VOICE EXCLUSIVE: First glimpse at how Shell Road Reserve sports complex could look in three years

OCEAN Grove should have a $4m sports pavilion that can be shared by footy, soccer and netball clubs in the winter months and cricket in the summer, according to a draft plan put together by council consultants. Images of the proposed development show a double sided building that allows simultaneous

footy and soccer use, and one that could have wider community use. Talk of Ocean Grove Football Netball Club relocating to Shell Road Reserve has gone on for decades, and the disappointment of previous attempts has left a bitter taste for some. However, a working group of council, consultants

and importantly the clubs involved, has taken a unified approach to this unfinished business. Council adherents look to the success in delivering a swimming pool as a measure of what is possible with the right approach. The clubs will this week give their view on the wider draft plans. Pictured, one of the Hooded Plover chicks who were 12 days old on Friday, were taking the opportunity to search for food while the beach was quiet. The chicks hatch from an egg the size of a 20c coin and are flightless for five weeks. When people pass their feeding area they will often run and hide and cannot feed. This is why you might come across Birds Australia ‘hoodie’ volunteers asking you to look out for signs, put dogs on a leash when passing the 100m signed area and keep to the water’s edge. 100 metres is all it takes to save these endangered birds.

STROLLING along the beach from Collendina to Point Lonsdale on an overcast day and the chances of spotting a well camouflaged Hooded Plover are, let’s say, remote. Spotting two baby chicks is even harder. I’m lucky, I’m accompanied by Birds Australia volunteers John Murray and Laura Glenister. John has devoted months to studying what are the only surviving chicks from here to Warrnambool. Laura is a highly experienced bird monitoring researcher from England. They explain that these birds aren’t just rare – they are seriously threatened. The Hooded Plover is a fairly small bird which lives a precarious existence, mainly because they

nest on beaches where their eggs are exposed to all kinds of threats including dogs and humans who might not notice the eggs while walking along the sand. There are only 10 pairs with chicks in the whole of Victoria. Only 400 Hooded Plovers remain in the state with just 50 in New South Wales. They are already extinct in Queensland. It’s a small miracle that a pair of chicks has now lasted 12 days. This is the fourth attempt this couple of adults has had this season. And it’s nearly the end of the season. Statistically their chances are slim. These are the first chicks to hatch on the beach for five years. A whole raft of conditions make it difficult for these little critters. Many of those are difficult to adjust: kestrels, high winds, foxes

Fix trip followed up

CITY of Greater Geelong maintence staff have provided a temporary fix for a footpath hazard highlighted in the last edition of the Voice. The hazard was a

and gulls are all threatening. One of the key problems according to John has been the introduction of Marram grass along the Victorian coast. This grass was aimed at stabilising the sand dunes but has also created cliffs where there would previously have been gently sloping nesting areas. Now Hooded Plovers, which naturally nest at the high tide, have little space to go. Add to this walkers will often disturb the nests when the tides are high. Another of the biggest threats is dogs. Hence the Birds Australia volunteers have put up some notices indicating a small area where it would really help putting them on leads. quick news Pub to pub run THIS Friday sees the annual Pub to Pub run from Barwon Heads to Collendina. However, due to ongoing bridge work the run will begin on the Ocean Grove side this year - making the course slightly shorter. The pub traditionally stretches from the Barwon Heads Pub to the Ocean Grove Hotel along the beach. The legendary ‘starto-meter’ will be set up in the construction car park on the Ocean Grove side of the bridge. Competitors will be sent off from there in an orderly fashion with no shortcuts. The race proceeds along the picturesque coast to 6W exit and turns left and finishes outside the Ocean Grove Hotel (otherwise known as the Collendina Pub). Once again the pub is on board and will provide refreshments at the end of the race. After that, the group reassembles for dinner with family and friends most welcome. Why not come and support the runners. The race is organised by the Hangover Harriers which runs from Ocean Grove at 7am every Saturday.

Kiosk damage THREE youths were arrested for breaking into and damaging the kiosk at the Main Beach toilet block on Australia Day.

GRACE meet G.R.A.C.E. Breast Cancer Support Group is having its first meeting date for this year on Tuesday February 16 from 1pm to 3pm at St John of God Hospital. Speaker Sue Wright will talk about ‘wigs and things’. All welcome, old and new members. Please ask at desk for directions. For details contact Barb Cummings, B/C nurse on 5226 8888.

UNITING FOR HAITI GROVE musos are uniting for Haiti with a special concert this weekend. And just like the superband fundraisers in the 80s, these top local formers will join together for their own We Are the World grand finale. What is more the location – Ocean Grove Uniting Church – will add extra atmosphere to the event. The event is being organised

by John Bowman of the Piping Hot Chicken Shop and Uniting Church members Joan Calcutt and Lyn Mulligan – who along with the musicians are determined to do something to help the tragic victims of the Haiti earthquake. John said that Joan and Lyn asked him if he could help organise a fundraising concert. “Immediately I thought of the Blues Brothers mission to

reform their band to raise funds to save their old orphanage. My email pleading for help was replied by many local musicians offering their services. Encouraged by the music giants, our own local music stars will stage their own ‘Ocean Grove For Haiti’ fund raising concert ‘We Are The World’ at the Ocean Grove Uniting Church on Saturday February 13.

