CONFIDENCE Picked a perfect day OCEAN Grove community groups got together on Sunday to celebrate and showcase the best of the town. Ocean Grove Park was the venue for a a community picnic - a boulevard of clubs and associations who rarely meet each other yet do similarly great things in the community. Supported by Community Enterpise and Rotary, the
event featured everyone from the Scouts and the Disabled Surfing Association to the Country Women’s Association, Coastcare, Bellarine Community Health and the Men’s Shed, to name just a few. The event was suggested by councillor Jan Farrell and has been coordinated by Richard Grimmett.

ONE of the biggest commercial developments in Ocean Grove promises to bring exciting new business to the area, according to its developer. Simon Sykes, who has already played a big part in the growth of the industrial estate, is now playing a part building its conversion to a business and retail park. He said the future for Ocean Grove lays in the estate, or iGrove as it is now called, and it seems retailers agree, with all the new spaces fully leased before the final walls went up on a $3 million development last Friday.
“This is really the start of it. This is all going to be business. They’re building another nine buildings all up on the other blocks,” he said. Simon believes the development will provide a valuable outlet previously unavailable to commercial businesses. “There’s nothing like it. You’ve got to have the space. We’re trying to make it so it’s not just industrial,” he said. “They’re new and really good quality buildings which will hopefully encourage more business.” Grove’s changing industrial estate page 13.

Boot full of bargains OCEAN Grove Park was buzzing with the sound of eager bargain hunters on Saturday morning. More than 50 sellers booked in for the Ocean Grove Park car boot sale fundraiser, enjoying some rare autumn sunshine and a steady flow of shoppers. Stalls lined the entire oval shaped lawn area, with a few extras joining the park committee’s own white elephant stall in the centre. Saturday’s turnout came close to matching Easter’s 60-plus stallholders. The park boot sales raise money for the improvement and continued upkeep of the park. The January Tranquility Fair is the park’s largest fundraiser of the year. Pictured left, bargain hunters at Saturday’s car boot sale.

its 51st year at the iconic Bells Beach. “(Mick) was a nice guy to talk to,” Taylor said. Taylor was in a great position for a photo after the presentation ceremony where Fanning was awarded with the Bell. “I walked up the stairs and
got near the presentation area and got hold of Mick to get the photo,” said Taylor. “It was a good feeling to be there on the day of the final. “It was my first time at the Rip Curl Pro.” Taylor also plays football at the Ocean Grove Football Club.

Footy’s good for the town
Fans flock to derby LOCAL footy fans flocked to Ocean Grove in droves for the Bellarine Football League Easter Round weekend on April 7. Football Geelong, who governs the Bellarine Football League, has an agreement in place for the BFL coastal towns which includes Queenscliff and Portarlington to play home games across the Easter weekend. The crowds overflowed across at Draper Street as numerous netballer followers lined the courts. Ocean Grove Football Club president Geoff Cunningham said the day was a massive cash windfall for the Grubbers.
He said the club’s Easter fixture at Ocean Grove along with their home match against Battle of the Bridge rivals were the most profitable and biggest drawing home games for the season. “It is good for local tourism as well as the club – the crowd really gets behind the game,” he said. “We get heaps of people staying down at the caravan parks in the area who attend the game on the day. “For us it is a very important game for the club to start the season.”
The other bonus for the Grubbers was there was no Geelong Football League or Geelong District Football League games played across the Easter weekend, which means all local focus turns to the BFL. Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor agreed it was a great initiative for his side to play a home game on the Easter weekend. “It is fantastic what the league does, give the coastal towns a home game every Easter,” McGregor said. “So we can get new money into the competition, I think both sides put on an awesome display, I don’t think anyone that came on the day won’t be back next year.”
Leonardo Di Caprio and now working on the set of The Blinder in Torquay, Thompson is better known for his roles in The Man from Snowy River, Star Wars and Australia than for his musical talent. Post office face retires THE smile on Brian’s face reminds most of us why it’s great to live in a small community. But after 32 years behind the Ocean Grove post office counter, the man with the old school charm has stamped his last envelope. Brian has retired. In total he’s been with Australia Post for nearly 44 years and has seen plenty of changes in the communications industry. “I started doing telegrams in Camperdown in May ’68. Then in January ’69 I went to Melbourne and did a six month course to work on the counter. From there I went to Winchelsea and worked as relief staff until I came here in 1980. “It’s been an honour to be part of the community,” he said. “You meet so many nice people. “I will miss it, there is no doubt about it.” Locals will still see Brian around as he will continue living in the town. He’s also got plans to make the most of his retirement. “I’ve got a bucket list. I’ll start off quietly. I’ve got some travel plans. I’ve not been out of Australia yet. “I’ll be enjoying retirement and hope to learn some new musical instruments.” Brian plays the bagpipes and is also enlisted to play at ceremonies in the town and region. He also has some plans to do some voluntary work.

