GROVE FAMILY ROBINSON SAIL FOR NEW SHORES Xavier Robinson, his wife Al Spry and their children Roo, 4 and Cookie, 2, on board the Awaitea and ready to sail.
AN Ocean Grove family are packing up their home and setting sail to explore the Australian coast. Al Spry with husband Xavier Robinson, their children Roo, 4 and Cookie, 2 and Dizzy the Jack Russell are readying themselves for the trip of a lifetime. They have been living on their yacht the Awaitea, Maori for ‘water cloud’, for the past two weeks readying themselves
for their adventure. The family have rented out their house in Ocean Grove with the aim of living off the rental income and keeping as self sufficient as possible.
The plans are to be away for a year however the family don’t have anything set in stone for their trip, preferring to wait and see what happens as they go. Al said the best thing will be having the opportunity to stay somewhere they like for as long as they want and plan their sailing times for when the weather will be best. Continued page 2.

FORMER Ocean Grove Primary School pupil Glen Kuschert has now been back in Australia for a year after his tour of duty in Afghanistan. Major Glen who was the second-in-command of the Australian soldiers

Grove family Robinson AN Ocean Grove family are packing up their home and setting sail to explore the Australian coast. Al Spry with husband Xavier Robinson, their children Roo, 4 and Cookie, 2 and Dizzy the Jack Russell are readying themselves for the trip of a lifetime. They have been living on their yacht the Awaitea, Maori for ‘water cloud’, for the past two weeks readying themselves for their adventure. “We had only intended to be here for about a week but we’ve been held up by something or other, little things,” said Al. They are hoping to take off in the next two weeks but Al said that they were using the time to get used to being on the boat. “In regards to getting your sea legs, there’s a really gentle motion in the harbour, a little bit at a time,” she said. They purchased their new home seven years ago and it has become a labour of love for the young family. “I’ve redone all the electricals, all the plumbing, rebuilt the gear box and got a new engine, we’ve extensively worked the boat,” said Xavier. “It requires a lot of dedication.”
Al agreed and said that they bought the boat with the intention of living in it and travelling, so their dream has been a long time coming. “It was a make or break thing,” said Xavier. “I’m excited,” added Al. “ I’m nervous about it, but while the kids are young I would just hate the opportunity to pass us by.” The family have rented out their house in Ocean Grove with the aim of living off the rental income and keeping as self sufficient as possible. Roo will also be home schooled when the time comes but Al said that while they’re still young, it’s the best timing for a trip like theirs. Touring the yacht, it’s a surprise to see how many amenities (albeit small ones) can fit under the deck. There are three bedrooms with sleeping space for eight, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a living/ dining area. “As far as boats go it’s pretty spacious,” said Al. “We haven‘t even got an ensuite at home, it‘s the first time I‘ve even had one.” The plans are to be away for a year however the family don’t have anything set in stone for their trip, preferring to wait and see what
happens as they go. Al said the best thing will be having the opportunity to stay somewhere they like for as long as they want and plan their sailing times for when the weather will be best. “We’re just heading up the east coast initially to see how we tolerate each other,” Al said laughing. “It would be really nice to go onto New Guinea or Tonga, Samoa or whatever but it just depends on how we all cope, we’re just playing it by ear.” After living in Ocean Grove for ten years, they are also thinking about a new home for later, and suspect their time in Victoria may be finished . “We might settle somewhere warmer,” said Al although she said leaving has been tough as well. “Its bittersweet taking the kids away from their friends, so it’s been with a little bit of trepidation.” “But when you think about what they’re going to experience and the life they’re going to have, the kids are happy as long as they’re with mum and dad.” You can follow Al and her family as they travel around Australia via their blog: www.adriftfamilyrobinson. blogspot.com
A year on from Afghanistan FORMER Ocean Grove Primary School pupil Glen Kuschert has now been back in Australia for a year after his tour of duty in Afghanistan. Major Glen who was the secondin-command of the Australian soldiers while serving on the high plains of Afghanistan for nine months is now stationed at Broome and getting to do the things he dreamed of while away. Among those was to get a boat and go fishing. “I got home about a year ago. It seems like a long time. I still remember being out there like it was yesterday. “I am enjoying my time back home. I’ve spent time with family and fishing.” However, as the casualties continue to rise in the war ravaged country, Glen remains adament about the merits of the work he and the 400 servicemen under him were doing – and those that followed. The soldiers under Major Kuschert's command had two missions. The first was to mentor and support their partners in the
Afghan National Army while the second was to continue the reconstruction missions which Australians have been engaged in since 2006.That work continues. Corporal Mathew Hopkins, one of their team, was killed in a firefight with insurgents while serving with the Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force (MRTF) in Afghanistan. “I am always thinking about the boys that are still over there and he (Mathew) is always in our thoughts. “I don’t really have a change of view. I was then and still am proud to serve my country overseas. “During our period I noticed significant improvements in the area and I am sure it is improving.” To add to that Glen said he would readily go back if called on. “I am a professional soldier,” he said. Glen added that post tour and trauma support was “phenomenal”. “They really look after us,” he said. The former Bellarine Secondary College student worked as an Owen Crowl salesman between school and starting his studies at the Royal Military College at Duntroon.
Glen’s parents Pete and Alexandra Kuschert still live in Ocean Grove. Although proud of their son, Andrea described his time in Afghanistan as: “the worst nine months of our married life. “We are proud of him and what all the boys, and girls, out there are doing, but it was a most worrying time. Every waking moment we were thinking about him and wondering. “I just feel for every parent that has a son or daughter out there – particularly when you hear that another one has been injured or even killed. “We couldn’t wait to get him home. I cannot explain that it’s like. “Unfortunately some parents do not get that joy. You have to realise that they are in the army but you don’t really imagine that your children will actually go to war. No one thought there would be another war after Vietnam.” Andrea added that she and Pete are members of the Ocean Grove Bowling Club and that fellow members had given them “fastastic support” while their son was away.
Figured it A BELLARINE student has travelled to Sydney to take part in the 8th annual UBS Finance Academy. Nick Sanders travelled to Macquarie University last week to participate in a five day forum aimed at introducing public school students to future prospects in the finance industry. Nick said that he was enjoying learning about potential jobs for when he finishes his education. “We’ve been listening to people and their experiences and how to get involved in the industry,” he said. “It has opened up a window of opportunities.” As one of 50 year 11 students taking part in the prestigious program, the 16 year old applied for a position after his accounting teacher at Bellarine encouraged him to get involved.
Robots A robotics team from Bellarine Secondary College are back from the annual RoboCup Junior competition in Singapore. Jake and Ben Thomas had three days of competition against 2000 students from 40 different countries only just missing out on a poll position. Despite missing out on the trophy,16 year old Jake said he had made a number of new friends to add to his Facebook account. “It was great fun, I met some really good friends,” he said. RoboCup is an international soccer round robin where teams have to build a robot capable of playing autonomously. The Bellarine robotics team had spent the good part of six months building their machine. Despite some technological and mechanical difficulties, robotics teacher Brian Thomas said they enjoyed their time in Singapore. The next step for the team is to improve their robot for the Robocup Regionals at Kardinia College on July 17.

