Grove stunned by school knife incident OCEAN Grove has been stunned by the news that a year seven pupil was threatened with a knife by another on local school grounds. During the incident, which is still being investigated by Bellarine Secondary College, a student is said to have threatened to slash the throat of another. The incident happened at the Ocean Grove campus. The
offending student has since been suspended and police have issued a statutory caution. Principal Colin Sing said that parents should be reassured that this was an isolated incident and they have never had anything like this before. “This is a one off,” he said. “I can confirm that a Yr 7 female student was found in possession of
a knife. “I absolutely stress that this was an isolated incident at this school. The student has been suspended and the matter referred to police. “The College absolutely does not accept this type of behaviour and will work closely with students, parents and police to ensure students behave appropriately when dealing with each other.”

Ocean Grove firefighters have been kept busy with call outs in the last fortnight. That peaked with four calls to incidents on Saturday. Above a call to a child trapped in a car in the Parade car park and right a pole fire in Lowe Street. Crews were also called out to a car accident in Shell Road Point Lonsdale on Sunday night. However, until Saturday all the calls were in support of other crews two to Queenscliff, one to Barwon Heads and one to Portarlington.

Say on sport plan OCEAN Grove residents now have the chance to comment on the draft Ocean Grove Sporting Infrastructure Plan. The draft was developed after extensive consultation with the sports clubs, community members and stakeholders in Ocean Grove. for a variety of sports in Ocean Grove,” she said. The draft plan will be available for residents to read over and provide comment from Monday 8 March until Friday 2 April. Copies of the draft plan and feedback forms will be available for viewing at the following locations: • Ocean Grove Customer Service Centre - The Grove Centre 66-70 The Avenue Ocean Grove • City Hall Customer Service Centre - Gheringhap Street, Geelong • Council Website www. geelongaustralia.com.au “I encourage Ocean Grove residents to take the time to look at the draft plan and have a say about the future of sporting infrastructure in their town,” said Cr Farrell.

Vandals daub clubrooms LESS than two months after suffering three break-ins, Collendina Sports Club has now fallen victim to an overnight graffiti attack. On Thursday last week vandals daubed tags on walls, doors and patio windows leaving club members – a club dedicated to young people – frustrated. “It’s just ridiculous, it’s just one thing after another,’ said club stalwart Leigh Norquay. “Just as you
get one thing cleared up then another thing comes along.” Council workers set to work on Friday and managed to clean most of the graffiti on the clubrooms but more was still visible on the scoreboard when the players came to play finals at the weekend. Police sent their graffiti squad down to photograph the vandal’s handywork in the hope they can identify the perpetrators.

60 years of give and take
Long Term Ocean Grove residents Owen and Lorraine Holbrook celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary in style. Their daughter Lynne organised a limo to collect them to take them to a special family party at Werribee Open Range Zoo. Lynne explained that her mother said she had always wanted to travel in style. She should have known her daughter better than that – last time she told her she had never had a 21st birthday party. Lynne also arranged that, all be it when Lorraine was in her 70s. Better late than never. The limo was left as a complete surprise to the couple as they headed for the party on Sunday. Both the couple are well know Ocean Grovers.
Owen was born in Lismore and came to Ocean Grove in 1935,Lorraine was born in Brisbane and came to Ocean Grove 1948. When the 2nd World War broke out Owen and a group of men from OG went off to fight in various places. Owen saw service in New Guinea and Borneo, before being discharged back into civilian life in OG. The couple met through the result of the Chalet Guest House fire. Lorraine’s parents were the proprietors at the time and Owen was Fire Brigade captain in the early years. They were married at St Peters Church on the 11 March 1950 and still live in their original house in The Parade.
Excitement builds for Ocean Grove youth club reunion
Lorraine and Owen were both involved in the Bowling Club from its Opening Day in various capacities. Owen was in the Development Commitee, purchasing land as well as the leveling of the first greens. Lorraine bowled for many years and organised many entertainments for the club. She has recently compiled and published a book about its Entertainment History. Owen was also involved in Tok H, the RSL, running Mitchell Park (Grubb Rd) and various local community activities. Owen was a pupil at the local primary school at the age of 10 and later Lorraine taught there for 20 years. As local business owners/ Holbrooks’ Road and
Concrete Constructions.. as well as being early and still current residents of the Grove , Owen and Lorraine have seen many changes. They were among the earliest residents of the Grove and two of the few longest living residents to this day. They have two adult children, Adrian and Lynne and 3 grand children. On Sunday the stretch limosine took them via a scenic drive through Geelong to Werribee Open Range Zoo where they enjoyed a lunch with their family followed by a private safari tour …up close and personal with the animals. On the way the couple was asked for the ‘magic ingredient’ for 60 years? “Give and take,” replied Lorraine.

