Pantech Beach Championships under way in OC Top skateboarding, BMX athletes compete on beach during four-day resort stop LISA CAPITELLI ■ Assistant Editor OCEAN CITY TODAY/LISA CAPITELLI

(Aug. 17, 2012) After months of anticipation, the wait is finally over — the Dew Tour, with its world-class athletes, is back in Ocean City. On Aug. 6, workers began building a vertical ramp, Mega 2.0 ramp, skateboard bowl and a BMX park, on the beach, just north of the pier in downtown Ocean City. Scurrying hours on end, day and night, the crews completed the blocks-wide “Dew Tour Experience” earlier this week — just in time for Day 1 of the four-day Pantech Beach Championships, which kicked off yesterday, Aug. 16, and will continue through Sunday. In April, Alli Sports, a division of the NBC Sports Group, announced a fouryear renewal of its partnership with Mountain Dew, along with the 2012 Dew Tour schedule — Ocean City was stop No.

With just a few days remaining before the Pantech Beach Championships get under way in Ocean City, work continues at the Dew Tour Experience as the sun prepares to set Sunday evening.

1. The Ocean City Council in January set aside Aug. 16-19, for the East Coast leg of the 2012 Dew Tour, as requested by the tour’s planners, and town representatives had been awaiting confirmation. “I think Ocean City is a perfect location for the Dew Tour,” Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan said last week. “It was a great event last year and I think it will be even better this year.” Meehan attended several of the resort competitions last year, when the tour made its Ocean City debut. He said for a first-time event of that magnitude, everything went better than expected. Meehan presented a special award to Brazilian Pedro Barros, winner of the skate bowl

contest. The 2011 Pantech Open marked the debut of the Dew Tour’s skate bowl competition. “The athletes are just fantastic. They interact with fans and the kids look up to them. They’re role models,” Meehan said. “It’s very genuine. It adds something to the event being able to interact with the athletes. It makes it even more entertaining.” Ocean City was the first of four stops during the tour’s 2011 season and its first beachfront venue. A vertical ramp for skate and BMX competitions, a skate bowl and a BMX park were set up on the beach, along with a festival village, between Dorchester and Talbot streets. The

Pantech Open set a Dew Tour attendance record by drawing approximately 73,000 fans during its four-day run. “From the record-setting attendance to the incredible success of the musical component in 2011, Ocean City was a major success for the Dew Tour,” Dew Tour General Manager Chris Prybylo said in April, when it was announced Ocean City would be the first tour stop in 2012. “In addition to being a perfect fit for our beach venue, we’ve also developed great partnerships with the entire Ocean City government, including the mayor, City Council and the town of Ocean City staff. We have incredible relationships with local businesses, and the fans showed tremendous support.” The tour has been reshaped this year to showcase action sports in three largescale, premium and “grand-slam” style events. The 2012 Dew Tour locations are Ocean City, Aug. 16-19; San Francisco, Oct. 18-21 (Toyota City Championships); and Breckenridge, Colo., (Mountain Championships), Dec. 13-16. Dew Tour representatives worked closely for several months with a number of athletes to determine the best mix of sports and disciplines at each stop this year. When the Dew Tour originated eight years ago, it filled the role of introducing action sports to a wide audience, through multiple events across the country, Prybylo said. In the future, the Dew Tour will fill a See LEGENDS on Page 13

Announcing White’s decision online, Alli Sports, which organizes the nationwide Dew Tour, stated, “We understand Shaun’s decision to put his health first and appreciate his dedication to the Dew Tour and his sponsors. We are looking forward to an exciting four days of competition on the beach in Ocean City.”

