Grove median prices up $60k in two years
STEADY GROWTH THE latest Victorian Property Sales Report shows a steady increase in median property sale prices across Ocean Grove houses, units and vacant residential land. The December 2011 quarter revealed median unit prices in Ocean Grove increased by 13.2 per cent to $515.300 compared to a decrease in Barwon Heads (45 per cent to $549,500) and Geelong (15.9 per cent to $467,400). That is a difference of $60,000 compared to Ocean Grove’s $455,000 median house price in 2010. RT Edgar’s Alex Boyle said that he hasn’t noticed an increase as such and believes big sale prices may be affecting the overall median price. “It’s been pretty widely telecast that it’s a tough market but if the property is priced right it will sell as things are still selling,” he said. Vacant residential land in Ocean Grove increased by 7.2 per cent to $248,800 whilst Barwon Heads saw a massive 71.7 per cent increase to $530,000.

BOHITI Salon recently competed at the Victorian Regional Hairdressing Competition, walking away with three awards. Salon owner Danielle HowlandStephens said that it was important to be involved in events like this. “Bohiti makes competing in competitions like these and others held in Melbourne a regular part of our extra-curricular salon activities,” she said. “It’s such a wonderful opportunity to show our creativity and keeps us up to date with the latest hair trends.” Bohiti placed third in the Open Photographic section, third in the Open Ladies High Fashion Colour section and first place in the Open Ladies High Fashion Colour

section. “This is a very strong message to our clients that we will continue to evolve within the industry and be equipped to give them the latest in salon service, styles and trends,” said Danielle. Husband and wife duo Danielle and Num have also been invited to work with the ECO Hair Products team at Hair Expo Sydney over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. “This is an amazing opportunity for us and the salon and we are very excited to be chosen to represent a brand that we believe in and know and trust,” said Danielle. Danielle has been working with CHI ammonia free colours for over eight years with husband and coowner Num.
SALON Sojourn’s star apprentice Rebekah Colla recently became a fully qualified hairdresser - and the Victorian Regional Champion. Rebekah took out the title after winning first prize in three separate categories. “I came first in Junior High Fashion Colour, Beautiful Blondes and Junior Red Carpet,” she said. “So then I was announced the Victorian Regional Champion.” Rebekah said she was lucky Salon Sojourn (winner of over 20 hairdressing awards) has been her home since her apprenticeship began in September 2009. “It’s been the same people all the way through that have
trained me,” she said. “They’re all really good people to train with. I hear a lot of hairdressers move around as it’s hard to find a place and people you really enjoy working with.” Rebekah said she enjoys the challenging aspect of hairdressing and the artistic licensing it allows. Rebekah said the main advice she would have for current apprentices would be to listen and take notice. “I ask a lot of questions, I still do. There’s so many of us here and every one’s had different training and knows how to do different things,” she said. “We’re all still learning, you can have ten years experience and still be learning,” she said.
Strike hits Grove schools By JESSICA GRACE OCEAN Grove’s public schools were significantly disrupted during The Australian Education Unions (AEU) stop work action Thursday. Teachers from Grove primary and secondary schools went on strike, congregating in Melbourne to demand the Baillieu government uphold what it claims were pre-election promises. Ocean Grove Primary School teacher Kerryn Skuza said that the strike was important and she supported the actions of colleagues. “Being a teacher I know the Baillieu government promised before they got in that Victorian teachers were going to be the

highest paid in the nation and they’re not,” she said. “I agree with what the teachers are doing.” Kerryn said that whilst 16 OGPS staff went on strike there were a few who simply could not. “You don’t get paid to strike, there’s three members that are in the Union at Ocean Grove that haven’t gone on the strike; financially you can’t afford it and you feel guilty
about it,” she said. “I’m in a position where I’m renting at the moment so I can’t afford to.” Surfside Primary School Principal Mark Huglin also chose to take stop work action. “The stop work created significant disruption to schools, with high teacher involvement, many families affected having to keep their kids at home whilst teachers are at stop
work,” he said. “I’m hoping the parent community will support teachers in their endeavours.” Bellarine Secondary College had 65 teachers on strike, closing down the Drysdale site with only year seven remaining on campus at Ocean Grove. Wallington Primary School closed for the day, Surfside Primary had nine out of 11 classes affected and Ocean Grove Primary School had 24 teachers on strike. Premier Ted Baillieu said Victoria’s school performance has stagnated with 15 year old students at least six months behind their peers in the best performing Asia Pacific region. “We used to compare well among the world’s best but now we don’t,” he said.
Mr Baillieu said under the government’s offer all teachers would receive a 2.5 per cent pay increase, with pay increases over and above recognizing, rewarding and encouraging high performers. “This builds on the former Labor Government to trial performance pay around Victoria and recognizes the introduction of performance pay systems around the country,” he said. “We are determined to re-establish a top tier education system in Victoria within a decade.” Without the promised pay Kerryn believes ultimately there will be consequences for Victorian students. “Your best graduates and experienced teachers will go where the money is,” she said.

Musical dedication honoured OCEAN Grove’s Derek Humphrey’s life dedication to music has been recognized in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. Coincidentally, Derek was with the band of the Scots Guards when in late 1952 they were on parade in front of St James’ Palace and the announcement was made regarding the date of the coronation, making it quite apt that he has been awarded his OAM during the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. He was born and went to school predominantly in London, and in early 1941 he enlisted as a boy musician with the band of the East Surrey Regiment. It was there that Derek
learnt Music Theory, the saxophone, regimental history and finished his formal education. In 1952, he passed an audition for the Band of H.M. Scots Guards and was posted to London. Derrick attended the Coronation itself, was part of Queen Mary’s funeral procession, took part in Trooping of the Colour and Changing of the Guard ceremonies as well as acting as a guard of honour for visiting dignitaries and playing at major sporting occasions. In 1964 he came to Australia to join the RAAF Central Band at Laverton. For the next 30 years
Werribee was home and Derrick travelled extensively with the band throughout Australia and overseas. In 1968 he formed the Werribee Choral Society (later the Werribee Music Society) becoming the musical director until retiring in 1983 and in 1979, formed the Westgate Concert Band with Roy Hamilton. Derek finally retired from those musical activities in 1993 before moving to Ocean Grove to live. Since coming to the Geelong area, Derek has been involved in adjudicating, concert band workshops and singing with, and arranging music for the Ocean Grove Uniting Church choir.
Derek’s time these days still includes arranging concert band music and supporting young musicians. He continues to be involved in bowls, Probus, Lodge, RSL and attending concerts. The strong supporter of the Sound Shell proposals believes Ocean Grove is long overdue a theatre space. On receiving the letter he said “I couldn’t believe it. You don’t set out to get this sort of thing. You try and impart your knowledge to others. “I thoroughily enjoy it. I love to see young people play. It does them the world of good, particularly if they stick with it.”
Merilyn Millman is recovering after a nasty fall in the Terrace. She is grateful for the help of locals.
Thanks for help after fall AN Ocean Grove pensioner has expressed her thanks to locals who showed “unbelievable” compassion and kindness in helping her after a fall in the Terrace last week. In particular Merilyn Millman praised the kindness and care offered by staff and patrons at Ocean Grove Pizza who sprang to her aid after the accident in near darkness on Friday night. “I had ordered pizza and thought I’d just go and get some crumpets and we can have some hot chocolate and I’ll come back and pick up the pizza. “As I was walking along I tripped on a lip where the pavement is out of kilter and fell face forward. “Because of my age my reflexes are very slow and I couldn’t stop
myself. I slammed my face into the footpath,” she explained. “Well a lovely gentleman came out, I don’t know if he was one of the pizza people, but he said ‘oh darling’ and picked me up off the ground and walked me to the chair. The pizza people came out, (they were) absolutely brilliant. “It was dark, not very well lit. And I felt a fool. Aging does that to you. They pizza people sat me on the couch waiting for the ambulance to arrive. They cleaned up all my blood and everything. “We’ve only been here just on two years now. We moved down from northern New South Wales. I just wanted to say something about courtesy and manners of the town folk here. The community here was
brilliant.” Merilyn said the kindness didn’t stop there. Her pizza was still delivered, as was Merilyn and the car – and at no charge. “My husband has just had major heart surgery. They (the pizza people) got in the car and took the pizza to him and they told him what happened. I was in shock so I couldn’t. “And then they offered to drive our car home and put us in their car and follow us home. It was just beautiful.” Merilyn is now recovering and plans to make a complaint about the trip hazard but remains astounded by the kindness shown. “The compassion and kindness was unbelievable.”

