OCEAN GROVE’S NUMBER ONE NEWSPAPER
Original bridge builder’s son is last to walk it
FREE FORTNIGHTLY
Here comes the vote AFTER a pretty brief election run up, its getting close to the time when marginal Corangamite makes its decision. One thing’s for sure, the choices are greater than in 2007. And its all those extra candidates and parties that will make this vote that much more volatile. Whichever way you go though, make it count, or you can’t complain later.
END OF THE ROAD “I CAN always remember laying in bed and hearing the noise of the planks. In the old days the planks were all loose. On a frosty night when there were no other sounds you’d hear it go clink-clink, clinkclink as someone drove over. You’d hear all the noises. “It’s been here a long time, the old
bridge an icon.” Bill Tait’s family name is as much a part of the local history as the bridge. Fittingly he was asked to be the last person to walk the bridge before contractors began dismantling it last Thursday. His father Ron worked on the original construction, driving the piles in during the lean years of 1926-
27. “The equipment that they had compared to what they have now was nothing and yet they built the bridge in less time. “ Bill’s nostalgia for the bridge is qualified by his own dad’s observations.“Dad said its time was up in the 1960s, when they put concrete decking on it.”
Bill took his final stroll across the old bridge just after the last car. Introduced to the site superindenant, Bill said: “End of the line.” “No it’s the start of a new era,” the super answered. “Yes” said Bill, “You’re probably right.” Ocean Grove traffic is now using the partly built new bridge.
Pollies are in town. Above Labor’s mobile billboard and below the Liberal candidates car.

LOCAL teens now have their own health centre in the Bellarine, writes Carly Helweg. Three tiers of local government turned out on Friday to celebrate the opening of Headspace Bellarine. Lisa Neville, Darren Cheeseman and Jan Farrell all attended the opening ceremony to show their support for the initiative. Designed as a mental, health and wellbeing centre for youth aged 12 to 25, Headspace has centres in Geelong and Corio, however the campaign to give Bellarine its own outlet began in 2008. Headspace Barwon manager Toni Van Hammond said Drysdale and Ocean Grove
were listed in the top 8 postcodes of people using Headspace’s services in the Geelong area. “It demonstrates it’s the right decision putting services in this area,” she said. Located at the Drysdale school precinct, the location was chosen for its proximity to local schools and arts and sporting hubs on the Bellarine. Ms Van Hammond said it also means local youth won’t have to travel to Geelong to seek help. “It’s important because we can give them choice of where they can go for services, somewhere local, quick and easy,” she said. “It’s incredibly important for them to access care sooner rather than later.”
FRIENDS and family, bowlers and RSL members joined together for a farewell service to Carl Verbeek, who sadly passed away on July 23. He had lived in the Ocean Grove area for 23 years and was on the board of management at Club Grove as well as playing an active part in the local RSL. Tributes came from his grandsons who spoke about their pride and love for Carl. The boys who learned to play lawn bowls with their grandfather later had a roll for him on Ocean Grove’s greens. Carl’s daughter Paula Plunkett praised her dad who the family lovingly called ‘old boy’. “Dad was so proud of his four grandsons, James, Jack, Harry and Bradley,” she told those assembled at The Wave. “They meant the world to him. He would always say ‘how you going my mate’, give them high fives and lots of cuddles. “If we needed any help he would always say I’ll be there, don’t worry, it’s not a hassle. Dad was always the first to say to anyone that he could help out.
“Dad we will always remember you for your strength, devotion, passion, desire, willingness, bravery, determination and love that you showed towards us throughout your lifetime. We will carry this in our hearts forever. Till we meet again, we love you old boy.” Club Grove general manager Michael Lewis spoke on behalf of the bowling club. “What a fantastic gathering today and I guess testament to Carl and who he touched and who he reached out to,” said Mr Lewis. “One of my staff said recently, it’s people like Carl that you meet along the path of life who have touched your heart in some way that you will never forget. “Carl was a great clubman. He had a unique character. You could never ever doubt his passion: his passion for his family, his passion for our club and his passion for the sport of bowls.” Carl leaves his wife Rosemary, daughter Paul and son Rick and four grandsons.
At the opening of the new Headspace facility in Drysdale.
Ms Van Hammond admitted there are public transport issues for kids getting from Ocean Grove to Drysdale, however they were going to observe how the system works initially. “We’ll monitor the site over the next couple of years and see where the community is growing,” she said. The centre will offer
counselling services including drug and alcohol advice, has a community health nurse and is in the process of acquiring GP doctors and the possibility of a bulk-billed psychologist service. At first it will only be open half days Monday to Friday from 1-5pm from August 10 until demand is determined.
Fire calls OCEAN Grove Fire Brigade has seen relatively few call outs in the last month. Until Sunday all the incidents had been out of town. On Saturday July 24 crews were called to Point Lonsdale to deal with a small small structure fire in Lawrence Road. And then on Wednesday July 28 they were called to deal with a fire confined within a non-combustible container at a property in Seabanks Barwon Heads. A small non-structure fire was dealt with in Ocean Grove on Sunday. * Anglesea is the nearest town to hear details on the Bushfires Royal Commission report.w Details at www.premier.vic.gov.au

In a meeting with the Federal Minister for Veteran Affairs the Hon Alan Griffin, the Ocean Grove RSL demonstrated how it is taking a leadership role in the community and safeguarding its future. The meeting - hosted by Federal Member for Corangamite, Darren Cheeseman and held at the RSL’s new home at ‘Club Grove’ – looked at ensuring the branch’s long term role as it seeks to continue to support local veterans. ‘Club Grove’ Ocean Grove Bowling Club is undergoing a $5M refurbishment and its
community focus will incorporate a lounge and meeting space for the local RSL group while providing them with a space to house memorabilia. This will be a vast improvement to the aged facilities that the RSL was previously housed in. Ocean Grove RSL secretary, Brigadier David Gilroy said the merger with the bowling club was a good fit, “The bowling club wanted to become more than just a bowling club, they wanted to become a community club.” With the deterioration of the former RSL club
house, Brig Gilroy was aware that a new residence was imminent. He said that the previous residence was “very ordinary” and that there were no funds available to be spent on it. Since the amalgamation there has been an increase in memberships, “The memberships have increased from 105 RSL members to 142,” Brig Gilroy said. “With increased memberships we are able to expand our welfare base and look after the ageing community on the Bellarine Peninsula.” The Minister fielded a range of questions from the veterans, ranging

Craft with a nod to Aussie culture While growing up west of Geelong on a small farm near Derrinallum we were fortunate enough to holiday in the Barwon Heads Ocean Grove area for many of our summer holidays. Upon finishing school I attended Agricultural College near Sydney before following my passion to work around wildlife in Northern Australia and Kenya. With some of the travelling bugs out of the system, I have spent the last ten years living between Drysdale and Ocean Grove, and would not want to live anywhere else. Our business involves making a range of bronze birdbaths with Wrens, Willy-Wagtails, Magpies and Cockatoos welded around the rim of the birdbath. The birds look as though they are getting together for a chat, sharing a drink, a story and having a bit of a laugh; very much a bit of Aussie Culture in there!

