Always plenty of fun things to do in downtown Ocean City Downtown and Boardwalk places to be for shopping, dining and special events
Looking for something to do while in Ocean City? Offering attractions for all ages and interests, such as amusements, museums, parks and water activities, downtown Ocean City always offers visitors something fun and interesting to find. In addition to all its attractions, there is a wide variety of hotels and restaurants to fit your needs. Downtown Ocean City and its Boardwalk are home to a great num-
ber of restaurants and other food establishments. And don’t forget the famous Maryland blue crabs. Along with the eateries right on the Boardwalk, other popular options can be found along the bayside and streets of the downtown area of the resort. Whether you’re looking for a quiet crowd or a party crowd, you don’t have to look far. And public art can be found throughout the downtown area. Another major draw of the downtown area is its number of hotels and motels that offer a variety of styles and rates. Some of these establishments have served Ocean City visitors for generations, while others are
quite new. In addition, plenty of accommodations are available for daily, weekly, seasonal, or year-round rental. While the Boardwalk businesses provide a multitude of retail goods to visitors, from sweets to graphic-tees, businesses off the Boardwalk offer more of a specialty character. The next time you are in the downtown area, make sure you stop in for some shopping. Here are several other reasons to visit downtown Ocean City, whether it’s during the offseason or in the height of summer: Special events, public art, plus amusements and arcades. In addi-
tion: parks and open space, such as Sunset Park, Somerset Plaza, the Inlet Park, and the Ocean Bowl Skate Park, the oldest public operating skate park in the country. There also is the Ocean City LifeSaving Station Museum, Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, water sports and fishing, bicycles and Segways, historic buildings. The next time you are downtown, take advantage of the many things to do and see on and off the Boardwalk. (The OCDC is a nonprofit organization charged with revitalizing downtown Ocean City. Public invited to watch ‘Artists Paint OC’ Eleventh annual plein air event Aug. 11-14 gives art lovers chance to buy work The Art League of Ocean City invites the public to view art being created on the spot during the 11th annual plein air event — “Artists Paint OC” — Aug. 11-14. The public is also invited to view and collect the art during the Wet Paint Sale on Saturday, Aug. 13 at the Ocean City Center for the Arts. “En plein air” is a French expression that means “in the open air,” used to describe the art of painting outdoors. Plein air events take place wherever the scenery is inspirational, artists congregate to paint it, and watchers gather to see the painters make art right before their eyes. Baltimore Magazine recently listed “Artists Paint OC” in its “50 Reasons Why We Love Our Beach.” The annual event brings in 50 plein air painters and features many popular regional artists as well as painters from around the country. Artists will paint on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at picturesque spots around the resort. The Art League’s Facebook page will list some locations. On Saturday, Aug. 13, the artists will bring their best work to the Ocean City Center for the Arts on 94th Street to be judged and to participate in the “Wet Paint Sale” that evening.
The Wet Paint Sale from 6-8 p.m. is free and open to the public — in 2015 drawing a crowd of over 300 — and is an opportunity to collect original artwork of local scenes at affordable prices. The Wet Paint Sale continues at the Arts Center on Sunday, Aug. 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday morning’s Quick Draw Contest wraps up the event. Artists will gather in downtown Ocean City and paint against the clock from 9-11 a.m. At 11 a.m. they return to the Boardwalk at South Division Street, where their work will be judged and winners announced. The public may purchase the art off-the-easel until 1 p.m. The Ocean City Development Corp. sponsors the Quick Draw Contest.