Back to their youth: Corry De Rooy (Loosdrecht), Patrick Wools, Juliana Chapman (Wools) and Hillie Coster (Koerntjes) all used to attend the Ocean Grove youth club.
Peter Wools was one of the organisers of the Ocean Grove youth club, pictured here with his wife Agatha.
MORE than 100 youngsters passed though the old Ocean Grove youth club, a group of grown up members want to bring them back together. OGYOC began meeting in the early 1950’s however it was officially opened August 1967 for Ocean Grove youths aged 10 to 21. The children gathered weekly to participate in activities from ten pin bowling and trips to the cinema to mouth organ lessons.
Meetings were held in the Ocean Grove Public Hall situated where the library now is on the corner of Presidents Avenue and The Avenue. A BBQ picnic will be held on Sunday March 21 at Ocean Grove Park from 12 noon to give past members a chance to catch up and swap photos and stories. If you were part of the Ocean Grove Youth Club during the 50s-70s come along and meet some older friends.

No space to park I am writing to “voice” my concern for our Ocean Grove car parking space. We are told that there is going to be another 2000 homes built between Banks Road and Grubb Road – that can easily equate to a minimum of another 4000 cars in the area. Where are they going to park when they shop either at The Terrace or Market Square? Where are they going to park when they go to Ocean Grove
Main Beach? It’s all well and good to talk about increasing the population of Ocean Grove, but what about the rest of the infrastructure? How will our roads cope with the increase in vehicles? Then let’s talk about the proposal for the Shell Road Reserve. There are already car parking problems at the Bellarine Sports and Aquatic Centre on certain days of the month where the rear of the facility is required
for overflow car parking – right where the “possible future tennis expansion” may be. The Shell Road Reserve is a great idea for our local sports people, however, is there enough car parking provided for a Saturday when there is the potential to have to cater for football, soccer, netball, tennis and a busy swimming pool? Not to mention a “possible neighbourhood house”. And do we need another set
of traffic lights? I believe our round-a-bout system is working extremely well. My husband and I try to vacate Ocean Grove during the busy vacation period to give the holidaymakers our space – we don’t want to be battling for car parks all year round! Let’s see some realistic planning happening please. Shirley Callinan Ocean Grove
Duplication not a solution IT was nice to leave suburbia for Ocean Grove. Bellarine Beach Country, that’s the life for me and I will go into bat to protect it: Coastal spaces, urban boundaries and green wedges between each town to prevent ribbon development around the coast and retain the rural landscape. Keep the old fire station. Why sell off sadly lacking infrastructure? Barwon Heads Bridge. Retain the heritage and reduce traffic through the town. Policies become meaningless mission statements. Process becomes a charade. The politician has no control over the department or am I just in the minority? That’s OK, but I shudder to read that VicRoads plan to duplicate Grubb Road. VicRoads, who put up five bridge options for public comment, set up a hearing panel and proceeded to build something else. A bridge that has destroyed sand dunes, a beautiful family beach, heritage and has done nothing to alleviate traffic congestion. Will they bother to seek public comment before they bulldoze the trees along Grubb Road? Why duplicate Grubb Road? There are bottle necks at The Parade, Shell Road and the Bellarine Highway. Traffic flows well; the speed camera has a field day. A bike track would be good; they
could do that without destroying the environment. Of course there is a lot of housing development planned and I always complain about lagging infrastructure. The tree canopy along Grubb Road will help beautify and hide the new city style development and help retain the very reason why people wish to live here, Bellarine Beach Country. There is a predicted huge increase of traffic pollution in our cities. Planners are now advocating village life: - live, recreation and where possible work in a village/suburb as opposed to commuting from the centre to the edge, to and from satellite communities. The wheels of change are in motion. There are many, many initiatives for us to lead cleaner, greener lifestyles. VicRoads are perpetuating 20th century destructive systems. VicRoads receive a lot of tax payer’s money and appear to be a law unto themselves. They build roads; other than move traffic from A to B they appear not to look at the environmental and social impact of their actions. The money would be better spent on public transport, a better bus system or another train for the Geelong line. John Bowman Ocean Grove