Pizza & Pasta Restaurant Cody and mum Ami.
Grove rallies for Cody LITTLE Cody Strahan’s spirit belies the heartbreaking ordeal life has so far offered him. He’s as cheeky – if not more so – as any other three-year-old boy. Cody and his mum Ami Hodgkinson have spent about a third of his life in hospital. The cost emotionally is hard enough. Trying to maintain a normal life around that is next impossible. Thanks to the efforts of the local Toy Library, the town is now rallying together as friends to help them out. The Ocean Grove Hotel is hosting a Family Fun Day on July
25 complete with silent auctions, raffles and kids activities to raise money to help support Cody and Ami. Cody was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma in 2009, an extremely rare eye cancer affecting only three people in Victoria every year. Earlier this year Cody was then diagnosed with a secondary tumour in his cheek after the cancer spread to his bone marrow. Cody now rarely spends time out of hospital and is only able to return home between his increasingly
aggressive treatments in the Royal Children’s and Geelong Hospitals. The next step in Cody’s treatment is high dose chemotherapy which needs to be administered in Melbourne this week before he is transferred to Geelong for recovery. Despite the need to up his treatment, Ami said that Cody is doing well. “Within himself he is doing absolutely fantastically,” she said. Organisers are hoping to raise $10,000 at the event however Ami says, “realistically anything will help me.”
The money will be used to help pay for Cody’s treatment and medication as well as travel expenses to and from the Royal Children’s and Geelong Hospitals and mortgage repayments for the next six months. Having only moved from Melbourne to Ocean Grove three years ago, Ami said she was overwhelmed with the support relatively new friends and neighbours have given her. “I want to say what an amazing community Ocean Grove is,” she said. “I never expected it, people just rallied behind me.”
Apprentice sells agents old site ANDREW Morello – the first winner of the Australian version of The Apprentice – was in town to sell two blocks of land in Orton Street earlier this month. Morello, pictured right, was asked to preside over the sale of the old CJ Keane site and similarly sized adjoining block. Two bidders vied for the blocks, with the winner of the first getting first bite at the second. Both the 947m2 and the 987m2 blocks went for $741,000. Buyer Mel Thomas of Bendigo said
they would build units on the site and a holiday home. Interestingly Mr Morello’s father John used to own some of the land that Ocean Grove Primary School now occupies, having sold it on in the early 70s. Meanhile a five-bed house on Thacker Street has sold for $2.55million. The home was purchased by a Hong Kong expat buyer who already owns another property in Ocean Grove and will use it as his Australian base.

AN Ocean Grove florist is celebrating back to back wins in the national wedding industry awards. Beachside Blooms has won the floral design category of the Australian Bridal Industry Awards for the second year in a row. The Australian Bridal Industry Academy runs the awards each year to find the best wedding suppliers as voted by the participating brides. Owner Shelley Keast said she was “excited and extremely privileged” to have won the award for the second time. Shelley was also a
finalist in 2008. She said Beachside Blooms works very hard to set high customer service standards. “The main thing is to remember that it is the biggest day of a bride’s life,” said Shelley. “The flowers must suit the style of the bride’s dress and the theme and formality of the wedding.” Shelley has been in the floral design industry for 20 years. “It was something that I always wanted to do,” she said. Shelley particularly enjoys catering for beach weddings.

