Pilot puts down on field A LIGHT aircraft made an adhoc stop in a Connewarre paddock last week after a spot of engine trouble. The quick-thinking pilot had the option of turning back for Barwon Heads but rather than risk it he brought it safely down in a field. Connewarre fire crews, SES and police attended but there were no injuries or damage to the aircraft.

A mainly female art show at Bellarine Memories was launched with a mixture of aboriginal and indonesian music and dance last week. “It’s fantastic and it’s great to make our room available for this sort of thing,” said Bellarine Memories director Richard Grimmett at the launch of the show on Friday. “It should be a great weekend for indigenous art of Ocean Grove.”

MAYOR John Mitchell officially opened the new Collendina Sports Club clubrooms last week and congratulated the officials and council for working together to achieve it. The clubrooms have undergone a
significant transformation, and new change rooms have been installed for both home and away teams as well as an umpires change room. The new change rooms include showers and toilet facilities. The redevelopment will benefit
Collendina Cricket Club and Ocean Grove/Collendina Junior Football Club. The works to the clubhouse will create an open plan area that will incorporate a kitchen and an internal toilet for disabled people.

The former Barwon Heads players (and their wives), some of which lived or still live in Ocean Grove, make a point of getting together every three months. The players are Steve ‘Chooka’ Piec, Alan ‘the Tank’ Fry, Brian ‘Joey’ Marshman, Graham

‘Langa’ Langsworth, Charlie ‘Dipper’ Di Domenico, Noel Rainey, Jack Evans and Geoff ‘the moth’ Fry. “Thirty two years ago I saw Joey (Brian Marshman) at yet another funeral. I said to him we’ve got to start meeting at barbecues, not funerals,” explained Alan Fry, a record-breaking near 400-gamer in the Bellarine. All the players – part of a side that won the Bellarine premiership
three years on the trot agreed that their friendship stemmed from a legendary social scene at the Barwon Heads football club in the 1970s. They also remember the time in the late 80s when they all came out of retirement with some ex-Grubbers to help heal ‘strained relations’ between the clubs. Apparently the past players games became so popular that they were taking more money

on the gate than the regular first teamers. Part of that may be explained by the fact that the clubs managed to get none other than Gary Ablett senior to umpire the games. Steve – better known locally as Chooka – said simply “You can’t buy friends. This group has been going strong for about 32 years and you can’t get a better group of blokes.”

City agrees further six month wait for lake makeover Kingston residents are fed up with the time it has taken to get their lake looking attractive. They may see hard works after Christmas but no planting until the autumn.
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Drought blame for lake delay KINGSTON residents will have to wait until the autumn before they see the long awaited ‘beautification’ of their lake. Residents in Oakdean Boulevard, Holburn Rise and Milborne Drive look out on a partially developed lake. The council and the developer. say the delay is due to severe drought conditions. However, the developer has gone further and suggested that the council was sluggish in approving its landscaping plans and this has lengthened the delay. Some residents moved in two and three years ago having built there so as to make the most of lake frontage. “We bought the block in March 2008 and we built our two storey home with the upstairs as the living area because we wanted this as our outlook,” said resident Mandy Ollis, “We are disappointed that it is now the end of 2010 and we are still not looking out on something nice.” “They keep delaying it,” said Hazel Kempe.”We have been here three years since we bought the land. We have been waiting and waiting for the lake to be improved. It’s going at a snail’s pace,” she said.
Other residents pointed to the problem when a northerly wind blows. “When it blows a northerly it just blows dust,’ said Ian Chalmers. “If you have any washing out you have to wash it again.” A City of Greater Geelong spokesperson confirmed that street trees had been planted in most of the older streets within the Kingston Estate but trees would not now be planted in the newer streets until 2010. “The drainage reserve area has been grassed but not yet landscaped which is one of the requirements of the planning permit,” the spokesperson said. “The City has endorsed landscape plans for the drainage reserve however when the plans were approved the drought conditions would have prevented the establishment of the new landscape without approved access to a water source. “Taking the dry conditions into account the City has allowed the developer to delay the landscaping works until weather conditions are more favourable for establishing trees - possibly March or April 2010. “Whilst the current rain has
been excellent for growing grass it has done little to improve the extremely dry sub-soil conditions,” the spokesperson said. Developer Jason Corless agreed that the issue had gone on too long but he said it had been worsened by the time the council had taken to approve its plans. “It has been really frustrating. I have been very disappointed with council, it has been a very slow process. It has been a tiresome process. “The council has taken the best part of 14 months to approve a landscaping plan for it.” Mr Corless said that they had hoped to do the landscaping in June 2008. “There was about three to four months of consultation and then it took another 12 months from then to get passed. Unfortunately by the time we got approval we had missed the critical planting season. However, he said they had replaced large amounts of clay with top soil and had directly seeded grass in a bid to cut the dust issue. Mr Corless also explained that the lake is not just a lake but a functioning drainage system that
is evolving with the growth of Kingston and the growth area. He said infrastructure needs had changed. “It’s not really at its finish stage. More work has to be done on the outfall side of the lake,” he said. “I understand people are frustrated and they are more than welcome to contact me. If people make contact I will give them my mobile number and they can contact me with any concerns. “We and council fully understand that you cannot plant in summer anymore. “The frustrating thing for us is that there was an opportunity this year and it has been missed.” Mr Corless confirmed that planting of several thousand plants and hundreds of trees would now resume again in the autumn but that some hard landscaping would be carried out after Christmas. Other plans for the lake include paths, seating, a boardwalk and ultimately a children’s park, in collaboration with the council. On Friday afternoon the Voice contacted the city for comment on the time it took to agree the landscaping plans but had not received a statement when it went to press.

