WALLINGTON’S Van Loons Nursery has scooped the best large garden centre in the state prize for the third year running. Now they go on to defend their national title. Story page 3.

OCEAN Grove population numbers are due to swell again over summer with local accommodation operators reporting close to full occupancy. Owner of Getaway Rental Barwon Heads & Ocean Grove, Marisa Colman, said her 45 rental properties are close to booked out for the busy December/January period. “Our bookings are doing really well with 40 to 45 properties full,” she said. “The numbers are certainly well up from last year, almost 25 per cent up in terms of last year’s numbers.” Marisa said renters are taking the properties for all different lengths of time with a minimum of a week. “Over summer we don’t take bookings for less than seven days but three

weeks is about the longest we have,” she said. Bob Jordan, general manager for Barwon Coast, which runs three camping areas in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads including the Riverview Caravan Park in Ocean Grove, said they have 100 per cent occupancy for 2011/12. “We’ve been 100 per cent for about a month. cancellation but the next phone call is someone wanting to fill that space,” he said. Mr Jordan said they are busy every summer and this year is no different to previous years in terms of bookings. “This is a typical summer, we expect to be 100 per cent for the full four weeks,” he said. “Some people will stay for a week, others will

bring their caravans down for the full month, we have the full spread of campers.” Usually from within a 200 kilometre radius from Ocean Grove, Mr Jordan said most holidaymakers come from around Victoria. “Our market is generally within 200 kilometres from here, we take people from Melbourne, Continued page 2.

Garden gets sign off Cllr Jan Farrell and Neighbourhood Centre co-ordinator Nicki Dunne with members of the Ocean Grove Community Garden at the signing of the lease for land on the Parade.

THE Ocean Grove Community Garden has been given the keys to its new home. Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre manager, Nicki Dunne signed the lease on behalf of the committee on December 2 while Geelong City Councillor Jan Farrell handed over the keys to the property at 108 The Parade. The Ocean Grove Community Garden will be located on The

Parade behind the Ocean Grove Senior Citizens building and will be open to members throughout the community. Chairman of the community garden committee, Peter Gumley said not only have they received the keys to the garden site, but their application for a government funding grant is well underway. “This is a great day and also a great week for us as we were informed

yesterday that our application for grant funds from a Victorian Government source has passed to the second stage of process,” he said. “Our committee has worked hard since March this year and we are now seeing the fruits of our efforts.” Information on how to get involved in the community garden can be found at ogcommunitygarden.tumblr.com.

Dogs on leashes reminder LOCAL pet owners are being reminded to think about which beaches they can walk their dogs this summer. A range of seasonal changes to local dog leash requirements for the summer period are about to come into effect on December 18. Bob Jordan from Barwon

Coast said he wanted to remind dog owners that until January 31, dogs are prohibited from the beach, west of 13W at Hodgson Street and up through Ocean Grove Main Beach. “Appropriate dog management on beaches from December 18 says dogs are prohibited from Main Beach all the way

around to the Barwon River estuary,” he said. “From 13W east, dogs are allowed on the beach and off the leash but they must be under effective control which means they must respond to their owner’s commands.” From February 1 dogs are allowed back on Ocean Grove Main Beach as long

as they’re on a leash. Bob said the restrictions are extremely important over the six week summer holiday period. “It’s essential to ensure everybody can enjoy the beach and avoid inappropriate actions by dogs towards other people,” he said.

Bendigo, Ballarat and all the way down to Colac,” he said. With the increased numbers expected in Ocean Grove over the next two months, Bellarine Police will be increasing their officer numbers to step up the number of patrols taking place around town. Senior Sergeant Pat Whelan from the Bellarine Police Station would not reveal the exact figures but said there will be an increased police presence around Ocean Grove over summer. “I can’t tell you exact numbers but additional police will be put on from all over the place,” he said. “We will increase patrols targeting the beaches, shopping area and the roads - especially the roads.” One of Ocean Grove’s busiest nights of the year, New Years Eve, will also see extra officers patrolling the town and the Main Beach foreshore which in recent years has been popular with revellers. “There will be even more coming down, with substantial numbers on New Year’s targeting public places; officers will be out early patrolling the beach area,” Snr Sgt Whelan said.

CFA call outs OCEAN Grove CFA were called out five times in the last fortnight. Two of those were to Ocean Grove addresses, smoke in a Dolphin Court back yard and an alarm activated at Seaview Manor, while the others were to support minor incidents or false alarms in Curlewis and Queenscliff.

Van Loons win three in a row WALLINGTON’S Van Loon’s Nursery has made it three state titles in the row after picking up the Best Large Garden Centre in Victoria award in Melbourne last week. On Thursday, owners Heidi Martin, Matthew and Loretta Hart and most of the staff attended the Nursery and Garden Industry of Victoria awards night held at Crown. “We had some other great nurseries up against us and being in such company is wonderful in itself,” said Loretta. “Victoria really WINNERS: Tori Dickinson, Matthew Hart, is lucky to be serviced by such a vibrant horticulture industry.” Danielle Loader and Sandra Duyvestyn.

