Always plenty of fun things to do in downtown Ocean City Downtown, Boardwalk are the places to be for food, shopping, special events

Looking for something to do while in Ocean City? Offering attractions for all ages and interests, such as amusements, museums, parks, and water activities, downtown Ocean City always offers visitors something fun and interesting to find. In addition to all its attractions, there is a wide variety of hotels and restaurants to fit your needs. Downtown Ocean City and its Boardwalk are home to a great number of restaurants and other food es-

tablishments. And don’t forget our famous Maryland blue crabs. Along with the eateries right on the Boardwalk, other popular options can be found along the bayside and streets of the downtown area of the resort. Whether you’re looking for a quiet crowd or a party crowd, you don’t have to look far. And our public art can be found throughout the downtown area. Another major draw of the downtown area is its number of hotels and motels that offer a variety of styles and rates. Some of these establishments have served Ocean City visitors for generations, while others are quite new.

In addition, plenty of accommodations are available for daily, weekly, seasonal, or year-round rental. While the Boardwalk businesses provide a multitude of retail goods to visitors, from sweets to graphic-tees, businesses off the Boardwalk offer more of a specialty character. The next time you are in the downtown area, make sure you stop in for some shopping. Here are several other reasons to visit Downtown Ocean City, whether it’s during the off-season or in the height of summer: We have special events, public art, plus amusements and arcades. In addition: parks and open space, such as

Sunset Park, Somerset Plaza, the Inlet Park, and the Ocean Bowl Skate Park, the oldest public operating skate park in the country. There also is the Ocean City LifeSaving Station Museum, Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, water sports and fishing, bicycles and Segways, historic buildings. The next time you are downtown, take advantage of the many things to do and see on and off the Boardwalk. (The OCDC is a nonprofit organization charged with revitalizing Downtown Ocean City. Discover Sunset Park while you’re downtown this summer Free performances on bay given throughout summer, from rock to standards

Sunset Park, located along South Division Street between Philadelphia Avenue and the bay in Downtown Ocean City, is Ocean City’s newest park which more people are discovering each year. It is located immediately south of the U.S. Coast Guard Station facility. Constructed in 2007, Sunset Park has evolved into a great venue for special events of all sizes and varieties. Free music, Shakespeare plays, movie nights and other events are on the 2016 schedule. And it’s all free! This location was the original location of the railroad bridge entering Ocean City from Old Bridge Road in West Ocean City. This railroad bridge was destroyed by the 1933 storm that hit Ocean City. However, the new park is designed with railroad style features including the design of the restroom building, trellis, and the bricks located on the perimeter of the park that are from the original train station once located along S. Philadelphia Avenue. This linear park contains a lighted entertainment stage, restrooms, environmental plaques, nice landscaping, and a short pier that provides fantastic views of the Bay. Sunset Park is highlighted by a 60-

foot-tall tower that is lit at night and can be seen from the Route 50 Bridge as well as other downtown locations. For the past nine years, the Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC) and Town of Ocean City have collaborated with various local nonprofit organizations to bring free music concerts to Sunset Park, Ocean City’s newest public park.

These concerts will be performed on Thursday evenings in July and August 7 p.m. Local nonprofit organization sponsor individual events and performances throughout the year. Sunset Park is a beautiful setting and can even be rented out for private uses such as weddings and the like. If interested in renting this space

one can contact the Town of Ocean City’s Recreation and Parks Department at (410) 250-0125. So make sure that you check out some of the special events at Sunset Park this summer. You can access information on music events at www.ocdc.org or www.ocean.com. Or call the OCDC at (410) 289-7739.

Backshore Brewing Company’s popularity continues to soar New lineup of handcrafted brews, food and same fun staff make it a must-see Ocean City destination OCEAN CITY, MARYLAND

By BETHANY HOWE

s the Backshore team gears up for it’s fourth summer, the crew is finding that more and more customers are returning each year. The iconic painted VW van has turned the brewery into the perfect vacation photo opportunity. Tourists line up every day in the summer to sit inside the van for photos, while sipping the awardwinning beers that have skyrocketed to popularity. Brewmaster Adam Shockley brews on a daily basis and is constantly experimenting with new flavors and styles. Backshore has six beers on tap that are always changing. Whatever your taste in beer, you will find one to fall in love with at Backshore. Styles range from complex, satisfying the most finicky of beer geeks, to mild summer ales used as ‘gateway’ flavors to lure the masses into the craft beer world. Samples of all six craft beers are served in skateboard flights that come in various colors. In addition to the ever-changing six taps of craft beer, Backshore Brewing Co. has crafted up something new this year: Hoop Tea, a wildly popularr alcoholic tea drink. It is brewed with purified water, tea leaves, organic cane sugar and naturally fermented alcohol. The tea is 4 percent alcohol and almost entirely organic.

A

Backshore Brewing Co., located next to Hammerheads on the Beach, ser ves samples of its craft beer, also known as flights, in skateboards of various colors.