Each ShelterBox supplies an extended family of up to ten people with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use for up to 12 months while they are displaced or homeless. Grove Rotarians have provided five of the boxes each costing about $1,200.

Uniting Church minister James Douglas.
OCEAN Grove has been my home since February 2004. My wife, Susan and I, along with our dog, Chloe, moved here when I accepted a call to be minister for the Uniting Church Parish of Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and Newington (Wallington). Our family has grown here, with our two daughters, Charlotte, (2 and a half), and Lily (8 Months) both being beach babies. Even in the short time we’ve been here, we’ve seen some significant changes in Ocean Grove with the growth of the Kingston estate, the establishment of Market Square and now Target (which has its Uniting Care Christmas Tree up). Ocean Grove is very different to where I grew up in Heidelberg,
a northern suburb of Melbourne. The proximity of the beach, the relaxed lifestyle and the population that changes with the holidays have been highly enjoyable aspects of this town to adapt to. Two things, though, are very similar about Heidelberg and Ocean Grove: one is the sense of community, of mutual cooperation and care; the other, which flows from that sense of community, is the great primary schools. Alongside other parts of my job, I teach Christian Religious Education at Surfside Primary and Ocean Grove Primary (along with Wallington and Barwon Heads Primary schools) and I really enjoy the time I spend with the students. It’s both a privilege and a pleasure to be
part of schools which are more than simply places of education, but communities in themselves, with dedicated staff, volunteers and parents working together for a whole of life education. I’ve recently finished teaching CRE for the year and I’m going to miss the lessons, particularly the curly questions from my grade 6 students, many of whom have bright futures as lawyers! One of my favourite parts of Ocean Grove is obviously the beach, where Chloe would spend all her time if she could; meeting other dogs, chasing seagulls or her ball and sniffing, sniffing, sniffing. The beach is where I’ve learnt to boogie board and where our girls have had their first encounters with waves and sand (and
seaweed). It’s a great place to relax after work and in winter when it’s really windy it’s fantastic to clear my head or to engage in some walking prayer. When we can’t get to the beach, I enjoy spending time with the girls playing, reading stories or singing. Monday is my day off and daddy day-care day. I take the girls to playgroup in the Church hall and I love seeing Charlotte and Lily interacting with other children and playing with a new set of toys; it’s also a great chance to have a chat with other parents whose lives feature topics like toilet training, sleep disruption and tantrums! As the year enters a time of busy preparation for many people, especially those in the retail business, it’s a time to pause and reflect for me as a minister and for the people in my congregations. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, (a time called Advent), we are invited to stop in amongst the busyness and reflect on what it means for God to be one of us, sharing our joys and sorrows,
our limitations and possibilities. We’re invited to look beyond the baby in the manger to the adult Jesus, whose God-centred way of living, teaching and healing touched the lives of so many people, who were yearning for significance, wholeness and a connection with a reality beyond themselves. More than 2000 years later, people are still seeking significance, wholeness and a connection with a reality beyond themselves, and Jesus, God-with-us, still offers these to anyone who seeks them. My prayer for Ocean Grove this Christmas is that our community will take up the numerous and varied opportunities offered by the local Churches to stop and reflect on the gift of God-with-us, Jesus, and receive the gifts of connection, wholeness and significance he offers. • Further information about local Church services and activities over Christmas can be found at the Churches, on notice boards and at http:// oceangrove.unitingchurch. org.au.

