Motorcyclist dies in Marcus Hill smash POLICE are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal collision in Marcus Hill on Monday afternoon (June 8). It appears a motorcyclist travelling east and a garbage truck travelling west collided on the Bellarine Highway about 12.40pm. Investigators believe that the motorcyclist
was overtaking when the collision occurred. The motorcyclist, 42-year-old Paul Orchard from Leopold, died at the scene. Police have taken a statement from the truck driver involved. Bellarine Highway was closed to traffic in both directions between Banks Road and
Grove price stalls PROPERTY prices in Ocean Grove rose marginally in the last year, according to the latest Victorian Property Sales Report. Ocean Grove has continually bucked the trend locally. But unit prices have taken a dive. According to the report the prices of homes rose by 3.7 per cent over the period OctoberDecember 2007 to October-December 2008. However, as the reports are presented in three-month segements, the last which was July-September to October-December, there was a 3.2 per cent fall. The aim of the Victorian Property Sales Report is to present factual information relating to property sales occurring throughout Victoria over a period of 15 months. In comparison, the residential housing property market (median house price) in Victoria fell by 1.5 per cent during the December quarter of 2008, having fallen by 2.2 per cent in the previous quarter (September 2008). Overall, median prices continued the previous quarter’s trend and fell between September 2008 and December 2008. As in the previous three quarters, the volume of sales is lower than for the corresponding quarter last year. The median price of houses in Victoria decreased from $335,000 in the September 2008 quarter to $330,000 in the December 2008 quarter, which puts it close to the September quarter in 2007 ($325,000). For the 12 months from December 2007 to December 2008 median house prices

in Victoria decreased by 5.7 per cent from $350,000 to $330,000. The median price of units in Victoria decreased by 2.3 per cent to $320,000 for the December 2008 quarter having declined slightly from $330,000 to $327,500 in the previous quarter. Generally the report suggestes there continues to be little to separate unit and house market values at the state level.

There also appears to be a seasonal factor affecting the quartly reports.

quick news Fiery collapses
Aldi shows interest in east Terrace site ALDI is believed to have shown an interest in land to the east of the Zebra Bar, between the Terrace and the Parade. Although the retailer would not comment on specific enquiries they have confirmed a “strong interest” in opening a store in the town and favour a town centre rather than an out of town location. Other sources in the town have confirmed that approaches have been made regarding the land although part of the project would probably entail the acquisition of a council car park. It is not known whether the council has been
contacted on that matter. It is also understood that the car park and adjoining land would easily fit the store’s need for a 1,800sqm site. Another area that has been mooted is on the corner of The Avenue and Hodgson Street, opposite the old fire station and Ocean Grove Park. Aldi had previously cast an eye on the previously dormant site earmarked by Target. However Target has reinforced its intention to take the spot and scuppered any opportunities in that direction. news@oceangrovevoice.com

Police warn of Grove car break ins
Acting Sgt Ron Gray with one of the cards that have been given out to car drivers in the town.
AN Ocean Grove firefighter was taken by ambulance and treated in hospital after collapsing during a call out to a ruptured gas main in Bonnyvale Road earlier this month. The crew member was discharged after five hours having been given the clear. The incident on June 3 was brought under control reasonably quickly. Other call outs included a vehicle accident in Point Lonsdale and a fire alarm at a property in Asbury Street.
POLICE in Ocean Grove are encouraging locals to take action to avoid car break ins, which they say is an ongoing problem along the coast. Officers in the town ran a proactive campaign during the Queens Birthday long weekend including distributing display cards to motorists. The cards inform would-be thieves that valuables have been removed and aim to stop them breaking in to find out. Acting Senior Sgt Steve Ansett said that the biggest problem stemmed from the fact that valuables are left in cars in sight of opportunist thieves. “It’s not just beach car parks, it’s shopping centres, private streets, even your own driveway,” he said. “Lock your car and remove valuables, cds, money and where possible park in well lit areas.”

