GET A CROSS SUNNY SMILES AT THE FAIR

Local residents are risking their lives every day crossing Presidents Avenue between The Grove Community Centre and the new Ocean Grove plaza, writes Carly Helweg.

Currently there are no permanent pedestrian crossings on Presidents Avenue putting elderly people and children using the library and community health centre during the day at risk trying to reach The Terrace shopping strip. The Community Association has taken up the issue. Story page 3.

‘BEST CLUB’ AWARD

THE sun certainly shone on Surfside Primary School’s Fresh Food Fair at the weekend.

After months of organising by teachers, parents and pupils , the fair – the major fundraiser for the school’s developing kitchen classroom – was lapped up by locals and visitors. The comment by so many was there was just ‘heaps to do’. As the hazy morning warmed up crowds were thick in the grounds enjoying music, fairground rides, food stalls, honey tasting, veggie planting, rabbit patting – even Harley rides. CLUB Grove has won Best Community Club at the Community Clubs Association of Victoria’s Inaugural Awards held at the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron last month. The success follows this year’s Clubs Victoria Annual Award wins of Bowls Club of the Year and Bowls Club Manager of the Year. The awards were attended by more than 200 Club and Industry representatives. As well as Best Community Club – which according to the judging criteria showed the club displayed “outstanding community benefit through the provision of services

and facilities and other community initiatives” - Club Grove also partnered with Prestige Jayco in its Club Sponsor of the Year win. The judges deemed the initiative to have gone “beyond the call” to support the Club. Partner projects have included the cabin park initiative, the community bus and supporting junior bowls. Community Clubs Association of Victoria (CCAV) is a not-forprofit industry association whose sole aim is the ongoing welfare of community clubs, with over 150 member clubs. Club Grove assistant manager

Karen Foley said they were very excited by their latest success and added: “Our congratulations to Prestige Jayco on winning Club Sponsor of the Year.” Prestige Jayco general manager Richie Fort said: “Prestige Jayco are proud to be recognised as Club Sponsor of the Year and appreciate the efforts of Club Grove Management staff and most importantly the members in making the sponsorship work for both parties. “We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial association not just now but in the future”

Bus offers a safer night in city Geelong Council is trialing a Central Geelong NightBus to help young people get safely and inexpensively back to Ocean Grove after a night out in the city. From October 31, the NightBus will operate every Saturday night (early Sunday mornings) and on special event nights from 1.30am to 4am for a five-month trial period. For just $5 people can catch the NightBus from Moorabool Street (between Malop and Lt

Malop Street) near the Safe Taxi Rank to Ocean Grove and 20 suburbs around the region. Benders Buslines will provide the buses and drivers for the service. Hume Protection Group security guards will coordinate the Central Geelong NightBus bus stop and will travel on board all NightBus services. The NightBus will provide 10 trips on five pre-determined routes with the capacity to transport up 400

passengers per night of operation. Mayor Cr John Mitchell encouraged nightclub goers to try the NightBus this Saturday. “It’s a safe and cheap way to get home. $5 will get you as far as Ocean Grove, Lara or Torquay so it’s a really great initiative. “It will complement the existing taxi service and help reduce the number of people waiting for transport during peak times or wandering the streets following a night out. It also aims to deter

people from driving under the influence of alcohol.” Tickets can be purchased as you board the Central Geelong NightBus or beforehand at a range of locations around Geelong, including council Customer Service Centres. Tickets are $5 per person, and multi-ride tickets are available for $25. CCTV is on board all NightBus services and antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated. POSTIVELY PINK OCEAN Grove ladies enjoyed drink that was positively pink – staging an event in support of the Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon Day. The Pink Ribbon initiative raises money and awareness for women affected by breast cancer. The Ocean Grove ladies held a fundraiser at the Nectar Bar on Friday night – raising more than $550. The ladies would like to say thanks to Chris Davis who orgainised the event and local traders who donated goods for the raffles.

