highlighted in the free Downtown Walking Tour Guide brochure, which is available at the Downtown Association’s information booth on the Boardwalk near Caroline Street at City Hall located at 301 Baltimore Ave., and at the OCDC office located at 108 Dorchester Street. In 2008, the OCDC provided bronze plaques to the 20 oldest buildings in Ocean City. St. Paul’s By-The-Sea Episcopal Church, located at Baltimore Avenue and Third Street, was the first Ocean City building added to the National Registry. Free walking tour guides are also available for the area be-
tween Fourth Street and 15th Street. n Special events: Most visitors to Ocean City are familiar with the awardwinning special events the town of Ocean City provides, such as Springfest, Sunfest, and Concerts on the Beach. But several other large, private special events take place in the downtown area, including Bike Week in September and the Cruisin’ Ocean City events in May and October. The summer sees other activities downtown including the Art League of Ocean City’s art show on Somerset Street; the free music events at Sunset Park and Somerset Plaza, sponsored by the OCDC; and the OC Cruzers custom car display at Somerset Plaza two Sundays each month from June through September. n Parks and open spaces: Public parks and spaces in downtown Ocean City include Somerset Plaza, the Inlet Park, Sunset Park, and the Ocean Bowl Skate Park, the oldest skate park on the East Coast. So the next time you are downtown, make sure you take advantage of the many things to do and see both on and off the Boardwalk. (The OCDC is a nonprofit organization charged with revitalizing downtown Ocean City. For more information or to become a member of the OCDC, visit our Web site at www.ocdc.org or call at 410-289-7739.)
BEST FACADE The property at 105-107 11th St., was voted by Ocean City Development Corporation membership in 2011 as” best façade project” of first 100 completed façade projects completed in downtown Ocean City. Property owners are, from left, Kevin Maynard, Susan Maynard, Linda Dashiell and Cindy Janaskie. Funds for additional façade projects are available by calling the OCDC office at 410-289-7739. Buildings must be located south of 17th Street in Ocean City. The program can pay up to one-third the cost of exterior improvements for qualifying projects.

Experience the B’walk and create a memory For many, this promenade is Ocean City, with shops, food and amusements Two-and-a-half miles of scenic amusements, arcades, restaurants, shopping, site seeing, historic attractions, biking and jogging. It’s no wonder the Ocean City Boardwalk is continually ranked in the top 10 boardwalks in the United States. The Ocean City Boardwalk is in the midst of a total reconstruction project. Portions of the wooden boardwalk were rebuilt this past off season and the remaining Boardwalk will be replaced with new wood this coming offseason. A new comfort station will be built with a permanent stage area in the coming year. Besides the regular special events provided by the town of Ocean City, there will be several new special events, too. There are now three light shows every Sunday night using a tall inflatable sphere with aerial lasers. Every Tuesday night, there is a fireworks show on the beach. History: The Boardwalk, officially known as Atlantic Avenue, dates back to 1902, when several oceanfront hotel
owners got together and constructed a wooden walkway for the convenience of their guests. At high tide, it was rolled up and stored on hotel porches. Around 1910, a permanent promenade was built. It ran about five blocks and was then expanded to 15th Street in the 1920s. After being leveled by a storm in March 1962, it was rebuilt to its present 2.5-mile length, ending at 27th Street. In 1999, major improvements were made to the Boardwalk, to create a safe and attractive experience. Helpful Information: Restroom Locations, South Division at the transit station, Worcester Street, Caroline Street, Ninth Street and 27th Street. Downtown Association Information Cottage: Between North Division and Caroline Street on the Boardwalk. Boardwalk Train: Runs daily in season. Summer hours (May 25- Sept. 3): 11 a.m. to midnight daily; 10 a.m. to midnight on holidays, weekends and special events. Sunfest (Sept. 20-23): 10 a.m. to midnight/ Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Ocean City receives Main Street Maryland designation State recognition means access to more resources to continue improvements In April, the town of Ocean City was designated one of three Maryland Main Street communities. The Main Street Program is a comprehensive revitalization strategy. With this new designation, the town of Ocean City will have access to new funding and technical assistance. The program strives to strengthen the economic potential of Maryland’s traditional main streets and neighborhoods. Using a competitive process, Main Street Maryland selects communities who have made a commitment to succeed and helps them improve the economy, appearance and image of their traditional downtown business districts. To accomplish Main Street goals, DHCD has partnered with the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s National Main Street Center, which developed the Main Street Four Point Approach for commercial revitalization. Beginning in 2008, Main Street Maryland programs will also incorpo-
rate a Fifth Point: Clean, Safe, and Green. This approach emphasizes the importance of working simultaneously in the following areas: DESIGN: Enhancing the physical appearance of the commercial district by rehabilitating historic buildings, encouraging supportive new construction, developing sensitive design management systems, and long-term planning ORGANIZATION: Building consensus and cooperation among the many groups and individuals who have a role in the revitalization process PROMOTION: Marketing the traditional commercial district’s assets to customers, potential investors, new businesses, local citizens and visitors ECONOMIC RESTRUCTURING: Strengthening the district’s existing economic base while finding ways to expand it to meet new opportunities and challenges from outlying development CLEAN, SAFE, AND GREEN: Enhancing the perception of a neighborhood through the principles of Smart Growth and sustainability Ocean City has designated the area from the inlet to Fourth Street, including the Boardwalk, as its new Main Street boundaries. The OCDC will administer this new program.
DUGOUT MURAL Looking at this picture of a ballfield dugout on Fourth Street in Ocean City, more than one person might have to take a moment to realize that the skateboarder is not real, but a painting. It is all part of the Ocean City Development Corporation’s Public Art Program, which has added artistic scenes to all sorts of public fixtures, from dugouts to utility boxes.