Will Wilson in his workshop in Ocean Grove.
Nearly all our suppliers are in the industrial area and main street of Ocean Grove, and with the stunning coast on the doorstep, there is nothing else we feel we need in the Grove. Our concerns are more about protecting and improving what we are lucky enough to already have. The Ocean Grove main street does need improving - it is tired. My suggestion would be to have a small local committee including
a town planner and a proven designer to come up with a make-over in conjunction with locals and approach the local member after the election for grants and funding. Ideally the main street could be blocked off and become pedestrians only, tastefully paved, and include areas with a fountain, other artworks and attractive planting. With no vehicle access it would be possible for the cafes to extend more into the street with more
tables and umbrellas, which would allow and encourage a greater cafe culture to develop and flourish in the town. This would in turn attract a greater diversity of shops and benefit the whole community. I would also recommend the shop fronts having a makeover so the whole place oozes style and it becomes a destination for locals and tourists alike which supports local businesses. The other job for the
committee to solve would be the parking problem. The ideal solution would be to build a huge car park under one of the existing car parks. Parking is already a problem which concerns everyone in Ocean Grove and with the population expected to double very quickly planning really needs to start now to improve the main street and fix the parking problem. We want Ocean Grove to be unique and a preferred destination.

State view - Lisa Neville MP Bob Smith Like many of you, I was greatly saddened by the recent death of Bob Smith, Captain of the Ocean Grove Fire Brigade, a highly respected and loved local identity. Bob’s dedicated service to the CFA spanned 45 years and the term ‘going the extra mile’ was frequently used to describe him. He achieved iconic status in the service. I first met Bob almost eight years ago when he came to see me about the need for a new fire station in Ocean Grove. We had many meetings together and his passion for the CFA at Ocean Grove was evident. I know that he felt great pride the day we opened the new station in Ocean Grove. It was one of his great achievements to ensure his team at Ocean Grove was provided with state-of-the-art facilities to support the essential work it does in that community. My sincere condolences to his family and to the Ocean Grove fire brigade members. He will
be greatly missed. Bellarine VICSES gets boost As the Member for Bellarine I was delighted to join with members of the Bellarine VICSES Unit in Drysdale to celebrate the hand over of a heavy rescue truck and refurbished boat, thanks to State Government funding of $250,000. Because of our growing population and popularity as a premier tourist destination, the Bellarine Peninsula relies on the strength of its volunteer emergency services, so the truck and refurbished 4.5 metre boat will help local VICSES volunteers as they respond to a range of emergencies both on land and sea. The state-of-the-art truck will make Bellarine VICSES members’ jobs easier, especially as they respond to road emergencies, while the refurbished 4.5m boat (one of two 4.5m vessels being refurbished for the unit) will

help volunteers as they work to protect recreational boat users around this famous coastline. Bellarine VICSES Unit’s 25 volunteer members answer up to 100 storm, flood and road rescue call outs a year and do a remarkable job of protecting their fellow community members, from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads right around the peninsula to Queenscliff, Portarlington, Drysdale and Leopold. The State Government is proud of the work Bellarine VICSES Unit volunteers do, and is committed to providing them and their colleagues across the state with the resources they need to carry out their vital work. Funding and toys for Bellarine children’s services I’m pleased to report that two Ocean Grove-based services have been successful in accessing grants and resource kits, sharing in more than $13,000 of State Government funding.
The grants and kits are aimed at helping occasional care, family day care and outside school hours care programs comply with new regulations. Under the new regulations these programs are required to be licensed for the first time. These kits and grants are about supporting services with high quality resources for the children in their programs as they transition. The local Bellarine recipients are: After School Hours Care Service, Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre Inc., and Outside school hours care service, Ocean Grove School Holiday Club. Congratulations to all those involved with these terrific local services. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact my office if there are any issues I may be able to assist you with. Rotary’s Victor Harnath, Bill Walton and Richard Grimmett with Ocean Grove Home Hardware’s Paul Drake.
Blink before you bin bulb STOP before you bin that bulb or fluro tube! Did you know that more than 10,000 tonnes of mercury contaminated waste goes into landfills across Australia every year. In landfill mercury can convert to methyl mercury. This toxic and volatile gas can easily escape into the environment.
However, Ocean Grove Rotarians and two local hardware stores have got together in a bid to reduce this. Collection points have been established at Home Hardware and Wallington Mitre 10. Last year more than 3000 tubes and 3000 globes were saved from going into landfill waste and of that Ocean Grove
contributed 540 tubes and 288 globes! The Rotary initiative called ‘Blinky Bulb’ has been developed by the Rotary district which extends from Ocean Grove to Swan Hill and to the South Australian border. Rotary has a group called Preserve Planet Earth (Water & Environment)
which is the driving force behind BlinkyBulb, working in cooperation with regional waste management groups in Western Victoria including Barwon Regional Waste Management. Local Rotarian Richard Grimmett said that the aim of the program is to set up a process so as many people as possible
will have access to convenient, safe and costfree disposal of their used fluorescent tubes/globes. Home Hardware’s Paul Drake said: “It’s a brilliant, fantastic idea. Very good for the environment.” Please take bulbs and tubes to staff in the local stores. For details see www.blinkybulb.com.au

