Draft plan for caravan parks BARWON Coast has released a draft 10-year masterplan for its caravan parks with a view to “improving equity of access to the caravan parks” and maintaining an “appropriate mix of accommodation options”. Barwon Coast is now looking for feedback from campers on the plans after it sent out a brochure and questionnaire last week. Barwon Coast General Manager Bob Jordan said that it had developed the draft 10 year masterplans for its caravan parks after taking direction from recommendations within the August 2005 Victorian Government’s Caravan and Camping Parks on Coastal Crown land report. If implemented, key changes at the Riverview Family Caravan Park in Ocean Grove would include the relocation of the main entrance of the caravan park to the existing southern entrance

close to all casual sites, while maintaining the current main entrance for weekender siteholder usage, construction of a new office at south entrance along with a park manager’s house, installation of ten new cabins and the creation of a larger open spaces area through the middle of the caravan park with the loss of “a number” of camp sites. In addition, Mr Jordan added that part of the plan to improve equity of access to the caravan parks would mean that as of July 1 this year, site holders would have a maximum ten years occupancy of the site and that the sale of annual (weekender) vans and annexes on the site would be prohibited from July 1, 2013. Feedback must be received by the end of February. More details, including proposals for the Barwon Heads Caravan Park, available at www.barwoncoast.com.au.

Summer Bay meets Underbelly in Ocean Grove

A USUALLY secluded part of an Ocean Grove beach became a centre of attention last week when a film crew cordoned off a section to shoot a new film. Actors Luke Jacobz and Kaela Hilton were surrounded by sunbaking extras as producer Ron Brown arranged the scene for the independent film Suite for Fleur on the beach area at the foot the beach stairs off Wedge Street. Jacobz, who recently won Dancing with the

Stars and previously featured in Heartbreak High, McLeod’s Daughters and Home and Away, was filmed applying sun cream to Hilton, herself recently a star in the Underbelly. Most of the filming was trouble free although the director was seen to lose his cool when a line of spectators formed up right across the screen shot. The slightly heated situation was diffused when the interested beachgoers moved on and the camera was turned to face the ocean.

Cenotaph plants ripped out during New Year VANDALS have desecrated the town cenotaph by ripping out native plants surrounding it. Local member Ron Johnson described it as an “act of desecration” which had since been reported to the police. RSL members are now hopeful that Geelong Council will step in and replace lost plants that were ripped out over the New Year. Mr Johnson said that he had been in touch with local councillor Jan Farrell who had asked council maintenance teams to look at restoring it as soon as possible. Any information call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 The empty cenotaph flowerbed. 000.

Voice on Holiday Ocean Grove’s David Francis enjoyed a Christmas cruise on the good ship Sun Princess over the festive period. Not as though was short of views, he took along a copy of essential reading material. The picture was taken as the ship neared Wilson’s Prom on the way home. “Incidentally, there were about 25 other “Grovers” on board and all had the same good time as me,” said David. • It’s a new year and you’re off on your holidays soon? Don’t forget to pack a copy of the Voice along with all the other must-takes and get a photo you reading it in a great location. Thanks to everyone who has sent in pictures so far. We’ll publish a special colour gallery at the end of the year. Send your pictures to news@oceangrovevoice.com or post it to PO Box 54, Ocean Grove 3226. Jet ski cops enforce 5-knot limit JET ski cops have been on patrol along the Barwon Estuary at Ocean Grove. The water patrol is part of a joint Victorian Police, Barwon Coast and Park Victoria initiative to encourage responsible boating That includes ensuring river users are aware of a 5-knot speed limit in the Barwon Estuary. “The estuary is known for its calm waters, scenic landscape and biodiversity values,” explained Maddie Glynn of Barwon Coast. “With summer upon us, the estuary is enjoyed by many for swimming, kayaking, sailing, boating and fishing, as well as for access to Bass Strait for power boating activity. Right: Barwon Coast and Parks Victoria are working closely with Victoria Police on enforcing water rules.

“The increase in visitor numbers means greater activity on and in the water. It is important to know that the Barwon River Estuary has a 5-knot speed limit (equivalent to a fast walking pace) for all powered watercraft,” said Maddie. “This speed limit is to ensure protection of other water users, and assist with protection of coastal biodiversity values such as bank stabilisation and aquatic life. “Persons found not complying with the 5-knot speed limit and endangering life may face penalties.” Maddie urged users to respect the estuary and other users.

