Bridge will restart in weeks Bridge works have been on hold during the summer shutdown. Locals and vistors can expect to see more progress from February onwards. Currently the most visible works is a temporary platform that will assist the construction of the new bridge.

WORK on reconstructing a new Barwon Heads Bridge is due to restart again at the end of this month. Construction on the first phase of the project – building a working platform – has been halted for safety reasons over the summer holiday period. Work to reconstructing the iconic bridge was controversially started earlier last year and is being done in three stages.
This involves rebuilding the existing road bridge as well as building a new, safer pedestrian bridge. According to VicRoads, the reconstructed road bridge will feature the heritage character of the existing landmark while making sure it meets the necessary safety and load bearing requirements to be able to continue carrying traffic. The pedestrian bridge will be built 10 metres downstream and will improve safety for

pedestrians, cyclists and anglers. VicRoads reports that work has “progressing well”, with permanent and temporary works being carried out to plan. A number of structures are now under construction that will be used to build the new bridge. The most visible new structure is the temporary works platform located between the existing bridge and the new downstream pedestrian
bridge. This is providing a working platform from which the two permanent bridges can be built. The platform is nearly complete and is expected to be finished early this year. While the second stage of the main road bridge is being built early this year, the downstream pedestrian bridge will carry Barwon Heads bound traffic. More details are available from the VicRoads website.
Pole sparks brigade call
Implementation of this curfew has now commenced and we will assist cat owners with advice and information. All registered cat owners will receive a letter and brochure outlining the cat curfew requirements next week. This is a key recommendation from the City’s Domestic Animal Management Plan, developed in consultation with residents. Keeping a cat indoors at night helps protect it from cat fights, disease and car accidents. It also helps protect local wildlife. Contrary to popular belief, cats don’t have to roam. In fact, cats kept indoors at night generally live at least three times longer than cats allowed to roam. Cats must also be refrained from roaming uninvited onto other people’s properties during the day. This will avoid situations where cats sometimes destroy plants, attack birds, damage items, defecate in gardens, fight with other cats and create other nuisance situations.

OCEAN Grove firefighters were first on the scene when a passerby reported a power pole was ‘sparking and arcing’ electricity at the junctions of Presidents Avenue and Park Lane shopping strip. Crews cordoned off the area on Friday morning until Powercor arrived to deal with the pole. Often the power poles can catch fire when dust, salt and wind combine.
quick news Fire danger AS the Voice went to press a Code Red fire warning was issued for the first time in our region this week. We will endeavour to update our website and make additional reports if needed. Key information is available at www.oceangrovecfa. com.au or through K-Rock, ABC radio or SKY news TV stations.
Mozzies down CITY Mayor John Mtchell says recent mosquito surveys suggest numbers are “significantly down” compared to this last time year. He said light trap readings are made on a fortnightly basis at Ocean Grove and other Bellarine locations show that numbers of adult mosquitoes are measurably less than last year and this is despite a much greater rainfall in the lead up to summer. The City uses a combination of aerial application and ground level treatment to control mosquitoes in the common breeding sites around the Bellarine Peninsula. The mosquito control products used in aerial spraying are larvicides called Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) and s-Methoprene. “These products only affect mosquito larvae,” Cr Mitchell said. “Humans, animals, and the general environment will not be adversely affected by the aerial treatments.” He said that the aim of the City’s mosquito management program was to reduce mosquito numbers to moderate levels, as it was not feasible to eliminate all airborne mosquitoes. Cr Mitchell said it was important for residents to be mindful when collecting water for reuse, to check for larvae, keep gutters clean, and empty or cover buckets of water.

Spooked Spider back beside her STAFFY cross Spider is safely home after scaring the life out of his owner Megan Tibaldi. As with many rescue dogs, Spider came with ‘issues’. Issues like loud noises, being left behind and probably stranger danger are pretty typical. Add to that Megan and Spider had only recently relocated to Ocean Grove from rural Queensland. So he was still acclimatising to the Grove’s new sounds. But Megan had to take off at Christmas and five-year-old Spider was being cared for by friends for a few days. “One of our friends came around to feed the pets on Boxing Day while we were away in Queensland for Christmas,” said Megan. However, as Megan explained: “Spider got excited and accidentally got let out of the yard.” Megan contacted the Voice to help locate her pet who is registered and microchipped. “Your help would be much appreciated, as we are very worried about him,” she wrote. We were all set to put out an appeal and then Megan contacted us again, this time to say
Spider, safely home with Megan.
he’d been found. “He actually got hit by a car on Shell Rd and then kept running! “We were very worried because he was missing for so long. We got a call on New Year’s Eve day from some people on Shell Road and he had been in their yard hiding the entire time! “They were finally able to read his tags because he came out to swim in
their wading pool.” To add to Megan’s stress her plane back was delayed and then the storm and fireworks spooked Spider again and he ran away again before they got home. In the end Spider was found – again hiding. “Luckily a man over on Montague Way found him inside his car in the morning! “He is still acclimatising
to the urban noises. For example, the sound of people splashing in their pools scares him. He doesn’t usually run away when we’re home, but he’s a lot more insecure when we’re not there. “Yes we are very relieved. He’s a crazy boy.” Send us your doggie tales: news@ oceangrovevoice.com