grove votes The Corangamite candidates have all been campaigning hard in preparation for the August 21 election and have used every opportunity to get across their policies and election promises. With only ten days until we go to the polls, The Voice has taken the opportunity to slip in some last minute questions. We also asked them to dig up an old photo of themselves, some succeeded, others were unable. Ann Wojczuk Family First
• What is your favourite thing about Ocean Grove? People who smile and have a chat… and (sorry – one is NOT enough) that sensational slice of sand and surf we call OG Main – the colour, the light, the changing surf. • What will you provide the people of Ocean Grove if elected? Being neither Liberal nor Labour, I will lobby freely for Ocean Grove’s people. I will push hard for more public transport, more local family GPs, more childcare and infrastructure that really is capable of supporting and enhancing coastal community life and environment. I will also work to see all our kinders and schools supported. In particular - Ocean Grove campus of Bellarine Secondary College, funded and completed as a modern, well maintained, fully equipped school with grounds that are a great environment for kids instead of the paddock we see now.
The major parties have not done enough for this region for a long time. Call me cynical, but the best thing that could have happened for our area is that Corangamite is a ‘marginal’ seat. As we have seen in the last 6 months, Labour and Liberal are throwing money and promises around. This is great for the area!! I’d like to be in Canberra to see they follow through!! • What will you do about our public transport or lack of it? Increase the frequency, hours and routes of the buses. • Have you ever swum the river from Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads? Not right across…. • When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? A zoologist or an artist • What piece of technology can’t you live without? Sorry, too much technology!! Give me nature, sea, sky, friends! Darren Cheeseman ALP
• What is your favourite thing about Ocean Grove? Just the relaxed vibe of the place, which I think comes from everything that surrounds the town, the sea, the river, Lake Connewarre, the beach, and the great sporting culture. • What will you provide Ocean Grove if elected? The $2 million upgrade to Shell Reserve. Completion of all local Ocean Grove school upgrades. The new incentives for GPs to come and work, or stay working, in Ocean Grove. Access to the new Southern Geelong Hospital. We are also looking to train more nurses to provide services for the Ocean Grove area. • What will you do to improve Ocean Grove’s public transport system? Work with the State Government to build better bus services, particularly links to the new GeelongMelbourne Fast Rail service that the Federal Government is funding. • Have you ever swum the river from Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads? No, but I would really like to do some night fishing there. • When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A geologist because I’ve always been interested in how the world was made. • What piece of technology can’t you live without? My glasses. Nathan Timmins Liberal Democrats
• What is your favourite thing about Ocean Grove? In summer time it’s always nice to come to Ocean Grove and go to the beach; play some beach cricket, body board, or just enjoy the sunshine with friends. • What will you provide Ocean Grove if elected? I will provide strong representation, and be highly receptive to the concerns of the electorate. I will support plans for the improvement of sporting infrastructure in Ocean Grove, and seek to improve the public transport system. • What will you do to improve Ocean Grove’s public transport system?
The bus system needs improvement. There needs to be an express service to Ocean Grove so that travel time from Geelong is reduced; the frequency of services also needs to be increased. I will endeavour to make that happen. I also think the trial service that ran late on Saturday nights (similar to the ‘Night-Rider’ in Melbourne) from Geelong to Ocean Grove, and other areas, was positive and should become a permanent thing. • Have you ever swum the river from Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads? No, but I think that at low tide even I, with my fairly average swimming ability, might be able to pull it off. • When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? I always wanted to be a lawyer and fight for the underdog. • What piece of technology can’t you live without? Mobile phone; can access the internet, listen to music and stay in contact with people all in one. Mike Lawrence The Greens • What is your favourite thing about Ocean Grove? The people that work together on so many community projects that make up the uniqueness of OG.

• What will you provide Ocean Grove if elected? A strong community focus and relocalisation of regional activity and infrastructure that supports Primary Health Care, including increased development of preventative health programs, Education, including the expansion of kinder to a 2 year program prior to school. This requires the inclusion of early years facilities in the Building the Education Revolution package. Labors program falls short of this very needed investment in early years education. The Liberals will drop it altogether as part of their austerity package. A Price on Pollution, giving stability to business planning for the renewables boom. Funding for local arts that is accessible to everyone. What will you do to improve Ocean Grove’s public transport system? Clean, frequent, reliable and connected Public Transport systems and the development of work from home or local serviced office incentives are at the core of the Greens Ocean Grove transport solution. • Have you ever swum the river from Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads?
No, but I am happy to take up the challenge will my political counterparts! • When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Bigger. • What piece of technology can’t you live without? Fortunately I have no reliance on any technology to maintain life....but a well funded public health system, including free dental, will likely enhance my quality and length of life. Sarah Henderson Liberal Party
• What is your favourite thing about Ocean Grove? My favourite thing about Ocean Grove is the magnificent surf beach. I love it in summer … but being a resident of nearby Barwon Heads I am drawn to it just as much in winter. There’s nothing better than rugging up on a cold winter’s day and going for a long walk with my son Jeremy. Preserving and safeguarding our environment, especially along our precious Corangamite coastline, is incredibly important to me.
Of course our magnificent coastline has been spoilt by one hideous addition – the second Barwon Heads bridge. This symbolises everything that is wrong with Labor and reminds me everyday of how Labor governments disregard the community. I am appalled by the heavy handed and unjust way that this redevelopment has been imposed on the people of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads in the face of such considerable community concern. • What will you provide Ocean Grove if elected? A Coalition Government will provide $2 million towards the development of the Shell Road Sporting Precinct in Ocean Grove. This will be a great asset for local sporting groups and for the whole community. The standard of sporting facilities at Ocean Grove is currently very poor and this important development will be a wonderful asset for a growing community. And if elected I will provide responsive representation for everyone in Corangamite. My door will always be open and I will always put the interests of my constituents above political considerations. • What will you do to improve Ocean Grove’s public transport system? Public Transport is primarily a state government issue. If elected however, I will always advocate on behalf of better services for my constituents. Of course, I
newsdesk 5255 3233
note that any influence I would be able to bring to bear on such state government matters would be greatly increased by a Coalition victory in the upcoming Victorian election. • Have you ever swum the river from Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads? Yes I have swum from one side of the river to the other. I have to confess it was when I was a teenager and it was low tide!! Some of my closest school friends had holidays houses in Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove … so growing up I spent a lot of my time by and on the river, swimming and sailing. • When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a magistrate when I young … I liked the idea that you could bang your gavel and command people’s attention. If only it was that easy in politics! • What piece of technology can’t you live without? The iPhone is the one item of technology that I find I cannot do without. Sally-Anne Brown Independent
• What is your favourite thing about Ocean Grove? The beautiful user friendly surf beach, the local music gigs at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop, the laid back feel, friendliness and pride of the local community • What will you provide Ocean Grove if elected? What the community wants - the sporting precinct, community hall, private midwifery care, improved transport and infrastructure that is eco friendly and uses local trades people first • What will you do to improve Ocean Grove’s public transport system? Interconnecting the peninsula and geelong with small eco friendly buses • Have you ever swum the river from Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads? Yes and I loved it ! • When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? A nurse • What piece of technology can’t you live without? My camera - it captures moments that I love - especially watching my son grow.

