The 2013 Ocean City Dew Tour Beach Championships recorded an attendance of approximately 103,000 people. The 2014 event was scheduled to kick off with practice sessions on Wednesday. Competitions started Thursday and will run through Sunday evening on the beach in downtown Ocean City, just north of the pier.
THIS IS IT! Dew Tour 2014 edition OC’s biggest sports event of year By Lisa Capitelli Managing Editor (June 27, 2014) After months of anticipation, the wait is finally over as the Dew Tour Beach Championships have returned to Ocean City. Last week, workers began constructing a skateboard bowl, vertical ramp, and a BMX park, along with the rest of the venue that will contain the “Dew Tour Experience” booths, activities and concert stage on the beach, adjacent to the Boardwalk, just north of the pier in downtown Ocean City. “To see how they erect a stadium like that in such a short amount of time is incredible,” Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan said last week. Working day and night, the crews completed the blocks-wide “Dew Tour Experience” earlier this week — just in time for athletes to get in some practice sessions, which were slated for Wednesday. Competitions were scheduled to kick off Thursday, June
26, and will continue through Sunday. “When we set out to find a ‘beach’ locale for the Dew Tour, everything came together in Ocean City. The relationships we have with the mayor’s office, city council and all the city departments help bring to life what has become our biggest single event to date, with record attendance,” said Eric Grilly, president of Alli Sports, a division of the NBC Sports Group. Alli Sports is a media, event and branded content company that specializes in action, adventure and adrenaline based sports. “We also love fitting into the overall cultural landscape of Ocean City, utilizing the natural environment to incorporate events like surf, skateboard bowl and the skate shop battle: city vs. city, which draws competitors from across the region, into the competition,” he said. This is the fourth consecutive year the Dew Tour will host competitions
in the resort. During its Ocean City debut in 2011, the Pantech Open set a Dew Tour attendance record by drawing approximately 73,000 fans during its four-day run in the resort, July 21-24 – its first beachfront venue. That record was broken in 2012 as an estimated 93,000 spectators came out to the beach for the Dew Tour Pantech Beach Championships, Aug. 16-19. The Dew Tour, with its world-class athletes, returned to Ocean City for the third year in 2013, and again, a new attendance record was set. Over the course of five days, June 19-23, an estimated 103,000 fans attended the Dew Tour Beach Championships. It was the first time the Dew Tour hosted more than 100,000 attendees at a single event. “We are thrilled to welcome the Dew Tour back in Ocean City for their inaugural 10th anniversary event,” said Jessica Waters, Ocean City’s communications manager. “Last year, the Beach Championships in Ocean City brought record-breaking crowds and I believe there is no better place for extreme sports fans to celebrate the last decade of the Dew Tour than the beautiful beach and
Boardwalk in Ocean City.” When asked if he was looking forward to bringing the Dew Tour back to Ocean City, Grilly said “absolutely.” “[This year] marks the 10th anniversary of the Dew Tour, so it’s a very exciting year overall for us, and we love the thought of kicking it off in Ocean City … After the success of our first three events in Ocean City, it was a natural decision for us to return for 2014,” he said. “Last year in Ocean City we saw our highest attended event in Dew Tour history with more than 103,000 people and [we] are hoping to sustain the excitement coming into 2014.” Events scheduled for the Ocean City Beach Championships are: Skate Vert, Skate Bowl and Skate Street Session, BMX Park, BMX Vert and BMX Street Session, Shop Battle: City vs. City and Surf Shop Showdown. “This is the first year we’ve updated our concrete bowl, so fans have the chance to experience the first time the athletes ride the new setup and create their new runs,” Grilly said. “With the best names in the sports confirmed for the Dew Tour, See DEW Page 4