COLLENDINA Cricket Club has had to clean up again after another break in at its Minerva Road club rooms. Police are investigating the third break in at Collendina Cricket Club in as many weeks, but this time the alleged thief may have left a trail of clues. The alleged offender broke in through a window and then used a sledge hammer to break into a drink fridge. While doing this they have cut themselves badly and have

bled thoughout the building and outside. “They have serverely cut themselves on one of their hands or arms,” explained Senior Constable Shaun Moore of Bellarine Police. “They have lost a large quantity of blood in the process.” The incident is alleged to have happened at around 6am on Saturday January 30. The alarm was set off during the break in and the offender is thought to have fled on foot towards

Bonnyvale Road. The Collendina break in came less than a week before another break in at Wallington Cricket Club. In that instance about $3,000 worth of meat, cricket gear and a gas bottle were taken. * A police spokesperson said a 21-year-old Ocean Grove man has been charged in connection with an alleged burglary at Collendina Cricket Club. He has since been bailed and will reappear before magistrates at a future date.

Hannah has a ball at the Open OCEAN Grove teenager Hannah Burchell said she had the time of her life working as a ball-kid at this year’s Australian Open Tennis Grand Slam. “It was the best experience of my life”, said the 14-year-old Sacred Heart student who assisted in matches that included Peter Luczak, Marin Cilic and Bob Bryan. “I’ve grown up loving sport, I love playing tennis just don’t play competitively and thought I’ve got good ball handling skills so gave it a go. “I applied online at the start, that’s considered one of the try outs. I got through from the online there and was invited to try out at Geelong Lawn Tennis Club. There were about 30-35 trying out at Geelong. About three of us got through from there. “Then I went on to Melbourne Park and tried out there.” Hannah was one of 300 finally selected. Hannah explained the tests were all about keeping the play moving. “They test your roll accuracy and roll speed, hand/eye coordination, agility, concentration. They test your ball handling skills and how fast you can roll (a ball). That’s probably the main thing. And to have a good understanding of the rules of tennis, like the scoring system. “It was amazing. I had one day off during the whole thing.. I was in Melbourne until about 11pm some nights starting at 8.30 in the morning. (It was) a very long day. “The very first day of the Australian Open was really exciting leading up to it,

but it was pouring with rain and play was delayed for a really long time. “We have 45 minutes on court and 45 minutes off court. “The first few days I got show courts, that was pretty fun, that was a bit unexpected being my first year. They tend to give the more experienced ones to the show courts. “In the second week I got Hisense Arena. I did the Del Potro and Marin clinic match.” The pink suited helpers also stood in the firing line of 200-plus serves and elite sporting tantrums, but Hannah was fairly accepting that this went with the territory. “They tell you not to catch them on the first bounce but you get hit a lot, especially in the warm up there’s heaps of ball flying at you. I came out with a few bruises. I got hit by a 208km ball. Marin Cilic. “We really appreciate it when they say thank you but it doesn’t happen very often. Some are quite rude, especially when they are losing. If you’ve got a player that is down a few sets then that’s quite intimidating, but you get used to it after a while. We expected that. “Some of them run into you sometimes and give you a rub on the head and stuff, that’s fun. Along with tennis, Hannah has played cricked for Geelong girls team and has played since she was four and is a football boundary umpire Since 2009 the Open ball-kids do not get paid.

Above, the Shell Road Reserve Draft Masterplan: 1. Vehicle access, 2. Car parking, 3. Clubhouse/pavilion, 4. Soccer field, 5. Netball courts, 6. Football/Cricket oval, 7. Landscaping, 8. Tennis pavilion, 9. Cricket nets, 10. Toilet block. Note, the plan suggests moving soccer field 2 about 5m west to better accommodate the netball courts.

Shell show and tell THIS is the first public look at the draft masterplan for Ocean Grove’s Shell Road Reserve. After more than 30 years of setbacks the council and the stakeholders, the sports clubs and consultants behind it are confident that they are closer than ever to finding an agreed way forward. The plans, which also encompass the future of the existing Football Netball Club and Cricket Club at the Memorial Ground and Collendina Reserve, aims to address future needs as well as current shortfalls. Ocean Grove’s population is expected to increase by nearly 10,000 in the next ten years. In 20 years it could be as high as 30,000. Across the board current facilities fall woefully short in terms of quality and quantity. Infrastructure requests from the clubs included: pavilion facilities, a minimum of four netball courts (preferably six) with lighting and support facilities like benches, spectator seating, adequate facilities for females (soccer, netball, officials), playing surface improvements,

commercial standard kitchen facilities, match standard oval lights and soccer pitch training lights, cricket nets, provision for sponsorship advertising and maximise car parking (possibly tiered like Torquay). The pavilion – estimated at nearly $4m to build - would be the centrepiece of the Shell Road Reserve project and evisages a multisport building that can be used simultaneously by winter sports clubs. Grove sports clubs have rejected the idea of forming an overarching Sports Club, such as happens in Lara, so the idea of establishing a facility management sub-committee is being proposed. That group would be made up of individual tenant club representatives and would oversee and control usage, management, internal maintenance, booking, promotion and non-club based community use. The plan also suggests the marking out but not developing of Kingston Park as an overflow for junior soccer (8-11 year olds). Future sports needs derived from population expansion

