Listeners take in a free concert at Sunset Park on South Division Street next to the Coast Guard station in downtown Ocean City.
Sunset Park: small venue has big schedule Popularity grows, as more people discover this gem of a park on bayside downtown
S
unset Park, located along South Division Street between Philadelphia Avenue and the bay in downtown Ocean City, is Ocean City’s newest park and more people are discovering it each year. It is located immediately south of the U.S. Coast Guard Station facility. Constructed in 2007, Sunset Park has evolved into a great venue for special events of all sizes and varieties. Free music, Shakespeare plays, movie nights and other events are on the 2015 schedule. And it’s all free! This spot was the original location of the railroad bridge entering Ocean City from Old
Bridge Road in West Ocean City. This railroad bridge was destroyed by the 1933 storm that hit Ocean City. However, the new park is designed with railroad style features including the design of the restroom building, trellis, and the bricks located on the perimeter of the park that are from the original train station once located along S. Philadelphia Avenue. This linear park contains a lighted entertainment stage, restrooms, environmental plaques, nice landscaping and a short pier that provides fantastic views of the bay. SunSee DISCOVER Page 9
Sunset Park is the Ocean City Development Corporation’s little gem on the bay. Enhanced by railroad-style features, it is the site of free concerts, as shown above, plays, movies and other events.

‘Dance of the Dolphins’ sculpture installed The Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC) has been involved in providing public art in the downtown area and throughout Ocean City. From sculptures, such as the White Marlin water feature at the Route 50 bridge entrance, to painted utility boxes and wall murals, the OCDC Public Art Committee has many successes. The newest addition to the OCDC's Public Art Program has been unveiled. “Dance of the Dolphins,” is a majestic, bronze statue of three dolphins supported by a bronze wave that graces the southwest corner of Route 90 and Coastal Highway. The dedication of the statue was held on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 in recognition of National Dolphin Day. “We’ve all seen dolphins when walking the beach or riding the waves and everyone loves it when there’s a dolphin sighting,” said Chris Trimper, chair of the OCDC’s Public Art Committee. “There’s something special about these creatures that makes this statue the perfect symbol to welcome the millions of visitors to our resort each year.” The 16-foot sculpture is another signature piece designed by sculptor David Turner of Turner Sculptures in Onley, Va. It will be centered in a beautiful, park-like setting designed by Becker Morgan Group Architects.
“The Dance of the Dolphins sculpture including the plaza will cost approximately $100,000. A campaign to raise funds to underwrite the costs of this newest addition to Ocean City’s Public Art is underway,” Trimper said. “We have 100 percent participation from our board and Public Art Committee, now we must turn to the community and visitors to help us reach our goal. As a nonprofit organization, OCDC must rely on the commitment and investment from residents and visitors to help underwrite the cost of these projects.” Honorary Chairs Michael and Marilyn James were present at the dedication to accept two major sponsorships at the Diamond Level, $10,000 from Hale and Alberta Harrison, and $10,000 from Kim Messick of Donoway/Bethany Resort Furnishings. Each of the donors has the opportunity to name one of the three dolphins and each will receive a numbered and dated replica of the statue, in addition to an engraved bronze plaque at the base of the sculpture. Messick announced that she and her family will name one of the dolphins “Clearwater” in memory of their father, Robert “Clearwater” Messick. “We have one dolphin left to be sponsored,” said Michael James.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for someone to name a dolphin in honor of or in memory of someone special in their life and support the on-going public art program as well.” There are also other sponsorship opportunities. The Platinum Level of a $5,000 donation will give donors a numbered and dated replica of the statue and the donor’s name will be displayed on a bronze plaque on the brick wall in the Dance of the Dolphins Plaza. The Gold Level of a $2,500 donation will give donors a watercolor print of the dolphin statue and plaza, and the donor’s name will be displayed on a bronze plaque on the brick wall in Dance of the Dolphins Plaza. The Silver Level of a $1,000 dona-
tion will have the donor’s name displayed on a bronze plaque on the brick wall in the Plaza and the donor’s name will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a numbered and dated replica of the sculpture or the original watercolor print. In addition to selling raffle tickets for $100 for the opportunity to win a numbered and signed replica, a number of events and activities are planned for visitors to our beaches throughout the summer months to bring awareness to the Dance of the Dolphins Campaign and to provide educational resources about these endangered mammals. For more information, visit the website ocdolphins.com, the Facebook page OC Dance of the Dolphins, or contact OCDC at 410-289-7739.

Ga. band launches Sunset events
On Thursday, June 25 at 7 p.m. Radio Birds from Atlanta, Ga. will be performing a free concert at Sunset Park in downtown Ocean City. Their sound is simple: “Plain-Old rock n’ roll” music with a distinctly hairy touch. Meaning, it is not clean and it is not easy (or too difficult). It is what you get when four guys all write music with the basic beliefs that it must be played live, and it must be played everywhere. Each of their songs is different from the others and is balanced by the web of harmonies that entangles the whole group. Everybody sings, and sometimes, you just can’t help but sing along. Radio Birds has just released their
latest CD called “Contemporary American Slang.” Also as special guest at this June 25 event is the band Wise Guys from Bowie, Md. Wise Guys plays “just good ol’ rock n’ roll.” This event is being co-sponsored by Irie Radio FM 98.1. Sunset Park is located along South Division Street between Philadelphia Avenue and the bay in downtown Ocean City. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own seating for this event. Beverages will be available for sale by the Ocean City Recreation Boosters. For additional information, call the Ocean City Development Corporation Office at 410-289-7739.

downtown area and Ocean City is no exception. While the Boardwalk businesses provide a multitude of retail goods to visitors, from sweets to graphic-tees, businesses off the Boardwalk offer more of a specialty character. The next time you are in the downtown area, make sure you pop in for some shopping. Here are several other reasons to visit downtown Ocean City, whether it’s during the off-season or in the height of summer: Historic buildings, special events, parks and open spaces such as Somerset Plaza, the Inlet Park, Sunset Park, and the Ocean Bowl Skate Park, the oldest public operating skate park in the country. In addition, there are amusements and arcades, the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum, Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, water sports and fishing and bicycles and Segways. So the next time you are downtown, make sure you take advantage of the many things to do and see both on and off the Boardwalk.