CFA gas warning OCEAN Grove CFA has had a relatively quiet fortnight in the town. However, a small fire at a Sandpiper Court home has a warning from the brigade. A spokesperson said the fire was a result of gas leaking from the regulator connected to the gas cylinder on a barbecue. The resident promptly moved the BBQ away from the house, cooled the cylinder with water from a garden hose and ensured the fire brigade was called to safely extinguish the fire. There were no injuries. “This incident reinforces the importance of ensuring all gas powered appliances are regularly checked by a competent person,” the spokesperson said. “Keep your gas barbecue working efficiently and safely with these simple tips. “Check cylinders and hoses If you haven’t used your barbecue recently: Check the gas cylinder. A gas cylinder must not be refilled if it has not been tested for over 10 years or if the cylinder has been damaged. Exchange LP Gas cylinders at a reputable supplier to avoid this problem. “Check the hose to make sure it has not perished “ Check connections to make sure that they are tight “Check hose and regulator connections by spraying them with a soapy water solution. Bubbles will form if gas is escaping. If in doubt, turn off the gas and refer to a licensed gasfitter. ”

Are you Worried About Someone in the Grove? THE Bellarine Youth Development Network is pleased to release the Worried About Someone? brochures. The brochures are designed to give parents and carers information about ways they can help someone that might be going through a rough time. The members of the Bellarine Youth
Development Network want to provide useful information to the parents and carers in our local community. Mel Taylor, the School Focused Youth Service Coordinator with BATForce said “Young people tell us that their family is the most important source of support and advice. Young people
will turn to their friends and family members to talk about what they’re going through.” “Sometimes we just get stuck, we don’t know what to say or do. This brochure is a guide to get the conversation started and to offer some suggestions about where to seek professional help.” Mel said.
In the 2011 National Survey of Young Australian’s young people identified a number of issues that they are concerned about. Most commonly young people identified that they are concerned about coping with stress, worried about body image, and are experiencing problems with school or study. A greater number of young
people are also experiencing bullying. These brochures will be distributed to families on the Bellarine Peninsula through local secondary schools. The brochures will also be available at Bellarine Community Health and headspace centres. If you would like a copy of the brochure please call Mel Taylor on 0438 558130.

Speaker with insight By JESSICA GRACE THE Ocean Grove Uniting Church recently experienced an inspirational service as part of reconciliation week. Co-ordinator Lyn Mulligan said Indigenous speaker Reverend William Pickett’s sermon was a moving insight into the Stolen Generation. “When he was nine he was taken from his family to a mission. He missed his culture, he missed playing with his brothers and sisters and hearing the stories that were handed down,” she said. “The day went just so well, he talked about conciliation and moving on with hope, which is what the day was all about.” Reverend William Pickett said that he thought the afternoon was an excellent opportunity to come back and see people again. “I’ve been to the Church before so it was nice to go back and see everyone,” he said. “My journey has been about cross cultural ministry and building awareness about Aboriginal people’s journeys in

Australia, I had this idea when I was first ordained back in 2004.” Rev Pickett said his first parish was non indigenous and he learnt a lot during the three and a half years he was there. “We learnt from one another and from different people; whilst a lot of Aboriginal people find it hard to move on reconciliation is one of the doorways for the healing process,” he said. “The most important thing for me, my Christian faith has given me
great awareness of my spirituality and who I am.” Rhonda Browne a member of the church’s Justice and Mission Committee said everybody was challenged to think about their own role in reconciliation. “Rev Pickett’s sermon was inspirational, humorous and informative,” she said. “It opened up an intellectual and spiritual dialogue between the indigenous culture and the Ocean Grove church community.”

Gardeners dig new community garden THE first working bee for the Ocean Grove Community Garden saw green thumbs arrive in droves. Clare Peterson said the day was a huge success with plenty of members and non members getting involved. “There was a great community spirit on the day and everyone enjoyed working and talking with other people from around the community,” she said. “We cut down climbing weeds on the fence, pulled out weeds across the large lawn, trimmed bushes and
trees and in an exciting moment we started digging our first plot to grow a demonstration garden of winter beans.” Claire said friends of the garden and landscape architects Elly Russell and Noelle came down from Melbourne for the day. “They helped out with the weeding and pruning and then decided to weave a slogan onto the temporary wire fence with some colourful wool,” she said. “The colourful slogan ‘we dig Ocean Grove’ can now
be seen across the fence and it’s a great first start in adding colour energy and artistry to the community space.” Claire said the deadline for the Logo and Naming Ideas Competition was extended after receiving some great submissions by local kids. “We have extended by one more month to let some more people submit their entries,” she said. “Thanks to everyone who turned up on a chilly day in Ocean Grove and we look forward to planting some

seeds and digging some more plots at our next working bee.” The working bees are held every fourth Sunday of the month from 10am to

Have van will travel, Simon heads north OCEAN Grove’s Simon McClean is putting an alternative spin on the traditional salesman, taking a newly renovated van on the road. Selling fire and emergency training equipment for BullEx Australia Simon said the timing was right. “The mining area in Queensland is booming at the moment and Victoria is becoming fairly quiet,” he said. “I have also recently separated from a marriage and don’t have a mortgage yet so I have nothing
holding me back.” Simon said he will be demonstrating the equipment to existing contacts on the drive up to Queensland. “Once I’m in Brisbane I’ll meet with the head offices of larger mining companies to set up more demonstrations/ training days for the mines,” he said. Simon said his experience in Ireland as a door to door direct salesman has equipped him with several handy techniques. “A big smile and a

said. “People are more likely to be interested in what you are selling if you build a relationship first.” Leasing a Merc Sprinter (previously an Ambulance) Simon decked it out with a bed, ample storage underneath for all the demonstration equipment and his surfboards. “I have added a closet and a toolbox which has some of my basic carpentry tools in it so I can get some casual work chippying if need be,” he said. “I will also purchase a
gazebo before I go so I can set up an outdoor office for when I stop at caravan parks along the way.” Simon’s looking forward to seeing more of Australia and catching up with friends and family scattered throughout the country. “The surfboards and fishing rods are packed so it won’t be all hard work,” he said. “I’ll miss my family, friends and our dog the most although my body will thank me for leaving too, I think, as my mates love a beer.”