Winning the Best Large Garden Centre in Victoria for 2012 means Van Loons will represent Victoria in the national awards to be announced in March. Van Loons has also won this the last two years running so to get the hat trick nationally would be the icing on the cake. “We wanted to take the staff so they could be part of the celebrations if we won but also to recognise what a great three years we have had,” said Loretta. “Our staff are fantastic and they are the ones that make our place the award winning nursery that it is.”

Bob Jordan received the award from sponsor Bob Gartland.

The Ocean Grove-based Disabled Surfers Association received praise for its work at the recent Alcoa Access Awards.

BARWON Coast’s Ocean Grove Main Beach Amenity Block was recognised for its design features incorporating “access for all” amenities.

Year in review Another year has nearly come to an end with 2011 on the edge of dissolving into 2012. In the next edition of the Voice, we will be taking you back over the year that was to reminisce about the highlights and occasional lowlights Ocean Grove life has experienced over the last 12 months. To make sure we cover the most important aspects of 2011, let us know your favourite memory from the past year. Maybe it has been Ocean Grove’s overwhelming enthusiasm for fundraising, our first ever MS Mega Swim, or possibly you’ve enjoyed Voice on Holiday every fortnight to see where locals have been off to throughout the year. Women in business BELLARINE Business Women last week held their end of year celebration and as part of the night, raised money for local charity, ASK. With 37 donations from local business women, the group held a silent auction and raised $2697. A Barwon Heads based charity, ASK evolved from three local women wanting to help others battling with the unfortunate illness of breast cancer. They aim to provide financial support for research and families struggling with the costs of supporting the treatment of this illness. One of the creators of ASK, Alecia Elbelli, said: “We’re so thankful for everyone’s support and looking forward to all the Bellarine Business Women sharing our journey and seeing firsthand how them helping ASK is helping local women.”

Fee fear for fit classes OCEAN Grove fitness operators will soon be charged up to $12,500 to run their fitness sessions on public land. With a range of outdoor fitness classes being held around Ocean Grove, new fees from the State Government’s Department of Sustainability and Environment handed down on July 1, 2011, will see rising costs in fitness programs over the coming years. The license framework for tour operators and recreation providers who use Crown land will be charged an annual fee of $110 plus $1.10 per person, per session, capped at $5500, over the 2011/12 and 2012/13 period. These fees rise in the 2013/14 period to a possible $255 annual fee and $2.40 per person, per session capped at $12,500. The new fee structure will be run by local councils, however, the City of Greater Geelong General Manager Projects, Recreation and Central Geelong, Dean Frost, said they are not yet collecting any money for use of public space.

“We are not currently charging any fitness trainers to use Councilmanaged land,” he said. Mr Frost said they are working with the appropriate bodies involved to develop a roll-out plan for the fee structure. “We want to encourage people to get out and exercise so we’re working closely with Fitness Australia to get an industry perspective,” he said. “We’re also in discussions with the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) about a transition period to the new system.” Local outdoor fitness instructor John O’Halloran from 12W Fitness said he thinks the new licensing structure idea is fair for people who use public space to run a business. “I think it’s a reasonable regulation so there’s a finite number on a location so there’s no extreme number in one area,” he said. “The annual fee itself is reasonable and confirms that there are professionals running classes who have public indemnity insurance.”

John, who runs regular fitness sessions on the Ocean Grove foreshore and beach said he was unaware of the per head charges but was unsure on how it could be policed by fee collectors. “Any given session, you don’t know how many people you’ll get so you could never predict your numbers, I don’t see it as viable to work on an honesty system like that,” he said. John that the current fees he and other outdoor fitness instructors must pay are for personal indemnity insurance as well as general equipment wear and tear costs and concedes the hike in individual charges will mean an increase in class fees. “The main effect on classes is that fees will go up but I think class fees should be reasonable to encourage people to exercise, you don’t want them to become disenchanted,” he said. The Ocean Grove Park plays host to weekly outdoor classes but because it is land that holds a private title and is neither council run or classified as Crown Land they will not

be subject to the fees. Colin Atkins from the Ocean Grove Park committee said they charge fitness operators a small fee to run their sessions to help towards the upkeep of the grounds. “We charge a small fee for keeping the park maintained for them as well as require copies of their public liability insurance and get them to accept responsibility for their occupancy,” he said. Mark Rapa who owns the Ocean View Health Club also runs outdoor fitness sessions and said he believes the annual fee is a fair way to balance out the competition between businesses. “These people are my competition and they’re not paying the same overheads as I am for the gym space, but at the same time I run boot-camps so it’s fair to pay to use the foreshore,” he said. Mark agrees with John though when it comes to the individual fees per class. “Charging per person per session, I’d want to know how they are going to police it,” he said.

