OCEAN GROVE’S NUMBER ONE NEWSPAPER

FREE FORTNIGHTLY

NEW DAWN OCEAN Grove senior football team played their last home match at their Draper Street ground of 53 years on Saturday. Next season they will join the netballers who have already relocated to the new sports precinct at Shell Road Reserve. It's a project that's taken 40 years to realise and many

thought would never come about. On Saturday some of the legends of the club's history took to the ground to mark the occasion after a convincing win in their last home game of the season against Modewarre. Story page 5. Match reports pages 38-39.

A good sized crowd turned out to watch Grove's final home game of the season and the last at the Memorial Ground (above) before they move to Shell Road Reserve (below).

Grubber legends Matt Payne, Damian 'Bones' Clark, Dennis White and Jimmy Saarinen participated in jumper presentation as the Grubbers theme song was played over the speaker system.

Four new Grove firefighters OCEAN GROVE CFA welcomed four new recruits this month, including two recognised for excellence in their initial training. Jonathan Horne won the Chief ’s Award for best practical fireman, out of class of 30, taking home some cash and a certificate. “The cash was to buy the frame for the certificate,” he joked. Daniel Campaniello won the CEO’s Award (class dux) and smashed the training centre’s beep test record, with a run of 16.8. Daniel was a fan of Ocean Grove long before he

recruit Andrew Beckett. The four were busy with orientation during the last couple of weeks, getting to know the area and its fire hazards. They originally hail from Melbourne and Ballarat, except Cameron Jones, who is from Geelong. “This seems like a nice place to work,” said Cameron. Officer in Charge Ian Beswicke said the new recruits were fitting in well. “It’s good for the other staff in the brigade to get back to basics,” he said. “Being a recruit there is a lot to learn. This is the start of a long career for them.”

40th with a difference

STACEY Dalton will celebrate her 40th with a difference this October: instead of presents, she’s asking for donations to Cottage by the Sea. “I grew up in Ocean Grove and was blessed to be part of a beautiful family – seeing kids suffer really tears me apart,” said Stacey. Cottage by the Sea is in its 125th year of helping disadvantaged children and receives no government funding. The mother-of-two said the cottage had long been in the back of her mind and donating towards it was an easy choice. “It gives disadvantaged children opportunities and a chance to feel loved,” she said. Geoff's magnificent flying machine FOR Ocean Grove resident Geoff Wills nothing compares to taking to the skies in one of his antique planes. “You are nearer to the experience of flying,” he said. “It’s just another world up there.” Over the years Geoff, 78, and his son Chris, 41, restored a 1937 Hornet Moth, which he said is one of only three operating in Australia. “It was in good condition when I bought it,” he said. “It was just

with the Tiger Moth, which has been in the family since 1965. Geoff has since given the Tiger Moth to Chris. The father and son will fly to Cowra, Nhill and Temora in the Hornet Moth in a couple weeks, cruising at 1000m. Temora, just north of Wagga Wagga, is home to a much-visited aviation museum. Geoff said flying an old plane is much more enjoyable than travelling in a commercial airliner.

BayKeepers to screen PORT Phillip EcoCentre and Coast Care will screen the international awardwinning documentary, BayKeepers, at Piping Hot Chicken Shop for free this month. The 26-minute film tracks 'Baykeeper' Neil Blake as he looks at plastic pollution in Port Phillip Bay. Neil will be at the screening and will talk about what’s being done locally to protect our marine life. The film screens at 7pm, August 29 and includes a performance by local musician BreeArne Manley, along with special guest Captain Trash.

Public urged to phone in CRIME STOPPERS is playing a vital role in large police operations on the Bellarine, according to local policeman Sergeant Michael Knight Sgt Knight said Crime Stoppers had supported Bellarine police in Operation Sweeper and Operation Sweeper 2 earlier this year. After the second operation, police had executed 10 search warrants, seized $35,000 in drugs and contraband, and processed 14 offenders, for 27 drug and two weapons offences. “A strong percentage of those were from Crime Stoppers,” said Sgt Knight. This month Crime Stoppers announced its highest arrest rates in its 28-year history. Despite this Sgt Knight said it was underused for some crimes on the Bellarine and urged Ocean Grove residents to give information anonymously. “Crime Stoppers probably isn’t being used enough on the Bellarine,” he said. To report a crime or give information anonymously call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Shark spooks 13th surfers JUST weeks after Mick Fanning’s famous encounter at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa, a bunch of local surfers had their own scare at 13th Beach. A crowd of locals surfing the ‘Golfies’ area a week ago last Saturday were spooked by a 2-3m Bronze whaler, possibly two of them, that cruised right through the line up. Not a regular sight, it was

enough to spook the surfers out of the water. Fortunately, just like the world champ’s experience no one was hurt and the whaler or whalers turned their nose up at neo-clad

flotsom and went about their business. Mac Taylor was surfing alone away from the group and saw the fin earlier. It wasn’t until he came in that watchers on the headland confirmed his sighting. “All I saw was a fin where I was. I was surfing Corners. It was out in the distance and it just looked like a dolphin but it was just cruising not bobbing about.