Margaret ‘overwhelmed’ THE local musical enthusiasm and commitment of Ocean Grove’s Margaret Hughes was recognized in the recent Queen’s Birthday honours. Margaret told the Voice she was overwhelmed when she received a letter saying she would receive the Order of Australia medal. Margaret who taught music and dance in primary and special schools in England, Scotland and New Zealand as well as Victoria,
is now the musical director for the 15-strong Ocean Grove Uniting Church choir as well as the 46-member University of the Third Age Geelong Choir and is a tutor with the Active Listening to music class in Ocean Grove. She is also an occasional singer with Geelong Chorale. Margaret said she was “deeply indebted” to all the people involved in putting forward the award.
“Each Monday, Wednesday and Sunday I am rewarded by the obvious pleasure people get from what I do … they are always telling me how much they enjoy my classes and choirs. “Music is so powerful – it’s good for the mind, the body, and the soul…not to mention the tremendous social benefits making music together offers.” Margaret’s previous experience also extends to working with
outstanding conductors within the Sheffield Philharmonic Society, Cambridge University Musical Society in the UK as well as the Christchurch Harmonic Choir in New Zealand and the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic here in Australia. Continuing the family line, Margaret’s son Frazer is also involved with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Spit faces road threat VICROADS has confirmed it intends to widen the part of the spit road as part of the Barwon Heads Bridge redevelopment. The plan was revealed when several hundred locals met to protest against VicRoads plan to replace the current bridge with two bridges located further downstream. At the meeting Cr Jan Farrell suggested the plan – along with the rest of the project - was fundamentally floored and that the ‘windy road’ has an effect of slowing traffic. Straightening
it would more likely encourage higher speeds. Michael Harbour, chairman of Ocean Grove Community Association, said that the road widening had not previously been discussed and there was dismay among communities on both sides of the bridge that such a plan would be imposed without consultation. “To straighten that road would be even more dangerous and would mean removing even more vegetation. “ Mr Harbour said that cabling for
construction huts was now in place and there is an expectation that contractors would appear soon. “More of the spit has also gone in the last week. A couple of metres has gone.” In answer Duncan Elliott, VicRoads Regional Director, South Western Victoria said: “Road widening will be only required to provide a central pedestrian refuge and to accommodate a turn lane for a safer entrance to the car park on the Ocean Grove approach to the
bridge.” Regarding community consultation he said VicRoads is “working with the Department of Planning and Community Development to finalise the Environmental Management Procedures for the project. Mr Elliott said the first works to be undertaken will be installing safety fencing of the McConnell Dowell construction compound. “Survey works and location of services will also be undertaken during the early stages of the project,” he said.

Support the Just Think campaign
Sorry this might sound a bit nepotistic but it’s not meant to be. The Voice believes the current Geelong Advertiser campaign really is worthy of support. We are all sick and tired of reading about another 20-something being airlifted to the Alfred as a result of a fun night out. This tragedy must stop and the Addy and the Geelong Football Club’s hard hitting crusade is inspired.

day in the life - joe davitt
Ocean Grove Voice, June 17-30, 2009 - Page 7
Joe Davitt.
AFTER living all my life in Melbourne, Michelle and I with Emily our 4 year old at the time decided to head to Ocean Grove.
For us it was exciting to move across to Ocean Grove although we had no family or friends over here. We have now been in Ocean Grove for 4 and a half years and would not change it for the world. The people are great and so is the area. I grew up in Lalor and went to Lalor High School as a kid. Have to admit I hated school. I was fairly shy and had no brains, was always the youngest in my class so it was hard to be good at it with those disabilities. I had no formal qualifications so after a few jobs etc I ended up through opportunity, setting up my own marketing company. Some people have asked me if I would ever open a shop in Ocean Grove. Personally I would not, so I appreciate all the small businesses that do. They work very hard and the staff should learn to appreciate how hard it is for the owners of the business. My tip to the staff reading this is look after your employer and they will look after you. As I work from home I have been blessed, so to have a 9-5pm grind would be hard, especially if I had no one coming in to my shop for the entire day would drive me nuts. Having said that once a person
leaves at 5pm his or her day has finished and I might be working until who knows due to my overseas clients. But I would not trade what I do for the world. My typical day would start at 6am; I do a bit of consulting for a couple of overseas clients. Then when time permits I will drop Emily off at school and then come back for my local, interstate and finish off the balance of overseas work. I do go to Melbourne from time to time to see suppliers, clients etc. But I try to limit this to once a week or so. If I get a chance to pick up Emily from school it is a bonus and then spend a bit of time with the family. Sometimes at night I will work late for my other overseas clients who are starting there day. So overall I am lucky to relax when I can, work when I have to but I am not a 9-5 person as that does not suit who I am. I run a marketing company from home and specialize in Direct Mail. In short, anyone who has a database for their business I can help. So if you have a product to sell and have a list of names (or you can build your business using a list broker), you can send a sales letter to them and hopefully you will get
some orders. I find it odd that some businesses will spend thousands of dollars on advertising and do not know if it works or not. Or when you ask them how often they send a letter to their current customers how they would say “I don’t need to, they have already bought off me”. Figures show that you will sell your current clients a lot easier than trying to find a new one. Other than business I enjoy trying to play golf, I read a bit and also like to catch up with friends. I don’t play as much as I would like too, one because I am a hacker and the 2nd is I do not find it as important as spending it with my family etc. I like the Voice as it really has a community feel, seeing the football pics, local restaurant pics etc is really good. If I was to add anything to Ocean Grove Voice I would include a page on local restaurants and give them a plug. Be good to see all the local places packed instead of going elsewhere. Because if we go elsewhere we may find we lose a few local restaurants. Overall I really love where we live and feel Ocean Grove is heading in the right direction.

