LIGHT UP AND SHOP OCEAN Grove is set to be more festive than ever this year, thanks to late night shopping and a new ‘Light up the Grove’ competition. Organisers say nearly all the town’s shopkeepers are on board the Friday

December 11 late night shop, while entries have started coming in for the Grove’s exciting new home and business switch on. In addition, final preparations for the town’s traditional Carols in the Park are also being completed. Details page 3 and 8.

TRIBUTES TO LUKE

Before July of this year Dulcie and John hadn’t set eyes on each other for 62 years. Back then they had wanted to get married but both sets of parents said ‘no, wait, you’re too young’. John wanted a motorbike and Dulcie wanted to meet other people and they went their separate ways. Last week at Ocean Grove’s Christ Church they finally said ‘I do’. Full story page 3

THE sudden death of a 27-year-old man out walking along the Barwon River has shocked and saddened the town. Luke Hercus, pictured right, was walking along the river with family and his fiance Lisa on Sunday morning last week when he appears to have had a massive heart attack. Sadly, despite the best efforts of medics, they were unable to save him. Luke, who has lived in the Grove for four years, was extremely fit and was planning to run a half ironman on the weekend just gone. He also played soccer for Surfside Waves last season. Federal MP Darren Cheeseman fielded a range of questions during his recent visit to a Ocean Grove Community Association meeting. Among those who got a chance to put their concerns across were mothers Katelyn McGregor, Melissa McFarlane and Emily Bennett who are concerned about the current proposals for home birthing.

Shell Refinery to Shell Road FEDERAL MP Darren Cheeseman was in Ocean Grove this month to address a lively community association meeting, two years into his election term. On top of his agenda at the Grove Centre was the lead up to the Copenhagen climate conference The successor to the Kyoto protocol, this is the latest international bid to tackle climate change. Mr Cheeseman also localised the issue by explaining the importance of protecting jobs at large ‘brown coal’ industries like Shell, Blue Circle Cement and Alcoa while

recognising that large areas of land “between Barwon Heads and Queenscliff ” would be “inundated” by rising sea levels being predicted by climate change models. Later in the evening Mr Cheeseman also took questions on the Shell Road Reserve. He reiterated that many sporting facilities in Ocean Grove are “a disgrace’ but that local sporting clubs would need to work together and submit a plan before funding could be discussed at any level. Melissa McFarlane, president of the Geelong branch of the Maternity Coalition, also took

the opportunity to question Mr Cheeseman’s personal belief on home birthing in relation to proposed legislation changes. Mr Cheeseman who explained that his own mother was a midwife said that he was very supportive of women having the choice, where the pregnancy is following a normal path. However he also suggested that there was a need to ensure professionals are adequately insured to carry out home birthing. He suggested that MPs are working to agree a stance that will satisfy all sides.

AFTER exploring the new Ocean Grove Plaza (aka Target) complex, 13 year old son Ben and mate Alex found themselves locked in the underground carpark after the automatic locking system activated approximately 5pm on a Saturday afternoon. The local police contacted a complex representative who assisted in their release after about 1 hour trapped inside. “There did not appear to be any warning and had it not been for their mobile phones they could have been trapped inside a lot longer,” said Ben’s dad Tony Potter who added “both families fortunately saw the funny side of this and bought the boys some peanuts and fed them through the grill gates.”

Record bookings OCEAN Grove Park’s Car Boot Sale next week will have more bargains than ever with record numbers of sellers booking a pitch to sell goods. Usually the average is about 30 stalls at their Park’s boot sales but this time around more than 50 are already signed up. Co-organiser Wilma Tribe said the committee were thrilled with the interest and hope that locals will take the opportunity to visit the sale from 8.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday November 28.

Ron Wylie passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on October 31. Dearly loved husband of Marg. Loved father of Kim, Carol, Sue and Angela. Special Dad to Allison. Father-in-law of John, Darren, Alan, Ken and Steven. Proud Poppa of Hannah, Harry and George; Ruby and Hazel; Stefanie, Jesse and Phoebe. Dear brother to Joan. Mr Wylie was a member of Probus and a keen golfer, bowler and bridge player at Ocean Grove clubs.