Athletes fly higher in ’12 as Tour adds Mega 2.0 to lineup LISA CAPITELLI ■ Assistant Editor (Aug. 17, 2012) New to the Pantech Beach Championships is the Mega 2.0, an event in which skateboarders and BMX athletes will perform a variety of tricks high in the sky. “Adding Mega 2.0 allows our Skate and BMX Vert athletes to showcase their abilities in a new discipline that will be very exciting for spectators. Fans will be able to watch the Mega 2.0 competitions right from the beach,” said Dew Bob Burnquist Tour General Manager Chris Prybylo. The Mega 2.0 ramp is a smaller version of the MegaRamp. The 30-foot gap and 18-foot quarter pipe of the Mega 2.0 ramp provide athletes the same opportunity for dynamic tricks as the larger specs of MegaRamp, though it is a more technical ramp that allows them to showcase street-inspired tricks, as well. It’s big enough to do some huge tricks, but not so large that the athletes are losing technique and style. The MegaRamp has two different gap sizes set at 50-foot and 70-foot wide. The quarter pipe is 27 feet tall. The roll-ins are 65 feet and 85 feet tall from ground level. The Mega 2.0 has one gap set at 30 feet wide. The quarter pipe is 18 feet tall and the roll-in is 35 feet tall from ground level. Skate Mega 2.0 practices will take place today, Friday, from 9-11 a.m.; Saturday, 3-5:30 p.m., and Sunday, 4:30-5:45 p.m. The competition is scheduled for 6-7 p.m. on Sunday. “Mega 2.0 is cool. It’s a smaller version of MegaRamp. I have a MegaRamp at my house and I have a good time with it,” said skateboarder Bob Burnquist. “I’m looking forward to it because it’s a new event for the Dew Tour. It’s a little slower, a little lower than the MegaRamp, but still faster and higher then Vert (60 feet wide, 13 feet tall with roll-ins).” BMX Mega 2.0 practice times are today, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The contest is set for Saturday from 1-1:45 p.m. “I think it’s great they’re bringing something new to the series. It’s something people haven’t seen before. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said BMX athlete Steve McCann. “There will be a lot of spills and thrills. It will make for a good event for the crowd.”

LOOKING BACK: 2011 PANTECH OPEN

These athletes finished Top 3 in their discipline last July in Ocean City The following information was provided by Alli Sports and compiled by Ocean City Today staff … PHOTO COURTESY MARK HUEY PHOTOGRAPHY

SKATEBOARD VERT 1 BUCKY LASEK Hometown: Baltimore Birthdate: Dec. 3, 1972 Maryland native Bucky Lasek got his first skateboard, a Steve Caballero model, at age 12, after his bike had been stolen. He turned pro in 1990 at age 18, left his Maryland home in 1998 and headed west to Southern California. Over the course of his twodecade career, Lasek has proved time and again he’s the fiercest, and most composed, of any competitor on the vert ramp. With a never say die attitude, a perfectionist’s approach to choreographing contest runs, and an uncanny ability to pull out a miracle when necessary, Lasek has taken home multiple Dew Cups, back-to-back X Games vert golds (twice) and Vans Triple Crown titles. He unveiled the first new skateboarding trick of the 2008 Dew Tour by landing a boneless fronstslide rodeo during the Panasonic Open. All this despite numerous injuries, with scoped knees as a recurring theme. He forever will reign as the winningest vert skater of the 2000s. 2 PIERRE-LUC GAGNON Hometown: Montreal, Quebec, Canada Birthdate: May 2, 1980 On his 8th birthday, PierreLuc Gagnon, who goes by “PLG,” was given his first skateboard, and his father, Dennis, built a ramp in the back yard to encourage his son’s skating. In 1992, PLG’s father bought a skate park, and that same year, the 12-year-old began to enter skateboarding competitions. He joined the pro circuit after winning the Vans Amateur series in 1996, and in 2000, packed his bags, kissed his parents goodbye, and headed west to San Diego. After winning his first X Games gold in 2002 (followed the next day with another gold in best trick), he’s been one of, if not the guy to beat at nearly every event. In 2006 a pulverized patella gave him a major setback, but he came back even stronger and more focused. By 2008 he was back in peak form, winning X Games, the Maloof Money Cup, and, after getting his first Dew Tour victory of the year in Orlando, eked out the points needed to take home the Dew Cup.

Winners of the 2011 Pantech Open Skate Bowl contest were, from left, Ben Hatchell, third; Pedro Barros, first; and Bucky Lasek, second.