newsdesk 5255 3233 Do you think Ocean Grove needs more female GPs? Carly Helweg asked locals.
Hans and Heather Franken have retired after 23 years of running Ocean Grove Hire.
Hire business changes Hans AFTER 23 years, Ocean Grove Hire has changed hands. Hans and Heather Franken have handed over the keys to a new generation of owners to enjoy their retirement years. The couple’s final day in the shop was last Monday and both said they shed some tears on what was a bittersweet occasion for them. “When you do something for that long you get involved in it,” Hans said. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a sick day in 23 years.” The Franken’s took over the business in 1987 which specialises
in hiring out tools and industrial equipment. Initially located in Smithton Grove, they moved the business to the more prominent position on Grubb Road in 2002, growing the business from just two to six staff. “Once we came down there it was a whole different ball game because people could see us,” Hans said. The business has had its ups and downs, struggling through the Pyramid collapse in 1990 but Hans said that he has always enjoyed the interaction with the customers. “The people you meet, you’ve got
good staff and good customers,” he said. “We just want to thank all our employees and customers for their loyal support during the last 23 years,” said Heather. “We wish the new owners every success.” Hans said that although it’s hard to be sure when to retire, at 65 he and Heather are keen to use their time to enjoy going to the gym, spending time with their five grandchildren and travelling around Australia. “We may as well make the most of it before we get too old and crotchety,” he said.
Kim Conell, Ocean Grove “I’ve just moved to Ocean Grove and haven’t needed to go to the doctors but I go to Point Lonsdale as they can be friendlier there.”
Christine Lomas, Wallington “I find it hard to get appointments and it’s really important especially for young girls to see a doctor of the same sex.”
Edwina Norgard, Ocean Grove “They do, you just can’t find one down here and then you can’t get in. It’s also hard to find someone regular so I go to Drysdale instead.”
Melissa Nolan, Ocean Grove “Yes, they’re only part time so it’s hard to get into them.”

Fitting send off for Capt Bob Two separate guards of honour were formed and Ocean Grove firefighters acted as pall bearers for Bob Smith’s service at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Ballarat.
THEY began arriving more than an hour and a half before the service was due to begin, such was the esteem this organisation held for Ocean Grove Captain Bob Smith. Coaches upon coaches of blue uniforms of the Country Fire Association assembled in the forecourt of St Patrick’s Cathedral in Ballarat. They were joined by Rotarians and other friends who travelled up from Ocean Grove and Geelong. They had come to farewell variously titled Capt Bob, Smithy, Bobbie, Big Fella, Tiny or just Bob - the big-hearted local firefighter who lived by his own motto ‘I may not be the best - but I’ll do my best’.
Bob would have been used to this crisp July afternoon in mid Victoria. He began 45 years of CFA service at Smythesdale aged just 16. Some 15 years later he entered the professional service and devoted his life to his job and those he worked with. St Patrick’s Cathedral holds about 1500 people. The building was full to capacity and an estimated 200 were unable to get in. The congregation at the Catholic service heard tributes from the state’s highest ranking officers, including Chief Officer Steve Warrington, Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria’s Gary Little and Barwon South
West Region’s Bob Barry. Ocean Grove 1st lieutenant John Wynn spoke on behalf of the brigade. John and other officers offered their condolences to Bob’s brother Bruce and his family and thanked them for allowing the CFA to be a part of the funeral service. Members of Ocean Grove CFA placed symbols on Bob’s coffin. A family eulogy was read out by Bob’s nephew Tim Smith. Bob was recognised earlier this year with the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) as part of the Australia Day honours. The AFSM is the highest award firefighters can achieve and is very rarely awarded.

UN debate takes over the Potato Shed BELLARINE students hosted a simulated United Nations General Assembly Session on Friday. Held at the Potato Shed in Drysdale, the conference sessions ran throughout the school day and included about 100 students from ten Geelong and regional colleges. The conference was conducted under the auspices of The United Nations Association of Australia in conjunction
with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. It was run according to United Nations General Assembly protocols and procedures with students organised into teams of two or three students and representing different countries. They had to debate and vote on a resolution regarding Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Number 3, which aims to tackle gender equality.

So if you run a group and would like to utilise this new resource please contact Julie for availability of the room. Coffee Machine Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre also purchased a coffee machine. All of our participants are enjoying freshly brewed coffee. Coffee is available to all community members at a cost of $2.50 per cup, so if you are walking by and are in need of a caffeine fix pop into the centre. Coffee on offer is Latte, Cappuccino, Mochaccino, Hot chocolate, Long Black, Macchiato and Flat White. Tuned for GPAC SURFSIDE Primary School band and other Bellarine schools have taken centre stage along with other Bellarine schools at Geelong Performing Arts Centre this week. From August 10-13 Surfside is taking part in the Geelong Schools Music and Movement Festival (GSMMF) which is part of GPAC’s Bendigo Community Banks Education Program. Now in its 64th year, the festival gives students the opportunity to shine, as they sing, dance and perform in rock bands and orchestras on The Playhouse stage. For many students, the festival ignites an ongoing love of the performing arts and
for many schools, it is a celebration of the creativity that exists within the school community. The Geelong Schools Music and Movement Festival will showcase a variety of acts from 38 schools as young people from throughout the region come together to perform on the Playhouse stage for friends, family and fellow students. GPAC is pleased to announce the return of VicRoads as a major sponsor in presenting this historic, much-loved event. Performances will take place until August 13. Tickets $5 each and are available from the GPAC box office, phone 5225 1200.

Wildes about town The Wildes are set to play at Ocean Grove’s Piping Hot Chicken Shop this Friday, August 13. The young four piece band from Melbourne wear their old-school Americana influences on their sleeve but bristle with Aussie exuberance. In a live setting they get to show their larrikin side – delighting audiences in pubs, clubs and theatres – more often than not to full houses. Their blend of alt country and indie folk has drawn comparisons to artists as diverse as Steve Earle, Nick Cave, The Waterboys, Gram Parsons and Wilco. After a hiatus towards the end of 2009 the Ballad of a Young Married Man album was still winning accolades, finishing runner-up for Album of the Year at Radio National alongside Lisa Mitchell’s much praised debut.