Dew Tour’s infectious energy appeals to even non-skaters Continued from Page 3 crowd favorites like vert and BMX park are sure to astound once again.” In addition to the competitions, the Dew Tour will feature free live concerts on the beach starting tonight, Friday, with Cage the Elephant, a rock brand from Bowling Green, Ky. best known for its singles “Shake Me Down” and “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked.” Opening for Cage the Elephant will be SKATERS. DJproducer GRiZ will headline Saturday’s concert on the beach, with opening act heRobust. “For five days, we’re taking over the beach just north of the pier. The Dew Tour is a great family-friendly event, with free general admission, and plenty to experience – you get the chance to watch inspiring athletes compete at the top level of their sport, and in our Dew Tour Experience, you also have the opportunity to meet them and get autographs, as well as play games, win great prizes and interact with our partner brands,”Grilly said. “Add in our evening events – a surf competition, and live concerts Friday and Saturday – and you can find something for everyone at the Beach Championships.” Waters said she is “extremely excited” about the Dew Tour returning to Ocean City. “I have never participated in extreme sports myself, but I must admit, something about the energy of watching the BMX and skateboarding athletes compete that instantly makes you a fan of the sport,” she said. “Not to mention, watching the exciting competitions unfold with a backdrop like the Ocean City beach and Boardwalk makes the thrill of the event even more exciting.” With two small children and a young nephew who skateboards, Waters said she plans on attending many competitions.
“The Dew Tour is really a family event and not only do the kids enjoy the excitement but the parents get really into the event as well,” she said. “There is an energy about the Dew Tour beach competitions that is hard to explain unless you have experienced it before…it’s invigorating, exciting and always a memorable event for our residents and visitors.” Susan Jones, executive director of the Ocean City Hotel-Motel-Restaurant Association, is also looking forward to the return of the Dew Tour. “Having two teenage daughters, I’m sure we will make it down to see the action,” she said last week. Meehan also plans on watching several competitions. “I enjoy going. They’re world-class athletes and it’s amazing what they can do,” he said. The 2014 Dew Tour will be presented on NBC, NBCSN and DewTour.com/live on the NBC Sports Live Extra platform. Dew Tour’s dedicated digital platform will stream live competitions and bring consumers exclusive Dew Tour action, interviews and behindthe-scenes access on desktops, mobile device and tablets.

New competition courses make OC debut Athletes say events, beach, crowds give resort venue greater overall appeal
By Lisa Capitelli Managing Editor (June 27, 2014) Athletes from around the world have made their way to Ocean City for the Dew Tour Beach Championships, which kicked off with practice sessions on Wednesday. Competitions were scheduled to start yesterday, Thursday, and will run through Sunday evening. Events scheduled for the Ocean City Beach Championships include Skate Vert, Skate Bowl and Skate Street Session, BMX Park, BMX Vert and BMX Street Session, Shop Battle: City vs. City and Surf Shop Showdown. The Dew Tour unveiled competition course designs earlier this month. The BMX Park course has been updated for this year. It was designed by builder Aaron Bostrom with endorsements from athletes Dennis Enarson, Garrett Reynolds and Ryan Nyquist, the 2013 Dew Tour Beach Championships champion. They provided input on the final layout of the course. Nyquist captured his first Dew
Tour BMX Park title in Ocean City last year. He said the competition will be very tough this year. “It’s one of the most progressive and competitive disciplines in our sport. And they’ve only invited the best of the best, so you know you need to be on your game if you want to place well,” Nyquist said. To come out on top, Nyquist said it will take “difficult tricks, good flow throughout the course, and creative lines to link all your tricks together. It has to be a total package.” Competing on the beach rather than inside a facility, Nyquist said athletes must deal with the elements. “There’s humidity, heat and sometimes wind. I try to pace myself and keep cool and hydrated as much as possible so I don’t get worn out too quickly. Also, lots of sun block,” he said. When asked if he has any new tricks he plans to unveil in Ocean City, Nyquist said “I wish I did,” followed by a “ha-ha!” “I guess I’ll have to bring out a few oldies but goodies,” he said. Nyquist, of San Jose, Ca., is looking forward to coming back to Ocean City. What he said he enjoys about the town is that “there’s so many options for things to do and see. There’s obviously the beach, but there’s shopping, great food and amusement

Bucky Lasek ...“I’ll have my hands full as usual.”
park rides. Plenty of fun to be had.” Nyquist said he likes being able to “take a break from riding and literally be at the beach. There’s no better way to cool down then a quick dip in the ocean.” The Skate Bowl, which debuted in Ocean City three years ago, also has a new design this year. It was designed by skateboard legend Chris Miller, with input from skater and designer Charlie Wilkins and Baltimore native, skateboarder Bucky Lasek.
The bowl has a distinct, new shape and the addition of a clam shell feature. Lasek will compete in both the Skate Vert and Skate Bowl events. “[Competition will] be tough in both Bowl and Vert where everyone is ripping,” he said. “Doing two disciplines in one weekend takes a lot, not to mention all the press. I’ll have my hands full as usual.” Lasek said he enjoys “how vibrant and stoked Ocean City is to have us back every year.”