Another world Catriona Heath in Liberia.
CATRIONA Heath sits in her Ocean Grove backyard, her recent deployment as a Child Protection Specialist in Liberia seemingly worlds away. And, as she explains, life in the Grove could not be more opposite. Catriona’s own personal journey began with an awareness of others and a desire to learn. “I was always aware of disadvantage and also aware of my privileges, of having a Grammar school education and University degrees,” she said. “I was always mindful that I wanted to use that to
help people without those advantages. I think it’s just in you, it’s always been in me to do this kind of work, whether it’s here or overseas.” Whilst studying anthropology Catriona began working with refugee youths in Canberra. She said over the next decade her understanding of the challenges they faced assimilating deepened. “They’re still living with their parent’s values then after completing three years of schooling in Africa in our system because they’re 16 we put them straight into
year ten,” she said. “They’re so great to work with, as a youth worker it’s the most rewarding kind of work as they’re so motivated. They want to be the Prime Minister of Australia and then they get into math and they can’t do it.” “If you’ve only done three years and you go straight into year ten, it doesn’t matter how hard you work math is incremental; you can’t just grasp an understanding,” she said. Last year Catriona applied to RedR an aid company who on behalf of the UN specialise in recruiting people for global emergencies. After successfully being added to their roster she was deployed to Liberia for six months after violence on the Ivory Coast forced 180,000 refugees to flee to a Liberian camp. As the fourth poorest country in the world with an employment rate of 5 per cent Catriona explained she found herself unable to accept the extreme poverty. “The lack of basic amenities was something
Catriona has made good friendships with her colleagues during her time in Liberia.
I never got used to. They didn’t have rich areas and slums; it’s all just incredibly poor,” she said. “There wasn’t any running water, no electricity, even in the capital city.” “All you see every day is dust and lactating dogs and mud huts,” she said. “I mean for me it was blissful to come back where everything is laid on, every type of food you would want, heating, cooling running water; there’s just such comfort here especially in Ocean Grove and this house,” she said. “I thought I would have cultural adjustment problems coming back but I didn’t. I was just straight
into it day one. I think this was because it never became normal to me, that level of poverty.” Catriona said an experience like that changes your whole perspective on life as you appreciate every single thing. “I visited a friend who has an eight-year-old son and she was arguing with her partner over whether or not they should give him vegemite, they’re really healthy and they asked me what I thought,” she said. “And this was after me working in Canberra with youth refugees and I said honestly who gives a s… if you give him vegemite or not it’s not important.” By Jessica Grace.

The Ocean Grove Business Association’s last meeting was held on Thursday April 5 at Ocean Grove Bowling Club. BEAR Program The Business Expansion and Retention Program (BEAR) has received some funding from community grants through the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre. Peter Kenyon, the facilitator of this program, has been away in New Zealand and Perth and on his return we will get the program underway. Racing Day proposal Geelong Racing Club has put forth a proposal to OGBA that a race day meeting be held at the Geelong Racecourse sometime in March 2013. To be successful, this would need 8 local businesses, (there
being 8 races on the race day), to contribute $1400 each business, and have a horse race named after their company/business name. Each business would then invite 8-10 employees or friends to the race meeting. Please let President Helen Butteriss know on 5255 5077 if you are interested. Community Directory Ocean Grove Business Association together with Ocean Grove
Neighbourhood Centre will produce a Community Directory soon. This will be delivered to all residents in Ocean Grove. Tidy Towns Competition The Tidy Towns Competition is on again and we feel that Ocean Grove should enter, if not this year, their next year. Our committee is following up on criteria and closing dates for entries.
Ocean Grove Frenzy Ocean Grove Business Association would like to form a subcommittee to help organise this years Ocean Grove Frenzy to be held on Melbourne Cup weekend in November. Local athletes can lead way in understanding Zane McKenzie praised Ocean Grove Football Netball Club players who attended a recent disability and awareness training night.
OCEAN Grove Football Netball Club undertook a disability and awareness training night to generate more understanding for the new all abilities team. The program run by Leisure networks uses personal stories, practical activities and direct experiences of what living life with a disability is like to reach its audience. Presenter Zane Mckenzie was born with a severe physical disability. He said the decision by the girls to attend the training reflected their ability to generate
change. “The fact that you are here shows that you care. You can make the change and difference in a disabled person’s life,” he said. “You can make new friends with skilled and interesting people.” Evan Priest the co presenter has been working with the disabled for years and said that it doesn’t make you a bad person if you’re not sure how to best approach certain situations. “I look back and think oh god that was so wrong, but it doesn’t make me a bad person. You learn that it
is fear of the unknown that often causes you to react in certain ways,” he said. “Sometimes in our efforts to be inclusive we actually exclude people.” Zane and Evan both encouraged the group to treat the new all abilities team in the same light as the other teams and not to have pre existing notions of their capabilities. As Zane explained it’s not about preventing people from making mistakes or failing, it’s about being inclusive all the same.
Bridging the gap, Dunes to Heads OCEAN Grove Country Women Association (CWA) Nightlights branch is organising a Women Walk the World in conjunction with other women across the world. The idea is to give support to the women and girls in Third World countries who must walk many kilometers each day to collect water for their families. The local walk will take place on Sunday April 29 from the Dunes Café car park and along the track to the bridge and on to At the Heads. The walk is being staged simultaneously in many countries to promote good health and awareness of women in developing countries. The walk starts at 10am and men are welcome to walk too. Funds will also be raised for women in developing countries. Foreign currency also accepted.