OUR Lady Star of the Sea Primary School held it’s Annual Debutante Balls in May. The two evenings were a great success with parents, grandparents and friends alike enjoying the presentation of beautiful young ladies and their partners. The events have been Our Lady Star of the Sea’s major fundraiser for a number of years and the school is proud of the high quality evenings provided by a very hard-working and dedicated group of parent volunteers. Each year the Debutantes choose a theme and with the help of professional lighting and stage production the school continues to produce spectacular evenings. Great importance is placed on providing a safe and friendly atmosphere in which all guests have the opportunity to enjoy the evening with their family and friends. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Our Lady Star of the Sea’s next Debutante Balls will be held on the 21st and 22nd May 2010. For details contact 5255 4308.

Estuary watchers scoop Vic award VOLUNTEERS caring for the health of the Grove’s Barwon and other coastal estuaries have received state recognition. Volunteer members of the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority’s Estuarywatch team received the Keep Australia Beautiful Clean Beaches’ Community Action Award at an award presentation in Melbourne. Corangamite CMA’s Estuarywatch team work with 50 volunteers monitoring 12 estuarine environments, where the river meets the sea, regularly monitoring water quality, estuary mouth condition and estuary events at their designated estuary from Ocean Grove’s Barwon Estuary through to Princetown. Corangamite CMA Estuarywatch co-ordinator Matt Khoury said the
Estuarywatch program had come a long way since a community based survey in 2005 revealed little was known about our region’s estuarine environments, and there was a real need for a communitybased monitoring program. “Initiated in May 2006, this program was developed to raise awareness and understanding of the health of our estuaries, while informing and empowering local communities through education, monitoring and partnership development,” he said. In addition to winning the Community Action Award in the 2009 Clean Beaches Awards, the Estuarywatch team was among the finalists in the Victorian Coastal Awards for Excellence in the innovation category.

Tidal travellers SEA and land snails belong to the class Gastropoda, but sea snails belong to the Phylum Mollusca. Sea and land snails look very similar in structure, with a foot, shell, and tentacles. This sea snail was still alive but found on the beach at Ocean Grove attached to some seaweed. I wondered how the snail could survive both under the water and on the shore- a fish cannot survive out of the water so how can a snail? Almost all marine snails breathe with a gill, in contrast to land snails which breathe with a lung. The
gills are arranged on the backs of the snail, and they look like a comb, as the gills are folded several times over to increase the surface area. When a stream of water flows over the gill, the oxygen concentration in the water is higher than the oxygen concentration in the snails blood. Oxygen diffuses across the gill into the blood stream, and carbon dioxide passes out of the blood stream, by the process of diffusion. At low tide when the water ebbs, some sea snails curl up in their shells to stay moist, to maintain a source of water within the shell (to
allow oxygenation). The shell of this sea snail had a trap on it to maintain a moist environment (in contrast to land snails who secrete a substance into the hollow of the shell to retain moisture), although the body of the snail was visible until it retreated into the shell when I picked it up. The trap door is known as an operculum, and this structure has a pleasant scent when burned and is sometimes used as an ingredient in incense! How this was discovered is anyone’s guess! By Jenny Carr