Festive late night shop THE introduction of twilight Christmas shopping promises to give the town an early festive boost. And it should demonstrate that Ocean Grove has all you need to do your Christmas shopping. The event is being held on Friday December 11 and will feature most shops and eateries opening from

5pm to 9pm. As well as late night opening, there will be outdoor stalls, a barbecue, face painting, a kids Christmas craft corner and of course a visit from Santa. Adding to the yuletide spirit, the Salvation Army Band and Ocean Grove Community Choir will both

be performing on the night. Ocean Grove’s Carols in the Park will also be held on the Sunday of that weekend, promising to keep the festive spirit well and truly alive. For full details on the Carols and the new Ocean Grove Christmas Light up the Grove competition turn to page 8.

Love conquers BETTER late than never has never been more an apt saying when it comes to Dulcie Good and John Mulder. The couple finally tied the knot last Saturday, 62 years after they first became engaged in a ceremony held at the Church of Christ in Ocean Grove. Dulcie, 83 and John 82, first met at 16 years old and were together for three years. They planned to marry but their parents were adamant they were too young and the couple eventually went their separate ways losing track of each other for over 60 years Dulcie always knew there was something special about her first love even though she was happily married with children. “There was always something, you know, every now and again something would come into my mind,” she said fiddling with the blue opal pendant that John gave her on her 21st birthday. Dulcie kept the pendant throughout the years reminding her of John. “I’d get it out every now and again and wear it,” she said. From the couple’s reunion in July of this year, the pendant hasn’t come off Dulcie’s neck. “When we met again it’s stayed on and hasn’t come off,” she said. John planned to replace the pendant with a new one on their wedding day to commemorate the start of the next chapter of their lives together. John recalls the exact date of their chance reunion on July 27 of this year. Both attended a memorial service for a mutual friend at their original church in North Geelong.

Finally: Dulcie and John are married.

Intending to find Dulcie again, John went to the service hoping to run into her. Not knowing her married name proved a problem though and after some initial inquiries at the service, John was told that Dulcie had passed away 13 years ago. “When he heard that news he thought ‘ohh that’s it I won’t find her now’,” said Dulcie. Heartbroken, John went to leave the service where out of 200 people, he ran into the friend Dulcie had come with who then re-introduced them. Not recognising each other at first, it wasn’t until Dulcie asked the gentleman’s name that they were properly reunited. “I believe we put on quite a show,” she said. “And we just knew as soon as we met that yes we’re going to go through with it this time.” Even though they both knew they were going to finish what they had begun all those years ago, Dulcie still insisted on a traditional proposal. “I said hang on I haven’t heard the question yet,” Dulcie said. After John got down on one knee,

Dulcie couldn’t help showing her wicked sense of humour. “Oh John this is so sudden,” she replied after he popped the question. “Then I said yes quickly in case he changed his mind,” she said. The sun shone down over the first wedding ever held at the Tareeda way church and the happy couple couldn’t keep their eyes off each other as they held hands throughout the ceremony. Wearing a rose pink robe over a champagne dress Dulcie had kept the colour of her dress a secret from everyone so that John would be surprised when she walked down the aisle on the day. “It had to be pink, (John’s) memories of me are in a pink satin dress at my 21st birthday party,” she said. In awe of his bride, John couldn’t keep his eyes off of Dulcie throughout the day. “I don’t think I saw her lovelier than today,” he said. Their children gave both of them away with Dulcie’s son Greg Pope travelling all the way from Thursday Island to walk his mum down the aisle. “It’s pretty awesome, they’re very very happy,” Greg said. Dulcie and her maid of honour Beverley Kilsby both carried a bouquet of red, pink and yellow roses grown in John’s garden. John’s son Greg Mulder was Best Man and pointed out what every wedding guest could see. “I’ve never seen him happier,” he said. When asked if he took Dulcie as his lawfully wedded wife, John jokingly replied, “I’ve waited a long time and I certainly will.” The couple are convinced that their love was meant to be and after 62 years of waiting, who can blame them? “I lost her once, I’m not going to lose her again,” John said with a smile.