good friday appeal
Grove hauls in nearly $35k
Due to its outstanding results, Ocean Grove regularly appears in the live television crossover on Good Friday.
BEAUTIFUL weather combined with a worthy cause saw Ocean Grover’s collectively raise $34378 for The Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday appeal. “It was an absolutely tremendous effort that everyone should be very proud of,” said appeal area manager Alistair Drayton. The action began on Good Friday eve with The Mex’s annual bar auction. “They raised some $5500 together with a number of raffles and Bay Fm’s Mark Hyland ran a very good show providing plenty of humour,” said Alistair. The CFA brigades of Ocean Grove and Mannerim conducted a tin shake throughout their respective communities
By JESSICA GRACE and they raised in excess of $15000. Ocean Grove Fire Brigade’s Peter Baxter said that people were once again more than happy to get behind the fundraising efforts. “We filled about 30 tubs. It was beautiful weather and everyone was really, really generous. Everyone just gave with everything,” he said. “It was unbelievable; they were emptying their consoles full of coins.” “We’ve had a big day. Instead of going to each individual street we hit the beach and on a day like today it was packed,” he
said. The supermarket donation wells collected $2161 throughout the year, Collendina Holiday Park conducted their own annual ‘hole in one’ competition and raffle and raised $2884, while Ocean Grove Bowling Club conducted their traditional auction and raffles on Good Friday Night, raising more than $8,000. Alistair said this was a magnificent achievement which they continue to better each and every year. “All in all the Ocean Grove Tally Board again looked extremely pleasing with a total of$34,378. “Well done to everyone involved on another fabulous effort,” he said.

Filling backpacker gap By JESSICA GRACE When you think of backpacking friendly initiatives like CouchSurfing, London or Canada seem more likely to host globetrotting adventurers then Ocean Grove. However for several years now David Pownall, an avid Ocean Grove cyclist, has opened his home to fellow world cyclists as part of the WarmShowers program. The program allows cyclists to find other riders happy to provide them with hospitality and accommodation whilst on their journey. David said he found out about the initiative when he was browsing some touring bike forums. “I thought this was a great idea and decided to join. Firstly to help people out when touring Australia,” he said. “Secondly to be able to tell them a bit more about the country and finally I hope when I tour overseas I might get some hospitality in return.” David’s guests have

included French couple Sophie and Jean-Pierre who were riding around Australia to raise money for a school in France. Kerstin and Jens also stayed with them. They had been on the road for more than two years. As did a French family including their two children. Most recently David
hosted British couple Tom and Rachael who are riding from Adelaide to Cairns to raise money for cancer research. David said when his guests arrive he likes to take them to Grove’s hot spots. “I take them around 13th beach, to the lookout at the main beach, the Bluff at Barwon Heads and on a
Thursday or Friday night I like to take them out,” he said. “I usually shout people to a night out at the Sandbar.” With only positive experiences to date David said he would recommend Warm Showers because it’s a great way to meet new people and showcase the coast, especially Ocean
Grove. “The people I’ve hosted come from a wide range of backgrounds; from doctors to students and they all have great stories to tell,” he said. “Most of the people I’ve hosted come predominantly from Europe, France and Germany so you learn a lot about those countries.”

