Downtown Ocean City always has fun things to do Downtown and Boardwalk places to be for shopping, dining and special events
Looking for something to do while in Ocean City? You can always find something fun and interesting in downtown Ocean City, with its attractions for all ages and interests, such as amusements, museums, parks and water activities. In addition, the downtown has a variety of hotels and restaurants. Downtown Ocean City and its Boardwalk are home to a great number of restaurants and other food establish-
ments. And don’t forget our famous Maryland blue crabs. Along with the eateries on the Boardwalk, other popular options can be found along the bayside and streets of the downtown area. Whether you’re looking for a quiet crowd or a party crowd, you don’t have to look far when you’re downtown. Another major draw of the downtown area is its number of hotels and motels offering a variety of styles and rates. Some of these have served Ocean City visitors for generations, while others are quite new. In addition, plenty of accommoda-
tions are available for daily, weekly, seasonal, or year-round rental. While the Boardwalk businesses provide a multitude of retail goods to visitors, from sweets to graphic-Ts, businesses off the Boardwalk offer more of a specialty character. The next time you are in the downtown area, be sure to stop in for some shopping. Here are several other reasons to visit Downtown Ocean City, whether it’s during the offseason or in the height of summer: • Special events • parks and open spaces (Sunset Park, Somerset Plaza, the Inlet Park and the Ocean Bowl Skate Park, the old-
est public operating skate park in the country) • Amusements and arcades • Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum • Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum • Water sports and fishing • Bicycles and Segways • Historic buildings • Public Art. The next time you are downtown, take advantage of the many things to do and see on and off the Boardwalk. (The OCDC is a nonprofit organization charged with revitalizing Downtown Ocean City. For more information or to become a member of the OCDC, visit our website at www.ocdc.org or call at 410-2897739.)

s the Backshore team gears up for it’s fourth summer, the crew is finding that more and more customers are returning each year. The iconic painted VW van has turned the brewery into the perfect vacation photo opportunity. Tourists line up every day in the summer to sit inside the van for photos, while sipping the awardwinning beers that have skyrocketed to popularity. Brewmaster Adam Shockley brews on a daily basis and is constantly experimenting with new flavors and styles. Backshore has six beers on tap that are always changing. Whatever your taste in beer, you will find one to fall in love with at Backshore. Styles range from complex, satisfying the most finicky of beer geeks, to mild summer ales used as ‘gateway’ flavors to lure the masses into the craft beer world. Samples of all six craft beers are served in skateboard flights that come in various colors. In addition to the ever-changing six taps of craft beer, Backshore Brewing Co. has crafted up something new this year: Hoop Tea, a wildly popularr alcoholic tea drink. It is brewed with purified water, tea leaves, organic cane sugar and naturally fermented alcohol. The tea is 4 percent alcohol and almost entirely organic.

Backshore is distributing two flavors this summer: white mango and a classic, southern-style sweet lemon that you can find at any of your favorite bars & restaurants in Maryland. A wider variety of teas is available at the brewery for you to try or take home in a growler. The brewery also serves up more than just drinks; a full menu is availabble, as well. Favorites include homemade specialty personal pizzas and colossal pretzels – a homemade soft pretzel bigger than your head topped with delicious crab dip and various other dipping sauces. Backshore Brewing Co. defines the true essence of the beach lifestyle. “We work harrd, but never serious. We brew our beer in the salty air, with our toes in the sand and the sun on our faces,” says owner Danny Robinson. Locals will tell you that to get the full Ocean City beach experiences, you have to visit Backshore Brewing Co. this summer.

Boardwalk Committee stays busy
Shakespeare by Brown Box at Sunset Park
It does a great deal more than most people realize
Trickery, romance, poison, sword fights: play has it all
The Boardwalk Committee of the Ocean City Development Corporation receives little fanfare for its many efforts and projects. This is one of 11 committees of the OCDC and is a volunteer-based effort with its 12 members. The OCDC is a not-for-profit organization charged with revitalizing downtown Ocean City and the Boardwalk is part of this effort. The committee evolved from the former Boardwalk Development Association (BDA) that was instrumental in advocating for a new and improved Boardwalk for Ocean City in the 1990s. This new Boardwalk was reconstructed and improved in 1999. About 2012, the OCDC formed its Boardwalk Committee that consisted of the board members from the BDA and transferred this group’s responsibilities to this new committee. Next time you are on the Boardwalk, you will probably walk past one Continued on page 14
The Brown Box Theatre Project will present a free production of Shakespeare’s “Cymbeline” at Sunset Park in downtown Ocean City on Sunday, Sept. 11. “Cymbeline, King of Britain” is brimming with forbidden romance, mistaken identities, jealousy, vile trickery, poison, disguises and epic sword fights. Cymbeline delicately blends tragedy, comedy and romance into an enchanting and unforgettable Shakespearean fairytale. This will be the sixth year that Brown Box Theatre Project has performed at Sunset Park. This play is directed by Kyler Taustin. Play performance will start at 7:30 p.m. No reservations required. Sunset Park is located along South Philadelphia near the inlet, just south of the U.S Coast Guard Station. Committee keeps eyes on boards continued from page 13 of the six-foot-tall Boardwalk business directory panels. There are seven of these directory panels on the Boardwalk at various locations, with the furthest north directory panel located at the 27th Street comfort station, and the furthest south directory panel located on the Tram Building at South 1st Street. The Boardwalk business directory lists the 265 names and locations of every retail, food/beverage, lodging, and attraction located on the 2.5-mile length of the Boardwalk. In addition, it lists the four comfort stations on the Boardwalk. These directory panels are well used by the general public. The Boardwalk Committee updates this listing in June of each year. Another task the OCDC Boardwalk
Committee undertakes is the review of outdoor displays for Boardwalk businesses. There are approximately 60 Boardwalk businesses that renew their outdoor displays each spring. The Boardwalk Committee, working with Town of Ocean City staff, handles this task. The Boardwalk Committee, through the OCDC, continues to promote and discuss various items related to the Boardwalk. Each Labor Day, it holds an employee appreciation event that recognizes the efforts of the Town’s Public Works Department, which maintains the Boardwalk and keeps it one of the best boardwalks in the country. You can be assured that as new Boardwalk issues arise, this committee will continue to advocate for the best interests of the Boardwalk.
Earl Cantine points to the name of his businesses, Big Island Airbrush, on the new Boardwalk business directories.