Tributes flow after cruel loss IN four years Luke Hercus embraced everything about living in Ocean Grove. He worked hard and played hard because he wanted to make the most of life. He was fit and loved the outdoors with a passion. He was also engaged to be married next year, having proposed to Lisa Tout on the steps of the Sydney Opera House back in June. But last Sunday Luke suddenly collapsed while out walking along the Barwon River with his fiancé and family and sadly could not be revived. What has shocked many is that Luke was just 27 and extremely fit. As well as being a triathlete he had been planning a half ironman on the Sunday just gone. In fact he had run 20km in training earlier on the morning that he died. Although his family confirmed that Luke did have a pre-existing heart condition they will not know if that was the cause until the coroner’s reports are finalised. Luke’s brothers Jimmy and Brad and Lisa travelled up to his birthplace and family

home in Bendigo for the funeral on Monday. Jimmy told the Voice that his brother had embraced the spirit of the Grove since moving here. “He loved being down the beach walking the dogs which is unfortunately what he was doing when it all happened. He loved the triathlons. He started the triathlons when he moved to Ocean Grove. He ran the Great Ocean Road Marathon just gone in May. “On Sunday he was supposed to do a half ironman in Shepperton. He was very fit. He had gone for a 20km run a bit earlier that morning but at the time we were doing nothing, just walking along the beach. “He did have a preexisting heart condition but we’re not sure at the moment as the coroner is doing an ongoing investigation. I wouldn’t want to pre-empt it.” Jimmy explained that the Great Ocean Road Marathon was Luke’s first marathon, and the previous year he’d done two half marathons. “He was always involved in the Anaconda down at Lorne, he done at least one of the legs in the last three years. He

was involved in the Mars Challenge, as well as the triathlons, Gatorade and that.” As a tribute Jimmy, his future father-in-law Geoff Bradley and Chris Lacy completed Luke’s ironman in his honour on Sunday, and did it in good time. Jimmy said that locals and organisers gave them a fantastic reception and great support. Luke worked for the Bendigo Bank in Geelong and was previously a primary school teacher who put in the hours to retrain for a commerce degree. Recalling the school time “He really enjoyed outdoor ed,” said Jimmy. “He just loved the outdoors and was very passionate about the outdoors. “(Luke was) kind generous, fun loving. He left an impression on everyone he met. It was just the kind of person he was. “Whatever he wanted he would do it. “He really wanted to do a full ironman. He only got involved in triathlons when he moved to Ocean Grove. That was his home down there. He loved it down there.” Luke was also involved

Luke Hercus (right) after running the Great Ocean Road Half Marathon with his brother Jimmy (left).

in setting up a charity called PAN, which stands for People, Animal, Nature, and aims to provide Animal therapy for kids at risk of leaving school. PAN is based in Geelong. The family asked that donations be made to PAN in lieu of flowers. Jimmy said they had been inundated with calls from people wanting to express their sadness at Luke’s loss. Luke and Jimmy also played soccer for Surfside Waves last season, helping

them make the division 3 finals. Waves president Mark Rapa said the club was deeply saddened by the news. “I always found him to be a friendly and approachable and all round nice guy,” said Mark. “He was a great player in my eyes. He played division 3s but I think he could easily have played 1s. I think he was happy just playing. He was a great team person. He really will be sorely missed.”

Accident waiting to happen Dear Editor With reference to your article in The Voice (November 4-7) I would like to point out the danger of the intersection of Presidents Avenue and The Parade where traffic lights are becoming essential. One has to drive almost into the intersection from The Parade (opposite Target) in order to see past parked cars for on-coming traffic. The same problem occurs venturing across Presidents Avenue from The Avenue. There is an accident waiting

to happen, especially when the summer traffic arrives. If there is to be a Pedestrian crossing from The Ocean Plaza and The Grove Community Centre it should be at The Avenue intersection. Traffic Lights at the Parade Intersection would assist vehicles turning right into Presidents Avenue from the Parade and if there was a ‘crossing’ there at ‘lights’, all traffic would then have to give way to pedestrians, thus causing a blockage! H. Scott Ocean Grove

Act of kindness Dear Editor My family and I recently spent a lovely day at Ocean Grove. On returning home to Melbourne I discovered that I had left my shoes behind on the beach. My sister fortunately knew someone who lived in the vicinity and cheekily asked if they could have a look for the shoes, which they kindly did. They found them perched on a post (apparently locals place things on posts at high tide).

I just wanted to say thank you to “Rod who not only found them but delivered them to my sister and also to the person who thought to place them on the post. With all the horror stories and nastiness that seems to be dogging the media that can so easily bring one down the kindness of the aforementioned people is much appreciated. GET A CROSS SUNNY SMILES AT THE FAIR

Local residents are risking their lives every day crossing Presidents Avenue between The Grove Community Centre and the new Ocean Grove plaza, writes Carly Helweg.

