Somerset Street’s appeal enhanced Extending the visual appeal and pedestrian nature of Somerset Plaza, located just west of the Boardwalk, has been the long-time goal of OCDC. This extension was completed in May 2022 and is located between S. Baltimore and S. Philadelphia Avenues. This former street segment, which runs 300 feet, had contained overhead utility wires and five-feet wide sidewalks. The Town of Ocean City and OCDC transformed this street segment into an attractive one-way (east-bound) thorofare for vehicles, 10 feet wide decorative sidewalks on each side, landscaping, rain gardens, and new streetlights. The overhead utility wires were buried. New water and storm drain pipes were installed, too, as well as new electric and communications conduits. The on-street parking remains as well as the private bus stop. This is the first phase of other improvements to this immediate area which will eventually include a new Public Safety facility on the southeast corner of S. Baltimore Avenue and Somerset Street, future private development that will serve as an anchor project attracting residents and visitors to the inner blocks of downtown Ocean City, as well as the addition of workforce housing. The Public Safety facility will contain the Ocean City Police Department bicycle patrol, at least 25 beds of workforce housing for OCPD employees, an enhanced bus stop, and public restrooms.

Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum takes look back
Train opened Ocean City to visitors By Sheri Reno Ocean City is just a few hours away from several metropolitan areas such as Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Other than an occasional traffic backup, the ride is pleasurable, as the trip takes travelers through scenic waterways and farmland. Those few hours on the road pass by rather quickly. However, getting to Ocean City wasn't always that easy. When Ocean City officially became a town in 1875, getting to the small seaside community took careful planning and many hours. The trip would begin by leaving Baltimore by one of the steamboats which would wind through the waterways until reaching the railroad yards of the Wicomico and Pocomoke Railroad in Salisbury. From Salisbury, the visitors would ride one of the wood-burning trains to the shores of the Sinepuxent Bay in West Ocean City. The all-day journey would finally end after the visitors crossed the bay by ferry or small boats to Ocean City. In 1876, a wooden railroad bridge was built over the Sinepuxent Bay. The bridge entered the town at South Division Street and ran up to a depot on Baltimore Avenue. When trains were not using the bridge, planks were placed between the ties so pedestrians, horses and buggies could cross the bridge. The rail system was instrumental to the success of Ocean City. Prior to the completion of the railroad bridge, only a handful of people visited the town. After the bridge was built, just the railroad alone would carry about 3,000 visitors each summer to the town. No one knows just how many people walked or rode across the bridge
OCEAN CITY LIFE-SAVING STATION MUSEUM
When the train station opened in Ocean City and the bridge was built across the Sinepuxent Bay, Ocean City’s summer visitor total soared — to about 3,000. The photos above were taken between 1910-1919.
on horses and buggies. And until the first automobile bridge was built, cars also used the railroad bridge. It was not unusual to have backups at the bridge, as traffic was allowed to travel in only one direction at a time. Therefore, everyone had to wait their turn to cross. By the turn-of-the-century, the rail line to Ocean City had been purchased by the Baltimore, Chesapeake and Atlantic (B.C. & A) Railway. The new railroad used steam engines instead of wood-burners. In time, the railroad became known as the "Black Cinders and Ashes" railroad as passengers would often get soot on their clothing from the black smoke and cinders that spewed out of the locomotive's stack. Vacationers no longer had to ride a steamboat from Baltimore to Salisbury to catch the train as the rail line had been extended west to Claiborne in Talbot County. A steamboat, the Cambridge, transported passengers across the Chesapeake Bay from Baltimore to the train station in Claiborne. This ride across the bay took about two hours. Once the steamer reached the train station at Claiborne, travelers would ride either the Lem Showell or the Baltimore Flyer all the way to
Ocean City. Depending on the number of stops made along the way, the train ride to Ocean City took about two or three hours. Although it was an ordeal, people would pack a big lunch and try to enjoy themselves. The journey to the beach was almost as much fun as a day at the beach. In 1916, Ocean City's first car bridge was built. The bridge entered the town at Worcester Street. The automobile soon replaced the train as the favorite mode of transportation to Ocean City. When the storm of 1933 destroyed the town's railroad bridge, there was not enough demand for train transportation to rebuild the bridge. Traveling to the resort by automobile was definitely more comfortable and less time consuming. However, the trip still needed careful planning. Visitors to Ocean City could take an auto route through Cecil County via Elkton or they could cross the Chesapeake Bay by ferry to the Eastern Shore. Three ferries regularly crossed the Chesapeake Bay. The trip across the bay took 40 minutes to two hours depending on which route was taken. Travelers who wanted to take the quickest and shortest route, rode on
the Harry W. Nice. This ferry carried 50 cars. Ferry travel was very popular among those heading for Ocean City and other Eastern Shore destinations. Ferry travel came to an end when the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (William Preston Lane Memorial Bridge) was built in 1952. Vacationers from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore could reach the beach in just a few hours. Prior to the completion of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, businesses in Ocean City could expect about 5,000 visitors on a busy summer weekend. Within 10 years after the bridge was built, the number of people visiting the resort grew to 100,000 a weekend. A second span had to be built in 1973 to accommodate the large volume of traffic heading for the Eastern Shore. Today, many of the 300,000 vacationers in Ocean City use the Chesapeake Bay Bridge each week during the summer months. Over the years, transportation to Ocean City has changed with the times. Although many people feel these changes were for the best, there are others who long for the days when going to Ocean City meant a ride on the Baltimore Flyer.