Chat and snack in the park OCEAN Grove’s second annual picnic in the park achieved its aim - bringing the commuity together. Glorious sunshine helped local groups make the most of the networking opportunity by getting to know other community clubs and asssociations. The picnic also featured kombis, a lions club sausage sizzle, face painting, a scouts rope bridge and wood chopping.
The event was supported by Ocean Grove Community Enterprise and Rotary, as well as local councillor Jan Farrell. Organiser Richard Grimmett thanked the groups that took part and said: “We look foward to keeping this going in future years. “It has been terrific.” The Community Enterprise also used the event to present the latest round of grants. Build from the floor up
Adam and Dahna Little outside their new flooring business in Sykes Place.
WITH the population growth on the Bellarine Peninsula set to increase by over 40,000 people in the next five years, local residents Adam and Dahna Little have the Bellarine people firmly in their minds as they open their new business, Bellarine Flooring. They have also chosen to set that business up in Ocean Grove’s changing and growing business and retail park - iGrove. Adam and Dahna have over 25 years’ experience in
the industry and their new Sykes Place showroom is the largest of its kind on the Bellarine Peninsula. “With the population growth on the Bellarine, we really wanted to offer residents, builders and tradespeople a close, convenient product at a competitive price”, says Bellarine Flooring Director Dahna Little. “We want to offer everyone that old fashioned personalised service, tailored to each individual request”, she says.
Bellarine Flooring will offer a variety of products including domestic and commercial carpet, solid timber, vinyl and laminate/ floating flooring. Also within these product lines Bellarine Flooring offers carpet tiles, quality carpet seconds, timber decking, bamboo, cork and an installation service. With over 600 different styles and colours in carpet alone, everyone’s lifestyle needs and desires will be catered for.
Growing more diverse THE continued growth and development of Ocean Grove has carried through to its now bustling industrial estate. Once home to mainly light industrial, in recent years the park has attracted retail as well as a children’s play centre and an undertakers. Now with the addition of several health and wellbeing businesses - and a music rehearsal studio - the scene is changing further, and it’s pulling in business, according to local traders. Eric Vosloo of Body Torque said in the past four months the increase of visitors has been particularly noticeable. “There’s a lot of traffic,”
By JESSICA GRACE he said. “We have clients from all over the Peninsula, Queenscliff, Point Lonsdale, Barwon Heads even Torquay and Geelong.” “There is a lot of potential. I wouldn’t be surprised if the industrial estate became even less industrial,” he said. Eric said the recent addition of Heavy Metal Barbell, Ocean Grove’s first warehouse gym, would be good for trading. “It’s good for business when another health and

well-being store opens up. There is always potential to network and work together
to promote well being,” he said. Cheryl Markham from
Tradies Takeaway has watched this development over the past seven years. “New businesses in the area are bringing different people. Weekends we are definitely busier. We get a lot of mums and families here now,” she said. “It’s changed a lot in the seven years I’ve been here. It was like a dead hole.” Industrial estate developer Simon Sykes said it’s important to have a good commercial area. “This is the future for Ocean Grove.” Simon said there would be further development of the industrial/business area which will be more central as housing development pushes further north.
Warehouse gym moves into business park THERE is nothing wrong with being strong according to Heavy Metal Barbell, Ocean Grove’s newest warehouse gym. With a focus on the development of strength and conditioning primarily through barbell and free weight training they utilise elements of powerlifting, Olympic lifting and strongman lifts. Owners Rick Jackson and Tas Warn aim to keep the body strong, flexible and injury free by integrating core lifts such as the squat, dead lift, overhead press, bench press and row into a well rounded program.
Rick said they strive to provide all their clients whether they are beginners, advanced, male or female, young or old a solution to their goals. “Whether your goal is developing strength, general fitness and conditioning, weight-loss or generally improving your lifestyle and healthy habits, we have something for you,” he said. “We keep the body adapting by emphasising slow and sustainable progress while maintaining good technique; as a result we are very hands on and are always here to offer advice on training and nutrition.”
Born and raised in Ocean Grove Rick and Tas both have impressive backgrounds in nutrition and weight training. With a Bachelor of Health and Science Rick has been working as a paramedic in Melbourne for the past five years and both completed a Cert IV in fitness to round out their knowledge. Tas said they have had an overwhelmingly positive response so far from all who have visited, and hope to eventually work with local sporting clubs. “We had always wanted to create a decked out gym by lifters for lifters in