Bambidi, Junes and Collards
OCEAN Grove’s Tranquility Fair is shaping up to be the best yet. On top of a huge array of stalls and attractions the event at Ocean Grove Park on Saturday January 2, the music stage will be heavy with talent. First act up will be the Ukule Experience. They will kick off at about 10.30am and will play for about an hour. They will be followed by fresh from Queenscliff Point Lonsdale outfit Bambidi. Bambidi are a 3-piece mostly reggae/ acoustic band, perfectly suited to a sunny summer show. The Little Stevies are due to take over at about 12.45pm. Over the last four years The Little Stevies have built up a reputation across Australia as an exceptional live act and attracted an army of loyal fans won over by their honest charm, witty banter and, not least of all, unique song-writing. Their lyrics are a mixture of the personal
and the profound, each song a story that audiences are always keen to hear retold. Another that played Queenscliff is The Junes. The Junes is a country swing supergroup formed in the wake of GIT and THE TOE SUCKING COWGIRLS - two of the finest female fronted bands that feature Sarah Carroll, Suzannah Espie and Gleny Rae Virus, Headlining this is Collards Greens and Gravy, one of the country’s leading blues acts with their unique style of stripped down swamp blues. They wrap up the music with a set from 3.15 until 4.15pm. The fair also features food stalls including yabbi pies and Tibetan food, fun for kids including a merry-go-round and camel rides, stalls for body, mind and soul, and much more.

Editorial
Drop in a Garden
and eat our words
Ocean Grove local, Robin Asher, found that his hobby became a passion and he is now turning it into a business. “It started with just one veggie plot in the back garden and now my wife says I’ve turned the place into a farm,” he said. “As a kid, my grandpa would walk me around his garden and we’d pick and eat stuff as we wandered through it all. There were fruit trees, asparagus, herbs, all sorts of fruit and veggies in big trenches and just growing incidentally around the place. It was like a paradise to me and a real bonding time. “I’ve always wanted my kids and my friends to share the joy that I got from that experience.” A keen student and holder of two bachelor degrees, Robin has dedicated countless hours to learning how to get vegetables to grow naturally - from books and magazines, clubs and nurseries and by asking lots of questions. He is passionate about long term soil improvement and believes we should all understand how to produce our own food. “It’s so good on so many levels,” says Robin. “Healthier for the land, for us, for our kids and for our spirit. While you’re gardening, even purely for your own satisfaction, then you’re at one with nature.” Robin, a qualified secondary teacher and professional writer, conducts a self-development course he created to help people find their purpose in life. “Gardening has turned out to be really complementary to all the ideas in my course. The answers to most of life’s questions are in being natural.” The Drop in a Garden offer is about making an affordable, productive vegetable garden. Robin says it’s about making something that works – either on its own or as the starting principles that then extend to other plots and gardening ideas. “It’s all about getting people interested in doing their own gardening and eating their own food. “People often just don’t know where to start. In my own garden I have had a lot of failures and made enough mistakes to know how to make it actually work. “ Robin’s wife Stephanie adds that often people who make the effort to put in a veggie garden find that nothing grows very well. “Before Robin showed me how to set it up and maintain it properly, my history with veggie patches was based on a spurt of ignorant enthusiasm followed by total neglect. The results weren’t spectacular so I would just lose interest.” Now the display garden at the front of the Asher home is Stephanie’s pride and
joy. “It is spectacular! And we need to feed an extra nine people in the house for a week after Christmas so it really needs to be.” Drop in a Garden will attempt to find a way of installing a veggie garden that works into the most challenging sites and delights in reusing eco-friendly waste materials where possible if the client agrees. “We have planted out our old kitchen, used our old balcony railings, wheelbarrows, even sinks and cots. “Each job is individually quoted so if people are happy to include ‘scrap’ materials it is super cost effective. We can create herb gardens, or veggie plots, a miniorchard of fruit trees - whatever people want, we will try and find a solution.” For information about the Set Go Ready “Drop in a Garden” including quotes and site assessment see the ad below or call Robin on 0409 85 99 00.