would also be met with open space and infrastructure in the Ocean Grove growth area. About 8 hectares is expected to be developed as an integrated active recreation reserve catering primarily for cricket, football and netball. That would include two multipurpose ovals, one with training lights, two netball courts, a basic sports pavilion, car parking and an informal park. In the draft’s implementation conclusions its authors, Insight Leisure Planning, state that the overall cost would be ‘in excess of $8m”, plus an estimated $3.8m for the development of the open space in the growth, although a significant proportion is expected

to be negotiated as a developer contribution. “Despite the significant costs involved,” they state,” almost half of the total estimate is accounted for by the proposed construction of a new multipurpose community pavilion at Shell Road Reserve.” As the Voice went to press earlier this week the clubs were due to meet to give their views on the draft plans. Council is hopeful that cross club agreement would allow them to take the plans to the final stage and put Ocean Grove in a strong position for forthcoming state and federal election funding commitments.

Parade crossings need more signs Dear Editor I would like to see the zebra crossings in The Parade get a bit more attention as I believe that they do not stand out enough for motorists to see them clearly. On several occasions I have had some very near misses on both crossings, yes I do try to make eye contact with the driver and make sure he has seen me. It seems that drivers are busy looking for a parking and do not see the signs. I did get in touch with the council on this matter, I asked if they could put flashing lights on crossings and make sure the white lines are easy to see

as with the amount of traffic that uses that street soon wears the paint away, I suggested the council could use Solar lighting for the crossings signs. The spokesperson for the council said it would be too expensive to light the signs and as for the paint on the crossings it was considered to be adequate enough in their view. When it was pointed out that the council had just painted all the white lines in the area but not the crossings she repeated it was considered to be adequate. Thank you for you time. day in the life - noel menheere

Grove to the very core

Noel Menheere - combines his passion for gardening wtih his business.

I AM a born and bred local Ocean Grover! I grew up first in Guthridge St and then later in Breaker Court. We had a house cow for many years in a paddock near our garage (Lofty’s garage) and I had to milk her every morning before going to school at Ocean Grove Primary. I have lots of great memories from my time there, and then I went on to East Geelong tech. When I was 25 I moved 10 minutes away to Connewarre. With my business in Ocean Grove and all my immediate family living there, my wife and I plan to move back there in the future. Of course my first memories of Ocean Grove are the beach, as well as playing by the river and milking that cow! The beach, the people and the fantastic locations of the caravan parks and tourist facilities are, to me, the best places in Ocean Grove. The town seems to be growing very quickly in recent years, however the Terrace is still great the way it is. I like the feeling of familiarity and the small locally owned businesses. I love Murfs Surf Shop and the Newsagency, Ocean View fish and chips friendly, helpful staff who give great service. I have always worked in small businesses and go out of my way to support other local, small businesses. I love the croquette take away “bars” in Amsterdam and think one of them would be a fun shop to open. I am 3rd generation Ocean Grove and my grandfather

actually wrote a book called “The Grove that Grew”. He told me about the times he came to Ocean Grove from Geelong on the Cobb and Co coach! The fire station was a tin shed with just enough room for a truck. When we had meetings we had to take the truck out and bring in chairs to sit on. I played junior football for Ocean Grove and loved it. Winchelsea was the furthest we travelled for games - and Newcomb were the strongest team. In the terrace was Bill’s Fish and Chips - and I would buy 5c of chips for lunch. If you were the first customer and brought him a newspaper, you could have your chips and a potato cake for free. The growth in Ocean Grove over the past five years is unbelievable, and I hope that the infrastructure keeps pace! In the future Ocean Grove is going to have to deal with parking issues - especially on The Terrace, expansion of the town, loss of established trees and the road infrastructure. I think that a better system of roads and bike lanes would be a good thing, I recently spent a month in Denmark and saw how efficiently their roads worked with divided space for cyclists and car users. I’m not a cyclist but do think they should be encouraged, and I think that both motorists and cyclists would be safer and happier with a Copenhagentype lane grid. But that is not an exclusively Ocean Grove issue of course. Recently I have set up my own

business called TREECYCLING and have been pleased with my first few months of trading and hope that Treecycling will continue to grow as word gets out!. The business is involved with the recycling of garden/green waste. I do on-site mulching of people’s trees and garden cuttings, I also remove green waste or rubbish for recycling (to avoid landfill), provide a tree trimming and lopping service, clean yards and garages etc, AND I sell mulch which I have produced from local trees. I am particularly interested in recycling and mulching for environmental reasons such as reducing landfill and water use. I would like to develop more recycling options in the future. A website is on the agenda for 2010, so watch this space! Before this I have worked at Menheere Bros earthmoving, and I also spent 12 years working with my in-laws at Balfours Motors in Geelong. I have been in the CFA for 27 years and am also on the management committee of the hall and reserve in Connewarre. I also help out with other endeavours as needed (driving Santa down the Terrace for the Christmas Twilight Shopping etc). Ash Wednesday was my 19th birthday and at that stage I was working in Ocean Grove. I remember it was a stifling February day and by midafternoon ash was falling in Ocean Grove. News about the developing fires was being

