An artists impression of the Sound Shell or Performance Space that has been approved for planning by the City of Greater Geelong.
THE Ocean Grove Park Performance Space building has moved another step closer with the City of Greater Geelong, after the recent advertising of the proposal, issuing a planning permit for its development.
The estimated cost of the facility, including all connections to services, is $940,000 and the Ocean Grove Park Association, the manager of the park, has set aside $100,000 towards this cost. The President of the Association, Colin Atkins, said: “The next step is to seek the necessary additional $840,000 from every level of government, whilst financial support from community organisations and sponsors would be greatly appreciated, and would be
clearly acknowledged.” He also said “the full contract documentation of the project would now proceed ready for the calling of tenders when the funding was in place.” Cr Jan Farrell is delighted that the project has moved a step closer to delivering muchneeded cultural infrastructure in Ocean Grove. “The sound shell and attached facility will support the many and diverse groups in our community that engage in the arts, particularly our talented local young people. “I will be working alongside the Committee to secure funding for this fantastic project which will add to the wonderful lifestyle that we already enjoy in Ocean Grove.” Full story page 9

NOVEMBER 4 was a very upsetting and emotional day for Ocean Grove Mum, Sasha McLaren. After the normal hectic schedule of daycare, kinder, school drop off and work, Sasha allowed herself five minutes peace, sitting in the car in Asbury Street, waiting for school pickup around 3.20pm. Whilst enjoying this "me" time Sasha removed her wedding ring to apply moisturiser. The ring was placed in her lap whilst the hand cream dried and Sasha got ready to walk over to the school. Unfortunately, Sasha became distracted and hurried over to the school without replacing the ring. It wasn't until her daughter asked her where it was that she realised, with a numb feeling, that she had got out of the car with it still on her lap. The pair then raced back to the car but no trace of the ring could be found. Sasha said "Although the ring is custom made and valuable, it is the sentimental value that hurts most. Scott and I decided we wanted something unique and special to us for my ring and it's devestating to think I'll not see it again" If you have any information please contact Bellarine Police.
Road pledge LIBERAL Candidate for Bellarine, Kurt Reiter, says a Coalition Government will seal the dirt access road at Wallington Primary School at a cost of up to $50,000 if elected. Locals say the road is unsafe and pot holes develop regularly due to the twice daily traffic with parents dropping off and collecting their children. Recent rains have worsened the situation.

Anne Wilkinson and Marg Wylie take time out from their game to build a bridge for the community.
Bridge - minus the controversy BRIDGE will take on a whole new meaning on Saturday 27 November, when the Ocean Grove Bridge Club will be one of a number of community groups hosting a marquee to showcase their offering at the Community Showcase Picnic in the park. Also attending the picnic and looking to bridge a few gaps are the Ocean Grove Garden Club and the team pushing for a community garden for the town. June McLellan, Secretary of the Garden Club says they are on the
lookout for some new members and they may just find some in the community garden group. Marg Wylie is keenly anticipating the opportunity to turn the word bridge into a positive for the town of Ocean Grove. There will certainly be plenty of fun at the picnic, with a free sausage sizzle for kids, a magic show from Dazzling Dan, woodchopping, an animal farm and (wait for it) the Cubs with their Rope Bridge! Local councillor Jan Farrell, who has tipped in $3,000 from her
discretionary fund to cover costs for the day, said, ”This is a fabulous opportunity for everyone to find out about the great variety of local groups and to catch up before the Christmas madness starts.” The picnic day will be hosted by the Ocean Grove Community Enterprise, the Ocean Grove Community Association and the Ocean Grove Business Association, kindly supported by key partners Rotary and the Ocean Grove Park. The free event runs from 12noon until 3pm.
AN Ocean Grove woman completed a half marathon last Saturday to raise money for Malawi based organisation, Mphatso. Lena Johnstone decided to get fit before her upcoming move to Malawi in 2011 and before she knew it had dedicated herself to running 22 kilometers to raise money for local children in the African country. After weeks of training, Lena ran from Curlewis to Queenscliff, dubbing the unofficial event, ‘Run for Porridge’. “I aimed to raise $1000 but ended up with $1700 and that’s over 25,000 bowls of porridge,” she said.
A sad case of left luggage or lost art AN art installation on The Terrace during the Melbourne Cup long weekend has resulted in some unexpected controversy, writes Carly Heleg. Local music and art promoter John Bowman from the Piping Hot Chicken Shop drew inspiration from an art piece at Melbourne’s
Southern Cross Station and bought it to Ocean Grove during it’s pARTy weekend. John arranged a stack of random suitcases he collected from op shops around the lamp post in front of Ocean Grove Travel and called the installation, ‘Travelling Light’. John said that plenty of

locals and tourists had commented on the stack that had been secured to the post with wire. “It’s a bit of fun, the travel agents thought it was a bit of fun,” John said. However Geelong City Council were called in at the start of the week after a complaint by a local resident. “They came and threw it

I WAS born in Bermondsey, London, in 1929 to very hard working-class parents and grew up in a very rough area by the docks. Life was tough for the adults, but not for the kids. We had the River Thames to play in, barges to climb on and explore and ships to watch going under the Tower Bridge. School was a place to be avoided if possible – mum would drag me there by the scruff of the neck, kicking and crying, and make sure that I was taken in. Good days and bad. Then came the bad days – war! Very quiet at first but it soon hotted up. Long nights of bombing and the sound of the guns. For a boy of ten it was very frightening until it became another part of life and we just lived with it. Had fun digging shrapnel out of the roads and playing in bombed houses. Good days came with mum, two sisters and me being evacuated to the Midlands of England in 1943. Never having seen such large green open
spaces before put me in a very different world. The next few years were very happy, away from the London Docklands. Plenty of fresh air and space to move. Leaving school at 14 (a very happy day) with limited education, I went to work on a farm as a labourer for a couple of years. I then worked at the old “Standard Motor” factory in Coventry where they were producing engines for fighter planes. I moved back to London and worked as a plasterer on bomb damaged buildings until I was called for National Service in 1947 – another change in my life. My time in the Royal Navy was good and I learned to be independent, how to share limited living space with other men and I was taught discipline. These things stood me in great stead all through my life. Good days. I met my first wife, Joyce, in 1948 and we got married in 1950, after leaving the navy. We had a good life together in London and raised

