FUN FAIR: Emma Stubbs and Link Richardson Stubbs enjoy the thrills and spills of Surfside Primary School’s Fresh Food Fair.

Hardy folk flock to fair DESPITE a wet and wooly start to Sunday morning, Grovers and visitors flocked to Surfside Primary’s annual fresh food fair. A packed programme of attractions, rides, food and plant stalls ensured those that made the trip were not disappointed. All centred around the school’s successful

kitchen garden, the fair lived up to its reputation for tasty gourmet snacks – varying from curried sausage rolls and squid to cakes and fruit. For the more energetic, long rides on the mini jeeps, flying chairs, an inflatable slide and pony rides were on offer, while a pets

corner provided refuge from the busier areas. Smiling staff, parents and pupils manned the stalls throughout the changeable morning, helping to raise money for the school and making sure visitors were given a fun morning out.

Frenzy shines on OCEAN Grove Surf Lifesavers were working hard during the Frenzy on Saturday. The sun came out for the annual Melbourne Cup weekend surf club fundraiser and so did the red and yellow of the club’s volunteers. The club also offered defibrillator and equipment demonstrations, face painting and a sausage sizzle. Local shops offered special deals to customers on the day and shoppers were encouraged to make their own donations. The Frenzy organisers hope to contribute towards a new four-wheel drive vehicle and the upgrading of their radio and public announcement system.

Students offered counselling STAFF have offered Bellarine Secondary College students counselling after a 17-yearold was stabbed with a pen in a school yard fight last week. The story made national news headlines when the student was allegedly stabbed by a 15-year-old following facebook taunts. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said a fight broke out between a 17-year-old, from Drysdale, and a 15-yearold boy, from Ocean Grove, at the college on Peninsula Drive in Drysdale. ‘‘Both boys received injuries. The 17-yearold was taken to Geelong Hospital with serious injuries,’’ the spokeswoman said. The 17-year-old has since been released from hospital. ‘‘The investigation is ongoing,’’ said the police. No charges have been laid.

Showdown in Mo-town

MO growing has turned serious business with a high street butcher goading chicken shop staff that they would have stubble trouble matching their manly manes. Suggesting the chook shop may be somewhat follicly challenged, Ocean Grove Quality Meats’ Colin Smith said: “They should leave the mo growing to real men.” Fellow butcher Mat Rantall warned the opposition: “I’ve been growing moustaches since I was five.” But far from chickening

out, the Piping Hot team is preparing to face off the burly meat men. “These guys may know how to make sausages but that doesn’t mean they can grow moustaches,” said Piping Hot Chicken Shop owner Ben Chudoschnik. “We are up for the challenge,” he said. The Voice will follow these Mo growers, who are raising money for Movember. During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on

thousands of men’s faces in Australia and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and depression in men. Both Terrace shops will have buckets for donations and the Voice website will include an end of month chance to vote on the best Mo. If you would like to challenge the butchers and chicken shop workers enter your details at au.movember. com and contact news@

oceangrovevoice.com to be included in our town poll. Meanwhile local real estate agents Hayden and RT Edgar are organising a Twenty20 cricket match in aid of the Movember cause. The match will be at Barwon Heads Cricket Club on November 23 at 3pm. The MotionGroveBarwon Hairy Heads match will feature a bar, a barbecue and an auction and locals are encouraged to come along and support the cause and the local players.

OCEAN Grove is gearing up for Bellarine’s inaugural Relay for Life. The Cancer Council fundraiser will be held at the Collendina Recreation Reserve from midday on Saturday, November 12, until midday the following day. A heap of entertainment is being organised for the day. Ocean Grovers can still register for the Bellarine Relay for Life, phone 1300 656 585 or visit www. relayforlife.org.au.

Cottage unsold DESPITE several million dollar views, Broom Cottage is still on the market after failing to attract a bidder at Saturday’s auction. The 1933 property pulled in about 70 onlookers but no bidders on this occasion. Details available from Bellarine Property.

THRILLED TO BITS: Maggie Dickson receiving the keys to her new Nissan Micra from Apia’s Steven Grange.