The plein air artwork will be on exhibit at the Ocean City Center for the Arts through the end of August. Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan believes many visitors are surprised to learn the resort has a vibrant and active arts community, and the annual plein air event reinforces that awareness. “I cannot think of a more picturesque setting than the scenic views of Ocean City to inspire their creativity,” Meehan said. “I look forward to watching these events grow as our residents and visitors realize that art is alive in Ocean City.” More information about the event is available online at www.artleagueofoceancity.org or by calling the Ocean City Center for the Arts at 410-524-
9433. The Ocean City Center for the Arts at 502 94th Street is the home of the Art League of Ocean City, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing the visual arts to the community through education, exhibits, scholarship, programs and community art projects. Financial support comes primarily through membership dues from individuals and corporate sponsors. Funding for exhibits is also provided by the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, the Worcester County Arts Council, Maryland State Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, organizations dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive.
Discover Sunset Park this summer
Sunset Park, located along South Division Street between Philadelphia Avenue and the bay in downtown Ocean City, is Ocean City’s newest park which more people are discovering each year. It is located immediately south of the U.S. Coast Guard Station facility. Constructed in 2007, Sunset Park has evolved into a great venue for special events of all sizes and varieties. Free music, Shakespeare plays, movie nights and other events are on the 2016 sched-
ule. And it’s all free! This location was the original location of the railroad bridge entering Ocean City from Old Bridge Road in West Ocean City. This railroad bridge was destroyed by the 1933 storm that hit Ocean City. However, the new park is designed with railroad style features including the design of the restroom building, trellis, and the bricks located on the perimeter of the park that are from the original train station once located along S.
Philadelphia Avenue. This linear park contains a lighted entertainment stage, restrooms, environmental plaques, nice landscaping, and a short pier that provides fantastic views of the Bay. Sunset Park is highlighted by a 60’ tall tower that is lit at night and can be seen from the Route 50 Bridge as well as other downtown locations. For the past nine years, the Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC) and See SUNSET Page 15

Backshore Brewing Company’s popularity continues to soar New lineup of handcrafted brews, food and same fun staff make it a must-see Ocean City destination OCEAN CITY, MARYLAND
By BETHANY HOWE
s the Backshore team gears up for it’s fourth summer, the crew is finding that more and more customers are returning each year. The iconic painted VW van has turned the brewery into the perfect vacation photo opportunity. Tourists line up every day in the summer to sit inside the van for photos, while sipping the awardwinning beers that have skyrocketed to popularrity. Brewmaster Adam Shockley brews on a daily basis and is constantly experimenting with new flavors and styles. Backshore has six beers on tap that are always changing. Whatever your taste in beer, you will find one to fall in love with at Backshore. Styles range from complex, satisfying the most finicky of beer geeks, to mild summer ales used as ‘gateway’ flavors to lure the masses into the craft beer world. Samples of all six craft beers are served in skateboard flights that come in various colors. In addition to the ever-changing six taps of craft beer, Backshore Brewing Co. has crafted up something new this year: Hoop Tea, a wildly popular alcoholic tea drink. It is brewed with purified water, tea leaves, organic cane sugar and naturally fermented alcohol. The tea is 4 percent alcohol and almost entirely organic.
A
Backshore Brewing Co., located next to Hammerheads on the Beach, ser ves samples of its craft beer, also known as flights, in skateboards of various colors.
Backshore is distributing two flavors this summer: white mango and a classic, southern-style sweet lemon that you can find at any of your favorite bars & restaurants in Maryland. A wider variety of teas is available at the brewery for you to try or take home in a growler. The brewery also serves up more than just drinks; a full menu is available, as well. Favorites include homemade specialty personal pizzas and colossal pretzels – a homemade soft pretzel bigger than your head topped with delicious crab dip and various other dipping sauces. Backshore Brewing Co. defines the true essence of the beach lifestyle. “We work hard, but never serious. We brew our beer in the salty air, with our toes in the sand and the sun on our faces,” says owner Danny Robinson. Locals will tell you that to get the full Ocean City beach experiences, you have to visit Backshore Brewing Co. this summ mer.

The OCDC Façade Improvement Program provides financial assistance for business and property owners intending to renovate the exterior of their buildings in the downtown area. Funding is provided to the Ocean City Development Corporation by grants from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.
