Discover the fun of downtown Ocean City T his summer, take a stroll off OC’s great beach and check out downtown food, shopping and special events. Downtown Ocean City is the perfect vacation spot for all groups, from families to the over-21 crowd. Offering attractions for all ages and interests, such as amusements and museums, or parks and water activities, you can make Ocean City the vacation you desire. In addition to these attractions, there is a variety of hotels and restaurants, with a broad variety of styles and rates. Some of these establishments have served Ocean City visitors for generations, while others are quite new. There also are plenty of accommodations that are available for daily, weekly, seasonal or year-round rental.

Another big draw of the downtown area is its restaurants and don’t forget our famous Maryland blue crabs. Along with the eateries right on the Boardwalk, other popular options can be found along the bayside and streets of the downtown area of the resort. Whether you’re looking for a quiet crowd or a party crowd, you don’t have to look far. Retail stores are necessary in establishing a strong identity for a downtown area and Ocean City is no exception. While the Boardwalk businesses provide a multitude of retail goods to visitors, from sweets to graphic-tees, businesses off the Boardwalk offer more of a specialty character. The next time you are in the downtown area, make sure you pop in for some shopping. Here are several other reasons to visit downtown Ocean City, whether it’s during the off-season

or in the height of summer: Historic buildings, special events, parks and open spaces such as Somerset Plaza, the Inlet Park, Sunset Park and the Ocean Bowl Skate Park, the oldest public operating skate park in the country. In addition, there are amusements and arcades, the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum, Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, water sports, fishing and bicycles and Segways. So the next time you are downtown, make sure you take advantage of the many things to do and see both on and off the Boardwalk. (The OCDC is a nonprofit organization charged with revitalizing downtown Ocean City. For more information or to become a member of the OCDC, visit www.ocdc.org or call at 410289-7739.)

Sunset Park: small venue has big schedule S unset Park, located along South Division Street between Philadelphia Avenue and the bay in downtown Ocean City, is Ocean City’s newest park and more people are discovering it each year. It is located immediately south of the U.S. Coast Guard Station facility. Constructed in 2007, Sunset Park has evolved into a great venue for special events of all sizes and varieties. Free music, Shakespeare plays, movie nights and other events are on the 2015 schedule. And it’s all free! This spot was the original location of the railroad bridge entering Ocean City from Old Bridge Road in West Ocean City. This railroad bridge was destroyed by the 1933 storm that hit Ocean City. However, the new park is designed with railroad style features including the design of the restroom building, trellis, and the bricks located on the perimeter of the park that are from the original train station once located along S. Philadelphia Avenue. This linear park contains a lighted entertainment stage, restrooms, environmental plaques, nice landscaping and a short pier that provides fantastic views of the bay. Sunset Park is highlighted by a 60foot-tall tower that is lit at night and can be seen from the Route 50 bridge as well as other downtown locations. For the past eight years, the Ocean

Listeners take in a free concert at Sunset Park on South Division Street next to the Coast Guard station in downtown Ocean City.

City Development Corporation (OCDC) and the Town of Ocean City have partnered with various local nonprofit organizations to bring free music concerts to Sunset Park. These concerts will be performed on Thursday evenings from July 2 to Aug. 27 starting at 7 p.m. Local nonprofit organizations join

with OCDC to sponsor individual events and performances throughout the year. Sunset Park is a beautiful setting and can even be rented out for private uses such as weddings and the like. If interested in renting this space for a private event, contact the Town of Ocean City’s Recreation and Parks De-

partment at 410-250-0125. Make sure that you check out some of the special events at Sunset Park this summer. You can find more information on music events at www.ocdc.org or at www.ococean.com. You can also call the OCDC at 410289-7739.

Dance of the Dolphins at the intersection of the Route 90 bridge and Coastal Highway was the most recent of the OCDC’s major public art programs.

Public art has big role in OCDC resort agenda The Ocean City Development Corporation has been involved in providing public art in the downtown area and throughout Ocean City. From sculptures, such as the white marlin water feature at the Route 50 bridge entrance, painted utility boxes and wall murals, the OCDC Public Art Committee has many successes. These public art projects add great cultural, social and economic value to our resort. They humanize the built environment and are freely accessible. The OCDC Public Art Program holds a strong place in the OCDC’s revitalization efforts and these artistic works have become an integral part of the resort’s landscape. The OCDC is a not-for-profit organization and it relies on private contributions to fund its public art projects. These enhancements to our community require commitment and investment from our residents, businesses and visitors to bring them to fruition. The newest addition to the OCDC’s Public Art Program has been unveiled and the OCDC is requesting public support.

