CAR recognizes members’ achievements Association of Realtors presents 2017 awards at ceremony in Salisbury

In recognition of their hard work to uphold the highest of industry standards, six local real estate professionals were honored during the Coastal Association of Realtors (CAR) 2017 Annual Awards ceremony on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at The Fountains Wedding & Conference Center in Salisbury. Linda Moran, a Realtor for Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices PenFed Realty in Ocean City, received this year’s Realtor of the Year Award for being an experienced, dedicated professional with a true passion for the industry and a lengthy resume of service to her local, state, and national associations. Moran is CAR’s current immediate past president and has been rec-

ognized for her support of Coastal Hospice, The Sunshine Kids and the Maryland Economic Development Corporation. Moran is especially dedicated to Continuing Education (CE), having earned her Accredited Buyer’s Representative, Certified Residential Specialist and Graduate Realtor Institute designations, as well as her At Home With Diversity Certification through Maryland Realtors. She has also completed the Maryland Realtors Leadership Program, as well as numerous other professional development courses. Moran has assisted in the development and implementation of designations, certifications and CE courses, and she is a regular speaker at local, state and national events, as well as a coach to top agents and brokerages across the country. Cam Bunting, a Realtor and broker with Bunting Realty in Berlin, won this year’s Lifetime Achieve-

ment Award for being a dedicated professional for over 30 years and fostering a genuine passion for helping clients achieve their homeownership dreams. Bunting also won this year’s Community Service Award for being an involved member of CAR and a shining example of how important it is for Realtors to give back to the places where they live and work. Bunting has served on numerous CAR committees, as well as on the association’s Board of Directors. She is also an active member of the local chapter of the Women’s Council of Realtors. She has earned her Accredited Buyer’s Representative, Certified Residential Specialist, and Graduate Realtor Institute designations, as well as numerous certifications. She has done extensive volunteer and fundraising work for many local organizations, and most recently raised over $517,000 for Coastal

Hospice at the Ocean, a new facility slated for construction in Ocean Pines. She has also supported Atlantic General Hospital, the Berlin Little League, the Better Business Bureau, the Berlin Election Committee and the Berlin Restaurant Week Committee, among others. She’s received a number of local honors, including the 2015 Town of Berlin Citizen of the Year Awards and the 2016 Hats for Hospice Honoree Award. Joe Wilson, a Realtor with Condominium Realty in Ocean City, won this year’s Outstanding Achievement Award for being a model Realtor whose dedication and enthusiasm have been key to the continued development of CAR. Wilson holds his Seniors Real Estate Specialist designation and is a candidate for the Certified Residential Specialist designation. He also Continued on page 18

Realtors say extending flood insurance should be priority Announces agreement with House committee on bill to reauthorize with changes

WASHINGTON – The National Flood Insurance Program is now less than one month away from expiration, raising concerns that homeowners, consumers and commercial property owners could soon find themselves either unprotected or unable to get a mortgage. In July, the National Association of Realtors announced it had reached an agreement with the U.S. House Financial Services Committee on key legislation to reauthorize and reform the NFIP with important modifications to retain grandfathering and reduce rate increases. The move offered hope that reauthorization could win swift approval, but with less than a month left before the program expires, real estate professionals say time is running short. NAR President William E. Brown, of Alamo, California believes that Congress needs to take swift action on a short-term extension of the program so they can continue work on the 21st Century

Flood Reform Act. He issued the following statement: “The country has been here before, and we know what happens if the National Flood Insurance Program expires. “Homebuying activity grinds to a halt, to the tune of 40,000 lost or interrupted sales every month. Meanwhile, existing homeowners as well as commercial entities may find their largest asset unprotected if the Federal Emergency Management Administration can’t renew NFIP policies that expire. “Consumers and homeowners alike deserve certainty. With Congress returning from August recess today, extending the NFIP to avoid a lapse should be a top priority. “Doing so will afford Congress the time necessary to finish work reforming and reauthorizing the program. “The House Financial Services Committee has passed vital, longterm reauthorization legislation, which would strengthen the NFIP. “These critical reforms are a long time coming, and we look forward to working with the House and Senate pass the 21st Century Flood Reform Act once the threat of a lapse has been addressed.”

Save deduction for loan interest

Tax reform done right could yield savings and simplification that benefits average Americans, but misguided reforms can pose significant threats to the economy. That’s the message the National Association of Realtors brought to Congress, as Iona Harrison, chair of NAR’s Federal Taxation Committee, testified before the Senate Finance Committee. Harrison told senators that putting homeownership in the crosshairs of tax reform would strike at millions of American households. Over the past year, proposals for tax reform have included the elimination of important benefits like the state and local tax deduction, a near doubling of the standard deduction – which would all but nullify the benefits of the mortgage interest deduction – as well as caps to the MID. Realtors have warned lawmakers that proposals to limit or nullify the tax incentives for homeownership could actually raise taxes on millions of middle class homeowners while putting the value of their homes at risk. In her testimony, Harrison responded to critics of real estate deductions, saying 70 percent of the value of real property tax deductions in 2014 went to taxpayers with incomes less than $200,000.