Fifty musos set for Open Mic showcase A “SUPER-SESSION” open mic showcase is being held at the Ocean Grove Hotel in Collendina on Saturday, December 19. The session will feature a mix of folk, blues, rock, and reggae by a range of up and coming and professional musicians from all over the Geelong region. Among the bands already signed up include Riptide Rhythm Four, Rick Webb, Bree-Arne Charmley, Gill Meehan and Brad Luke. The event will be professionally filmed and recorded with the production of a DVD for each act, which artists will be able to use for promotional purposes or simply as a keepsake.
Clubs meet
“We have been inundated with inquiries and bookings,” says event organiser Dave Dorman, who has been involved in running a live session at the Collendina venue for the past year. “It has been an incredible response. We have extended the running time from 3pm til midnight.” The event follows on the footsteps of the hugely successful open mic weekend as well as continuing open mic evenings at Bar Deli and the Zebra Crossing as well as the Ocean Grove Hotel. The bigger the crowd the better the atmosphere will be for recording the DVD.

Hill climb time AN estimated 5,000 cyclists passed through Ocean Grove last weekend as part of the Great Victorian Bike Ride. By the time they reached Orton Street many had already travelled some 450km during the week. And turning left into Presidents Avenue would have been a shock for the unwary.
The hill up to the Terrace proved too much for many. Even the sight of two young ‘hills angels’ perched on the brow wasn’t enough to cajole all to push on. But the rewards for all those who completed it was a good feed at Ocean Grove Park. The park was chock full of spokes and bodies for much of the day.
Kids’ art work pays off
Despite a lunch laid on by the organisers, park volunteers still had to dash out to get more supplies for the sausage sizzle. Elsewhere around the town police and marshals did their best to keep cyclists and cars as a safe distance. One thing’s for sure, few will forget that Presidents Avenue hill in a hurry.
Left: Young entrepreneurs Ebony, Danika and Harley have turned their arty fun into a small business. The picture shows the trio and their stall at Ocean Grove Community Market.
THREE Ocean Grove ‘Zen Kidz’ have turned their love for arts and crafts into a business idea. 11 year old Ebony with siblings Danika 7 and Harley 5 have turned the art they make at Grandma’s house into gifts for people to purchase at the Ocean Grove market. Grandmother Wendy Webb said that the children were always making gifts for the family and thought they might be able to find a way to sell their creations.
“It’s not about the money, is about the procedure and experience,” Wendy said. Each of the kids has their own job to make their day at the market run as smooth as possible. As the eldest, Ebony is in charge of the money and dealing with customers. Danika is in quality control making sure the stock is always presentable and little Harley is the talent, spruiking out the front to entice customers to shop. Keeping their prices low, they aim to cater for children shoppers as well as adults and found at their trial run at the Barwon Heads market their best sellers were handmade Christmas cards and ornaments.

Taking a passion a step further OCEAN Grove’s Andy Sattler has recently started his new business “A Touch of Class – Remedial Massage Therapy”. The business covers relaxation, deep tissue, sports and remedial massages. Andy has always been a keen sports enthusiast and so this seems to have been a natural progression for him. When asked why he looked into massage in the first place, it was initially to help get his wife Cath through another soccer season and once he started the course he became fascinated with the process. The initial plan unfortunately failed when Cath’s 2009 season lasted only three games due to an ankle injury that needed surgery to repair, so Andy changed the focus to rehabilitation, working in conjunction with Cath’s Physio. Andy completed his Certificate 4 and Diploma in Remedial Massage through the Australian College of Massage on Pakington Street in Geelong and is a member of the AAMT. Andy is an electrical engineer
and is therefore very methodical in the way he approaches solving engineering problems. He uses a similar approach when helping clients solve problems with their muscles. Some say this attention to detail is the “German” genes coming out in him! Although from the UK, Andy has German heritage. Andy has always believed in taking an holistic approach to fitness through good diet, exercise and stretching (and the odd glass of red wine!) and that philosophy remains at the forefront of the business. Andy wants to promote wellbeing and help educate everyone to the benefits of massage and isolated stretching. It is a technique that has been instrumental in helping Andy play soccer, complete several marathons, recover from a knee reconstruction and play with his children. “I think massage can perform an important role in the maintenance of people’s wellbeing although it is important to remember that massage in itself is not a cure, it is
the client’s own body that provides the healing. That is why the approach taken has to be tailored to the client’s individual needs and why this field is so fascinating. There’s no better feeling than seeing a client’s improvement over a period and knowing that you’ve played a part in that,” he said. Trigger point therapy is another area that Andy believes strongly in, the benefits of which are to release waste build up from muscles in a controlled manner. Andy has lived in Ocean Grove with his wife Cath and children Kirsten and Adam since they migrated here in 2005. The family love it here; it beats the Manchester rain easily! Cath runs her own gardening business and Kirsten and Adam both attend Bellarine Secondary College. Towards the end of last season, Andy provided a free pre and post event massage to the Geelong Cross Country Club, where Andy is a member. He also provided the free service to Surfside Waves Soccer Club Men’s teams and
with three of his colleagues for the men’s and women’s soccer grand finals at Howard Glover Reserve, Geelong in September this year. He feels that providing a service to the communities sporting clubs is a great way to support sport, health and wellbeing. Andy can be seen running regularly around the streets of Ocean Grove and is a keen member of The Ocean Grove Harriers , who can often be seen running from The Dunes café across the Barwon Heads Bridge, around Barwon Heads and back again from 7 am on a Saturday morning. Just recently Andy received an offer to train as a Remedial Massage lecturer with the Australian College of Massage, due to his assessment results being in the top 10 per cent of candidates. This is something Andy is currently considering. While the business is new, Andy has many local clients mostly from the Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads area. He is also happy to provide a mobile massage service on request.
Storing more staff in Grove PAMELA Van Kerkwijk is the most recent addition to the Store and More self storage team in Ocean Grove. Pamela moved to the area 12 months ago and said she found storing household goods locally was a real problem. “Unfortunately my goods had to be stored elsewhere which
became inconvenient when I needed to get something,” she said. Previously working in the rental management area of real estate, Pamela has a sound knowledge of how to look after tenants needs. Pamela has been appointed part-time manager to help with the increasingly busy facility in