A message to you, Brumby WHAT must have been close to 1000 people turned out at the One Voice One Bridge rally at Barwon Heads on Sunday. For the first hour the mix of Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and supportive visitors listened to the music of Broderick Smith, Sambrose Automobile and Chris Wilson before local speakers gave impassioned speaches about why they were opposed to the VicRoads plan to build two bridges in place of the iconic existing one. Speakers included Michael Harbour of Ocean Grove Community Association, councillor Jan Farrell, local ScreenActors manager Peter Rich-

ards, Senator Colleen Hartland, Barwon Heads Association president Geoffrey Waite, and Piping Hot Chicken Shop owner John Bowman. Local councillor Jan Farrell was scathing in her comments about her own political party’s handling of the bridge issue. The rally was held in opposition to the government’s approval for VicRoads to construct a second (new) bridge 21 metres downstream (towards the sea) from the existing bridge. The rally was organised by the Barwon Heads Association and the Ocean Grove Community Association.

a day in the life - dave lewis

MY name is Dave Lewis. I was born in Ocean Grove and went to Ocean Grove Primary School and then Queenscliff High. My love of surfing started when I was in high school and I surfed a lot in those days. I left school after year 10 to complete a panel beating apprenticeship. This trade wasn’t for me and, having always been a keen artist, I later moved to Melbourne to pursue a career in tattooing. After working in Melbourne for several years, my love of surfing and the laid back coastal lifestyle led me back to Ocean Grove where I now live permanently with my young family. I opened my tattoo studio, Coastline Tattoo, in the Trak Ar-

cade in April 2006. I would have to say that tattooing is my passion and I love my job. I often say I’m living the dream! I get to meet lots of different people from all walks of life and so my work is always interesting. I barely even get Monday-itis. I do all types of tattoo work and I love creating custom designs. My work day doesn’t Dave and daughter Lou Lou. start until 12, as tattooing is not something people like to get done in the morning. This suits me as I don’t have to rush to work early. I’m not really a morning person and I like being able to walk to work with my 1 year old daughter, Lu Lu. It’s quicker for me to walk to work than drive and try to find a car park! I work 6 days a week and I often work late, especially over summer, so some nights I don’t get home until 10pm or later. When I’m not at work I like spending time with my family, catching up with friends having a fish at the river, and surfing (when I get a chance). After years of tinkering, in early 2008 I patented my first invention which is a surf water feature. I’m a bit of an ideas man and I have many more inventive ideas brewing. I like living in Ocean Grove because of the cruisy lifestyle I have here and I love living near the beach. It’s a great place to raise children. I remember being mocked as a teenager by mates from Geelong for living by the sea. They would say that I must live in a driftwood shack with salt water coming out of the taps. How times have changed . . . . it’s now seen as cool to be living on the coast. If I didn’t live here I would probably live somewhere warm and tropical, but right now I’m very happy where I’m at.

Fair was ‘one of best’

TRANQUILITY Fair organisers say they were thrilled with the turnout at this year’s event. The weather - blamed the previous year for being too hot - was described as ‘perfect’ by volunteers of the Ocean Grove Park Committee. Visitors enjoyed dozens of stalls and music from the Go Set, Stephen McEwan and Hollie Joyce. The success of the event is crucial for funding the ongoing maintenance and improvements at Ocean Grove Park. About 12 years ago locals saved the park from almost certain development and the Tranquility Fair, along with car boot sales, have proven successful and popluar fundraisers.

arts in the grove

First for network AN art show planned for the Australia Day weekend has the potential to launch a creative new era in the Grove. The show will feature a wide variety of local artists displaying and selling their work in the gallery entrance to Noel Essex’s workshop in Grubb Road. Among the work featured will be paintings by Don Walters and Molly Drayton, charcoal and paint by Jenny McLaughlan, fabric/batic by Mandi Hall, photography by Alan Barber and mixed media by Kerrie Bedson, as well as some

of Noel Essex’s own sculptures. Local violinist Phil Smurthwait will also be performing in the gallery, adding to the cultural experience. The event is being organised by Noel and the Ocean Grove Arts Network (OGAN) and it is hoped that more artists will join up and become involved in future projects. The show runs on Saturday 24, Sunday 25 and Monday 26 from 10am-4pm each day. Noel Essex Fine Art is at 54 Grubb Road, Ocean Grove.