Mark Ginn, Leigh Norquay, Chris Pitfield and Des Every are helping organse Collendina Cricket Club’s 20 year celebrations.
MORE than 600 senior and junior players have pulled on the whites for Collendina Cricket Club in its first 20 years. Stat’s man Des Every ensures every run, catch, wicket and wide is logged in for records sake. Des and the club’s organisers have been pouring over the clubs achievements and characters as they prepare to celebrate their second decade with a reunion and family day later this month. It’s fitting that the club celebrated its most successful last year, with the A grade making the grand finals, B and D making finals, under 15s were champions and the under 17s made finals. A grade also currently top their ladder at the Christmas break. A previous great year was 92-93
when C grade won a grand final and B made it that far. Although they’re unlikely to get all 600 back for a catch up they’re hopeful they can muster a few old faces as they toast the growing success of ‘the other’ Ocean Grove cricket club. “It was originally founded by footy umpires who want to get together for the off season,” explained Chris Pitfield, one of the few remaining players from the club’s first ever game. That was a Bellarine B grade game against Newcomb. Unfortunately they lost that opening encounter but the club went on to win three of its first season games. Also in that original side was past president and club stalwart
Leigh Norquay and current surf lifesaving club president Peter Rankin. Other names of the day were Michael Kotiw, Andrew Haines, Jamie Cook, Mark Nolan, Terry Carter, Brad Lake, George Everett, Brad Wirth and Sam Mirable. It was Leigh Norquay and Michael Kotiw who are credited with founding the club and the clubrooms bear testimony to former’s tireless role. The club took on the name Cobras, which could have been Cougars, later on, at the suggestion of John Roberts. Roberts was an avid Carlton supporter who played in the early years and was behind the push for the blue and white colours. The key to the club’s success, all agreed, is the development of junior talent. By far the majority of it’s A graders have come through the junior ranks. Among them was Kade Norquay. Currently the A grade skipper, Kade played in the very first junior game, an under 12 fixture against neighbours Ocean Grove in 1991. That side also included brothers Dave, James and Luke Farrell, Carly Norquay, Chaya Kotiw, Sam Malady, John Broderick, Todd Downey, Joel White, Adam Crabtree, Justin White and Ben
Cashman. Several players have also gone on to play for Geelong, including Michael Fabris, Luke Buckland, Kade Norquay and currently Corey Walter. For the record the player with the highest total senior runs is current president Mark Ginn with 3,344, while Kade Norquay has amassed 3,733 with his junior career combined. Daniel Worn has taken the most wickets, currently 252, and still playing. The 20th anniversary celebrations will be held at the newly extended and renovated clubrooms in Minerva Close from 6pm on Saturday January 30. Finger food will be supplied with drinks at bar prices. During the day the club’s B grade side will be playing Angelsea so there’s a chance to catch up early on and cheer one of the current sides. A family day will also be held on the following Sunday 31 from 10am. The club will be putting on a 20/20 match between current players during the day. There will also be plenty of children’s activities including a jumping castle and Milo cricket. Lunch will include a spit roast, rsvp Mark Ginn at mark. ginn@hotmail.com for catering purposes.