Currently there are no permanent pedestrian crossings on Presidents Avenue putting elderly people and children using the library and community health centre during the day at risk trying to reach The Terrace shopping strip. The Community Association has taken up the issue. Story page 3.

THE sun certainly shone on Surfside Primary School’s Fresh Food Fair at the weekend.

After months of organising by teachers, parents and pupils , the fair – the major fundraiser for the school’s developing kitchen classroom – was lapped up by locals and visitors. The comment by so many was there was just ‘heaps to do’. As the hazy morning warmed up crowds were thick in the grounds enjoying music, fairground rides, food stalls, honey tasting, veggie planting, rabbit patting – even Harley rides. Happy in the country town I’ve lived in Ocean Grove all my life. I grew up in the same house with my family of six. The house backed onto a park and was walking distance from school – Ocean Grove Primary. I lived in that same house for 23 years and in the last two years I have built a house of my own in Ocean Grove. My first memory would have to be riding my bike everywhere, from one side of Ocean Grove to the other. I would also have

to say the beach in summer; coming home from school and heading straight to the beach and meeting up with friends. Ocean Grove has changed and grown a lot in the years, which I think is inevitable. I remember my dad saying jokingly when I was younger “when Ocean Grove gets traffic lights we’re moving”. But we never did. It is too nice a place and a great place to have grown up in. With all the new shops and Target

opening, now I think we’ve got it all covered for a small town. I don’t find myself having to go to Geelong for much anymore . . . I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing! One thing I think would be nice would be a place to get fresh seafood. I get a lot of people asking me, especially the tourists over summer, and also I like seafood. I work Monday to Friday at the Ocean Grove Newsagency and

out of work I enjoy painting, bike riding, kayaking and walking my two Staffie pups. I am very family oriented, so spend a lot of time with them as well. My favourite part of Ocean Grove would be the river, as I really love the river. I don’t think I would change much in Ocean Grove, as long as it keeps it’s country town feel. You still have to be able to walk down the street and get a smile off a few familiar faces.

Lance’s light show EVERY December, the Irwin’s transform their home into a Christmas wonderland just to put smiles on local children’s faces. Lance and Belinda Irwin have been decorating their house for longer than they can remember beginning when their grown up children were very young. “We used to dress [the kids] up and they would run around the front handing out lollies,” Lance said. “Now it’s bah humbug.” Belinda usually starts the plans for the next Christmas design as soon as the current decorations come down. The worn out ones are thrown out and the shopping for next year can begin as soon as boxing day. “I generally buy more straight after Christmas when they’re cheaper,” Belinda said.

All the hard work begins in November with the Irwins lighting up their Bonnyvale road home on December 1. Once the lights are up and glowing, they spend most of their December nights entertaining those who come round to admire their handiwork. Lance speaks of a 92 year old lady from the Bellarine Peninsula who comes every year to see their decorations. “She thanks us every year for putting up our Christmas lights,” said Belinda, proving that not only the young but the young at heart can take pleasure in the decorations. However it’s seeing the excitement on visiting children’s faces that help the Irwins put the lights up year after year. “That’s the best part, seeing their little

faces light up,” said Belinda. As Ocean Grove’s resident Christmas lights expert, Lance has a few tips to help out those who want to do as good a job as they do. “LED is so much better, so much brighter,” he said referring to the types of Christmas lights available. Not only do they glow brighter than the old fashioned type but they are kinder to your power bill.

As electricians, Lance and Belinda are adamant that the lights have to be set up properly to prevent any potential accidents. “Little kids come up and wander around… you gotta be careful,” he said. • Have you entered the Christmas Lights up the Grove competition? See below left for the entry form. Entries need to be returned by next week for judging purposes. You don’t need to have your lights up yet to enter.