Call for Presidents crossing Local residents are risking their lives every day crossing Presidents Avenue between The Grove Community Centre and the new Target Ocean Grove plaza. Currently there are no permanent pedestrian crossings on Presidents Avenue putting elderly people and children using the library and community health centre during the day at risk trying to reach The Terrace shopping strip. Joanne Van Slageren from City of Greater Geelong said there was no requirement for a pedestrian crossing on Presidents Avenue when Ocean Plaza was built. “The planning permit for the Target Ocean Grove required the

installation of a zebra crossing between the subject property and the Council car park,” she said. There were also no discussions within council during the permit process of a crossing on the western side of the plaza. Presidents Avenue is a municipal street for which Geelong Council has authority. VicRoads Regional Director for South Western Victoria, Robin Miles said the street would be observed for any traffic issues arising out of the opening of the new plaza. “Council have advised VicRoads that they will be monitoring traffic and pedestrian flows at the

site following the opening of Ocean Plaza and will consider implementing traffic or pedestrian facilities if the warrants are met,” Mr Miles said. “If council identify that a pedestrian facility is justified they will approach VicRoads for consent.” Ocean Grove resident Roy Bell approached the Voice concerned for those having to cross the road in that area, especially the elderly. He wanted an answer as to why Presidents Avenue as a busy main road, was ignored when Ocean Plaza was being built. “How many people have to get killed before something gets done?” he said. Ocean Grove Community Association lobbies

to the Geelong Council regularly on local issues however OGCA President John Fendyk said that they have not had anyone approach them in regards to this issue. “We encourage people to write to the association so we can lobby to the council on issues like this,” he said. The OGCA can act on behalf of a group or individual to cut through the red tape involved with applying to Geelong Council on local concerns. Do you think there should be a pedestrian crossing between Ocean Plaza and The Grove Community Centre on Presidents Avenue? If so contact us at news@ oceangrovevoice.com

Pet stop

Dear Editor As the Youth liaison officer at the Bellarine Police Station, I was lucky enough to be invited to a recent paintball/skirmish camp in Mount Gambier as organised by Nikki Dunne from the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre. Also invited were 31 children, aged 12 to 18, who were all from the Bellarine area and who made no secret in hiding who was their intended paintball “target”.

As both a Police officer and a parent, I understand the need for praise which is the reason for writing this letter. Over the three day camp, in which we also visited Princess Margaret Caves and went tenpin bowling, the behaviour of all these kids was faultless. They should all be commended for the respect and manners they displayed at all times and their willingness to complete designated tasks. To Nikki and her team, no doubt this

behaviour is a reflection of the wonderful job you do and it is much appreciated. For the record, after 15 years of Police Training, I considered my chances of being “paintballed” were very slim, how wrong I was, for I now have 31 bruises on my body to prove it. I remember launching the Romp and Chomp program at Surfside Day Care and Kindergarten in 2005 and I am so pleased to see the successful results of the program in this region. As Minister for Community Services, I recently announced that Geelong children are bucking the trend of increasing childhood obesity thanks this ground breaking program which has been running in local family day care, kindergartens and childcare centres in Geelong and Queenscliffe regions. The State Government launched the project to tackle the growing problem of childhood obesity and its negative impact on a child’s health and wellbeing. The project targeted about 12,000 children under five and saw a significant reduction in the

prevalence of childhood obesity through giving families and children’s services staff the support and information they need to make healthier diet and lifestyle choices for children in their care. The results of the Geelong program show it is the most successful community-based obesity prevention initiative evaluated to date, proving for the first time that early childhood is the right time to promote healthy messages. It has been successful in promoting the benefits of a healthy diet and exercise to young children. It is very pleasing to see that changes including changes to food and drink choices as well as increased physical play have made a real difference and that these changes have been continued by the participants and are now part of daily programs. Congratulations to all who participated in the program and keep up the good work!

Remembrance Day

On November 11th Remembrance Day services will be held across the Bellarine. These are always moving events, attended by people of all ages to mark this important occasion. We remember those who died and also those who returned having given so much for their country. It is particularly important for us to remember those in our own local

community who served, those who gave their lives as well as the families of our servicemen and women. Lest we forget. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact my office if there are any issues we may be able to assist you with.

Kingston at centre of CFA exercise

FIREFIGHTERS turned Kingston Park into a temporary staging area during a recent Bellarine CFA exercise. Crews from Grove as well as Wallington

and across the region 7 congregated with their vehicles for briefings ahead of what many fear will be another tough fire season.