I thought, ‘I hope that’s not a shark’ and kept surfing for a bit. “When got out I saw a couple mates on the lookout and they said ‘did you see anything?’. They said two bronze whalers chased a couple of guys out. “If I had known I would have got out.” Sometimes one shark can look like two as the tail fin looks like another dorsal fin.

Sweet for Caroline

ART JUMP: artist Clare O'Donoghue, prize winner Caroline Hughes and optometrist Greg Sly. CAROLINE Hughes got a pleasant surprise this month after buying a pair of specs at Greg Sly Optometry. Caroline took home a canvas print by Ocean Grove artist Clare O’Donoghue, after

winning the store’s latest prize draw. “It’s lovely and colourful!” she said. “I actually know the artist.” The Ocean Grove resident had no idea the competition was running and was excited when

Greg Sly rang her. “I rode past the store on my bike about a month ago and thought ‘that’s a beautiful print’,” she said. “Beyond that I had no idea what he had going.” Greg said the competition was a unique

way to promote his practice. Anyone who purchased a pair of glasses during July went into the draw to win the print. “It was just a fun thing to brighten winter and support local artists,” he said.

Grove garden market thriving OCEAN Grove’s budding underground garden market is thriving thanks to Backyard Bounty Bellarine. Lana Purcell planted the Facebook page last December and it’s grown to 523 members. “Last summer I had way too many zucchinis – I had about four or five each day,” she said. “I tried to give them away but there were too many.”

MARKET JOY: Nicole Beardsley, Sally Waites, Lana Purcell and Corrie Hale.

Lana started the page with her friends for local gardeners with an excess of produce. Backyard Bounty Bellarine is one of three similar pages around Geelong, but Lana said it’s the most active of the three. Its members can swap or sell anything from eggs and kale, to homemade jams and cakes. For more information search Backyard Bounty Bellarine on Facebook.

Search for missing stick

LOCAL resident Neisha Lee Mudd is desperately seeking an ornamental walking stick mistakenly taken to the Salvation Army last November. “My dad made this for me more than 20 years ago and we are both terribly upset,” she said. “I will pay to get it back.” The horse-shaped walking stick was in a load of items taken to the op shop when Neisha moved back to Ocean Grove, from Woodend. Neisha said the stick is very sentimental to her and her “dad’s eyes got a bit watery” when she told him it was lost. “My dad carves things out of wood,” she said. “He made it specifically for me because I used to love horse riding as a child.” The walking stick has a horse-shaped head with one ear missing and has the word 'Mudd' engraved on it. Neisha asked anyone with information to call her on 0425-776 130.

Pink socks for a worthy cause PINK: Kevin Bowers, Michelle Lowry, Tracy Griffiths and Julie Rodger don some pink socks in preparation for Surfside Waves big day.

LUKE VOOGT SURFSIDE Waves Soccer Club will don pink socks this month to raise money for the Ocean Grove Barwon Heads Breast Cancer Support Group. Club president Kevin Bowers recently bought 270 socks for the ‘Pink Socks Round’, which will run from August 28 to 30.

“We want to support the group, which supports women in the area,” Kev told the Voice last Wednesday. “I met Kev a few months ago and he just decided he’d like to help us ladies,” said support group president Julie Rodger. “I’m so thrilled he’s having this event to raise money for us – I only

found out about it a week ago.” More importantly, said Julie, the round will be a great way of creating awareness for the group. “Some people don’t know about the support available,” she said. “The idea is to get the word out that there is support for women on the Bellarine who are undergoing treatment.”

The group provides help for women living with breast cancer, ranging from helping with meals and giving flowers to lawn-mowing and toys for their children. “Once you’ve had chemo you can’t stand up,” said fellow group member and breast cancer survivor Tracy Griffiths. Kev’s wife suffered breast cancer and he said

this made the cause more personal. “When I was in Melbourne we didn’t have a local support group for my wife, or I wasn’t aware of one,” he said. “You can get some support and make it a bit easier.” For more information on the group contact Julie Rodger at julesrodg@ gmail.com.

Draper St farewell MARK HEENAN PASSIONATE Ocean Grove folk turned out in force to celebrate the Grubbers last ever home fixture at Memorial Reserve on Saturday. For the last 53 years, the venue bounded by Draper Street and The Avenue has been the Grubbers spiritual football home. Ocean Grove Football Netball Club president, Ian Walker, praised Grove locals who flocked in droves to Memorial Reserve for the final time at a senior BFL home game. “It was absolutely fantastic,” said Walker, in his first year as Grubber president. “I think half of Ocean Grove turned out….we even had people from Drysdale and Barwon Heads Football Clubs here, it was just terrific.” The occasion was filled with entertainment, fun and frivolity. “There was a possibility we may have run out of alcohol (on the day) and I think all the food had gone,” Walker laughed. The day started at 10am with AFL Barwon

Aussie rules legends Phil Carman and Terry Daniher were guest speakers at the final Memorial Reserve football club lunch. Picture: LINDSAY KELLEY

Grubbers legend Jimmy Saarinen carried the club's first jumper onto the ground.