Let’s celebrate peace and joy this Christmas and as a community, we can sing our hearts out, and be sure to get there early for a good spot to watch and join

in,” said Jon. Ocean Grove Carols in the Park is presented by the Combined Churches of Ocean Grove and is produced on a large stage with over 40 singers, orchestra, and crew. This year’s special guests are the principals, children and cast from this year’s Queenscliffe Lighthouse Theatre Group’s blockbuster Broadway musical “The Sound of Music” and the very popular 93.9 Bay FM’s Mark Hyland will be host. There will be a major light show for the kids with Santa expected to drop by and everyone can sing along with the many popular carols. The Ocean Grove Carols in the Park is truly a community event staged completely by local volunteers and local retailers with Ocean Grove Park management who will have a BBQ, drinks, tea and coffee on hand. The winners of the “Christmas Lights The Grove” competition will also be announced at the Carols. Bring family and friends and don’t miss Ocean Grove’s largest family event on Sunday 7.30pm, 13 December in Ocean Grove Park, Cnr President Ave. and Draper St. More details: www.oceangrovecarols.org

OCEAN Grove witnessed two wreath laying services on November 11. Ex-servicemen and women were joined by members of the public for the traditional service and minute’s silence in the Parade at 11am and then RSL members marked the establishment of a new monument at Club Grove by a similar wreath laying ceremony.

Grove’s ex-youth club members plan 2010 reunion OCEAN Grove Youth Club members, or OGYOC as they were known, are looking for past members for a reunion to be held next year, writes Carly Helweg. OGYOC began meeting in the early 1950’s however it was officially opened August 1967 for Grove youths aged 10 to 21. The children gathered weekly to participate in activities from ten pin bowling and trips to the cinema to mouth organ lessons. Meetings were held in the Ocean Grove Public Hall situated where the library now is on the corner of Presidents Avenue and The Avenue. Juliana Chapman (nee Wools) was one of the group’s original members with her father Peter

working hard to get the club up and running. “It was a great group at the time, something for the kids of Ocean Grove to do, which perhaps they could do with now too,” said Juliana. A BBQ picnic will be held on Sunday March 21, 2010 at Ocean Grove Park from 12 noon to give past members a chance to catch up and swap photos and stories. “Just a bit of fun to get a few people together,” said Juliana. If you recognise anyone in the photos dating back to 1967, were part of the Ocean Grove Youth Club during the fifties, sixties or seventies or even a relative of someone who was, contact Juliana on 5255 2929 or Neil

Hillbilly hits the hen shop

Gatorbait at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop this weekend.

Clubs meet

Bopping at The Piping Hot Chicken Shop this Friday (November 20) is Gatorbait. Playing their unique blend of rockabilly and early country, the band is a serious set of musicians bound to get you rocking along. Two of them are also members of the mighty Detonators. Based on the early work of Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Johnny Horton, Webb Pierce and Faron Young, Gatorbait try and keep the tradition of roots based rocking country music alive in its purest form. The members of Gatorbait are roots music devotees who have a wealth of experience in the genre and a combined faith and knowledge in the slap back and twang of real rocking hillbilly, from a time when drums were used for parades only. Gatorbait was formed in Melbourne during 2001 and from humble beginnings

has built up a steady following of loyal fans. Gatorbait is Noray Gulian, who strums the acoustic guitar and sings mightily. He’s a former king of The Kingbillies, one of Melbourne’s favorite and well-known rockabilly bands. Then there’s “Doghouse” Dave Philpots, slaps and cracks the mighty Bull Fiddle Bass as well as backing up on the vocals. A Detonator in his other job Paulie “The Kid” Bignell is the twanger and twister of the full-bodied guitar and reverb amp also a Detonator. Bringing the Sun sound to the new millennium. Gatorbait are the most authentic sounding country rocking hillbilly band you will hear, they have honed their sound from a genuine love of the musical style.

The couple aim to be bringing the largest selection of Italian and European porcelain, ceramic wall and floor tiles, glass mosaics and natural stone tiles to the Grove and will build on Terry’s wide experience as a tiler. “As experienced tilers we saw a need to provide good quality tiles from the world’s leading manufacturers,” said Chris. “There are no other suppliers of tiles in this area, and even for tilers they need to spend a significant part of their day travelling to get supplies. We have a full range of tiling tools for the handyman and professional, along with glues, grout, waterproofing, sealers and cleaners.” Terry has been tiling since he started his apprenticeship in Geelong at the age of 16. His family have also been in the building industry so spent many days working with his dad from a young age on worksites. As a tiler he has