Crews also took briefings from Parks Victoria Ranger Stuart Willsher on measures he is taking to get fuel loads reduced in Ocean Grove Nature Reserve.

Plaza still a one shop stop OCEAN Plaza finally opened its doors on October 22 starting a new chapter in Ocean Grove’s retail history. However, only one store has opened its doors as of yet leaving the remaining retail spaces empty, just like the 89 car parks in the underground garage. Michael Russ from DZine construction group said that most of the leases have been finalised for the centre, with two still in

negotiation and two still to be filled. However he was confident that the entire plaza would be open and trading by the end of December. “By Christmas we expect the whole space to be occupied by either permanent or short term retailers,” he said. For those unsure of exactly which retailers are

going into Ocean Plaza, the confirmed list as it stands now includes. •Gloria Jeans (Due to open the first week of December) •QPS pharmacy (Moving from their current position in The Terrace) •B.Js Tennis and Leisure sporting shop •Salon Rouge Hairdressers The two leases still under negotiation are with an undisclosed restaurant and an ice creamery.

Final cabin slots into park THE final cabin in Club Grove’s overhaul of Green Valley Caravan Park arrived last week. The site now features 40 unified cabins, newly landscaped surrounds and its own water harvesting system. Park manager Steve Kendall said he was happy to see the final cabin arrive on route from Dandenong. Club Grove has worked

closely with cabin supplier Prestige Jayco to deliver the project. “It’s very exciting, and long time in the planning,” said Prestige’s Richie Fort, “It has worked well for both sides. It’s also exciting for the owners of the cabins. The cabin owners get to move in on December 1, ahead of the promised ‘in by Christmas’ pledge they gave the buyers. The final cabin is moved into place, looked on by Cabin Park manager Steven Kendall, Club Grove assistant manager Karen Foley and Richie Fort of Prestige Jayco.

I HAVE been living in Ocean Grove along with my partner and three children for the last 6 years. I grew up in Cannes, in the south of France. It is roughly 50kms from Monaco and not many more from the Italian border, at that point on the coast where the Alps drop into the Mediterranean. After school, at 19, I left France with the naive desire to see the world. Since then, my time has been split between Ireland and Australia, residing long enough in both countries to have witnessed the rise of the Celtic Tiger, the end of the Troubles in the North, and here in Australia, Mabo and the Keating government. I last returned to Australia in 99 and from Melbourne eventually moved to Ocean Grove. My first impression of Ocean Grove is not the town itself, but the scenic drive from the Bellarine Highway to Ocean Grove on the Wallington Road. To emerge at the top of the last hill and catch a first glimpse of the river and the ocean is enough to remind me why I live here. While it may not be very original to say, the ocean and beaches are to me the best things about Ocean Grove. The romantic notion that the next stop across the ocean is Antarctica is a fascinating idea for a northern hemisphere boy! Yet, I do not think that that scenic drive on the Wallington Rd will last much longer. Even in the short time we have lived here, the ‘townscape’ has changed quite dramatically. Ocean Grove is growing fast and not always according to the needs of the local community and the environment, but rather that of a shameless property market. While it could be that in ten years Ocean Grove may have transformed

into yet another suburb, the growth in population I assume can only be beneficial to local businesses (and it has brought us a swimming pool). Thus, as a mayor, rather than attract large chain stores (eg Country Target), I would promote opportunities for locally owned small businesses within the town centre. Not only would this be more beneficial to the ‘local’ economy but also to the community at large. Moreover, it would facilitate Ocean Grove to retain a unique character. Now, if I could open a shop in Ocean Grove and afford the ridiculously high rents, I would launch a... No, sorry I cannot say, just in case. .. My partner and I run Ekko Creatives, an art and craft studio/retail space for children, in Geelong so our association with local Ocean Grove organisations is limited. Having said that, this time each year, we are involved with Surfside Primary school, to design the promotional material for the school’s Fresh Food Fair. The highlight of my daily routine is to get up before 6am and the dog and I go for a run to the beach where I do some exercises. There is nothing like a deserted beach in the morning. I practice Shinkyokushin Karate in Barwon Heads and as a sport karate can be quite demanding (and also very rewarding), so keeping fit is important. On the way back home in the evening, I would go shopping and it is generally then that I pick up a copy of the Ocean Grove Voice. I find the OGV to be a good local newspaper. It does what it is meant to do: provide us (locals) with news that is relevant and informative. I would not want to change any of it.