Division 1 Colts game between Ocean Grove and Grovedale, where the gallant bottom-placed Grubbers lost by 17 points. At midday, the BFL reserves clash between Ocean Grove and Modewarre got underway, while at the same time VFL/AFL legends Terry Daniher and Phil Carman entertained Grubber masses at a special luncheon from noon. The main game kicked off after 2pm, and by day’s end the Grubbers saluted

Grubbers volunteers to commemorate day. Walker said the occasion would not have happened without the help of volunteers and the entire Ocean Grove Football Netball Club Committee. “Once again the volunteers around the club have been absolutely fantastic,” Walker said. Walker said the crowd rivalled the club’s bumper Easter home clash against Geelong Amateur earlier this year and a battle of the bridge home game against Barwon Heads.

their home fans with an 84-point demolition win over Modewarre. After the senior match concluded, a closing ceremony took place on the ground where four Grubber legends unveiled the club’s four guernseys and Ocean Grove’s BFL first senior flag in 1994 was raised at half mast. Grubber legends Jimmy Saarinen, Dennis White, Damian ‘Bones’ Clark and Matt Payne participated in a jumper presentation beating to the Grubbers theme song

over speaker system. A huge media blitz also occurred on the day. Community TV station Channel 31 broadcast the game, Channel 7 Melbourne filmed a segment for its nightly news, while the front cover of the league’s AFL Barwon Record was filled with a Grubbers flavour. “The media really helped us promote the day,” Walker said. CREATIVE: Cartoonist Jeff 'Joffa' Taylor with prep student Emma and his caricature of her.

Joffa brings drawings to life GEELONG cartoonist Jeff 'Joffa' Taylor visited Ocean Grove Primary School this month to help students bring their drawings to life. Joffa said cartoon drawing was a “hook” to get the students actively listening and being creative. “It’s about them using

their hands to create,” he said. “You could do the same thing with needlework, but you probably wouldn’t get the same results.” Joffa was once a newspaper cartoonist, but now travels the country, from Perth to Rockhampton, teaching

students to have fun with cartoons. He said he teaches them the basics and then lets them experiment. “There’s no wrong way,” he said. “Once they start making their own decisions they start trusting themselves.” Joffa said he loves the

expression involved in cartoon drawing. “People know what you mean but they can’t sue you,” he joked. “You’re able to have a say without using words – you leave it to peoples’ interpretation.” Prep student Emma got up at the end of her class to thank Joffa for

the lesson. “It’s the f irst time a little preppy has gotten up and said thank you,” he said. Joffa rewarded Emma for her daring with her very own signed caricature. “It was very good,” said Emma. “I liked the pictures.”

CCTV funding application welcomed by traders Westgate OCEAN Grove Business Association (OGBA) welcomed a Council application this week for $45,000 in State Government funding for CCTV in the Terrace.

“That’s brilliant,” said OGBA treasurer Lin Bell. “It’s great that something is happening – eventually.” If successful, the grant will go towards a $50,000 project to install cameras,

with Council asking the OGBA to contribute the remaining $5,000. “We’re fully supportive of anything that can happen with CCTV,” said Mr Bell.

“It’s one of the things that can make the community safer.” Concerns remain about who will actually monitor the CCTV footage.he said.

Dove's dough delight

Students from Ocean Grove, Surfside, Bellarine and Wallington visited the Dove Op Shop to receive helping funds and say thanks for the valuable funds. OCEAN Grove’s Dove Op Shop has handed over $34,000 in its latest round of community donations. Last week students from four local schools called in to the Uniting Church Outreach Centre Op Shop ‘The Dove’

where volunteers made a presentation totalling $5,000. Ocean Grove, Surfside and Wallington primary schools as well as Bellarine Secondary College all benefit from the grants. Other recipients

included Uniting Care Geelong ($14,000), Ocean Grove Barwon Heads Breast Cancer Support Group, Cherish Pets Foundation, Geelong Coast Days for Girls, the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, Carols in the

Park and the Black Dog Ride Foundation. A total of 24 organisations received grants in July. The Dove is now preparing for its spring stale on September 5 from 10am to 1pm. The organisers promise nothing over $3.

in region WESTGATE Concert Band is coming to Queenscliff this month for “some toe-tapping, soul-stirring music.” “It’s a great way to stay warm on a chilly Queenscliff winter’s afternoon,” said Joan Humphry, an Ocean Grove resident, whose husband Derek cofounded the band. OAM recipient Derek formed the band in 1979 in Melbourne’s western suburbs with Roy Hamilton. Despite retiring he stays involved, having recently arranged music for this year’s Ocean Grove Anzac services. The band, which includes brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments, returns to Queenscliff “for an afternoon of musical delight”. It’s been successful in band contests and festivals around Australia and overseas. The show commences at 2pm at Queenscliff Town Hall, August 23. Tickets are $10/5 adult/ child purchased at the door. Proceeds go towards the Bellarine Masonic Building Fund and to support the Queenscliff/ Point Lonsdale Junior Citizenship Award.