A splash of colour
HEYWARD CONSTRUCTIONS P/L

THIS Crimson Rosella was photographed in my backyard, eating olives off the next door neighbour’s huge olive tree. A flock of Crimson Rosella’s were enjoying the olives, in fact they were making such a mess I thought they may have needed a bib each. The Crimson Rosella in the photograph is a young bird that has not quite established all the crimson feathers. They are said to ‘ripen’ as they age, and they turn from green to red. As you can see the bird in the photograph is undergoing this process. Young Crimson Rosellas have blue cheek
feathers, and the remaining body plumage is green-olive to yellowish olive. There are several variations in the colouring of adult Crimson Rosellas, but mostly they have red feathers on the back and wing, and blue cheek feathers. The tail is blue. Females are smaller than males, and males have a wider beak, otherwise they share the same colouring. Crimson Rosellas are found in Northern Queensland, all the way down the East Coast of Australia and across to South Australia They generally inhabit areas where there are eucalypt forests. They form small flocks
comprising of half a dozen to about twenty birds. The birds grow to 32-36 cms in length. They eat eucalypt seeds, grasses, shrubs, insects, fruit and they love olives. Crimson Rosellas make a nest in the hollow of a tree. The female generally lays 4-8 eggs. Unlike the wicked Fairy Wren, Rosellas are monogamous, and during the breeding season, adult birds will not congregate in groups, and will only forage with their mate. A pair of Rosellas will tend to nest in the same tree hollow year after year. That’s lovely. By Jennifer Carr

THE Boroughcoutas Masters Swimming Club and Hotondo Homes joined forces to raise money in the campaign to prevent Malaria.
THE Boroughcoutas Masters Swimming Club and Hotondo Homes have joined forces to raise money for the World Swim Against Malaria Foundation which provides mosquito nets for people in malaria ridden countries. The joint venture has so far raised enough money to buy 121 mosquito nets which will be distributed to African countries affected by malaria. “The mosquito net is the easiest and most effective way to prevent malaria and it’s amazing the difference it can make to a child’s wellbeing,’’ Allie Barker of Hotondo Homes
Ocean Grove said. “As a member of the Boroughcoutas Masters Swimming Club I thought it was a good opportunity to get Hotondo Homes involved to help raise money for the cause.” “On the day we swam 21km” Malaria kills at least 1.5 million people every year with 70 per cent of deaths being children under five. The World Swim Against Malaria is an initiative of the Against Malaria Foundation (AMF) and was launched in 2005 with more than 250,000 people around the world swimming to raise enough money to buy
270,000 long lasting insecticidal nets. The nets were distributed to 540,000 children to protect them from being bitten by insects when they sleep at night. The Boroughcoutas held their fundraising swim at the Geelong College pool at the end of June. The Boroughcoutas Masters Swimming Club is an adult swimming club that swims on Sunday mornings at the College Recreation Centre and Tuesday nights at the Bellarine Aquatic Centre. For details about World Swim Against Malaria or to make a donation visit the website www.worldswimagainstmalaria.com.

Ocean Grove take to the high jump.
Surfside in the running.
MORE than 160 Surfside Primary School students competed at their athletics sports day at Landy Field last Thursday. In trying conditions students competed in Shot Put, Discus, High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, 80metre hurdles and the 100metres, 200metres, 800metre running events. Surfside Primary School Business Manager Robyn Frew said students had a lot of fun and competed to the best of their ability despite the cold weather. She said the best performing students would now have the opportunity to participate in a representative team later this month. “Children were competing so that the school could select a representative team to compete at the District event to be held on Wednesday August 18,” Ms Frew said.
OCEAN Grove Primary School students braved the winter elements at their annual Athletics Sports day late last month. Pupils from Grade three to Grade six participated in field and track events including Shot Put, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Discus and the 100metres and 200metres running events at South Geelong’s Landy Field. Ocean Grove Primary
Primary sports days at Landy Field School Principal Darryl Diment said the day was not interrupted by inclement weather despite passing showers hovering on the morning of Friday July 30. “We were very lucky with the weather,” Mr Diment said. “Before we got to Landy Field in the morning it was raining.” Mr Diment said while only four grades participated in the
sports carnival it was a huge logistical exercise to get students to Landy Field in South Geelong back to Ocean Grove. “We organised three buses on the day, so it was a busy day for everyone,” he said. “Landy Field has great facilities so it was a pleasure to be involved.” Ocean Grove Primary School currently has more than 450 students.

Well done Elliot – 60 runs is a tremendous effort. Finally, well done to the group of parents who took part in the parents cross
country run in Geelong on the last competition day. This fun event gives the mums and dads (and grandparents) the chance to run the track with a bit of encouragement from the kids. Ocean Grove club was once again a club to be reckoned with in this event with 3 parents picking up trophies! The organisers would like to thank all the
children who competed in this year’s cross country season. They are now looking forward to their summer season of Little Athletics which will commence later in the year. For more information on the Ocean Grove/ Barwon Heads Little Athletics Club please visit their website – www. ogbhlac.org.au