Junction gets worse every year Dear Editor Almost everyone has a view on the intersections of Presidents Ave and The Parade/The Terrace, mostly that it is nightmarish (re: Voice December 30). It is the worst designed traffic hub in Geelong, with the exception of the Malop St/ Gheringhap St disaster, and is getting worse every year. Vision to the right when turning out of The Parade from the carparks into Presidents is non-existent due mainly to the parked vehicles outside the new Target shopping complex. The congestion around this area is busy at most times of the year, but in holiday periods it is a frenetic. Not only is it dangerous for drivers, it is also a nightmare for pedestrians and cyclists. The passage of traffic around the entire area bounded by Presidents, The Terrace, needs to be re-designed to create a safer circuit for all users. I would suggest that all three parallel streets: The Terrace, The Parade and The Avenue between Presidents and Hodgson St should all be one way. This section of The Avenue is impassable for two cars most of the time due to parked cars, and should travel in the same direction as The Terrace. The traffic in
Parade traffic has recently been stationary backed up from Hodgson Street up to the Presidents Avenue junction.
and out of the carparks off The Parade is chaotic, with it being impossible to exit the carparks along this road without backing across two lanes of traffic. It should be one way in the opposite direction. Roundabouts at the Presidents and The Terrace/The Parade intersections would slow down traffic at this busy thoroughfare and keep traffic flowing out of the carparks. Now we just need the Council to fund it!!! If it is like anything in Grove that will be a long time
coming. P.S. Maybe it’s about time the local community organised some family entertainment down at the beach for New Years Eve, instead of allowing it to become a teenage hang out. Jo-Anne Britt Ocean Grove
Accident waiting to happen Dear Editor Hi - I do not have any first hand knowledge
of the bad road spot in Presidents Ave and Parade and Avenue, however, have had a few near misses on the following bad intersection. Travelling along Madeley Street from Field Street North Road, the first roundabout at Presidents intersection is a ‘crash waiting to happen’. It is impossible to see if vehicles are coming from the right due to very high trees close on road way plus usually a car parks on the nature strip right on the corner. Traffic travelling on Presidents
from the shopping centre usually fast and do not slow down therefore are on the roundabout before you have time to get over the intersection. Accidents waiting to happen...... Shauna Young Ocean Grove Send us your top ten traffic hazzards in Ocean Grove. Do we have more junctions that compare with Geelong’s controvertial Malop Street set up? day in the life - tony featherston
Content by the Sea
Tony Featherston is general manager at Cottage by the Sea in Queenscliff, as well as living in Ocean Grove.
I HAVE been living in Ocean Grove for just six months now, having moved here from Grovedale where I spent the past nine years. I came here via extended stretches as a YMCA manager and recreation officer who lived among the cane-cutting cussers of Bundaberg, Queensland, and the hard-living folk of Alice Springs and Central Australia. l was primarily running YMCA centre’s and setting up recreation programs there. After 12 years of helping to establish and support a number of YMCA’s in Queensland, my wife Anita thought l might be a good fit for the Cottage and its burgeoning needs when the manager’s position was advertised in 2001, the rest is history as they say. I was born in Terang and spent the first 9 years of my life on a property near Mortlake which is in the Western Districts of Victoria. My first school was Darlington Primary School. I recall wining the grade 2 ‘most improved’ award. Not a terribly prestigious award considering there were only 3 kids in my year level. The whole school only had 26 kids and we were all in the one room with the same teacher. When we moved to Geelong l finished my primary years at St Margaret’s in East Geelong then attended East Technical College. My first memories of Ocean Grove are as a teenager, hitch hiking with my mates to Raffs beach we’re we learnt how to surf. We would often camp on the foreshore in the hope of catching an early morning
wave. If I wasn’t living here, I would probably still be living in Geelong and travelling down to Ocean Grove and 13th beach at every available opportunity. I’m General Manager of Cottage by the Sea, a not for profit children’s charity located in Queenscliff. We provide holidays for children in a fabulous environment. These children are from disadvantaged backgrounds and this ‘first time’ holiday is often the first time many have seen the ocean. I believe this region is the perfect location for one of Victoria’s great unsung institutions: the Cottage by the Sea. Cottage by the Sea, a two-storey building on a rise above the undulating Flinders Street that connects it to Queenscliff, it was built in 1890 at the behest of two women, a Miss Calder, of Melbourne, and Mrs G.H. Hitchcock, of Geelong, who adopted a Down Under version of a Ministering Children’s League founded by the Countess of Meath at her home, ‘Otter Shaw’, in Surrey, England. Cottage by the Sea, Queenscliff Inc. (which kept the League name until 1998) opened on December 7, 1895, to provide care and accommodation for children recovering from illness. The original timber building, just 300 metres from the waters of the bay, rotted and was replaced in 1938 by the present solid brick building rendered inside and out on a 1.2-hectare block from which a track runs through bush and tea-tree to the beach. Commandeered by the Defence
Department during World War II and used to accommodate the Red Cross, the cottage after the war took on the broader function of “providing short-term relief care in a holiday environment for children in need”. At the Cottage the children are the VIP’s, we aim to give them a fresh outlook on life, they see and experience so many good things that the value of the holiday and respite for the children, and their parents, is beyond any known measure. The cost of not providing it is perhaps to be seen in manifestations of vagrancy, vandalism, and behaviours that lead to court, and worse. As l work for a local charity most of my attention is given to ensuring its ongoing survival. As this requires over 1.5 million dollars a year and receives no government funding my time is ‘pretty much’ devoted to its cause. The great thing is that my role connects me with many Ocean Grove clubs, businesses and associations because so many support charities like Cottage by the Sea. When l have more free time in later years l hope to be able to contribute more directly to the Ocean Grove community. Usually I’m up around 6.30am, on occasion will head down for a surf, then breakfast and off to work. My duties are very varied, they range from managing the day to day operations of a busy children’s charity to raising public awareness about the services we provide, to seeking support to help raise the funds needed to continue the great
work that the Board, staff and volunteers provide. After work l’ll usually go for a walk along the river or beach or bike ride with my wife. I have always had a love of surfing and have recently taken up paddle boarding which l am enjoying. And of course there is the only AFL team worth being passionate about - the mighty Geelong Football Club. It’s always a challenge to get enough spare time for my passions. I tend to work a normal day but we have many fund raising events and speaking engagements at night and on weekends. Like most people in this busy world it would be great to have a little more time for recreation but l think that makes me appreciate what time l do have even more. As a newcomer to the Grove l am happy with the direction the town seems to be taking. It is growing while still maintaining its country feel. The best things are its locality. Unrivalled beaches, the river, lake and the old trees all make for a wonderful environment. If there is anything missing in Ocean Grove, l’m yet to discover it. Murfs Surf Shop is my favourite local shop because he has some great gear there and like so many Ocean Grove businesses, he’s a keen supporter of community and charity work. With the increasing population Ocean Grove is going to have to ensure that infrastructure is in place to provide new residents with adequate schooling, safe roads, parks and medical facilities. This could be challenging for local government. If I was mayor for a day, I’d push to get some more roundabouts around the town, starting with one at the bottom of Eggleston and another at Presidents – you can get stuck there for ages this time of year! I may be a little naïve but l would like to see the Terrace relatively unchanged, although parking may worsen unless alternative options can be found. If I could open a business in Ocean Grove, it would offer tours of the Ocean Grove area along with tickets for cruising trips along the river. My favourite part of Ocean Grove is my home. Apart from that it’s the proximity to some of the best beaches you will find anywhere in Australia. Why go away for a holiday when the perfect holiday destination is at your door step.

