CHEESEMAN CALLS ON BAILLIEU TO CHIP IN

SHELL OUT FEDERAL MP, Darren Cheeseman,

has called on the new Victorian Government to make the Shell Road Sports Precinct a priority and match the Federal Labor Government’s $2 million contribution.

Cheeseman made his comments after a Coalition Government took over without making a commitment to the desperately needed Grove project.

Although unsuccessful, Liberal candidate Kurt Reiter did take time to visit and listen to local viewpoints.

However, he was unable to deliver an election pledge on the project.

Lisa Neville promised $5m and although she was re-elected - her party wasn’t.

“This project as it has been planned, which has a total cost of over $6 million, is now at risk,” Darren Cheeseman said.

“The Gillard (Federal) Government has promised a contribution of $2 million.

Our contribution is unconditional and we will provide that amount.”

“I believe this is the most important sport and recreational precinct on the Bellarine Peninsula, and this is something I have championed for the community where we want a first-class

result.”

“The issue is now whether we get an important regional-level project, or a glorified tin shed.”

“I believe all levels of Government should be contributing to get an outcome that will last the community for two or three decades to come.”

Cheeseman said that if the Victorian Government is serious about community health and fighting things such as childhood obesity, investing in sports and recreation facilities was an absolute priority, which actually saves money in the long run.

“The best way to fight childhood obesity is to get kids active and involved in community sport. It’s the old adage of prevention is better than cure, and that’s socially and financially in my book.”

“The Shell Road Precinct upgrade will help the footy club, the netball club, the soccer and cricket clubs and other sports to increase their levels of participation.”

“All these Clubs do a tremendous job in getting kids involved and keeping them healthy, and I am urging the new Victorian Government to match the commitment that the Gillard Government has shown.”

Homes still on the up LOCAL average property prices continue to climb as indicated in the latest Victorian Property Sales Report, writes Carly Helweg.

Ocean Grove has maintained a strong real estate presence on the Bellarine Peninsula due to a high demand for property in the area.

According to the sales report, released by the Victorian Government, there was a large increase in median (average) unit prices in Ocean Grove since the April-June 2009 quarter until the same

quarter of this year with a 38.5 per cent jump.

Median house and land prices have also increased over the year with a 5.1 and 11.3 per cent increase respectively.

Sales agent from Kerley's Coastal Real Estate, Susan Potts said that prices were increasing due to the demand for houses and especially land around Ocean Grove.

“Definitely, I'd say in the main there is a shortage of available land that has seen land prices driven up,” Susan said.

However Susan believes

the figures in the Sales Report might imply a greater rise than actual.

She said house and land prices have all increased due to lack of availability and high demand but in her experience, hasn’t indicated up to a 38.5 per cent median price rise in 2009/2010 period.

“Over 30 per cent seems a bit weird, there's not a lot of units but an expensive townhouse might drive the average up,” she said.

The sales report also shows average price increases in the high

tourism times of January to March in 2010 for both houses and units.

Despite seasonal influences on tourism and people influx into Ocean Grove during this quarter, Susan said this doesn't necessarily reflect in real estate numbers as Ocean Grove has strong sales throughout the year.

“Ocean Grove is a robust market, it’s a market that works all year round,” she said.“It’s not as seasonal as people might think, Ocean Grove is a vibrant town and the demand is ongoing.”

$8.5k raised Barwon Coast, designers and builders at the opening of the new toilet and changing facilities at Main Beach.

Flushed with success OCEAN Grove resident Mark Edmonds had the honour of declaring the new $1m Main Beach toilet and changing block officially open earlier this month.

Mr Edmonds is chairman of local foreshore managers Barwon Coast.

At the low-key opening Barwon Coast’s general manager Bob Jordan noted that the project and associated landscape works had been totally funded by the

organisation’s successful operation of its two major caravan parks, Riverview and Barwon Heads.

The new amenity block replaced the previous 1960s building and provides 11 toilets, four showers, eight wash basins, a urinal and two changing rooms.

Mr Edmonds complemented the builders Burchell Construction on completing the new building on time and on budget and said that the design by Baade

Van Loons is top nursery

He particularly highlighted the provision of two full fitted cubicles to meet the needs of people with physical disabilities.