worked in Queensland and around Geelong. He has also travelled to Japan to teach them tiling techniques. “Terry’s son is one of our tiling apprentices and he is also looking forward to working in the shop. Our other apprentice is a female, she has been a local of Ocean Grove all her life and enjoys playing cricket on the weekends. “We live in Ocean Grove, and currently run two other businesses, Contours and Inspire Tiling (a tile laying business) both of these will keep operating. “I have been on the Bellarine Peninsula for the last 15 years, and in Ocean Grove for six years. My husband moved here when we were married and we started the tile business. We will both be working in the shop. We have always made it our practice to hire local staff, and have two apprentices currently and will have sales people who live locally. “The reason for opening in Ocean Grove is because this is where we live and work, and

believe that we can provide a service to local tradespeople, professionals and home owners. Even before opening we have been contacted by people needing tiles. “We are both members of the Ocean Grove Golf Club, and enjoy playing when time allows. We like to spend our spare (?) time either playing golf or fishing, and most of the family enjoy spending this time with us as well. We are also helping to plan Terry’s eldest daughters wedding next year in November. “Terry and I coach the Barwon Heads womens soccer team, and I am now the president of the Barwon Heads Soccer Club. I also coach my youngest sons basketball team, he is just turning 12, attends Christian College, and likes to help out at the shop. The shop is open Monday– Friday 8am–5pm and Saturday 8am–12noon. They will also arrange after hours appointments. For more details see: www.tileboutique. com.au

Smart kids win bikes TWO local school pupils have peddled off with new bikes after acting and arguing the case for riding to school. Star of the Sea “1000 Bikes Leadership Program” is sponsored by Bicycle Victoria, and promotes active, sustainable and safe travel for children in Gr 6, as they move into secondary school. Successful students Jasmine Pickett and Anthony Wilkens made

submissions outlining why they deserved to be awarded with a new bike. Anthony wrote: “I think I should win the bike because I ride to school every day when it’s not raining and I think I deserve it because my main form of transport is bike and I always come to the healthy breakfast days and I like to ring friends to come ride with me so I can have some company and then

more people will ride and it will become bigger. So I think I deserve the bike.” Jasmine wrote: “Since Grade 2, I have been walking and riding to school. “As a school leader this term I have decided to help out with the year 4 Bike Ed program.” Jasmine went on to draw reasons why riding to school is a good idea.

ESTABLISHED SINCE 1977

STAR of the Sea pupils Caitlin Pickett and Maddison Traynor recently represented the school at state level, competing at Olympic Park in Melbourne. Caitlyn did really well running in the 1500m and Maddison got a PB in the high jump, earning herself a place at the nationals in Sydney on November 29.

BEGOLA wetlands is a fantastic spot to sit and watch the world go by! There are so many different species of birds to observe. The name ‘Begola’ comes from the local Wathaurong aboriginal community, and it means ‘the place of many frogs’. Certainly the frogs are very vocal at Begola but I have never actually seen one! Luckily the snakes are well hidden as well! The water that runs into Begola Wetlands is supplied through stormwater runoff from part of the Ocean Grove residential area, so people have to be very mindfull of ensuring that plastic bags and other rubbish don’t go

into the stormwater drain. Last summer the wetlands almost completely dried up, and it was reassuring to see the birds return, and hear the frogs again, once the rains came in autumn! Birds that can be seen at Begola include Stilts, Lapwings, Spoonbills, Dotterals, Black Swans, Ducks, Gulls, Swamphens, and Cormorants. In the shrubs around the Wetlands are Wattle birds, Honeyeaters, Thornbills, Willie Wagtails, Magpie Larks, Swallows, Fairy Wrens, Butcherbirds and Starlings. Highlights are the Purple Swamphen, which have long

reddish legs with huge feet; you have to marvel how they manage to walk without tripping up, and of course Latham’s Snipe or Japanese Snipe which migrates from the Northern Hemisphere in the non-breeding season each year. When you see the Latham’s Snipe you have to wonder how such a small bird with a huge beak (7.5cm’s long) would be able to fly such long distances! There are at least three Snipes currently residing at Begola, but they are very timid and well camouflaged, so good luck spotting them! There are several signs asking

dog owners to clean up after their dogs, however it would be fantastic if the COGG could place a rubbish bin on the Tuckfield St side of Begola Wetlands to enable dog owners to dispose of the dog droppings! Thank you COGG!!! P.S. there is a family of Black Swans currently residing at Begola Welands. There were four cygnets hatched, but over the last few weeks there have ony been three. It’s amazing to see them grow, as young cygnets they have very short necks, but after a few weeks the necks start to stretch, as you can see from the sequence above right. By Jennifer Carr

BARWON COAST Barwon Coast, your local coastal foreshore managers, has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate the Barwon Heads Caravan Park & the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove. Our Committee members are all local residents from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and are appointed by the State Government following the public advertising for expressions of interest.