Nearby town still full of grandeur

A chance to look under that grass roof HAVE you ever wondered what happens in the grass roofed building at Queenscliff? On November 8 you will have the opportunity to visit the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Queenscliff Centre and discover how the 100 staff and students located there contribute to the everyday wealth and wellbeing of Victorians. You can learn how the DPI is working with Victoria’s primary and energy industries to face the challenges and opportunities of the future. DPI Queenscliff Centre Leader Julie Murphy said Queenscliff is home to Victoria’s largest marine science centre. “Researchers at the site deliver robust scientific information and innovative new technologies, products and practices to secure, share and grow our fisheries resources for the benefit of the community,” Mrs Murphy said.

“We also deliver education and monitoring services that provide for the sustainable use and management of natural aquatic resources worldwide. “At the open day you will be able to speak with leading researchers and learn more about what we are doing to enhance and protect our fisheries and the environment.” DPI Queenscliff also hosts the Marine Discovery Centre which will be running free activities for all the family on the day. This is a great opportunity for children and adults to get up close to some of the marine animals which live in Port Phillip Bay through handson activities. Mrs Murphy said the Open Day is also a great opportunity for those interested in pursuing a career in marine science to hear and see first-hand what the job actually involves. “The Victorian Marine Science

Consortium (VMSC) is also based at the site. The VMSC, made up from five Victorian tertiary institutions, together with CSIRO, EPA Victoria and DPI, operates marine teaching and research laboratories at Queenscliff,” she said. “This is where many marine science postgraduate students conduct their research.” Visitors will also have the chance to tour the building, unique in its own right. Nestled on the edge of Swan Bay, the environmental design of the DPI building demonstrates how business can operate sustainably, having minimal impact on the surrounding landscape and environment, even when situated on the edge of a Marine National Park. Open Day activities include: • Laboratory demonstrations - a fish’s life! • Marine Discovery Centre activities,

Ocean Grove’s Mood Support Group recently celebrated its third year. The group meets at the Neighbourhood Centre and offers a supportive place to meet and chat in a friendly and non-judgemental environment. Kris Haywood offers her experiences. MY introduction to mental health was being arrested, handcuffed, placed into the back of a divvy van and driven to the psychiatric ward in October 1999. A few days in isolation, a diagnosis of Bipolar, eight days later I was home, that was the day I turned 45. Today I am 55 and I speak with the experience of living with a diagnosed mental illness for 10 years. I speak to others who have shared my experience in our mood support group. We have just celebrated our third year with cake and candles. This group has been one of the major contributing factors affecting my recovery. I highly recommend peer support groups of any kind for empathy not sympathy and no judgment. This group has led me now to being co facilitator, consumer advocate and consultant, SHADES and Mental Health First Aid participant. I have attended numerous Forums and been a member of a Focus Group on stigma for SANE Australia. I have listened to some fantastic guest speakers, great discussions and activities, all the while receiving care and support, forming friendships and of late many, many laughs, always a smile. Remember Muffember? Insight is something that you cannot have enough of, insight into your own illness. The Group provides information and knowledge. We act as a referral service which can be a direction on where to go next. I learnt to empower

myself so I could ask questions about my treatment and participated in mental health research in Bipolar and depression. I have often said that lithium has saved my life, the oldest mood stabilizer there is. Lithium is the lightest metal on the planet and I take it in a salt form, not a battery form, they still don’t know why it works but it does. I have not had a severe manic episode for 10 years thereby staying out of hospital, is my definition of recovery. Acceptance of my illness and the life style changes that came with it played a huge part in my recovery. The relief that came with the diagnosis, that there was something wrong with me. So the last 10 years has been a process of slowly rebuilding my life from the beginning. It’s here that I say that I was born with Bipolar and an earlier diagnosis would have saved me a lot of pain and grief. I have been described as a Community Leader and my life has always been full, probably because of my Bipolar and the way I have lived my life accordingly. The group is a place where I can, we all can, express ourselves fully and revel in the pure joy of that. There are not too many places left on earth where you can do that. This is what the Group means to me. Kris Haywood. For more information on the Mood Support Group contact the Neighbourhood Centre on 5255 4294