Car winner

AN UNEXPECTED phone call while overseas has resulted in an Ocean Grove woman coming home to a new car. Maggie Dickson was on holiday last month in New Zealand when she received a phone call informing her she had won a brand new Nissan Micra. Maggie won first prize in an Australia-wide television competition run by over 50s insurer, Apia. The prize not only included the car but all onroad costs and a year’s worth of Apia motor insurance. Maggie described the win as ‘heaven sent’, and said it would make life easier for both her and her elderly mother. “It’s all been a bit of a blur since the holiday, to be honest, but it really is a fantastic prize for me and my family,” Maggie said.

When she received the phone call, Maggie said she was in shock and didn’t truly believe she had won the competition. “I didn’t know if it was real or a hoax so I decided not to tell too many people until I got back to Melbourne and looked into it further,” she said. “It’s really only just starting to sink in.” Maggie said she and her mother will use the car to travel around Ocean Grove with the occasional trip to Melbourne. “I can’t believe how excellent it is, comfy and easy to drive, I’ll have to take more trips to Melbourne now,” she said. Apia executive manager Grant Taylor said he was pleased Maggie’s new car would be useful and ready to be enjoyed in time for a summer full of trips.

FROM PAGE 1 “We would hope and encourage a sensible approach in regards to pet dogs or cats that are a nuisance to their neighbours such as approaching the neighbours first in the first incidence, followed by mediation and then intervention by the council. “We have had a few reported incidences of animal baiting in our area over the last year however at this stage there have been no charges laid.” Bellarine Veterinary Clinic vet Amanda Hulands-Nave said deliberate pet poisonings were extremely rare.

“In 12 years of being a vet I have only ever seen one deliberate poisoning and that wasn’t in the Geelong region,” she said. Dr Hulands-Nave said most pets believed poisoned were in fact suffering from an infectious disease. “Otherwise the vast majority of poisoning happens by accident through things like snail bait and rat bait left outside.”

GET SET: Bob and Gaye Fraser use St Peter’s Church’s quotes board to announce the forthcoming fair.

Fair’s final touches WITH spring comes the racing season and the time for charity fairs and fetes. This month it’s the turn of St Peter’s popular church fete. On Saturday November 12 the organisers will fill its grounds and halls with stalls, food and activities for all the family. Children can enjoy a free jumping castle, thanks to Bellarine Memories, entertainment with Bozo the clown giving away balloons and a special stall just devoted to youngsters. Come along and sample great food, buy books, jams, cakes and recycled treasures and fruit and veg. The fun runs from 8.30am until about noon.

Fire plan out soon WITH the summer months approaching, it’s important for Ocean Grovers to be fire smart and bushfire ready. Ocean Grove CFA will help every resident prepare for bushfire season, with the upcoming launch of the first Township Protection Plan. CFA area co-ordinator Alistair Drayton said the booklet would be delivered to Ocean Grove letterboxes during November and December to help locals develop their own bushfire plan.

“The booklet will set out information for tourists and residents alike to answer questions on bushfires and allow them to create a plan in their own time,” he said. “It’s designed for them to map out a plan in the cold light of day rather than in the heat of the moment.” Ocean Grove’s need for its first protection plan arose from the 2009 Royal Bushfire Commission in the aftermath of the Black Saturday bushfires. The findings of the commission specified key bushfire risk factors

for a town which would therefore require a Township Protection Plan. Alistair said Ocean Grove was identified as an at risk area due to dense bush-land in both the north and south of the town. “The plan is based on risks around the township, mainly Woodlands estate which backs onto the nature reserve as well as the holiday park down on the spit,” he said. • More details in the next edition of the Voice.

Locals stay away A PUBLIC meeting called to brief and engage locals in the first Township Protection Plan for Ocean Grove failed to attract an audience. The Country Fire Authority held similar meetings at Point Lonsdale and Little River and received a similarly poor response. That contrasts with the full and rumbustious meeting that was held at Ocean Grove Fire Station two months after the February 2009 Victorian bushfires.