broadcast on the radio and many of the CFA members were at the station in case we were called out. We answered many phone calls from concerned local residents who noticed the ash falling and feared that there were fires in Ocean Grove itself. Early in the evening the Ocean Grove pumper truck was called to help in Anglesea, and I can still remember the feeling in the pit of my stomach as we travelled down the Surfcoast Highway against a solid bumper-to-bumper flow of traffic evacuating the coast. In those days it was a single lane highway. That night was one I will never forget, as we were flat out locating and putting out spot fires around the Anglesea township. At one stage I was holding the fire hose when a flashover occurred which took my breath away and scared the hell out of me. Later we were redeployed to Jan Juc to wait for the advancing fire front. As everyone now knows, the wind changed direction and Jan Juc was spared. For many weeks after that, ash and burnt trees washed up along the beaches in the Ocean Grove area. I like to spend some time in my veggie garden each morning before work - fighting off the hordes of harlequin beetles and watering with my tank water! I drive along 13th beach, watch the early morning surfers and then spend my day doing a variety of work - such as trimming trees, making mulch, cleaning up overgrown gardens and carting away rubbish for recycling. After work I like to spend my free time with my wife and son, I’m not much of a party animal we walk our dogs, cook together, go to the beach, entertain friends and enjoy the fantastic array of birdlife in our yard. At weekends I spend as much time as I can in my garden and with my family - we are a very close knit trio and do most things together. My son Zach (19) recently returned after spending a Gap year in Denmark and we are still making up for lost time! He is at university and helps out whenever I need an extra pair of hands at work. If I wasn’t in Ocean Grove, I would be in Noosa Heads - my favourite holiday destination. My favourite part of Ocean Grove would have to be the main beach - on a 35 degree day with big surf.

OCEAN Grove’s Bob Smith has been recognised for the 45plus years he has put into the fire service, both voluntarily and as a professional. The brigade leader was awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) as part of the Australia Day honours. Bob, who also works at Region 7 headquarters by day, has devoted his life to the organisation having been exposed to the country ways of pulling together as a kid. “I was a country kid growing up on a farm and I can remember I was probably 13 or something and I was with the neighbours harvesting when a train started a fire down the road. We headed off to go and try and extinguish it. That was really the start of it. “With farm kids in those days that sort of thing was fairly accepted, it was the school holidays. That was in the western

district down near Berrybank. “It was quite an experience, a bit of a buzz,” he said. Bob became a volunteer in 1965 at Smythesdale at 16, legally the earliest age he could join. “I was there until 1967 and we moved into Ballarat to live and I became a volunteer at Ballarat City Brigade, which is a bit like Geelong city brigade, and is an integrated station with volunteers and career staff. “I guess that was where I really got into the fire brigade and started to gather something from it.” Bob didn’t enter the professional service until 1980 and worked for a good number of years in a pottery. “In 1980 I got a job in Geelong with what was then known as the special service department.” Bob’s journey to Ocean Grove came via Grovedale.

“I lived in Grovedale for five years. I had friends in Ocean Grove. I just liked the place. I came down here and got involved in the brigade in 1990.” In 1992 Bob was made apparatus officer and then in 1994 he was elected captain when Captain Stan Smith (no relation) retired. In his time Bob has seen the crucial transition from the old fire station in Hodgson Street to the new station in Shell Road, a search for land that began in 1998 and took ten years to achieve. So what has kept Bob in the service all this time? “I feel it’s a thing of belonging, it’s a family, one of the things that I really enjoy is trying to promote and mentor people. “I just look at the brigade members here that have put in and put in, the John Wynns of this world, the late Keith Fisher, people like Steve Gibbs and that,

they’re not looking for baubles or bangles, they’re here to do it because they’re part of the community and they’re serving the community. I think a lot of it’s about service and service above self. However it’s the smiling faces Bob takes most from. “Just seeing the smile on someone’s face. The people that came across from Bunyip to say thank you. Those sorts of things make you feel so good. When you pull up somewhere and people say ‘thank God you’re here’. “I remember going to New South Wales in 2001. We left Geelong on Christmas night and drove all night and just the look on people’s faces when we got out into the bush at the back of Sydney (with Ocean Grove on the side of the tanker). People were so happy to see us. It is really awesome.”

Main Beach chopper drama - a rescue exercise FOR about half an hour on Sunday Ocean Grove Main Beach appeared to be the scene of an unfolding drama. A rescue helicopter swooped low of the line up and hovered about 200m out from the surf club. Many on the beach stood and stared, speculating as to what was happening. Others just carried on sun baking or playing beach cricket. A rubber ducky was scrambled and headed out to the same spot beyond the choppy breaking surf.

A figure from the helicopter went into the water while the ducky stayed close. The chopper began winching up its crew member and soon a passenger was visible. As soon as they were clear of the water the helicopter moved away with the two figures dangling freely. Only, on closer inspection did it reveal the victim was wearing a yellow and red surf lifesaving hat and it became clear that this was, all be it dramatic, simply an exercise.