Renewable energy on the agenda? Dear Editor, I was pleased to hear Sarah Henderson's comments on radio last week giving some lukewarm support for renewable energy. But after almost two years in office, why has it taken Ms Henderson so long to realise that wind power has a lot of benefits for her electorate?

For some bizarre reason, the Liberal and National Parties have a hatred of renewable energy, despite clear and documented benefits. Wind power is clean. It doesn't produce tonnes of greenhouse gasses like coal fired power. Wind farms invest in country areas – they pay farmers annual rents, they employ local people

and they pay substantial council rates. Ms Henderson should have championed the wind industry when she was elected. Instead, she joined her colleagues and went to war against wind farms. It’s on the public record that Ms Henderson spoke in favour of a bill which tried to abolish the Clean Energy

Finance Corporation. She also used her vote in parliament to support the abolition of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency. So why the change of heart? The development of wind farms in Corangamite is essential to attract new jobs and lease payments to landholders.

What other industry is likely to come into our region and invest hundreds of millions of dollars? Ms Henderson’s mild support of wind farms this week sounded positive, but her past actions would suggest otherwise. Coll Spark, Ocean Grove

Netball fun for Ocean Grovers THE Netball World Cup was held in Sydney recently and several Ocean Grovers made the trip to watch their heroines in action. THE Sampson family (pictured left) of six travelled up to Sydney where mother Catherine and father Travis were joined by their daughters Tara, 11, Lucy, 9, Bree, 7 and youngest Alice, 5. The girls had their photo taken with ‘Nettie’, the mascot. Tara plays with Ocean Grove's under 11s. Rylee Finlay (pictured right) also made the trip and took the Voice along as well. $275,000 to assist it in promoting the region. The official recognition of Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine was strongly supported by councils across the region including the Borough of Queenscliffe and City of Greater Geelong. Previously Geelong and the Bellarine were part of the broader Otway and Ocean Road Board and concerns were raised locally that promotion of the Bellarine was being over shadowed by wider regional attractions. The Andrews state government is committed to the growth of tourism across the state and as local member I will be

working to ensure that the Bellarine is part of that growth. I welcome the announcement of the new Tourism Geelong and the Bellarine Board and look forward to working with them. BREE'S BIG WALK FOR MS

WALK FOR MS: Bree-Arne Manley will attempt to conquer the Banksia Trail at Ocean Grove Nature Reserve for multiple sclerosis.

LUKE VOOGT BREE-ARNE Manley will walk the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve’s Banksia Trail next month to raise awareness for multiple sclerosis and funds for the reserve. “This is my 10-year anniversary since I was first diagnosed with MS,” said Bree. “This is a really important piece of

environment and even if you’ve a disability like me you can still get out and enjoy it.” Bree is packing as many trips, walks and projects into the anniversary year as she can. “It’s kind of like giving the middle-finger to MS,” she said “This walk is one way that I can give back to a special place that has really helped with my physical and emotional

wellbeing.” In 2009 Bree lost a lot of function in her legs and she said the idea of doing Banksia Trail was “a bit scary. I struggle over 1km,” she said. Having raised thousands of dollars for various charity organisations, Bree is now setting her sights to her community. She will donate the money raised to the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve information

centre, to help make it more accessible. “This is an incredible feat for Bree to undertake – it would be like doing a marathon for someone else,” said Brooke Connor from Parks Victoria. “Her courage and commitment are an inspiration and I hope everyone supports her in this great project.” ‘Bree’s Big Walk’ starts at 10am on September 12. The day will includes

a range of naturebased kids’ activities, face painting, bird and wildflower walks, live music and a barbecue by the Ocean Grove Scouts. There will also be an Ocean Grove Nature Reserve photo competition, judged by Bree’s husband Lachlan, a prolific local photographer. For more information contact Brooke Connor on 0422-705 768.

New clinic healthy for mind and body OCEAN Grove’s new Allied Health and Complementary Health Clinic, Australian Mind Body Balance, opened earlier this month. The clinic offers a variety of services including clinical reformer pilates, massage, osteopathy, acupuncture, iridology, dietary advice and Chinese Medicine. Sisters Natasha and Amelia Hagger say they offer a holistic and natural approach to health care with a preventative focus. They are passionate about helping people

develop their own passion for healthy living through fitness, wellbeing, and proactive health care. Local resident Nicci Olsen was impressed by the very warm welcome she received there. “It’s very inviting, I popped in to see what is on offer and it’s stunning,” she said. “The rooms are absolutely beautiful, earthy and warm - it makes me want to stay here.” “It would be fantastic to try the pilates machines”.