Shell Road Reserve As the Member for Bellarine, I am pleased to see that stage one of construction work on the Shell Road Reserve will begin in 2012. I have been a passionate supporter of this project to upgrade the Shell Road Reserve. In 2010, the former state government made a commitment to fund $5 million for the sporting precinct if reelected. It is great that the Federal Government’s grant along with funding from the City of Greater Geelong will see stage one of the project start. I will continue to push for state government funding to support the continuation of this very important project which supports the recreational needs of the growing community of Ocean Grove and builds on the funding provided to build the Bellarine Aquatic

Centre. Seniors’ strength programs It was good to be able to call in recently to Ocean Grove to talk about the Living Longer Living Stronger program that Bellarine Health run for local seniors. This is a highly valued program providing health and fitness benefits to many older residents. Unfortunately the current state government has let the funding lapse and so far have not committed to funding for the future. Bellarine Health and the Council on the Ageing are keeping the program going in the meantime because it is so important for many seniors, estimated at up to 1,000 in the Bellarine and Geelong region. The program provides strength training and general fitness, and helps with arthritis, osteoporosis and other

Been a busy time for me with this warm weather, skink chasing, pool wading, beach cruising and strutting the streets of Ocean Grove. I’ve made some great friends over the last week, a labradoodle, jack russel, a pom and I saw the biggest dog I have ever seen at the beach. It was like a pomeranian on steroids. It was so big I could ride it around town like a horse. Keep sending in your pictures and stories, with thousands of tourists about to hit town it’s great to show them our friendly pets faces.

chronic diseases, as well as keeping seniors active and connected to their community. I will continue to work hard to make sure that the State Government provides the funding needed to guarantee the future of this significant program. Christmas greetings To all Ocean Grove Voice readers, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of myself and my son Sam to wish you and your family a very happy Christmas and New Year. I look forward to working for you as your representative in State Parliament in 2012. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact my office if there are any issues I may be able to assist you with. Merry Christmas The Ocean Grove Business Association wishes everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Business Association members enjoyed the annual Christmas Dinner at The Dunes Restaurant on Thursday, 1st December 2011. There were 25 people at the dinner, with music provided by entertainer Paul Carrigg. Pre dinner drinks and a delicious meal were enjoyed by members of the Business Association and guests. We would like to sincerely Michele Mitten from The Voice and Shelley Keast from Beachside Blooms The Terrace for their help in making the evening successful. More on this page 27.

Christmas decorations

Have residents and visitors noticed all the red Christmas flags around town and on the township fringe? The Ocean Grove Business Association encourages local residents and visitors to the area to support traders who have shown the Christmas spirit.

New toilet block And how about the new toilet block located in Park Lane….. have you checked it out yet?? Our thanks go the City of Greater Geelong and members of OGBA for their persistence in having the old block demolished and a new amenity provided. The car parking has now been returned to maximum usage.

Congratulations, Home Hardware

The Business Association congratulates Paul Drake (immediate past president) and his staff on their latest Home Hardware award. This is Paul’s first award as principal owner of the store, but only one of many received over the years. Congratulations to you all!

Lock up your vehicles

I got an email from ‘Eeek’ who is a white mouse. Eeek said, ‘ Hi Cheeky, I’m a fellow cat hater. I’m a mouse who lives in a house and thinks cheese is grouse and I am single, without a spouse.’ Ermmm … thanks for that poem Eeek.

Don’t forget the dogs on the beach rules change soon, keep an eye on the signs around the coast. Hey, that guy on Bay FM in the afternoons sounds familiar, wish he would play ‘Who Let The Dogs Out..’ Cheeky and out.

Ocean Grove Business Association, in conjunction with Victoria Police and Neighbourhood Watch, urge all residents, visitors and shoppers to securely lock their vehicles at this time of year. No matter where you park, there are lots of thieves around Ocean Grove and other parts of the Bellarine just waiting to take advantage of unlocked cars, particularly if people leave attractive goods on display such as mobile phones, lap tops, wallets and keys.

Next Meeting:

ALL traders in the Ocean Grove area are invited to the next meeting of the Ocean Grove Business Association on Thursday 2nd February 2012, at 6pm, at Bellarine Furniture 7-9 Marine Parade, in the Industrial Estate of Ocean Grove. Please contact the OGBA secretary Lin Bell, on 0403 221 737 or 5251 5899 if you will be attending the meeting. Isn’t it great to do business in Ocean Grove?

Barwon Heads Bridge to be called... A GASP and sigh of relief greeted the unveiling of the new Barwon Heads road and William Buckley pedestrian bridges on Sunday. A crowd from both sides of the river made the pilgrimage to the ceremony which was - after all that has gone before it - a fairly laid back afair. Ahead of the unveiling MC Mark Hyland gave a little background to the completion of the bridge and included a minute’s silence to Adrian Freeman and Robert Twomey, two

Irish construction workers who died in a car accident on the way from working on the bridge. Irish Dancers all performed in their honour. The names of the bridges were selected through a competition. Heather Egberts was selected from a number who suggested the Barwon Heads Bridge, while Sam Elliott put forward the name William Buckley Bridge. Primary school students Charles Symons and Holly Wood-Burgess unveiled the signs on the bridges.

Santa’s early arrival

IN THE SPIRIT: Marian Coppins, Gordon King, Kerrie Ricchini and Jim Ricchini, are ready for the January 1 market at Kingston Park.