day in the life - alex schipperen
Happy in bush by the beach MY partner and I moved from The Netherlands to Ocean Grove in December 2007. We are what you can call ‘new immigrants’ and are starting to call Australia, and in particular Ocean Grove, home. Recently we had to vacate our rental house, so instead of looking around all over the Bellarine we decided to look for a new place in town. Luckily we found one and Ocean Grove is home! I was born in an industrial town in the South of the Netherlands, called Waalwijk. When I was two or three years old we moved to the eastern part, near the German border. After 15 years of military service, my dad had found a job as a teacher at a technical college, so the whole family relocated to this rural part of the country. I still have a lot of friends back there, and some of them have already paid us a visit! It’s great to show friends the beauty of our Victorian Coast! After primary school, both of my older brothers went to Christian College Almelo, so I had to go there as the youngest sibling as well. Didn’t really have a choice I guess, but I’m glad I didn’t! It was great to have 2 older brothers who taught you all the skills needed to ‘survive’ secondary school. I’m not sure if they felt the same, because I must have been the little annoying brother asking a million questions about nothing and everything. Of course our first memories of Ocean Grove are quite recent compared to others featured in ‘A day in the life’. In Barwon Heads we were looking at the VicRoads traffic sign saying ‘Ocean Grove 3km.’, so we decided to have a look ‘on the other side of the Barwon River’. We had no idea what to expect. Our Lonely Planet guide didn’t mention anything, so there were
Alex Schipperen.
no expectations. Well, to make a long story short, it didn’t disappoint us at all! In my memories that drive over the spit took forever! And of course the fin shaped bollards in the main street - I was questioning myself why a town would put shark fins in their main street…. It didn’t take long to realise that surfing was pretty big in town. In The Netherlands I was involved with my Dutch boy scout group for 22 years or so, and officially I’m still a member but haven’t visited them lately. The good thing is that quite a lot of members have had a good excuse to visit Australia, and of course enjoyed a stay in Ocean Grove as well. Some of them are wearing an ‘I love OG’ T-shirt on the other side of the world! What I like most about Ocean Grove is that it is so green compared to other towns on the Bellarine. Beautiful mature old trees line the streets in Old Ocean Grove and the various wetland reserves contain great birdlife. I always enjoy reading Jenny Carr’s section about the environment in and around Ocean Grove.
The OG Nature Reserve is a great spot as well. It’s good to see Parks Vic and the Friends group doing so much stuff out there. I was a biology teacher at a secondary school for 6 years, but stopped teaching when we moved over to Australia. It was a great job and the kids I dealt with were great too. Honest and direct probably the mentality I like. I have thought about picking this up again here in Australia, but I have a different passion that still tries to achieve the same thing: engaging people to protect their own Australian environment. I started my role as a Volunteer Engagement Officer at Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) about a year ago and it is great to see so many people offering their time to volunteer with us. CVA runs practical conservation projects all around the country, and in our Geelong office we focus specifically on the greater Geelong area. In the last year Ocean Grove has been visited by dozens of volunteer teams, achieving great outcomes like weed
control in Buckley Reserve at Collendina, restoring yellow gum habitat in the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve, planting indigenous plants in the new Yellow Gum Reserve and works on our forsehore around the ‘Dunes’ and on the ‘Spit’. During the week my days are pretty set, with Monday, Thursday and Friday taking care of the coordination of volunteers over Victoria and other community involvement activities in our office. Tuesdays and Wednesdays I work on a reserve west of Bacchus Marsh rehabilitating a heavily degraded 200 Ha property. Every day can be different; varying from erecting rabbit proof fences, planting indigenous plants to installing a viewing platform. If I could open a shop in Ocean Grove, I would be caught between two thoughts, but neither of them are realistic: starting a quality outdoor shop or a specialty shop for marine aquaria. When I had a marine aquarium, I propagated corals so other aquarium enthusiasts could start growing them in their marine tanks. This would make it unnecessary to harvest corals from unprotected coral reefs around the globe. It was always my dream to create a sustainable marine aquaria trade, but I’m not commercially minded at all, so it will probably just stay a dream. Ocean Grove is missing a lot - and that’s what makes it nice probably! If it did have a railway station, cinema, an Aldi or a massive shopping mall it would lose its atmosphere. The vibe Ocean Grove has at the moment is the one I would like to keep. Well, there is one thing that Ocean Grove is lacking: decent television reception. I thought it was just our shonky antenna system! I think as a non-citizen
I am not allowed to vote, so the chances for me becoming the mayor of OG or COGG are quite small, but if this miracle could happen I would try to involve residents, both young and old, to care proactively for their own street, reserves and natural areas. People in town have great ideas and when they get a sense of ownership and responsibility for a place, great things can happen. My favourite shop is just outside of Ocean Grove. The Elkhorn Roadhouse started a couple of months ago and has great food and coffee. I like to go there on a Saturday morning with my partner and get a nice brekky with a good cappuccino. Yummmm Every holiday or long weekend my partner and I go out to do some camping, hiking and enjoying the great outdoors that Australia has to offer us. It’s great to camp in National Parks and seeing some amazing places that make you realize why you live in this beautiful part of the world. It’s not a matter of getting enough time for it, but of making enough time for it. Often there are other things that need to be done around the house or with friends, which are important as well. Well, plenty of places we still need to visit, so I better plan my next trip! If I wasn’t living in Ocean Grove, I would still definitely be in Australia, and probably in small, more rural, town like Anakie and Deans Marsh. I love little towns with a general store, lots of space and still within reach of the big smoke. But on the other hand I’m quite sure I would miss the beach, and the whole vibe that comes along with it. We’ll see where we end up! My favourite part of Ocean Grove is somewhere between my front and back yard, … yeah … I’m quite sure I could live there.