Kym gets her birthday wish The smile says it all, Kym McTaggart after completing her first marathon on the Great Ocean Road, and below her supportive family.
Volunteering at Cambodian orphanage OCEAN Grove’s Perri Jones is going to Cambodia to work on a childcare/orphanage volunteer program. She will spend two weeks working alongside other volunteers from all over the world. “I really want to help and make a difference. I’ve had some difficult times in my life but I think being placed in their living circumstances I’ll realize I have it pretty good,” she said. “I’m a little bit nervous because I have never been overseas alone, however I think it will be such a great experience and once I get there I won’t want to leave.” Working hard to ensure sufficient funds for program fees, airfares, travel insurance and vaccinations Perri said she can’t wait for the experience. “I’ve always been interested in the different ways people live, I hope I can make a difference for these children,” she said.
OCEAN Grove’s Kym McTaggart completed a 45km marathon with the support of loving family friends and a little help from Mother Nature. Perfect weather and beautiful scenery saw the mother of two run the Great Ocean Road event, granting her birthday wish. “I have always been a runner and have completed about 12 half marathons but have always wanted to do a marathon,” she said. “I’ve never quite got
around to it but as I was turning 50 I thought it would be fun to do one before my birthday.” Kym began training four months ago, running four times a week with one long run (beginning at 20km and gradually increasing to 36kms) “My friend Lori Langedyk was training with me but she sustained an injury and continued to come along on a bike to keep me company,” she said. Kym completed the event in 3hrs and 56 mins,
relieved to cross the finish line. “As I got further into the race I enjoyed it more because I knew I was going to finish it,” she said The notoriously hilly course also proved to be far less overwhelming with Kym enjoying the race from start to finish. “I discovered I can actually run up hills quite well but running down them is a different thing,” she said. “My knees started to ache about 35kms in.” Her husband Brett and
children James and Emily were there to cheer her on alongside friends from the Ocean Grove Harriers. “I just kept smiling. Having them all at the finish line to cheer me home was great,” she said. Advice from Harriers not to go too fast for the first 23kms, to drink water at each drink station and to have gel at each 5km proved to be fruitful. “I enjoyed it so much, I am sure I will run another, but maybe just 42kms not 45kms and not hills,” she said.

Walk, skip and run-athon
Grade Two’s and Grade Two teacher Kate Whelan.
OCEAN Grove Primary School students walked, skipped and ran as they raised funds for their school during a recent walkathon. Grade Two teacher Kate Whelan said it was a great way for the kids and community to raise money. “The kids walk, skip or run around the park and we give
them a dot on their hand for every lap they complete,” she said. “The kid’s sponsors, a mix of parents, friends and anyone they have sought out within the community donates for each lap.” Kate said it was a fantastic idea for the kids to get out and enjoy being physical.
“We’ve got this park right across the road, we do come over once a week and some kids come over here for running club but it just gives everyone the opportunity,” she said. “It’s also a great chance for the parents to come and get involved.” The event was at Ocean Grove Park.

Kids stick it out PATIENT youngsters at Our Lady Star of the Sea have helped nurture four previously rate stick insects into life. The members of the Green Thumbs student group represent one of only 24 schools selected to rear critically endangered Lord Howe Island Stick insects from a relatively small batch of eggs held by Melbourne Zoo. The eggs were at the end of last year and the school received them at the end of March. The first hatched on May 8 and the last on May 22. “They do take a while,” explained 11-year-old Nathan Fox. “It’s not hard but it does take a lot of watching and waiting. It can be a bit boring, but it’s good that it’s like that. “If you spray inside the egg box they seem to hatch a bit quicker. Nathan and his teacher came up with the idea.
“My mum was reading a magazine and it was saying about Lord Howe Island Stick Insects at Melbourne Zoo and at the time our class was looking for a class pet. “I put it forward to my teacher and it turned out that Miss Healy was also looking at them as a project. “We both sent an email and a letter to Melbourne Zoo explaining why it would be good to be involved.” The students continue to monitor their offspring which will grow to about 10cm and turn brown and then black as they mature. Eventually the plan is to reintroduce the stick insects to Lord Howe Island, when their biggest threat, black rats, are eradicated.
Right: students get close to one of their stick insects.
Diversity on offer at Bellarine College showcase BELLARINE Secondary College recently held an open night showcasing the diversity and range of subjects available on campus. Potential students were guided around campus by current students, a proven method according to Principal Jon Shepard.
“It’s a proven way of doing it, we always want to make it student orientated,” he said. “We had about 50 students working as guides and another 30 students spread out in classrooms demonstrating various activities.” Jon said some classes were
more popular for obvious reasons. “There were certainly lots of people happy to help out in home economics as they got food,” he said. “There were also student demonstrations in woodworks, textiles with tour guides taking groups of ten to 25 people all over the
school.” Jon said a lot of people often come through open night due to the presence of young families in Ocean Grove. “There are always a lot of people as there are a lot of young families and they are interested in their child’s education,” he said.
Students created Mediaval Villages as part of the opening night show.

DINNING OUT
A little piece of 42nd Street WINTER is here and The Olive Pit is the best place to enjoy perfect coffee in a warm and cosy environment. Being Victorian’s we all know the joys of winter and what better way to spend a cold rainy weekend than with a sleep-in, followed by an all day breakfast made from local free range produce! Not a breakfast person? Then soothe the soul with a classic soup - hearty and made fresh daily (perhaps even indulge the family to a take home deli soup?). Just like the soup, the breakfast and lunch menu is built around produce available from the deli fridges, and
that means it’s fresh and of the highest quality. If the cold is getting you down and you can’t afford a holiday then The Olive Pit should be your destination of choice. First order a New York bagel with pastrami and imagine that The Terrace is just around the corner from 42nd Street. Follow the bagel with an Italian Coffee and then take home a French brie and some Spanish Jamon and you have had a round the world holiday all thanks to The Olive Pit! Now why would anybody leave Victoria in the winter?

OH YES, THEY’RE BACK Its hard to believe it has been 2 years since StephenMcEwan and the Yesmen recorded and released their live C.D. “ A most peculiar kind of Intoxication” A lot has happened in that time.
The band, although still together, has spent time fulfilling individual ambitions and not playing around too much. Travelling, becoming parents, study all these things have distracted the Yesmen from what
they do best. Play kick ass original music. The time is now right and they “are getting the band back together” The full Yesmen line-up will play their first gig in a long time at The Piping Hot Chicken Shop in
Ocean Grove on Friday June 22. A guaranteed musical journey can be expected. Steve McEwan and Michael MacPherson’s songs cover many genres, there will be something for everyone. Songs for
the heart, Songs for the head, Songs for dancin’ feet. Don’t miss this great night from a seminal local band $10 entry. Bring your friends, Bring your Enemies. If you don’t like ‘em, We Will!