“Approaching Geese” is the Ocean City Development Corporation’s 10th sculpture in its public art project.
OCDC announces its latest art installation The Public Art Committee of the Ocean City Development Corporation is proud to present its latest art project— “Approaching Geese.” Located bayside at the Ocean City convention center is the 10th sculpture in the Ocean City Development Corporation public art project. Others accent the entrances, buildings and walkways throughout the city. The new bayside boardwalk at the rear of the OC Convention Center is restful, peaceful place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and it has become even more beautiful with the addition of the five-foot-tall bronze geese statue. Works of art hold a strong place in OCDC’s redevelopment efforts and its previous artistic works have become an integral part of our city’s landscape. We recognize the important role that public art brings to our commu-
nity and we are very excited about the addition of this sculpture. Renown sculptors, William H. Turner and David H. Turner, father and son, share a talent of capturing the beauty and motion of wildlife in bronze. OCDC is honored to be able share this creation with all the residents and visitors to the city. Thank you to the donors who helped make this beautiful addition to our city possible: Herman H. and Eunice Q. Sorin Endowment for Ocean City, Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation, Telescope Pictures, C. Terry and Janet Hough, Paul and Patricia Dufendach, Jon and Judy Tremellen, In Memory of Milton and Thelma Conner, Harrison Group, Delaware Elevator, Worcester County Commissioners, Ocean City Hotel Motel Restaurant Association, and the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce.

We all want something unique to remember the good times we had in Ocean City, something with bragging rights, something no one else has but us. And in mid-August, you have the opportunity to take home just such a unique keepsake — an original painting of a famous scene in the resort. Every August for 17 years, the Art League of Ocean City hosts “Artists Paint OC,” when for four days, 50 artists spread out across the resort and Assateague Island to paint famous and favorite scenes at beautiful times of the day when the light is perfect. These are professional artists who are really good at what they do, and every painting is one-of-a-kind, framed, and ready to hang. Prices are affordable, too, starting at $100. This year, there are two opportunities to buy the original art. The public is invited to the “wet paint sales” on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 5-8 p.m. and on Sunday, Aug. 14, from 1-3 p.m. Both sales are at the waterfront Ocean City Center for the Arts, 502 94th St. bayside, and both are free to attend. For a free fun family activity on Sunday morning, Aug. 14, come to The Boardwalk near Division St. from 9-11 a.m. and watch the artists at work. Find the yellow hats the artists will be wearing, and watch them paint iconic Boardwalk scenes. Then come to the Arts Center later to purchase your favorite painting. The galleries of the OC Arts Center are open every day, so don’t wait until August to pay us a visit. Admission is free, plus you’ll find a unique gift shop, several art exhibitions, art classes to take, plus free family art projects every Sunday. Check us out at www.ArtLeagueofOceanCity.org or call us 410-524-9433.