BARWON COAST Barwon Coast, your local coastal foreshore managers, has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Black Rock including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate the Barwon Heads Caravan Park & the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove. Our Committee members are all local residents from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and are appointed by the State Government following the public advertising for expressions of interest.
Keep Australia Beautiful Award Winners At the recent Keep Australia Beautiful Clean Beach Awards our Ocean Grove Beach was a finalist in two categories. The Zero Waste Category that we won in 2008 and the Family Friendly Beach Category. We were delighted to receive the Special Commendation award in the Family Friendly Beach Category recognizing the decision by Barwon Coast to ensure that a ramp to suit persons of all abilities was constructed as part of the $1.4m replacement of the Ocean Grove Seawall and Promenade. The citation with the award noted that the ramp has provided access for wheelchair bound people to the beach leading to the establishment of a branch of the Disabled Surfers Association at Ocean Grove and further that amphibious wheelchairs were available to enable volunteers to help those with disabilities to have a surfing experience. The Family Friendly Beach Category was won by the City of Greater Geelong for Eastern Beach whilst the Zero Waste Award went to the Waratah Beach Surf Life Saving Club for their program to collect litter washing up from passing fishing boats and cruise ships. We look forward to working with the Disabled Surfers Association again this summer to maximise the benefits from the construction of the ramp and the provision of the amphibious wheelchairs.
Ocean Grove Main Beach Amenity Block The planned demolition and rebuilding of the Ocean Grove Main Beach Amenity block took another step closer to reality with the Committee providing project funding of $500,000 within our 2009/10 budget. These funds being made available from the surpluses generated from the operation of our caravan parks. We are currently reviewing options for an underground rainwater storage tank system to cope with the potential catchment from the roof area and hard standing surrounds. Structural & civil engineering, hydraulic and electrical consultants are also finalizing their work. It is proposed to complete all designs within the next month and to establish a local community information board prior to seeking range of permits that are required for the work. Construction is proposed to commence immediately after Easter 2010.
Ocean Grove Main Beach vegetation mounds When the major reconstruction of the Ocean Grove Main Beach area was undertaken by Barwon Coast several years ago , Surf Beach Rd was relocated to the back of the coastal reserve and the car parks were relocated to the beach side of the road. To reduce the impact of large areas of car parking decision were taken to only seal about half of the car parking area and to retain a green finish to the “overflow” car parks that are mainly used over park summer and weekends. To further break up the area an extensive series of mounds were created and planted with native vegetation. We are currently refreshing the mounds with new plantings to replace those that have not survived the lack of rainfall or human activity and are generally applying mulch to the entire area. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to our proposed works and coastal management generally by phoning me on 5254 1371

OCEAN Grove has a new men’s clothing store, taking over an empty shop following a recent property shuffle. The store - Casual Guy - is managed by Bobbie Carter – who has been with the firm for almost ten years. Before joining the Casual Guy team in Ocean Grove, Bobbie worked on the Mornington Peninsula. She has recently relocated and now lives in Ocean Grove. The store opened its doors on 3 June in Ocean Grove, so they are a very new business to the town. Bobbie says that “ they hope to thrive in this lovely coastal town” and “would love for any of the locals to pop in and say hello and have a wander around the store”. Apart from managing retail business, Bobbie has studied fine art at Deakin. When she is not hard at work in the shop, she can be found working away in her creative field. Bobby said: “Casual Guy provides a wide range of menswear to the general public. “We stock very affordable suits and shirts as well as smart casual jackets, knits and shirts, and are a smallish store with only three staff members, who all enjoy a coffee and a chat!”
Your business is unique, so is our advice. Adele Prudames.
New appointment at town agent ADELE Prudames embarked on her career in real estate in 1994, beginning on reception for a small company in North Queensland, moving onto a larger company and then into property management. Relocating to Melbourne, Adele cut her teeth on the tough Hawthorn/ Kew/Camberwell market working in both residential and commercial property management as well as gaining valuable skills working in trust accounting. Relocating to Perth Adele
moved back into residential management managing inner city apartments and then moving on to manage a portfolio of properties for international clients. She was given an opportunity to travel overseas to discuss her client’s business needs during this time. A further relocation to Ocean Grove saw Adele working for four years as a Receptionist, Property Manager and then a Department Manager with a large Bellarine Peninsula firm. In this capacity she
implemented in house training sessions and effected cultural change within the organisation. CJ Keane and Co are fortunate to now employ Adele as a Property Manager. Adele is a firm believer in “doing what you say you are going to do”. She believes in responsible and effective communication. Adele builds good working relationships with her clients, believing that communication is paramount in property management.