New baby miracle AN Ocean Grove couple has welcomed their second daughter to their miracle family. Tarah Dower and Tom Smith are happy to announce the birth of Sadie Alice Smith at Geelong Hospital on July 2. As reported in the Voice (High Hopes for Second Miracle 19/5/2010) Tarah and Tom were expecting their second child this year defying all the odds after Tom’s battle with brain cancer in
2006. Sadie is the new younger sister for the couple’s first child, two year old Lola. Tarah said that Lola was enjoying being an older sister and helping mum out. “We’re all just soaking up Sadie’s cuteness, she’s a bit scrumptious!” Tarah said. The Voice, above, has recently visited Kununurra in the Kimberley region of north WA. Hilary B and family from Ocean Grove, who are travelling Australia, visited Jenny H (former Ocean Grove resident) who has moved to Kununurra. The weather: blue sunny skies and 30 degrees. Note the grass fire right next to the road; a very common sight with regular burnoffs in the dry season. Made us a bit nervous being from Vic’. Hope it makes you all feel warmer. day in the life - diane sapwell
A caring stamp on Grove I HAVE lived in Ocean Grove for twelve years, moving here from Barkers Vale Northern NSW. I grew up in Hope Street in Geelong West and attended Geelong West Primary and Bell Park Hill Secondary schools. My first memories of Ocean Grove are visiting as a child to enjoy the beach. I had an Auntie who had a home here so we came for summer holidays. My working career began in the ANZ bank on the corner of Moorabool and Malop Street where I was trained as a ledger machinist. From there I worked for Bradmill Industries also as a ledger machinist, but got the urge to visit sunny Queensland with my girlfriends. While there I had a variety of jobs that went from kitchenhand to working with a Taxation Consultant. There, although still working a ledger machinist, I became proficient in bookkeeping. For those who do not know what a ledger machinist does, it is the early form of “mechanical bookkeeping” and the debit and credit work is done on the one machine by changing bars. In Sydney I received Computer training, by working with CeMac a timber and door firm that was based in Auburn. When this company closed down I moved back to Northern NSW with my partner, who by then needed full time care. Michael and I had a very happy 19 years together living in both Murwillumbah and a place called Barkers Vale near the Border Ranges National Park in northern NSW. Sadly Michael died very suddenly, and my life was in limbo for some time, until I decided to ring up Mum and Dad and see if I could come home. Thankfully they said yes, so from 1998 I have been living in Thacker Street being a carer of firstly both my Mum and Dad, and now just Mum. Mum will be 93 in December this year, so I believe it is my time to cook, clean and wash for her so I am now classed as her full time Carer. This means Mum can have a great quality of life in a home she has lived in for over 30 years. I am involved with the Ocean Grove Uniting Church, in the capacity of Secretary/Treasurer, Elder of the Church, member of the Property Committee, member of the Outreach Community Centre that is in the process of being built, as well as being the Fete Convenor. I
became involved in the church by attending and then feeling the need to do more than sit on a pew. I am the Secretary, Assistant Treasurer and recently “Bingo caller” at the Senior Citizens Club. My Mum has always been a member of the Club and so I also went along and was then asked to be Secretary, once people knew that I had office skills. I was the founding member of the Stamp Club and have always been Secretary of the Club. In addition to this, I am a Committee member of the Ocean Grove Carols in the Park (no-one else would be the representative and because this is a Community event I felt that the Uniting Church needed to be involved), co-ordinator for Christian Religious Education for the whole school and CRE teacher for grade 5 at Ocean Grove Primary School (I enjoy connecting with children and two years ago the CRE coordinator was stepping down, and because I knew that for this important Christian outreach need to continue, I took on the role of co-ordinator) and a Member of the Ocean Grove RSL Sub Branch. My other involvements in the Community have included being Secretary for the Ocean Grove Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind Auxiliary for a number of years and organiser for “Sunday Surprise” – an event held by the Uniting Church during Seniors month. This involved preparing lunch and afternoon tea for 100 seniors, and co-ordinating a concert held in the church. I did this for five years running! Lastly, but not least, I was Secretary for the Ocean Grove Indoor Bowls Committee for a number of years until Indoor Bowls finished last year due to the new extensions to Club Grove. My day to day routine varies, depending on what day it is. Monday is washing day, and the need to do the Church banking, and check the Post Office for Church mail. Then if it is not School holidays, there is CRE in the afternoon and RSL on the 3rd Monday of the month if I am able to attend. Tuesday – my day for the Seniors. First Tuesday of the month is a Sausage Sizzle, so myself and another lady are at the Club early preparing the free lunch. For Winter we are having Sausages, rissoles, peas, carrots and baby potatoes topped off with onion gravy. In the