Mobbsy’s
Muso
Corner Mobbsy meets Stewart Guthrie Stewart Guthrie is a talented muso whose catchy songs can be heard inside venues along the coast and in the city. After tuning into the beach lifestyle in the late 90’s he has brought his love of melody and songs to music lovers in our coastal town. Catch him if you can; his new band is getting rave reviews and always pull a great crowd. Let’s find out more about the man behind the new band Farquarharson. Tell us a bit about yourself. I moved to Torquay in 1997, bought some dirt, built a house (and a shed that I work from), surfed a lot. While doing the dad thing, played with a band called 180knots, then solo for a few years, then a duo format with Kevin Demmon called Guthrie Pastiche and now Farquarharson. How long have you been part of the OG scene? Have been playing around Ocean Grove for approx 5 years or so, and the last 10 around Torquay. What instruments do you play? I play primarily acoustic guitar
and sing. Do you remember your first ever live gig? Was it scary? Oh yes, Sleepy Hollow Blues Club circa 2002. Had to change my underwear at that one, but what a blast! It’s quite hard to get up in front of people and spill it out. Does writing songs come naturally to you? I have always been into ‘melody’, so to put words to a melody and deliver convincingly live is something that has taken a while to get right, but these days with a lot of help from the Farquarharson boys, songwriting is great fun and everyone contributes to bring a tune to life. Your new band ‘Farquarharson’ is getting a following along the coast and in Melbs. Where did the name come from? Far-quar-har-son was the name of one of my primary school teachers, also the name of one of our tunes Mr Farquarharson. For those yet to see ‘Farquarharson’ live, what music do you play? We play predominantly originals, in a rock, funk style.
Picture: Perren Mortimer.
Live is where we excel, we always have a good time, at a band show we play lots of ‘up’ tunes and at a cafe style show we relax a bit and play more acoustic ballad style songs. Who else is in ‘Farquarharson’? (can you tell I like saying the word – Farquarharson.) Farquarharson consists of 5 players - Kevin Demmon on Guitar and Vocals, Greg Southall on bass, Scott McCutcheon on Drums and Chris Canning on Sax, Harmonica, Keys , Tin Whistle and everything else that makes a noise. The best gig you have ever seen? Bruce Springsteen at the Melb showgrounds around 1985 - 3 hours non-stop. Unbelievable performer. Who has been your biggest influence? Personally, my children; musically from an early age I was taken with Little River Band and their song structures and vocals. Do you have any fave local musos? Absolutely, Tess Guthrie!
The OG music scene is such a good vibe, what do you think makes it so special? Camaraderie, everyone is extremely supportive of what each other is doing, it’s great. Can we expect a CD release any time soon? We released our first album Nov 15 2011. We currently have 8 new tunes we are playing live and hoping for recording possible early 2013 Fave food? Milk Fave TV show? Pretty much anything on SBS 2 What do you get up to when you are not playing music? Surf, slightly addicted to mowing the lawn (weird, I know) and hanging with the kids. Mobbsy can be heard weekdays on 93.9 BayFM 4-8pm. He can also be spotted falling off his boogie board at Mainies and wearing his Collingwood jumper to annoy Cats fans. A festa full of musos MORE THAN 60 bands and solo musicians took to two stages at the Ocean Grove Hotel over the long weekend. Organisers say the reaction from acts and the hotel has been sensational with positive feedback on how ‘inclusive’ the atmosphere was. “ The quality of performers has been outstanding, from solo’s duo’s and full on bands, said co-organiser Kevin Downey. “The weekend has provided opportunities for people to showcase their talent in front of appreciative
crowds. “The amount of people who have attended exceeded everyone’s expectations” “An example of what this weekend was about can be summed up by this. Roast Goat Spit called in a stand in bass player, Selina, the quintessential rock chick, they had rehearsed once or twice and delivered a polished, hard rockin’ hour set. This is what open Mic’s are about, giving up and coming, and also established bands the opportunity to try out their stuff on an audience” “Michael Mathieson, of
The Ocean Grove Hotel, said, The response from musicians and patrons has exceeded our expectations, it just goes to show that if you showcase good enterainment, the crowds will come. “We look forward to continuing providing quality music for our patrons every week “A big thanks to the guys who did the sound mixing over the weekend. Rick Webb and Adam Pollock showed that no matter who you are or your level of expertise, a good sound guy makes a huge difference.”

The ultimate predator I SPOTTED this majestic Peregrine Falcon (pictured right) near Lake Connewarre during the week. It certainly didn’t like the look of me and gave me a very long and angry stare. Lucky I wasn’t a medium sized bird or it would have eaten me! When I looked at my photo what struck me was the size of the yellow talons- they are huge. Peregrine Falcons are not only seen in Connewarre. They are found nearly everywhere on Earth, except extreme Polar Regions, very high mountains, and most tropical rainforests. The only major landmass in the world from which it is absent is New Zealand. This makes it the world’s most widespread raptor. The Peregrine Falcon is found across Australia, but is not common anywhere. The Peregrine Falcon became an endangered species 40 years ago in many areas because of the use of pesticides, especially DDT. Since the ban on DDT from the early 1970s, populations
have recovered, supported by large-scale protection of nesting places, and releases to the wild of birds bred in captivity. The Alcoa Plant in Anglesea includes a nesting area for Peregrine Falcons, and the workers there have been monitoring the Peregrine family tree for years. The most interesting fact about Peregrine Falcons is that they are renowned for their speed, reaching over 322 km/h (200 mph) during their hunting dive, making them the fastest member of the animal kingdom. Awesome! Yikes, imagine flying that fast. Peregrine Falcons have a grey back, barred white underparts, and a black head. The females of the species are markedly larger than males. Their eye-ring and the heavy bill are yellow. They grow to a maximum size of 48 cms, and have a wingspan of 1.1 metres. The Peregrine Falcon’s diet consists almost exclusively of mediumsized birds and rabbits,
A Peregrine Falcon pictured at Lake Connewarre.
but they have also been seen hunting small mammals, reptiles, and insects. The Falcons swoop down on their prey at great speed, hooking their catch in their powerful talons. Pairs may hunt co-operatively after disturbing flocks of birds. I witnessed a Peregrine Falcon hunting some seagulls in Bermagui
(NSW) last Christmas, and the seagulls did not stand a chance. Peregrine Falcons mate for life. They do not construct a nest; instead the female lays its eggs on the ledges of cliff faces, in tree hollows or in the abandoned nests of other birds. The local branch of Bellarine Birdlife have an outing planned on
Sunday the 17th of June to Pinkerton. The next meeting at the Neighbourhood Centre will be held at 7.30pm on July 2. If you are interested in any activities or have a membership enquiries please contact Miles Charlesworth 0438 531 782 or email bellbirder@ gmail.com. By Jennifer Carr.