three boys. There was something missing in our lives, but we didn’t know what. I was working as a teleprinter operator for “Cable and Wireless” at London Station, mostly on night shift and during the meal break I used to walk along The Strand to Australia House. It looked good so we applied and came here in 1962 as Ten Pound Poms and landed in Adelaide. After a while I joined
the Australian Army and served for 20 years which included a year in Vietnam. Sadly my first wife Joyce died a year before my army service was ended. I spent the next few years like “a ship without water” as friends put it. Then I met and married my wife Jean, also widowed and we have shared a happy life together for 21 years. It has been a long
learning journey of good and bad days, but now my days in Ocean Grove are very simple but good. My time in Ocean Grove has been taken up with RSL work, Senior Vice-President, President and Welfare Officer. Unfortunately I have had to cease due to ill health. I am also a long time member of the Ocean Grove Bowls Club and a member of Probus.

Dear Editor Apart from pre-election media opportunities, perhaps the reason for a hasty contest to name the Barwon Heads Pedestrian Bridge is because it isn't a Pedestrian Bridge. If you thought the Pedestrian Bridge was being built for walkers, for pram or wheelchair users and children under 12 to cycle safely, with or without their parents, and for anglers, their gear and room to cast a fishhook safely, you would be wrong. That describes a bridge with Footpath Status. Buried in the amended CoGG Planning Scheme, which facilitated a double-bridge development, are the words "for a separate cycling and pedestrian bridge running along-side, downstream." Our community has supported bicycles enough, they can Share The Road this time. A bicycle is a vehicle and the new Barwon Heads vehicle bridge will provide a bicycle lane in each direction for cyclists. Is the competition judging panel going to choose a name which quietly drops the word "Pedestrian" from view? I wanted to suggest the name DISMOUNT, but the Pedestrian Bridge name contest wasn't open to pedestrians. It was only for school children, who would be focussed on its first prize, a bicycle. I call on VicRoads and the Government, no matter who wins the State election, to give this community a Pedestrian Bridge that is genuinely for pedestrians and a low speed vehicle bridge that cyclists will choose to use. Arts community hope for State Government pledge
Sound Shell gets planning nod OCEAN Grove could have its own performance and rehearsal space in less than a year if state election candidates can get behind a community-generated project. Ocean Grove Park has already pledged $100,000 of its own money and is hopeful the item will be picked up by cashed up candidates over the next couple of weeks. A delighted Park Association president Colin Atkins said: “After 15 years of working towards a master plan which was developed even before we saved the park, we are absolutely delighted that we have reached the stage where, subject to funding this major item for the community in the park can go ahead. “The whole purpose of saving the park, which was a hard effort to raise the money, and also undertake all the work that we have done on it, such as the playground, was to develop the park into a community hub so that everybody can enjoy it. The main item now to complete our plan for that and to add to the existing infrastructure, is this performance space. “That would set the seal on really making it a great hub for the community and something the town
has been missing for quite a long time.” While there is no pledge yet, Bellarine member Lisa Neville said: “I congratulate the (Ocean Grove Park) Association on the work they have done in developing this proposal and I look forward to continuing to work with the council towards the realisation of this project.” The Proposal has been developed: •To provide Ocean Grove with a venue, permanently available for the use and enjoyment of the whole community; that complements, in function, location, scale and design, the Ocean Grove Park’s natural environment and passive recreational opportunities, as the ‘Natural Heart of Ocean Grove’. In particular to: •Provide a venue to nurture local and emerging artists. •Provide opportunities for all socio-economic and demographic sections of the community to participate in and enjoy a full range of performing arts. •Provide for concerts, repertory, workshops, other events and incidental community activities appropriate to the facility.
•To provide a flexible venue to accommodate a range of audience capacities to meet the needs of the community’s presentation of events. •To ensure any disturbance to the immediate neighbourhood is minimised by the location, alignment and design of the building and management of the activities presented, whilst contributing to the social and economic benefits of the community. The performance space has been designed as a compact flexible venue that, depending upon the activity proposed, will enable it to be used in four configurations: 1. The open area stage with the green room fulfilling its traditional roll for performers 2. The open stage expanded into the green room via the open incorporated operable door to allow for a larger ensemble for open air presentations 3. The open stage and green room combined to present smaller performances to audiences contained within the footprint of the total venue. For this configuration a portable wind barrier system has been designed. 4. The green room as a self-contained facility

for events presented to small audiences or for rehearsals, teaching performing arts or general community activities. Colin said that this configuration flexibility of space is intended to maximise the range of events and activities that the venue can accommodate and maximise its use and enjoyment by all sectors of the community, including holidaymakers when appropriate. A small kitchen has also been provided to meet the needs of the smaller
events with servery access to an adjoining landscaped deck. A 10,000-litre tank would be provided under the proposed deck to harvest the roof water for re-use. Both the Green Room and the stage have ceilings to enhance their acoustic properties to optimise the benefit to both musical and repertory performances. Facilities to accommodate stage lighting and sound equipment are also incorporated.