Above, Hooded Plovers grouping together last week on Collendina beach. Only 400 remain in Victoria. Inset, Birdlife Australia volunteers John Murray and Lachlan Manly with the ‘Hoodies’ weekly update signs displayed during breeding.
Flight is survival for chicks DON’T count your chicks before they fly. For the second year in succession Collendina’s pair of endangered beach-nesting Hooded Plovers-orange flagged CA and NZ – have lost their chick just days before it fledged (was able to fly). Our resident pair made four breeding attempts on Collendina Beach this season (Sept- March). Their first three nests failed
during egg incubation but from their final fourth nest three chicks hatched. Only one chick lived beyond the first week but sadly it too recently disappeared on day 33 of its 35 day flightless chick stage. Extensive dog/fox tracks were visible on the beach where the chick and its parents had made their feeding range. In total this season three Hoodie breeding pairs made nine nests
on the beach between Collendina and Point Lonsdale, laying 19 eggs from which six chicks hatched. Just two chicks survived to flight, one at Collendina and the other at Point Lonsdale. All other Bellarine Hooded Plover beach nests failed-at Barwon Heads, Black Rock, Bancoora, Breamlea and Point Impossible. With the weather cooling the breeding season has finished and
larger social groups of Hoodies can now be found congregating on local surf beaches and Lake Victoria. Sincere thanks to all the beach visitors and dog walkers who were willing to modify their routines and help give these iconic surf beach specialists a chance. Reserved Eastern Yellow THIS beautiful Eastern Yellow Robin was photographed in the Nature Reserve, close to the Information Centre. It was not very happy to have its photograph taken, so this is the closest I got! Previous to seeing the Robin, the only other Eastern Yellow Robins I have seen have been in the Otways. The Eastern Yellow Robin grows to 15-16cms in length, and is one of the largest Australian Robins. It is found in heaths, scrublands, woodlands and forests, but is most often found near water. It usually inhabits dark, shady locations and
moves quickly from tree to tree (which makes photography very difficult). Eastern Yellow Robins are not found anywhere to the west of a line from Port Douglas, to Melbourne, except for the south coast of Victoria, and the southeastern tip of South Australia. The Eastern Yellow Robin has a grey back and head, yellow underparts, with an olive-yellow rump. The bill is black. Both sexes are similar in plumage, colour and pattern, but the female is slightly smaller. The Eastern Yellow Robin feeds on
a wide variety of insects, including spiders. These are caught mostly on the ground. Birds normally feed alone, but may also be seen in pairs or small family groups. A reminder that the next monthly meeting of Bellarine Birdlife will be held on the May 7 at the Neighbourhood Centre at 7.30pm. If you are interested in finding out more, please ring or email the Secretary of Bellarine Birdlife, Miles Charlesworth 0438 531 782 or bellbirder@gmail.com. By Jennifer Carr
BLUE-green algae levels in Lake Connewarre and the lower Barwon River estuary are falling but testing continues and signs remain in place during the current warm weather. Department of Sustainability and Environment Incident Controller Brad Mahoney said the recent drop in blue-green algae levels was a positive sign but he wouldn’t declare the blue green algae incident over just yet. People are reminded of the following precautions, necessary for any waterbased activity in Lake Connewarre and the lower Barwon River estuary: • Adhere to blue-green algae information signs • Make sure you and those in your care, particularly children, avoid direct contact with affected water. • Keep pets out of affected water Health, safety and fishing advice is available from the DSE Customer Service Centre on 136 186.

THE recent spate of youths taking their lives due to cyber bullying has me deeply saddened. As you grow older you find freedom in the knowledge that your popularity in high school, your fashion sense, your hair colour, weight or body shape does not define who you are as a person. The be all and end all mentality entwined within high school needs to be eradicated. It is just a small part of life. And for some it will be the best years but for a few it may be the hardest. The wonderful thing about high school though is that it ends, and more often than not you rarely see those you went to school with. Those lucky enough to travel or explore often experience how many weird and wonderful people there are out there in the world. Discovering along the way how big the world actually is, how diverse peoples countries and cultures are. How differing one person’s ideals of beauty can be to another. If I could pass on anything to youths
experiencing online bullying or bullying in any medium it would be to turn your computer off, or to be brave enough to stay strong and believe in yourself. To remind you that this is just one part of what is a wonderful whilst often challenging adventure. To not be disheartened by online taunts or the misguided frustrations of others. Nothing is worth taking your life over, no problem is too big to overcome, especially when you are just at the beginning. And for those responsible for such taunts, one day when you grow older you may finally gain the wisdom and maturity to help prevent anyone from doing the same. • Anyone with suicidal thoughts can call Lifeline’s 24hr crisis telephone line on 13 11 14. Mobbs meets Alister Turrill Alister Turrill is a 19 year old musician from Queenscliff. He plays a killer slide, and is starting to make a name for himself locally and in the Melbs scene. Let’s learn a bit more about this talented muso. Tell us a bit about yourself Alister: I play original, solo blues, roots and folk music. I’ve been playing live for around 18 months now around Geelong, The Bellarine Peninsula, The Surf Coast and Melbourne. My main influences would have to be Ben Harper, Charlie Parr, Lloyd Spiegel, The Snowdroppers, The Brothers Grim & The Blue Murders, Chase The Sun, Son House, Seasick Steve, and of course, Neil Young & Mr James Marshall Hendrix. What instruments do you play? I sing, play guitar and lap steel, and use a stomp box and tambourine under my feet for percussion! I love your slide guitar playing, was it hard to learn? Cheers! It was at first of course, but because I’d loved the sound for so many years beforehand I had a lot of motivation to get comfortable on the instrument as quickly as possible. It’s almost two years since I first picked one up. I still have lots to learn of course, I’ll never stop that. Do you remember the first time you played in front of an audience… was it scary? Absolutely! After a few months of playing guitar I decided to play in my high school’s talent show. I played and sang a Ben Harper song. I don’t think I’d ever been so nervous! It was terrifying, but great
fun! I’ve been able to calm my nerves a fair bit after playing regular gigs, but I definitely still get nervous! You have been doing a few gigs in Melbs lately, must be exciting for you to play in the big smoke? It’s incredibly exciting! I’ve met a lot of great young musicians who’ve given me the chance to support them at various venues across Melbourne over the past year. As well as this, The Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society have really helped me out, getting me onboard a lot of their shows and introducing me to many of my heroes, several of whom have then given me the chance to support them. This includes Geoff Achison, Ash Grunwald, Fiona Boyes, and most recently, Lloyd Spiegel. My next Melbourne show is actually with Lloyd again on the 13th of April at Ruby’s Lounge, Belgrave. Who locally do you enjoy playing with? First and foremost I have to say Greig McInerney. Greig helped me get a feel for playing live when I’d only just started by asking me to play shows as a duo with him down at what was then the Nectar Bar. These were my first paid gigs. He made me feel very welcome and helped me to gain experience when I really needed it! I still play shows with him as regularly as I can and I love it. There’s so many others though who are such wonderful people and great musicians too, I also love playing with Jon Willard, Greg Southall, Scotty McCutcheon and the amazing Bree-Arne Chamley!
How long have you been playing guitar for? About six years on the guitar, and almost two on the Lap Steel. Do you have a fave local musician? All of the above! There’s no way I could choose between them! There’s a lot of diversity in our little scene and all the musicians are great in different ways! Can we expect to hear some recordings in the near future? I’ll be recording a demo very, very shortly. This will be something that I’ll be giving away at shows. Meanwhile, I’ll be getting an EP together. I’ll keep everyone up to date via w w w. fa c e b o o k . c o m / alisterturrill Who do you follow in the AFL? “The greatest team of all”!!! (what, Collingwood … ?) Fave band of all time? I don’t think I’ll ever be able to answer this question with one band, but I’ll narrow it down!! Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Lamb Of God, Dropkick Murphys, and The Derek Trucks Band. Fave food? Mexican/Californian and Italian. What do you like best about hanging out in the OG ? The friendly and peaceful vibe that the music and the people give the place! Because of this, whenever I walk into the Sandbar, especially on Muso’s Night, I automatically feel at home! Mobbsy can be heard weekdays on 93.9 BayFM 4-8pm. He can also be spotted falling off his boogie board at Mainies most days, except when the touros are in town.