Jazzing it up Ballet, Jazz & Contemporary Beginner to Advanced RAD ballet syllabus NEW 3yr & 4yr Dance Play classes YOU’VE had country, you’ve had metal and you’ve had delta blues and … Now the Chicken Shop is bringing jazz to the Grove, in the form of the Anton Delecca Quartet. The Quartet established themselves in 2001, performing regularly at Bennetts Lane Jazz Club in Melbourne and at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, resulting in the release of their debut album Flow. In 2008 after working on separate projects the Quartet re-formed with the highly esteemed rhythm section of pianist Marc Hannaford, bassist Jonathan Zion (acoustic bass) and drummer Daniel Farrugia. Anton Delecca and Daniel Farrugia are both key members of internationally renowned band The Bamboos, and over the past few years have fulfilled extensive performing, touring and recording commitments with that group. Both are also featured on the soundtrack
for the Nintendo Wii game ‘De Blob’, the first version receiving critical acclaim worldwide, with the second installment coming soon. In the last year Delecca has debuted a UK version of the Quartet in London at the cult jazz night Jazzlive @ The Crypt and performed regularly with both the Cam McAllister Sextet and the Daniel Gassin Sextet. He has also recorded several albums with various groups including ‘Pazit’ with the Australian Jewish Music Ensemble. He has performed with Odean Pope (Max Roach Quartet), Arthur Blythe (World Saxophone Quartet), LA trumpet maestro Wayne Bergeron (‘The Incredibles’ soundtrack), NYC Latin Soul singer Joe Bataan, New Orleans piano legend Eddie Bo, UK vocalist Alice Russell and UK producer Will Holland’s Quantic Soul Orchestra. And has also studied in New York City with master saxophonists Dave
Liebman, George Garzone and Chris Potter. The Anton Delecca Quartet are playing at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop on Friday January 22 as part of a new program that will feature more jazz musicians. Entry is $10.