Wholesome grant SURFSIDE preschool has received a $1000 ‘Coles Junior Landcare School Garden’ grant to help their veggie gardens grow, writes Carly Helweg. Preschool teacher, Sally Wilkinson has worked since the start of 2009 to get the vegetable garden program up and running with the Landcare grant a welcome addition. The grant has helped pay for two new floating garden beds and kid sized gardening tools. The program is aimed at giving the kids the first taste of what it means to be self sufficient in the garden and with their new worm farm, the most recent lesson has been composting. “I want to show them the whole cycle of things,” said Sally.
The garden program is nicknamed ‘Romp and Chomp’ and the children participate in cooking sessions using their fresh produce. The children then have the chance to try veggies they might not normally eat like bok choy, tomatoes, carrots and beans. “What we’ve been doing is harvesting and cooking what we’ve been harvesting,” Sally said. The preschoolers all rushed forward to explain their favourite part of the garden. “I like the carrots because they are crunchy and sweet,” said Dylan. “I like digging,” added Ty. The garden is a relevant starting point for most children who go on to Surfside Primary School and will be involved with their Kitchen Garden.

SPOT Happy SOME of the kids at Ocean Grove Primary School have been studying newspapers over the past few weeks, write the class of 2MC Working with us has been classroom helper Barb Dix and our teacher Andy McNeilly. We have been looking at many different papers available for us to read, including the Voice, Geelong Advertiser, Herald Sun and The Age. We’ve made many interesting discoveries and learned a lot about the different sections of a
newspaper. Last week, Alan Barber from the Ocean Grove Voice came to our classroom to talk to us about his paper. The kids were very interested in the price of advertising but most impressed with Alan’s camera! Here’s what a few of the kids wrote..... “Thank-you for coming to 2MC. It was interesting to learn about the Ocean Grove Voice,” said Brad Walder, age 8. “I think that the Ocean Grove Voice is a really good newspaper
because it tells everyone about what has happened lately in Ocean Grove, said Rohan Crawley, age 9. “Thank-you for coming to Ocean Grove Primary School. Your camera was gigantic. It was very interesting to learn about the newspaper. Your newspaper has lots of ads and they looked good,” said Laetitia Harding, age 8 “I really enjoyed it when you came to our school. Thank-you a lot. It was very interesting to learn about the Voice. Your

camera must be very heavy! How do you carry it? The ads are cheaper than I thought,” said Madeleine Lamb, age 8. “Thank-you lots Alan for coming to Ocean Grove Primary School. It was really exciting meeting the editor of the newspaper,” said Ella Armstrong, age 8. “I really enjoyed having you at our school and thank-you for coming. It was very interesting to know how much money the ads were,” said Ella Bambrook, age 8. Pictured above: the class of 2MC.