IF you walked into the Chicken Shop last night, you might have thought you were at a guitar master class. Some of Melbourne’s finest musicians who make guitar playing look like child’s play. For you ocean groovers out there under 30, we’re talking vintage Daddy Cool, Black Sorrows, Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons and the women of Soul, Vika and Linda Bull. The history of Australian Rock is etched on their faces and in their songs. But these guys don’t rest on their laurels (geez-stop with the metaphors Jude!). It was not only a lesson in brilliant guitar chords, improvs and riffs, but the art of how you put a song set together to keep the punters happy. They know how to bring the crowd up and get them dancing and then soothe and relax us, drugging us with their sound. Beginning with the instrumental surf classic, ‘Albatross’, which lulled us into the mellow night with smells of the sea and John’s chicken, perfect for the Grove’s surf culture. While Huib worked hard at getting the vocal sound right, Craig Horne belted out his Ozzie Blues voice with ‘Route 66.’ It’s a distinctive Australian sound and I kept hearing, “well I remember when I was young, the world had just begun….” When you have two lead guitars, like Jeff Burstin and Wayne Burt and the strong pulse of bass guitarist Wayne Duncan,

what you get is incredible depth and texture to the music. That’s what makes it great. Your ear has got so many choices. Burt’s artistry with slide and Burstin’s improvised riffs and use of pedal, created effortless solos. By song five, Chris Tabone on drums was smiling and watching him look at Burstin throughout the night was pure joy-the master and his apprentice ( no pun to another iconic ozzie band). In the second set, ‘Blues singers are liar’ and ‘Six days on the Road’ really got the dancers pumping . It’s great to see parents showing kids their rites of passage through music. Good on ya Lisa and Alex! Burstin’s solo in Highway 61 was a highlight for me. In slow tempo songs, their timing was impeccable. Tabone’s controlled rhythms on drums and Duncan’s bass is a lesson for all rhythm students. They were just easing us into the night and I loved the fade in ‘Schoolgirl’. Don’t hear too many fades these days. Or for that matter good instrumental intros. When Horne sang, ‘It’s been raining all over the world’ we might as well not been there. These guys were just in their lounge room having fun. And there’s Mr Chicken Shop, John Bowman, in his pink shirt and all smiles. Someone needs to tell John Valentines Day is next week. Grove street rodders shine at Queenscliff GROVE hot rod enthusiasts headed down to Queensliff on Sunday. The town holds an annual event organised by the Geelong Street Rodders group It has been going for about 20 years, of which the last ten have been held at Queenscliff. Previously it has been held at places such as Barwon Heads Caravan Park, Point Lonsdale Primary School and for three years it was at the Collendina Pub (the Ocean Grove Hotel). All proceeds from the day, which normally amount to a good few thousand dollars, go to the Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale Lions Club who then redistribute the money to their chosen charities. Pictured: Ray Bedson, left in the photo, has been with the GSR since 1988, Dale Peucker, sitting in his 1934 Ford Pickup, which won Top Five in at the event and also at Bright in November last year Col Hunt has a 1940 Ford Delivery. All three are members of GSR and are local Ocean Grove residents.

Mellow out on a Saturday evening

Lauche

EARLY Saturday evening found a group of us at Bar Deli, relaxing over a glass of wine and listening to the ambient tones and smooth lyrics of Bree-Arne Chamley. Bree-Arne’s compilation of music includes contemporary, self-styled, folk songs with titles ranging from “Eyes of an Angel” and “Quiet Silence” to “Mister Sinister” and “Tragically Myself Today”. Bree-Arne will be playing at the Port Fairy music festival in March and will

follow that a few weeks later with a new CD release. Lauche joined Bree-Arne and together they played a combination of some reggae tunes, notably from Bob Marley and Burning Spear. They continued with an interesting slant to traditional reggae with their alternative harmonies and Lauche even brought out his King trumpet to render a few solos.

Healthy mind, healthy body

Jeff Wilkinson.

JEFF Wilkinson has recently set up a psychology practice in Ocean Grove, providing psychotherapy to all ages for a wide range of behavioural, emotional and cognitive (thoughts/ beliefs) problems. Jeff is currently working by himself, although he has employed other

psychologists in the past under varying government contracts. Immediately before being in private practice he was a senior bureaucrat for Youth and Community Services in New South Wales, working extensively with adolescents and younger children.

Jeff has been involved in the psychology world for over 25 years. “I believe Ocean Grove is the logical place to have a private psychology practice on the Peninsula,” he said. “It is a strongly growing area, with a good sense of community, and will be close to where I’m

currently building a new home.” says Jeff. Jeff has only been in Ocean Grove in a business sense for approximately three months, although he has been working in Geelong for many years and had a residence nearby in Point Lonsdale.” He expects that the majority of his clientele will come from Ocean Grove, although he anticipates in the future that there will be clients from across the Peninsular. When asked how his business is going, he said: “It is going relatively well given the very brief time period. I have been pleased with the enthusiastic response from a small group of other local professionals and of course my clients.” If he has the opportunity Jeff would like to develop more group psychotherapeutic programs to meet local

needs in addition to individual, couples or family work which is the staple of psychology practices. He has been on a range of committees for all sorts of helping organisations in the past. This has included being a State chairperson of the Australian Psychological Society and many other health and welfare agencies. If he can make a contribution to similar organisations at a local level he will. Jeff has extensive experience in educating fellow professionals, policy and program development for local and other governments (mainly about better or improved health and welfare services), and assisting in the implementation of direct mental health services. Outside of work, Jeff enjoys the beach, travelling, theatre, movies and motorbike riding.