shining as Paul Carrigg took to the stage for the first set. Funfair rides, food stalls and farm animals as usual prove a huge and constant attraction throughout the day. There were no seats – or bales of straw - left when the ‘old boys’ The Rustys struck up. The boys who are now just a month away from the Global Battle of the Bands, were given a special cheer.

New member success for first open day
Focusing on attracting new members: Michael Beavis and David Gilroy.
Some of the hardworking Ocean Grove RSL welfare team.
OCEAN GROVE RSL sub-branch plans more open days after successfully recruiting several new members at their first attempt. Members say they would have liked to have seen more people through the doors but were happy with the number who signed up at the Sunday event. Next time they may stage it just before ANZAC Day to tap into the growing popularity of that significant event. During the day at Club Grove, some members set up information tables and explained a little more about how the local organisation works and others brought along memorabilia.
The Ocean Grove RSL team gave details of the work they do and also took the opportunity to try and enlist more helpers. Visitors also had the chance to try out bowls – Club Grove membership comes with RSL membership – and the Ocean Grove Barwon Heads Lions Club put on a free sausage sizzle. If you can offer an hour or two a week the welfare team would love to hear from you. One of the major tasks they have is visiting ex-service people in the local nursing homes. For more information contact Ron Johnson on 5255 4847.

Nick Lovell set for Grove farewell show NICK Lovell is performing a farewell to Grove show at Piping Hot Chicken Shop this weekend. The singer songwriter who has blasted onto the local music scene despite having grafted at his trade for many years, is returning to Melbourne for family and study reasons – but he maybe back in time. Lovell’s song Flow like a River has been really well received and was given heaps of support by local station K-Rock. Nick Lovel grew up in Geelong before heading up to Melbourne for almost ten years. He came back to the Grove in the middle of last year when he launched his CD Imaginary Boy. “We are sad to go, because we love it in O.G, but the winds of change have blown on through. I am doing the gig as a bit of a farewell gig to my friends, (although we hope to come back one day). Lovell is playing at the Chicken Shop on Saturday March 13, from about 8pm onwards.

Kurt’s back FORMER Ocean Grover Kurt Williams will be back for a performance in his home town. Now living in Sydney, Williams is bringing his original reso-phonic guitar playing and slide technique to the Piping Hot Chicken Shop on Saturday April 3. At times his guitar finger picking becomes a relentless cascade of angry notes, but Williams can also take you on a tender journey with his gentle approach to the National guitar. He displays a sophisticated method of playing thumping bass lines alongside electrifying lead breaks. Williams’s voice moves between the extremes of a menacing growl and a smooth, heartfelt croon. In his writing he uses the voices of vulnerability, strength and, faith to convey his stories, which are set to a platform of awesome blues rock and sweet playful ballads. His stage persona evokes a toughness and honesty that appeals to the punters. Williams currently has a few musical projects. His premiere project is ‘The Kurt Williams Band’ which features himself and brilliant drummer Guy Hughes – a man whose mastery and control of the skins is truly awesome.