Nature Watch: Boat ramp birds
THERE are many beautiful birds that inhabit the area near the Boat Ramp in Ocean Grove. The Boat Ramp can be found near the Ocean Grove Golf Course, off Guthridge Street. The Boat Ramp allows access to the Barwon River and Lake Connewarre
for fishing and recreational vessels. The Barwon River rises in the Otways Ranges, and flows through Winchelsea, and then Geelong, where it is joined by the Moorabool River. The Barwon River flows into the sea at Barwon Heads after passing
through Lake Connewarre. The Barwon River is home to many species of fauna which have adapted to living in fluctuating salinity due to the presence of both salt water and fresh water conditions. The edges of Lake Connewarre are located next to the Ocean Grove
We conserve, present and enhance the natural & developed coastal environs for the enjoyment and use of all
BARWON COAST Did you know that unlike most of the developed world Victoria is blessed with a legacy of 96% of its coastline being in public ownership ie The State. More than two-thirds of that coastal crown land is reserved as national park, coastal park, marine park or marine sanctuary mostly managed by Parks Victoria Most of the remaining crown land is reserved for public purposes managed mainly by Committees of Management such as the Barwon Coast Committee of Management. We were established 18 years ago to manage 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks (near Black Rock) including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach.
Golf Club. Lake Connewarre is a significant water bird breeding site and feeding ground, and is home to large numbers of migratory birds as well as resident species. Lake Connewarre is very shallow, with an average depth of 100 cm.
I have seen the following birds from the boat ramp: Pacific Gull, Royal Spoonbill, Australian White Ibis, Pelican, Black, Pied and Little Pied Cormorant, Caspian Tern, Silver Gull, White Faced Heron, Greenshank, Dotterel, and Sandpiper. By Jenny Carr
‘SCOOP THE POOP’ is a must to ensure your dog’s waste does not compromise our coastal environment (Penalties apply). Bags are provided free of charge along our coastline for the collection of waste. Bag it and bin it, to keep our beaches clean.
Beaches Where I Cannot Take My Dog Dogs are not allowed west of 13W Hodgson St Ocean Grove all the way along the Ocean Grove Main Beach, around the Spit and back along the river flat to Lelean Street Ocean Grove Beaches Where Dogs Must Be Under Effective Control Dogs must be under effective control 75 metres west of 7W Collendina to 13W Hodgson Street Ocean Grove. Dogs must be on a leash in the 75 metres either side of the beach access path.
Within that area of management we operate two large coastal caravan parks ie the Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Summer Camping area, the surplus funds from which enable our coastal management activities to be undertaken at no cost to the local community.
Effective control is when your dog is in your sight and can be controlled by voice command. If your dog does not respond to your voice command, it is not under effective control.
We are also the appointed manager of the local Port of Barwon Heads whose waters extend from the Barwon Heads Bluff to Sheepwash Rd Barwon Heads.
What About the Rest of the Reserves, Caravan Parks and Public Places • Dogs are not allowed into the coastal dunes at any time. • Dogs must be on a leash at all times on all roads and shared pathways; • Dogs must be on a leash within 10 metres of playgrounds, picnic and barbecue areas and on all jetties and piers. • Dogs must be on a leash along the Riverside shared pathway north of the Barwon Heads bridge to the south of Riverview Family Caravan Park.
New Dog Control Orders For Ocean Grove Beaches From 18th December 2009 To 31st January 2010 Barwon Coast has been working with the City of Greater Geelong on new dog control orders for our stretch of coastline. Dog controls, which are now in force for the Barwon Coast apply from 7W Collendina to 42W Connewarre, and include the Barwon River estuary and the coastal dune system. Responsible pet ownership creates healthier lifestyle choices with the needs of the community and the coastal environment. The dog controls aim to increase pet owners taking responsibility for their dog’s actions, contributing to a safer and healthier environment in public places. New dog control orders over the peak summer period (18th Dec to 31st Jan) for the Ocean Grove coastal environment are as follows.
This information is a guide only. Keep your eye out for the new dog control brochure, which will have all dog control orders for the Barwon Coast. Should you encounter a Dog at Large, please contact the City of Greater Geelong Local Laws on 5272 7272. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager

MORE than 50 girls hit the water in Ocean Grove with seven times world champion surfer Layne Beachley on Sunday. Layne was in town as part of the Play it Safe by the Water Surfing for Girls Program which is touring Victoria. Regardless of the overcast conditions and strong winds, the girls were pumped to get in the water with Layne. Participants were given a chance to surf with Beachey as well as getting some tips in the water. Beachley was enthusiastic about the program and what it aims to achieve.
Beachley was impressed with the level of surfing from the girls. “I can definitely see some potential World Champions out there!” Also making an appearance was top Victoria Junior Surfer, Nikki Van Dijk (Phillip Island) who is fresh off a second placing at the Australian National Junior Championships and has just returned from Hawaii. Participants were each given a rashvest and split into groups according to skill level for the first session. The first session involved beach rescue techniques, negotiating the surf and basic surf skills. The
girls then got in the water with the coaches and tested out their new skills. The second session was a chance for the girls to get in the water with the Surfing Victoria team and have a free surf. Local masters champion Heather Peck was also involved in instructing the young surfers during the day. Most of the girls were keen to get back in the water for another surf with almost 90% heading back into the waves after lunch. All girls received a show bag filled with GRLmobile prizes and an Oakley tee. There were also surprise
giveaways throughout the day. Scarlett Brookes walked away from the day with a GRLmobile Mobile phone pack that included a brand new Mobile Phone and the latest perfume from Britney Spears. Emma Bird also won a mobile broadband card from GRLmobile. Cindel McSween won a brand new pair of Oakley sunglasses. Another big winner was Santana La Fontaine of Barwon Heads who received a brand new Aloha Surfboard courtesy of Global Surf Industries and presented by Julie Murphy of Murph’s surf shop.

Soul finishes up season Proudly Printed & Supported by
SOUL Longboard club trailed a new competition format with a fun surf day at Ocean Grove on the 5th December. The day was then followed by an end of year presentation at the Ocean Grove Golf Club that night. The new format does away with the traditional individual grades and puts all names into a draw that then becomes a grading heat. Where you finished in the grading heat is where you then surf against all the other surfers that finished at the same level in a final

It also ensures that all surfers get two surfs for the day and not just one as sometimes happens with the other systems,” said president Brian Tucker. In what could only be described as a tough year conditions wise, SOUL ran a total of 6 out of a possible 10 competitions for the year, and really only scored good conditions for a couple of those.
Ginny Werner capped off a successful year by taking out the Junior Girls and the Open Women’s divisions. Ben Cosidine also completed the same feat in the Junior Boys and Traditional divisions. Each year the president presents a best club person award to someone that has helped and contributed to the club during the year. This year it was awarded to Russell Synott for his good efforts around the club. Andrew Needham produced a

The Grovers.
The Phantoms.
Bellarine Volleyball Association Grand Final: Division 1
Phantoms versu SC Gotit. Phantoms have been in the finals consistently for several years and it is great watching this team perform to their best in finals. The first set saw Phantoms win with not too much effort and may have lulled Gotit into a false sense of security as the second set was a different story altogether. Second set saw Phantoms fall apart considerably to lose this set. Gotit took advantage of the lull in concentration and took full control easily winning 25-16. Daniel Kuklych was spiking like a professional, he was on the net hitting balls that made it look so effortless. Phantoms really didn’t know what hit them and their attack game was flat, their communication on the court was very quiet and they didn’t look at all confident. Aaron Krahe for Phantoms did a fantastic job chasing a ball to help his team and collided with a linesman, so the point was replayed and there were no hard feelings. He did a fantastic job with his speed and height helping him chase this particular point. It was such a great moment in the game. Third set saw some great scrambling from Gotit it to win points, considering they were playing with 5 players and Phantoms had a full team and people on the bench. Gotit looked so hungry for the ball and it made them more determined to cover the missing player who unfortunately couldn’t make it because she is in Japan on a scholarship. Even with one player down Gotit did a fantastic job to make Phantoms go to 25-23. Phantoms once again lost their aggression and just fell apart; their heads were down and not focusing on the game, more on the points lost. Gotit saw this opportunity and used it to their advantage. The Forth set saw Phantoms really struggling with frustration in the ranks, with messy play and not much communication on the court. Most players in Phantoms have played state league volleyball and it shows with their skills, when they were put under pressure from a young team of players who are just as equally skilled it really showed that their experience came to the forefront of their game. Phantoms were challenged the whole game by the younger team and it just shows that experience pays off. Young Paul Henry did a fantastic job being in position to pick up the blocks from his
team mates and also being in position for a spike. Daniel Kuklych did some awesome back line spiking and really helped his team. I haven’t mentioned much about the girls in the teams, not forgetting them they are what holds the teams together they do a fantastic job of setting the balls for the spikers, chasing balls that have gone out of court to get the ball back in play and generally have a calming influence on the team when the men get a bit hot headed. Altogether the teams played so well and it is great to see such awesome playing from these teams. It was a fantastic game to watch, at times the coach of Phantoms got a bit hot under the collar but his team listened to his experienced voice and pulled it together to win another final for Bellarine Volleyball Association. Final scores for Division 1 Grand Final Phantoms winning 3 sets to 1 set 2513, 16-25, 25-23, 25-20 If you are interested in playing volleyball Friday nights we start again on the 29th January 2010, at the Surfside Centre. You don’t have to have a team to play you can come on your own and be put in a team; it is a great way to meet people and have a great time as well. Division 1 is a more competitive side with substitutions, time outs and more rules than Division 2, Division 1 players generally have played tournaments and play regularly during the week and they prefer the competitive side of the game. Division 2 on the other hand is more laid back in their playing; generally speaking they are wanting to have a relaxing time on a Friday night after a hard weeks work. If you want, you can start in Division 2 and go up to Division 1 if you wish, start in Division 2 for one season to get the hang of volleyball and then next season go up to Division 1. Division 1 is always looking to help out other players to help with their skills and this shows by them coaching Division 2 teams. This helps the teams greatly as you get the experience and skills from a Division 1 player. This has helped a lot of teams this season, and the Division 1 players are more than accommodating. It is great to see this team work between the two Divisions even though there is such a difference in skills. If you only have 4 friends why not bring them along and get a couple more players and there you have a team. You only need 6 players but it is good to have a couple more as emergencies. With Division 2 you generally have a rolling