It includes doorways wide enough for the DSA beach wheelchairs.

Mr Jordan commented that the completion of the amenity block brings to an end the ten-year-plan

to upgrade the facilities on the Ocean Grove foreshore that started with the relocation of Surf Beach Road to the back of the coastal reserve, thereby ensuring that beach visitors using the car parks no longer had to cross the road to get to the beach.

Other major works have included the $1.2m rebuild of the seawall, a disabled ramp, promenade, rotunda renovation and barbecue area.

Ocean Grove artist Jenny McLachlan’s charity art sale raised an impressive $8,500 for Alstrom Syndrome International.

Over 100 people attended the exhibition over the last weekend in November held at Café Silk in Geelong.

Jenny said she sold out of all her 55 pieces and collected over $2000 from donations at the door.

“I can’t take the smile off my face, it’s more than what I could have wished for,” Jenny’s son Heath passed away from the rare genetic disease, Alstrom Syndrome in 2005 aged 23.

Jenny now uses her art to keep Heath’s memory alive and to fundraise for others living with the disease.

1 and the second will be Up on January 15.

The events will start at 7pm and feature free face painting, balloon twisters, and plenty of food and refreshments including a sausage sizzle, popcorn, fairly floss, coffees, slushies and cold drinks.

The films will begin at 9pm and run for about an hour and three quarters.

As said this is a FREE EVENT with no charge for admission. Leave the car at home, bring a rug or deckchairs and enjoy a great family evening.

Blood counters AN Ocean Grove accounting business has helped to save the lives of people needing blood.

WHK were awarded winners of the Battle of the Suits Challenge between four accounting firms from Geelong and the Bellarine.

The blood donor competition ran from November 30 2009 until December 1 2010 with WHK employees giving blood 77 times potentially saving 231 lives.

Helen Butteriss and Claire Reiners from WHK’s Ocean Grove office took part in the competition taking advantage of the mobile blood bus that regularly parks at Shell Road.

HOME grown food, fresh air and hard work might just be the secret to a long life.

Dorothy Price, pictured above with a close friend, celebrated her 100th birthday on December 11 with friends and family.

The mother of two sons, grandmother to six and great grandmother to six said she didn’t want to make a fuss about her milestone birthday.

“Lots of people make it to 100 these days, its common,” she said.

Dorothy has been a resident at the TLC Residential Aged Care Home in Wallington for the past four years but grew up around Geelong and raised her own family in Belmont.

Peter said they need a significant level of interest and patience from the community for the project to go ahead as there is still a long way to go before they can plant the first seed.

“We need a significant and sustainable level of interest within the community, it takes quite a bit of red tape and people lose steam and interest drops away,” he said. “It’s about creating a community asset, something that’s visually appealing,” he said.

Two potential sites include behind the Ocean Grove Senior Citizens Hall on The Parade and at the southern end of Kingston Park.

City of Greater Geelong General Manager Community Services Linda Quinn said Council has had informal discussions with the Community Garden Planning Group.

OCEAN Grove Music School hosted their annual end of year concert last Thursday night, writes Carly Helweg.

Held at the Senior Citizens hall, the students had the chance to showcase their years work to friends and family.

The students ranging in primary and secondary school ages performed to over 90 people, some having as little as four lessons before bravely taking the stage.

Five students who recently had their Australia and New Zealand Cultural Arts Limited music exams also had their results and certificates handed out.

All students passed their exams with four recieving 'honours'.

LOCAL gardeners are being asked to put forward their interest in an Ocean Grove Community Garden.

Ocean Grove resident Peter Gumley believes the local community is lacking a garden space and has taken on a planning role for the project.

The planning group is designing a garden to give members a place for social interaction, learning or enhancing their gardening ability and to plant their own vegetables, fruit, flowers or herbs.

Peter said in this health conscious time many people want the opportunity to grow their own fresh food and with many people living in townhouses or apartments, may not get the opportunity.

“They can provide food of their own choice and be aware of its nutritional value,” he said.

Girls doing it for Malawi children A GIRLS Only afternoon helped raise $2,800 for the Mphatso Children’s Foundation n Malawi.

Run by volunteers the afternoon at the Wave included cooking demonstrations, a scone 'bake off' (judged by Jodie 'granny' McDonald, Geoff Trevaskis and Robyn Casey), the sale of Malawian craft, a silent auction, an amazing afternoon tea and the sale of their 2011 calendars.