60 def Werribee (2) 34 REPORTS It is the mid point of the VJBL season and Bellarine Storm teams are proving to be a handful for the other teams in the competition, with four of the teams yet to drop a game. The U12 boys, U12 girls, U14 girls and the U18 boys have all gone through the first half of the season undefeated and are sitting on top of the ladder, while 3 other teams are sitting in the top four. U14 boys (1) and U16 boys (1) are both 3rd with 3 losses for the season and U16 girls (2) also on 3 losses are sitting fourth. The U14 boys (2) are just
outside the four in fifth position and with a strong second half of the season can easily make the final series. U16 boys (2) are 7th with the U16 girls (1) currently in 8th position. The teams are all training well and looking forward to the second half of the season. With continued good performances it looks like we could see a number of Storm teams playing finals this year. Well done to all the players and coaches and good luck for the rest of the season. BELLARINE STORM RESULTS 8/6/2012 Results unavailable at time of going to press.

Hardcore tennis beats weather
Steph Golightly (Mixed 10)
Ethan Franks (mixed 10).
JUNIORS Saturday 2nd June This week the Juniors started in a chilling 6 degrees. The parents and kids took a while to warm up and despite the inclement weather, 6 out of 8 Junior teams managed a win. 4 Girls played at Clifton Springs and won a tightly fought match 3 sets 27, to 3 sets 26. Every game counted and Maddison Ketchen’s outstanding win in her singles 6 – 0 certainly helped. 7 Mixed played at home against a very strong Drysdale team. Scores were 0 sets 18, to 6 sets 36. Travis Anderson came very close to winning his singles 5 - 6. 8 Boys, also at home, played Torquay who pipped them by just 4 games 3 sets 24, to
3 sets 28. Despite the loss Todd Clancy had a good day winning both of his sets 6 -3. 10 Mixed played away at East Uniting with a convincing win , the scores were 5 sets 32, to 1 set 21. Stephanie Golightly had one of her best days winning her sets 6 -1, 6 -2. 11 Boys had a brilliant win over Bannockburn at Ocean Grove 5 sets 35, to 1 set 14. Liam Arstall had a great day winning his sets both 6 – 0. 13 Boys played Grovedale Black at Grovedale in an incredibly close match. Ocean Grove won 3 sets 30, to 3 sets 28. Well done to Michael Maertzdorf for winning both singles and doubles on the day. 14 Mixed had a great home win over Inverleigh 5 sets 32, to 1 set 17. The entire teamed played well, especially Tom Mazouris
who had a fantastic day winning both sets 6 -1. 17 Mixed were at Lethbridge for the morning with some very pleasing results 6 sets 36, to 0 sets 12. All team members won all of their sets with Edward Ford winning both 6 -0. Saturday 9th June Unfortunately the Juniors who were playing at Home were rained out, but some other Junior teams managed to still play. Here are their results:4 Girls at home washed out. 7 Mixed played away at Leopold but didn’t quite get there this time 1 set 18, to 5 sets 34. 8 Boys had a great win against All Saints at their home courts 5 sets 35, to 1 set 22. 10 Mixed at home washed out. 11 Boys at home washed out.
13 Boys unfortunately had their first loss of the season with a very close away game at Hamlyn Park 3 sets 25, 3 sets 30. 14 Mixed are still undefeated winning against All Saints on their home turf 4 sets 30, to 2 sets 22. 17 Mixed at home washed out. Well done to all of our Junior teams! SENIORS There are four Senior teams playing for Ocean Grove in the Winter competition. Saturday 2nd June This day was a challenging one for our seniors with no wins, but one draw. Here are the results: Section One played a seemingly unbeatable Grovedale Black team at Ocean Grove and lost 0 sets 12, to 6 sets 36. Section Four played at
home against Grovedale Yellow 1 set 24, to 5 sets 33. Section Five couldn’t quite pull off a win at home against Waurn Ponds 1 set 20, to 5 sets 31. Section Ten had a frustrating draw against Eastern Districts at their home courts 3 sets 28 all. Saturday 9th June Section One had a brilliant win, away, at St Mary’s 5 sets 31, to 1 set 22. Section Four washed out. Section Five played at Anglesea but couldn’t quite bring home the points. They lost 2 sets 24, to 4 sets 30. Section Ten washed out. Well done to all teams who played this week. It wasn’t easy getting up with the wintry conditions but everyone had fun playing and socialising down at the club.