Above: Marisa Quigley aka Chubby Rae, right Suspicious Aloysius, and below Jill Meehan will all be playing at the Ocean Grove Summer Festival in the Terrace on Sunday January 17. Admission is free.
LAST year Ocean Grove was dancing in the streets to the poguish Go Set. This year they’ll be getting down to rockin’ blues and downtown funky sounds. Headlining the festival is Chubby Rae & The Elevators – a band that is bent on vibed-up, good-time blues – and they follow on from soul brothers Geoff Achison and Suspicious Aloysius. Marisa Quigley, aka Chubby Rae, the 6’2” redheaded soulful powerhouse, sings the blues like there’s no tomorrow, delivering a fantastic voice and fabulous stage presence. The Elevators are dedicated blues men, with Jim Dyson, the “Boss of the Boogaloo” on guitar and slide and Karl Inderberg and Craig Chiller holding it all together on drums and bass, Chubby Rae & the Elevators dig deep into blues traditions to lay down grooves that even a corpse could move to. Ain’t that what the blues is for? Chubby Rae & the Elevators
have released two award winning albums; their second and selfpenned “She Gets Unruly” winning both Album of the Year and Female vocalist of the Year at The Australian Blues Music Festival CHAIN awards in 2007. As well as playing their regular gigs in and around Geelong and Melbourne, Chubby Rae & the Elevators have been wowing audiences with their uplifting and infectious shows at music festivals all over Australia. Seven-piece funk outfit Suspicious Aloysius started out in 2007 playing around the Warrnambool area to a healthy following of funk loving party going supporters. However these days the band spreads itself far and wide with members calling Jan Juc, Nullawarre, Port Fairy and Melbourne home. Comprising of a driving rythym section, howling horn section, powerful keys, guitar and vocals, the band brings the stage alive
with songs from artists and bands such as, Parliament, Freak Power, Stevie Wonder, The Commodores, Curtus Mayfield, Wizards of Ooze, Galactic, James Brown, Ohio Players, Tower of Power, Sly and the Family Stone, and Kool and the Gang. Suspicious Aloysius are Michael Murphy on Vocals/Guitar, Dave Lodge on Keyboards, Matt Story on Trumpet, Shelly Ryan on Tenor Sax, Dave Corrin on Bass, Chris Hedges on Drums and Dennis Stevenson on Trombone and Trumpet. Born in Malmsbury in central Victoria, Geoff Achison discovered Eric Clapton at age nineteen, and his life has never been the same. He moved to Melbourne in the late 1980s to pursue his dream of playing the blues. Geoff formed a friendship with Bob Sedergreen during this period and played for a while with Bob Sedergreen’s Bluesbusters. He then put his experience to use by forming the band Just
Blues, which gigged around Melbourne for two years, and eventually gained the choice support gig for Roy Buchanan. In 1989, Geoff met Dutch Tilders, and shortly thereafter joined Dutch in his band, the Blues Club. He stayed with that band for five years, until, in 1994, he left to concentrate on his own career. He is now considered by many to be one of the finest guitarists in Australia. Geoff has received numerous awards worldwide, including the 1993 Beale Street Blues Society Talent Contest (First Prize), 1994 Australian Blues Performer of the Year (Runner Up), and was the recipient of the Albert King Award at the 1995 U.S. International Blues Competition. He is also the first guitarist from outside the US to receive an endorsement from Gibson Guitars. Also on this strong bill are local blues favourites Sambrose Automobile and Jill Meehan. The events of the day will run as

Grover returns with worldly sound and vision A FRAGRANT mixture of chilled beats and evocative grooves, One World Music recording artist Amanaska aka Simon Lewis will be performing tracks from his highly lauded release ‘Circles’ every Thursday this month. Live visuals created by Amanaska will be projected around the venue and synchronised with the music, and help tell the story of the world adventures that led to the creation of ‘Circles’. Simon has recently returned to his hometown of Ocean Grove to live after several years away and world tours that included performances in North America, all around northern Europe and finishing up at the famous Notting Hill Carnival in London. ‘Circles’ has received widespread critical praise for its consummate melding of world and electronic influences. Tracks from ‘Circles’ can be found on many compilations released around the world including ‘Buddha Bar Vol 9’. ‘Circles’ is a cultural feast of eclectic music for lovers of world fusion. Simon has created a global musical masterpiece that was recorded in the UK, USA, India and Melbourne. This mid to down-tempo
album is a richly layered musical experience that blends organic sounds and electronica, with worldly and spiritual influences. A supreme mix of female and male vocals and ethnic harmonies with beautiful string arrangements, the album features earthy percussive elements and moody hypnotic rhythms and beats to get your head nodding. This lushly produced collection of tracks transports the listener through everything from chilled beats, to vibrant grooves and encapsulates a mood of sophistication and innovation that sets a new benchmark in the global fusion genre. Put simply, ‘Circles’ takes the listener on a journey that leaves an indelible musical impression. Simon was a student at Ocean Grove primary from prep to grade 6 then the old Queenscliff High School to year 12. This will be his first show in the area showcasing his work as Amanaska and coincides with his decision to settle back in his home town with his family after extensive travels. He will also be recording new tracks for a future album. Tranquility Base, Grubb Road – near Amaze ‘N’ Games. Cover charge $10 at the door show starts 7.30pm

FAIR shoppers thronged Ocean Grove Park last week to enjoy its annual alternative market, exhibits and live music. The Ocean Grove Tranquillity Fair has now be running for 13 years and it’s getting stronger and stronger. Always held in early January the success of each event can be at the behest of Mother Nature. This year organisers say an overcast and mild day prove to be one of the best. Too hot and the crowds hit the beach, too cold and windy
and they’ll go elsewhere. Not this year where the crowds were just as content to mill around the park’s largest ever market or sit and watch one of the headline live bands. Among those performing was Collard Greens and Gravy, the Little Stevies and the Junes. The event is the major fund raiser for maintenance and improvements at Ocean Grove Park.