Dennis Sonogan and Julie Pedler have an art exhibition at 7th Wave.

Coastal arts

ARTISTS Julie Pedler and Dennis Sonogan have begun their third year of exhibiting their works at 7th Wave Restaurant. The couple who major on coastal art had previously relied on the support of the previous owners and are grateful that the new family running it are also happy to host the summer show. In the past year Dennis won a prestigious award for an acrylic of Barwon Heads Bridge, while Julie paints the snow scenes at Falls Creek during the winter. The show is due to run until the end of February.

The plover or ‘masked lapwing’ is a large (3338cm) ground dwelling bird Plovers are similar in stature to wading birds in that they have long legs. They are white, with brown wings and back, and a black crown and have yellow bills with yellow ‘wattles’ next to the bill. Plovers also have a thorny yellow and black spur that projects from each wing. The male and female plovers look very similar, however the males tend to have a larger spur. The spur does not contain venom, contrary to urban myths! They have a very loud, distinctive cry, with a wide range of vocal calls. The masked lapwing is common throughout northern, southern and eastern Australia, and inhabits marshes, mudflats, beaches and grasslands. They feed on insects and worms. They can be found alone or in small groups. The masked lapwing builds nests on the ground, and as the birds live on the ground they are always alert for predators. They often build nests in area’s inhabited by humans, such as school playgrounds, playing fields, supermarket car parks or spare urban blocks. Usually three to five eggs are layed in a nest. Both parents take turns to incubate the eggs. The young are born with down/feathers intact and can leave the nest a

few hours after hatching to look for food. The masked lapwing will vigorously defend its nesting site, especially after the eggs have hatched. Adults will dive on people, dogs, cats and other birds to protect their young, and have been known to injure predators such as ravens, with their aggression. They have been known to pretend to have a broken wing to lure predators away from the nest ! The breeding pair will often return to the same breeding ground year after year. Urbanisation and the dangers of living on the ground make the struggle for survival for adults and chicks a constant issue. The masked plover can be aggressive, but only when protecting their young. They really are a beautiful bird. By Jenny Carr

Festival set to Go OCEAN Grove Summer Festival is all set to Go this weekend. For the second year the organisers have pulled together a strong line up of bands and musicians as well as plenty of great community attractions. Topping the bill will be the Go Set, Josh Owen Band and George Kamikawa. Kamikawa will also play a free after party from 9pm on Saturday. But this year there will also be a community stage at the Hodgson Street end of the Terrace. That stage will feature a drum school demo, kids acting, Falun Dafa exercise and meditation as well as a kids talent show and local talent showcase. Market stalls will be open from 10am to 5pm and a historic surf display will offer a nostalgic look back at early boards and trends. As with last year the event will also include a Kidz Zone offering crafts, face painting and other fun entertainment from 10am until 4pm. Back on the music, after a wellreceived taster at the Tranquility Fair a fortnight ago, the Go Set are back in town and ready to folk rock The Terrace on Saturday night.

By then the audience should be well in the mood for a jig. This band has just returned from Europe where they have finally been taken seriously. On the back of this they have secured bookings that will shortly take them back to Germany and the UK where they will do the festival circuits. Earlier in the day Tessa and the Typecast will be sharing their energetic mix of jazz and Indie style and they will be followed by Howlin’ Wind, Sweet Delors and the Josh Owen Band. • Just in case you can’t get enough of the Go Set, the band has kindly donated a signed copy of their A Journey for a Nation CD to one lucky reader. To win the CD answer the following question correctly. What coastal town did the Go Set perform at on January 14? Answers to news@oceangrovevoice.com

What facilities does Grove need? By Clive Whitworth

Zac Bellman, 11, of Ocean Grove, said: “More bike jumps because the Woodlands ones are wrecked. It’s different to the skate park.”

Nancy Cooper, 88, of Ocean Grove, said: “I’ve only been here 2 years and I like everything about Ocean Grove, but the toilets in the Coles car park could be improved a lot.”

Retiree Carmel Doherty, 68, of Ballarat, said: “We have a holiday house here. I don’t use the local facilities much, but it will be handy when Target is finished!”

George Balakrishna, 9, of Ocean Grove, said: “We could make the toilets in the Coles car park better, they smell and they need replacing.”

Mike Nichol, 54, of Ocean Grove, said: “I think it would be nice to have a Gym attached to the swimming pool area. That would make a lot of sense. The area lends itself to being a really good sporting precinct.”