Up and riding, finally AFTER three cancellations due to poor weather and no surf everyone in the 13th Beach Boardriders was amped when the early morning text came through to say that the Billabong sponsored Comp 3 was finally on. With perfect 2-3 foot waves peeling down the Leftbank at First Car Park, the sun shining and a light nor’ wester blowing, things couldn’t get much better. The Cadets were first out as the Under 13’s headed down to Signies where some nearly got lost, as just like the old days they had to clamber down the sand dunes to the beach, due to the stairs being washed away in the big swell a few weeks ago. Once in the water the groms
showed they knew what they were there for. Bronson Field blasted his way to first place with some amazing lip bashings and floaters. Not far behind were the Harrison boys Tom then Billy with Henry Hutchins fourth. In the Cadets, once again it was Gus Harfield who the pack were chasing and he took first place ahead of Rory Hempton in an amazing final. Chris Jansen took out his first Junior Men’s Comp with a great display of power carves and a couple of explosive launches from the lip. Chris has now rocketed to the top of the points for this division. Bec McGlinchey claimed her second consecutive victory in the Junior Girls, taking the points

from Jemima Hutchins and Sapphire Main Steph Crowley-Clough heads the competition at the season’s half way mark in the Open Women’s Division. Steph outpointed Pip Cornes, Ally Kenwood and Kiri O’Conner in a hard fought final. Cam Lamperd blasted away on his backhand to take the Senior Men’s Division from Matt Tribe, Elton Robertson, Damien Robertson and Shano. While club legend Mark “Hutto” Hutson has made a strong claim for another Masters title winning yet again. Open B saw Jason Kersten win his first event surfing strongly to defeat Link Beckworth in a close final.
Bronson Field, under 13.
Tom Harrison, under 13.
In Open A, new comer Kyle Gilbert shook the establishment around by taking out his fist club event. Kyle put together a couple of long high scoring rides to claim the points. Even a massive floater that had the crowd roaring from Shawn Todd was not enough to sway the judge’s decision. New Club President Elliott Gray took third spot. A reminder to all members that the club will have a short break over winter and will restart on August 29th, with the Tonik sponsored Comp4. See you all there! Merryn Thomas was
doing a great job of spiking and passing the ball for her team, with Matt Burns and Steve Thomas doing a great job of blocking and spiking into the positions where Team Wave had an opening. A really good night. Team Wave did a really good job in the second set to take 6 pact to 26 points, they had an injured player with Lynell Dungen only being able to pass the ball as her knee had a bit of trouble, her serving is something that she can always rely on to keep her team going, movement around the court was not as good. Her team really came to the forefront to help her out to cover the injured player. The whole team played really well and gelled together. Derek Thorn did some great serves to keep the team in play and David Woolhouse picked up some great passes.
Got it vs Phantoms Gotit winning 2 sets and Phantoms winning 1 set The first set went Phantoms way, 25-19, then Gotit winning the next 2 sets 25-15, 16-12, another great game leading up to the prelim finals next week. Phantoms did a great job in the first set to win easily, the next 2 sets saw them loose focus a bit and it showed in the scores, Once again Lyn Edlich did some fantastic setting and Lisa Krahe did some good passing as well considering she has a knee injury. Great spiking from Simon Peake and really good team play. Gotit came together in the second and third set to win from Phantoms. It is good to see a young team coming up against on older team who still regularly play in tournaments. Gotit has some great players in their team
and look like they are going to give Phantoms a run for their money in the finals. The stars for the nights were brother and sister team of Jess and Dan Kuklych who did a great job, to hold the team up. Great blocking and spiking and covering the court really well. Will be good to see what happens next week for the prelim finals. No time limit on the games next week as it is the best of 5 games. Next game after that is the Grand Final so if you come down to the Surfside Centre you will see some great games going on. It is be very exciting to see Division 1 and Division 2 playing at the same time. So come along and see what volleyball is all about, you never know you may actually like it. Games start at 7.30pm hope to see you there.

Div ones up and down season continues
PICTURES: Waves division 2 side take on Lara.
SURFSIDE Waves division 1 men’s team suffered only their second defeat of the season, going down 3-1 away to second placed Barwon. A new look Waves line-up actually took the lead early on with a good finish from Fonda Tzaninis, skilfully lobbing the ball over the oncoming goalkeeper. Unfortunately, the Waves then conceded two soft goals in a lack lustre first half performance. In the second half the Waves came out with renewed focus, but despite dominating the play they were unable to produce the much needed equaliser, before finally being hit by a sucker punch goal against the run of play that effectively killed off the contest. Then in their next outing the Waves defeated North Geelong at home 1-0 with Staffan Hargreaves scoring the decider with a perfectly placed drive that went in off the post. The Waves played a more phyisical style of play that seemed to please their Irish coach Stan Wangle.