Market going international LOCALS and holidaymakers are being encouraged to pull out their colourful costumes and dress up for the first Rotary Ocean Grove Community Market for 2012. Market organiser Jim Ricchini, said they wanted to entice people to the January 1 market who might otherwise be nursing a sore head on New Years Day. “People can dress in fancy dress or international costume and all the stall

holders will be taking part, it should be a lot of fun” he said. “We want to encourage locals after their hangovers to come in costume or maybe they’ll still be in costume from the night before.” Jim said they will be awarding prizes on the day for the top stallholder costume and will be on the lookout for the best costumes in the crowd. The Ocean Grove Market usually ends at 2pm but Jim said they will

play it by ear for the end time on the day. “We’ll be extending the hours for people who might not get down earlier, it’s no use if everyone gets out of bed at one o’clock, if there’s still people coming in at two, we’ll keep going,” he said. The Rotary Ocean Grove Community Market will be held at Kingston Park on Sunday January 1 from 9.30am until at least 2pm.

TO the delight of locals, Santa Claus made a surprise visit at December’s Rotary Ocean Grove Community Market. The jolly man himself made the rounds of the market in style, riding in a 1960 MGA sports car with local resident, Peter McLennan, a far cry from the usual sleigh. Santa said his sleigh was in for a major service before its big trip on Christmas Eve so he made the trip down under on a QANTAS A380.

WALLINGTON WITH one of the smallest grade six year levels on the Bellarine Peninsula, Wallington Primary School’s 21 students will attend a wide range of secondary schools across the Geelong region. Will Townson, Ryan

Symonds, Emma Kleindienst and Emily Moroney will all go their separate ways next year however they maintain modern technology will keep them connected along with after school activities. As a smaller school, the Wallington students have

become family which means next year’s transition to schools of over 1000 students will be a big one for some. “In this school you know everyone’s name, you can walk down the hall and there’s no one you don’t know,” said Ryan.

“There are more year sevens in (Geelong College) than the whole school here,” added Will. The common answer when asked about what they’re excited about next year is the chance to meet new people and experience

here twice over the years,” Leah said. The group discussed what they were looking forward to the most next year with all of them agreeing new subjects are a big draw card. “I can’t wait for all the new subjects we get to do like science, humanities and

sports programs, I get to do a triathlon in term one ” said Lachie who’s already gearing towards a career in sports medicine. The students are now looking forward to their celebration day at Adventure Park and their graduation ceremony.

SURFSIDE SURFSIDE Primary School’s School Captains are an example of the division of the students to different schools in Geelong and the Bellarine. Brody Franken, Leah Bruckner, Lachie GawleyPrice and Carly Sanders will be attending Bellarine

Secondary, Kardinia International and Christian Colleges. Only six students in the year level will be attending schools other than Bellarine but Carly and Brody both agreed the proximity of the school to home has a big appeal. “It was my choice to go to

Grade 6s head for high school Local grade six students are winding down the end of their primary school years before taking next year’s big leap into secondary school. Seven years of making friends and having the same teacher all year long will now make way for multiple classes in

one day, having to learn the names of new teachers and classmates and for many, tackling the bus system. While the majority of Ocean Grove and Wallington’s grade six students will stay local at Bellarine Secondary College, there are a spread of students

heading into Geelong, Drysdale and other secondary schools throughout the region. In the midst of all the end of year celebrations, activities and graduation ceremonies, grade six representatives from Our Lady Star of the Sea, Ocean Grove, Surfside

and Wallington Primary Schools took some time out to reminisce and discuss what 2012 holds for them. With some trepidation but a lot of excitement, the class of 2011 look towards the beginning of their high school years.

OUR LADY STAR OF SEA ALL 53 students at Our Lady Star of the Sea will be attending either Saint Ignatius, Sacred Heart or St Joseph’s College next year. In the lead up to the last day of the year, Jack Tregenza and Brooklyn Sacchetta have

been reminiscing about their very first day of primary school in 2005. “On my first day of school I remember I drew a picture of myself in my school uniform,” said Jack who then wondered aloud whether he

should draw one on the first day of year seven to match. “I have been thinking about it and I remember asking my grade six buddy what the class roll was because I didn’t know,” said Brooklyn. The two discussed

their favourite parts of their primary school days including excursions, sporting competitions and leadership experiences. “Having prep buddies in grade six were fun this year,” Brooklyn said.

They are now looking forward to all the new experiences secondary school will give them, right down to the last detail. “We have to wear ties and blazers at Joeys, it will be pretty different,” said Jack.

his long time friends. “I’m a bit sad about losing some of the friends I’ve made, only some of them are coming with me,” he said. Lachie, who was one of the school captains at Ocean Grove primary this year, said he is looking forward to the

challenge secondary school will give. “It’s a little bit daunting with the changine classes and manouvering around the school,” he said. “I’m a bit nervous but happy and excited at the same time.”