$4 MILLION RENOVATION AND

‘Club Grove’ will commence building Ocean Grove’s newest hospitality destination venue in March. At a cost of $4 million the fully refurbished and extended Club will include a 180 seat Brassiere, Café/Coffee Shop, 100 seat Sports Bar, 180 seat Function Centre, Extensive Bars and a new fully catered Members Lounge with seating for 180 members. The redevelopment of one of Victoria’s leading and multi award winning Clubs will see ‘Club Grove’ transform into one of the finest and most diverse hospitality venues in Australia. The Club aims to be the benchmark in design and quality fit-out with a focus on customer service excellence and the provision of great products. A key part of the Club’s redevelopment is a very “real” focus on food and beverage which in part will enable the Club to reposition itself to expand into three new markets: events and functions; families; and the corporate trade. The venue will target conferences, weddings, special occasions, meetings, exhibitions and offer entertainment including new talent and dinner shows. This exciting project is designed to attract new patrons and keep existing members coming back. The Club will continue to trade throughout the renovation and extension period and has invited 4 builders to tender for the project which will be completed late 2010 in time for the festive season. Function bookings will be taken well in advance of this date to allow the Club to be fully booked when the doors open.

CFA ‘s window on weather
Ocean Grove CFA’s fully functional weather station is positioned halfway up the hose tower at the Shell Road fire station.

WITH prevailing weather conditions now playing an increasing role in determining bushfire risk, better knowledge of the relationship between temperature, humidity and wind direction is more ammunition for Ocean Grove fire fighters as we enter the risky season. A group of local brigade volunteers has taken it upon themselves to grab the technological advantage. Since moving into their new fire station in Shell Road a year and a half ago, the brigade has gone about setting up its own weather station halfway up their lofty hose tower. Over time they’ve developed a good record of trends in heat, cold, rain, humidity and wind direction. Now though they’ve taken a step further and have also made it available to the public through the brigade’s own website. This new free facility went live just before Christmas and gives the public the most accurate live weather reporting available for the town. Linking the weather station and the brigade’s website is a software program that has been
funded to the tune of $500 by the local Rotary club. Captain Bob Smith admits to being a convert to its uses and now believes it is a “fantastic” facility for the brigade. Among the champions behind the project was brigade member Andrew Cooper. The IT guru who also looks after the website has helped install the software to get it up and running. Andrew explained that most of this has been pretty trouble free, apart that is, from nontechnological issues. Issues such as as galahs and cockatiels eating the weather station have been a problem. The initial station had to be replaced thanks to the damage caused. A cage may have to be installed if the birds continue to target the plastic equipment. Ocean Grove CFA will also be posting the new Fire Danger Ratings (FDRs) on the site. Victoria has adopted the new nationally agreed Fire Danger Rating scale to help communities understand information about fire danger. For more information go to www.oceangrovecfa.com. au.
Brigade Captain Bob Smith and their own IT guru Andrew Smith explain how the weather station works.
Details are fed wireslessly from the hose tower weather station to a consule and this is then communicated and interpreted by software on one of the brigade’s computers..

ONE of the pleasures of living in Ocean Grove is dining at ‘The Dunes’ especially if you are lucky enough to secure a window seat! The view of the beach and the waves is spectacular. If my friends meet me for coffee they know that
they have to sit outside on the chairs near the scrubby bushes, so that I can take photos of the birds playing in the bushes! Very exciting for me, not so great if the weather is cold! Birds I have seen around ‘The Dunes Café’ include
Pacific Gulls, Terns, Silver Gulls, Sparrows, Ravens. Magpies, Willie Wagtails, Fairy Wrens, Silvereye, various species of Honeyeaters, Turtle Doves and Thornbills. Wishing everyone a very happy new year Jennifer Carr
The strategy outlines existing and developing projects, policies and plans to build a regional marine and coastal biodiversity asset base that will help to identify priority areas. Copies of the strategy are available at: www. ccma.vic.gov.au or