The response suggests that fears held two years ago may be less at the forefront than they were then However, a spokeswoman at the Ocean Grove meeting said that the need to plan to survive was just as important, and may be more critical with the increasing prospect of fast spreading grass fires. It was also revealed that Ocean Grove does not have a designated Neighbourhood Safer Place – otherwise called a Place of Last Resort. Ocean Grove is

designated a medium bushfire or grassfire risk. Fires threatening the north and Northwest would most likely be grass fires travelling up to 15kmh. Any fires that start in the Nature Reserve could cause spot fires in the township up to 30 minutes ahead of the fire front arriving. That means locals must have their own survival plan worked out in advance of fire danger days. More information from Co-ordinator Kylie Dixon on 0417 585757 .

OCEAN Grove Marketplace’s Bakers Delight has taken top honours in a Victoria-wide, baking competition. Owner Anthony Fisher and his team won overall first place at the recent bake-off. A total of 32 Bakers Delight bakeries throughout Victoria competed in the regional competition in Ballarat. Six freshly baked products were judged on the day, with judges carefully assessing these

products based on their appearance, aroma and taste. Anthony said the team’s win highlighted their commitment to providing their customers with superior quality fresh baked bread each and every time they visit Bakers Delight Ocean Grove. “To take out top honours in such a high quality competition is a real testament to the efforts of my team … we pride ourselves on our product quality,” he said.

Drop-in success As the youth liaison officer at the Bellarine Police Station, I am writing to compliment the excellent service the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre drop-in program provides to the Bellarine Youth and the community as a whole. Having been recently invited to attended the Drop In Centre’s four-day camp to Queensland with Leading Senior Constable Patty McElligot, we got to experience first hand the enjoyment the participants had while visiting Dreamworld, Wet ’n Wild and other Gold Coast attractions. In total, 39 kids, aged between 12 and 17, were given the opportunity to attend the camp, with several flying and visiting

Queensland for the first time. The drop-in program is run by a team of youth workers, co-ordinated by Nicki Dunne, who has been running the program for more than 10 years. Having been involved with this group for some time, I am continually amazed at Nicki’s level of commitment and organisation, providing teenagers with structured activities preventing them from teenage boredom so often complained about. As a member of the Bellarine police station, I wish to thank Nicki for the invitation to the Queensland camp and congratulate her and her team for the outstanding service they provide to the youth of the Bellarine community. I really love spring in Ocean Grove. As a Cairn Terrier nothing floats my boat more than chasing skinks. I crack people up every day when I go for a walk by body slamming near bushes and flowers, hoping to see a skink jump out. I look like a canine version of Stone Cold Steve Austin. I have just turned one and I got lots of presents. It’s only fair, as I have been leaving presents for my owners for ages now. Thanks to Seto and Jo who came over and did

some gardening. I was a helper for the day. By helping I was running off with gloves and tools. Hard work. Anyways, look what just appeared in my inbox from Frankie. “Hey Cheekster. day in the life — kevin downey

No place I’d rather be I WAS born and grew up in what was then a very quiet suburb of Melbourne called Greensborough. Going back there now reminds of just how busy city life has become. My earliest memories of Ocean Grove were Mum and Dad buying an onsite cabin at Wynndean and spending many summers and weekends here as a teenage boy. At that time basically the only shop was Skinners (Video-Ezy these days) and the memory of the place being packed out on most days during the holidays is still very vivid to me. As an adolescent boy, the beach life of sun, sand and bikinis was an irresistible combination. Sadly my parents split and the cabin was sold, which ended my relationship with Ocean Grove for many years. Due to a “sliding door” moment in 2005, my partner at the time and I decided that it was time to leave Melbourne behind and move down here. The only thing I regret is that we didn’t move here sooner. The seaside village vibe is as strong today as

IN TUNE: Kevin Downey is content with the Grove vibe.

when I first came here all those years ago. Careful management needs to be done to ensure we never lose that vibe. If I was mayor for a day I would do a couple of things, firstly I would take over the old Westpac bank site and utilise it as an outdoor arts, community and performance area. Then in summer I would turn The Terrace into a pedestrian mall for the holiday season. This would attract more people and add a real holiday feel to the

town. Some locals resist the idea of Ocean Grove being a holiday town in summer. Personally I think it adds a vibrant feel to the town and also brings in muchneeded tourist dollars for local businesses. My day job involves running a roll-forming business in Geelong, think wrinkly tin. Since moving here I have had the pleasure of meeting some incredibly talented and generous musicians. A flippant remark to one of

them four or so years ago about wishing I had taken up a musical instrument has lead me to actually playing drums in a couple of local bands. My musical ability is nothing compared to some of the people I have played with, but as a good buddy of mine says of his musical talent, and applies to me as well, I suck less every day. It’s a passion and a highlight of my week to either rehearse or play with great friends and great musos.