3 SHAUN WHITE Hometown: Carlsbad, Calif. Birthdate: Sept. 3, 1986

Shaun White burst onto the skateboard scene in 1999 and hasn’t looked back since. Although renowned for his work on the slopes — claiming two Olympic gold medals in 2006 and 2010, as well as a total of 10 Winter X Games titles in snowboarding slope style and super pipe — White is also a well-respected skateboarder. He established himself as a threat on the vert ramps in 2005, when he won the first-ever Dew Tour stop. However, he ended the season ranked ninth in the Dew Cup standings. On the 2007 Dew Tour, Shaun captured three consecutive wins, as well as his first X Games gold on the vert ramp, and he went home with the 2007 Dew Cup. In 2006, White was named the Rider of the Year in both TransWorld Snowboarding and TransWorld Skateboarding magazine.

SKATEBOARD BOWL 1 PEDRO BARROS Hometown: Florianopolis, Brazil Birthdate: March 16, 1995

Brazilian Pedro Barros is from a neighborhood called RTMF, which is home to some of the best skaters and surfers in all of Brazil. His dad is both his best skate session buddy and his best friend. For the Brazilian, family always comes first. Barros won most of the biggest bowl contests around the world. Names like Lincoln Ueda, Bob Burnquist, Rune Glifberg, Omar Hassan, Alex Perelson inspire Pedro to skate the way he does, but it’s Leo Kakinho, Marcelos Kosake, Rodolfo Ramos that really showed him the way. Spending more then 70 days in the U.S. each year, Pedro already considers California his second home. 2 BUCKY LASEK Hometown: Baltimore Birthdate: Dec. 3, 1972

3 BEN HATCHELL Hometown: Manassas, Va. Birthdate: April 4, 1990

Ben Hatchell is the best example of a man-Am if there ever was one. Winning the Phoenix Am two years in a row, this Zero skater has been making a real name for himself and throwing down big tricks with the best of them. No matter if it is a vert ramp or a park course, if Hatchell is in the lineup, competitors beware.

BMX VERT 1 JAMIE BESTWICK Hometown: Nottingham, England Birthdate: July 8, 1971 Jamie Bestwick never thought he would become a BMX legend. Although he started riding BMX with his friends at 10 years old, Bestwick only kept up with the sport as a hobby. As the undisputed champ on the vert ramp since he won his first X Games gold in 2000, Bestwick is probably thankful he quit his job working for a company that repaired engines for major airlines in England. A seven-time champion at the X Games, Bestwick won his second Dew Cup in 2006 after taking first place in four of the five Tour stops, and he garnered the Dew Tour Athlete of the Year award, as well. Bestwick claimed his fourth consecutive Dew Cup during the 2008 season, then nabbed his third straight X Games gold. He is sole owner of the BMX vert Dew Cup. 2 CHAD KAGY Hometown: Gilroy, Calif. Birthdate: Nov. 21, 1978 Always one to push the envelope, Chad Kagy already had his training wheels off by the age of 4 and was racing BMX as an 8-year-old veteran. After Continued on Page 15

Dew Tour to debut BMX Flatland during Ocean City competition LISA CAPITELLI ■ Assistant Editor (Aug. 17, 2012) The Dew Tour has added the first Flatland BMX event to the Pantech Beach Championships competition line-up. Flatland is a freestyle BMX riding style performed on smooth, flat surfaces that do not include any ramps, jumps or grindrails. “The Dew Tour is always looking to expand in a way that represents the best in action sports,” Dew Tour General Manager Chris Prybylo said Monday. “Through our ongoing communication with athletes and the industry, we felt that Ocean City

was a prime spot to showcase a unique event like BMX Flatland.” The Flatland event is scheduled to take place Sunday from 4:30-5:30 p.m. It will be more of a demonstration event than a competition. The four athletes —some of the biggest names in Flatland BMX — chosen by a specialized committee to display their skills during the exhibition are Terry Adams, Matt Wilhelm, Mathias Dandois and Alex Jumelin. “It pretty exciting because as a pro Flatland rider that has been involved in the contest circuit for so many years, this is huge. It is definitely a great step for [the