Seals on our Beaches Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads It’s that time of the year again when both adult seals and pups frequent our shores to rest, or if they are sick or injured. To minimise further stress or impact on the seal it is important to understand what’s going on.

Both humans and dogs disturb seals from resting, and compromise the health of the animal. A seal’s automatic defence when on land is to head for the water. If the seal is tired, sick or injured, there is potential that the animal will drown, or become easy prey if it heads back to the water. A weak seal still has the potential to attack in self-defence.

What species do we have visiting?

Be aware that Seals have powerful canine teeth, can weigh well over 250 kilograms, can get up a fast gallop and are capable of climbing sea walls and stairways.

Eared seals include the Australian fur seal, New Zealand fur seal and Australian sea-lions. These seals typically move upright when on land and can move with reasonable agility, and like the name implies have small protruding ears. These species breed on the coast of the Australian mainland, and Tasmania, and near shore islands. True seals include Leopard seals, Elephant seals and Weddell seals. These seals move in a lunging caterpillar-like motion and do not have external ears. They breed on the Antarctic pack-ice or Sub-Antarctic Australian territories, and occasionally haul out on our beaches.

Why are populations low? Seals were hunted in Australia in the last century for their meat, oil and fur. By 1820, seal populations had been reduced to the level that some breeding colonies had been completely destroyed. Although seal populations may be recovering, seals are affected by several human activities such as boating, dog’s off-leash and human activities along the intertidal zone. Today all seals are protected wildlife.

When do we see seals? Seals spend a great deal of time out of the water, so it is not unnatural for them to be on our beach. Peak mating and pupping for most species takes place in the summer months, so generally from November onwards seals, especially seal pups, can be found on our beaches coinciding with the increase in human activities along our coast.

What should I do if I see a seal on the beach? • Keep well away from the seal– do not try to force it back to the water. • Make sure your dog is kept on a leash and away from the seal. Dog diseases can be transferred to seals, in turn potentially infecting a whole seal colony. • If fishing and a seal approaches, slowly retrieve all fishing gear until the animal moves on. This will avoid entanglement with fishing line and avoid hook injuries. • If boating and a seal approaches reduce speed if safe to do so to avoid propeller injuries to the seal. • REPORT sightings of seals on beaches with the exact location and the probable condition of the animal, to the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) on 136 186, or Barwon Coast on 0400 931 893 (for seals found between 7W Collendina-42W Connewarre). Please remember to take all your rubbish home with you. Plastics, ropes, strings and fishing gear pose the greatest threats to seals. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1118 Bob Jordan General Manager

Waves master the west Waves victorious Masters team after secrurring the title with a 3-0 win over Warrnambool.

SURFSIDE Waves Soccer Club is the Southwest Masters Champions. Waves entered the 7-a-side competition by sending eight players to the Warrnambool event, ranging in age from 35-48 years of age. The squad of eight consisted of Mark Rapa, Nick Hargreaves,

Derek Edwards, Andy Hedges, David Woodhouse, Kai Thieme, Andy Adonis and Peter Grozdanovski. The squad trained seriously for six weeks prior to the competition and it paid off. Of the five games they played in the masters they came away with four wins and one draw.

The boys ultimately beat the heavily tipped favourites Warnambool Wolves 3-0 in the final. The win against Warnambool allowed a tired out drained side to compete in the semi-final of the open division against the younger Ballarat Soccer Academy side.

The opposition was young , tough and very fit, but Waves gave them a run for their money, only to go down 2-1. It was an outstanding result considering they were 30 years the Waves team’s juniors. The club has been considering fielding a masters side on a regular basis.

junior cricket Under 17 Everett – Cobras v St Albans Breakwater

Under 17 Everett Collendina Cobras.