Ocean Grove/Barwon Heads Lions Club hosted the zone final of the Lions Youth of the Year at Bellarine Peninsula Church of Christ on Sunday February 28. Judges were Chris Niven from the NAB Ocean Grove, D’Anne Taskin and Pastor Peter Lethbridge, seen here with contestants. Nicholas Stevens, Leah Sampson and Tim Auret.
Report from Snr Sgt Gary Coombes thefts from vehicles Again there has been a spate of the thefts from motor vehicles, mainly due to the fact that vehicles were left unlocked. Make sure that the vehicle is locked (even if only going to be absent for 5 minutes). DO NOT leave items of interest, i.e. cameras, IPods, mobile phones, GPS units, handbags, etc. in full view in the vehicle. If you do not wish to take them with you, then leave them locked in the boot. Burglaries – household security Three burglaries have occurred in Barwon Heads this month. Now that most of the Holiday properties are vacant, it is time to clear your gardens of overhanging bushes, etc. It is important to make sure that your house is clear from the street so that invaders (thieves, vandals, etc.) cannot have clear access to your doors or windows. Make sure, even when someone is in the house, that all outside doors, sheds, garages, etc. are kept locked. People not in full-time residence, make sure that you arrange with a neighbour or friend to clear the junk mail and local papers from your letter box or front yard. Property security Small etching tools are available from
Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators to engrave your Drivers Licence number (prefixed with the letter “V”) on all your goods, i.e. TV, IPods, bikes, etc. Felt Pens, which invisibly mark property that would be damaged by engraving, are also available. These pens show up under a Black Light at the Police Station. Graffiti This offence has increased in recent months and it is hard for police to apprehend anyone unless they observe the offence being committed. Make sure you notify the Police immediately, so that they can follow up as soon as possible. Hoon drivers When witnessing a driver acting as a Hoon, take registration number, colour and description of vehicle and forward to Police as soon as possible. This will enable the Police to follow up the offence. It should be noted that the Crime Stoppers Hoon Line number now replaces all Municipal/ Police numbers. The new number is : 1800 333 000 Urgent Police attendance should still be directed via: 000 Pedestrian crossing in the Parade When crossing the road in The Parade make sure that you use the crossing. One is on the North side of the entrance near Coles Store and the other is on the South side near The Clinic. It should be remembered that crossing a road/street with 20 meters of a Pedestrian crossing will incur a fine. Thought for the month Remember that Daylight Savings finishes at the end of March. Don’t forget to put your clocks forward one hour. This is also a good time to check the batteries in the smoke alarm.

Delighted to be at Market Place THE Market Place franchise of Baker’s Delight has recently passed over to Anthony Fisher. Anthony who has worked with Bakers Delight for over 15 years, and has been in many roles with company.. “In my last role, I was a Business Consultant for Bakers Delight, dealing with several Bakers Delight bakeries across Victoria,” he said. “I am also a qualified baker having worked for Bakers Delight in Vancouver Canada, New Zealand and many states in
Australia. “My wife and I have lived in Ocean Grove for over five years, and couldn’t think of anywhere better in the world to live and work! Ocean Grove is growing rapidly, both in population and infrastructure. This is giving people the opportunity to shop and do business within the community, rather than travelling into Geelong. We always try to support as many local businesses as we can and are more than happy to help out in the local community.
“I currently have five very skilled Bakers and 11 extremely talented shop assistants working for me. I plan to expand our team and also continue to grow our business. “Business is going extremely well, we bake fresh products everyday delighting our customers with a great range of traditional breads, savoury items right through to grain and sour dough breads. We are also moving into our busiest time of the year, Easter! Everyone loves our fresh Hot Cross Buns! And
we also have a fantastic Easter Hamper up for grabs at the moment!” Outside of business hours Anthony is a passionate surfer. “Growing up on the coast in Warrnambool I have surfed my whole life and have been lucky to have travelled the world in search of great waves. Surfing is in many ways my therapy. I’m also a passionate Geelong supporter. Go Cats!” For more info on Bakers Delights products, please visit www.bakersdelight.com.au
Local travel agent is a getaway winner OCEAN Grove’s Harvey World Travel has won the firm’s Agency of the Year Award. The Market Place based firm was announced as the winner during the first ever Harvey World Travel ‘Full Steam Ahead’ Business Symposium which took place aboard P&O’s Pacific Dawn. “Our team has worked very hard and we want to say thanks to our clients for helping make this happen,” said owner Carol McCarthy. “We don’t do our jobs to receive recognition or awards, but this win certainly provides encouragement and reassurance that we’re on the right track with satisfying our clients’ needs.” Harvey World Travel Managing Director David Rivers said: “We’re very proud of the team at Ocean Grove for their hard work and their dedication to their clients. The Ocean Grove team certainly sets the bar high.”