Group buying for cheaper electricity and gas in Grove How can you save serious money on your power bills? – how about $300 or more per year? THE Ocean Grove Community Association and Barwon Heads Association supported by the Ocean Grove Voice and Ocean Grove Community Enterprise are pleased to advise that bulk purchase of electricity and gas via Power Group Purchasing (on behalf of the consumers - residential and business) in the Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove areas is underway. To date over 240 households have registered their interest. Through acting as a single buying group the project will allow consumers to secure a better deal from power providers. Energy retailers will be invited to bid for local business with their best package in terms or service and price. Previous similar bulk purchasing arrangements (Portarlington) have resulted in savings of up to $300 per annum or more. The Ocean Grove Community Enterprise and
the Ocean Grove Voice are getting right behind this project to save money for our community households. You can register your interest via the website www. powergrouppurchasing. com and then click on the green button, where you can then register under Barwon Heads or Ocean Grove. In June Power Group Purchasing will introduce the successful energy supplier to the community and provide an opportunity for further registration. We encourage you to now join all those who have already registered the aim is for 500 households. The more people that register the more the savings. Please note by registering now you do not have to actually commit until tenders close. In the future such community initiatives will lead to other potential bulk purchasing such as solar energy, phone carriers and fuel etc.

Pressure on Grove playing space LOCAL sporting clubs are continuing talks with council over the proposed Shell Road sporting developments as pressures continue to mount on playing space. Director of Ocean Grove Netball Jo Britt said rapid growth in the club has put strain on their clubs facilities. “The facilities aren’t very
good but we are currently in talks with the council about the upcoming Shell Road development,” she said. “We’ve been stuck with sub-standard facilities for years.” Jo said an increase in players since last season has highlighted the importance and need for the new development.
“Having grown an extra three teams from last year, we’re trying to do our best with the current Draper St courts,” she said. The Shell Road sports development has been under consideration for decades and still requires further funding. But work has already begun on realigning and planning the new facilities.
Eventually the Shell Road sports precinct will include four netball courts as well as modern club and change rooms. These rooms will function for football, cricket and soccer combined. The Surfside Waves Soccer Club is also in a similar position- there is a steady flow of interest in soccer yet at present their facilities do not reflect this.
The City of Greater Geelong recently granted the club money for training lights ahead of the pavilion work. “The new lights and pavilion will finally see the Waves having access to quality facilities and allow the club to continue to grow,” said Waves Vice President Ian Waugh. By Christian West
Proud day for swimmers
Ocean Grove’s new super quartet of swimmers.
OCEAN Grove Primary School has unearthed their new super quartet of swimming stars. Last month four 10 year-old boys freestyle relay team travelled to Melbourne on March 29 to compete in the state finals at the Melbourne Aquatic Centre. The four swimmers that competed were Tyler Walsh, Noah Lever, Cooper Collett and Flynn Kinsey. It was dedication for young Flynn who even interrupted his Queensland holiday to compete at the event. “The boys swam a super race to finish seventh in the state from the very difficult lane 8. Their parents , grandparents and school are extremely proud of their outstanding efforts.” Richard Hughes, PE and Sports Coordinator.