Robyn Casey talked about the situation and need in Malawi and others compared daily life for Malawian women and Australian women.

Market now in full swing OCEAN Grove Community Market has now run three weekends this ‘summer’ season and continues to pull in a huge range of stallholders and community groups. Among the newest to take a pitch is the newly formed Ocean Grove Men’s Shed. The next markets are on Sunday January 2, Sunday February 6 and Sunday March 6. The final big Easter market is on Sunday April 3. All the markets are held at Kingston Park from 9am to 1pm.

Recipients of this, the second grant round in 2010, include the Ocean Grove Park Inc, the Ocean Grove RSL, the Surf Life Saving Club, Ocean Grove Disabled Surfers’ Association and the Ocean Grove Calisthenics Club.

“Our motto is that in Ocean Grove we help ourselves,” said Helen Butteriss. “Simply by nominating our Community Enterprise through your Bendigo Bank or Geelong

OCEAN Grove Community Enterprise donated a further $11,400 to local community groups and organisations.

Community Telco accounts, or GMHBA membership, those organisations provide money to the OGCE on your behalf.

“It’s really easy and it suits people who cannot or prefer not to donate time or money – the participating organisations

donate their money, not yours.”

The next grant round will focus on community groups that may otherwise struggle to access money to operate their community-based activity. Keep your eye out in the Voice for the next round of applications.

Donation is a life-changer A LOCAL health care therapist has helped pass on a generous gift to a family in need, writes Carly Helweg.

Indented Head couple Davina and Murray Moore are full time carers for their son Robert (affectionately known as Robbie) who has Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The-13-year-old has limited walking capabilities and has recently grown too big for his wheelchair requiring a new one. Bowan and Soft Tissue therapist, Ron

Phelan presented Robbie with his brand new wheelchair on December 1, donated through the Tom Bowen Legacy Trust Fund based in Geelong.

Established in 2003, the Trust Fund is a notfor profit organisation to provide funds to children with disabilities and help improve their quality of life.

Ron said an anonymous donor was able to raise about $1,000 in under two months to help purchase the chair for Robbie.

“He is a client of mine,

was told of what we were doing and was really inspired to help.”

Davina said they are extremely thankful for the new wheelchair especially as applying for grants through the hospital can be a drawn out process.

“Robbie’s grown out of his other chair and by the time we go back to the hospital and apply for the funding he’s grown out of (the new one),” she said.

Because Davina doesn’t drive, she and Robbie have to attend their medical appointments

OCEAN Grove Community Enterprise has timed its latest grant round with Christmas, to provide bonuses for five more businesses in Ocean Grove.

Newly appointed Chair, Helen Butteriss, was delighted to announce the recipients at an official presentation at the Bendigo Bank on Friday 10 December. The grants totalled more than $11,000.

Helen said, “We decided to rebound from the disappointment of a rained-out community showcase picnic and join Santa in distributing good wishes and cash at Christmas time!” Helen takes over from inaugural Chair of

Crowd rewarded AS if by a miracle Ocean Grove Carols in the Park not only survived the weather but attracted arguably one of its largest crowds on record.

Although the organisers put their heads down and continued preparing the site for the 7.30pm start, essentials like the sausage supplies were left until the very last minute. That’s how cautious they were on Sunday afternoon.

But once the music began to play, the crowds swarmed in undeterred by the previous 24 wretched Victorian hours.

The energy of organiser Jon Mamonski, the mellowing voice of Mark Hyland MC’ing and the melting sound of primary school kids singing carols and somehow Ocean Grove Carols in the Park started to take on a more summery feel. That was confirmed not just by those little bitey creatures, but by the lifting spirits among those who had been rewarded for braving the night that really should never have been.

I cannot believe that we are at the end of another year. Over the past few weeks I have had the chance to reflect on everything the centre has achieved during 2010. I am pleased to report to you that we have achieved what we set out to do plus more. The Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre has grown and developed over the past 12 months, making us one of the leading centres in the State. With over 10 accredited courses on our scope of registration, our youth program, 130 hobby and general interest or health courses programmed quarterly, the vacation care program, our support groups, community development projects and computer classes we have certainly meet all of our goals and provide local training for local community members.