‘Doggy’ scoops surf trip
Celebrations in order for Daniel ‘Doggy’ Smith after drawing a surf holiday in the 13th Beach Boardriders mid-year raffle. Pictures: GARY STEPHENS
Mums and groms at 13th Beach Boardriders’ mid year raffle event.
Check us out first for the best value plants around!
THE 13th Beach Boardriders are a hardy crew and it takes more than freezing temperatures, howling wind and driving wind to keep them away from great waves. There were no exceptions when the mid winter celebration took place the other Saturday night, when an all expenses paid surfari sponsored by PNG surfaris on board the PNG Explorer amongst other great prizes was up for grabs. With the nights’ theme being 70’s and 80’s Retro Apres Ski gear, the crew were rugged up against the elements and all very keen to win the boat trip on offer in the monster raffle. The unluckiest man on the night would have to go to Dave Crapp! With
his number pulled out of the barrel first, “Crocket” would have won most raffles. Unfortunately for him, this was a reverse raffle, he didn’t leave empty handed though, and lucky Crocket got his money back. With spot prizes from Tonik, The Greenroom and Strapper to keep the punters happy throughout the night and tunes from DJ Fraze it was a load of fun and everybody had a hoot! With three numbers left in the barrel it was down to Ben Collier, Steve Arklay and Daniel Smith still with a chance to win a surf trip of a life time. Steve was first to go and won an O’Neil Psycho wetsuit from Tonik, next out was Ben who went home with a new Rip Curl E-Bomb wetsuit from Rip Curl, leaving
THE Ocean Grove Cricket Club launches its pre-season program on Sunday. The first session starts at 10am on August 15 at the Ocean Grove Cricket Club. The Grubbers plan to have 13 training sessions prior to the start of the 2010/11 season. In the lead up to Round 1, new Ocean Grove Cricket Club coach Lucas Cameron says the club will run two sessions a week on Sundays and Wednesday evenings at 5:30pm. Cameron is also hopeful of running some indoors sessions prior to October. “The emphasis will be more fitness sessions on Wednesday nights in the lead up to the season and we will be doing some boxing and running as well,” Cameron said. “Once the proper season starts we’ll be reverting back to Tuesday and Thursday training sessions.” For details on the Grubbers pre-season training program contact Club president Lucas Baulch on 0423 965 016.
Surf club OCEAN Grove Surf Life Saving Club held its Annual General Meeting late last month. 2009/10 Ocean Grove SLSC President Peter Rankin will continue to occupy the role for the upcoming season. Meantime, Chris Paterson replaces David Pavia as Vice-President, as Pavia becomes Treasurer while Fontaine Portelli is the new Club Captain – Life Saving Operations Manager. Portelli takes over from Matthew Burke, who won the prestigious Victorian Lifesaver of the year award last month. Jo Vincent will be club secretary for the second year.

D1s find form In men’s senior soccer division 1 Surfside Waves are finding their form and pushing for a finals place in a closely contested league. Despite some indifferent results the Waves are in fourth spot, with only a few points separating the top six teams in the league. In their latest home match the Waves turned on the form with a 7-0 thrashing of struggling North Geelong with two goals each for Sid Smith and Nick Hargreaves and goals from Stan Nangle, Steve McGain and Tod Mexted. It was a special day for coach Nick Hargreaves as he notched up his 100th league goal for the Waves. In their latest match the Waves played away to league leaders Rangers and put in a really strong performance, in a physical encounter, coming away with a

share of the points in a 2-2 draw, with Nick Hargreaves scoring both goals. With only three league games left it is sure to be an exciting run in to the campaign as the Waves battle to ensure their place in the finals.

Table-topping Waves run riot in local derby
Darcy makes the final cut
Surfside Waves women have continued their amazing year with an 8-0 win over neighbours Barwon Heads at the Shell Road soccer pitches. On a heavy ground on Saturday afternoon Waves quickly demonstrated why they sit at the top of the table. Heads did show glimpses of good football and threatened the Waves goal sporadically through the game but were unable to find the break they needed to inspire confidence. Ultimately Waves set the pace with accurate one touch football in the midfield and clinical strikes up front. Waves have three remaining games of the home and aways. The next home game is on against Deakin on August 21. Kick off is 3pm.
Waves Darcy Rapa.
Waves press forward.
Waves controlled the midfield and made the most of chances.
OCEAN Grove youngster Darcy Rapa is making a rapid rise up through the Soccer ranks, writes Mark Heenan. Last week, the 13-year-old found out he made the final cut of 16 to join the Under 14 Victorian team. The St Joseph’s College student will now head to Coffs Harbour for the FFA (Football Federation Association) Under 14 Boys National Youth Championships later next month. “I found out (over a week ago), I got an email saying I was in the team,” Darcy said. “I was involved with the trials and then I went to a training camp in Bendigo.” Darcy is the son of Surfside Waves President Mark Rapa. Mark said the Victorian talent scouts then have the arduous task of narrowing the final squad down to 16 players within a three month period. “The talent scouts pick the pool and they end up with 30 players that they have identified over an eleven-week journey,” Mark said. Darcy who plays in the left back position, is one of five male players to have made the Under 14 Victorian Squad in the wider Geelong region. Young Darcy joins local Ocean Grove female compatriots Renee Zebic and Clare Duck to have made a Victorian representative squad in 2010. All three players are products of the Surfside Waves Soccer Club. Outside of Soccer, Darcy, a member of the Barwon Sports Academy, is a keen fisherman.

cobras
Action from Cobras under 10s derby.,
Club thanks its sponsors IT was great to see a big turn out for the annual Cobras Sponsors Day. It’s the Cobras chance to say a massive “thank you” to those fantastic contributors which keep this proud and mighty club ticking along year after year. The program was chock a block with four Cobras matches, an Auskick match and a mouth watering luncheon and refreshments organised by the delightful Elaine Pearson and her merry troup of helpers. Fantastic job they did too
Under 10 Orange Round 12 vs Queenscliff The boys played their best game for the year against Queenscliff combining well from the start and playing some great footy. Shepherds, blocks and tackling were fantastic as Cobras opened up an early lead as Tom Ness and Noa Northam got us of to a flying start. The second quarter was fantastic with Joshua Lange repelling attack after attack in a standout performance at half back. His hard at it attitude and penetrating left foot had us attacking for most of the quarter. Jace Franken cashed in a couple of times with running goals from great teamwork where sheperding was a highlight. Ezra Cuthill scooped the ball up on the half forward flank and a slick handball to Harry Dixon-Jennings saw Harry slot it from the
with delicious meals from John”The Chicken Shop”Bowman served out to packed tables in the beautiful newly renovated clubrooms. Counsellor Jan Farrell (who has family ties to the first ever Cobras Division 1 premiership side) and clubroom builder Graham Birchell were both on hand to help celebrate this wonderful club resource. It was great to see many of the sponsors through out the day watching the wonderful display put on by the
angle. Great goal! The second half was a tough affair with the Cobras attack on the ball and their opponent keeping things very tight. Tyler Bryan and Nathan Scarpa were playing some great defensive footy not giving the opposition any room. Queenscliff came within a kick in the last quarter before James Gillians ran onto the ball and kicked the sealer. Great game by all the boys. Cobras 6.8.44 Queenscliff 4.6.30 Under 10 Orange Round 13 vs Barwon Heads Barwon Heads Gulls came over the bridge and showed the Cobras what early morning footy is all about. If you wake up at half time 7 goals behind it’s all over. After being second to the ball in the first half, an inspiring speech at half time by the coach had the Cobras back
on their game. Again Johua Lange burrowed in and got the hard ball. Max Sedlins was playing well along with Jai Thomas as the boys went in hard and worked as a team. Mitch Taylor was providing a focal point up forward and kicked a couple of goals as the team lifted. The last quarter was a continuation of the third as Harry Tregenza showed how to get the hard ball. A great improvement in the second half as Cobras outscored the Gulls. Cobras 2.4.16 Gulls 9.8.62 Under 10 Orange Round 14 vs Leopold Green Up against Leopold Green under lights on Friday night and again the Cobras started slowly. The boys were going in hard but Leopold were playing well. Noa Northam was having an outstanding game as he drove the ball out of the backline finding team mates upfield. Daniel Foster was stepping up and showing plenty as Leopold piled on the pressure. Harry Dixon-
junior footballers. Fantastic also to see Cam and many of the senior footballers from Ocean Grove down supporting the juniors, the Cobras were feeling quite the super stars seeing these blokes watching on! So a massive THANK YOU from the President and Committee to all of our sponsors throughout the season and a big thanks also to those who helped make a wonderful day. Cobras Football Club
Jennings was fighting hard at full back and James Gillians providing run from the back pocket. The scoreboard didn’t reflect how close the game was at half time. The third quarter started to go the Cobras way as Jace Franken got into the game and drove the ball into attack. Rory Monteith started to run and bounce and snapped one from the pocket to get the Cobras going. Noa kept playing well and Ben Bennett was his usual courageous best. Harry Tregenza was getting plenty of it as Cobras outscored Leopold in the second half. A fantastic team effort in this performance against the undefeated Green showed how far the mighty Cobras Orange have come. Cobras 1-1-7 Leopold Green 7.2.44 Under 12 Orange Round 14 vs Leopold Green On a great night for footy, under the big lights of the Leopold ground the Cobras Orange side took on the might of the Leopold Lions. Having
played them before, the team knew they were up against it but under the leadership of Jesse Sherwell and big Blake Schwartz the boys were more than ready for this massive ask. Sam Beasley made his long awaited return to footy after a smashed cheekbone and had lost none of his skill or run. Lachlan Taylor has made the second half of the season his own and dominated with some awesome foot skills and team play as did speedster Peter Attard. The Cobras, particularly Daniel Spence, tackled and chased hard all night like there was no tomorrow and even the opposition coach mentioned he’d not come across a more committed side this season. It was great to see Craig “magoo” Goodger’s ferocious tackling taking down players twice his size which aided big gun forward Blake “schwarter” Schwartz to help himself to a couple of majors thank you very much! Jack (iron man) Tregenza capped off the evening