Find the Actor within you... Waves under 14 girls line up Breakwater at the weekend.
Class among waves juniors SURFSIDE Waves Soccer Club women’s teams continue to sit near the top of their age groups with yet more superb performances in the last fortnight. In fact women’s and girls teams south of the Barwon River dominate their respective competitions. The Under 14 girls led by Coach Dave Woodhouse continue to show why they are one of the two top teams in the competition, only losing one game this season to ladder leaders Surf Coast Yellow. The under 14s have a solid mix of experienced and new players to the game of football, and gel nicely on the field. Following a bye and a 5-1 win against Breakwater Eagles last weekend, Coach Woodhouse is very pleased with his teams’ performance. “We are doing very well and have only been beaten once,” Coach Woodhouse said. “We have a good mix of players, with a different skill levels who all play their part as a team. “The new players have adapted well to the game and are assisted by more experienced players.”
Coach Woodhouse is confident his side can make the finals and are likely to play Surf Coast - the only side to defeat the Waves. “Surf Coast really showed us what we need to add to our game and I think we can make some improvements - they are the benchmark,” Coach Woodhouse said. Several under 14 girls attended the Country Football Championships against the best teams in the state and have come back brimming with confidence. The under 16 Girls are also strongly positioned on the ladder tied leaders with Surf Coast and Barwon following a bye and sensational 2-1 win against Lara Red. Coach Mal Jobson described the latest win as one of the best he had witnessed and believes the girls have what it takes to give the finals series later in the year a very good shake. Surfside Waves senior woman sit comfortably in second place behind Surf Coast Blue on the ladder following a convincing 6-1 win again against Surf Coast Red last weekend and a 3-nil win against Deakin the previous week.
Waves under 14 girls in action against Breakwater Eagles.
The senior woman, are also expected to face Surf Coast in the finals series. Senior men’s division two had an embarrassing 13-nil loss against Lara a fortnight ago with several regular team members away for the Queens Birthday long weekend, but redeemed themselves last weekend with a narrow 2-1 loss against North Geelong after some dubious linesman and referee calls, one which cost the side a goal. Coach Drago Skok is confident now that he has a solid team together victories will come. In Division 3 men’s, Waves have suffered two losses on the trot against Barwon Blue 5-1 and against Lara 2-1. Despite the losses, Coach Mal Jobson is confident with the return of a number of injured players, Waves can get back to their winning ways. Surfside Waves under 10s continue to face strong opposition from northern suburb teams, but improve as a team on a weekly basis. The side had a 15-6 loss over the Queens Birthday long weekend and a 3-2 victory over Bell Park this past weekend.
Stand-in Coach Glen Copperwaite was wrapped with the performance again Bell Park. “Thanks to the coach of Bell Park Yellow for lending us Josh - good sportsmanship - especially as he drilled home a goal against his own teammates,” Coach Copperwaite said. Under 17 Surfside Blue boys continue their strong performances on the field sitting in second place on the ladder following a 9-4 win against Barwon Blue and a 2-all draw again Lara Blue last weekend. U17 Surfside Red sits midpack on the ladder following an 8-2win against Lara Red and a 2-1 victory against Barwon Red last weekend. Following a week off Surfside under 15s went down 3-1 against, while the under 13 division one team have had a fortnight off and get back in action this weekend. Surfside’s under 13 division 2 side scored an automatic win last weekend when Corio failed to show-up to play. Surfside’s under 12mixed division 2 side played out a nilall draw against Surf Coast.

JOB WELL DONE: Division 5s after a deserved victory overThomson
At the Bendigo it starts with U. Are you part of the community? Silly question. Are you a bank customer? Another silly question. Are the two roles related? Now that’s an interesting question. For most Australians, community and banking are worlds apart. But since the Bendigo began forging its very individual form of bank service, a growing number of us are realising the profit to be had from linking the two.
As is often the case, it’s a disarmingly simple insight. Strong successful communities are dependant on strong successful individuals. To build one you must build the other. So what kind of bank is the Bendigo? Strong, successful and growing. Is this strength and success related to how we treat our customers and their communities? Now that’s a question you must answer for yourself. To find out more drop into the branch at Shop 6 & 7, Park Lane, Ocean Grove or phone 5255 4866.