‘You really have to manage your energy’

When asked how competing on the beach differs from an indoor arena, Lasek said “it’s like unleashing a caged animal back into the wild. Being outside on the beach is great. I’ll enjoy the sunshine, fresh air and sand beneath my feet.” Lasek, who grew up skating in the resort, said his whole family looks forward to the Ocean City Dew Tour. “We use it as a personal vacation spot every year,” he said. “I love eating crabs, Fisher’s popcorn and having a great time at Jolly Roger
[Amusement Park].” Lasek won the Skate Vert contest last year. He finished second behind Brazilian Pedro Barros in the Skate Bowl competition. “It’s always a pleasure to be out here in Ocean City with all the crowd cheering you on and having be able to skate this amazing contest and this amazing bowl with all the skaters,” Barros said after last year’s Skate Bowl victory. Barros will look to defend his title this year. Like Lasek, Bob Burnquist, of Rio
de Janeiro, is also slated to compete in both the Skate Bowl and Skate Vert competitions, which, depending on the weather, present their own special challenges. Competing on the beach, athletes have to deal with a variety of factors, including sand, Burnquist said. “It’s also pretty hot and humid, but I’m used to that,” he said. “Just gotta work harder [and] make sure we drink enough water. Bowl skating takes a lot out of you. Add vert to the mix and you have to really manage
your energy.” Battling the top world-class athletes, Burnquist said “competing is never easy.” To finish ahead of his competitors, Burnquist said it will take “a miracle and a lot of skateboarding.” “[I’m] gonna skate and see what comes out,” he said. “Tricks are emotional...whatever goes, goes. I’ll just go and have a great time on my skateboard.” What Burnquist said he loves about competing in Ocean City is “skating with all the guys at practice.” “That’s usually the best part of any competition. It’s a wild town and the energy is a little too much for me,” he said. “I do love the fans that come out every day. I get to sit down at the Toyota booth and meet quite a few of them on my autograph sessions, and that has been a great part of coming out to OC. The fans are worth all the madness around an event like this.” Jamie Bestwick, of Nottingham, Great Britain, is going for his 10th BMX Vert Dew Tour championship. He is the only athlete to win the Dew Cup in the event since the Dew Tour’s inception 10 years ago. “I enjoy Ocean City every time I come around,” Bestwick said after winning his ninth title last year.

Dew Tour becomes OC’s signature event Aside from revenue, resort also benefits from media coverage around globe
By Lisa Capitelli Managing Editor (June 27, 2014) There is no doubt the Dew Tour Beach Championships has a positive impact on the Town of Ocean City. “[Dew Tour] has become one of our signature events,” Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan said last week. “A lot of people are looking forward to it…Many people plan their vacations around when Dew Tour will be here.” This is the fourth year the Dew Tour will host skateboarding and BMX competitions in the resort. During its Ocean City debut–its first beachfront venue–in 2011, the Pantech Open, held July 21-24, set a Dew Tour attendance record by drawing approximately 73,000. That record was shattered in 2012 as an estimated 93,000 spectators came out for the Dew Tour Pantech Beach Championships, Aug. 16-19. The Dew Tour returned to Ocean City in 2013, and again, a new attendance record was set. It was the first time the Dew Tour had ever hosted more than 100,000 attendees at a single event. Over the course of five days, June 19-23, an estimated
103,000 fans visited the Dew Tour Beach Championships. According to the Demoflush statistics, which uses wastewater flows to estimate the city’s population, approximately 258,809 people were in town (Saturday and Sunday average) during Dew Tour weekend last year. Many of those people stayed in Ocean City’s hotels and motels, ate in restaurants and shopped in the town’s stores. But Ocean City doesn’t just benefit from the number of people who come to town for the event. Ocean City also gains national and international attention on television. The 2014 Dew Tour will be presented on NBC, NBCSN and DewTour.com/live on the NBC Sports Live Extra platform. “To see Ocean City on TV and the way it is depicted is fantastic,” Meehan said. According to the Dew Tour, “Thanks to greater distribution platforms, across international television, digital and distribution partners, including Globostat (Brazil) and TVA (Canada), we are able to bring the 2014 Dew Tour Beach Championships partners and athletes to 103 countries and more than 215 million households worldwide.” “The media coverage surrounding the event and the footage you see on NBC Sports provides great exposure for Ocean City,” said Susan Jones, executive director of the Ocean City Hotel-Motel-

Restaurant Association. “The Town of Ocean City benefits in many ways from the Dew Tour. Of course, there is the revenue that is generated by the visitors who come to watch the event and the millions of impressions from the international television exposure, but mostly, it is the memories that are made by the people who come and experience the Beach Championships that they will never forget,” said
Jessica Waters, Ocean City’s communications manager. “The Dew Tour brings an exciting energy to Ocean City, with fun, lively and youthful events and concerts. When people arrive and see the extraordinary footprint of the Dew Tour, they are amazed. It is dazzling and I think being able to offer that feeling is something that is the largest benefit from the Dew Tour,” she said.
