La Jolla Shores La Jolla Cove Point Loma Wreck Alley South Case Cove
La Jolla Shores This popular mile-long beach is the best entry point to explore the waters of La Jolla Canyon. Once you get in the waters, swimming beyond the break will give way to sloping sand. For scuba divers, it’s the ideal entry point to explore La Jolla Canyon. Eventually you’ll reach the edge of a drop-off, which plunges 600 feet (180 m) into the canyon. Along both the rim and the wall, rocks, hard coral, seagrass and strands of kelp host everything from octopus, crabs and sheepshead to pipefish, blennies, and a magical assortment of nudibranchs.
La Jolla Cove Just North of Hospital Point, entering the water in La Jolla, there is a reef extending from the ocean side of the jetty down to Hospital Point. This means there is a cornucopia of marine life for an immensely scenic dive. It's a local favorite that features a large population of seals and sea lions.
Point Loma This area is home to a vibrant marine ecosystem thanks to colder water and ocean exposure providing more nutrients. Whether you take a short boat ride or swim out, you’ll come across the expansive kelp forests that are home to tree fish, kelpfish, bass, and many other amazing creatures. Dives here typically start around 45 feet and bottom out at 120 feet. Due to the kelp forest, dives can get fairly dark, so remember a dive torch if you’re going later in the day.
Wreck Alley Wreck Alley is an artificial reef that sits a few miles off the coast of Mission Beach. It lies halfway between La Jolla and Point Loma. While the alley features eight ships and other structures, the two most popular are the Canadian destroyer called the HCMS Yukon, and the Ruby E, which is a 165-foot Coast Guard cutter. Scuba diving shipwrecks is an incredible experience for any scuba diver, and Wreck Alley provides plenty of adventure.
South Case Cove Enter the water in La Jolla, just north of Hospital Point. A reef extending from the ocean side of the jetty down to Hospital Point means an abundance of marine life and some incredibly scenic diving. After a surf entry, depths quickly reach 15-30 feet. A favorite place for setting lobster traps and for spearfishing, this local favorite also features a large population of seals and sea lions.