The centre close down period for XMAS is Thursday the 16th December 2010 and we will re open on Monday 10th January 2011.

School holiday program will run for 3 weeks when we re-open.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a merry xmas and a safe new year and we hope to see you at your local learning centre in 2011.

MELLOW sounds, great food and plenty to browse – it’s the Tranquility Fair next month and a time to unwind and chill out.

This year’s fair – the 13th – will take place on Saturday January 8 from 10am to 4pm and it aims to provide the community and holidaymakers with a festival of food, craft and pampering, rides and fun for the kids, along with an awesome line up of live music.

The line up this year includes The Band Who Knew Too Much, Rebecca Barnard, Asha Bollywood Dance and Workshop, The Scion Pirates and Steve McEwan & the Yesmen.

Stalls include jewellery, clothing, handcrafts, fresh produce, olive oil and honey, books and videos, model cars, plants and drums.

Kids fun goes from a chair-o-plane, camel rides and train rides to face painting, temporary tattoos and arts and crafts.

The food is international – Tibetan, Italian and Dutch as well as yabbi pies, yoghurts and a chocolate fountain.

The fair opens at 10am and runs to 4pm.

Entry is $3 per person, under 12s just a smile. Proceeds raised go to the improvement of Ocean Grove Park.

Word of mouth had worked well when the Adam Parsons Project landed at the Ocean Grove Hotel this week.

The band, comprising of Adam Parsons (Guitar, Lead Vocals, Keyboards), Greg Southall (Bass), Roy Green (Guitar, Backup Vocals) and Adam Giles (Drums, Percussion), performed both popular and little known Pink Floyd covers with songs such as Money and the Great Gig in the Sky going down well.

Tegan Rose Smith provided the vocals for "Great Gig In The Sky", while Robert Calvert was invited to play saxophone. If you had

closed your eyes you would be forgiven for thinking that you were at a Pink Floyd concert, especially upon hearing the vocals on Us and Them which attracted a round of applause.

When the audience was invited to sing along to Wish You Were Here, there was not a closed mouth in the audience. The encore of Another Brick in the Wall had the punters yelling for more. Sadly this was not to be as the pigs had flown. As tribute bands go, the Adam Parsons Project is Pink Floyd replicated.

Best play nomination In The Voice in April of this year we reported on the eight past and present residents of Ocean Grove who were performing in Geelong Repertory Theatre Company’s production of the modern Irish comedy The Cripple of Inishmaan at the Woodbin Theatre, West Geelong.

We can now report that The Cripple of Inishmaan exceeded all expectations. The play received a nomination for the best play in Geelong in 2010 from Entertainment Geelong in their short list of Virtual Oscar nominations.

Bryan Eaton and Ubaldino Mantelli were nominated in the Best Male Lead Actor category for their roles in the play and two other members of the cast Maddie Field and Mary Steuten received nominations in the Best Supporting Female Actor category. The Virtual Oscars from Entertainment Geelong went to

Bryan Eaton for his role as Johnnypateenmike and Maddie Field for her role as Helen McCormick.

In the Victorian Drama League (VDL) Awards, The Cripple of Inishmaan received a whopping nine nominations at the awards ceremony in Melbourne on December 5. Among these were Ocean Grovers Patsy Sanaghan and Jon Pedlar who received nominations for best comedy actor in a minor role and Bryan Eaton for Best Comedy Actor in a leading role.

Nominations were also received for best comedy and Jon Pedlar and Judy Thomson received nominations for best director of a comedy production.

The VDL award for Best Actor in a comedy role in Victoria in 2010 went to Bryan Eaton for his portrayal as Inishmaan’s gossip, Johnnypateenmike.

Birds along the Barwon River THE stretch of Barwon River from the Riverview Family Caravan Park to the Ocean Grove Golf Club and Boat Ramp is currently alive with beautiful birds, including some of the thousands of migratory birds that visit Lake Connewarre each year.

How lucky are we to have this on our doorstep?

This area is part of the Lake Connewarre State Game Reserve. which is listed as a Wetland of International importance under the Ramsar convention.

The Ramsar Convention (signed in 1971) is also known as 'The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance'. It is an intergovernmental treaty that provides a framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.