Jesse follows up six goal haul with another four
Young Cobras working hard
Under 14 (1) Round 4 v South Barwon OGCC 4.2.26 defeated South Barwon 3.7.25 Another week and another increase in blood pressure and grey hairs for the parents of the Under 14 (1) team! For the third week in a row the match went down to the wire and once again the Cobras emerged victorious. Quickly out of the blocks, the Cobras made the most of their scoring opportunities to lead by 3 goals at half time with goals to first gamer Hamish Drake, Spencer Luppino, Fletcher Sharrock and Tristan Degn. Amazingly the Cobras did not bother the scorers for the rest of game as South Barwon threw everything at them in the second half. The backline stood up under enormous pressure and repelled attack after attack from the desperate Swans. A South Barwon goal with a minute to play looked ominous for the Cobras but fortunately the siren was our friend once again. The win gave the Cobras a share of top spot on the ladder, and we look forward to welcoming back our coach Paul Featherby after 2 weeks on the sidelines. Goals: Hamish Drake 1, Spencer Luppino 1, Fletcher Sharrock 1, Tristan Degn 1 Best: Darcy Pearson, Spencer Luppino, Luke Fisher, Riley Featherby Round 5 v Grovedale OGCC 3.6.24 defeated by Grovedale 7.5.47 The Cobras ventured out to Grovedale and battled hard all day against bigger & stronger opposition. Despite a losing margin of 23 points, once again this game went right down to the wire with the Cobras actually a point in front with five minutes to play. Unfortunately the Cobras could not capitalize on their periods of dominance especially in the third quarter when most of the play was in our forward line. Our skipper Byron Taylor once again led from the front, and Fletcher Sharrock turned in his best performance for the year with a great rebounding game across half back. Goals: Riley Maloney 1, Michael Smith 1 Best: Byron Taylor, Fletcher Sharrock, Darcy Pearson, Spencer Luppino U14 (2) Round 4 v Geelong West St Peters OGCC 12.11.83 defeated GWSP 1.1.7 The Cobras bounced back onto the winners list with a comprehensive win over the GWSP Roosters. The Cobra boys dominated from start to finish in our best performance for the season so far. Jesse Caliguri
Pictures from Collendina Cobras under 12 Orange fixture against South Barwon on Saturday morning. dazzled under the bright lights with 6 goals and received great support from Jackson ‘Jacko’ Peters and the Muffin Man Lachlan Smith with 2 goals each. Further upfield Harry Morris, Declan Bradley & Brayden Allan continually found their teammates in the forward line with pinpoint accuracy and great ball movement. Another great win to the Cobras, capped off with a spirited version of ‘Happy Birthday’ to Craig Goodger who turned 13 on game day! Goals: Jesse Caliguri 6, Jackson Peters 2, Lachlan Smith 2, Kyle Lock 1, Sam Beasley 1 Best: Jesse Caliguri, Lachlan Smith, Harry Morris, Declan Bradley, Liam Warren, Brayden Allan Round 5 v Leopold OGCC 9.5.59 defeated Leopold 3.5.23 The Cobras U14(2) team continued their rich vein of form with another convincing victory over Leopold. Kicking with the aid of a slight breeze, the Cobras were quick to get the score on the board and slammed on 4 unanswered goals to take a handy 26 points at quarter time. The backline held up well in the second quarter and restricted the Lions to only one goal thanks to the superb efforts of Sam Beasley and Reed Jordan. Another 4 goals in the third term wrapped the game up and the Cobras cruised home to a convincing 6 goal win over a team which had not lost a game all year. Jesse Caliguri followed up his 6 goal haul last week with another 4 and Liam ‘Chops’ Warren again dominated in the ruck. The win moved the Cobras to third position on the ladder and if the boys continue their improvement, hopefully a finals campaign beckons. Goals: Jess Caliguri 4, Liam Warren 1, Tom Smith 1, Connor Harvey 1, Jackson Peters 1, Kyle Lock 1 Best Players: Jesse Caliguri, Liam Warren, Zane Leist, Sam Beasley, Reed Jordan
Under 10 Blue Round 7 v Lara OGCC 1.1.7 defeated by Lara 7.10.52 The Under 10 Blue boys hosted Lara and although the scoreboard seemed quite one sided, it didn’t do justice to the efforts put in by the Cobras from start to finish. Captains for the day Jack Fox & Campbell Hoober led from the front all day, and were well supported by Tom Fairbrother, Tyler Vagg and Diesel McNeill. Our goal was snagged by Noah Cunningham. It was great to see the Cobras sticking to the team rules of good tackling, constant pressure and most importantly, never giving up. Well done boys! Goal: Noah Cunningham Best players: Tom Fairbrother, Tyler Vagg, Diesel McNeil, Hayden Ewart, Mitchell Arumets Round 8 v Leopold Green OGCC 10.3.63 defeated Leopold 3.3.21 A convincing win to the under 10 Blue team, highlighted by accurate kicking, silky skills and a great team effort. Noah Cunningham kicked 4 of the best, backed up by Josh Kuipers with 3 and Hayden Ewart 2. Best players on the day were Cool Jools Bond, Fletcher Keck and Jake Charles. A fantastic effort by the boys who are showing that the skills they are working on at training are starting to be seen on match day. A great team effort ! Goals: Noah Cunningham 4, Josh Kuipers 3, Hayden Ewart 2, Mitchell Arumets Best: Jools Bond, Fletcher Keck, Jake Charles Under 10 White Round 7 v Grovedale Claw OGCC 13.2.80 defeated Grovedale 1.0.6 A fantastic team effort from the Under 10 White team resulted in a commanding victory over Grovedale Claw. A big highlight was first gamer
Rory Hamilton blitzing on the wing and having a big hand in setting up two first quarter goals. Kye Annard kicked 3 sausage rolls, the third coming from a run which included one bounce and some cheeky candy selling. The X-Man, Xavier Norman, starred at centre half forward and was well supported by Sam Donnegan who starred in the midfield. All in all a great game by the White team! Goals: Kye Annard 3, Joshua Miller 2, Ben Gillians 2 Best: Darcy Pierce, Xavier Norman, Ben Gillians, Kye Annard, Flynn Ness Round 8 v Grovedale Gold OGCC 2.3.15 defeated by Grovedale 8.2.50 A brave effort by the Under 10 White team against a bigger and stronger team from Grovedale, and the scoreboard did not show how competitive we were for most of the game. Captain for the day, Charlie Every led from the front all game and received great support from Max Thompson, Daniel Townsend and Wil Herron. Goal scorers for the day were Sam Donegan and Josh Miller with one each. Another really great effort by the boys who are showing great improvement and having fun at the same time! Goals: Sam Donegan 1, Josh Miller 1 Best: Max Thompson, Dnaiel Townsend, Wil Herron Under 10 Orange Round 7 v Torquay Boak OGCC 7.4.46 defeated Torquay 5.4.34 The Torquay Tigers came out roaring and dominated the first quarter, keeping our boys scoreless and opening up a 19 point lead at quarter time. Not to be denied, the Cobras fought back to trail by only 2 points at half time thanks to the efforts of Joe Doedel and Izaak Terhorst across the backline and our skippers Levi Perry and Max Lacey. The Cobra boys ran away from the toothless Tigers in the
second half to record a fabulous 12 point win, William Monk kicking 3 goals, Phoenix Bowers 2 and the Super-Dooper-Coopers one each to lead the way. A great team effort highlighted by silky disposal skills and some fabulous marks. Goals: William Monk 3, Phoenix Bowers 2, Cooper Collett 1, Cooper Ward 1 Best: Joe Doedel, Izaak Terhorst, Liam Cunningham. Under 12 Orange Round 8 v South Barwon OGCC 3.2.20 defeated by South barwon 11.15.81 A fired up Cobras travelled to McDonald Reserve to take on league powerhouse South Barwon Swans. The first quarter our backline was under the pump but some desperate tackling, smothering and teamwork held the Swans to one goal. A great effort by the back 6. The second quarter the mighty Cobras started to drive the ball forward with big Jace Franken dominating the ruck. Shaun Bradley and Mitch Gawley-Price were livewires up forward both banging
through majors. Sue deBruijn was impassable at full back stopping 2 certain goals with well-timed intercepts. Flynn Hardiman was playing his usual strong footy driving the ball forward from half back with Fletcher Long working hard alongside him. The Cobras went into half time on level terms after a fantastic half of team footy. The Swans came out firing in the third and showed why they are one of the top teams. Ryan McNolty had a red hot crack in the ruck with Noah Ansell trying his heart out on the ball. Jace Franken in the last line of defence was taking marks as though he was picking apples, he must have clunked 6 or 7 for the quarter in a sparkling display. The final quarter was another great effort with the Cobras matching it with the Swans. Jye Thomas was lively and Bailey Payne showed great courage to come back after being smashed in the third by a bone crunching shepherd. Ezra Cuthell started to get his hands on it and Nick Warner continued his great form. A late goal by Nick topped off a gutsy team effort by the Cobras.