Waves slam outnumbered Warriors SURFSIDE Waves seniors began their 2012 campaign by flogging an understaffed North Geelong Warriors side 23-1 at Shell Road on Sunday. McClelland brothers Gabe (5) and Troy (3) made the most of the opportunity as Waves embarrassed the hapless visitors. By the last half an hour the Warriors keeper was pleading with the referee to call time. “How much more of this do we have to take,” he said. Mathew Boore and
Staffan Hargreaves also got hatricks in the game in which eight of the side made the score sheet. Warriors also conceeded two own goals. This weekend Waves play away to Bell Park. MEANWHILE Waves women also reached double figures, notching up 11 against Barwon. Maddison Bennett scored five, while Shamley Woodhouse and Lara Williams both got two, and Maddie Hill and Cassie Hyunes grabbed singles.

Bears face Ballarat in season opener THE Bellarine Bears Baseball Club commences their new season this Saturday facing off against last year’s finalists Ballarat City. The highly-fancied Ballarat City played off in the 2011 Geelong Baseball Association Grand Final losing to Guild in the season decider. Saturday’s A-Grade match on April 21 will be played at Ballarat’s new redeveloped baseball facility Prince of Wales Park. Bellarine Bears president David Crotty said the club was looking to start their campaign against last
season’s runners-up on a winning note. “We hope to be able to spoil their (Ballarat party), with a couple of new players in our firsts this year as well as the seasoned campaigners in Brad McKentish, Lyndon Hockey, Matt Osborne and Wayne Visser,” Crotty said. “The development of Tyson O’Keefe, who was a representative of the state under 16 side this year will see him play a significant part in the Bears having
success this season.” Crotty admitted he was pleased with the numbers at the Bears preseason training, with the club looking at possibly introducing a fourth senior team in 2012. “We have had good numbers at training especially for seniors, we will have enough numbers for three teams – maybe we will have another team if we get a few more players.” MEANWHILE the Bears are searching for more junior players for its Under 12 and 14 teams this season, which starts on Saturday April 28.
Tyson O’Keefe.
In other club news the Bears will introduce a new initiative called Rally Caps this season, a program aimed at 4-9 year olds, much like the AFL’s Auskick or the Kanga
cricket program. “What we do is little skills sessions and drills with the kids, which runs for a hour and a half,” Crotty said. If anyone is interested in playing baseball at the Bears at any age group this season, they can contact David Crotty on 0418520159 or email him at dcro3325@ bigpond.net.au For more information on the Bellarine Bears Baseball Club log on to the club’s website www.bellarine. baseball.com.au. Tough start for Grove Ocean Grove Netball Rounds 1 & 2: Seniors It has been a frustrating start to the season for the Ocean Grove senior grade netball teams with no wins across the grades after two rounds. In the A-grade, Drysdale were too accomplished for a young Ocean Grove side in round 1 and finished the game too strongly to record a convincing 62-31 win. The Ocean Grove team are still coming to grips with an infusion of young blood and a new game plan and will naturally take a while to gel. Some positives from the game were the form of young goalie Zanna Woods and the ever reliable Tina Birch. In round 2 against Modewarre, the girls
started strongly and showed a glimpse of what they are capable of in the first half. However, they struggled to keep up the intensity after the main break and were again outplayed in the run to the line. Modewarre ran out easy winners 76-37. Youngster Grace Caldow showed that she will be a player of the future with a solid performance while Krystal Boswell challenged for best on court honours. There are some good signs, but the coaching staff will be looking for a more consistent, four quarter effort this week against the might of the Geelong Amateur. The B-Grade girls were convincingly beaten by Drysdale in round 1 but bounced back in round

2 to be right in the game until the final whistle. Ocean Grove ultimately went down by 3 goals in a match that could have gone either way. Kelly McIntosh has been in good form in both games and Emma Doolan has made the most of her opportunities in the goal ring. Following the general theme of the day, the C and D grade teams both suffered heavy losses against Drysdale in round 1. Both teams put in better performances in round 2 but couldn’t quite get the job done. Emma Collins and Jess Grace were prominent in the C-Grade game against Modewarre. Bec Kenny and Cath Slevin have had good games in D-Grade. A Grade action.