OCEAN GROVE PRIMARY OCEAN Grove Primary School will send their 47 senior students to nine different schools next year. Before heading off, Izzy Greer, Nathan Taylor and Lachie Hooper have been reflecting on their primary school years all the way back

to day one. “I was nervous, you don’t know who your teacher is and there are all new people to meet, much like going to high school in a way,” Nathan said. Izzy who received an academic scholarship to The

Geelong College said she will have to make a whole lot of new friends at her new school next year. “I’m basically leaving all my friends but hopefully we’ll keep in touch,” she said. Lachie agreed and said he is sad to part ways with many of

Carols in the Park

Merry Christmas Ocean Grove CLOSE to 3,000 people trekked down to Ocean Grove’s Carols in the Park for one of the best events in recent years. Despite weather predictions that had Sunday written off in the week leading up, beautiful evening sun was streaming over the stage. The breeze was cool but less than the previous few years. Even the mozzies seemed to

stay away. Highlights of the evening included the spirited - and often animated - singing from the town’s three primary schools. On some songs they combined while on others they went solo. Performances by the youngsters were interspersed by the wonderful Ocean Grove

Carols in the Park Choir and the highly polished Queenscliff Lighthouse Group soloists and choir together with singers from the Ocean Grove churches. Popular master of ceremonies Mark Hyland from BayFm, kept the youngsters on the edges of their seats with a commentary on the imminent arrival of Father Christmas.

A first appearance by the Community Enterprise’s new outdoor cinema screen gave the big crowd a close up view of all that was happening, even if they were parked further back in the audience. What follows is a colourful celebration of Ocean Grove’s special Christmas event.

The social evening also included the presentation of two cheques to the town’s surf lifesaving club. Lin Bell presented Alistair McCooke with a cheque for $5,000 raised at the Frenzy shopping event while Westpac manager Fran Trewin also handed over a cheque for $500 raised through the bank’s Community Cup contest between Collingwood and Adelaide.

OCEAN Grove and Barwon Heads RSL enjoyed their first joint Christmas lunch at Club Grove last week. The sub-branches amalgamated earlier this year and now hold their meetings together. Members enjoyed lunch and hamper prizes were drawn during the lunch. Details of winners to follow in the next Voice.

Parts for anything with an engine PARTS 4 Automotive is a family owned and operated Automotive store located in Sinclair Street Ocean Grove. “The business has been here for over eight years supplying products and services to the trade and retail customers wide and far,” explained owner Kristian Hundahl who has recently taken it over from his parents Christina and Prab Hundahl. That came about in July this year due to a fire that devastated their Grovedale store. Kristian has been in the Automotive industry for more than 25 years. His staff includes Rob, Dion and Nick as full time employees. “Christina and Prab wisely choose the location initially as a sister store to our seven-day-a-week Grovedale Store. “Due to recent events Christina and Prab have retired and after negotiating our options we decided that there was a demand and need for the public in Ocean Grove for the store to operate 7 days a week.” Paint mixing is a big part

of their business. “We have one of Geelong’s best eye matchers on staff and supply paint for an enormous variety of applications, not just automotive. “Oil and Lubricants are also another large part of our trade again with a wide variety of applications including excavation equipment and

machinery, marine, motor sport, hydraulics and daily driving. “We do what we can to support local Schools, SES, Police and Sporting clubs on the Bellarine Peninsula.” Surf Coast Speed Shop is located upstairs of the Parts 4 building. Stocking custom and speed equipment and can offer custom engine building.

“This has been a passion of mine for many years and I enjoy working with people and their projects. “Being part of the community is what I really enjoy, I love hot rods, speedway, drag cars and boats, tractor pulls, street cars and anything with an engine. “Going to various car shows keeps me aware of new products and styles

which I can then help people with their build and advising of many options to make their ride their very own. “It is not about how much money you can spend, I believe it is about the smile on the faces of people when they do their own work and can jump in and go for a cruise down the road.”

Black winged wader

NATURE watch this week concerns the Black Winged Stilt. There are many of these beautiful birds living at Lake Connewarre at the moment. These stilts are usually found in small flocks, and I spotted a group of about 50 birds last week, all flying together, and what a beautiful sight it was! The Black-winged Stilt is a large black and white wading bird, growing to around 39cms

in length (and half this length includes the elongated legs, hence the name). They have really long orange-red legs, a straight black bill and an orange eye. Both sexes are similar, so it is hard to differentiate males from females. Black-winged Stilts are quite vocal and have a high-pitched call. These birds are found throughout Australia (except

they have not caught the ferry to Tasmania as yet). They are also found in America, South America, Asia and New Zealand. They live in marshes, shallow lakes and ponds. Some populations are migratory and move to ocean coasts in winter. In warmer climates the Stilts generally remain all year around. The stilts feed on insects and shellfish. They can be seen

wading in shallow water looking for insects, and rarely swim in search of food, even though they can swim. They nest on the ground or on reeds, and defend their nest against predators, as I found out when I was standing on the side of the Barwon Heads Road. A pair of Stilts kept flying at me and swooping, much like Masked Plovers. By Jennifer Carr

school sports

Stars shine at Albert Park track and field champs

Top three spot Bellarine’s Year 8 cricket team.