“Dance of the Dolphins,” is a majestic, bronze statue of three dolphins supported by a bronze wave that graces the southwest corner of Route 90 and Coastal Highway. The dedication of the statue was held on April 14, 2015 in recognition of National Dolphin Day. The 16-foot sculpture is another signature piece designed and created by sculptor David Turner of Turner Sculptures in Onley, Va. It is centered in a beautiful, parklike setting designed by Becker Morgan Group Architects. There are various donation levels for giving toward this public art project. The donations can be to recognize one self, business, or to memorialize a family member. A number of events and activities are planned for visitors to our beaches throughout the summer months to bring awareness to the “Dance of the Dolphins” Campaign and to provide educational resources about these endangered mammals. For more information, visit the website ocdolphins.com, the Facebook page OC “Dance of the Dolphins,” or contact OCDC at 410289-7739.

Plein air, quick draw event brings arts to downtown

Drive in disguise in Oct.

Part of annual vintage tag rally on Boardwalk

For the fifth year, residents and visitors with a vintage Ocean City license plates will be allowed to ride down the Boardwalk during the annual OC Vintage License Plate Rally on Saturday, Oct. 24. Continuing with the "Drive in Disguise" theme, anyone wishing to decorate his or her car also will be allowed to ride down the Boardwalk. “Folks really got into the swing of the event last year,” said Mayor Rick Meehan. “The Downtown Association is to be congratulated for stepping up to sponsor this event and for bringing the Halloween theme into it.” Decorated cars will join the OC vintage plate cars during the rally, which will roll-off at 27th Street beginning at 3 p.m. Vehicles will drive around the pier and then off the Boardwalk at the inlet parking lot, where prizes will be awarded and a group photo will be taken for all vehicles and drivers.

Page 17

Last year’s winning decorated entry.

In addition, various local organizations will have information booths set up and a DJ will play music. Other festivities are in the works so stay tuned. There is a $25 registration fee for non-vintage license plate participants and those vehicles must be decorated. There is no fee for those with an Ocean City "vintage" license plate (these are not vintage car tags but the special Ocean City plate). Proof of insurance is required for all participants. Proceeds from the event will be used for prizes and event costs. Registration forms are available at www.downtownassociation.net. For additional information, contact Nancy Howard at 443-235-4405 or e-mail neffiehoward@comcast.net. If you do not have a city vintage plate and would like to obtain one visit www.oceancitymd.gov.

The Art League of Ocean City invites the public to view art being created on the spot during the 10th annual plein air event — “Artists Paint OC” — Aug. 6- 9 at picturesque locations around the resort. “En plein air” is a French expression that means “in the open air,” used to describe the art of painting outdoors. Plein air events take place wherever the scenery is inspirational, artists congregate to paint it, and watchers gather to see the painters make art right before their eyes. The annual event brings in 50 plein air painters and features many popular regional artists as well as painters from as far away as California and Chicago. Artists will paint all day on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 6-7, from 9 a.m. until dark. A map showing approximately where the artists are painting will be posted at the Ocean City Center for the Arts at 502 94th Street, bayside. Artists also may post their locations on the Facebook page, “Artists Paint OC,” and watchers are encouraged to friend the page to receive updates. On Saturday, Aug. 8, the artists will paint outside from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., then return to the Arts Center

7 Somerset Street, OC

to prepare for judging and the Wet Paint Sale that evening. The artists will select one of their works to be entered into the gallery show judged by Laura Era of Easton’s Troika Gallery, and the Art League will award prizes. The Wet Paint Sale from 6-8 p.m. is open to the public — in 2014 drawing a crowd of more than 300 — and an opportunity to collect original artwork of local scenes at affordable prices. The Wet Paint Sale continues at the Arts Center on Sunday, Aug. 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday morning’s Quick Draw Contest wraps up the event. Artists will gather in downtown Ocean City on the Boardwalk at South Division Street and paint against the clock from 9-11 a.m. when their work will be judged and winners announced. The Ocean City Development Corporation sponsors the Quick Draw Contest. The plein air artwork will be on exhibit at the Ocean City Center for the Arts through the end of August. More information about the event is available at www.artleagueofoceancity.org or by calling 410-5249433. The Ocean City Center for the Arts is the home of the Art League of Ocean City.