Labor candidate keen to tackle some big issues Last Friday Voice journalist Luke Voogt sat down for coffee with Libby Coker, to get to know the Labor candidate for Corangamite. LIBBY Coker is married with two children and has lived in Aireys Inlet for 28 years. She was a teacher at Western Heights and a journalist, before becoming the Councillor for Anglesea and serving twice as Surf Coast Mayor. Ms Coker, 53, decided she wanted to get into local politics when she had her first child at 39. “I wanted to feel as if I had made a difference,” she said. “Governing is an amazing and humbling thing.” The Labor candidate said one the greatest challenges facing coastal towns is population growth and spoke about her passion for education. Ms Coker said the state government was looking at a new school in Ocean Grove and agreed it would be needed. “We have quite a young family demographic here in Ocean Grove,” she said.

Labor candidate for Corangamite Libby Coker. “ O v e r - c r o w d e d state governments with classrooms are never a new schools. good thing.” “I will be talking to (State Ms Coker said federal Education Minister) government could play James Merlino and Jan a key role in supporting Farrell about that,” she

said. Ms Coker also a c k n o w l e d g e d community sentiment about the residential development happening

in Ocean Grove. “I am very passionate about creating a balance between protecting the environment and appropriate development,” she said. “I don’t want towns to be spoilt by development.” The Labor candidate has been a member of local tourism boards and said there was huge potential for adventure and eco tourism in the Bellarine. “The challenge is how to encourage people to stay during winter,” she said. Ms Coker spoke passionately about climate change and its possible adverse affects on the coast, such as erosion and storm-surge. “I believe Corangamite has a key role to play to increase our renewable energy to 50 percent by 2030,” she said. “I’d be interested to hear if people on the Bellarine would like to have a summit on renewable energy.”

Relaxing chants and harmonies DANCING Shiva Kirtan performing at Geelong City Yoga. A NEW song can be heard around town these days. Blending ancient Sanskrit chants with western harmonies, the mainly Ocean Grove Dancing Shiva Kirtan group is reaching more and more people after playing fundraising benefits for Nepal and

relaxing, mediative afternoon sessions at Geelong City Yoga. Based on traditional Sanskrit text, kirtan chanting is done in a call and response style which brings the audience and the musicians together in the experience. Kirtan translated means “to sing” so participants can join in

or just they can relax and enjoy where the music takes them.” Everyone gets something different from kirtan. I call it meditation with a soundtrack” said Wayne Heard, the group’s harmonium player. Dancing Shiva Kirtan comprises of local muso’s Kristy

Freeman, drummer Scott McCutcheon along with singers Tara Lynch and Madhupuri. “Tim and Anna from Geelong City Yoga have been very supportive allowing us to use their lovely yoga space for kirtan events. The energy from the two forms of yoga complements each

other so well” said Kristy. You can find out more from the Dancing Shiva Facebook page or enquire through Geelong City Yoga. Geelong City Yoga, established in 2004 is Geelong's longest running yoga school and is one of only two certified Iyengar schools in the region.

Sampling our local fare

Luke Voogt continues his journey in sampling the region's local fare. LAST week my quest for Bellarine produce brought me to Farmers Harvest in Marcus Hill. Manager Paul Mifsud pulled some watercress off the shelf, which is grown just down the road at his son Michael’s hydroponic farm in Wallington. He added some kabana made at Queenscliff Meats, from meat grown in Ballarat and Bannockburn. The kabana was deliciously smokey, with a hint of spice, and water cress was light and fresh. Add some crackers and it makes a tasty snack – it’s a shame I didn’t have some cheese to top it off. Farmer’s Harvest stocks Drysdale Cheese but unfortunately the goats are not producing until next month. Before I left Paul passed me a generous handful of tamarillos, which I don’t think I’ve tried before. The store stocks a range of food from around Geelong and the Bellarine.

Former Hawk opens clinic Dr Kane Fraser with a client at his Ocean Grove clinic. FORMER Hawthorn footballer Kane Fraser has opened a chiropractic clinic in Ocean Grove. Bellarine Chiropractic is one of the town’s newest businesses and runs from a health centre at 14 Tuckfield Street. The business is owned by Dr Kane Fraser, who is the principle chiropractor. Kane has been practising for over 12 years and in that time has developed his skills to care for his patients. He utilises techniques such as Chiropractic adjustments, massage, dry needling, exercise rehabilitation and cupping. Kane is currently studying podiatry, as he also utilises orthotics as a form of treatment. Prior to starting in Ocean Grove,