Retiree Ivor Chappell, 67, of Barwon Heads, said: “I’d like to see a bike trail from Ocean Grove to Point Lonsdale behind the sand dunes to complete a loop from here to the Rail Trail to Geelong and back through Barwon Heads.”

A family Passion that pears fruit

Brett and Karen Phillips and their children Rory and Gabi.

PASSION Fruit and Vegetables, a retail and wholesale fresh fruit and vegetable shop, opened its doors two weeks ago on the Terrace next to Kairos in Grove. Brett and Karen Phillips have gone into partnership with a couple from Bonneys Corner Store in Kilgour street, Geelong. Between the four of them they will cover the hours required to run a small business. Before this, Karen worked in administration in both small and large business and Brett is still working as a sales rep for a chemical manufacturing company. Having lived in Ocean Grove for just over five years, they are really thrilled to be working and living in their home town. Most of their business so far has been done with locals, which has been very encouraging. They plan on providing quality produce and

a personalised service which will include free home delivery. They’d also like to increase their range to include smoothies, juices, sandwiches and rolls as well as soup in winter.. They will also include whole foods, dried fruits, nuts and legumes. High on their list of plans to help and sponsors local events will be fruit and vegetable platters. With Gabi, one of their three children, in Grade 1 at Ocean Grove Primary School, “becoming involved in all community events is essential and exciting,” said Brett. “Community is very important.” Away from the business family comes first! Brett loves most sports, music and the beach and Karen enjoys healthy living, gardening and of course they both enjoy having a few drinks with friends.

What women want, She makes LOCAL women are doing for themselves – in Madeley Street. In November last year Sandra Anastassiou opened her home to showcase the talents of local artisans. The relative newcomer to Ocean Grove soon discovered that there were lots of people with a passion and talent for making things. The showcase went so well that Sandra decided to do it permanently – from a shop in Madeley Street. “I’ve called it SheSells – because she sells candles, she sells Jewellery she sells scarves etc,” said Sandra. “The inspiration for the shop is for local artisans and others who want to try their hand at retailing to be able to come together and do something that would not be possible on their own. I worked in the rag trade for many years before having a family. SheSells has given me an opportunity to go back into retail as part of the co-operative.” She said “With a young family, I, like the other women involved, would not be in a position to do that on my own. “We have only just opened and are not fully set up yet. We don’t even have proper signs - but we will soon, as well as a website. We are all very excited because it is so nice to be part of doing something together as a group. “We share the expenses of the shop, we share

New trophy for community bowls COMMUNITY bowls teams will get the chance to vie for a new trophy from this year. The Community Challenge, which is now entering its 11th year, has proven a huge hit in the town, providing a great night’s entertainment and socialising with the chance to learn lawn bowls. The major sponsor of the competition is Vines Lawyers and the decision has been made

to build on this and introduce a new perpetual trophy. The new trophy will be donated by the Ocean Grove Voice. Community bowls teams consist of four players, male, female, mixed and all ages and will take place on four consecutive Monday evenings in March. The bowls is fairly informal with the only stipulation being that players wear flat soled

shoes - or no shoes. Bowls will be provided for players who cannot obtain their own. The cost per player is $10 per night which includes a meal at the end of the game. “This is a great opportunity for your business or group to have a fun time,” said co-ordinator John McConville. Caravaners’ Cup returned to club, and retained by Ocean Grove FOR 18 Years Ocean Grove Cricket Club has hosted a Caravaners’ Cup to welcome tourists to the town. And for the 4th year in a row Ocean Grove Holiday Park played Collendina in the final. Wyndean, Riverview Holiday Park and previously Green Valley caravan parks have taken park in the annual competition. “We started the Cup in 1990-91 because there was a lot of negative press at the time about locals resenting tourists and we thought it would be a good means of getting them together,” explained club’s Craig Darcy. It has been held every summer since - except for 2005-06 when the Memorial Ground was declared unsafe by the Council. The teams also play for a trophy, not a cup but a shield, which has only just returned after going missing for the last five years. In this year’s competition, which was nearly rained off in the first hour, Ocean Grove won the final after making 5 for 92 off their 10 overs while Collendina couldn’t match it and were all out for 65 “Thanks to the support of Collendina C’van park, Ocean Grove Holiday Park, Riverview Holiday Park and Wynndean Resort and the help of our members another successful competition was held,” said Craig.