OCEAN Grove’s Bar Deli has launched a sandwich delivery service. Sandwich deliveries are pretty common in the cities and now Ocean Grove’s own CBD can boast one. Owner Kerri Maxwell says the beauty of the service is that it can help the one-person shop get a lunch without shutting their doors at the busy time. The restaurant/coffee shop makes up the sandwiches fresh every morning. “ I had the thought years ago. So many shopkeepers are one-up and have to close to get a lunch. “People have been really positive and if they have ideas we try and help them. “ Team member Nicole Kearsley delivers the ice packed sandwiches, fruit, fruit drinks and fruit salads - or whatever else they order, from around 10.30am on weekdays through the lunch period.

End for toady THIS is a very different nature report as the creature I am writing about was washed up on the beach in an obviously extremely deceased state. I hope the photo doesn’t freak everyone out too much! The Toadfish is also known as a Pufferfish, and when I was a kid we used to call it a ‘Toady’ The Toadfish is a sandy colour. with small brown spots over the back and upper sides (hard to see in this photo due to the sand). A ‘Toady’ has small gills located just in front of the pectoral (breast or chest) fins. Toadfish is also covered with small prickles, and does not have any scales like most other fish. They also have very large eyes. As you can see from the photo its teeth are fused together and form a beak-like structure. The Toadfish scientific family name Tetraodontidae means “four teeth”. They seem to be smiling in a weird sort of way. The species is found in shallow coastal areas along the eastern coastline. I often see ‘Toadies’ swimming around the boat ramp in Ocean Grove. Some interesting facts about Toadies are:
Washed up: a Toadfish.
1. They eat other sea creatures such as molluscs and other fish. 2. They often hide around rocks or in seaweed, or in a channel dug into the sand, to ambush their prey. 3. Toadfish can survive out of water for as much as 24 hoursthey must be able to trap water in their gills to enable the diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxidevery clever. The Toady in this picture was not surviving outside the water
however, it had no signs of life at all! 4. Males attract females by making a singing sound that has been compared to a hum or a whistle. (how romantic). The sound is caused by air movements near the creature’s swim bladder. The swim bladder is a gas-filled organ found inside the fish that allows it to control its buoyancy (or ability to keep afloat). The sound can sometimes be heard on the surface of the water.
5. The Toady males will attract numerous females to his nest, so that the eggs within the nest usually have been laid by several mothers (what a disgrace, no wonder they are poisonous with behaviour such as that!) 6. The Toadfish is very toxic to humans and should not be eaten. I don’t think that the seagulls were too interested in having a feast on this Toady either. RIP Toady By Jennifer Carr