New appointment at Grove clinic Bellarine Osteopathic Clinic has recently welcomed Dr Candice Ridgeway, registered Osteopath, to its ranks. Candice graduated from RMIT, Melbourne in 2004 and has since worked in Cairns, Queensland and more recently internationally, in Ireland where she spent nine months. Candice enjoys all areas of general osteopathic practice with a special interest in sports injuries, being a keen sportsperson herself. Having grown-up in Geelong Candice is excited to be working on the Bellarine peninsula close to home. The Bellarine Osteopathic Clinic has been operating in Ocean Grove for almost six years when Jacinta Crawley established it as a one practitioner, homebased business. It now supports four Osteopaths and caters for clients from the whole peninsula.

Kids CFA fundraiser

TWO enterprising young Ocean Grove girls have been busily massaging their relatives as a way of fundraising for the local CFA. Last week they got the chance to hand over the proceeds of their efforts when they visited the fire station. Grateful firefighters gave the youngsters a guided tour of the fire engines and thanked them for helping out. The pair called their fundraising enterprise the the Roses and nominted the CFA after a suggestion from Olivia’s dad Steve. Their customers were aunties, uncles, a brother and whoever came around.

cancer care funds

Ocean Grove/Barwon Heads Lions Club had a busy time in January. An impromptu Pizza night held at the home of Ed & Win Corless saw the induction of two new members, Shelly Keast and Anita Featherston, with a big welcome given to those two ladies. On Australia Day the club hosted its 5th annual barbecue for the Wathaurong people who occupied this part of the Peninsula from Colac to Werribee before the settlement of the white community. The carnival which is run by the lions club opened its door to 250 young people and their parents. Lions President John Brady and Don Everett (pictured above) were the cooks while Ian and Brenda Walter set up the tables then intermingled with the crowd, welcoming them on behalf of the club.

environment

Bird of prey looks out over Grove ON Monday morning I went to the ‘Lookout’ in Ocean Grove and was greeted by the sight of three magnificent Australian Nankeen Kestrels soaring around and sitting on the cliffs admiring the view. The Nankeen Kestrel is found in New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand. The Kestrel is a small raptor (bird of prey), being only 31-35 cms long. It is ‘rufous’ or brown above and has white chest feathers. When the birds hover in the air they have distictive straight wings. It was fantastic to watch

them glide from the lookout over the beach without having to keep flapping their wings to gain momentum. The Kestrels feed on insects,

other small birds, mice and reptiles. They nest in a tree hollow or on a cliff ledge. They usually inhabit lightly

wooded areas and open agricultural areas, but can exist in a wide variety of habitats (including Ocean Grove Beach)! By Jennifer Carr

THE Victorian Government and the Australian Government have marked World Wetlands Day by investing $1.2 million in wetland ecology projects - and that includes one that borders on Ocean Grove. Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings said the funding will be used to protect and improve habitat

as well as build community stewardship of the Port Phillip Bay (Western Shoreline) and Bellarine Peninsula wetlands which includes Lake Connewarre. “The Brumby Labor Government is committed to protecting our environment because we understand it is important to all Victorians,” Mr

Jennings said. “This is a significant investment from both the Victorian and Australian Governments, and is an indication of the importance of these wetlands. “While the site remains an undiscovered treasure for many Victorians, the Port Phillip Bay (Western Shoreline) and Bellarine Peninsula wetlands are

formally recognised as wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.” Under the Ramsar Convention Australia is united with 158 other nations in its commitment to the conservation and wise use of wetlands. There is an ongoing debate on whether to make Connewarre more accessible to the public.

BARWON COAST Barwon Coast, your local Ocean Grove & Barwon Heads coastal foreshore manager, and operator of the Barwon Heads Caravan Park, the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove and the Riverside Camping Area welcomes our visitors to the coast for their summer holidays. Play it Safe by the Water With many warm summer days ahead our beaches will very popular with swimmers. It is therefore timely to remember F-L-A-G-S:

F L A G S

Find the red and yellow flags and swim between them Look at, understand and obey the safety signs Ask a lifeguard or lifesaver for advice before you enter the water Get a friend to swim with you Stick your hand up, stay calm and call for help if you get into trouble.