Two of the main forces behind the local scene are Dave Dorman and Jon Willard. These two guys work very hard to support musicians and to provide venues and opportunities for people to play. Thanks guys. Through this association with music I have been extremely fortunate to be involved in some fundraising activities for people who need assistance. But my pet project that I am involved in is raising money and awareness for multiple sclerosis. I have been truly inspired by Bree-Arne Chamley and her battle with this hideous disease, and her desire, while going through her own very real and personal battle, to help others. We have raised more than $10,000 in the three years we have held the annual fundraiser. I’m looking forward to supporting these events in the ensuing years. People often play the game - if you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live? I can honestly say I would not wish to live anywhere, but Ocean Grove.

WOODLANDS Pre School raised close to $4,000 at its annual fundraiser last month. The Ocean Grove pre school’s committee held a trivia night and auction on October 15 to help raise money for playground upgrades. Committee member Niki Hines said the night, themed Back to School with a Touch

of Genius, was a huge success. “70 people attended, most dressed in school-themed costumes, some even in their children’s school uniforms!” she said. “Thanks to the committee for assisting and organising the event, and thank you to local businesses who donated items for the auction.”

Primary students earn praise at Rotary awards EIGHT local primary school students were presented with junior community awards at last week’s Rotary meeting. The Rotary Club of Ocean Grove presented the Grade six Ocean Grove Primary School and Our Lady Star students with Graham Bath Rotary Junior Community Awards. The students were involved in the award

program which is based on completion on a range of components over ten weeks. These include weekly community service, physical recreation, skills development and social experience participation. The students reported on their experiences to the Rotary members and were presented with their awards by club president, Margaret Campbell.

Grown up testing OCEAN Grove Preschool’s grown ups recently gathered for a trivia fundraiser. Around 100 parents, teachers and friends joined to test their trivia knowledge and support the kindergarten by raising money through silent and live auctions. The sporting memorabilia live auction item sent all into a bidding war, with a 2011 signed Geelong premiership jumper fetching the highest price for the evening. Meanwhile the ladies had their sights set on a $500 Botox voucher from a local plastic surgeon. The evening’s organiser,

Jenny Dries, said it was great to see community spirit alive and well in Ocean Grove. “We really appreciate the Surf Club and all local and surrounding businesses for their support and donations”. Mrs Dries also wanted to thank the fundraising team Ruth Savage, Michelle Davitt, Kath Rahdon and Jodie Croswell for their help in pulling this wonderful night together. Mrs Dries said the night raised $6500 and the money would go towards the new kinder room’s equipment. The new room is on schedule to open for first term in 2012.

VCE students show off their musical talents SAINT Ignatius College’s VCE music performance students have taken to the stage to show off their hard work this year. At last month’s Potato Shed event the senior students performed musical pieces from the likes of Metallica and Bach, and everything in between. One of the highlights of the night, according to audience members, was a rendition — complete with costumes — of popular Rocky Horror Picture

Show song The Time Warp by three year 11 students. Saint Ignatius music director Linda Pape said the students had plenty of experience on stage through performing at school events and in local restaurants, and were well prepared. “(I believe that) in this subject the students should become experienced in performing for all occasions and in many settings (and) the students are provided with many opportunities for this,” she said.

Young artists recognised with top awards BELLARINE Secondary College’s budding artists have been snapping up awards from around the region. The Ocean Grove year seven and eight campus held an assembly on October 20 to present a number of art students with awards from the Geelong Show and Lions Club. A total of 14 students were awarded a variety of prizes from the Geelong Show’s student art competition for both drawing and painting entries. Bellarine art teacher Brenda Grimshaw said she was proud of the students’ hard work.

ARTISTIC WINNERS: Brenda Grimshaw, Katelyn McWilliams, Cameron Green, Sharntelle Borgwardt and Bruce Holmes.