sport of] Flatland to be included, and it’s great for Dew Tour because it is just as progressive as other forms of BMX,” Adams said during a recent interview with the Dew Tour posted on www.allisports. com/dew-tour. The 29-year-old has been riding Flatland for 19 years. “It’s awesome that Dew Tour recognizes this because we definitely deserve to be include in these big events … “I’m really stoked that Flatland is a part of Dew Tour this year. I have waited a long time for this, and am very confident this will go well and that everyone will be stoked,” he said. There is an amateur Flatland BMX cir-

cuit in the United States. For professionals, there is a world circuit, consisting of three or four annual stops. Other events are also held each year worldwide in places such as Europe and Asia. “I would say that those three guys (Wilhelm, Dandois and Jumelin) are always my biggest competition at any event,” he said during the interview with Dew Tour. “What is really cool about this group is that everyone definitely has their own style to offer. It will be very easy for everyone in the crowd to recognize and see the differences.” To read the full interview, visit www.allisports.com/dew-tour.

WHAT ATHLETES HAVE TO SAY …

Maryland’snative son returns toOC for competition LISA CAPITELLI ■ Assistant Editor

Baltimore native Bucky Lasek celebrates his Skate Vert victory during the 2011 Pantech Open in Ocean City.

(Aug. 17, 2012) Approximately 100 world-class skateboarding and BMX athletes have converged in Ocean City for the Pantech Beach Championships, which began Thursday and will continue through Sunday. No athlete is more familiar with the resort than professional skateboarder Bucky Lasek, who grew up in Baltimore, vacationed frequently in Ocean City and skated at the Ocean Bowl park on Third Street. Now at 39 years old, Lasek will be battling some of the top skateboarders this weekend, which marks the second year the Dew Tour has come to Ocean City. In 2011, Lasek did not disappoint his fans when he finished second in the Dew

Tour’s first Skate Bowl event and took top honors in the Skate Vert competition. During his fourth and final run of the Skate Vert contest, Lasek didn’t hold anything back and jumped into first place with an 88, advancing him to the fiveman super final. Again on his last run, Lasek was on point, scoring an 88.5 with one rider, defending 2010 Dew Cup Skateboard Vert champion, Pierre-Luc Gagnon, left to take the ramp. The crowd watched in anticipation as PLG started his run. When he missed a trick, Lasek fans knew he was the winner and burst out in cheer. It was his 10th Skateboard Vert final victory, a Dew Tour record. Lasek raised his arms in triumph in front of the largest Skate Vert crowd in Dew Tour’s eight-year history. “I think that’s what they write books

and make movies about. I lived a dream today,” Lasek said after the contest. “There was no pressure [during the last run]. I just know what I can do and I dropped in and didn’t think about anything else except the tricks I had ahead of me … “Doing it in Ocean City, in my home state of Maryland, it was a storybook ending,” he said. At the end of last season, Lasek finished third overall in Skateboard Vert with 305 points. Shaun White was second with 307 points and Gagnon first with 340 points. Gagnon is set to compete in Ocean City again this year. Due to a knee surgery, White will not take part in competitions, but he is scheduled to be present to support the other athletes. Lasek said last Friday that he was Continued on Page 9

“ready to fill my belly with Fisher’s Popcorn.” One of his favorite stops on the Boardwalk, Fisher’s even had Lasek behind the counter last year handing out popcorn to customers during a rain delay in the competition. His schedule at this weekend’s event has him participating in the Skate Vert and Skate Bowl competitions. “I’m looking forward to riding the bowl again,” he said. The bowl is probably my favorite event because it’s very diverse and the fact that it’s on the beach sets the mood. Which would you rather choose, being stuck inside an arena or on the beach? The whole vibe is more alive and free feeling.” Lasek, who lives in California, arrived in town earlier this week to prepare for competition. His goals are to make some new tricks on the vert and put together fun runs. Lasek would love to win in front of his hometown fans, but is expecting tough competition.

