Start your Ocean City experience with an early morning walk, run or bike ride along the Boardwalk and downtown side streets. Mornings are a fun time to explore all the unique shops and take time to admire the magnificent scenery. Biking is allowed on the Boardwalk every day through Sept. 4 from 2 a.m. to noon of the same
day. Beginning Sept. 5, with the exception of Sunfest weekend, biking is allowed at any time of day. Relax on our beautiful beach all day. Lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., seven days a week all along the ocean shoreline until Sept. 25. Keep your feet in the sand until the lifeguard is in the stand. If you’re up for more lively water adventures, boating, parasailing and personal watercraft rentals, as well as fishing and nature charters continue throughout the late summer and fall. Head on over to the bay side between Dorchester and North 1st Street. The OC Life-Saving Station Museum offers sum-
mer educational programs every weekday through Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. and an aquarium feeding at 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays. Learn about surfmen, beach safety, knot-tying, sharks and more. And, speaking of sharks, don’t miss the Shark Hunt on the Boardwalk. Aug. 19-26. The Henry Hotel on the corner of South Baltimore Avenue and South Division Street was opened in 1927 by Charles T. Henry, a Black businessman from Berlin.
Henry Hotel tourism pioneer for African-American visitors The Henry Hotel in South Ocean City has given rise to many stories — some fact some fiction. But despite these inconsistencies, the Henry Hotel was named an African-American heritage site on the lower Eastern Shore on May 3, 2007. The following is a well-documented history. Charles T. Henry, a Black businessman from Berlin, opened “Henry’s Colored Hotel” in 1927. He operated his hotel in a building at the southwest corner of South Baltimore Avenue and South Division Street that he had purchased in late 1926 from local fisherman Thomas Savage. The building was erected in 1916 by James W. Lynch to replace an earlier structure that burned down in 1915. Mr. Savage acquired the property in 1917. The Henry Hotel and Henry’s other boarding house on Somerset Street were two of five establishments in Ocean City at that time that catered exclusively to black seasonal workers and occasional black visitors. Of these five buildings, only two are still standing: the Henry Hotel on South Division Street and the smaller boarding house on Somerset Street. Henry expanded his hotel in 1937 with the addition of the south wing. Following his death in 1942, his widow, Louisa, and one of their sons continued operating the hotel. After Louisa died in 1952, her son, Charles W. Henry, sold the hotel the following year to black nightclub operator Joseph Weatherly from Princess Anne. In addition to running his nightclub, the “Moon Glow,” Weatherly was also a major player in the illegal numbers racket that flourished on the lower Eastern Shore in the 1950s. The Henry Hotel suffered a decline in its reputation under Weatherly’s brief ownership. Dogged by various criminal charges, he defaulted on his mortgage on the Henry Hotel in 1956.
The mortgage holders, two white businessmen from the Eastern Shore, hired Pearl Bonner, originally from Oriole, Maryland, and then living in Baltimore, to run the hotel for them. The two men executed a “lease-toown” arrangement with Mrs. Bonner. She acquired title to the property in 1973. Mrs. Bonner was not new to Ocean City. A report from 1932 shows her residing next door to the Roadside Hotel, located on Worcester Street at the foot of the old auto bridge, that was owned by Herman Levy, a Baltimore tailor, and rented to black proprietors. There is evidence that suggests she was acquainted with Charles Henry and might have operated a store in the building where she lived. Mrs. Bonner continued to open the Henry Hotel to guests until the late 1990s. After that, she occasionally welcomed friends and family at the former hotel. She died in 2003, and the hotel passed to her three daughters. Efforts are presently underway to assist the current owners with their efforts to restore and preserve this historic landmark in Ocean City. With the Henry Hotel as the focal point, it is hoped we can tell the African-American story in Ocean City as well as the surrounding area. Several organizations have stepped up to help in this effort. We are indebted to the Humphreys Foundation, the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, the Ocean City Development Corporation and the Ocean City Museum Society. We need help telling the story of this important building. We are reaching out to anyone who might have a relationship with the Henry Hotel. If you or your family have a story about the hotel or an artifact you would be willing to share, please contact Nancy Howard at neffiehoward@comcast.net.

It’s artist vs. artist in Ocean City in mid-Aug. You’ll see them in their yellow hats and paint-spattered clothes, in front of an easel daubing colors on a canvas. Fifty artists from across the region will be working in iconic locations around Ocean City and Assateague from Aug. 10-14, vying to win the top prize in the annual art competition. And you’re welcome – and encouraged - to watch them create and even buy what you’re watching them paint. It’s artist vs. artist every August for 17 years when the Art League of
Ocean City hosts “Artists Paint OC: A Plein Air Event.” For five days, the 50 artists compete for the cash prizes and prestige as they spread out across the area to paint famous scenes. These 50 artists are professionals; many are award winners in multiple competitions. This year, there are two opportunities to buy the original art. The public is invited to the “Wet Paint Sales” on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 5-8 p.m. and on Sunday, Aug. 14, from 1-3 p.m. Both sales are held at the water-

front Ocean City Center for the Arts, 502 94th St. bayside, and both are free to attend. Every painting is oneof-a-kind, framed, and ready to hang. Prices are affordable, too. “If you’re looking for a permanent and unique memory of your time in Ocean City, this is an opportunity to find a treasure no one else but you will have,” Rina Thaler, executive director of the Art League, said. “This event only happens once a year, and our arts center is the only place you’ll find literally hundreds of original paintings to choose from.” The “Wet Paint Sales” at the arts center are a chance to mix and mingle with the artists, and enjoy light refreshments, live music, and a cash bar. The juror for this year’s Artists Paint OC event is Crystal Moll, Baltimore gallery owner and an awardwinning plein air painter herself. Moll will jury the artwork and award the cash prizes to the winning artists and has donated one of her original paintings for a raffle to benefit the nonprofit Ocean City Art League. Raffle tickets are available at the arts center anytime as well as during the sales. The easiest time and place to watch the artists paint is on the Boardwalk on Sunday morning, when they’re confined to the immediate
area near South Division Street. Many will be wearing bright yellow hats to make them easy to find. In just two hours, from 9-11 a.m., the artists will race to complete a painting of an iconic Boardwalk scene, frame it, and run it to the arts center on 94th Street. Moll will judge the paintings, with cash prizes awarded by the Ocean City Development Corp. The art goes up for sale to the public at 1 p.m., while the paint is still wet. “We hope to see new faces this year,” Thaler said. “We welcome everyone to come and experience the excitement of these fun-filled summer art events.” “We also want to give a big shoutout to the sponsors who support this event and the arts in Ocean City: Emily and Paul Schwab, Peter Glenville Foundation, Laura Jenkins, Blue Water Development, Mapleton Farm/Mechelle and Charles Nichols, Shore United Bank, Reese Cropper, Barbara Frankfort-Kollander Patrick, Maryland’s Coast, and the OCDC, as well as our in-kind sponsors, The Atlantic Hotel of Berlin and J&M Meat Market,” she continued. Follow the artists on Facebook “Artists Paint OC: A Plein Air Event.” Information is available at www.ArtLeagueofOceanCity.org or 410-524-9433.