Joint reserves captains Joe Hinkley and Tim Baker.
Grove takes points over Hawks NEW Grubber co-captain Pete Corredig capped off a memorable start to the 2012 season as he kicked the winning goal in the shadows of full-time against Drysdale. With only a few minutes remaining on the clock, the 24-year-old took a towering mark at half-forward and slotted through a vital goal from a set shot. Corredig, who joined the Grubbers last season after playing stints at Yarraville and Strathmore, admitted the practice of kicking goals after training may have helped him calm the nerves in the big moment.
“I guess it doesn’t (get any better than that), I wasn’t too sure of myself,” said Corredig after the match. “I have not kicked the winning goal during a game, but at training I have done it heaps of times, but it is just imaginary stuff. “I was on the wrong side, I am a rightfooter and it was not my preferred side to be kicking from, I guess I decided to go through my emotions and kick it through.” As one of the new co-captains, fittingly Corredig wore former Ocean Grove skipper James Dalton’s old No.6 jumper that he made famous at the club.

MEET Ocean Grove Football Club’s newest mascot for 2012, Joe McGregor, son of Grubber senior coach Cameron McGregor. The four-year-old made his debut as the club’s mascot at the annual ‘Red’ Trevean Challenge practice match played against Strathmore on March 24. “Handy pick up, long term prospect,” Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor said. “Good for membership as he is good looking like his dad.” The only problem for young Joe is he is seen (pictured here) wearing a Sydney Swans AFL guernsey, not the official Ocean Grove Football Club jumper. The club has put in an order for a junior Grubber guernsey to be sent to Joe next season.

Solid start for Grubbers THE GRUBBERS head into this weekend’s clash against 2011 BFL finalists Geelong Amateur full of confidence after an unbeaten start to the 2012 season. Ocean Grove recorded a 2-0 start to the new season following a comprehensive 36-point victory over Modewarre at Mount Moriac Recreation Reserve on Saturday. Final scores were Ocean Grove 16.14.110 to Modewarre 11.8.74. Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor admits he is wary of Geelong Amateur’s slow start to 2012 and said the match looms as a danger game for his players. Amateur, who remain
winless after two rounds with losses to Queenscliff and Torquay, faced a similar predicament last season after 1-2 start and a 31-point loss to Ocean Grove in the corresponding round three fixture in 2011. Geelong Amateur finished the home and away last season with 15 wins 2 losses and 1 draw. “We beat them last year at the same time in Round three and (Geelong Amateur) did not lose another game for the remainder of the home and away season,” McGregor said.
“If we play to our ability I think we can beat Amateur, it is certainty a danger game as every game is going to be.” MEANWHILE a bag of six goals from Ocean Grove forward Daniel Maloney was the big catalyst in the win over Modewarre. Key Grubber Shane Jack was amongst his side’s best after missing with a back injury in Ocean Grove’s one-point win over Drysdale in Round one. New recruit Tom Roberts was the major injury casualty from the Modewarre win after he sustained a corked thigh and remains unlikely to play this weekend. McGregor said it was
a tough and physical encounter for his players. “They (Modewarre) threw everything at us, it was a pretty tough physical game of footy,” he said. “But we stood up and gave us much as we got. “It was a really hard game I suppose it was one of the most physical games that I have seen us play.” The Grubbers led at all the quarter by quarter time breaks, the second term the most profitable for the visitors with six goals. MEANWHILE a firedup Ocean Grove upstaged 2011 premiers Modewarre to win by 39 points in the Reserves grade. The Grubbers won 11.12.78 to the Warriors 6.3.39
A six-goal opening quarter blitz help set up the win for Ocean Grove after home side Modewarre failed to kick a goal at the first break. In the Under 18’s Colts, Ocean Grove 5.4.34 lost their opening game of the season to St Mary’s 11.13.79 by 45 points at St Mary’s Oval. Nethaniel Giddings was the star for the young Grubbers as he booted three majors. MEANTIME Saturday’s match against Geelong Amateur starts with the Under 18’s Colts game at 10am at Ocean Grove. The reserves match follows at midday, while the senior match begins at 2:10pm.

GRUBBERS OCEAN Grove footballers have started the new season in good form, turning over Drysdale and Modewarre in their first two games. A bigger test may come over the next three weeks though. Fixtures against a winless Geelong Amateurs, Newcomb and then arch rivals Barwon Heads will test the new found confidence. Unfortunately though, the netballers have found the
early season tough going. Big losses on the first run out against Drysdale were shattering for the confident side. However, a new game plan and the infusion of new young players are likely to take time to settle and coaches are keen to highlight the positives that have already emerged.