“We’ve got some really talented artists in this school, they work really hard and they’re quiet achievers,” she said. Three other awards were also handed out by Portarlington/Drysdale Lions Club member Bruce Holmes as part of the

International Peace Poster competition. The competition is held in 200 countries around the world and requires students to produce a poster about this year’s theme, Children Know Peace. Three students were awarded first, second and

third place with the year seven winner Sharntelle Borgwardt moving on to compete in the Victorian district round. Lions Club president Robert Wilson Browne said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at Bellarine

Secondary College. “It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them,” he said. Sharntelle now has the opportunity to progress through to the national and international rounds with the worldwide winner honoured at a ceremony at New York’s United Nations building. Bruce said he believed the competition is extremely important in promoting international peace through younger generations. “I think it’s important because if you turn one onto it than more will follow,” he said.

Dedication honoured OCEAN Grove Bowling Club has been recognised as one of the premier clubs in the state in a recent award ceremony. The Community Clubs Association of Victoria awarded Karen Foley (pictured) the Assistant Manager of the Year award at the event held on October 18. The club’s multi-million dollar redevelopment was also recognised with the Best Club Renovation award. Club Grove operations manager Karen said she was humbled by the nomination and award. “I’m the type of person who just wants to do my job, stay in the background and get on with it,” she said.

Club Grove CEO Michael Lewis nominated Karen for the award to highlight the value of Karen’s personal contribution to the club. “Obviously I’m very proud of Karen, we work really, really closely as a team and we share demands and workloads,” he said. “Karen is one of the most passionate people I’ve ever met in terms of this club, she’s a great communicator, consistent in her behaviour and wears her values literally around her neck.” Karen said her favourite part of her job is the interaction with people from the staff, to the members and the public. “We are a fantastic club, I’ve been here a long time and I

enjoy getting up and going to my job every day,” she said. “We’re all really close-knit here both the staff and the members, we’re like a family and we’re all about customer service.” Michael said the award for best renovation recognised the effort the club’s members, staff and board put into the redevelopment. “The award is because of the hard work of the board, the management, the staff and the acceptance of the members, it’s not just the bricks and mortar,” he said. Ocean Grove Bowling Club was also announced as runner up for Club of the Year, Manager of the Year and Employee of the Year.

Cider range a first for the Bellarine OCEAN Grove cider lovers now have the first locally made tipple to add to their drinking repertoire. Bellarine winery Leura Park Estate has launched a range of pear and apple ciders from the Flying Brick Cider Co. The range consists of three natural ciders; original, draught and pear, all brewed on site at the Portarlington Road estate. Leura Park Estate director Lyndsay Sharp said the ciders were naturally brewed using traditional methods and made from 100 per cent fresh fruit with no added sugars and no colourings. “A lot of ciders on the market are often imported – the Flying

NEW TASTE: David and Lyndsay Sharp with Nyall Condon.

Brick range is literally the result of gathering, pressing and fermenting fresh, crispy Victorian apples and succulent Packham Pears,” she said. Mrs Sharp said a team at Leura Park Estate had been working on the development of a cider range since the beginning of the year.

“Cider appreciation has really come ahead in leaps and bounds over the last few years and for good reason – it’s a great, refreshing drink, perfect for the Australian climate and culture,” she said. “We got together over a few ciders at the start of the year and the Flying

Brick journey began.” The Flying Brick name and logo was derived from the yellow tailed black cockatoo, a bird that many locals nickname the Flying Brick. Cider maker Nyall Condon described the flavours of the three very different drinks. “The Original Cider is pure, clean and fresh with lovely vanilla notes shining through alongside loads of fresh apple sweetness,” he said. “The Draught Cider is big and generous with bold red apple varieties leaping out of the glass while the Pear Cider is light, crisp and delicate, unashamedly denoting the cider’s fruit origins.”