The debate, to pedestrianise or not WITH the impending redevelopment of the old Westpac building in The Terrace, public debate has sparked over the need for a public space for local fundraisers and events, writes Carly Helweg. The idea of blocking The Terrace between Presidents Avenue and Hodgson Street to traffic and making the space into a pedestrian only mall has received mixed opinion from local traders and residents. Paul Drake from the Ocean Grove Business Asscociation said that it wasn’t an idea they were discussing at the moment but the need for a community public space is an underlying issue in the town. “When the street is blocked off for various events there are mixed views from the traders,” he said. Whilst the area in front of the old Westpac building has been used in the past for events, Paul said that there is a real need for a community gathering space in the
heart of the cbd. “What we lack is a focus, a community hub. The area in front of Westpac has been a de facto area but with its redevelopment we will lose that.” Past structure plans for Ocean Grove have hinted at using an area between the Post Office and Zebra Bar as public space whilst rerouting traffic but Paul concedes that it may not be the right answer to the community space need. “Structure plans have included a community space but those structure plans don’t always come to fruition,” he said. Local identity and Bay FM radio personality Peter Mobbs is a supporter of the idea believing the closure of The Terrace to traffic could result in the street becoming a major draw card of the town. Mobbsy said that the change wouldn’t affect parking as much as people might think. “When I first moved here you could pull up in front of the newsagents and run in but these days
ADVERTISEMENT
you have to find a park out the back,” he said. “I think businesses will be spooked at first about not having traffic out the front but how often do you get a spot outside Bar Deli when you want to have breaky there?” Mobbsy said that the idea would have the best effect over summer with the opportunity to dress the street up with Christmas trees and decorations. He mentioned it might even encourage traders into late night shopping in the warmer months. “It could encourage clothes and food stores to set up tables and racks out on the street creating a market feel.” “It would create a real vibe and selling point for Ocean Grove, it’s an outdoorsy place and the tourists would flock to it,” he said. Do you think The Terrace should be pedestrian only space or know of any plans in the past to make it so? Email journo@ oceangrovevoice.com.
Allan Gilmour, Carpenter, Barwon Heads, 36: “It would be a bold move. The lack of convenience would drive you nuts though. It’s an interesting idea though that’s for sure.”
Madison James, Amcal, Ocean Grove, 18: “I don’t think it’s a good idea at all. It will harm business because people are lazy and they want the parking spot in the street right near the store they are going into.”
Joe Ellis, Elvis Parsley and Grapesland, Drysdale, 20: “It’s not safe for people to cross the road there so it would definitely work. It’s not necessary to have the parks in the main street. Night markets would be cool ... maybe it could just close on certain days.”
Linda Ryan, Pattison’s Jewellers, Ocean Grove: “I think it’s a bad idea. The beauty of the street is quick, half hour parking that moves people through, it’s nice and convenient. When they do block the street off it hinders business, so we would lose business from it.”
Isaac Fryar, Ocean Grove Cellars, Ocean Grove, 24: “It’s a stupid idea, it will most definitely harm traders. Without the drive through traffic, certain traders would suffer.”
Charlotte Malone, Writer, Ocean Grove, 37: “I don’t think it would hinder business as long as there was alternative parking. I think that it would make a lovely improvement.”
Jon Atkins, Adventurer, Ocean Grove, 40: “I’m in favour because there is ample parking only 10 seconds away. It would be more user friendly, better for kids and I don’t think shops would be affected as much as they think. I think they would make more money if it improved.”
Terry Mudge, Mudge’s Shoes, Ocean Grove, 55: “It doesn’t work in little areas, I wish it would but it doesn’t. When you lose cars you get the wrong people element. It becomes a ghost town and the wrong people come in, Geelong’s the perfect example.”

Snorkelling students
Christian College Year 9s. Christian College Year 9s snorkelling at St Leonard’s Jetty.
Year 9 Luisa Byrne from Wallington.
STUDENTS living on the Bellarine Peninsula have a tremendous opportunity to learn about and enjoy their unique environment. The Marine Studies course at Christian College Bellarine in Drysdale aims to encourage and enable students in their exploration of their local marine environments as well as investigating local and global marine issues.
An enjoyable and at times challenging highlight of the course is the snorkelling activities. Rays, urchins, sea stars, pipe fish and nudibranchs are among the wonders revealed as students explore the protected locations around the Peninsula. A recent experience for Year 9 students was a snorkel at the St Leonard’s Jetty. Wallington’s Luisa Byrne commented: “Although
it was cold I enjoyed seeing the marine life. We saw some amazing fish and eventually got the hang of breathing through a tube!” The skills learnt by the Christian College students will be put to good use when Luisa and her class mates experience a boat trip in November. The day will include snorkelling at Pope’s Eye, swimming with seals and observing the bay’s most funloving residents, dolphins.

Students Voice raises cash for art class A GROUP of enterprising Ocean Grove Primary School students raised more than $50 for the art room during their recent art show. The students, all members of
the school’s Students Voice, raised the money by selling cakes and bags of lollies. At assembly last week the Students Voice students presented a giant size cheque to
their grateful art teacher Robyn Jones. The art show itself was held over a Friday night and Saturday and displayed 460 art works – one from each pupil. This year
each grade did a different arts style. The grade 4s did ‘cubism’ and the grade 5s did surrealism. The art show itself raised about $2,500.
Class takes the waves
OCEAN Grove Primary School students have recently completed four weeks of surf and water safety awareness classes at Main Beach.
Under the guidance of local instructor and accomplished local national surfer, Heather Peck, the students were standing and riding waves by the end of the program. The
students were given the chance to do surf lessons rather than swimming for the four weeks of term.