Sophie Read’s mesmerising ‘Headspace’ entry was awarded the inaugural Elvis Parsley Award at the conclusion of the pARTy art show. Fair was a perfect day PERFECT weather, a constant stream of arrivals and endless things to keep the family occupied helped make Surfside’s Fresh Food Fair a winner on Sunday. The aim of the fair is to raise much needed funds to complete the school’s Kitchen Garden project. They are half way to building a classroom kitchen and need hard cash to buy some of the more technical and hardware finishings that will help compete it. During the day visitors had a chance to look around the kitchen and the vegetable gardens as well as taste some of its produce. Elsewhere during the fair, visitors were able to enjoy music from Suspicious Aloysius, Mischievious Thom and Surfside School Band as well as dancing from KC Dance group and senior students while youngsters went on train rides, peddle cars, and a swing merry-go-round.

Celebrating the life of the late Bert Fenton: High Flyer author Ian Whitlock, Bert’s widow Dot and District Governor Robert Gilchrist cut a cake at a special book launch held at the Royal Hotel in Queenscliff. Members of Lions, his church in Tareeda Way and flying friends joined together to pay tribute to their friend and colleague. Mr Whitelock compiled much of the book with Bert’s help and would regularly visit him to interview him. Unfortunately Bert passed away earlier this year, just short of celebrating 50 years in the Lions organisation.

Our Wedding

Wedding Feature Making your wedding party the best Want your reception to get the thumbs up from all your guests? Want them to remember it for all the right reasons for years to come? Here are 10 tips to find out what you shouldn’t leave to chance… 1 - Choose a style/theme Before you start looking for your venue, decide on the type of reception you want. A mega bash with a cast of thousands is going to require a very different locale than an intimate gathering for friends and family. Then decide on a theme. It could be something specific which means something to you as a couple: 2 - Pick the decor Even if you don’t have Martha Stewart on hand you can still create a magical reception. Do a little research - check out interior decorating books, bridal magazines and even your favourite restaurants. Pay particular attention to details such as shapes, textures and colours. Will these work for your celebration? 3 - Don’t under-cater Food and drink really do make the event and good choices here will put everyone in party mode. Even on a limited budget you should never skimp on this aspect of the wedding. If guests start grumbling about the lack of food and drink or worse, start leaving early because they are ‘still starving’ the mood will go downhill fast. 4 - Entertain with ease Whether you choose a band or a DJ, make sure that they complement your tastes as a couple and the tone of your celebration. For example, you don’t want 80s dance tunes at an Old Hollywood wedding. When interviewing a DJ, ask to see pictures from prior events, if available. Ask what their selection and library consists of. You want someone who is not so low-key that they put everyone to sleep, and not so over-the-top that your guests feel intimidated. A professional will gauge and work the crowd. 5 - Add a personal touch Let your guests really share in your relationship with personal vows and toasts. Name assigned tables after places that you and your fiancé have travelled to or favourite movies. 6 - Thank your guests Your family and friends will have gone to some expense to enjoy your wedding with you, with many of them travelling long distances. Make sure that you show your appreciation. If you have a lot of out-of-town guests, consider

leaving a welcome basket in their rooms. 7 - Celebrate the cocktail hour While you are having your photographs taken, enjoying the first moments of being husband and wife (and possibly breathing a big sigh of relief) your guests will start arriving at your reception venue. While they await your grand arrival, be thoughtful about the atmosphere you create for them. Ensure there is plenty of parking nearby, have all entrances clearly signed, choose some soft music to play in the background and organise drinks and maybe even nibblies to greet them. 8 - Assign your seating Not everyone will agree with this, of course, but it can save guests a lot of stress on the day. Couples will usually sit together anyway but where there is no allocated seating a single guest may feel lost as to where to park. 9 - Get the party started Nobody likes to be the first on the dance floor but, as you are the centre of attention, everyone will follow your lead. So be brave (after all, you chose the music!) and it’s likely that your guests will have the confidence to follow suit. Make sure that you are social. 10 - Get help A wedding coordinator will not only listen to all the ideas, dreams and desires you have for your wedding (even when everyone else is totally over it) but they will help make them real. If not, enlist a trusted family member or friend to act like a pro and be your guardian angel on the day. After all, married life is meant to be bliss!