afternoon I play Indoor Bowls. A game I really enjoy. Wednesday is housework morning unless it is the 4th Wednesday when it is Stamp Club. Thursday I take Mum to Craft at the Church and usually spend that couple of hours working in the office. Friday mornings are spent at the Church preparing the weekly newsletter, answering phone calls, possibly booking weddings and doing general office duties. Saturday and Sunday are usually times when I do things for myself, such as gardening, working on my stamp collection, watching the Cats play if the game is being televised and catching up with my mail. As part of my hobby with stamps, I write and exchange stamps with about 6 people worldwide, so I am not happy that the postage has gone up!! You must remember that in between all these weekly duties, I also attend meetings in the evenings and afternoons, help serve refreshments after funerals held at the church when arranged, work the sound system and help with weddings at the church when booked, cook all the meals at home, do the shopping, clean the house and drive Mum to whatever appointments she has. This week I have to take my Mum to the dentist on Monday, prepare food for the Senior Citizens Club members Sausage Sizzle on Tuesday, serve tea and coffee after a funeral
at the Church on Wednesday, work in the morning preparing the newsletter, and be at the church at 3.00pm for a wedding rehearsal on Friday. Meet a lady at the Seniors Club for a hiring of the hall for a child’s birthday party on Saturday morning at 11am and be at the Church for the wedding at 2pm Saturday afternoon. Then it is church on Sunday, where I prepare the banking and various other duties. Although we are in desperate need of more public transport and a greater awareness of what a bigger community will need such as schools, doctors, child care, needs of the elderly etc, I do think that Ocean Grove is heading the right way. It is still a community where you can walk down the street and meet a lot of people you know. The Voice is a great free paper that delivers news about our Community in a very informative way and I wouldn’t change a thing about it. If I could open a shop in Ocean Grove I would sell stamps of course. That is only because I am an avid philatelist who dislikes driving to Geelong. My favourite part of Ocean Grove are both the beach and my home in Thacker Street because there are no houses opposite it. If I wasn’t living in Ocean Grove, I would be back in Northern NSW as the weather is great and I enjoyed living in the hills.

Pictured: John Norton and his Ultralight.
ON the right day, with the right wind you may see John Norton flying high above Ocean Grove. The 61 year old has dreamt of soaring through the air since he was an imaginative child growing up near Essendon Airport. “I used to dream of flying most nights for quite a few years,” he said “I would do a swallow dive off the chimney and then I would start swimming in the air.” He finally found his way up into the air 15 years ago when he became a qualified hang glider and then made the progression seven years ago to a Weight Shift Ultralight craft. “To try and enhance the Ultralight I’ve actually done a towing course to tow up hang gliders” John prefers hang gliding to the Ultralight, explaining that hang gliding gives him the flying rush that he has sought since his childhood. Reminiscing on his first solo qualified flight over Lorne, John remembers the rush he felt. “When I landed, packed it up and went home I couldn’t sleep for three days.” However, he hasn’t glided for three years because the Ultralight is a more convenient hobby and with
its two seats, he can take his wife Kerry up. “Flying in the simplest terms is what I’ve always been interested in,” John said. “You can float around for an hour and you feel like you’ve been around the world, it’s pretty special.” Living in Ocean Grove, it’s easy for John to drive to the Barwon Heads airport where he takes off in the Ultralight and flies up and down the local coast. “As far as an area with so much variety… you’ve got the Heads, you got all this golden beach, you got the beautiful river here to Connewarre and of course going down to Lorne.” John’s passion for flight goes hand in hand with the other two things he loves to do, photograph and write. The multitalented man is able to fly his ‘trike’ as well as take beautiful photos of his surroundings from over 500 ft in the air. He also enjoys taking photos of Ocean Grove from the sky with friends regularly asking
him to photograph their house. “It gives me a reason to fly, it gives me a reason to go somewhere, it’s a bit of a challenge.” He then comes down from a flight and translates the rush he gets from the trip into poems. His original poem, Stage Flight was written before he had his first glide and after his lessons he reread it and found it described exactly what he had wanted flying to be. While he hasn’t had any real near misses, John acknowledges that it’s a dangerous hobby but not any more than driving your car around the corner. “The only scary bit is when you’re coming into land, if you get hit by a thermal or whatever, you got to be ready, if you’re not ready you will get hurt,” he said. “I like stretching the boundaries but I don’t like going beyond the boundary to the point where you struggle to get back.” John knows his passion gives him the opportunity to see the world from a different perspective and believes that without that passion he would never have got off the ground. “I pinch myself every time I come up here, thank god every one doesn’t want to fly.”
Stage Flight “And I’ve always had the wonder why clouds and rain and thunder seem to dominate the vastness overheard But I’ve also loved the theory
but flyings kinda eerie Cos as a kid I used to try it off the shed.” By John Norton (continues)

PORTARLINGTON, at the tip of the spit jutting out into Port Phillip Bay, this once sleepy town is sleepy no more but on the verge of booming on the Bellarine Peninsula. The scenic drive into town is through the peninsula’s vineyard region, passing by award winning wineries such as the Kilgour and Bellarine estates. At the end you are greeted by a hilly town which gives an incomprehensible number of houses a sea view over the bay, which in Bellarine land terms, is real estate gold. Portarlington’s bay side is home to some of the Peninsula’s finest mussels, with the town attracting about 10,000 visitors to its own Mussel Festival every January. The most popular variety is the blue mussel found throughout Australia and the preferred type to be served in restaurants due to it‘s sweeter flavour. Travelling along the Geelong Portarlington road you lose count of the amount of shops
Ocean Grove Voice, July 14-27, 2010 - Page 11
R
selling the fresh seafood direct to the public. The town’s showpiece is its bay side frontage giving residents and visitors a picturesque view in any weather. Port’ is also the site of any Bellarine Peninsula town’s most important assets. The football, netball, tennis, sailing and bowls clubs are all within a stone’s thrown of the water, not to mention restaurants, parks and accommodation. Also close to the water is the Portarlington Flour Mill, a preserved piece of local history. The Bellarine Historical Society explains the need for the mill’s creation at the port town in 1857 to carry flour to Melbourne and Tasmania. It only lasted as a flour mill for 17 years and then had other uses including as a brickworks and for insulation production. The mill was handed over to the National Trust in the 70s
and later opened as a museum run by volunteers. Continuing along the Portarlington Road until it turns into Newcombe Street, you’ll find yourself in the bustling main shopping area of town. There are countless places to eat, grab a coffee or a glass of wine but on a rainy, winters day midweek, everyone seems to be heading in the same direction for lunch. The town has two great bakeries - Wombats and the Portarlington Bakehouse. The Bakehouse is a cosy weatherboard shop which local Bronwyn Anfruns describes as her favourite place to have a quick coffee and an easy lunch. “I love it, there’s a little garden courtyard out the back and mum and I go there for a coffee or a chill out,” she said. Portarlington is one of the Peninsula’s towns that has kept it’s small town charm but still offers so much to its permanent and temporary residents.