The Ramsar Convention is the only global environmental treaty that deals with a particular ecosystem, and the Convention's member countries cover all geographic regions of the planet. This agreement commits the Australian and Victorian governments to conserving the habitats of migratory birds.

only trees able to survive the salty conditions of the Barwon estuary (an estuary is a wide part of a river where it meets the sea). Estuaries are places where freshwater from a river mixes with saltwater from the sea, so animals and plants have to adapt to survive in both conditions. The roots of the mangroves reduce erosion around the shoreline and provide shelter for fish and other small marine animals.

Birds found all year around the Barwon River Estuary include Royal Spoonbills, Yellow Billed Spoonbills, Royal Ibis, Pelicans, Cormorants, Pacific Gulls and Silver Gulls.

Some of the birds I have spotted lately along the Barwon River include:

Barwon Caspian.

1. Pied Oyster Catcher This is a black and white bird, 48 cms in length, with a long orange bill, long orange legs, and a red eye.

They use their bills to open shells or bivalve molluscs to feed on the shell fish inside.

They also eat worms, insects and crustaceans. They are found throughout Australia except around the Great Australian Bight where there is no beach to live on (just kilometres of cliff faces). Their numbers have been slowly declining, probably because they nest on the beach or on sandbars.

2. Common Greenshank This is a large (30cms) wader bird, with a dark grey neck and pale chest and tail. The large, curved bill is dark grey,

and they have yellow legs.

They feed on insects, worms, molluscs, small fish, and crustaceans. Greenshanks are commonly found in estuaries, swamps and lagoons.

They breed in the Paleartic region of the world which includes Europe, Asia north of the Himalaya foothills, northern Africa, and the northern and central parts of the Arabian Peninsula. They migrate to Australia from August to November each year. They stay in Australia until March and April, then return to their Northern breeding grounds.

3. Bar-tailed Godwit BarTailed Godwits are large (37cms) wader birds. They are brown above and have lighter feathers underneath.

Play it safe by the water As we move into our summer beach season it is important to always swim between the

flags at our locally patrolled beaches - Ocean Grove and 13th Beach where Life Savers & Lifeguards will be on patrol.

We are again funding the provision of lifeguards at the beach to the east of RAAF’s (18W) on the Ocean Grove Spit as an alternative to the Ocean Grove Main Beach and being close to the Riverside Camping Area. We are also funding the provision of an additional Lifeguard at the Ocean Grove Main Beach At all beach access pathways we have installed Beach Safety Signs that provide advice on general water conditions, rocks, tide etc and where the nearest patrolled beach is. Please take time to read those notices.

Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area.

We are delighted to announce that our new $1m amenity block project at the Ocean Grove Main Beach has been completed and is now open This is our largest ever self funded project and is the last major component of the Ocean Grove Main beach redevelopment project we commenced a decade ago starting with the relocation of the Surf Beach Road to the back of the coastal reserve, improving beach access safety for all visitors.

The amenity block occupies a smaller and lower profile than the old block and incorporates a range of sustainable design features including the installation of an underground 100,000 litre tank that will collect rainwater from the roof and surrounding hard standing. That water will then be used for flushing the toilets thereby saving on the use of town water.

Two stand alone unisex toilets have been built for the use of persons of all abilities and their carers. Those toilets have exceptionally wide doors to enable those using the large wheel aquatic wheelchairs used during events such as the disables surfers carnival to gain access Adjacent to the amenity block are 2 disabled car parks and a ramp built at the required gradient to suit people in wheelchairs.

Godwits have a very long pinkish bill, that I'm sure must be difficult not to trip over!

Bar-Tailed Godwits arrive in Australia in August each year from breeding grounds as far away as Scandinavia, northern Asia and Alaska.They return to their breeding grounds in April and May. They feed on molluscs, worms and aquatic insects.

4/ Black-fronted Dotterel This is a small (16cms) wading bird with a black face and front, pink legs, red bill , red eye ring and brown mottled wings.

Dotterel are found throughout Australia in wetlands, lakes, rivers and swamps.

They are not often seen on the coast as they prefer fresh water. They eat insects and small molluscs.

When disturbed the Dotterel tends to run very swiftly before flying, and they are very light on their feet.