U18S IN the Under 18’s Division 1 Colts, Ocean Grove 1 lost to Torquay 1 by 11 points at Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve. Final scores were Ocean Grove 1.4.10 to Torquay 2.9.21. Meanwhile in the earlier Under 18’s Division 4 Colts match, Ocean Grove 16.17.113 won easily against the goaless Torquay 0.6.6. Grubber Matt Gibbs booted six goals and teammate Billy Foord-Engelsman kicked four majors.
Fighting spirit lifts Firsts over Saints OCEAN GROVE U16S THE firsts returned to the winners list with a comprehensive victory over St Marys(2) 11 18 84 to 4 5 29. It was pleasing to release the shackles and to be able to kick 11 goals was due to a well functioning forward line. Curtly Balshaw capped off a fine all round game with 4 goals. Christian West was able to drift forward to kick 3 goals, and Matt Caldow, Brayden Warren, Jacob Nicholson, and Rob Procter all kicked a goal. Hugh Attard and James Stirling both did well in the ruck, and Ned Holland was his usual tireless self winning plenty of hard ball contests.
Ben Potter played an excellent game across half back giving us plenty of drive. The firsts then followed up with a win full of character and merit against St Albans 9 10 64 to 5 8 38. With key forwards giving us a target all day in Brayden Warren with 2 goals, and Rob Procter with 3 goals we were able to capitalise on the good midfield work of Hugh Attard, Nat Gravener, Che Durran, and Matt Caldow. Hamish Hoober, James Teague, and Nick Murphy in the back half were all as solid and reliable as ever. Jacob Nicholson relishing a big ground to utilise his pace kicked 2 telling goals, and Mitch Lindkvist and Harry
Walker were both rewarded for their forward pressure by kicking a goal each. On a cold wintry night the seconds came up against taller, stronger in body opponents in Belmont Lions going down 12 10 82 to 6 8 44. The boys showed their usual fighting spirit to play out the game and outscore their opponents by 4 goals to 1 in the last quarter. Will Gant covered more ground than the early settlers and was rewarded for his efforts by kicking 3 goals. Alec Hernan, Vincent McDonald, and Cameron Drake were our other goalkickers. In the ruck Toby Featherby and Ben Sanders held their
own against bigger opposition by competing hard. At ground level James Hodder and John Bjornenak were excellent in their committment to win the ball, and to use it to our advantage. Up forward Brant Carlile and Adam Milich attacked the ball well when the ball was in their area. The seconds then showed how far they have come in their development as a team by turning around a 12 goal loss to Anakie earlier in the season into an 11 goal win in a totally dominant display 13 15 93 to 3 9 27. Hunting the ball in numbers, a high work rate that never dropped off, combined with good
running resulted in a feast for clever forwards Jake Taylor, Jack Benjamin, and Vincent McDonald, who all kicked 4 goals. Ben Sanders’ workrate resulted in many goals, and he was rewarded with a goal of his own. It all started in the middle through a dominant, and tireless performance from Jed Evans, who gave an arm chair ride for the likes of Patrick Nagle, Will Gant, and James McGarry to capitalize on. A disciplined defence was led by Jack Ness, Riley Hollmer, and Sam Pfeiffer. The boys are starting to believe in the ingredients that make up a good football team and are taking that into their games.

Grove chalk up win at Coutas Seniors Round 8
The A-grade girls chalked up their third win of the season against Queenscliff last weekend in what was a pretty good day for Ocean Grove in round 8 of the Bellarine Peninsula Netball Association. The B & C grade teams had narrow losses, while things didn’t go well for the D graders. Meanwhile in the juniors, Ocean Grove took the honours in all but one of the games. A-Grade: Ocean Grove 44 defeated Queenscliff 39 This was a game that could have gone either way. In a close contest, it was Ocean Grove’s system and game plan which won through in the end. The girls should be applauded for their perseverance to tough it out when the heat was on. They stayed positive when the going got tough and implemented coach BlakeUren’s instructions to the letter. There were winners all over the court but the fine finishing work in the goal circle by Zanna Woods and Tina Birch was the clincher that got them over the line. The goalers had Grace Caldow and Jaimie George to thank as it was their midcourt pressure and creative passing into the goal circle that made their day easier. The ever reliable back half led by Kelly McIntosh, Lauren
Ollis and Krystal Boswell kept the defensive pressure up all day and they played their part in keeping Queenscliff to a losing score. A thoroughly deserved victory which was just reward for a great team performance. Best players: Zanna Woods; Grace Caldow; Krystal Boswell B-Grade: Queenscliff 28 defeated Ocean Grove 27 One that got away! There could only be one winner and unfortunately it was Queenscliff who was in front on the scoreboard as the final hooter sounded. There were never more than 2 or 3 goals separating the teams for the entire match and it could just as easily have been a win for Grove. The girls played some awesome defensive pressure netball up and down the court and some beautiful goaling by Emma Doolan and Jess Morris put the polish on the job. Paula Birch, Kelsey Ollis and Sarah DeGenaro were tight in defence while Luci Ross, Bree Fankhauser and Laura Ellis broke even with their opponents in the centre court. It’s hard to believe that this team has 3/5 win/loss record. Their best netball is good enough for finals and with a little more consistency, the wins might soon start to stack up.

Round 9
A Grade line up against Torquay. Best players: Luci Ross; Kelsey Ollis; Sarah DeGenaro C-Grade: Queenscliff 22 defeated Ocean Grove 21 Another game which was close all day. Another game which could have gone either way. Another game in which Queenscliff held sway! There were only a couple of goals separating the teams at each break but Grove found themselves one down at the end. Strong defensive games from Danielle Vicary, Sharna McNamara, Christie Clark and Cath Slevin kept the Grove in the game until the final bell. Caily Nash and Famie Needham were
converting well in the goal ring and were on the end of good supply from Jess Grace and Britt Long. Best players: Danielle Vicary, Sharna McNamara, Jess Grace D-Grade: Queenscliff 26 defeated Ocean Grove 12 Not a great day out for the girls with their skills letting them down at crucial times. They didn’t stop trying but things just didn’t go their way. Kate Mason was a star in defence and showed her team-mates the way while Cath Slevin battled hard in the goal circle. Best players: Kate Mason,
A-Grade: Torquay 55 defeated Ocean Grove 46 The Ocean Grove A Grade girls played a tough convincing game against second on the ladder Torquay with some consistent efforts right across the court. They were only 1 goal down at half time and ended the game down by 9. Best players: Lauren Ollis, Jaimie George, Kyrstal Boswell. B-Grade: Torquay 51 defeated Ocean Grove 30 The Ocean Grove B Grade girls tried hard all day but were beaten in the end by Torquay. A fantastic effort by all the girls. Best players: Luci Ross, Paula Birch, Jess Morris. C-Grade: Torquay 38 defeated Ocean Grove 29 A complete team effort by C Grade girls against the strong Torquay opposition. Best players: Jess Grace, Christie Clark, Danielle Vicary. D-Grade: Torquay 27 defeated Ocean Grove 12 The D Grade girls went back to basics and had some beautiful passages of play. Seconds have more in reserve IN THE Reserves’ grade, Ocean Grove fought out a gutsy seven-point win over Torquay on Saturday and extended their winning streak out to six matches. Final scores were Ocean Grove 5.6.36 to Torquay 4.5.29. Grubber Shaun Britt continued his impressive season to date and was amongst his side’s best players, while playing cocoach Kane Montgomery booted two goals. The win was made all the more impressive with Grubbers calling upon non-regulars Andrew Vannoordenburg and James Stapleton to play. The Grubbers seconds sit in third spot after nine rounds of the BFL.

Grubbers meet the team to match THE GRUBBERS suffered their first loss of the season after BFL flag favourites Queenscliff recorded a convincing 40-point win over the home side on June 2 at Ocean Grove. Final scores Ocean Grove 10.11.71 lost to Queenscliff 16.15.111 The Coutas gained the early ascendancy and went into the quartertime break with a 19-point advantage thanks to a five-goal first quarter aided by leading goalkicker Daniel DeGois, who booted five majors for the match.
Along with DeGois, damaging forward Ash McDonald also kicked five goals. The second quarter saw Queenscliff extend their dominance over the Grubbers as the visitors took a commanding 58-point lead at the main break with a seven-goal to onegoal second term. Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor paid tribute to Queenscliff ’s ability in forcing the Grubbers’ players into critical errors. “We knew if Queenscliff played
good footy, they were going to be hard to stop,” McGregor said after the match. “We knew we had to play to our ability (and) try and get the four points, we didn’t do that in the first half because purely we made far too many mistakes. “A lot of those mistakes were because of the pressure Queenscliff put us under.” In the second half, the Grubbers improved and outscored the league leaders kicking seven goals to the
visitors’ four majors. The loss was also compounded with injuries to youngster Jack Rawlings (ankle) and utility Shaun Fankhauser (knee), who is expected to be sidelined for at least six weeks. While the Grubbers had trouble in containing the firepower of the Coutas’ forwards in the first half, Grubber key defender Tom Roberts played an even more important role down back in the absence of Harrison Foott (foot injury) and was amongst Ocean Grove’s best players.