THE Probus Club of Ocean Grove has put out a call for new members. The Probus Club is a men’s club that has proudly stood for the past 20 years and believes that it has much to offer. “Our Club is the first formed Probus Club in Ocean Grove and provides a great opportunity for retired and semiretired men to meet with others in similar circumstances,” said club member Doug Gorwell. “We enjoy listening to excellent guest and club speakers who come from all walks of life.” Mr Gorwell said other Club interests include inter-club sports and visiting entertainment venues and other organisations of interest
to members. There are also opportunities to join with other clubs for outings and trips. “We’d like to draw attention to more recent residents to our area that we welcome new members and offer friendship and a great way to get to know people in the area. Probus does not take up a lot of time or money. The club meets for two hours on the first Tuesday of the month from 10am. After joining, the annual subscription is just $20 per year. “While we are a single gender club, we welcome the inclusion of wives and partners at regular functions throughout the year,” Mr Gorwell said. Youth art on show
The Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre will be hosting its third youth art show showcasing young local talent. The show, which operates every second year, targets young artists between 12 and 18 with categories from aerosol to photography. While opening night on Friday the 16th of July is open exclusively to the 120 invited guests including a range of politicians, police, artists, youth workers and community members; the general public is welcome to attend the show over the weekend. Nicki Dunne, co-ordinator at Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre, believes the event is important for Ocean Grove. “There is lots of young talent in the community and the show is an opportunity to showcase this talent. The exhibition exposes youth art in a positive way, encouraging young people to get involved and showing that their art is not just vandalism.” Nicki believes that Ocean Grove is an artistic community and that there are many opportunities arising for artists, “Since OGAN (Ocean Grove Arts Network) has been created there have been lots more opportunities for artists. OGAN holds a youth art show every year and across the peninsula more galleries are opening.” Categories in the show include aerosol, painting, drawing, graphic art, sculpture and photography. The winners of the art show will be judged by local artists Bill Linford and Nick Lloyd. The overall winner of the art show will receive a cash prize of $200. The winner of each category receives $100. Second prize in each category will also be a cash prize, while third prize will be a product or voucher. Winners will be announced on opening night. The Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre Youth Art Show runs from Friday 16thSunday 18th of July at the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre.

Healthy habits Who is Ocean Grove’s for the winter Master Chef? EXERCISE in winter is difficult. We all know how hard it is to pull ourselves out of our warm beds, put on some running shoes and go for a run at 6am, but it doesn’t always have to be so hard. According to Sam Read and Elise Henry from Ocean Grove’s Contours fitness centre if we work together with friends when exercising, we are much more likely to be motivated because we don’t want to let them down. “Goal setting is another motivator; this may be having a target fitness level for a holiday or special event,” said Sam. “It doesn’t matter what time of the day we choose to exercise,” said Sam and Elise, “Mentally, however, it is often easier to exercise in the morning so we are not tempted to put it off throughout the day. Cardio is the best form of exercise in winter, although resistance training is also important. Cardio warms us up quickly, is less likely to cause injury and reduces body fat and calories.” What about our tendency to
eat more as the temperature drops? “It is still important to maintain a balanced diet,” said Sam and Elise, “It is also good to remember that we gain more nutritional value from raw fruit and vegetables rather than cooked. High protein diets are also great for fitness, health and reducing body fat.” Unfortunately, we can’t always prevent ourselves from getting sick, but we can do our best. Ashley Muffet, an intern pharmacist at Amcal Pharmacy Ocean Grove, said the best ways to prevent illness include washing hands regularly with antiseptic, maintaining clean surfaces in the home and workplace and avoiding close contact with sick people. Ashley said, “The immune system is also reduced when we are stressed, making us more susceptible to infection.” So it is important to attempt to keep stress levels low, whether through regular exercise, relaxation activities such as yoga or making extra time to socialise. By Sophie Bousted.
Sophie Bousted asked the question...
Terry Hamilton, 60, Waurn Ponds, said “The chef at Bardeli.” Lin Bassett, 64, Ocean Grove, said “I go to lots of restaurants, but I like the food at the Ocean Grove Golf Club the best.” Ken Bermingeham, Leopold, Retired, said “The chef at The Sportsman’s Club in Leopold. Ocean Grove is too expensive.”
Mary-Jane Wells, 18, Ocean Grove, said “The Olive Pit’s chef Cookie.”
Josh Moore, 17, Ocean Grove, said “I like the food at Oakdene.”
Gluten-free on menu BARDELI has launched a glutenfree menu to cater to increasing numbers of individuals suffering from coeliac disease or wheat sensitivity. Bardeli chef Kerry Maxwell said she noticed a large gap in the market for quality food for those with the condition. Kerry said, “Those suffering from gluten-intolerance are often missing out on quality food. “Our menu preserves taste
without compromising quality.” Coeliac disease, a genetic disease, can lead to serious complications such as bowel cancer, anaemia, osteoporosis and miscarriage. Bardeli joins The Olive Pit, Ocean Grove Pizza and Pasta, Go Vita Health Food Shop, The Dunes and Blue Fin Café in offering gluten-free food to Ocean Grove. Contact us if your food establishment also offers glutenfree options.