junior grubbers Grubbers under 16s sides looking good at the halfway mark
‘Confident, attacking footy’ Under 16 (Division 2) The Ocean Grove Division 2 side played Inverleigh at home on June 6, knowing that a win would see them go a game clear inside the top four. The boys were confident going into the game after their strong performance the week before against Newtown, however they were jumped at the start by a quick Inverleigh outfit and found themselves 9 points down at quarter time. The second quarter was a little better with good ball supply getting to Full Forward Aaron Habgood, however his radar was a little off target and we entered the half time break still 2 points in arrears. If not for the feats of Dillon Haire and Aaron Hampshire in defence, the margin would’ve have been much worse. Knowing they had a game on their hands, the boys came out firing after the half time break with the mid field, led by Lochie Humphries, Dylan Thorley and James Bennett, finally getting on top. Jakey Heard, Andy Higgins and Azza Habgood teamed well in the forward line and with a four
goal to one quarter, the boys sensed a second successive win was on the cards. Although Inverleigh got the first goal of the last quarter to creep within two goals, the boys steadied and slotted the next four goals to run out 27 point winners 11.10.76 to 8.1.49. Aaron Habgood continued his good mid-season form with four goals, Andy Higgins kicked three and Jake Heard helped himself to two. Dillon Haire was best on ground for his work across half back, James Bennett was unstoppable on a wing after half time, and Lochie Humphries racked up the possessions all day to put in his best performance of the year. Against Lara at Lara last Saturday, the lads got off to an excellent start kicking the first four goals of the game to set up a 29 point lead at quarter time. With Aaron Habgood on fire kicking two, and Jack Rawlings and Andy Higgins with a goal apiece, the boys looked to be on song for a good day. In the second quarter the boys’ radar went astray, kicking 3 goals and 6 behinds but they
still went into the long break with a commanding 45 point lead. Dillon Haire and Nethaniel Giddings were impassable across half back and with the mid field on top led by Mitch Evans, a big second half was expected. Although not as dominant in the second half, the grubbers still outscored their opposition seven goals to five and coasted to a solid ten goal win 14.18.102 to 6.4.40. Azza Habgood finished with four goals, Jake Heard crumbed three very nice last quarter goals, Andy Higgins finished with three majors and Jack Rawlings two. Nethaniel Giddings continued his consistent form with a best on ground effort and big Jess Rapa continued his fine start to his football career by dominating the ruck contests and being very effective around the ground as well. With three wins on the trot now, Corbo has the team fit and playing confident, attacking footy which is a great launching pad for the second half of the season. Under 16 (Division 5)
Worthy of extra mention...
Tom Woodruff, midfield.
Matt Bean, centre half forward.
Adam ‘Ignitor’ Muir, wing.
Adam Long, ruck.
James Habgood, rover.
Jack Cadman.
The Ocean Grove Division 5 team played second on the ladder Bell Park 2 at home on June 6 and although the boys went down by 51 points 13.10.88 to 5.7.37, they played really good football for most of the game, indicating that a win is not that far away for these determined young men. The lads opened the game strongly trailing by only two points at quarter time and if not for some inaccurate kicking, they could have found themselves a goal or two in front at the first break. Tom Woodruff, Tom Lowry and Matt Blach owned the centre corridor, which forced Bell Park to kick wide to the wings. Full Forward Tom Digby presented at every opportunity and he was well supported by Nathan Madden who was a good target going forward as well. Peter Tregenza was unpassable in the last line of defence and James Habgood was his usual busy self around the packs. Although the boys failed to score in the second term, they were still within four goals of the opposition at half time and confident of
getting back into the game in the second half. Although we managed to kick four goals in the second half, Bell Park kicked eight to run away with the game and record a comfortable win. Best on ground Tom Lowry kicked two nice goals, as did Tom Digby, and Tom Woodruff and Matt Blach played their best games for the season. Against Thomson at home on Saturday morning the boys were primed for a big game after two promising performances in the last fortnight. Kicking into the breeze in the first quarter the boys toiled hard, led by Tom Woodruff in defence, and managed to restrict Thomson to just two goals, while we kicked one ourselves off the boot of Matt Bean. In the second quarter, the boys cut loose and with James Habgood controlling the midfield we piled on 6 goals to Thomson’s one to open up a 28 point buffer at the main break. The goal highlights of the second term were a Tom Digby snap from the pocket and a 50 metre special from Matt Bean.
Although the Grubbers were held scoreless in the third term, Thomson only managed 2 goals with the breeze, giving the boys a 13 point break at the last change. After a spirited address from the coaches, the Grubbers were desperate not to let this one slip and thanks to a ripper goal from Adam Muir from the club room pocket and two goals from Tom Woodruff, who was moved forward in the last quarter, the victory was sealed. The grubbers eventually ran away with the game to record a 11.9.75 to 6.6.42 victory. Best players for the game were Matt Bean and James Habgood in the middle, Tom Woodruff in defence and attack, Adam Long in the ruck and Macauley Kirsopp across the back flank. Channel 31 Community Television were present during the game to record footage of the victory and this can be viewed during their regular Football Geelong Junior programme on Friday morning (19/06) at 7am. Josh relishes responsbility for Grubbers HE may only be 21, but courageous youngster Josh Milnes is happy to take on extra responsibility with the Grubbers. While Ocean Grove lost Corey Normington, Wayde Piece and Sam Van Dueren all before the match with the flu, Milnes knew he had to make a stance in the trio’s absence. “There is a lot of us young kids who have played a few senior games and now we’ve got to stand up and show a bit of leadership,” Milnes said. “So we’ve got to take the onus us younger (players) and definitely stand up and do a bit more.” Like some of his teammates Milnes was never a certain starter before the match after being bedridden with the flu during the week. “I haven’t been at training all week, I’ve just been in bed and on the couch and had a bit of a fever and been real crook,” he said. “I felt pretty good yesterday
(Friday), I come up alright today.” Milnes, who played his 50th BFL senior match against Queenscliff in round seven is a home grown product of the Ocean Grove Football Club. The key forward played a pivotal role in the Grubbers’ Under 18 premiership in 2006. Co-coach Greg Mervin is impressed with the youngster’s effort to follow team instructions and his adaptability after switching from attack to defence. “He still worked hard at centrehalf forward and was a lead up target for us,” Mervin said. “We didn’t deliver the ball to him all that well, and I also think Modewarre played down his leading space. “We also talk about the change of role mid-game and I thought he did a good job when he went down back. “It adds another string to his bow, a bit more experience for him.” By Mark Heenan