Discipline the key OCEAN GROVE coach Cameron McGregor says the Grubbers need to improve team disciplines if they want to be classed as a genuine BFL premiership contender in 2012. The stern assessment from the Grubber coach came in the wake of Ocean Grove’s demoralising 20-point loss to secondplaced Torquay on Saturday in the slippery mud at home. Ocean Grove sit in third position (7-2) and McGregor blamed their second home loss in successive weeks on the side’s failure to follow team structures in a stinging post-match address in the rooms. Final scores were Torquay 7.11.53 to Ocean Grove 4.9.33. “When the game was ready (to be taken), we weren’t ready to take it and that is why I think it is a mental thing, I don’t think it is an ability thing,” McGregor said. “There were a lot of guys that really did battle hard for the four quarters and that was the most disappointing thing that they got let down by half a dozen of their mates. “We went back to the old individual footy, guys trying to do too much and trying to play their own style and it is not going to win us a game in the big games - if we are not on the same page and that was evident late in the second and third quarters.”
Although the Grubbers held a valuable nine-point lead at quarter-time in the low scoring affair, the Tigers won the contested ball at the crucial stages from the second quarter onwards. Critically, the home side failed to kick a goal in the second and third quarters. “We were second to the footy in the second quarter, second to the footy in the third quarter and had a bit of run on at the start of the last quarter, (but) the game was shot by then,” McGregor said. Meanwhile Torquay playing coach, Craig McCaughan admitted his side adapted well to the heavy mud at Ocean Grove. For the Tigers, Michael Boag was the only multiple goalkicker on the day while defender Josh Gray and Shane Miller handled the greasy conditions with class and ease. “We came knowing it was going to be like this and picked the team accordingly and the contested footy was the thing that we prided ourselves on - a wet day (also) suited us I think,” McCaughan said. The Grubbers are likely to regain some star players in the coming weeks with key tall Harrison Foott and ball magnet Tyson Doherty likely to be in the mix for senior selection after their recovery from injury. Foott played in the reserves’ seven-point win over Torquay earlier in the day. This Saturday, Ocean Grove faces Drysdale at Drysdale Recreation Reserve. Game starts 2.10pm.

FATHER AND SON TO HIT THE SURF IN NATIONALS
Peter and Nick Lewis, C grade and Open champions..
FATHER and son Paul and Myles Fletcher are both off to the National Longboard Surfing event in Port Macquarie in August, writes Mark Heenan. Sixteen-year-old Myles, who successfully defended his Longboarding title at Point Impossible in late April, progressed through to the Nationals after he and Barwon Heads local Ben Considine were dual winners from the state event. Myles, a member of the Thirteenth Beach Boardriders club, has been competing for four years on longboards and the shortboards. Meanwhile, father Paul will compete in the over 45’s National Longboarding titles at Port Macquarie that start on August 15. The 51-year-old finished second to eventual winner Greg Brown in the over 45’s State Longboarding competition at Point Impossible in late April.
FAMILY DOUBLES UP GROVE golfer Nick Lewis’s win at the Ocean Grove Men’s Golf Club Championship was a double celebration for him and his family earlier this month, writes Mark Heenan. Twenty-three-year-old Nick, who defeated 2011 champion Scott Beyer by one shot, won with rounds of 73, 74, 78 and 72 over the four days of competition. In a thrilling finish to the Men’s Club Championship final round,
Nick, also a keen footballer and cricketer, overcame Beyer in the last few holes to secure the win. “He (Beyer) was still in front with two holes to play, so I got a bit lucky in the end,” said Nick, who currently plays off a handicap of four. “I think it clicked a bit (for me) on the last day.” He has been crowned Ocean Grove Golf Club Champion on three occasions now after winning
the event as a teenager in 2004 and 2005. Meanwhile Nick’s grandfather, Peter Lewis, who was crowned C-Grade champion with rounds of 95, 86, 87, 97 over the four-day competition, said his maiden win meant a lot to him and his family. “It is very special to me, it is very exciting for myself,” The 77-yearold said. “Young Nick has done it before, he has been club champion three times now.
“I have been here for 18 years (at Ocean Grove Golf Club) and that’s the first time I have won an event.” In other Club Championship news, the B-Grade event was taken out by Matt Bate with scores of 85, 81, 78, 76. Meanwhile the seniors’ event was won by Neville Carracher and Spencer Davies who claimed the junior event. • Aussies versus the Rest of the World page 11.
‘SWAMP’ REKINDLES MEMORIES
Grubbers inaugural Under 15 side in 1963.
Players reunited: Peter Skinner (son of president Jack), Henk Renzenbrink, Don Lappin, Bill Kelly, Kevin Thompson, Jimmy Saarinen and Ken Hose.
THE Mud bath like conditions on Saturday at Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve came as no surprise to club legend Jimmy Saarinen, writes Mark Heenan. Saarinen, a life member of the Ocean Grove Football Club who played in the Grubbers’ inaugural Under 15 team in 1963, referred to the ground as a ‘swamp’ even before his playing days. The Grove local is a former games record holder at the Grubbers after his junior and senior career spanned more than 20 years at Ocean Grove. In more recent years, Saarinen’s long standing games record was overtaken by club legend Damian ‘Bones’ Clark who retired at the end of 2009. “This ground was in actual
fact a swamp before the club was formed, they filled it up and we used to go yabbying in the middle of it,” said Saarinen who played at Ocean Grove between 1963 and 1984. “It was always susceptible to the wet and this is the worst I have seen it for actually a few years. “We have copped a lot of water though.” While the club formed in 1962, Saarinen was on hand to celebrate Ocean Grove Football Club’s 1963 reunion during the Grubbers’ clash against Torquay on Saturday. Members of the 2002 premiership team also held a reunion on the day to celebrate their 10-year anniversary with a marquee set up on the outer side of the ground.
Current Western Bulldogs AFL coach, Brendan McCartney, a four time senior premiership coach with Ocean Grove between 1994-97, was also present and mingled with past players from the 1963 Under 15 team. “It was good to see Brendan, he is quite a humble man even though he has achieved what he has in a reasonably short period of time, particularly with this club,” Saarinen said. McCartney also spoke to the senior playing group on the morning of the match at the home of current coach Cameron McGregor. Ocean Grove Football Club president Geoff Cunningham, who played a major role in organising the day’s proceedings, was pleased with the turnout

from the past players of 1963. “It was great to see so many people from the 1963 Under 15’s side come along,” Cunningham said. “They had a good day. “They talked about what they did in those years gone by and they are very happy to be reconnected back with the club.”