Quality fusion of styles BeachHouse Barwon Heads has been operational for over two-and-a-half years, in the once Barwon Heads fire station. This beautifully renovated venue is a fusion of café and restaurant styles. A relaxed café environment during the day, serving the town’s best coffee, makes way for magnificent modern Australian cuisine and a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience in the evening hours. BeachHouse Barwon Heads prides itself on its friendly service, constant quality of food, and affordable and extensive wine list, which has a number of local wines on display.
The kitchen staff, lead by Ashley Cargill and Rick Howarth, aim to provide fresh and tasty dishes, with the signature dish a tie between the local black Portarlington mussels, which are currently being steamed in a Pernod, tomato, saffron & garlic broth, and the dry aged Black Angus Porterhouse steak.
Leanne Andrew expanded the space with the inclusion of a private function room. This room caters for up to 35 people sitting down, or up to 50 people for a cocktail style function. Such a great sized room for your birthday, engagement or end-of-year work celebrations.
During the lunch hours, Monday to Saturday, BeachHouse Barwon Heads has a fantastic 2 course lunch special available for only $25. This includes an entree of either soup or a chef’s tapas plate, a choice of three mains, and a glass of wine or pot of tap beer.

Wagging class a hit LOCALS had the chance to take part in free animal education workshops last week, writes Sophie Bousted. The workshops were organised by the City of Greater Geelong at the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club and run by renowned animal training specialists Craig and Tracey Murray from Queensland. They were aimed to teach people to gain control of their pets, select the right pet and be a responsible pet owner. Craig and Tracey Murray work in a variety of areas in the field from training puppies, and re-conditioning fears in dogs with phobias to finding lost children, murder victims and being employed in court cases involving dangerous dogs. Craig has trained dogs in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the USA. Craig Murray, who has become known as a “miracle worker” in the dog training
world, said “The most important thing in being a responsible pet owner is treating the dog as a dog. No species can be treated as another species.” According to Craig and Tracey, being a good dog owner doesn’t mean being “harsh, horrible and inhumane”, but being credible and consistent. “The problem does not lie with the dog, but with the owner.” The workshops in Ocean Grove have been very successful, with 9 out of the 9 dogs that Tracey and Craig have met so far having their behavioural problems fixed on the spot. Problems have ranged from a lack of socialisation at a young age to incorrect training. “The purpose of the workshop is to get people to work their dog like a dog and to treat their dog like a dog, not a person.” The Observe and Learn Workshop got a positive response from the public.
Matt and Rohan Crawley, Ocean Grove, with their Cavalier King Charles Harry, said they hoped to teach their dog to “Learn commands, be more obedient and not to scratch at the door.”
Walkies! Locals took the chance to be involved in a free animal workshop.
Jo Stanton, Hamlyn Heights, with Border collie Alice, said “The main things that I learnt were that we need to understand the way the dog thinks. We need to be consistent with the dog. I also learnt how to deal with the recall issues that I have with Alice.” Pictures: SOPHIE BOUSTED.
Jessica and Sean Harper, Ocean Grove, with their Gordan Setter Tilly, said “We learnt that you have to be responsible and persistent and that when you squirt your dog with a water gun it will back off.”

Silver with a splash of winter colour This Silvereye pictured above was photographed in the bushes near the ‘Dunes’ restaurant.
photography
THE Silvereye is a tiny bird that has a distinctive ring of white feathers around the eye. This bird grows to 10-12 cm in length and is sometimes also called a 'White eye'. Silvereyes are found in Eastern Australia, from Cape York all the way to Western Australia and Tasmania. They are also found on Pacific Islands such as Lord Howe Island,
New Caledonia and Fiji. However, they are not found in the Northern Territory. Silvereyes migrate to warmer climates during the autumn, and then they move back to southern regions in late winter for the breeding season. Even though the birds are tiny they have been tracked flying from Tasmania all the way to Northern Queensland when they migrate!
Wow that is some journey, it’s hard to drive that far let alone fly! They live in any wooded habitat, including urban parks and gardens. Besides having white feathers around their eyes, the Silvereye has a mixture of olive- green, grey, yellow and rusty feathers- they are a lovely splash of colour on a dull day! They feed on insects, fruit and nectar. They form large flocks
during the winter months and may cause orchard owners a few headaches if they decide to eat their produce! The breeding season lasts from August to February. Both sexes build the nest and look after the young hatchlings. A breeding pair can raise up to three clutches of chicks each breeding season. By Jennifer Carr