Ocean City buses, trams make getting to Dew Tour easier (Aug. 17, 2012) The town of Ocean City encourages those attending the Dew Tour to take municipal buses to the event, which will be held on the beach north of the pier and steps from the Boardwalk. Coastal Highway bus service costs $3 for a ride-all-day pass or $1 per boarding. The normal summer bus schedule will be in effect throughout the event. Buses run approximately every 10 minutes, from 6 a.m. to 3 a.m., and every 20 minutes, from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. The Ocean City Park-N-Ride on Route 50, just west of the Route 50 bridge, offers free parking. Cost is $3 for a ride-all-day pass or $1 per boarding for shuttle service to the South Transit Station in the downtown. Shuttle buses run every 20 minutes, from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. The Boardwalk tram also offers service daily. Trams will operate from 10 a.m. until midnight. For more information about the Ocean City Transportation operations, call 410723-1606 or visit www.oceancitymd.gov.

“The level of skateboarding is unbelievable,” he said. “It should be a fun show.” To be successful, Lasek said it “just comes down to doing what I do.” The crowd also gives athletes a boost, he said. “Their excitement helps. You can feel their energy, along with the energy we’re feeling it’s like peer pressure almost to go for [a big trick],” said Lasek, who is also a professional rallycross driver. Bob Burnquist will also be competing this weekend and will be back at full strength. Last year, he participated with an injured shoulder during the Skate Bowl and Skate Vert contests. DEW TOUR: PANTECH BEACH CHAMPIONSHIPS 11

Skateboarding most notable athletes hit bowl for ‘Legends’ event Bowl designer Chris Miller, Steve Caballero, Pat Ngoho were scheduled to compete LISA CAPITELLI ■ Assistant Editor (Aug. 17, 2012) One year ago, the Dew Tour presented the Alli Rideshop Skate Bowl Legends Jam during the Portland Invitational in Portland, Ore. Because of its success, a similar event was scheduled for Ocean City during the Pantech Beach Championships. The contest was set to take place Thursday. “We had a great response to our Skate Bowl Legends Jam in Portland, Ore., last year, and it made sense to bring it to Ocean City to reflect the community’s commitment to bowl skating,” said Dew Tour General Manager Chris Prybylo. Ocean City’s Ocean Bowl, on Third Street and St. Louis Avenue, opened in 1975. It is the oldest operating municipal skate park on the East Coast. Athletes that were scheduled to compete in the Skate Legends Bowl event were Steve Alba, Steve Caballero, Eddie Elguera, Jeff Grosso, Christian Hosoi, Tony Magnusson, Chris Miller, Lance Mountain, Pat Ngoho and Duane Peters. They were chosen by a committee and invited based on their status as true “pioneers” of bowl skating. Many of the men have been around for decades and continue to work within the industry and oc-

casionally compete. “Steve Alba, Duane Peters and Eddie Elguera were three of the best in the late 70s and 80s and the rest of the field in the 80s and 90s were the best in bowl skating,” S. Caballero said Miller, chief creative director for Alli Sports. “The whole group is over 40 [years old] and everyone has achieved a certain status as a professional.” Miller designed the portable concrete strucL. Mountain ture and was engineered by Spohn Ranch. The Skate Bowl made its debut during the Dew Tour Pantech Open in Ocean City last summer. It was disassembled following the competition and re-assembled in Pat Ngoho Portland. Miller stopped competing professionally in 1992, though he occasionally participates in some events. He won the Legends Jam in Portland. Miller, who lives in San Diego, had the opportunity to test the Skate Bowl he designed in Ocean City last year. He also did on-air analysis for NBC during the Pantech Open skating competitions. “For me, it was huge. You imagine what you want to skate and then design

it. It was fun to see something you imagine come to life,” said Miller, who drew inspiration from bowls he skated in the past. He also showed his design to skaters to get feedback. “It was the first time anyone’s created a portable bowl. It turned out great.” Miller said last Friday he was looking forward to skating the bowl again and meeting up with old friends this weekend

in Ocean City. He will also be broadcasting the skating events again this year. “There’s a series of masters/legends competitions. Everyone knows each other because they’ve been competing 30 years or more,” Miller said. “It’s a reunion of sorts. It’s much more than a competition. Everyone loves and supports each other, which makes it kind of special.”