Kane had a large multidisciplinary clinic in the Western District of Victoria which incorporated Chiropractic, Physiotherapy, Chinese Medicine and Massage Therapy. He has been visiting Ocean Grove and the Bellarine since has was 18 years of age. He used to get up at 5am and drive to the coast from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne on weekends to enjoy the amazing surf and relaxed lifestyle down here. Kane decided to sell his last clinic and move to the Bellarine when his parents and sister also became full time residents. He chose Ocean Grove to start his business to be close to his family, to enjoy the wonderful lifestyle and

to accommodate the ever increasing population in the area. Kane is already an active member of the community. He currently gives up his time to the support of the local football teams and is a sponsor of both soccer teams in the region. Away from work Kane enjoys watching football. Kane used to play for the Hawks and had a couple of reserve games with the Sydney Swans. He also loves surfing with his father and brother in law, cycling with some of the local legends in the area and eating at the fantastic eateries in the district. The local guide for dining on the Bellarine...

An offer you simply cannot refuse...

All day, every day THE Shack Dining Co in Barwon Heads wants to make you an offer you cant refuse! How does $20 for a burger and beer (or wine) sound? That’s right, $20 for any burger paired with a Carlton Draught, Peroni, or selected wine. It's available any day of the week including weekends and even for dinner on Friday or Saturday. You can now enjoy the casual dining experience at the Shack Dining Co for dinner. The same great menu items are paired by a changing dinnerspecials list including eye fillet and scotch fillet steaks, daily fish specials amongst others.

The wine list has also grown to allow the perfect match with your dish. Dinner is available Friday and Saturday nights. Casual coastal dining starts with breakfast. House-baked bread is a feature and topped with avocado, Meredith goat's feta and a poached egg, it makes a great breakfast. Istra ham and Hollandaise makes the perfect Benedict or take on the 'Shack' brekkie with the lot. The Shack Dining Co’s own coffee blend is expertly prepared and beans are also available to purchase so you can enjoy at home. Lunch will present a challenging

choice. Whether it's something lighter such as tuna croquettes or Chinese-spiced calamari or take on 'the Ruben' for a challenge. Shack Dining Co. offers a concise list of quality wines and a changing beer list. If it’s a good value, high quality dining experience you’re after, head to the Shack. Shorebird sighting surprise I'VE BEEN moving house, so bird-watching activities for me have been severely curtailed, unfortunately. I did drive along the Ocean Grove side of the Barwon River Estuary and to my surprise I saw a common greenshank in the shallows. Common greenshanks are migratory shorebirds. They breed in the northern hemisphere in our winter and migrate south, arriving in the southern hemisphere from August to November. Birds move north again in March and April. I wasn't expecting to see a shorebird in the estuary when it is still winter in the southern hemisphere, and it was a pleasant surprise. I had a drive through Curlewis and spotted a regent parrot mixing with a flock of eastern rosellas. The regent parrot is found in the Mallee region of Victoria, so the bird I saw was probably an escapee from an aviary. The parrot seemed to be flying very strongly and feeding with the rosellas, so hopefully it will be able to survive successfully out of captivity. Also in Curlewis I had a close encounter with a black-shouldered kite that posed very nicely in a dead

ABOVE: Black-shouldered kite. RIGHT: Two Common Greenshank on the Barwon Estuary. tree. Black-shouldered kites have such piercing red eyes, they look like they have been out on a big night on the town. The other highlight of my fortnight was witnessing a large flock of yellow-tailed black cockatoos attacking pine cones and playing in large puddles opposite the new petrol station on the roundabout at Drysdale. While watching the cockatoos I wondered why it was necessary to build another petrol station in Drysdale, especially on such a busy roundabout.

Unfortunately the light was dull so my photos of the black cockatoos were pretty ordinary, but it was lovely just to sit and watch them, and take time out from packing boxes. I received an email from Carole from St Leonards, who was lucky to have a pair of tawny frogmouths visit her garden for a

couple of hours one day. She said that the local bird population were not happy and they made quite a commotion with their protests. I hope that Carole has another visit from these beautiful birds again in the near future. I also received an email from local bird expert Tom Fletcher, who

guessed that the birds with red heads that were seen in Susanne's garden in Wallington (as discussed in the last edition of the Voice) were most likely redbrowed finches. I will have to contact Susanne to find out if she has managed to identify these birds. I also received some fabulous photos from Kevin and Anne Maree of a magpie-lark having an aerial battle over Breamlea. It's common to see smaller birds take on raptors and birds of prey, especially going in to spring when birds are defending nests. I also heard from David and Christine, who live in old Ocean Grove, that the wood ducks who nest in their tree have walked their ducklings to Blue Waters Lake, which is a distance of more than 1km. On September 12 there will be a huge day in the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve withe 'Bree's Big Walk' (see page 9 of this edition) which will involve a 3km walk, photography competition, plant sales, and music. Money raised will be donated to the Nature Reserve. For further details see the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve Facebook page. Jen Carr jencarr@y7mail.com