New facilities under Lake Connewarre concept plan RECREATIONAL opportunities including walking tracks, rest points and an observation deck are part of a concept plan for Taits Point at Lake Connewarre on the Bellarine Peninsula. Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings today announced the concept plan which is part of the Brumby Labor Government’s Barwon River Parklands project to create continuous parklands along the Barwon River. “Victoria’s parks, lakes and rivers are natural assets that create tourism dollars and employment which is why the Brumby Labor Government is taking action to improve their amenity and accessibility for all Victorians to enjoy,” Mr Jennings said. “The Barwon River Parklands project will establish a continuous parklands link along the Barwon River running from

Buckley Falls, through the heart of Geelong, connecting it to the sea at Barwon Heads. “As part of the project the Taits Point concept plan outlines a range of initiatives that will improve access to Lake Connewarre and visitor enjoyment.” Mr Jennings said the plans for the popular picnic, boating and fishing destination included an observation deck, picnic and car parking facilities, revegetation work with indigenous plants, walking tracks, rest points and interpretive information signs. A weed control program will also be undertaken. The works, to be conducted by Parks Victoria through a cooperative management with land managers along that section of the Barwon River, are expected to commence by mid next year with completion expected in June 2011.

“The Barwon River is integral to the natural environment of Geelong and is the source of most of Geelong’s water supply. It feeds several lakes, including Lake Connewarre,” Mr Jennings said. “The Barwon River Parklands project has been running for the past two years and follows the Government’s commitment to establish parklands to invest in a liveable, sustainable future for Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula.” Lake Connewarre is situated in one of the largest estuaries in Western Victoria and forms part of an internationally significant wetland that is protected under the RAMSAR convention and provides habitat to a number of endangered migratory bird species.

We conserve, present and enhance the natural & developed coastal environs for the enjoyment and use of all

BARWON COAST Did you know that unlike most of the developed world Victoria is blessed with a legacy of 96% of its coastline being in public ownership ie The State. More than two-thirds of that coastal crown land is reserved as national park, coastal park, marine park or marine sanctuary mostly managed by Parks Victoria Most of the remaining crown land is reserved for public purposes managed mainly by Committees of Management such as the Barwon Coast Committee of Management. We were established 18 years ago to manage 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks (near Black Rock) including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach.

Ocean Grove thru to the Barwon Heads bridge – this being a project under the banner of the Barwon River Parklands . The Landscape Plan will also address the need to provide appropriate access to 18W where Barwon Coast is funding Life Guards over summer, ensuring a patrolled beach adjacent to the camping ground. A draft of the Landscape Plan should be available for review by campers and others over summer.

Within that area of management we operate two large coastal caravan parks ie the Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Summer Camping area, the surplus funds from which enable our coastal management activities to be undertaken at no cost to the local community.

Hodgson St Car Park The car park at the bottom of Hodgson St Ocean Grove is a very popular access point to the ocean beach. Whilst not a patrolled beach area, the area is popular with dog owners being the access point to the beach area where dogs are permitted under effective control and where picnic tables are provided for great views of the coast.

We are also the appointed manager of the local Port of Barwon Heads whose waters extend from the Barwon Heads Bluff to Sheepwash Rd Barwon Heads.

The pedestrian cycling trail from Collendina thru to Barwon Heads along the coast also adjoins the car park.