state election
What’s on offer for the Ocean Grove residents are heading to the polling booths for the second time this year to vote in the Victorian State election on November 27. Sometimes Ocean Grove can get lost underneath the Bellarine umbrella so we gave the candidates the chance to focus exclusively on our town and how a vote for them will benefit us. Lisa Neville- ALP
What is your favourite thing about Ocean Grove? I’m sure it’s no surprise that I love Ocean Grove’s natural assets. The foreshore and beach is beautiful year round. I also love the strong
community values that underpin the town and its people. What will you provide Ocean Grove if elected? I will continue to advocate on the community’s behalf for more services and the infrastructure needed for the future. The Ocean Grove community will benefit from many of the commitments Labor has pledged to deliver, including: A $20 million duplication of the Bellarine Highway from Grubb Road to Banks Road; A new Summer Energy Concession to help take the financial pressure off eligible seniors; and More jobs and continued strong management of our state’s economy. For a full list of Labor’s policies and announcements visit www.vic.alp.org.au Will you give an ongoing presence in Ocean Grove if elected? I will continue to work in partnership with the Ocean Grove community to ensure they have the services and infrastructure they need.
Labor’s commitments in recent years has led to important developments including the new police, CFA and ambulance stations, the Bellarine Aquatic Centre and the Ocean Grove Campus of Bellarine Secondary College. How will you help to improve access to health services on the Bellarine? I will continue to advocate for strong and accessible health services on the Bellarine Peninsula. I am particularly proud of the state government’s recent assistance to HeadSpace Barwon to provide youth health services through a Bellarine Hub located centrally at the Potato Shed in Drysdale. Where is your favourite place to holiday? We have enjoyed many holidays locally around both the Bellarine Peninsula and Geelong, but I do recall recently going to a wonderful place with my son which happened to have no mobile phone receptionthe tiny Pacific Island of Nuie.
Stephen Juhasz, A Voice 4 Choice
What is your favourite thing about Ocean Grove? My favourite thing about Ocean Grove is the beach!! It’s great and I’m sure most people feel that way. It’s especially great to go for a walk around sunset with that special person in your life, sharing some time together and then have a quiet coffee or drink. I really like the friendly atmosphere that’s created by the warm generous people of Ocean Grove. It’s a great place with great people! What will you provide Ocean Grove if elected? I am passionate about real representation. My campaign slogan is
A VOICE 4 CHOICE and that’s what I will provide. We don’t have that at the moment. We just get told what we’re going to get. All the so called consultation the government talks about is just a sham. They don’t listen and to be frank they don’t really seem to care about people. The people of Ocean Grove deserve to get government of the people, by the people, for the people. Not of the party, by the party, for the party! We don’t need Spring Street Puppets who do as they are told and can never really represent the true wishes of their constituents. The job of an elected member is to represent their electorate and fight for their community. Will you give an ongoing presence in Ocean Grove if elected? Most definitely, I commit to holding regular monthly meetings in Ocean Grove where the residents can air any concerns or issues they have.
How will you help to improve access to health services on the Bellarine? The State Government has plenty of money that can be used to really help meet the needs of the community. If they have $1.3 billion to waste on a ticketing system that we didn’t need and another $1.3billion wasted on useless advertising, not to mention more spin doctors than we have paramedics then there is money to provide for what the community really needs... a small hospital on the peninsula. Where is your favourite place to holiday? I don’t really have a favourite place to holiday. I don’t get much of a chance to holiday, but when I do I love going to new places, meeting new people and if going overseas experiencing new cultures and trying new food. The world is an amazing place and I like seeing it. Judith Baldacchino – Greens What is your favourite thing about Ocean Grove?
My favourite thing about Ocean Grove is probably what everybody likes about it - the beach, the wide sands, the crisp clean water and the fascinating rock formations. What will you provide Ocean Grove if elected? My main policy is to restore the local Bellarine Council, which will provide Ocean Grove and other communities with jobs and commerce, and most importantly, the opportunity for local people to be involved in local decisions. It would also allow for locals to offer leadership in their community council and encourage the many environmental groups to connect in the one place. Will you give an ongoing presence in Ocean Grove if