We have Beach Safety Signs at every beach access pathway...........take the time to read the safety advice. Dog Free Beaches The dog free beaches declaration change as from 1st February with dogs allowed back on the Ocean Grove Beach (west of 13W Hodgson St), but they must be on a leash until the end of April. This also applies to the Barwon River beaches. From 13W (Hodgson St) east towards Collendina, dogs are permitted under effective control. Effective control is when your dog is within your sight and can be controlled by voice command. Please remember to “pick up after your dog” so that other users of beaches are not inconvenienced. Use the “Scoop the Poop” bags provided by Barwon Coast. Ocean Grove Spit – Landscape Masterplan The key matters addressed in our draft Landscape Masterplan released mid December include the retention of the six week camping season on the riverside of the road and reviewing the existing provision of amenity blocks with the potential reduction in numbers, more strategically located and more environmentally sustainable. We are also investigating the best linkage from the existing Barwon Estuary walk in Ocean Grove thru to the Barwon Heads bridge – this being a project under the banner of the Barwon River Parklands . Powered watercraft speed Barwon Coast is working in partnership with the Victorian Water Police and the Bellarine Police to raise awareness of the 5knot water speed limit in the Barwon River Estuary. This speed limit applies to all water craft including Jet Skis Seals and Penguins on the Beaches Recently a number of injured seals and penguins have again been reported on our local beaches. If you see either on the beaches remember to keep well away, especially from seals, and make sure that if you have a dog that it is kept on a leash Report your sighting with the exact location and the probable condition of the animal, to the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) on 136 186, or Barwon Coast on 0400 931 893 (beaches between 7W Collendina-42W Connewarre). Free Shuttle Bus The free shuttle bus that we promote over peak summer with financial support from Coles, City of Greater Geelong, the Echo, Press Here and the local business associations was a great success with a record number of over 5.200 people taking the opportunity to leave their cars at home when visiting the beach, community parks and the shops. This is an increase of nearly 900 people from last summer. Such numbers indicate the real need for the establishment of a well serviced park and ride operation throughout January that provides frequent direct access to the beaches from car parks on the edge of town. Committee members Members of our Committee are appointed by the Minister for Environment & Climate Change thru a publicly advertised process. Adverts have recently been placed calling for Expressions of Interest and close on 15th February. Take the bowls challenge

Action from last year’s Community Challenge.

ENTRIES have opened for the annual Community Challenge bowls tournament. The Ocean Grove Bowling Club is again conducting a bowls competition for businesses, clubs and other community groups on Monday March 1, 8, 15 and 22 from 6pm. Over the past 11years this competition has proven very successful by providing a good night’s entertainment, giving players the opportunity of socialising with other members of the community and learning the game of lawn bowls and sharing a meal with your new found friends. Teams will once again consist of four players, (male, female or mixed). If your team is inexperienced and needs a bowler one will be provided on request but this player must play in second position. You may enter as many teams as you wish and you do not have to use the same players each week. It is desirable for teams to play on all four weeks of the competition. Club coach and development officer Peter Nixon said it was “very encouraging” to see so many enthusiastic locals taking part. “It fills up every year and people are

always commenting on what a great time they have,” he said. “During the games we see a lot of natural talent amongst the non-bowlers and we do try to recruit them, but they are usually too busy with cricket, tennis, surfing etc. At least this event gives them some exposure to our great game and maybe we’ll see them join up further down the track. Almost all bowlers you meet wish that they had taken the game up at a younger age.” Through the generosity of our sponsor, Ocean Grove All Makes Automotive, prizes will be awarded each evening to winning teams and there will be a premier team at the end of the competition. Once again we will be looking for Minor Sponsors so that more awards can be presented. The Ocean Grove Voice has generously donated a perpetual trophy for the premier team together with individual trophies for the players. This is a great opportunity for your business or group to have a fun time, so call in and grab an application form without delay and return it to the Club. Each year some teams miss out because they are tardy with entering - Only the first 42 teams can be accepted.

Bowls: Ocean Grove Classic Fours One of Victoria’s most prestigious bowls tournaments takes place at Ocean Grove over 3 days starting on 24th February. This annual tournament attracts many of the states best bowlers with several teams travelling from interstate to compete for the $11,000 prize money. Anyone wishing to witness some great bowls are encouraged to come along and

watch some entertaining bowls action. The Geelong Bowls Association had a strong representation of 7 Grove players in the 24 man team that competed for the Austin Roberts Shield at Bendigo East against strong combinations from the Wimmera, Bendigo and Ballarat Districts. In a day of top class bowls, Geelong won the

shield for the second year in a row. Congratulations to Grove’s representatives – Michael Allen, John Fry, Andrew Gower, Paul Cameron, Peter Patterson, Ken Thomas and Peter Nixon. In club matches played recently, Alex Slocombe and Maree Quirk took out the mixed pairs championship over John and Marie Hughes. Val Crumbie

In the swim at state level TWO young Ocean Grove swimmers have been taking part in the Victorian Country Long Course Championships in Warrnambool. Hard work paid off for 12 year old Kira Patten who achieved a notable third in the 100m backstroke. Kira joined the Geelong City Aquatic Swimming Club three years ago and is coached by Bruce Swain. This was her first time at the event. Bruce also coaches 15-year-old Maddie Blomfield who earned a place in the 100m backstoke. All the competitors had to get a qualifying time to take part.

won the 100 Up with a win over Loraine Hunt and the evergreen Keith Goldsmith added another title to his collection with a win over Roy Brown in the 21Up. With only a few home and away games remaining, many Grove pennant players are once again gearing up for the finals series, watch this space for more news on that – Go Grove

Surfers paddle out for Daryl JUST before 4pm on Sunday about 40 surfers paddled out opposite the Rotunda for a special memorial service for Daryl Sewell who passed away last month. Fighting some strong swell the group which included some of Daryl’s family formed a tight cirle around a flower leis and and held hands, some reflecting, some in prayer. As with tradition they raised their hands in the air and splashed water as seven waves came through. Afterwards they paddled back toward the beach to begin their surf session.