Inspiring trip for young players WHAT better way to celebrate the success of the Ocean Grove Tennis Club Junior division, than to have an excursion to the Melbourne Tennis Centre. Last Sunday the Junior committee bussed over forty juniors to Melbourne to enjoy a full day at the Tennis Centre including a tour of Rod Laver Arena, a coaching session with Tennis Victoria Coaches and a hit on the famous Institute of Sport tennis courts. The morning commenced with one half of the children engaging in a full tour of the park, including inside the arena, the press conference room and the hall of fame. The player locker room also proved popular with opportunities taken to have a photo in front of their favourite player’s locker. At the same time the other group were having a coaching session on the outside courts. They experienced some new drills and were put through their paces from tennis Victoria coaches. The groups then swapped over. After the morning session, the entire group surged onto the tennis courts for a hit of tennis with their friends, while the committee prepared

Ocean Grove Tennis Club Junior division enjoyed an excursion to the Melbourne Tennis Centre. a delicious BBQ lunch. After some photos, and some tennis games run by the club coach David, it was time to hit the road back to Ocean Grove. It was a highly successful day, giving the juniors a wonderful experience and sense of excitement leading into their finals. However it is also a sad time at the Ocean Grove Tennis Club as they say goodbye to a wonderful tennis family, who will be heading back to New Zealand to live.

The Pukepuke family have been very welcome members of the club, Stephanie being a Junior Committee member, helping on Friday nights / Saturday mornings always full of energy and willing to lend a hand in any way. She also played, up until last Saturday’s semi final, in the Section 6 seniors team. Her son Thomas played in Juniors and epitomised great sportsmanship and team values, last year winning the encouragement

award for commitment, enthusiasm and improvement. Husband Bruce and daughter Katie will also be missed as, regular visitors to the club, and great mates to many members. A generous, loving family that have left their mark on the OGTC. Semi Finals Saturday August 29 grand finals and last day for Summer sign up The club had ten junior winter teams this season, with six of them making finals. A great effort, particularly to those beginner teams that have had a difficult season. With two weeks to go, Preliminary and Grand Finals, there are still five teams vying for a win. Here is a wrap up of the first week of finals: Section 4 Boys

previously undefeated, lost to Geelong Lawn 3-23 to 3-28. The boys were sitting top of the ladder so get another chance next week in Preliminary Finals. Section 7 Mixed lost their match against Drysdale and will have umpiring duties next week. A great season by this team. Section 9 Boys White had a convincing win against Wandana Heights, 5-34 to 1-22 This will take them straight through to Grand Finals. Section 9 Boys Red defeated Geelong Lawn 4-29 to 2-25, taking them through to Preliminary Finals against Wandana Heights. Section 12 Boys defeated Leopold Green in a nail biting match winning by only 4 games 3-27 to 3-23. Sam Hines is still undefeated this season

My choice to become a Wave was a 'no brainer' Adrian Bond, Surfside Waves' inspirational Division 1 Men's captain talks about why he came to the Waves, fatherhood and being named captain

Q&A with Luis McClelland Surfside Waves star Luis McClelland spoke with the Voice:

Team supported in English Premier League Liverpool Position centre half Favourite drink coffee Favourite food steak Favourite players Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Stuard Mandley Most memorable soccer moment Being able to play with my two brothers and having the opportunity to coach seniors. Have you been to any big games? Yes, I went to Anfield to see the Merseyside (Liverpool vs Everton) derby.

MY last season at Surf Coast playing on Saturdays and making the travel up to Melbourne every week started becoming a bit tedious and I wasn’t enjoying my football as much as I wanted to. Towards the end of the season my wife Lauren and I found out we were expecting and it was then that I decided I wanted to play Sunday football in 2015. The group of guys playing at Surfside was the deciding factor in my club choice. Some good mates I have made over the years seemed to be gathering in the Surfside team so it was a no brainer when I could have just as easily stayed with Surf Coast with their Sunday team. This season I have enjoyed the group's cohesion in training, playing and in social contexts… Surfside as a club also has a very community

feel and I have found myself easily willing to help in the little things as far as coaching, linesman and organising club functions. The Surfside Division 1 team plays a very skillful passing game and has a great range of experience and style of players. It works for us and we have demonstrated it by beating the top sides in the league. I look forward to every weekend with the boys and will slot in any position for the team and make it work, another reason I love playing with the lads at Surfside. When Luis asked me to be captain I was very surprised and hesitant because it was very early in the season and I don’t think we had even played a game together as a team. With only a few training sessions under my belt with the Waves I still felt like the new guy

at the club, which I was, and the coach was asking me to be captain. I told Luis I would think about it but then driving home allowed me to clear my head and got me all excited so I jumped at the chance, exchanging text after text with Luis about the role I would play this season. Fatherhood has been exciting and having a baby really has changed my life. Everything revolves around Arcadia but there is little that can keep me away from football so he is usually sidelined with my supportive wife, Lauren. I can't wait for him to start interacting with his first football. This season I want to see the side keep fighting for that top spot on the ladder and go as far as we can in finals. Hopefully we can keep this group together and add some more quality into the side next season as well.