Riverside Camping Ground Ocean Grove As you travel between Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads in peak summer you would have noticed the large number of campers that suddenly appear on the river side of the sand spit. This is the Riverside Camping Ground that we operate for 6 weeks a year as an unpowered camping opportunity with over 200 sites. Those who have lived in the region for a number of years may well remember that camping was also allowed on the Ocean side of the spit but this was stopped to enable the fragile coastal vegetation to recover. With decisions having been made as to the location of the replacement Barwon Heads bridge and Barwon Water resolving where the new sewer main will cross the sand spit and the Barwon River, we are now able to undertake a full review of the area and have engaged consultants to prepare a draft Landscape Management Plan. The key matters to be addressed in the Landscape Masterplan include the retention of the six week camping season on the riverside of the road and reviewing the existing provision of amenity blocks with the potential reduction in numbers, with more strategically located and more environmentally sustainable facilities. We are also investigating the best linkage from the existing Barwon Estuary walk in

We have now received from local landscape architects a draft of the masterplan that proposes the redevelopment of the car park to provide for safer traffic movement; a better interface with the pedestrian / cycling trail; improved stormwater management and revegetation work. Consultation with adjacent property owners will occur in the near future followed by the general display of the landscape plan prior to lodging the plans with DSE for Coastal Management Act consent Beach Access works We are currently undertaking a significant program of maintenance works on our beach access tracks including those at Aldebaran Road to address the inland section where scouring of the graded surface has been a problem, and to construct landscape steps Another project being the construction of a set of elevated timber stairs at beach access 17W (horseshoe car park) on the Ocean Grove Spit. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager

Nature watch: Kingston Park Kingston Park is divided into three distinct areas- the camping ground, the bushland and the grassy area near the playground. Lorikeets are found in all three areas. The camping ground is home to many Noisy Miners, which is an extremely territorial bird

that will aggressively defend an area against all invaders, and chase away much bigger birds such as Magpies and Currawongs. The bushland has hidden treasures if you take the time to look. When exploring the inner trails I came across a family of Fantails and

several Thornbills, all seemingly oblivious to the presence of two large Currowongs. I also saw a Black Faced Cuckoo Shrike and the beautiful Eastern Rosella. By Jennifer Carr

Discovering our Nature Reserve

SCORES of locals and visitors took advantage of a day of activities at Ocean Grove Nature Reserve last month. The open day featured talks and walks explaining the contrasts in vegetation and wildlife that

occupy the park as well as a chance to plant seedlings and ask questions about ongoing work to reduce fuel loads in the park. Throughout the day there was also the chance to enjoy lunch and refreshments at

the park, live music and opportunities to join the active Friends Group. The Friends Group, along with Parks Victoria, monitors and helps maintain the information centre and surrounds.

AFTER convincingly winning the Geelong Secondary Schools Netball Competition back in May as well as the Western Zone Level of the competition back in August, Bellarine Secondary College set off for the State Championships! On Friday September 4 Bellarine Secondary College’s year 7 girls netball team headed off to the State Netball Centre in Melbourne to compete in the Victorian Secondary Schools State Finals. To make it this far the girls had been undefeated at every level of the competition. An amazing effort! The girls first match was against Vermont Secondary. The team were very nervous and Bellarine were down 6 goals at half time but fought incredibly hard during the second half to snatch the win 15-13. Kelsey Ollis’ and Jayne Fendyk’s interceptions were outstanding and Molly Babb’s shooting accuracy of 90% was brilliant. The second match was against Melbourne Girls College. The girls had an easy win, winning 25 to 14. Aimee Lindrea, Ashlee Gray and Rachael Leeson worked well on the wing and Georgia McNeill’s terrific defence work resulted in many turn overs. The third match was against Korrumburra. This was an important match as a win would have the girls finishing on top of the ladder in their pool. It was a very tough match with numerous rebounds, interceptions and brilliant passes. At ¾ time the girls were down by 2 goals. Some changes were made and Zana Woods defence along with Kirsten Smith’s brilliant foot work and dynamite passes helped the girls win by 2 goals. After winning all 3 pool matches and finishing on top of their section, the girls then played in the Victorian Secondary Schools State semi final against Frankston. The girls made an amazing