BARWON COAST
Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. Centre Toilet Block, Ocean Grove – Update Barwon Coast has commenced its largest ever self funded project with the redevelopment of the Ocean Grove Main Beach amenity block. This project is the last major component of the Ocean Grove Main beach redevelopment project commenced a decade ago. Local builders Burchell Constructions P/L have been appointed to construct the new amenity block with completion within 100 working days ie before the 2010/11 summer. The overall project cost including demolition and relocation of services will be close to $1million funded thru the successful operations of our two major caravan parks in Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove. No contribution from the local community, nor the municipality is required to deliver this substantial infrastructure development that will serve the growing population of Ocean Grove and increasing numbers of visitors. Work to date includes the demolition of the existing amenity block constructed in 1978 , all subsurface plumbing and drainage works pouring of the foundations and concrete slab and the commencement of the timber and steel framing. You may have noticed the very large excavation on site in preparation for the construction of a 100,000 litre underground tank to collect rainwater harvested from the roof and paved concourse. The concrete tank was constructed on site (poured in situ) and will now cure for a few weeks before backfilling commences. The 100,000 litre tank should provide for 70% of the peak season water used for toilet flushing. Budgets 2010-11 As regularly noted in this column, the vast majority of works carried out by Barwon Coast are fully funded from our caravan park operations with the occasional major grant funding for works such as the replacement of the Ocean Grove seawall and promenade in 2009. The budgeted revenue from the operation of our caravan parks and accommodation units will exceed $4m for the first time with total revenue in excess of $4.15m. Net revenue from those operations is budgeted to exceed $2.2m allowing an investment of $1m into your coastal environment for revegetation, pest plant and animal programs; public presentation of reserves, toilet block maintenance, provision of BBQ’s and beach access tracks, rubbish and recycling services, public playgrounds etc. Additionally over $0.5m is provided for new capital works. Interestingly the 6 week operation of the unpowered Riverside Camping Ground on the Ocean
Grove Spit generates a net income in excess of $100k Major capital works for the year include the Ocean Grove Main Beach Toilet block referred to above and the replacement of a toilet block within the Barwon Heads Caravan Park. Whales It has been wonderful to see the number of Southern Right whales around over the past few weeks. Almost everyday there is a sighting mostly off 13th Beach however the presence of a whale and calf close to the main beach in Ocean Grove gave a wonderful opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures. Works on the Ocean Grove Spit Over the next few months a great deal of activity will be observed on the river side of the Ocean Grove Spit but these works have nothing to do with the Draft Masterplan for the Spit released in January 2010 The works relate to the next stage of Barwon Water’s sewer main replacement program from Pt Lonsdale thru to Black Rock. Two projects are proposed to be undertaken over the next 4 months being the boring under the Barwon River to take the new sewer main from Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads and the construction of a new sewer main thru the Spit from the south end of the Riverview Family Caravan Park to the point when the river boring project will commence. During this time there will be considerable interruption to those walking, cycling along the trails thru the Spit and temporary diversions are planned. Signage is likely to be erected in coming weeks advising of the works to be undertaken. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager Barwon Coast, Ewing Blyth Drive, Barwon Heads office@barwoncoast.com.au

THE combination of Eddie Ellwood and Richard Peters may prove pivotal as the jewel in the crown for the 2010/11 season as the Collendina Cricket Club attempts to defend its A-Grade premiership. Ellwood, who was appointed in a non-playing coaching role, and Peters, in a playing role, were announced as joint co-coach at club’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday June 20. Ellwood and Peters take over the coaching reigns from Kade Norquay, who will stay on as A-Grade captain for the Cobras.
“We have some quality junior players coming through, so it is an important time for the club,” Ellwood said. “The Collendina area is getting bigger, so we always welcome new players to the club.” Seven applicants applied for the coveted Collendina Cricket Club coaching role, including a former test cricketer from Pakistan. “We had lot of interest in
the coaching role, not just locally but overseas as well,” Collendina Cricket club stalwart Leigh Norquay said. Geelong’s AFL Brownlow Medalist Jimmy Bartel has even managed to don the whites in the past two seasons for the A-Grade Cobras. In March, Collendina’s A-Grade team won its first Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association (BPCA) premiership defeating Queenscliff. Collendina Cobras is once again fielding a disabled cricket team, for details contact Leigh Norquay on 0418 325 547.