state election
Bellarine’s biggest town? elected? I'm a resident of Newcomb at the moment and planning to relocate to St Leonards. I have a background and interest in coastal environments and want to continue to work with local environmental groups to conserve our unique flora, fauna and landforms. How will you help to improve access to health services on the Bellarine? My other main policy is to campaign for a hospital to be built somewhere in central Bellarine. This would provide local employment, reduce the pressure on Geelong Hospital, reduce the amount of traffic up and down the highways, and provide a quality medical service within reach of our growing population. I feel the goodwill of the people of the Bellarine has been stretched by the neglect of our medical needs by the current and past state governments, and that, as taxpapers, we are entitled to better health services than what we have been receiving.
B re
Given the expanding population, I believe it is urgent that we start getting a hospital service as soon as possible. Where is your favourite place to holiday? My favourite place to holiday is wherever my children are. Currently, my son lives in Japan with his Japanese wife and my two gorgeous grandchildren, who I desperately miss. So I try to get to Japan about once a year and that's my holiday. My daughter is off to Kashmir to make a film about a snowboarding school to divert young men from the Taliban. I don't think I will be following her there. Kurt Reiter- Liberal Party What is your favourite thing about Ocean Grove? To choose one is hard but if so - the views. That said, I love the people, the community spirit and the Blue Fin Café if only because of Alicia Withington! I am not a huge fan of the traffic light I have to admit –
in g u n cil t r p o r Co p u S n ce a C ast
or at least its sequence programming. What will you provide Ocean Grove if elected? I have several announcements that I am making closer to the election that I am confident will impress the residents of Ocean Grove. Sorry – no sneak peeks. Will you give an ongoing presence in Ocean Grove if elected? If elected, Sarah and I will move from our home town of St Leonards to Ocean Grove so that I can better understand the issues that face this growing part of the electorate. I think it would be selfish not to do so. That said, my passion
for St Leonards is pretty strong and my family are all here so I will need to get the roads fixed if I am to split myself across two wonderful pockets of the Bellarine. Moreover, I have committed, several months ago now that I would conduct monthly open town hall meetings to ensure that I do not hide behind electorate office workers and spin. Accessibility to office holders is critical and this will provide a great presence for Ocean Grove residents whether they see me in the street or not. How will you help to improve access to health services on the Bellarine? The Coalition has made serious announcements about health services including a commitment for 340 new Ambulance officers for the State including 44 new ambulance paramedics, 6 new patient transport officers for the Barwon South West DHS region and a new MICA Paramedic Unit. Where is your favourite place
to holiday? When you live in the Bellarine, you don’t tend to holiday in the Bellarine despite it being a wonderful tourist destination. I’ve traveled extensively, mostly for work, and find exploration of all destinations to be great. I suspect if I win I will not be holidaying anytime soon given the problems we face and that does not bother me – where we live is idyllic so I won’t complain. Do you own any pets? Yes, I have a cat who I adore. I’ve owned many pets over the years from dogs, birds, goats, mice, rabbits and the list goes on but given our busy lifestyle, one old cranky cat is perfect for us and he is, quite appropriately, spoilt rotten. Mitch Cherry –Socialist Alliance What is your favourite thing about Ocean Grove? I’ve always liked the surf beach. What will you provide Ocean Grove if elected? Socialist Alliance would
invest in a light rail network linking the Bellarine, Geelong and the Surf Coast. As well as greatly improving the frequency and operating hours of buses. I would also provide a climate conscious representative who understands the need for immediate action on climate change. Will you give an ongoing presence in Ocean Grove if elected? Yes. I believe that community consultation is a fundamental part of democracy. People should have the right to be able to talk to their politicians and have the ability to have a greater say in politics. How will you help to improve access to health
Shop 8, The Parade, Ocean Grove | Ph: 5255 3955
services on the Bellarine? Socialist Alliance would increase funding to decrease waiting lists as well as increasing places at University’s for Doctors and Nurses to ensure that Victoria has enough health professionals in the future. Socialist Alliance would also make sure that mental health services were being adequately funded to ensure that all people have access to free and high quality mental health services. Where is your favourite place to holiday? When I was younger and lived with my parents we stayed in a Cabin in the Tarra-Bulga National Park in South Gippsland. My great grandmother Karamoana was the first female caretaker of a national park at the then titled Tarra Valley Park. Compiled by Carly Helweg. * The Voice attempted to contact the Country Alliance and Family First candidates but was unsuccessful in gaining a response in time.

Ocean Grove Community Garden
A community garden for Ocean Grove has been raised in small circles in the community over recent years. An emerging group of keen gardeners have had discussions throughout this year to try to work out the best place for a community garden. Suggestions at this stage for garden space are the block behind the Ocean Grove Senior Citizens Centre. The processes of informal discussions with COGG and OGSCA have commenced. Community gardens are a quiet, family-oriented meeting area where people come together to grow healthy food and socialise. There are community gardens in Barwon Heads, Point Lonsdale, Portarlington, Torquay, Anglesea and a few in Geelong, with the Geelong West Community Garden having been operating for over 20 years. We are keen to hear your thoughts, feelings or ideas about having a community garden in Ocean Grove. Please feel free to contact Peter Gumley at peter.gumley@ bigpond.com.au to talk about your ideas or involvement within this project. The Community Garden group will be holding a meeting where we can tell you what’s been going on and you can give us your opinions or advice about building a garden. Date for this meeting will be advised in the near future. For now we would like interested community members to check out our booth on the 27th November at the Picnic in the Park. We welcome anything you have to say and want to include you in what’s going on.

Mentor and student will come together at the Queenscliff Music Festival this year to put on a show. Ocean Grove music acts Stephen McEwan and The Rustys will play a set together in a Local Showcase at The Shed on the Saturday morning of the festival. As senior VET (Vocational Education and Training) music teacher at Bellarine Secondary College, Stephen teaches The Rustys and said it was their idea to play together at the festival. “It will be me and my senior music class,” he said. Steven said that he was very proud of the young Rustys and what they have achieved in their short career. “They’re great kids, really down to earth.”
Ocean Grove Voice, November 17-30, 2010 - Page 19
Matt Blach from The Rustys said they were excited to be part of this year’s Queenscliff Music Festival. “We’re pretty stoked to be involved and we’re so looking forward to it.” Matt said personally he was looking forward to watching and drawing inspiration from band Vasco Era and singer Ash Grunwald, especially before playing their first acoustic set. “We’re playing an acoustic set so we’ve had to work out some songs,” he said. “It’s kind of random but we just went with it, it will be good to do something different rather than just going nuts like we usually do.” Catch Stephen McEwan and The Rustys at Queenscliff Music Festival on the last weekend of November.

Working with coastal communities caring for our environment The Corangamite Catchment Management Authority is working to keep the land and rivers around you healthy. We work in partnership with the community and environment groups on a range of programs to ensure a healthy catchment. Our projects include: Woodland recovery projects to protect bushland and wetlands. Fish protection projects to improve fish migration, and streamside fencing and native revegetation to improve river quality.
James Butteriss, Alexander Caldow, Emily Davitt and Ethan Franks.
Revegetation work along the coast to enhance native habitats and water quality monitoring within coastal estuaries. The CCMA offers incentives to preserve native vegetation along the coast, with funding available to protect native plants and grasslands. LAST month’s National Water Week concluded with a celebration of activities at McLeods Waterholes in Drysdale, organised by Waterwatch at the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CMA). Local children from Christian College Bellarine, St Thomas and Clifton Springs Primary Schools enjoyed the idyllic Spring weather. They were involved in a rotation of activities. The Waterwatch activity, allowed the students to survey the macroinvertebrate fauna found living in McLeods Waterholes. A diverse population indicated a healthy ecosystem
and a healthy waterway. Estuarywatch involved the students in identifying the sorts of animals that can tolerate a range of water salinity levels, from fresh water, to brackish estuarine to saline ocean water. The Marine Discovery Centre led the children through the “lifecycle” of plastic rubbish and how it all too often finds its way into marine animals’ “food” chains. Greening Australia explained the importance of indigenous vegetation to increase the biodiversity, which in turn allows an ecosystem to be balanced. Students transplanted seedlings to tubes and were
given the opportunity to take them back to plant at school. A highlight of the day was touching and learning about Australian reptiles from Snake Handlers Incorporated, Representatives from the Wathaurong Co-op passed around Aboriginal stone artefacts amongst the children. They talked about aboriginal life around McLeods Waterholes and coastal areas on the Bellarine Peninsula over the years. Christian College’s science teacher Deb Singleton was also presented with an award from Victoria Waterwatch for monitoring the local waterway, Peppermint Grove, for the last five years.