BARWON COAST Barwon Coast, your local Ocean Grove & Barwon Heads coastal foreshore manager, and operator of the Barwon Heads Caravan Park, the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove and the Riverside Camping Ground welcomes our visitors to the coast for their summer holidays. Play it safe by the water Always swim between the flags at our locally patrolled beaches - Ocean Grove and 13th Beach where Life Savers & Lifeguards will be on patrol. Take note of the Beach Safety Signs at beach access pathways Additionally lifeguards are for the second year patrolling the beach to the east of RAAF’s (18W) on the Ocean Grove Spit and we are pleased to provide the funding for this essential service. Free Shuttle Bus Leave your car at home or your caravan park and catch the free shuttle bus co-ordinated by Barwon Coast with financial support from Coles, City of Greater Geelong, the Echo, Press Here and the local business associations. The free bus is operating until 25th January commencing at 10am thru to 6pm with an hourly lap of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and the beaches. Dog Free Beaches Please remember that over the peak summer, the dog free beaches declaration come into effect with dogs prohibited along the entire Ocean Grove Beach (west of 13W Hodgson St), and the Barwon River beach from 18th December to 31st January From 13W (Hodgson St) east towards Collendina dogs are permitted under effective control (not as previously reported – on a leash). Effective control is when your dog is in your sight and can be controlled by voice command. Please remember to “pick up after your dog” so that other users of beaches are not inconvenienced. Use the “Scoop the Poop” bags provided by Barwon Coast. New Years Eve We trust you enjoyed the fireworks display from the Barwon Heads Bluff on New Year’s Eve. Barwon Coast is pleased to put on this display each year to enable visitors and locals alike welcome in the New Year. We thank the Barwon Heads Golf Club, the Wynndean Holiday Resort, the Barwon Heads Tourism & Traders Association and the Ocean Grove Business Association for their ongoing support of this event.
Riverside Camping Ground Ocean Grove As you travel between Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads in peak summer you would have noticed the large number of campers that suddenly appear on the river side of the sand spit. This is the Riverside Camping Ground that we operate for 6 weeks a year as an unpowered camping opportunity with over 200 sites. Those who have lived in the region for a number of years may well remember that camping was also allowed on the Ocean side of the Spit but this was stopped to enable the fragile coastal vegetation to recover. With decisions having been made as to the location of the replacement Barwon Heads bridge and Barwon Water resolving where the new sewer main will cross the sand spit and the Barwon River, we are now able to undertake a full review of the area and have engaged consultants to prepare a draft Landscape Management Plan. The key matters being addressed in the Landscape Masterplan include the retention of the six week camping season on the riverside of the road and reviewing the existing provision of amenity blocks with the potential reduction in numbers, more strategically located and more environmentally sustainable. We are also investigating the best linkage from the existing Barwon Estuary walk in Ocean Grove thru to the Barwon Heads bridge – this being a project under the banner of the Barwon River Parklands . The Landscape Plan will also address the need to provide appropriate access to 18W where Barwon Coast is funding Life Guards over summer, ensuring a patrolled beach adjacent to the camping ground. A draft of the Landscape Plan is available for review by campers and others over summer with comments to Barwon Coast c/- Post Office Barwon Heads 3227 by the end of February 2010. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager

A HEADWIND and soft sand greeted more than 1700 runners that lined up at Point Lonsdale facing Ocean Grove on January 3. For those taking part it was probably preferable to the searing heat that had coloured previous races. But nonetheless it was a consistently hard 10km that was interspersed with dodging the shorebreak. The reward came at the final stage turnaround, with the wind assisting and the sun shining, runners were eased over the line. This year’s mens 10km classic was again won by Point Lonsdales David McNeil while Ocean Grove’s Sandra Prosenica took the women’s run. Grove’s Ian Walker appropriately won the 10km walk. As well as the long run there was also a 5km run, a 10km walk from Point Lonsdale and the annual Ripper Nipper run. Surf Lifesaving Club president Peter Rankin said the event had again proven itself a massive asset to the town.
“It was brilliant, excellent. It was a record number of entries, up again on last year. “All in all it was a pretty good race. Last year was probably a perfect day to race. This year there was a head wind and the sand was a lot softer. “I think regardless of the fact that I am the president of the (Surf Lifesaving) club, the publicity that it brings to Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club and Ocean Grove as a community is fantastic. It’s iconic and it’s incredible that it has been run by a voluntary organisation for 30 years. “It’s the people’s race. We always like to have a few at that level (elite) taking part as it helps publicise the event. But it is the people’s race. “The winner (David) is a really nice fellow and the girl that won it has been altitude training at Falls Gap and came back especially to run. “They do it because they want to support the surf lifesaving club and Ocean Grove, not because there is any money to be won in it.”