BELLARINE Secondary College Ocean Grove’s campus is fast becoming a breeding ground for Victorian sports success in 2011. Last month, the Year 7 boys hockey team finished second in the state, now the Year 8 girls cricket team are officially ranked third in the state. The Year 8 girls defeated teams all over the state to finish third in the Victorian Championships on December 1. While a player down through injury in the

Grand Final playoff, Bellarine lost to a far superior Melbourne Girls College outfit who went on to make the final. Bellarine defeated a number of local neighbouring schools in a round robin competition in October, including Newcomb Secondary College and claimed a thrilling one-run win against Belmont High School. Bellarine Secondary College Sports Coordinator Adam McIntosh paid tribute to the Year 8

girls cricket and said it had capped off a great year for sport at the school. “2011 has proved to become a hugely successful year for junior sport,” McIntosh said. “Eight teams progressed through to the Geelong District level to Barwon South Western Championships, four to the Western Conference. “The Year 8 boys and girls rugby league 8’s team, Year 7 boys hockey and now the Junior Girls Cricket team moving through to the State Championships.”

Caitlin Pickett, Heidi Demeo, Abbey Badrock.

MEET the successful triple school sports act raising the profile of athletics at Ocean Grove’s Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School. Students Heidi Demeo, Caitlin Pickett and Abbey Badrock all competed at the School Sport Victoria Track and Field Championships at Albert Park last month. Leader of the pack is Grade five student Heidi Demeo, who won the Under 11 girls 800m event to become state champion for the second year in a row. Heidi also represented Victoria at the National Track and Field championships in the earlier qualification program in the School Sports Championships 800m event in Darwin in September. “Well I ran in the 800m and finished second in the Nationals and we won our medley event, in the state athletics I did the 1500m and I came fourth,” Heidi said. Heidi is considered a class act on the athletics track by her peers who has competed at four national

championships, is also a versatile cross country athlete. “Heidi is a freak at everything, she is an allrounder,” Abbey said of Heidi’s success. Meanwhile, Caitlin further strengthen the school’s athletics success finishing 14th in Victoria in the 1500m event at the School Sports Events Under 12’s event. Last but not least, is Abbey Badrock who competed in the 80m hurdles event for 12-13 aged girls who finished second in her heat and completed her final in fourth placed. In a highly competitive final, little room separated for first and fourth placed for times. “My time was 13:39, this is really random but there were 42 hundredths of a second between me and the first place,” said Abbey a Grade six student. “We had to wait for a photo finish because it was so close.”

Pace race on the parade OCEAN Grove’s i-Grove business park has become the home of a leg of Geelong Cycling Club’s twilight racing series. The 100-year-old club has held its inaugural race on the 600m inner loop off Grubb Road comprising Sinclair Street, Marine Parade and Everist Street on Saturday. Racing started at 5.30pm with the organisers temporarily closing the streets for safety. The racing comprised three grades over a two hour period. This first event attracted a small crowd keen to watch close racing on the flat and fast hot mix surface. Ahead of the race track officials cleared and swept small stones from the

circuit and briefed the riders on potential hazards. Ocean Grove will be the venue again on Saturday January 14 and Saturday February 25, both from 5.30pm. In between those dates the riders will compete at Belmont Criterium Circuit and Eastern Gardens. Spectators are encouraged to come along and watch and Geelong Cycling Club members will be on hand to answer any questions. The top three results were: A Grade: 1. Nyko, 2. Blake Hose, 3. Oliver KentSpark. B grade: 1. Nick Kennedy, 2. Erik Holt, 3. Grant Blake. C grade: 1. Simon Diderrich, 2. Zac Madden, 3. Jamie Leigh Edwards.

OCEAN Grove Harriers annual bike-run offered up its fair share of tradition, inspiration and of course, controversy. Traditionally the teams have always run along Flinders Parade on the Barwon Heads side and then turned left into OzoneRoad for the first changeover. But not this Saturday as road workers were sealing the street at 7am on the day of the race. After failing to persuade the traffic man to let the teams through runners discovered an alternative route and the race

continued. Controversially, some of the participants ignored certain instructions while the pairing of some of the athletes was deemed ‘dubious’. In the end the second placed Rossy pair took home the trophy. The final placings were: 1. James and Doaky, 2. Rossy and Tom, 3. Madge and Steve M, 4. Lori and Grant, 5. Ann and Colin, 6, Phil E and Steve G, 7. Bruce and Dave, 8. Matt and Dropsy, 9. Nigel and Symone, 10. Donna and Colin.

Ocean Grove Surf Lifesavers Profile: Guy Kinsey Favourite beach? It would be Ocean Grove beach, but I also prefer RAAF’s or down to the side in front of the lookout. Favourite holiday destination? Coolangatta. What do you like most about the beach? It is unpredictable, it can be sunny one day, rainy the next, just have fun and see what happens. How many years have you been a lifesaver for? Ever since I was born, I’m 19 now. Facebook or Twitter? Facebook If you were stuck on Desert Island what one item would you like to bring? I would probably take a box of mangoes.