Imagine being 30 cms big and having the instinct and energy to fly from one side of the world to the other? Birds are incredible.

5/ Great Egret There are a pair of magestic Great Egrets living in the River. Great Egrets are white, with a yellow bill, black legs and yellow eye ring. They are 70 cms long. They prefer shallow flowing water. They eat mainly fish, but also small reptiles, molluscs, and insects.

I wonder why Lake Connewarre, which is an area of international importance for bird habitats, is also a 'game' reserve? How does this happen? Duck shooting seems such an unequal competition between a gentle and defenceless creature and a man with a gun. What is the sport in this? How many other birds get injured or maimed in the process?

What sort of 'Convention' leads to a wetland being named as internationally important and at the same time allows shooting? If anyone can explain this, they are a better man than me.

The free bus is operating from 26th December until 26th January commencing at 10am thru to 6pm with an hourly lap of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and the beaches.

Please remember that over the peak summer, the dog free beaches declaration come into effect with dogs prohibited along the entire Ocean Grove Beach (west of 13W Hodgson St), and the Barwon River beach from 18th December to 31st January From 13W (Hodgson St) east towards Collendina dogs are permitted under effective control. Effective control is when your dog is in your sight and can be controlled by voice command. If your dog does not respond to your voice then it is not under effective control Please remember to “pick up after your dog” so that other users of beaches are not inconvenienced. Use the “Scoop the Poop” bags provided by Barwon Coast.

13th Beach Trails Barwon Coast has just released a draft plan to provide 3 trails within Barwon Heads to improve safety of access to the beaches on 13th Beach Rd for pedestrians and recreational cyclists. Two of the trails link Stephens Parade Barwon Heads to beach access points on 13th Beach Rd whilst the third links alongside the road to the 13th Beach SLSC. Shotput- with a throw of 11.93m and Maddison Traynor (U12) came 8th overall – with a jump of 1.40m in the girls High Jump.

Corrin Demeo (U12) came 8th overall in the girls 800m middle distance run – with a run of 2.31min, and Heidi Demeo (U10) placed 3rd overall in Australia in the 800m track – with a 2.32min time.

OCEAN Grove youngsters have been taking part in the Primary School Sports Australia Track and Field National Championships in Bendigo.

Go the Gators

Congratulations to the Ocean Grove Primary School Future Stars basketball team – The Ocean Grove Gators, for making it through to the state finals of the “McDonalds Hoop Time” junior basketball program. The Ocean Grove Gators made it through to the final competition after winning regional competitions at both the Geelong Arena and Werribee Stadium earlier in the year.

The Ocean Grove Gators made it through to the final 32 teams in Victoria out of an initial 470 teams that started in the competition – so this was a terrific achievement.

They were also one of only three regional teams in the final competition, with all other teams coming from Melbourne schools.

The Gators played five games in total on the final day, making it through to the elimination final where they were only narrowly beaten.

The players were all presented with a basketball and certificate at the conclusion of the competition. Well done Gators!

Waves of support for DSA event THE Ocean Grove based Victorian Disabled Surfers Association held another successful participation day on Saturday.

Despite autumnal weather the event managed to attract a huge volunteer response.

A BIG crowd gathered for the Greenroom sponsored 13th Beach Boardriders Presentation Night and end of season party at 13th Beach Golf Club’s Hawthorn Suites.

With results for the final comp of the season not announced and Aggregate Points in most Divisions being the closest they have been in many years, tension was high among members.

Proceedings started with the awarding of medals of participation to the Micro Grom Division. This group of ultra stoked gremmies, has grown and blossomed under the guidance of Steve Harrison, Dick Field, Cam Lamperd and others and those who have graduated are doing extremely well in the higher divisions.

Young gun, Billy Harrison took out the Under 13 Division with Bronson Field, Tom Harrison and Henry Hutchins filling the minor positions.

Myles Fletcher won the Cadet Division from Tom Harrison, Austin Haire and Will Dickson.

Sapphire Main who has had a fantastic season won the Junior Women’s event followed by Jemima Hutchins, Cassie Vincent and Grace Robertson.

The Junior Men’s Division has been a close tussle all year and went down to the wire in the last event. The eventual winner in this division was Banjo Harfield with little brother Gus, Ethan Harbison and Willis Harrington in the

minor places.