Public invited to watch artists paint OC
The Art League of Ocean City invites the public to view art being created on the spot during the 11th annual plein air event — “Artists Paint OC” — Aug. 11-14. The public is also invited to view and collect the art during the Wet Paint Sale on Saturday, Aug. 13 at the Ocean City Center for the Arts. “En plein air” is a French expression that means “in the open air” and is used to describe the art of painting outdoors. Plein air events take place wherever the scenery is inspirational, artists congregate to paint it, and watchers gather to see the painters make art right before their eyes. Baltimore Magazine recently listed “Artists Paint OC” in their “50 Reasons Why We Love Our Beach.” The annual event brings in 50 plein air painters and features many popular regional artists as well as painters from around the country. Artists will paint on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at picturesque spots around the resort. The Art League’s Facebook page will list some locations. On Saturday, Aug. 13, the artists will bring their best work to the Ocean City Center for the Arts to be judged and to participate in the Wet Paint Sale that evening. The Wet Paint Sale from 6-8 p.m. is free and open to the public — in 2015 it drew a crowd of more than 300 — and is an opportunity to collect original artwork of local scenes at affordable prices. The Wet Paint Sale continues at the Arts Center on Sunday, Aug. 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday morning’s Quick Draw Contest wraps up the event. Artists will gather in downtown Ocean City and paint against the clock from 9-11 a.m. At 11 a.m., they will return to the Boardwalk at South Division Street, where their work will be judged and winners announced. The public may purchase the art off-the-easel until 1 p.m. The
Winners of last year’s “quick draw” contest show what they can do in just two hours.
Ocean City Development Corp. sponsors the Quick Draw Contest. The plein air artwork will be on exhibit at the Ocean City Center for the Arts through the end of August. Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan believes many visitors are surprised to learn the resort has a vibrant and active arts community, and the annual plein air event reinforces that awareness. “I cannot think of a more picturesque setting than the scenic views of Ocean City to inspire their creativity,” Meehan said. “I look forward to watching these events grow as our residents and visitors realize that art is alive in Ocean City.” More information about the event is available online at www.artleagueofoceancity.org or by call-

“Drive in Disguise” participants from previous years have ranged from those taking the highly amusing route to those who enjoy the creepy approach.
Sixth ‘Drive in Disguise’ Boardwalk parade in Oct. For the sixth year, residents and visitors with a vintage Ocean City license plates will be allowed to ride down the Boardwalk during the annual OC Vintage License Plate Rally, which will take place Saturday, Oct. 22. Continuing with the Drive in Disguise theme, participants wishing to decorate their cars also will be allowed to ride down the Boardwalk. “The rally has grown to include marching bands and walking units,” said Mayor Rick Meehan. “The Halloween theme has really broadened the event. There’s a real competition in decorating the cars.” Decorated cars will join the OC vintage plate cars during the rally, which will roll-off at 27th Street at 3 p.m. Vehicles will drive off the Boardwalk at the inlet parking lot. The public will be able to vote for their favorite decorated car. Each vote is $1. A People’s Choice trophy as well as additional trophies will be awarded. In addition, various local organizations will have information booths set up and a DJ will play music. Several
local businesses will offer a 15 percent discount to participants for the weekend. “We are still working on other possible components to the day,” said event organizer Nancy Howard. “Last year we added bicycles. The entire event is an attempt to create a weekend that will bring visitors to join in the fun.” There is a $25 donation fee for non-vintage license plate participants and those vehicles and bicycles must be decorated. There is no fee for those with Ocean City “vintage” license plates (these are not vintage car tags but the special Ocean City plate). Proof of insurance is required for all participants. Proceeds from the event will be benefit the Ocean City Downtown Association. Registration forms are available at www.downtownassociation.net. For additional information, contact Nancy Howard at 443-235-4405 or email neffiehoward@comcast.net. If you do not have a city vintage plate and would like to obtain one, visit the city web site at www.oceancitymd.gov.