BARWON COAST
Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. Our Committee members are all local residents from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and are appointed by the State Government following the public advertising for expressions of interest. Ocean Grove Spit – Landscape Masterplan The key matters addressed in our draft Landscape Masterplan released mid December include the retention of the six week camping season on the riverside of the road and reviewing the existing provision of amenity blocks with the potential reduction in numbers, more strategically located and more environmentally sustainable.
Centre Toilet Block, Ocean Grove Another upcoming major project for Barwon Coast is the redevelopment of the Ocean Grove Main Beach amenity block. The existing building is to be demolished and replaced with a new facility on a smaller footprint using environmentally sustainable products and reduced energy inputs. Tender documentation has been forwarded to a range of builders and subject to satisfactory tender pricing works, the demolition will commence mid year with completion pre summer 2010/11 Dogs on the Beaches The dog free beaches declaration changed as from 1st February with dogs allowed back on the Ocean Grove Beach (west of 13W Hodgson St), but they must be on a leash until the end of April. This also applies to the Barwon River beaches.
We are also investigating the best linkage from the existing Barwon Estuary walk in Ocean Grove thru to the Barwon Heads bridge – this being a project under the banner of the Barwon River Parklands.
From 13W (Hodgson St) east towards Collendina, dogs are permitted under effective control. Effective control is when your dog is within your sight and can be controlled by voice command.
A draft of the Landscape Plan is available for review at www.barwoncoast.com.au/riverside-camping and at our offices. We are looking for community feedback by early March 2010 which can be sent to Barwon Coast c/- Post Office Barwon Heads 3227
Please remember to “pick up after your dog” so that other users of beaches are not inconvenienced. Use the “Scoop the Poop” bags provided by Barwon Coast.
Hodgson St Car Park The car park at the bottom of Hodgson St Ocean Grove is a very popular access point to the ocean beach. Whilst not a patrolled beach area, the area is popular with dog owners being the access point to the beach area where dogs are permitted under effective control and where picnic tables are provided for great views of the coast. The pedestrian cycling trail from Collendina thru to Barwon Heads along the coast also adjoins the car park. We have released a draft masterplan for the area that proposes the redevelopment of the car park to provide for safer traffic movement; a better interface with the pedestrian / cycling trail; improved stormwater management and revegetation work. The draft landscape plan is now on display at Hodgson St near the beach access, for your perusal. Barwon Coast is looking for feedback on the draft plans by early March, prior to those plans being lodged with the Department of Sustainability & Environment for Coastal Management Act consent
Natural Resource Protection The pair of Hooded Plover (a threatened species) sighted at 40W recently, are now only being seen intermittently. The pair did establish a scrape nest on the western side of Blue Rocks, but the eggs were lost when illegal camping took place over Christmas. However the pair seen along Buckley Park foreshore east of Collendina have chicks and a new nest scrape observed on the west side of Black Rock. Our fox baiting program at the west end of 13th Beach in support of our Hooded Plover management continues along with the annual rabbit control program for the coast strip from the BH Bluff to the Breamlea Caravan Park. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager Barwon Coast, Ewing Blyth Drive, Barwon Heads office@barwoncoast.com.au

Flying start for chicks THANKs to sympathetic locals at Ocean Grove, two threatened Hooded Plover chicks on Collendina beach are just days away from fledging. As previously reported in the Voice, they will be the first chicks to fledge from the beach in five years. Birds Australia volunteer Laura Glenister, who has spent time talking to locals on the beach about the Hooded Plovers, said that the response of the Ocean Grove beach users has been particularly heartening.
“People have kept their dogs leashed near the fenced nest sites, and some have even changed their walking route for a few weeks to give the chicks space,” she said. “This is just the reaction we are looking for and this response has contributed hugely to the success of the chicks.” There is still a second nest which is being incubated about 1km east of 5W. The nest site is fenced off and the chicks are due to hatch very soon. It will then
take five or six weeks for these chicks to fledge, all being well. To give the Hoodies the space they need to bring up their chicks, beach users are kindly asked to keep a look out for signed areas on beaches, which indicate active nests, and to keep dogs on leashes in these areas. One hundred metres of undisturbed space is all the chicks need. Video footage of the Collendina chicks can be viewed at http:// www.vimeo.com/9635892 Birds Australia and Gordon
TAFE have developed a survey to collect feedback about conservation measures used to protect the Hooded Plover along the Victorian coastline. It takes about 15 minutes to complete and will remain completely anonymous. You don’t need to be a bird expert to fill out the survey. If you visit ocean beaches on the Victorian coast, then your opinion matters. Find the survey at www. surveymonkey.com/s/NTH3K6L

vacant in the grove
Ocean Grove Voice, March 10-23, 2010 - Page 23
Left to right: the Olive Pit is moving into larger premises and a new occupier is due to takeover, the Terrace Bakery has been vacant for more than a year, while the Voice reported in the last edition that Ocean Grove Fish and Chips was closing.
Left to right, Kairos has moved to larger premises two doors along, leaving the end shop vacant. Two further shops are vacant in the Parade hub.
Empty shops... what do you want? SCORES of local retailers are on the move to larger premises, hopefully showing the Grove is a great place to develop a business. At the same time a number of vacant premises have either been dormant for a while or are about to become unoccupied. So what shops do we need in Ocean Grove? If we had a say on what we really need what would you open in our town. The Voice did a quick poll at the
office and came up with the following suggestions – a boating/boat hire/ fishing/dive tours shop, a bowling alley (on the industrial estate), an arcade for teens (similar to Timezone in Geelong), an art store, a small electronics store, Mal Toffolen’s kebab shop (currently in Barwon Heads), a chocolate shop or use the space to build a town hall / arts venue. What do you think we need? Email news@oceangrovevoice.com
Two large shops in the new Ocean Plaza are yet to be let, although there are expected to be occupied by Easter. Half a dozen businesses are already in the mall and additional outlets are expected to include ice cream and mobile phone kiosks and a restaurant.
Despite being used as an outdoor furniture store during the summer the old fire station in Hodgson Street remains unoccupied. Many locals had hoped it could become a hub for arts and music when the state sold it at auction two years ago.