The Masters Division was won by Dick Field, with second Grant Hutchins, Shane Vincent third and Rob Petho fourth.

A very stoked Shane Eagles won the Senior Men’s Division from Damien Robertson, Grant Stringer and Cam Lamperd.

Nic Stephens was the winner of the Open B Division with Bart Johnson-Baxter second, Lewie Speranza third and Leigh Butcher fourth.

The Open women have had some classic duels this year and the competition has been friendly but fierce.

Pip Cornes took out her maiden Open Women’s title from, Lizzie Ryan, Ash Ward and Sapphire Main.

The gold ribbon event, the Open A Title and $500-prize went to Simon Collier who just took the points from little brother Ben, with Josh JohnsonBaxter third and Grant Stringer fourth.

Darcy Berry won a Strapper surfboard for his efforts in pushing his surfing to the limits this year and making great progress.

Locals walking on water Local stand up paddlers Matt Lumley from Barwon Heads and Kristiana Page from Ocean Grove have had a couple of Big Weeks.

They competed against 130 other SUPers at the Corona Merimbula Classic 4 day event.

Matt got 2nd in the Open Mens SUP Surfing and 1st in the Beach to Bar relay sprint race, whilst Kristi (15) achieved 3rd in the Open Womens SUP Surfing for the 2nd year running.

On Sunday Matt and Kristi then travelled to Green Point near Sandringham to compete against 50 other Sprint racers in the The Great Melbourne Paddle 8km Sprint Race. Kristi was involved in a head to head sprint for 2/3 of the race, being beaten out for 3rd place in the Open by a mere 5 seconds. Matt took the title in the Open Mens Race and $500 cash prize for his effort.

The Division 1 final was another battle of young and old with the experienced Phantoms coming up against the newly formed team Gotit.

This was an epic match lasting just shy of 2 hours with 5 sets being played.

Phantoms came out firing in the first set winning 8 easy points straight off the serves of Simon Peake and Maddy Carrigg.

Gotit were struggling with their passing and could not set up for any spikes, calling a time-out at 9 points to 19 to try and put their game

back together. The first set was over quickly with Phantoms winning 25-11 and it looked like it was going to be a short match.

The second set was better than the first with Gotit getting their game back on track, however some sneaky short plays from Aaron Krahe and more consistent serving kept Phantoms in the game, again taking out the

With the champion’s trophy in sight, Phantoms brought the match home to win 15-12 in the 5th set.

A celebration break-up was held for all Bellarine Volleyball players at The Mex in Ocean Grove immediately after the game and trophies were presented to the Grand Final teams.

The new season for the Bellarine Volleyball Association will begin with a registration night on Friday February 4 starting at 7.30pm at the Bellarine Aquatic and Sports Centre.

All individuals and teams are welcome.

By this stage Gotit were on their last chance, they had to win the next set. Both teams started strongly with the score remaining level for most of the set. Gotit were desperate to win every point and when the score came down to 24-24 they knew they could not make any mistakes.

Daniel Kuklych was up to serve for Gotit and he slammed down two jump serves to take out the set 26-24.

Phantoms must have been rattled after that close finish, with Gotit taking a large lead in the fourth set with more consistent serving from Daniel and great setting from Jonathon Lingham.

There were some close rallies and amazing dives from both teams, but Phantoms could not quite bridge the score gap, with Gotit winning the set 2522.

Now we were back to square one. The winner of the next set would win the match. The 5th set is only to 15 points so there was no room for any mistakes.

The crowd was building by this point as the division 2 match had finished so there were

PHANTOMS won back the division 1 title from Gotit while the Tip Rats were toppled by the Surfcoast Grovers at the recent Bellarine Volleyball Association Grand Finals.

The finals are always played the best of 5 sets and in Division 2, the reigning premiers Tip Rats, took on the up and coming younger players in Surfcoast Grovers.

The first set saw Grovers take control of the game with some great passing

by Jess Middleton and some excellent spiking by Lachie Dickson. Grovers won the first set 25 points to 17 and took an early lead in the match.

However, the more experienced Tip Rats regrouped in the second set and consistent serving from Andrew Bean and great setting from Chris Smith saw Tip Rats win this set 25 points to 20.