Well spotted Pardalotes I HAVE to thank Mr Bernard Giles for alerting me to the Spotted Pardalotes that have been nesting in his Ocean Grove driveway. These beautiful small birds have been using a poly-styrene plant pot as a nest for the past 18 years! Unlike it's name, Spotted Pardalotes are very hard to 'spot ' as they usually live in the high branches of gum trees. These birds have unusual feather combinations or markings as you can see in the photo. The wings, tail and head of the male Pardalotes are black and covered with small white spots. Males have a pale eyebrow, a yellow throat and a red back feathers. Females have similar but less obvious markings. The Pardalote in the photo is definitely a male as he has very distinct markings. Spotted Pardalotes are found in coastal areas where there are eucalypt forests. They feed on insects and also consume
the sweet exudate from leaves. The nest of the Spotted Pardalote is extremely interesting. The nest is a chamber or tunnel dug into soil or earth; hence the side hole in Bernard's plant pot is ideal! The pardalotes grow to 8-10 cms in length. They breed from June to January, and usually lay 4 eggs per clutch. Both males and females care for the young. So not only does the male look very good, he works hard as well. Pairs of Spotted Pardalotes make soft, whistling, distinctive calls to one another throughout the day which can carry for quite a distance. The Spotted Pardalote is sometimes known as the 'headache bird' because of it's continuous shrill call that it gives during the breeding season. I hope that they don't give Bernard too many headaches. By Jennifer Carr.

BARWON COAST
breeding zone west of 40W along 13th Beach, and around the Barwon Heads Bluff adjacent to the Marine Sanctuary. Barwon Coast has produced a dog brochure to help you understand the dog control orders and the City of Greater Geelong has produced a map (Walk Time) of its region with dog designated dog off leash, on leash and no go areas.
Scoop the Poop Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal Crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove, plus the Riverside Camping area.
Take the Lead........ As the weather improves with the summer months approaching, dog owners are keen to get out on the beaches with their dogs. The beaches in our region are managed by Barwon Coast on behalf of the State and we have a responsibility to try to ensure that every one using the coastal environment has a fair go, respecting other beach users in a harmonious and co-existing manner. As a responsible dog owner you would understand that you have a responsibility to ensure that your dog is well behaved and under control when on the beaches, as not everyone feels comfortable around dogs. We therefore have a range of areas declared available for dogs all year around; some areas available for part of the year and in some circumstances areas where dogs are prohibited all year around. These areas are clearly identified on the beach access information signs on the inland side of all formalised beach access tracks. Dogs must be on a leash on all formalised beach access tracks. Area's where you can take you dog all year around include most of the beach area east of Hodgson St (13W) Ocean Grove and most of the beaches along 13th Beach west of 30W down as far as 40W towards Black Rock. In these areas your dog must be under effective control at all times which means that whilst off a leash, your dog must be in your sight and under voice command. You must be mindful that your dog might rush up to another animal or person and if your dog does not respond to your voice then it is not under effective control. Areas where dogs are prohibited all year long are notably the Hooded Plover
Along with other rubbish, dog faeces generally end up being washed into the river and the sea. Dog droppings can contain harmful bacteria and nutrients and parasites. Toxocara canis is the roundworm that is found in dog faeces, and can be passed onto humans. Research has shown that the more people experience inappropriate actions by dog owners in public places, the worse their opinion is of dog owners overall, leading to greater pressure for more legislative controls. Cleaning up after your dog is part of being a responsible dog owner. Barwon Coast provides free dog poo bags at appropriate access pathways for you to use so that you can pick up after your dog. We ask that as a responsible pet owner you will ensure that the contents of the bag are disposed of in an appropriate manner by either placing in the rubbish bins we provide along our coastline, or by taking the bag home and disposing of it in your own rubbish bin. Being a responsible dog owner will mean that all beach users including shorebirds, seals and other protected wildlife all get a fair go. So take the lead; do the right thing and enjoy the beach with your dog in the designated areas. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1118. Storm: Warrnambool Junior Seaside Classic 2010 U12 Division 1 Champions
Storm: Warrnambool Junior Seaside Classic 2010 U12 Division 1 Champions.
Storm wins in Warrnambool THE new under 12 girls Storm team have taken out the division 1 grand final at the Warrnambool Seaside Classic earlier this month. Coached by former Under 16 VC Girls coach Brendon Matthews the girls finished 2nd in their pool with wins over Hamilton, Warrnambool and Port Fairy and a narrow loss to Colac, but in the rematch with Colac in the grand final the girls won by 10 points and lead for the entire game. A Fantastic start to the season should have the girls ready for the Friday night grading phase
commencing on the 19th of November. Team - Mali Herzer, Raini Matthews, Georgia White, Georgia Mckinnon, Zoe Saunders (MVP), Phoebe Potter, Teagan Tatlock, Lucy Mcevoy and Vanessa Marsh. Head Coach Brendon Matthews and assisted by Bree Matthews. The under 14 side also did remarkably well, earning a Runners Up place at Warrnambool Seaside Classic in the girls division 1. After a great pre qualifying stage where amongst others Storm beat Warrnambool by 26
points, a team they had never beaten before, they then went into a semi final against Colac confident of success. The side was good enough to get over Colac by 6 points and faced Millicent the other undefeated team in the division 1 final. As expected it was a tough and physical game from the start and Storm had their noses in front for most of the game. Unfortunately with 10 seconds to go they hit the front for the first time in the game and we were unable to score with the last play of the day.
The girls all performed really well and should all hold their heads high, with grading about to start for the VJBL season all looks good for a successful year. Team-Eliesha Montgomery, Holly Montgomery, Carly Sanders, Lily Smith , Jordon Finlayson, Emily Baker, Chelsea Able, Maddy Clifton, Jemma Potter As the start of the grading phase for the VJBL season is just around the corner, we wish all Bellarine Storm teams the best of luck for a great year ahead.