By Mark Heenan OCEAN Grove remains on track for a top-three finish after a workman like performance against a spirited Modewarre at Ocean Grove Recreation Reserve on Saturday. The Grubbers (16.14.110) won comfortably to record a 34-point victory over Modewarre (11.10.76). Results from the other BFL Round 13 matches at the weekend fell in Ocean Grove’s favour as the Grubbers jumped into third spot on the ladder. Portarlington caused arguably the biggest upset of the season defeating finals contender Barwon Heads, while a gallant Torquay pushed Drysdale all the
way only to lose by one point. A thumb injury to key on-baller Ben Ricardo and the striking report of electrifying forward Paul Breguet put a dampener on celebrations after the match for Ocean Grove. Breguet was ordered to leave the field after a clash with a Modewarre opponent in the first half, while Ricardo is likely to be sidelined for the Grubbers’ mouth-watering clash against Drysdale this weekend. Touchline witnesses said Breguet had been himself been struck prior to the incident. “Probably a hairline fracture to the thumb, so probably three weeks for Ben,” Ocean Grove Co-coach Greg Mervin said after the match. “We talk about aggressive run
from behind the ball and he (Ricardo) is probably the number one exponent here, it is a big loss. “But someone has got to step up, it gives someone else a chance.” The Grubbers went into the match under strength after exciting utility Corey Normington, experienced veteran Wayde Piec and Sam Van Dueren were all late withdrawals with the flu. Despite late changes to its final line-up, Ocean Grove coach Matt Payne appeared subdued in the rooms after the match but simultaneously relieved with the final result. “We were just happy to win that game,” Payne said after the match. “We had a few blokes flat today and three blokes pulled out
on Thursday night. “Very relieved I thought the boys toughed it out. “We knew this was a danger game – we just had to win.” Ocean Grove midfielder Ben Kirk was amongst side’s best winning a number of contested possessions, while Ryan Aylward, James Johnston and Travis Gavin all played strong games. Grubber forwards Paul Breguet and Matt Jovanovic both kicked four goals apiece. Former Ocean Grove playing coach Mathew Sproule kicked four goals for Modewarre against his old side while Warriors’ teammate Joshua Finch booted three majors. Ocean Grove travels to Drysdale this Saturday. The game starts at 2:10pm.