impression, scoring the first 7 goals of the match. With Zana and Molly’s pin point accuracy with their shooting, Kelsey and Georgia’s outstanding defence, consistent hard running and smooth passing by Jayne and Kirsten as well as the tight pressure Rachael, Ashlee and Aimee created, the girls had an easy win, finishing 27-15. Immediately after this match they were to fight out the State Grand Final for either a gold or silver medal. The match was Bellarine verse Wanganui. Both teams had finished on top of the ladder in their respective sections and had been undefeated throughout the entire competition. It was bound to be a tough match and great display of netball skills. Bellarine put up an incredible fight but were beaten by Wanganui in the end. This meant that Bellarine Secondary College’s year 7 girls finished second in the entire State in the Victorian Secondary Schools Netball Competition, The girls received silver medals for their effort. An outstanding result! Congratulations to all team members for their amazing team work and the proud manner in which they have represented Bellarine at all levels of the competition. (Jayne Fendyk, Georgia McNeill, Kelsey Ollis, Kirsten Smith, Zanna Woods, Molly Babb, Aimee Lindrea, Ashlee Gray, Rachael Leeson) A huge thankyou to all the parents and family members who have supported and encouraged the girls at all levels of the competition as they fought their way to being one of the best two Year 7 netball teams in the state. A special thankyou to Andrea Dunlop, Judy and Greg Ollis and Jan Woods for making the trip to Melbourne for the state finals, for their help with scoring and organisation on the day and their constant support for the girls.

So after nearly 10 years of thinking about it, Laureena enrolled in a Beauty Therapy course and succeeded in achieving her diploma in 2004. “Over the next few years I had the privilege of working as

a beauty therapist in some truly wonderful beauty salons and day spas. This experience gave me quite an insight into my likes and dislikes within the industry. My number one dislike being pressure sales and my number one like being working in a oneon-one environment.” After lengthy consideration, Laureena decided upon setting up her own business. “With my likes and dislikes in mind, together with cost factors, a professional home salon was decided upon.

“By choosing a home salon I would have considerably less overheads than most shop fronts. This meant I could offer my clients highly discounted services without compromising on service time or quality. Thus… Salon Grove was created.” The salon is situated in a private room at the front of Laureena’s home at 7 Bungara Court, Ocean Grove. Tastefully decorated, the salon incorporates a bright bathroom and a beautifully heated shower room. The main salon room is heated and air

conditioned and is back dropped with relaxing surround sound every bit like your luxury beauty salon. Salon Grove offers personalized, professional, appointment only beauty services. Services include waxing, lash and brow tinting, relaxation massage, spa manicures, spa pedicures, spray tans, gel nails, mineral salt scrubs, eyelash perming and special occasion make-up. “I am passionate about beauty therapy and it is a perfect way for me to express my creative side.”

Guide to going greener

Terry Robinson.

BUILDING consultant Terry Robinson has focussed his attention on energy management of established homes. Terry who has been living in Ocean Grove for the past 12 years said that household expenditure on energy and water is most people’s largest outlay other than food, and larger than spending on car fuel. He says that if households can save just 10% on energy and water outlays they are not only doing themselves a favour, but can also help reduce our greenhouse emissions. “I am increasingly conscious of the energy inefficiency of dwellings,” he said. “Consequently, my focus is

now that of energy management of established homes. “Most recently I have been carrying out household sustainability assessments for the Australian Government Department of The Environment.” He pointed out that the Australian Government is now offering a range of free assessments and grants to help residents make changes. Terry’s creditials lie in building design and construction. “I have tertiary qualifications in both building design and construction management and over the past 5 years the majority of my work has involved building auditing (or building condition reports).” Relating his work to Ocean

Grove he said: “I think it’s a great place to live and work. Most of my 30 years experience in the building and construction industries have been in the residential area and for many years I specialised in the construction of architectdesigned homes.” His passions outside of work include live music (especially the Queenscliff Music Festival). “I am incredibly jealous of anyone who was fortunate enough to make it to The Black Eyed Susans gig at the Northcote Social Club on the weekend. “I also enjoy competitive road cycling and race most Sundays with the Geelong Veteran Cycling Club at Paraparap, near Moriac.”

Try Bowls organisers Peter Crammond, Val Crumbie, Joyce Fraser and Anne Brown.

Madeliyn, Megan and Jesse were among the those that took a chance to Try Bowls.