SOUL’s elite junior training weekend with Grant Thomas.
THE final comp of the13th Beach Boardriders 2010 season was finally held on Sunday in contestable 2-3ft waves at Beacon. Supported by the Greenroom, this final competition held the hopes and dreams of many club members. With competitors in most divisions separated by just a few points, a good performance in this last event could snatch overall victory from their rivals. With final results not announced until the club presentation night, many surfers will be on tenderhooks waiting for them. Finalists for this last competition for the season were: Under 13’s: Billy Harrison, Tom Harrison, Larry Willett, Henry Hutchins, Bronson Field, Fergus Willett Cadets: Myles Fletcher, Austin Haire, Will Dickson, Tom Harrison, Darcy Berry, Sam Everitt Junior Women: Jemima Hutchins, Sapphire Maine, Cassie Vincent, Grace Robertson Junior Men: Banjo Harfield, Gus Harfield, Ethan Harbison, Willis Harrington, Cody Zinn Open Women: Lizzy Ryan,
SOUL Longboard club conducted its Elite Junior Training at the weekend with former world top ranked longboarder Grant Thomas. Grant, who is also head Longboard coach at the Australian Surfing Academy High Performance camp, conducted sessions at 13th beach on the Saturday and Ocean Grove on Sunday. Grant took the juniors, who are among the top ranked in the state, through a number of sessions both in and out of the water. Each session was used to reinforce the points that Grant had gone over with them beforehand and all sessions were videoed so they could see the techniques they were putting
in place. Grant was genuinely impressed with the standard of the surfers and could see plenty of potential and improvement over the weekend. SOUL club president Brian Tucker said: “The club wanted to expose these junior surfers to some of the best training we could provide and Grant has the runs on the board there. These juniors are the future of Victorian longboarding so it only makes sense to try to help develop their potential. This weekend was provided free to SOUL members and a small fee to non members. It was great to see the kids really involved in the total aspect of the sport.”

Britt becomes new director at Ocean Grove Netball Club JO Britt has replaced the outgoing Vanessa O’Callaghan as the new Director of Netball at Ocean Grove in 2011. Britt was voted in as the new Director of Netball at the Ocean Grove Football and Netball Club’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday October 31. Britt, a physical education teacher at St Alysious Primary School in Queenscliff, was asked to nominate as a Director of Netball at Ocean Grove. The mother of four also has a sports administration background. Britt spent three years as secretary of the Bellarine Peninsula Basketball Association and worked as a secretary with the Ocean Grove Junior Tennis Club. “We have lost a few players at the club, some of which have gone to St Joseph’s, so the process now will be to build the netball club up again,” Britt told the Ocean Grove Voice last week. “I’ll be trying to get as many parents involved next season and hoping to get more players to come down and play.” Meanwhile the Ocean Grove Netball Club is still searching for interested participants for the 2011 season. The Grubbers’ netballers commenced their pre-season earlier this month with regular sessions being held every Thursday until mid December at the club’s netball courts and the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club. For more information on the netball pre-season schedule contact Ocean Grove senior netball coach Tracey Thorley 5255 2970.

State grade student
SURFSIDE Primary school’s Byron Taylor is a class act on and off the cricket field. The year-six student who is one of the elected school captains at Surfside Primary School, earlier this month won selection in the Victorian Under 12 state cricket team. Byron, who plays junior cricket at the Collendina Cobras, will now prepare for School Sport Australia Event Championships for Victoria which takes place in Canberra from January 7-14 in 2011. The Ocean Grove local who describes himself as a batting allrounder, made the final squad of 13 of Victorian Under 12’s team, a selection process that started back in March. “I found out I was in the (final) squad of 13 over two weeks ago, from now on we are having practice matches in the lead up to the event,” Byron said. “The (Victorian Representative team) are hoping to get a training session every Sunday through November and December – there will be a lot of travelling to do.” Byron’s strong performances with the Collendina Cobras over the past year have caught the attention of Victorian team selectors. “In our club cricket I open the batting - I find my strengths are
square of the wicket and I like to nudge around for the singles,” Byron said. Once he returns from Canberra, Byron will play for the Under 14’s Barwon Rockets team in the Commonweath Bank State Championships to be held in Melbourne and Geelong. Last season Byron played a huge part in getting his Collendina team through to the Under 13’s Royce section Grand Final. Although the Cobras lost to Geelong City Navy in the season decider, Byron, who captained Collendina, had a brilliant season with the bat scoring 245 runs at a staggering average of 81.67 – the league’s second highest run scorer. He also captured 10 wickets with the ball @ 8.7 including returning his best figures of 2-3. Byron has continued to shine with the Cobras this season, in his first three matches the talented all-rounder has not been dismissed with the bat and has taken four wickets with the ball. Earlier this year Byron was named in the Geelong Cricket Club’s 2010 Emerging Players Squad, known as the Bakker Squad, in honour of Geelong

