Discover the fun of downtown Ocean City With the “off-season” coming, take a stroll off OC’s great beach and check out downtown restaurants, shopping and special events. Downtown Ocean City is the perfect vacation spot for all groups, from families to the over-21 crowd. Offering attractions for all ages and interests, such as amusements and museums, or parks and water activities, you can make Ocean City the vacation you desire. In addition to these attractions, there are an assortment of hotels and restaurants, with a variety of styles and rates. Some of these establishments have served Ocean City visi-

tors for generations, while others are quite new. In addition, there are plenty of accommodations that are available for daily, weekly, seasonal, or year-round rental. Another major draw of the downtown area is its restaurants and don’t forget our famous Maryland blue crabs. Along with the eateries right on the Boardwalk, other popular options can be found along the bayside and streets of the downtown area of the resort. Whether you’re looking for a quiet crowd or a party crowd, you don’t have to look far. Retail stores are necessary in establishing a strong identity for a

downtown area and Ocean City is no exception. While the Boardwalk businesses provide a multitude of retail goods to visitors, from sweets to graphic-tees, businesses off the Boardwalk offer more of a specialty character. The next time you are in the downtown area, make sure you pop in for some shopping. Here are several other reasons to visit downtown Ocean City, whether it’s during the off-season or in the height of summer: Historic buildings, special events, parks and open spaces such as Somerset Plaza, the Inlet Park, Sunset Park and the Ocean Bowl Skate Park,

the oldest public operating skate park in the country. Also there are amusements and arcades, the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum, Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, water sports, fishing, bicycles and Segways. So the next time you are downtown, make sure you take advantage of the many things to do and see both on and off the Boardwalk. (The OCDC is a nonprofit organization charged with revitalizing downtown Ocean City. For more information or to become a member of the OCDC, visit our website at www.ocdc.org or call at 410-2897739.)

Public art holds distinct spot in OCDC portfolio

‘Dance of the Dolphins’ raffle tickets available The Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC) is pleased to announce that raffle tickets are now available for two unique gifts: • A miniature (13-inch tall) sculpture made directly from the wax model of the actual “Dance of the Dolphins” sculpture by David Turner located at the southwest corner of Coastal Highway and Route 90. • The original watercolor of the “Dance of the Dolphins” sculpture created by local artist, Stasia Heubeck. The raffle tickets cost $100 each and only 200 will be sold. The drawing will take place on Sept. 30 at the “Dance of the Dolphins” plaza. To purchase raffle tickets, please contact the OCDC at 410289-7739 or visit the OCDC office at 108 Dorchester Street. Proceeds from the raffle tickets will be used toward the “Dance of the Dolphins” project and OCDC Public Art Program. The OCDC is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization.

The Ocean City Development Corporation has been involved in providing public art in the downtown area and throughout Ocean City. From sculptures, such as the white marlin water feature at the Route 50 bridge entrance, painted utility boxes and wall murals, the OCDC Public Art Committee has many successes. These public art projects add great cultural, social and economic value to our resort. They humanize the built environment and are freely accessible. The OCDC Public Art Program holds a strong place in the OCDC’s revitalization efforts and these artistic works have become an integral part of the resort’s landscape. The OCDC is a not-for-profit organization and it relies on private contributions to fund its public art projects. These enhancements to our community require commitment and investment from our residents, businesses, and visitors to bring them to fruition. The newest addition to the OCDC’s Public Art Program has been unveiled and the OCDC is requesting public support. “Dance of the Dolphins,” is a maSee CAMPAIGN Page 10

Campaign will raise money for dolphin art

The “Dance of the Dolphins” sculpture by David Turner, as shown in this architectural rendering, graces a park near the eastern terminus of the Route 90 bridge.