LOCAL Ocean Grove golf sensation Tyron Cover is on a high after taking out the Junior Curlewis Open earlier this month. Cover, who won the Ocean Grove Golf Club and Junior Championship in May, shot a one over par 73 to defeat Tyler Fent from Commonwealth Golf Club by two strokes who shot a three over 75. The Bellarine Peninsula junior golf event attracted competitors from 15 different clubs including wellknown Melbourne-based golf clubs including Huntingdale, Sanctuary Lakes, Kingswood, Kooringal, Commonwealth and Rosanna. “I was playing alright, but I wasn’t expecting to win,” Tyron said last week. The Curlewis Open is a part of the junior state wide golf circuit.
Ocean Grove tennis club’s new light upgrade
WORKS on Ocean Grove Tennis Club’s $50,000 new lights upgrade are expected to be completed by the end of the week. Ocean Grove Tennis Club president Steve Vicary said the project which commenced two months ago, acknowledged the hard work of its loyal club members. The $50,000 upgrade was entirely funded by the club. “The fundraising was done through BBQ’s and Thursday night competitions and other general fundraising efforts throughout the club,” Vicary said. The Ocean Grove Tennis Club, home to 350 members, is understood to be one of the biggest clubs in the wider Geelong region in terms of its membership numbers. Vicary said the members had already noticed the positive effects playing under the new light upgrade. “The old lights you could hardly see, the new lights are 50 per cent brighter, so you will be able to see the ball better at night,” Vicary said. Meanwhile the Ocean Grove Tennis Club will hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) next month. The AGM will take place on Monday August 16 at 7:30pm.
Grove pair return from Youth Championships
5255 5884 65 The Terrace, Ocean Grove
VICTORIAN Under 17 soccer representatives Clare Duck and Renee Zebic have returned home from the 2010 FFA National Youth Championships in Coffs Harbour. The pair who live locally in Ocean Grove, were part of the final squad that headed to Coffs Harbour for the week long round robin event. Rising star grabs attention OCEAN Grove Primary School student Alex Witherden is a promising young footballer on the rise. The bubbly 11-year-old was fortunate enough to recently win selection in the Under 12 Victorian Schoolboys team. Although a Wallington resident, young Alex has proven to be a versatile performer on the ground playing in a number of different positions. Already he has lined up as ruck rover, wing and the half forward flank. The Grade-six student who joins a squad of 23, heads to Perth this month for the School Sport Australia AFL Championships. “I can’t wait,” an enthused Alex said. “It is the most exciting
thing to ever have happened in my life.” Last month Alex played in a practice match for Victoria at Trinity Grammar in the Melbourne suburb of Bulleen. Proud father Brad believes it was a terrific achievement given the hundreds of youngsters who have tried out to have the honour of representing Victoria at a junior level. He said the tough selection criteria, meant his son could ill afford to have an off game in tryouts and at practice matches prior to the AFL Championships. “It is great to see he is showing his talent,” Brad said. “He has made the cut – you can’t have a bad game
otherwise you will miss out. “He is solidly built for his age.” This season Alex, who plays Under 14’s for Barwon Heads, remains undaunted with the task of taking on players two years his senior. The ambitious adolescent is still eligible to play Under 12’s, but is keen to play in the best local competition available. He is somewhat a trendsetter convincing some of his school mates at Ocean Grove Primary School to make the move to Barwon Heads Football Club and play in a higher junior grade. The North Melbourne supporter, rates on-baller Brent Harvey as his favourite player.

Wade ‘Chooka’ Piec steps up to kick one of five majors against Newcomb on Saturday.
OCEAN Grove's reserves grade are on track for another tilt at a premiership in 2010. The second-placed Grubbers (9 wins, 3 losses, 1 draw) who won flags in 2007 and 2009, defeated cellar dweller Newcomb by 66 points. Final scores were Ocean Grove 13.13.91 to Newcomb 3.7.25. In other news the Under 18 Grubbers 9.21.75, coached by Matt Tyrrell, defeated Bell Park 2.4.16 by 59 points. The junior Grubbers sit in second position with a 10-3 record and remain three games below ladder leaders Drysdale.

Next step Battle of the Bridge
Grubb’s Edging closer THE Grubbers are edging closer towards a finals berth as the Bellarine Football League season reaches a thrilling climax. Ocean Grove’s (7-6) hardfought 60-point win over Newcomb on Saturday means there is only one game between them and Anglesea, who are now expected to battle it out for the prized fifth position. In favour for the Grubbers (119.57%) is their much healthier percentage than the fifth-placed Kangaroos (91.35%). Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor impressed with his team’s 10-goal third quarter blitz, arguably the Grubbers’ best term in 2010, which tore the game apart against the winless Power. The home side, who kicked with the aid of an advantageous breeze in the third quarter, led by 82 points at the last break. “We played a good first quarter, we just didn’t capitalise with goals on the scoreboard,” McGregor said. “The second quarter we worked really hard into the breeze, it is tough when the wind is this strong.
“The third (term) was our best quarter all year – we moved the ball really well we didn’t just blaze at the goals and we came back through the corridor.” Veteran Grubber big man Wayde ‘Chooka’ Piec, playing in his first senior match since Round three, was the catalyst in the victory, booting five goals against the Power. McGregor said Piec’s new role as a permanent forward meant he could become a focal point for the Grubbers. “Having a big target (Piec) is what we have lacked,” he said. “We have some good small players running around, but we don’t have many big guys, so having the luxury of Piec out there was good.” Emerging youngster Harrison Foott also continued his impressive season to date proving too strong and tall for his Newcomb’s opponents.
Sparkling utility Dave Gray, who booted two majors, bustling defender Sam Van Deuren and three goals from the versatile Tom McManus all played significant roles in their return from injury. The only sour news was an ankle injury to Daniel Maloney, but the Grubbers may regain dynamic defender Ryan Baker who is expected to return in the coming weeks from a calf injury. Ocean Grove’s focus now turns to Barwon Heads for the traditional Battle of the Bridge clash. The Grubbers won their last encounter against the Seagulls in round five by 52 points. “We can control our own destiny and that is winning games of footy coming up,” McGregor said. “We have got Barwon Heads this week, it is rivalry round and it is Battle of the Bridge and the (Seagulls) would love to knock Ocean Grove out of the finals and they will be up and about.” The game starts at 2:10pm at Howard Harmer Oval in Barwon Heads on Saturday July 17.