SOUL end of season awards Equal first in the juniors, Ben Considine and Myles Fletcher.

Women’s champ Mel Renton.

The SOUL Longboard club recently held its 2011 presentation night in the SOUL Bar at the Ocean Grove Hotel. A great night for many started by getting the courtesy bus provided by the club and driven by Basha. Once at the venue the live music, video presentations, season championship and trophy presentations kept every one entertained. SOUL President Brian Tucker said “this has been a great night for the club. We’ve had over 100 people turn up and stick around for some good music, good results and some good times with friends. All of us on the committee work hard during the year to make it all happen and it’s great to catch up with every one on a night like this. We had some excellent results this year with surfers

doing well at the Aussie Champs and it all looks good for next year too. I am especially excited with the junior program, as we have a couple of the best in the land already doing well and it looks like quite a few more coming through.” A major award each year is the Presidents Award. This award is for someone who has been involved around the club, and gets stuck into all that goes on. This year the very deserving winner was the retiring treasurer Mark Beshara. After the trophy presentations there was a photo and video presentation of some of what had happened during the year. It was then onto the juke box/ karaoke and finally the courtesy bus home. Harfield impresses at Coffs OCEAN Grove’s Gus Harfield, representing Bellarine Secondary College and paired with Torquay surfer Harrison Mann, were unlucky not to win a national schools competition at Coff Harbour earlier this month. The local pair made the final of the under 19 boys all star schools team at the Australian Junior Surfing titles but were beaten by the slimmest 21.05 to 20.45 margin by a Tasmanian team. The Vic boys defeated

New South Wales and South Australian teams to reach the final. Australian champions across under 18 and under 16 girl and boy divisions are crowned at this event. the event is also crucial in determining the Australian junior team to compete at the world junior titles in South America early next year. School surfing teams from all over Australia also compete at this event representing individual schools and their state school systems.

Martial art for all ages THE sport of Japanese Jujitsu is not a sport you would normally associate with the Bellarine Aquatic and Sports Centre in Ocean Grove. But Ocean Grove based local Stephen Cosgrave, a holder of 4th dan in Japanese Jujitsu, has been an instructor in the sport for more than 20 years. Japanese Jujitsu is a form of martial arts and a method of close combat for defeating an armed and armoured opponent in which one uses no weapon, or only a short weapon. Originally from England, Cosgrave takes all different aged groups from five-year-olds to people aged 90, two nights a week at BASC on Monday and Wednesday nights. He teaches juniors who run from 6:30pm to 7.30pm and adult aged groups run from 7.30pm to 9pm. Cosgrave said there is a big emphasis on self defence in Japansese Jujitsu, not just defeating their opponent.

“I just like to build awareness that we are here at the Bellarine Aquatic Sports Centre in Shell Road, just trying to get many people to enjoy themselves,” Cosgrave said. “There is only one class of Japanese Jujitsu class on the Bellarine Peninsula and that is us, and if you don’t want to go all the way to Geelong, then Ocean Grove is the only place on the whole of the Bellarine Peninsula. “Jujitsu is very good (in Australia) equally on par with Europe and the rest of the year.” Cosgrave comes with a high pedigree in the sport – He has competed for England, he is the Head for Jikishin Jujitsu Australia and a member of the Australian Jujitsu Federation and United Nations of Jujitsu. Cosgrave, who moved to Australia more than 10

Stephen Cosgrave.

years ago, has travelled extensively with the sport of Japanese Jujitsu including most parts of Europe and South Africa. Cosgrave is in high demand for Martial

Arts seminars all round Australia; last month he was invited as a guest instructor to the Kyushin Ryu School of Jujitsu (An International Martial Arts Seminar) in Brisbane.

A one-hour Jujitsu junior lesson with Stephen costs $10 a lesson and $15 for a 90 minute session for adults. For more information contact 0438 019991.

junior cricket

Cobras Rockets THREE junior Collendina cricketers have been chosen to play for the Barwon Rockets representative team, writes Mark Heenan. The junior Cobras include Barwon Rockets Under 16 representative Curtly Balshaw and

Under 14 representatives Byron Taylor and Darcy Pearson. The Barwon Rockets players can be chosen from the wider Geelong region including the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast areas and the state’s Western District

including Colac. Training stepped up a gear this week in preparation for next month’s state region carnival where the Barwon Rockets will play games in Geelong and Melbourne over one week against Victoria’s other top cricket regions. The Under 14 team played in a Twenty 20 practice match on December 12 against an Under 15 Geelong Cricket Association (GCA) team at the Geelong College Senior School. Meanwhile the Under 16 Barwon Rockets team played in a Twenty 20 practice match against Under 18 Barwon Rockets also on Monday. 15-year-old Curtly Balshaw who plays junior cricket at Collendina, has accepted the challenge of furthering his senior cricket career this season winning a seconds turf grade role with South Barwon in the GCA. Curtly, currently a bottom aged player in the Under 16’s after

playing with the Under 14’s Barwon Rockets last season, is a member of the junior Melbourne Cricket Club development squad. A top order batsman Curtly is relishing the challenge of testing his ability on the turf wickets in the GCA compared to the BPCA’s hard wicket competition. “It is different playing on hard wicket in the BPCA, the ball bounces differently on turf, it has been challenging playing against the men,” said Curtly, who played A-Grade cricket last season with Collendina. Meanwhile, Byron who was named vice-captain of the Under 14’s Barwon Rockets team, and Darcy have enjoyed promising seasons to date in the Collendina Under 15’s Emond grade team. Both players have made half-centuries with the bat in the 2011/12 and also played B-Grade cricket with Collendina. Byron has also played two A-Grade matches for Collendina this season.