Continued from Page 8 jestic, bronze statue of three dolphins supported by a bronze wave that graces the southwest corner of Route 90 and Coastal Highway. The dedication of the statue was held on April 14 in recognition of National Dolphin Day. The 16-foot sculpture is another signature piece designed and created by sculptor David Turner of Turner Sculptures in Onley, Va. It is centered in a beautiful, parklike setting designed by Becker Morgan Group Architects. There are various donation levels for giving toward this public art project. The donations can be to recognize one’s self, business, or to memorialize a family member. A number of events and activities are planned for visitors to our beaches throughout the summer months to bring awareness to the “Dance of the Dolphins” Campaign and to provide educational resources about these endangered mammals. For more information, visit the website, ocdolphins.com, the Facebook page, OC “Dance of the Dolphins,” or contact OCDC at 410-289-7739.

Facade program revitalizes downtown one building at a time As of Aug. 1, a total of 174 older buildings have been renovated using the OCDC Façade Program in downtown Ocean City south of 17th Street. This program provides financial assistance to businesses and property owners looking to improve the exteriors of their buildings in this designated area. There are currently two

other façade projects underway. The OCDC Façade Program has a tremendous impact on the appearance of many older buildings. To date, more than $5.5 million has been invested in downtown Ocean City through this program. These newly renovated projects greatly enhance the taxable value

The Kitchen

thus benefitting all Ocean City and Worcester County residents. Funding for the OCDC Façade Program is made available from the Maryland Department of Housing & Community Development’s Community Legacy Program. Although the OCDC has committed all its façade funds to date for

2015, it has applied for additional funds through the DHCD. If funds area again approved by DHCD, the OCDC will let downtown business and property owners know of such an award. For formation about the OCDC Façade Improvement Program call the OCDC at 410-289-7739.

Ocean City Councilman Dennis Dare cruises the Boardwalk in last October’s Drive in Disguise event, which is part of the “Vintage OC Tag Rally” staged by the Downtown Association.

Special events scheduled downtown during off-season

The popular Shakespeare play, The Taming of the Shrew, will be performed by the Brown Box Theatre Project at Sunset Park (South Division Street and bay) starting at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6. This is a free performance. Bring your own seating. Call OCDC at 410289-7739 for more information. Other performance dates can be viewed at www.brownboxtheatre.com. Ocean City Cruzers car display and music by the Nate Clendenen Duo (Acoustic Rock) to be held on Sunday, Sept. 6 beginning at 3 p.m. on Somerset Plaza (Somerset Street between the Boardwalk and S. Baltimore Avenue). This is a free event. Call OCDC at 410-289-7739 for more information. Ocean City Cruzers car display to be held on Sunday, Sept. 27 beginning at 3 p.m. on Somerset Plaza. Music to be provided by OC Cruzers. OC Vintage Tag Rally: For the fifth year, residents and visitors with a vintage Ocean City license plate will be allowed to ride down the Boardwalk during the annual Ocean City Vintage License Plate Rally, which will take place Saturday, Oct. 24 at 3 p.m. Continuing with the “Drive in Disguise” theme, people wishing to decorate their cars also will be allowed to ride down the Boardwalk. There is a $25 registration fee for non-vintage license plate participants and those vehicles must be decorated. There is no fee for those with an Ocean City “vintage” license plate (these are not vintage car tags but the special Ocean City plate).

Proof of insurance is required for all participants. Proceeds from the event will be used for prizes and event costs. Registration forms are available at www.downtownassociation.net. For additional information, contact Nancy Howard at 443-235-4405 or email neffiehoward@comcast.net. If you do not have a city vintage plate and would like to obtain one, visit the city web site at www.oceancitymd.gov. Storm Warriors 5K run/walk: The Ocean City Museum Society will hold its second Storm Warriors 5K run/walk Saturday morning, Nov. 14 on the Boardwalk in Ocean City on behalf of the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum. Sign-in starts at 8 a.m. at the museum at the inlet. The funds raised in the Storm Warriors 5K run/ walk will assist in maintaining and enhancing the mission of the society. The society’s purpose is to preserve, educate and research the history of Ocean City, the original life-saving service and coastal Worcester County. The event is being organized with the help of OC Tri-Running. Awards will be given for several runner and walking categories. You can register online at www.octrirunning.com. If you are unable to participate, you can donate to the event or to a runner. Questions should be directed to Nancy Howard at 443-235-4405. Also be certain to visit the web site, www.ocmuseum.org.