Round 1: Welcome back for season 09/10. This year the Under 17’s will be coached by Luke Veitenheimer and led by co-captains Nathan Walter and Andrew Higgins. Week 1; Our first opponents at the “Snake Pit” were Queenscliff and after winning the toss we elected to bat. Openers Nick Rankin & Ash Denneman got us off to a good start and compiled 103 for the opening stand before they got one past Nick. Ash soon followed when the score was 112. Nathan Walter & Andrew Higgins took the score to 150 before Andrew was given out, caught behind. Jacob Gasior then joined Nathan and they put on a further 23 before Nathan was stumped with the score at 173. Joining Jacob was Chris Jansen, and the 2 of them saw us through to end of time with Chris unfortunately getting run out on the last ball as the boys tried to add an extra run to the total. At

the end of the innings the boys had compiled a very good total of 206. Well done fellas considering it was the first game back since last season. Week 2: Time to take the field, and the team continued on from their good form of the first week by capturing their first wicket at 4 and the next at 25. Rain threatened and about 20 mins was lost while the shower went past. Queenscliff settled down a little after the shower, but we soon snared another wicket with the total at 47. Another stop for rain had us checking the rule book as to how the game progresses from here. Upon checking the rules the only way the Cobras could win was to dismiss the opposition, failing that the game would be declared a draw. Luke then threw to ball to our secret weapon, Bryce. In a spell of just under 4 overs he managed to clean up the table and ensure a well deserved win for the team. Best of the bowlers were: Bryce Sewell 3 for 4 off 4

overs and Julian Wilson with 2 for 11 off 11. Well done boys and keep up the good work. Round 2: Week 1; This week saw us travel to Portarlington to see if we could keep the ball rolling. Port won the toss and elected to bat and the guys soon had one of the openers back in the pavilion with the score at 3. Our opening bowlers Julian Wilson & Andrew Higgins bowled superbly and after their initial spell of 6 overs each Port had only managed 18 runs. All the guys bowled well and after a small partnership by Port we had them 2 for 43, from then on the wickets came frequently and in the 40th over we had Port all out for just 72 runs. The fielding was great and they supported their bowlers well. Best of the bowlers were Andrew Higgins (4 for 11) and Chris Janson (3 for 9). With 12 overs still to be bowled after the change Luke pulled off a great coaching move opening with Nick Sanders & Sam

Tucker. The two put on a quick 25 in 4 overs before Nick let one get through to his stumps. This brought Nick Rankin to the crease and along with Sam they took the score to 1 for 55 after 12 overs. Week 2: With only about 20 more runs to secure a victory we thought now was a good time to give those that didn’t bat last game to have a hit. The 2nd wicket fell with the score on 73 in the 17th, which saw Bryce come to crease and go just as quick for a Golden. Julian Wilson joined Sam and they took the score to 125 before Sam was caught just 5 short of his 50, with Julian following him next ball. After fending off the hat-trick ball, Ash along with Chris put on 41 runs for the next wicket. We ended up all out at 8 for 168 as 2 of the boys from last week were unable to play, leaving us a couple short. Best of the batsmen were Sam Tucker with 45 and Nick Rankin with 29. Another great game guys. GO COBRAS!!

WELCOME to the new team on the block – Leroy’s mighty D2’s. This was our 3rd outing, this time against Barrabool. Leigh won the toss and elected to bat. First wicket to go was Adam for a duck with the score only at 4, then a small partnership between Nick and Stammers taking the score to 39. Unfortunately in the D2’s all we could manage was only small partnerships without any of us getting one going. Although we were scoring at a good rate, the wickets were also falling fast and when RD went out

again for a duck we ended up with a score of 126 off 26 overs. Tea was taken early and with only a small total to defend on a very small ground, Leroy started with his bevy of beauties, Jules and Jess. They both bowled very well with Jess doing the better taking the first 2 wickets, and ending up with 2/26. At drinks we had the opposition at 4/82 and as Leigh put it 1 or 2 more wickets and we‘d be back in the game. Adam & Sam bowled very economically and Barrabool were getting frustrated by the lack of runs.

With the score at 88, Sam dropped one in short and they sent it straight to Paul, who luckily for him caught it. (If he’d dropped that one I don’t think any of us would’ve let him forget it too quick.). Spirits lifted in the field as we knew another quick one would help us in our quest, but unfortunately things were not meant to be and they passed us in the 29th over. Best of the bowlers was Jess Ellwood with 2/26 off 5 and Adam Donald with 4 maidens,0/4 off 5. Also great to see Paul back after his operation.