The Division 2 final. substitution and everyone gets to play, Division 1 you have a set substitution. It is such a fantastic game to play and anyone can play. We have in the past had Junior teams as well and they play from 7- 7.30. It is a good beginning for the juniors. If you have any juniors who want to play. come along and bring them on the 29th January, because there may be more juniors who want to play but may be too shy. It is a great way of encouraging young ones to get active. The team that played against Phantoms in the Division 1 Grand Final started in juniors and now some of those young players are training with State League Volleyball, so you never know where it will lead, and the great thing about volleyball is that you play all year round, rain, hail or shine. You don’t have to worry about wet grounds or too hot, it is a great game and everyone should have a go. Till next year on the 29th January have a great Christmas and Happy New Year and we hope to see you all down at the Surfside Centre for a fun game of volleyball.
Division 2.
The Division 2 final was a tightly fought contest between Grovers, who were playing in their first grandfinal, and Demolition Republic. Demolition Republic started out strongly and took an early lead with some great spiking from Brendan Calwell and Tom
McKenzie. Great passing from the back court by Rebecca McKenzie and Emma Crabbe helped them to win the first set 25 points to 15. In the second set, Grovers regrouped and excellent serving from Josh Halton and Jess Middleton saw Grovers win the second set with a close score of 25 points to 22. The third set consisted of some great volleyball from both teams, with long, hard fought rallies and some spectacular pick ups. Despite the good work at the net by Chris Cahill and Adam Jones for Demolition Republic, the blocking and spiking by Lachie Dickson and Spencer Gray from Grovers was too strong and Grovers took the third set 25 points to 21. The fourth set was very exciting for both players and spectators with both teams taking the lead at different times throughout the set. However, accurate passing by Rochelle Chester and great pick ups by Georgia Ellis resulted in Grovers taking the fourth set 25 ponts to 19 and consequently winning the match 3 sets to 1. Both teams consisted of young players who are really enjoying their volleyball and it was a very exciting match to watch. Grovers are returning next season to defend their title, while Demolition Republic are having a change with some players moving up to play in Division 1 and others looking forward to another season in Division 2.

Nearly half the team from one family LAST weekend’s Grubbers D2 teamsheet had an unusual look about it. Something to do with the fact that it included four players with the same surname. Actually five if you count the 12th ‘man’. Four players that took to the oval against Collendina D1 at the weekend were from the Hapgood family. The Hapgood’s - dad Mark, and sons Aaron, James and Cameron – plus Lochlan (10), helped their side to a 5/99 to 8/88 win over near neighbours Collendina. The highest scorer on the day was Colin Bate – not a stranger to playing alongside his own siblings – with 35. The game family event was also a great way to mark Aaron’s remarkable comeback from a heart transplant - just a year ago last September. Since then Aaron has played consistently for one of Grove’s under 16 footy team sides, even earning finals action.