Grove offers up a classic OCEAN Grove’s newly crowned Club Champion Michael Allen represented the town in the Geelong District Champion of Champions and came out victorious over Queenscliff ’s former State Rep Steve Sullivan. Michael then travelled to Portland last Sunday to represent the Geelong District in the Group 2 Champion of Champions competition and proved once again what a champion he is. His next mission is to play against the other 7 country zone Champions, good luck Michael. In the Ladies Pennant, our Number 3 side has won it’s way through to the Grand Final with a good win over Leopold at Clifton Springs last week. If they
win the big one then they will be promoted to Division One to make 3 Ocean Grove sides in the top Division. In the Division one Preliminary final it was Ocean Grove 1 versus Ocean Grove 2. After a close start Ocean Grove 1 went on to win and now has a chance at yet another premiership. Grove’s second side should be extremely proud of their season getting so close to playing off in a grand final, well done girls. The next issue of the Voice will have a report on how Grove’s girls acquitted themselves in the Division 1 & 2 Grand Finals. Our men’s Division 5 side is also playing finals this Saturday – good luck to all the teams.
The Ocean Grove Classic Fours competition was once again a hugely successful tournament that rates amongst on of the best in Victoria. There were top teams from all across the state to compete for the $11,000 in prizemoney and there was some great bowls action to witness. Club Grove was highly praised for it’s professionalism in staging such a prestigious event. The club’s facilities, in particular the greens were outstanding as was the catering and hospitality services. The winning team was a composite side of current and former state representatives who have now won the event 2 years
in a row. Matt Flapper and Peter Loe(Essendon), Ken Thomas (Ocean Grove) and Russell Simmonds(Eaglehawk) were the only undefeated team, winning all their 8 games over 3 days. Our Community Bowls competition is now in full swing with 168 locals taking to the greens on a Monday evening. The standard of bowls is not quite the same as that witnessed in the Classic Fours, although there is probably more fun being had. For anyone that’s interested, now is the perfect time to give bowls a try, so come down to the Club for some free introductory coaching and a guaranteed good time.

This third event was the biggest so far with many new faces seen in both yellow and blue rash vests. There was also a visit by the Premier John Brumby and Lisa Neville MP, with the official handover of two new beach wheelchairs and a grant of $5,000 to the surf lifesaving club.
The DSA Vic committee would like to pass on their thanks for the support and generosity of all their sponsors, who without their help the Victorian Branch would struggle to exist. The next event days and social activities will be advertised later this month.

A number of Junior boys and girls also participated in the Open events with Sapphire Main, Cassie Vincent and Gus Harfield progressing to the Open Women’s and Men’s finals respectively. With Josh Johnson-Baxter competing in the WQS event at Burleigh Heads the Open A’s fought hard to get important points to give them a head start in the aggregate competition. Shawn Todd just edged out
Cam Lamperd with Simon Collier in third and Gus Harfield fourth. Open B saw Nic Stephens take out his first comp win in an open division, Lewie Speranza placed second in his first club event for a couple of years. Last year’s Open Women’s winner Ash Ward has remained in good form taking the points from Sapphire Main who surfed extremely well in the difficult conditions.

Above Patrick Kuipers unwinds on this Newcomb ball, on his way to a solid 35. Grove’s C grade side defeated Portarlington in their first finals fixture. Meanwhile the club has picked its season’s best and fairest. For A’s it was Chris McSween and Corey Bampfield, B’s it was Luke Hardiman, C grade Craig D’arcy, D1s Jack Kent and D2s Colin Bate.
B’s marching on Kuipers slips this one around while Newcomb weren’t watching.