SELECT THREE: Byron Taylor, Curtly Balshaw and Darcy Pearson.

Cobras and Grubbers head to head OCEAN Grove grabbed the glory when the two local under 17 sides met on Saturday. Spared the vagaries of the weather, the Snake Pit was bathed in morning sun for the second day of the derby. The star of the two-dayer was Grubbers wicketkeeper and captain Brad Fendyk (inset) who added to a magnificent 97 innings by taking four for three runs while bowling.

THE A-Grade Collendina Cobras continued their unbeaten start to the season to claim a six-wicket win over Newcomb in Round five of the BPCA. The game was reduced to a 40-over per side one day game after rain washed out play on day one. Newcomb won the toss and batted first to compile 8/137 from their 40 overs. Both Brett Gasper (2/28) and Dan Earley (2/24) collected two wickets apiece for the Cobras. In reply, Collendina openers James Rock and

Richie Peters shared in an 88-run opening partnership stand to set up the win. Peters (52) continued his excellent start to the season with a half-century and followed on from his unbeaten hundred against Drysdale in Round three, while Rock made a solid 35. The Cobras finished on 4/142 in the 37th over and won with three overs to spare. IN THE B-Grade, Collendina earned a 61run victory over Newcomb in their one-day match at Collendina.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, No.3 batsman Chris Kavaliunas got the home side off to a bright start making 40. Newcomb’s bowlers fought back to have the home side reeling at 8/120, bowlers Shane O’Connell and Michael Costello grabbing three wickets apiece. But a ninth-wicket 109run partnership stand between Cobra pair Des Every and Dean Britt helped turn the match back in Collendina’s favour. Batting at No.9 Every

Grubbers round 5 OCEAN Grove A-Grade cruised to an eight wicket win over Barrabool in their Round five BPCA clash on Saturday December 3. The Grubbers won the toss and sent Barrabool into bat first in the 80 over clash. Ocean Grove took control of Barrabool’s bad shot selection with the bat, the home team bowled out for 113 inside their 40 overs. Assistant coach Mick Gill did the bulk of the damage taking 4/23, while new recruit and fill in bowler Mitch Hodgson bowled

well grabbing 3/20. “It was a nice percentage boost,” Ocean Grove coach Lucas Cameron said after the match. “The bowling wasn’t magnificent more just poor batting, but Mitch (Hodgson) did a nice job picking up three wickets in his fill in role as medium pace bowler.” In reply, Ocean Grove made light work of Barrabool’s mediocre total score of 113, the visitors reaching 2/115 in the 19th over. Opening batsman Pat

made an unbeaten 61, while Britt compiled 41. In reply, Britt followed his strong showing with the bat taking 3/12 off four overs as Collendina dismissed Newcomb for 168. C-GRADE saw Collendina emerge with a 15-run victory over Barrabool. The Cobras batted first in the 40 over per side oneday clash and were bowled out for 188 in the 38th over. Collendina’s Julian Wilson top scored with 38, while Dave Treharne made 33.

In reply, Barrabool were bowled out for 173, Nick Binder and Chris Pitfield both taking three wickets apiece. THE D-Grade match between Collendina and Wallington saw the Cobras claim a six-wicket win. Wallington who batted first were bowled out for 83, Clynt Combridge the main destroyer with the ball taking 4/18, while Mark Fletcher took 3/18. In reply, the Cobras made 4/89 and won with 11 overs to spare.

Kuipers compiled his way to 59, while Dean Gills (26) and David Turner (25 not out) made valuable contributions. “Should have passed them none down, to be honest, but the batsmen that got a hit made it look very easy,” Cameron said. A SPARKLING century from Mick Kenneady helped Ocean Grove to a 187-run win over Barrabool in their B-Grade one-day match. Ocean Grove blitzed their way to 5/229 from their

40 overs, with Kenneady, batting at number 6, remained unbeaten on 117 not out. In reply, the Grubbers bowled out the visitors for 82 in the 29th over, Ocean Grove bowler Luke Hardiman the star with the ball taking 4/14 from 6.2 overs. IN the C-Grade, Ocean Grove lost to Drysdale 1 by six wickets at Drysdale. Batting first, the Grubbers were bowled out for 84 in the 40th over. In reply, Drysdale made

4/86 from 33 overs, Dale Savage the only Ocean Grove bowler to trouble the opposition batsman taking 2/17. THE D-Grade was basically an intraclub match as Ocean Grove 1 took on Ocean Grove 2 in their oneday match.