Bellarine Memories A wedding is a life-changing event, and a change of status of two individuals. In marrying, a couple make a lifelong commitment to each other and the marriage ceremony celebrates where they have come from and where they wish to go. It is a ceremony that is composed of elements that are important to us and that describe our values and aspirations, within the supportive circle of friends and family. More than anything it is a time for each of us

to publicly declare our own promises exclusively to each other in the form of the marriage vows. We creatively look for ways, expressions, symbolic acts, words and drama that will help to make this an event that is a memorable ritual and a demonstration of what we are becoming. It is true to say that the way to make a wedding celebration especially meaningful and memorable is to create a mood and a ‘climate’ that is reflective of your character and style, the dynamic of your relationship. The priority in planning a wedding is to achieve the right mood for you, the central couple. Everything about the day fits in with your tastes and attitudes. The Dunes At the Dunes we have one of the world’s great views - looking across the ocean from Barwon Heads bluff to the Point Lonsdale lighthouse. This beautiful setting, combined with our relaxed up-market cafe atmosphere, excellent food and good wine, makes ‘the dunes’ a great place for you to enjoy yourself with friends and family. THERE is a family of Australian wood ducks living in the pond near the footy ground in Bonnyvale Road. Thanks to Kerrie Bedson I have been watching the family for a few weeks and I can happily report that all nine, yes nine ducklings are going strong. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the mother duck caring for nine ducklings, and now that they have all survived for over a month. What a fabulous sight. The Australian wood duck is a medium-sized duck (44-50cms) with a dark brown head and a pale grey body with two black stripes along the back. Males have the darker

only take to open water when disturbed. I saw this family of ducks sitting on the grass under the bus stop in Bonnyvale Road, but they ran into the pond when I was about to take their photo. Females do lay up to 8-10 eggs at the one time, so it would not be unusual to see such a big family of ducks. It’s lovely to see so many young birds around this spring, the rain this year has certainly helped the bird life to thrive in Ocean Grove. By JENNIFER CARR

The females have a paler head with two white stripes above and below the eye, a speckled breast, and a white lower belly. Wood ducks are found throughout mainland Australia except the driest regions, as well as Tasmania. They are commonly seen in parklands and farm dams. They tend to spend a lot of their time on land and often can be found perching on logs and in trees. They will

presented a regional award to school captains, Laura Sgro and Michael Campbell before taking a tour of the school grounds. The students were proud to show off more than 80 native Australian banksia plants; a main feature of their garden. The awards were based on improvements made to

the school’s environment by students, teachers, parents and volunteers. Bellarine was one of 33 regional schools awarded a share of $10,200 to go towards further improvements. They now progress to the state-wide competition in which a winner will be announced on December 1.

MORE than 460 works went on display at Ocean Grove Rotary’s inaugural art show. Hundreds of visitors poured though the doors of Queencliff Town Hall when the show was launched on Friday night and then open to all over the Melbourne Cup weekend. The aim of the weekend show was to promote and present the work of local artists and in doing so raising cash to help local charities and worthy causes. This year’s beneficiaries are the Cottage by the Sea, the Disabled Surfers Association and Rainbow Riders. A number of local sponsors also generously donated nine cash prizes for the art show.

Sweet sounds of Sweet Delores A LITTLE bit country, a little bit folk, a little bit blue and a lot of fun describes Bellarine band, Sweet Delores. Susan Russell and Ocean Grove’s Narelle Jolley write songs that reflect the good, the bad and the ugly. Honest, irreverent, gritty lyrics over sweet melodies, signature harmonies and toe tappin’ rhythms combine to create a unique sound. Having played as a twopiece for four years, Narelle and Susan are delighted to welcome Kim Holyoake on drums/percussion and Tim Kingston on harmonica as part of their inaugural gig together at Queenscliff Uniting Church on November 5. Narelle and Susan met as members of the Queenscliff Tides of Welcome Soul and Gospel Choir and it wasn’t long before they found a musical home in each other with Sweet Delores forming in 2007. Theirs is a remarkable music story that has seen Narelle and Susan embark on a musical adventure later in life. Sweet Delores has gone from humble beginnings, taking risks and having a go as fledgling individual performers at open mics, to hitting the ground running as Sweet Delores at the 2007 Queenscliff Music Festival. Since then Narelle and Susan have played at numerous local music festivals including the

Ocean Grove Summer Festival, won awards and supported the likes of The Junes and Ann McCue, all on top of releasing their debut album, Loco. Loco was recorded in Geelong during 2008 with a stellar line-up of contributing musicians including Sarah Carroll, Chris Wilson, Tim Neale, Tim Fullerton, Simon Dawe and Alex Burns. The release of Loco enabled Sweet Delores to take its place in a fast-growing and very exciting roots music scene on the Bellarine and Surf Coast in Victoria. Sweet Delores will be playing at the Uniting Church Queenscliff on Saturday, November 5, in the lead up to the Queenscliff Music Festival. The band will also be staples around town over summer with gigs planned for the MS Mega Swim on Saturday, November 19, and Ocean Grove’s Tranquillity Fair on Saturday, January 7.