now lives in California, said he will focus on Skate Vert and Mega 2.0, a new addition to lineup and probably not compete in the Skate Bowl competition. “I’d love to be able to do all three events, but it’s really taxing and tiring. It’s a lot in one weekend,” Burnquist said last Friday. Burnquist injured his back in June when he fell 20 feet while working on the MegaRamp during practice for the X Games Big Air in Los Angeles. He spent the next 18 hours in a wheelchair, but

after working with trainers, he returned a few days later and won the Mega Ramp event. After taking a break to heal, the 35year-old Burnquist said he started skating again about two weeks ago. He said he is feeling good and ready for this weekend. “I just want to make my runs and make sure I express my skateboarding the best as possible in Ocean City,” he said. Toyota has been a headline sponsor of the Dew Tour and also sponsors Burn-

quist, the No. 1 BMX rider in the world, Jamie Bestwick and BMX rider Drew Bezanson. The three athletes can be found this weekend in the Toyota booth in the Dew Tour Experience, where they will be signing autographs and meeting fans. “A great part of what we do is having that interaction with fans,” said Burnquist, who is also a certified helicopter pilot. Steve McCann, who resides in Melbourne, Australia, is set to compete in the BMX Vert and the new Mega 2.0 events in Ocean City. “The main thing is to keep it on two wheels and give it your all so you have a chance of winning,” he said. “Most of the field is pretty tough. Jamie [Bestwick] is usually the one to beat. He’s the reigning champ.” McCann is coming off a win in the X Games BMX Big Air event. He said athletes will have to deal with the elements, especially the wind when competing on the beach. “On the beach there is always wind off the ocean. It’s a wait-and-see game, then we’ll have to adjust to it,” he said. “I’m excited to come back to Ocean City.” When he is not in his native Australia, McCann spends his time in Woodward, Pa. working with young riders. During off time from competing this weekend, fans can find McCann in the Mongoose booth signing autographs.

different need, bringing action sports to the next level with bigger, better events, he said. “Our beach, city and mountain theme provides a fresh and exciting direction for the sports to progress, and each of the three events will draw inspiration from the host city to create its own identity,” Prybylo said. “The voices of the athletes and industry members we’ve held panels with have helped guide the development of the new model, and we’re looking forward to it all coming together.” Events scheduled for Ocean City include Skate Vert and Skate Bowl, both offered last year, and new this year, a Skate Bowl Legends contest, held Thursday, and a Skate Mega 2.0 competition. BMX Park and Vert contests will be featured again this year in the resort along with the new BMX Mega 2.0 and Dew Tour’s first-ever Flatland event, where four athletes will show off their skills. Events kicked off last evening with the GoDaddy Surf Expression Session. “For this year’s Dew Tour, we added competitions that are popular with the athletes, and fit well with the beach setting in Ocean City. We’re always working to help progress and grow the sports we represent,” Prybylo said last week. “Adding Mega 2.0 allows our Skate and BMX Vert athletes to showcase their abilities in a new discipline that will be very exciting for spectators. Fans will be able to watch the Mega 2.0 competitions right from the beach. We had a great response to our

with live streaming, exclusive behind the scenes and in-depth content on dewtour. com. The new broadcast platform will offer coverage each of the four days and more live Dew Tour coverage over NBC and NBC Sports Network than any other year, according to www.allisports.com. The Pantech Beach Championships will air live on NBC Sports Network Friday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m.; Saturday on NBC at 1 p.m.; and Sunday on NBC at 2 p.m. Additional broadcasts on NBC Sports Network will be Aug. 18, at 10 p.m.; Aug. 19, at 11 p.m.; and Aug. 25, at midnight. “The amount of TV coverage Ocean City got last year was incredible. It generated a huge amount of exposure for Ocean City that you can’t buy,” said Susan Jones, executive director of the Ocean City HotelMotel-Restaurant Association. Similarly, Abbott said she heard nothing but positive comments following the 2011 event, including how great the town looked on national television. The Dew Tour Pantech Open broadcasts were made available in more than 200 million households in more than 50 countries. “Certainly there is a positive impact on our economy with an event of this magnitude, but it also brings the town increased exposure with the national television coverage,” she said. “Last year’s Dew Tour brought the town over 900 million impressions (number of views an ad can receive), which is tremendous in terms of promoting Ocean City.” For additional Dew Tour information, visit www.dewtour.com.