Key man GUN Cobra recruit Corey Walter starred in Collendina’s A-Grade win over Portarlington in Round three of the Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association. The former Victorian Premier League Geelong thirds player who returned to Collendina this season, top scored with 55 and then backed it up with the ball taking 3/27 off his 7.2 overs. Collendina A-Grade, who lost their opening two matches of the season to Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove, made 151 from their 40 overs to capture their first win of the season. In reply, Portalington fell 22 runs short of Collendina’s target and were bowled out for 129 in reply. The talented 19-yearold Walter has been forced to shoulder an extra workload in the
absence of strike bowlers Luke Veitenhiemer and Michael Fabris and allrounder Will Handley. Walter batted at no.3 and opened the bowling for the Cobras against Portarlington. Collendina co-coach Eddie Ellwood said Walter had made an impressive start to the season and said his experience with Geelong last season would benefit the Cobras enormously. “Corey has definitely been up to it at the moment and done very well especially in the bowling area,” Ellwood said. “He bowls medium pace and shown improvement with his bowling.” Experienced bowler Jamie Brennan showed

some positive signs with the ball against Portarlington taking 2/9 from his seven overs that included four maidens. Ellwood said he was
looking forward to the challenge of playing some two-day fixtures prior to Christmas. Round two and Round three games were reduced
to one-day fixtures because of rain. “We’d love be playing some games in the two-day format at the moment,” he said.

Zac 214
Zac Henderson.
RISING Ocean Grove cricketer Zac Henderson is quite literally piling on the runs, writes Mark Heenan. Saturday November 6 was a significant day in the life of 15-year-old Zac, who plays Under 17’s and senior grade cricket at the Grubbers, after he amassed 214 runs in one day of cricket. Zac smashed an impressive 122 in the morning against Newcomb and District, and then in the afternoon he made the Jan Juc bowlers suffer in the blazing heat after blitzing his way to 92 in Ocean Grove’s B-Grade. The Bellarine Secondary College Drysdale campus student was thrilled with how the day’s events unfolded. “I have not made no where near as many runs in one day, it just seemed to all came together on the day,” said Zac, who
also made a century last season against Barwon Heads in the Under 17’s Everett grade. “From batting in the morning (after making 122) I didn’t even want to bat in B-Grade in the afternoon, and when I went into bat I just started seeing the ball like a balloon - I was loving it. “I made a hundred (in the juniors) last year and then we came out and bowled in the seniors, so that’s what has usually happened to me – I haven’t really batted twice in a day.” Since he moved to Ocean Grove from Bendigo more than three years ago, Zac has developed a close connection with the Ocean Grove Cricket Club and he is considered
one of the club’s most promising young cricketers. Zac, who stands at nearly six foot tall, last season made his debut with the A-Grade Grubbers at the youthful age of 14. “It was a great experience for me to play against the best players and bowlers in the whole area and facing them with my batting,” Zac said. “It prepared me well for the future.” His father Darren has been a regular in the C-Grade at the Grubbers for a number of seasons. Zac and Darren played a C-Grade match together during the 2008/09 season and also a one off A-Grade fixture last season against Barwon Heads, but the pair are yet to bat together. Ironically Zac was the next person to bat when Darren scored a hundred two seasons ago against Geelong West.
“I made a 100 and the other bloke I was batting with made 96 and went out,” Darren said. “But (our team) were trying to declare and get the other team in to get some wickets before the next week. “We had plenty of runs on the board when the last wicket went and Zac was about to come out to bat with me and ‘I’d said:‘Let’s get in and bowl’ as we were trying to get some wickets. “That was an opportunity to bat with him, but I’d like to think it will still happen, but I don’t know how I’m going to get into A-Grade.” Zac, a keen footballer and scuba diver, is a member of the prestigious 2010 Geelong Cricket Club Bakker Squad and he has played representative cricket for the Barwon Rockets.

Grubbers on the march OCEAN Grove A-Grade scored a resounding 89-run win over Jan Juc in Round three of BPCA matches on Saturday November 6. Jan Jac sent the Grubbers in to bat first in the 40 over a side revised one day match at Jan Juc Park. Opener Dean Gills top scored with 53 for Ocean Grove, while all-rounder Michael Kenneady (32) provide valuable
support. The visitors finished with 9/154 from their 40 overs. In reply, Jan Juc were never in the hunt and were bowled out for a paltry 65 from 26 overs. Ocean Grove’s new ball opener Rhys Zanoni finished with 2/19 from his eight overs while Grubber captain coach Lucas Cameron claimed 2/21 from his six overs. Michael Gill and Shaun Branniff played a major role in the win both collecting three wickets apiece.

“Don’t let Dad win” - Lukas, Steve and Jackson Bentley training on the steps at the Ocean Grove Lookout.
ON Sunday a couple of teenagers from Ocean Grove took ‘challenging Dad to a race” to a new level. Jackson and Lukas Bentley decided to race their Dad, Steve, to the top of Eureka Tower in Melbourne. Competing in the annual fundraiser for the White Lion Foundation the three guys raced 1295 others up the 1958 steps of the 300 metre high building……that’s 88 floors! You may remember Steve Bentley as one of Geelong’s triathlon elite who, along with brother Tim, has won many triathlons around Australia and the World. It appears as if Steve’s sons are primed to take over from ‘Dear Old Dad’. 18 year old Jackson was 9th individual overall and winning the 12 to 18 y.o. age group in a fast time of 10 minutes 51 seconds. Lukas, aged 16, doing his first stair climb, came 4th in the same age group in 13.14, an impressive 64th overall. Steve who has now turned 50 still came an impressive 26th overall, winning the 50 plus age group in a ‘not to tardy’ 11 minutes 43 seconds. The event raised $167,000 for White Lion which helps young people connect with the community. Fastest male of the day was Scott McTaggart from Canberra in 8.30 and Victoria Mitchell was fastest female in 10.41.