Ocean Grove Lady Golfers continue winning streak

Fun in the waves SOUL longboard club partnered up with Murf ’s surf shop and Global Surf Industries for a fun surf day at Main Beach on Saturday. Despite strong off-shore winds and small waves the event was still a sunny success.

FOR a small club, the Ocean Grove Lady golfers are making a name for themselves as fierce competitors in major events. Riding on the high of 2 pennant flags the girls continue to be successful at all levels. The district was host to Golf Victorias’ annual Spring tournament which saw 350 women from all over the state play in a 2 day event held at Lonsdale and Barwon Heads golf clubs. Ocean Groves’ Paula Clark, playing off 28 handicap, scooped the pool in the D Grade section, winning the 36 hole Gross, 18 hole Gross and 18 hole Nett events and Sally Schaller, playing off 18 handicap was runner up in the B Grade 36 hole Gross event. The club is extremely proud of these achievements against a high quality field. Groves’ team of Sally Schaller, Janet Barras, Betty Glasgow and Pam Cameron recently bought home some silverware, The Zeally Bay Cup, which is played for by district teams at the Torquay golf club. In the same event Sally Schaller won the individual

A Grade 27 hole nett event and Janet Barras won the B Grade 18 hole Gross event. Clubs big or small can go several years without bringing home a team win and the support the Grove girls show to other clubs’ events is paying dividends with this being the second cup they have won this year. At club level the ladies played in a stableford event sponsored again by L’Oreal Paris, with the winners being treated to some fabulous L’Oreal products. Marg from Discount Chemist in Marketplace Ocean Grove came along to present the winners with their products. The winners were Paula Clark (A Grade), Elaine Elliott (B Grade) and Pippa Paton (C Grade). The ladies eagerly look forward to this event each year and are grateful to L’Oreal Paris for their continued support of womens golf. The Grove ladies held their annual challenge cup, where teams from other clubs come along to compete for the silverware. 18 teams of 3 players from the district vied for the trophy with the team from

Clifton Springs being the eventual winners. This event was sponsored by Hotondo homes who have been wonderful supporters of the Ladies major events for many years, for which the Club is very thankful. Ocean Grove Golf Club always welcomes new members.

Former St Kilda AFL footballer Tony Brown joins James Rock and Kade Norquay in the slips for Collendina against Drysdale.

Three straight COLLENDINA is well placed to push for their third consecutive A-Grade win this season after bowling out Drysdale for 183 on Saturday. Drysdale won the toss and elected to bat first in the 75 over two-day fixture at Collendina.

Cobras captain Jye Hearps was the star bowler taking 4/29 off 14.1 overs, while Nathan Walter chimed in with 2/31 off 10 overs. Jamie Brennan (1/87) toiled hard with the ball and bowled 30 overs including six maidens.

Former St Kilda AFL footballer Tony Brown also made his first appearance with the Cobras this season. The Cobras went into bat later in the day and remain 0/0 after three overs.

school hockey MEET Bellarine Secondary College Year 7 student, Ned Weatherly. He can play hockey, is handy with a shot put and he can throw a discus. Last week on October 25, Ocean Grove based Ned competed in the State Athletic Championships at Albert Park finishing first in the 13 year old Shot Put and Discus events. “I went to Melbourne (last week) at Albert Park and came first in Shot Put and Discus events, which was good,” Ned said. Bellarine Secondary College Sports Co-ordinator Adam McIntosh said Ned’s achievement reflected the school’s ability to support all sport activities, not just mainstream sports. “It is fantastic for Ned to achieve a goal, it is fantastic just to make the State Athletic Championships,” McIntosh said. “It acts as a good reputation not for just for everyone in the school, but also in the community that we do support a lot of different sports.” Ned also plays as the goal keeper for the Bellarine Secondary School Year 7 Hockey team.