DEW TOUR: PANTECH BEACH CHAMPIONSHIPS 15

LOOKING BACK: 2011 PANTECH OPEN Continued from Page 6 entering his first professional competition at 17, Kagy divided his time between BMX park and vert. In 2003, he switched his focus to competing solely in vert. He picked up and moved cross-country the same year to train at Woodward Camp and further perfect his craft. After a broken neck kept him off his bike for nine months, he was dubbed the comeback kid when he finished fourth at the 2004 X Games. Completely healthy in 2008, Kagy returned to top form and claimed the gold medal in X Games Big Air and the silver in vert, as well as second overall on the Dew Tour. For the 2009 season, Kagy earned a consecutive second overall in Dew Tour standings, nabbed silver in X Games Big Air and bronze in vert. 3 SIMON TABRON Hometown: Newquay, England Birthdate: Oct. 17, 1973 When Simon Tabron was a little boy, he dreamed of becoming a professional stuntman. He started his career racing BMX, but got into freestyle a year later and, at the age of 13, entered the UK World Championships and placed third. After turning pro in 1990, Tabron brought his talent — and his knack for spinning tricks — to the U.S., winning three consecutive Vert World Championships (2002-04). Since then, Tabron

has added a more than a few awards to his trophy case, including Gravity Games gold in ‘02 and seven X Games medals — silver in 2007 and ‘09 in addition to five bronzes along the way.

BMX PARK 1 KYLE BALDOCK Hometown: Gold Coast, Australia Birthdate: March 29, 1991

Australian Kyle Baldock grew up with people telling him he wouldn’t amount to anything. If you’ve ever seen this kid ride, you’d know he’s proving them wrong every time he gets on his bike. New to the Dew Tour, he won everything from qualifiers straight through to the finals in park during his first appearance here in Ocean City. The following month, he took dirt by storm and landed a double back flip in a discipline he says he’s “just learning.” 2 DENNIS ENARSON Hometown: La Mesa, Calif. Birthdate: April 19, 1991 Dennis Enarson started racing BMX at the age of 8 and hasn’t looked back since. A double threat in both park and dirt, Enarson’s debut as a pro came in 2007, when he took third-

place honors in park at his first Dew Tour event, following up the performance with his first-ever event title — a win in dirt at the third stop in Portland, Ore. He continued his success in ‘08, winning the PlayStation Pro’s dirt contest and closing out the year in third overall in the dirt standings and 10th in the park ranks. Although he was unable to complete the final event of 2009 in both events due to lacerating his liver midway through the dirt final, the teen was still able to finish top 10 overall in both disciplines once again, taking fourth in dirt and sixth in park. 3 RYAN NYQUIST Hometown: San Jose, Calif. Birthdate: March 6, 1979 A household name in both BMX dirt and park, Ryan Nyquist started riding at the age of 3 and competed in his first BMX freestyle competition when he was 16. Competing in his first X Games at the age of 18, Nyquist has been a BMX legend ever since. By 2003, he had won every major dirt competition — X Games, Gravity Games, Vans Triple Crown, and the King of Dirt. In 2009, Nyquist improved on his 2008 fifth-place finish in dirt and walked away with his second BMX dirt Dew Cup — the first rider to achieve that feat since the inception of the Dew Tour. He also placed fifth overall in the park standings after winning the final stop of the year.

Australian Kyle Baldock won the BMX Park event during the 2011 Pantech Open in Ocean City.