Surfside Centre: Friday volleyball results Division 2 Phantoms Heroes vs Young Ones Phantoms Heroes winning 3 sets, Young Ones winning 1 set Heroes 25-19, 22-25,2523,15-9 Tip Rats vs Hit Me Tip Rats winning 4 sets 25-18, 25-13, 25-13, 25-13 Surfcoast Grovers have a bye Division 1 Team Wave vs Bandits Team Wave winning 1 set, Bandits winning 2 sets Team Wave 22-25, 18-25, 18-13 First game for the season saw Team Wave have a bit of a hard time in the first 2 sets, even though it was close. There is only 3 original members of the team together with new players coming in and others transferring from other teams. It was good to see Roger Helwig playing for Team Wave this season and he hasn’t lost any of the spark that he had when he played Division 2 so many years ago. It’s good to see that once you play it doesn’t take long for those skills to come to the fore, this will be an exciting season for this

team. Another player coming back from retirement is Peter Caddy who showed his style with some great spiking and setting to see his team win the last set. As with Roger once those skills start to kick in it will be good to see this team perform in the coming weeks. It is hard coming up against a team that has played together for many years in Bandits. This is a team which love to play together and have a good time, even though at times they were tested. Having some very experienced players on their team helps. Having Claire Jones back as setter is going to be good for Bandits as she plays State League, and seeing Anne Kuklych play some awesome volleyball. Its good to see that the family all enjoys the sport. They have gone their separate ways this time with husband and wife on different teams and sister and brother separate too. This year Peter (father) and Daniel (son) are playing together and Anne (mother) is in one team and daughter Jess is in another team. So this will be interesting this season. Phantoms Black vs 6 Pact

Phantoms Black winning 2 sets, 6 Pact winning 1 set Black winning 25-14, 8-25. 19-8 Phantoms Devils vs Stingers Phantoms Devils winning 2 sets 25-20, 25-14, 6-10 It’s good to see that Phantoms are encouraging other players and teams with one team in Division 2 and now two teams in Division 1, making up players from Division 2 who are looking for a more exciting, faster type of game. Teams sometimes do change around at the start of each season as some players decide to retire or move because of work commitments. It is really encouraging to see that regardless of the Division everyone is accommodating. Division 2 with starting out with the skills and Division 1 with those players wanting more competition. So it will be an exciting season coming. If you are free Friday nights why not come down to the Bellarine Acquatic Centre and see these two styles of games and see the fun that we all have. Hope to see you all there.

Former refugees get a first taste of beachlife A GROUP of former refugees, some of which have been in camps for 20 years, visited Ocean Grove Main Beach at the weekend. The group of about 80 people, mainly families, were refugees from Burma and had been in camps on the Burmese Thai border. Some in the group were born in the camps. For many of them this was the first sight of a beach. Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club helped host the visit and the lifeguard patrols explained a little

about what they do. The visit was organised by Diversitat in Geelong which is helping in their resettlement in the Corio area. About 150,000 people are believed to housed in nine camps along the border. A large number of those affected come from persecuted, mainly ‘Karen’, ethnic minorities that have been forced to flee Burma. Diversitat has also been involved in visiting the border camps. GRUBBERS A’s seem to have been spurred on by the success of the Twenty20 side. They dispatched the reigning premiers for 140, Chris McSween doing a chunk of the damage with a 3/40. They sit at 4/47 as they go into the next day’s play. Shaun Fankhauser’s 57 kept Bs in the reckoning as Grove will now have to defend a 147 score with Barwon Heads currently on 1/27. Cs notched up 161 on their first day with Barwon Heads resting on 0/5. Dale Savage 43 and Craig D’Arcy 35 combined to help Grove on the way. In D Grade 1s Terry Birch amassed a notable 64 but it wasn’t enough to give Grove the edge over Anglesea where they fell 183 to 159. The D2s were luckier, defeating Wallington in a very low scoring 48/4 to 44. Matthew Bate did the damage with 4/6 and Shane Thorley chipped in with a 3/18.

Scores in the 4 games were: Bellarine 30 defeated Werribee 10; Bellarine 18 defeated Collingwood 16; Bellarine 32 defeated Eltham (2) 11, and Bellarine 31 defeated Overnewton College 4 The game against Collingwood went down to the wire with the girls narrowly pulling off a one goal win. Although not reflected in the score, the game against Werribee was a very

tough and physically hard fought battle. The girls then played Werribee again in the semi final. It was a very determined Werribee team who put up a great fight and the scores were a lot closer this time round with the lead changing a number of times before the Bellarine girls finally got the upper hand late in the second half to win 17-13. This put them into the grand final against Eltham (1) The first half was very close with only a matter of points separating the teams at half time. Again the girls finished strongly in the second half and “Stormed” to an 18-11 win. Carly Sanders was named MVP of the grand Final. It was a great team effort with all girls playing a vital role in the team’s success.