The local showdown between 2 of the 3 Under 12 Cobras’ sides and it couldn’t have been scripted any better. An arm wrestle all day but played with fantastic spirit as a “mate against mate” contest. A big crowd at the snakepit witnessed some great disciplined footy in very windy conditions. Hard tackling and team play dominated and captains Peter Attard and Lachlan Gawley Price led by example all day. Lachlan Smith, Zane Leist and Declan Bradley delighted the crowd with their constant run out of
defence time and time again. Connor Harvey just doesn’t know how to give in and big Joel Ness laid tackles that created turn overs over and over again. Tom (The Bolt) Smith got a late call up and boy did he make the most of that! He ran and hassled tirelessly as did Lachie Gawley Price. Great to see one of the hardest workers in the team - Lachlan Madden get amongst the goals. Both teams were winners in this one. a piece. The 2nd quarter saw the cobras with a 3 goal lead, thanks to Darby McEvoy setting up many forward attacks from half fwd, with clever ball use and delivery. Fletcher Sharrock dominated the ruck in the 3rd and Ronan Healy had a blinder, providing clearances from the centre, increasing the Cobras lead by 9 goals. Byron Taylor played his usual great game of footy kicking 3 goals and showing his strength at every contest. With a strong charge and a last quarter win from Queenscliff, kicking 5 goals to the Cobras 2, reduced the Cobras to a 39 point victory. The Cobras stellar form continued against Anglesea with a convincing win in perfect weather at Ervin Reserve. The boys hard running from defence, tackling pressure and fantastic team work saw the game as good as over at the long break, leading 9 goals to 1. To Anglesea’s credit, they tried hard in the third term kicking the first 3 goals only to see the Cobras bounce back hard and control the game to the final siren. After an uplifting rev up by coach Simon Hollmer, the team turned it on in
the 2nd half starting with the defenders shutting the gate on every Grovedale attack. Then the rebounding into an open and running forward line allowed Ryan Symonds, James Butteriss and Brad Gist to go on a goal spree. The last quarter being the best tally so far, kicking 9.2 which kept the home crowd in rapturous applause, another great team effort, go Cobras. The work rate of the team was great and for most of the game there was only a few points separating the sides. This was the best four quarter effort by the Cobras for the season so far. Jack Ness, Jake Taylor, Andy Douglass and Nick Murphy were impregnable in defence. Christian West won a lot of the ball in the midfield and used it well to our advantage. Brayden Warren was a strong avenue to goal and brought many others into the game if he wasn’t in a position to mark the ball. Cobras Under 14 (1) Round 15 vs Winchelsea We travelled down the highway to play on the huge but rain sodden Winchelsea ground and came home convincing winners 13 9 87 to 2 1 13. THE netball girls had a very successful day on Saturday against Queenscliff with 9 wins, a draw and one loss. Great work girls! Next weekend will be the last home and away game. It looks as though 5 of our junior sides will be in the finals so get behind each other, train hard and success will hopefully be yours. Remember that all finals will be played at Drysdale. Semi finals are on Sunday- August 22nd and 29th and the Grand Final on Sunday 5th September. Let’s get behind our girls and support them over the final series. Alice Teague-Neeld Congratulations to Alice TeagueNeeld who has been selected for the Australian Under 16 netball team after a stunning performance at the School Sport Australia 15 & Under Championships last week. Alice was part of the Victorian team who made the Grand Final but was beaten by Queensland 44 to 30 in Queensland last Friday. Alice shot 26 of Victoria’s 30 goals and was also the Victorian recipient of the Amy Safe Award (a best & fairest equivalent). This is a wonderful achievement by an outstanding young netballer. Alice will represent Australia at a May tournament in New Zealand next year. Alice shone in her senior debut last weekend, playing B grade
against Portarlington. Alice shot an outstanding 31 out of 57 and was named in the best. Dalton back on
Favourite drink? Victoria Bitter (VB) out of a can. Favourite ideal position on the ground? Wing. Facebook or Twitter? Facebook. Favourite holiday destination? Put Bali in, but Corio or Norlane would run second. Most inspiring player at Ocean Grove? Travis Gavin. If you were stuck on Desert Island what one item would you like to bring? I would like to bring former Ocean Grove player Matt Stammers with me because I can eat him, everybody at the club will know what I am talking about.
COURAGEOUS Ocean Grove captain James Dalton has made a sparkling and timely return to BFL senior football, writes Mark Heenan. The 31-year-old returned against Portarlington in Round 16 after suffering a fractured skull immediately following the Grubbers’ win over Modewarre in Round 11. Dalton hit his head during a fall on Saturday June 19. The veteran ball magnet who wore a helmet, during his side’s 60-point demolition over Portarlington on July 31 kicked four goals and collected 18 disposals. Dalton, who acted as the team runner while he was sidelined, played three quarters in the
sometimes spiteful encounter at Portarlington Recreation Reserve. The 2009 Grubbers’ best and fairest winner was thrilled to back playing after missing the four BFL games prior to Round 16. “It was good fun – it was great to be back,” Dalton told the Ocean Grove Voice. “I did cop a nice whack and spent the last quarter on the pine. “The expectation was to get through the game unscathed which happened.” The Grubbers skipper said ferocious pair Tyson Doherty and Tim Baker and buzzing utility Dave Gray have all emerged as genuine leaders at
the club in his absence. “No doubt they’ve all stood up in the last couple of games,” he said. He said the extended lay off gave him time to reflect on how much playing local football meant to him. “In the middle of winter when I wasn’t out on the field you take for granted not playing even playing in the country football leagues,” Dalton said. Dalton, a winner of the prestigious BFL Les Ash Medal award, will ease his way back into the midfield with more game time in the coming weeks according to Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor. And he added: “His importance to our club is huge,”