HOT SHOT: Ned Weatherly.

grubbers cricket

Up and running OCEAN Grove A-Grade remains in a strong position to claim its first victory of the season after day one of their two-day fixture against Portarlington. The Grubbers who elected to bat first in the Round three game at Portarlington, compiled a competitive total of 9/286 from their 75 overs.

Ocean Grove batsman Dave Bate blitzed his way to 99 with the bat and shared in a 156run partnership with youngster Zac Henderson (60). “Really happy we batted out our 75 overs in our

first two day game,” Ocean Grove coach Lucas Cameron said. “Dave batted brilliantly and was supported well by 16-year-old Zac Henderson.” Opener Pat Kuipers (40) and Mick Gill (44) also made valuable contributions with the bat.

Grove grab West ruck EXCITING Grubber ruckman recruit Michael Stewart has a lot of football smarts about him, writes Mark Heenan. The 24-year-old former Geelong West St Peters player last week signed on at the Ocean Grove Football Club for 2012. Stewart missed the entire 2011 season at Geelong West St Peters as he pursues his goal to be a doctor completing his Medicine degree at

Deakin University. Melbourne-raised Stewart says it was an ideal time to take the season off to study and also refresh his mind, body and soul. “I took a year off to focus on my studies and looking back I think it has definitely been the right decision,” Stewart told the Voice last week. “The body definitely appreciated a break. “But I definitely miss

footy.” The former Oakleigh Chargers TAC Cup representative and Box Hill VFL player said the opportunity to play with some of his ex-Geelong West St Peters teammates and a respected BFL Club was a big lure. “A few things helped, knowing a few players from my old club Geelong West they could not speak highly enough of the Ocean Grove Football Club,” he said. “When I met up with coach Cameron McGregor and Shane Jack they were very complimentary of the club in terms of the social side and things that make it a football club.” Away from football, the strongly-built Stewart who stands at 195cm knows his ‘tall’ education logics will also benefit his longer term work development. “There is a lot of research out there tall people earn more money, they might not be smarter, but they earn more,” he laughed. Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor said Stewart’s arrival was a massive boost for the club’s big man stocks.

Stewart is poised to share the ruck duties with Tom Foott, brother of Harrison, who joined Ocean Grove in 2011. “He will be a huge acquisition for us, he will be able to push forward for us,” McGregor said. “Shane Jack (Current Grubber) was instrumental in getting him to the club. “It is purely timing, he wants to do well with his studies, GFL requires more commitment to training than BFL. “He has valuable experience and his education will help fast track our kids.” Stewart played two seasons at Geelong West St Peters in 2009 and 2010 and won the club’s best and fairest honour in 2009. He joins a string of current Grubbers who have played with Geelong West St Peters in the Geelong Football League. The list includes new 2012 Grubbers recruit Liam Rock, Ben Ricardo and Shane Jack. Outside of football and his studies, Stewart runs for the Geelong Cross Country Club and enjoys travelling overseas.

Grove marathoner Kristen Wyatt has just completed her second marathon in three months.

Kristen at the double OCEAN GROVE inspirational marathon runner Kristen Wyatt is not slowing down despite running two-full marathons in the past three months. The 32-year-old has arguably had her best year to date, having won the Noumea International Marathon (42 km) in New Caledonia in August and then backing up at the gruelling Melbourne Marathon (42km) last month. The Grovedale College school teacher who runs 10km’s daily, admits she is in recovery mode after clocking up 84 km’s in her past two major events while also competing in the Gold

Coast Airport Marathon in July. “At the moment I’m recovering after I have had two marathons in a sevenweek gap,” Wyatt said. “Normally I only do one marathon a year, so I have only just done the Gold Coast half marathon. “Then I had three months for preparation for the Melbourne one and I got the call with an invitation to race in Noumea – which I did.” Wyatt, who has professionally raced in Japan, still trains regularly in the Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads surrounds. “I love running up over the Bluff (in Barwon Heads), I regularly run up over the Bluff and along Thirteenth Beach,” Wyatt said. “It is a beautiful place to train.”