With the score at one all, both teams produced some excellent play in the 3rd set but fantastic serving by Josh Halton gave Grovers the lead and eventually a win of 25 points to 16.Tip Rats needed to win the 4th set to stay in the match and the rallies were long and exciting with some great

COLLENDINA’S C Grade battle against Barwon Heads last weekend resembled something of a Devereaux family backyard cricket game, writes Daniel Carty.

John, Andrew, Tim and Luke Devereaux all donned the Cobras colours in the side’s disappointing seven wicket away loss to the Seagulls.

Fifteen year old Luke Devereaux described the transition from Under 15’s to senior cricket as “pretty daunting but exciting at the same time”.

The left arm leg spinner took his first senior wicket when he knocked over seagulls opening batsmen R McCarthy. He finished with figures of 1/31 off five overs in his senior debut.

Regular C grade opener John Devereaux would

have been excused for letting his parenting side get the better of him as not two but three of his sons joined him in the outfield for the momentous day.

Andrew and Tim both eighteen years of age, only recently decided to take cricket back up after a year lay off from the sport.

Andrew hit an unbeaten 14 for the Cobra’s while John was run out for 9, and Tim finished with figures of 0/31 off 6

over’s.

In what Luke described as a “weird but great experience” the result didn’t fit the occasion for the Devereaux clan.

The remarkable event wasn’t to be repeated in the latest round of games due to a family getaway, but that won’t stop the Devereaux boys from taunting batsmen and tearing through opposition attacks together for a long time to come.

Grubbers take points in epic THE local derby lived up to all expectations as Ocean Groves number 2 C Grade team recorded a four wicket win over Collendina’s number 1 side, in typically tough conditions at Ocean Groves recreation reserve on Saturday, writes Daniel Carty.

With both Ocean Grove’s A and B sides having the bye this round, all eyes were on the highly anticipated C grade derby between cross town rivals Ocean Grove and Collendina.

Under threatening cloudy skies at the home of the Grubbers it was Collendina #1 that won the toss and elected to bat first. A classy 47 from David Worn and a solid backup 35 from Neale Walter gave the Cobras bowlers something to defend.

The Ocean Grove attack gave the Cobras plenty of headaches with a brilliant 4/15 from Darren M Roddis along with 3/13 from John Murphy tearing through the Cobras shell shocked line up, leaving them reeling at 9/142, setting up an interesting afternoon’s cricket.

SURFSIDE Waves Soccer Club is the most recent winner of Westpac’s Heart 2 Heart initiative, which links Melbourne Heart home games and goals to cash for Victorian football clubs.

Waves is set to receive $1,000 for every Melbourne Heart goal that hits the back of the net.

Struggling with insufficient facilities to accommodate the growing numbers of soccer players in the area, the Waves are keen to ensure both their female and male players are looked after and will put the donated funds towards new changing rooms.

“We have 12 junior teams ranging from

ages of 9 to 17 – both male and female.

Unfortunately we only have one room for all teams to change into their kit and obviously this is not ideal for the girls and women at the club,” explained Club Official Stan Nagle.

“We would also like to use the money to get new equipment and provide additional coaching for our junior players.”

Westpac and Melbourne Heart recognise the need for financial support to ensure clubs in regional and suburban Victoria, such as the Surfside Waves Soccer Club, have the opportunities they deserve.

Open day at Grove primary A GROUP of Ocean Grove Primary Students were treated to an up-close experience with the Australian Tennis Open winner’s trophies, writes Carly Helweg.

The students viewed the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup (men’s trophy) and Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup (women’s trophy) and were able to have their photo taken with the pieces of Australian sporting history.

Ocean Grove was the last stop in a country wide Australian Open Trophy Tour and was a surprise thank you for student Jake Le Maistre.

Twelve-year-old Jake was featured as ‘the voice’ for the Australian Open 2011 video shown at the official launch of the

tournament the week previous.

Ocean Grove Primary principal Darryl Diment said the school was thrilled to host the special trophies.

“We are so excited to have the Australian Open trophy visiting our school,” Mr Diment said.

“It is such a privilege to be hosting an important prize in Australian sport.”

It was the first time the trophies have been to Ocean Grove and their last stop before they head back to Melbourne Park in readiness for the start of the Australian Open on January 17.