Backshore is distributing two flavors this summer: white mango and a classic, southern-style sweet lemon that you can find at any of your favorite bars & restaurants in Maryland. A wider variety of teas is available at the brewery for you to try or take home in a growler. The brewery also serves up more than just drinks; a full menu is availabble, as well. Favorites include homemade specialty personal pizzas and colossal pretzels – a homemade soft pretzel bigger than your head topped with delicious crab dip and various other dipping sauces. Backshore Brewing Co. defines the true essence of the beach lifestyle. “We work harrd, but never serious. We brew our beer in the salty air, with our toes in the sand and the sun on our faces,” says owner Danny Robinson. Locals will tell you that to get the full Ocean City beach experiences, you have to visit Backshore Brewing Co. this summer.

OCDC holds 16th annual meeting and awards ceremony The Ocean City Development Corporation’s 16th annual meeting and awards ceremony was held at Shenanigan’s Irish Pub, 4th Street and the Boardwalk, May 11. Chris Trimper, OCDC president, reviewed the group’s accomplishments over the past year and presented awards to individuals, property owners and businesses that have helped to revitalize the downtown area. The awards presentation began with three honors for work completed under the OCDC’s Facade Program, which helps to promote traditional Ocean City architecture design standards and brings a brighter face to the downtown community. Winners were: Jonathan Burkey at 108 11th St. and contractor Fitz Construction; Pauline Elliott and Jane Wood at 300 4th St. and contractor Spicer Brothers; Patrick McLaughlin at 1509 St. Louis Ave. and contractor S&S Maintenance. The 14 facade projects completed during 2015 bring the total number of renovations aided by the program to 177. These upgrades have resulted in more the $5.8 million in private investment in downtown properties. Although OCDC provides financial assistance for the improvements, approximately 80 percent of the cost of

these projects is paid for by the property owners. The Business Assistance program award went to Paul and Lisa Carlotta at 1607 Philadelphia Ave., and contractor Phil Moscierella, for interior improvements they did for OC Wasabi and the Juice Shack. During the past year, seven projects have been completed under the OCDC Business Assistance program. Over the life of the program, 13 projects have been finished, resulting in approximately $987,000 in private investment. The New Residential Project award was given to Todd Burbage and the Bayview Grand at 401 6th St. Also recognized was contractor K.C Harrington and Fisher Architecture. The New Downtown Special Event Award was given to the Shore Craft Beer Festival. Although organizers didn’t know what to expect and hoped for a crowd in the 200-person range, more than 600 people attended the event at Sunset Park. The first craft beer festival in downtown Ocean City yook place on Oct. 24 and featured 12 craft beer businesses, a pair of food trucks and live musical entertainment. This year’s event is scheduled for Oct. 29 at Sunset Park, South Philadelphia Avenue. The OCDC Organizational Award

went to the Boardwalk Task Force. The five-member advisory committee was established in 2015 to make recommendations to the mayor and City Council to regulate Boardwalk conduct and encourage a family-friendly atmosphere. The group also reviews outdoor display permits and updates business

directory signs. Also honored were three departing OCDC Board of Directors members, Bryon Davis, Geoff Robbins and Todd Ferrante. New board members for 2016 are Anna Dolle Bushnell, Bob Givarz, G. Hale Harrison, John Lewis and Stephanie Meehan.

Want to become an OCDC member? Membership in the Ocean City Development Corporation is open to any resident of Ocean City or any person or entity having an interest in the economic or community development in Downtown Ocean City. Membership fees are $100 per year. An application can be obtained by calling the office at (410) 2897739, or by visiting the website at www.ocdc.org. Nat’l Guard band concert Acclaimed ensemble plays throughout region, overseas

The Air National Guard of the Northeast will present a free concert at Sunset Park in downtown Ocean City on Sunday, July 3 at 7 p.m., The Air National Guard Band of the Northeast will present an exciting concert of band favorites. The Band of the Northeast represents the Pennsylvania Air National Guard, the United States Air National Guard, and the United States Air Force as musical ambassadors for both military and civilian audiences throughout the entire Mid-Atlantic and Northeast region. The Air National Guard Band of the Northeast was formed in 1942 in Rapid City, South Dakota as the 53rd Army Air Forces Band. Federal recognition was extended to the band in 1949. The Band of the Northeast is based at Fort Indiantown Gap as part of the Regional Support Group to the 193rd Special Operations Wing stationed in Middletown, Pennsylvania. A traditional Air National Guard squadron, the band consists of 40 members, all traditional Air National Guard members with civilian careers who meet one weekend a month to rehearse and perform.

The Air National Guard of the Northeast performs at Sinatra Park in New Jersey, overlooking Manhattan.

Its ranks are filled with professional musicians, educators, students, administrators, salesmen, builders and other professionals. The band has received many awards, including the Air Force Outstanding Unit award and the Pennsylvania Governor’s Unit Citation.

Its annual concert tours have taken it to Germany, Holland, France, the Azores, Antigua-West Indies, Norway, England, Denmark, and throughout the United States. The concert is free and open to the public. Sunset Park is located along South

Division Street between Philadelphia Avenue and the Bay in downtown Ocean City. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own seating for this event. For additional information call the Ocean City Development Corporation Office at (410) 289-7739.