All on Spring Creek SATURDAY August 14 looms as D-Day for the Ocean Grove Football Club if they want a piece of the 2010 Bellarine Football League finals. The Grubbers (10-7) face fourth-placed Torquay (11-6) at Spring Creek Reserve in the final home and away season fixture that will decide Ocean Grove’s finals’ fate. The winner of the Round 18 Tigers v Grubbers clash will cement a BFL finals berth after Ocean Grove 8.10.58 suffered a 19-point loss to Queenscliff 10.17.77 on Saturday in their final home game of 2010. Anglesea (10-7), in sixth position, can make finals and although it lost to Geelong Amateur on Sunday, the Kangaroos head into Saturday’s match against the winless Newcomb Power as hot favourites. Bear in mind both Torquay (122.44%) and Ocean Grove (121.53%) have a more superior percentage than Anglesea (92.17%). Second-placed Coutas dominated the Grubbers from the outset, although the margin flattered the home team in the end as Ocean Grove kept Queenscliff goalless in the last term. A clearly frustrated Ocean Grove coach Cameron Mc-
Gregor said while Queenscliff thoroughly deserved their win, he admitted his team only played one decent quarter and were lucky to only lose by 19 points. The home side trailed by 44 points at three-quarter time before the Grubbers kicked four unanswered goals in the final quarter. “They (Queenscliff) had opportunities to blow us away in the first half and they kicked a lot of points,” an honest McGregor said after the match. “Some of it was the pressure we put on them, some of it was inaccurate kicking from their forwards. “At three quarter-time we were seven goals down and threw caution into the wind and got within three goals. “We have beaten them once this year and they have beaten us once this year and our worse loss to them has been by 19 points (today) and we played ordinary football. “Queenscliff had winners all across the ground today.” The Coutas, who kicked the first three goals, gained the initial ascendancy in the opening quarter and looked the far better

equipped team in the wet and slippery conditions. Dangerous Queenscliff midfielder Roscoe Holmes won numerous centre clearances, while Daniel Measures and Cameron Burnside both played strong games. Queenscliff coach Heath Jamieson said the emphasis in pre-game planning was to win contested ball on the back of the Grubbers nail-biting two-point win against the Coutas in Round eight. “The last time we played Ocean Grove they smashed us with contested footy and smashed us in the middle of the ground – so that was a real focus for us to get on top in that area,” Jamieson said. The visitors took advantage of the Grubbers limited ruck stocks, Coutas’ seasoned big man Joshua Evans had a field day and dominated the stoppages. The under-size quartet of Tom McManus, Shaun Maloney, Wayde Piec and permanent defender Sam Van Deuren shared ruck duties after Grubber makeshift ruckman Ben Wilkinson missed the match with concussion. “Yes we need a ruckman, we don’t have a (seasoned) ruckman, they don’t grow on trees we can’t pull someone in this time of year,” McGregor said. “The
guys that had a crack at the ruck had a go and they weren’t embarrassed.” Jamieson said Evans’ dominance in the ruck went a long way to ensuring his side’s victory. “One thing Ocean Grove is struggling with is a key ruckman and I think Josh Evans showed his worth today,” Jamieson said. “They (Ocean Grove) are not in the finals yet – The Grubbers are playing for their lives so we knew they were going to come out and have a fair go.” McGregor said everything will go on the line for Saturday’s cut-throat encounter against the Tigers. Tall defender Harrison Foott and Ben Wilkinson, who both missed Saturday’s match with injury, remain in the mix for selection. “It comes down to us versus Torquay this week,” he said. “The conditions suited the Tigers body shapes last time we played, they had some guys in the midfield that were stronger and they were harder over the ball than us.” Torquay who defeated Ocean Grove by 21 points in Round nine, caused the upset in Round 17 defeating ladder leaders Drysdale in a one point thriller. Game starts at 2:10pm at Spring Creek Reserve in Torquay on Saturday.

Strong performance from 18s and Reserves YOUNGSTER Patrick West kicked four goals in Ocean Grove’s 64-point win over Queenscliff in the BFL Buckley’s Reserves grade, writes Mark Heenan. Final scores were Ocean Grove 13.14.92 defeating Queenscliff 4.4.28. Midfielder Cameron Marchbank continued his good form with another strong showing in the seconds, while bigger body players Oliver Holland and Roscoe Portelli also played serviceable games. The Grubber seconds, who remain in third
position, will be pushing for another victory and the chance to secure the prized double chance against second-placed Torquay this Saturday. Meanwhile in the Under 18’s the Grubbers 16.11.107 defeated Queenscliff 4.7.31 by 76 points. Kaiden Long, Patrick Maloney and Todd Rodgers all kicked four goals apiece in the impressive win. The other pleasing sign from the win was second-placed Ocean Grove wrapped a top three spot.