The Wallington Road House
FAST, RELIABLE AND
EFFICIENT SERVICE PTY. LTD.
Commercial Printers ESTABLISHED SINCE 1977
HIGH QUALITY PRINTING INCLUDING:
Elkhorn Road House owners Terri Bitton and Julie Taylor.
THE Elkhorn Roadhouse is the creation of Terri Bitton and Julie Taylor. The concept was developed after a road trip through the USA mid 2008. Along with a great desire to be creative and self employed they decided to give up their demanding roles of sales and security opting to have a life style change for something a little more rewarding. Once the ideal location was found on Wallington Road, the real work began and the Elkhorn Roadhouse was born. The Roadhouse is a cafe offering a high level of house
made quality food, quick eats or lingering breakfast and lunches. Show casing as much local and regional produce that is seasonally available. The garden has been set up to allow fresh produce to be harvested by the chef as required which will grow and develop. The Store also offers a small range of gourmet produce and gift ware along with general items as milk, bread and news papers. The surroundings create a relaxed country setting for the Roadhouse, providing a unique meeting place for friends and
families and our canine friends are also welcome. Terri and Julie have been operating as a strong team now for four weeks with the talents of the Roadhouse Chef Nathan Veach and his wife Kate Veach, along with two casual employees. “In the past weeks we have experienced an overwhelmingly positive response and thank the local community who have shown great support, encouragement and return patronage,” said Terri. Plans for the future include releasing their own range of gourmet produce,
hosting cooking classes and demonstrations, supper club dinner parties, obtaining a liquor licence and offering local wines with meals. “Our goal is to create a destination point for visitors and locals to bring business to the area,” said Terri. When not at the Roadhouse they love spending time with family and friends and sharing good food. Elkhorn Roadhouse is open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch. Keep an eye out for news and updates on the web site www.elkhornroadhouse.com.au.

grove surfing
Surf’s up for all
IT may have been the flattest day for months but there was still enough push to get surfers up and riding at the January Disabled Surfing Event Day. About 80 volunteers turned out to enjoy the surf with another 30 participants when the event was held on Saturday morning. As is usual with Ocean Grove DSA events the temperature soared over 30 degrees but at least the wind was cooler than previous days. The Disabled Surfers Association is all
about surfers helping surfers – or people who have always wanted to surf and had never previously had the chance. Working in groups the trained volunteers encourage and ensure the participants are safe. The next DSA Victoria event will be at Ocean Grove Main Beach on Saturday February 27 from 9.30am. For more information contact Mark on 0431 601760 or Julia on 0413 925970 or Danny on 0403 163188.

Club bowled over by interest MORE than 130 people enjoyed a fun night of barefoot bowls at Club Grove last Wednesday. Unfortunately, approximately 50 others who wanted to join in couldn’t because all the greens were full. In only the second programmed
event, organisers were shocked to see so many come through the gates. On the first night only 45 turned up but that was probably due to temperature being 36 degrees. Barefoot Bowls is on every

Tough start for Cobras SUCCESS for ladder leading Collendina As will now rest on their bowling firepower and fielding skills if they are to counter a determined Coutas outfit. A mid order collapse on the first day of their encountter spoiled what promised to be a good day. Captain Kade Norquay was back and ramped up a solid 30 while Ewan Handley (28) held in there for the longest innings. Queenscliff are chasing 139 and are so far on 38 for 1. In other grades, Collendina B is chasing Queenscliff ’s 187 amd are so far at 80 for none, the Cs have defeated the same side with a hefty 259 for 7 to 207 all out, thanks to a tidy 82 from Eddie Ellwood and 36 each from Ben Evans and Brett Pearson (n/o). The D1s also earnt a victory away at Barrabool, 203 for 7 to 132 all out. Mark Fletcher hit 57 for this one. The D2s weren’t so fortunate falling to a Newcomb side 310 to 146, depsite the best efforts of Matthew Stammers on 48.

and Grubbers As ...but Bs firing
Zac Henderson steers one around.
AN Ocean Grove side keen to build on winning the last game of 09 will do well to keep a grip on their fixture with Barrabool after a laboured innings on Saturday. With the first two batsmen dismissed for 10 between them it was left to Corey Bampfield (36) and Adam Spiby (28) to rescue this game. The scores now rest at the Bulls with 1 for 22 chasing Grubbers 124 total. The Bs on the other hand were on fire. Peter Hart smashed 60 as they cruised
to 320 for nine on their first day. Other notable scores came from John Breen (39), Troy Wiseman (39), Nathan Ervin (38) and Marcus Wirth (36). C grade fell to Barrabool 170 to 176, despite a healthy 61 from Craig D’Arcy. The D1s defeated Anglesea 155/5 to 127/9, with Shaun Fankhauser’s 29 helping them there but the D2s succumbed to Wallington 117 to 112. John Bjornenak hit 42 for Grubbers in that tie at the Wallabies.