Bogey team conquered

Madi Wilding made some terrific saves for the Waves. Pictures: PATRICK CALLOW

Surfside Waves 5 def Breakwater Eagles 1 Surfside Waves Men's Division One side took on their 'bogey' team Breakwater Eagles at home and looked to build on their impressive win against Rangers the previous week. Surfside was slow to start and gave Breakwater the f irst chance which was superbly saved by Roscoe Holmes. This prompted Surfside into action, and they soon found themselves awarded a penalty after some great work from Aaron Bond. The penalty was converted by captain Adrian Bond, and from there on Surfside began to take control of the game. Jack Pedler doubled the lead with a moment of individual brilliance, with Surfside f inishing 5-1 victors. Pedler f inished with a hat-trick, and Gabe McClelland added the 5th. Stuart Mandley, Pedler, Luis McClelland and John Mills were best.

Round 15 women's Geelong Red 0 drew with Surfside Waves 0 In perfect playing conditions on an immaculate Geelong pitch the Waves women started brightly. Early chances fell to Indiah Van Galen, Nicole Mills and Cath Sattler but none were converted. The second half continued with stellar performances from the back four of Jasmin Pickett, Lily Wardley, Bridget Wallace and Renae Billington. A welcome return from Jessica Fletcher who was instrumental in attack and defence. The second half again saw the Waves with much of the possession but were unable to put their chances away. Mills was outstanding with hard running and is a great example of working hard in all areas of the pitch, as was Billington's work rate at the back. An awesome game in goals by Madi Wilding made sure the Waves got a well-deserved point with some excellent saves.

Miniroos loving the world game

YOUNG Grove kids have been getting their first touch of soccer and by the look on their faces, there’s something in the world game. The AIA Vitally Miniroos kick off trial programme that Surfside Waves took on some 12 weeks ago culminated in a celebration and presentation morning on Saturday. The weather was kind as it had been for the entire program. So every Saturday morning 42 kids aged from three to nine have taken part in some fun skills sessions to get fit, stay active and learn about soccer. An enthusiastic group of coaches led by program manager Cath Sattler whose initial idea it was to try the program out at Surfside. The coaches were Sophorn Thea, a local university student from Queenscliff and ex-team

mate of Cath’s at Barwon Heads, current senior women’s player Talisha Sparks and vice-president and coaching co-ordinator Andy Sattler. Miniroos is about having fun with the ball and the kids hardly realise they are learning skills. FFV co-ordinator Jorg Gero visited the session last week and gave the club a massive tick of approval for the content, the enthusiasm and the organisation of the program. On hand was club president Kevin Bowers to present all participants with a medal and a pack of soccer cards. The players were then treated to hot dogs, a drink and some cookies. Surfside Waves hopes to run this program again next season as its popularity has been great and the feedback from the parents just fantastic.

Placement volunteer Sophorn Thea presents Cath Sattler with flowers in thanks for accommodating her as coach. They are with Waves president Kevin Bowers.

Praise heaped on young Cobras Final weekend of Cobras junior footy Round 16 - weekend of August 7 U/10’s OGCC Red (16) Modewarre (43) What a great season our Under 10 Red Cobras team has had. Cobras unfortunately went down in our last game, against Modewarre but all the boys kept listening and endeavouring to put in play ‘Joffas’ directions. With a great number of supporters watching, the boys kept trying hard all game. OGCC Orange (47) South Barwon 4 (20) This week we took on South Barwon 4 and the coach could have given the whole team an award as it was a fantastic way to finish of the year with a great team effort. The boys have been fantastic to coach and have shown great improvement, Thanks for a lot of fun coaching. OGCC White (28) Drysdale Boothroyd

(34) Fantastic end to season 2015, spectacular skill ridden game put on display from both sides which unfortunately ended with Drysdale one straight kick in front at the leaders board. Massive season for the white snakes with seasons end seeing obvious improvement in all areas. Most valuable player this year awarded to....the whole team go Cobras! OGCC Blue (19) Barwon Heads Heads (22) It was always going to be a hard battle for our last game playing over at Barwon Heads against an inform side but our Blue boys gave it everything they had, leaving nothing at the end. Coach Nige voiced how proud he was of the boys for their efforts during the tough game, with many displaying the skills learnt during the season. A great team effort by a group of boys who displayed some great footy during the

season. U/12’s OGCC Blue (46) Seagulls (1) For our final game the Cobra Blue boys headed to North Shore on a cold Friday night and took charge of the game straight away. It was a great display of team work again with each player willing to help out a team mate when needed with precision marking, tackling and handballing which left the opposition goal less for the game. A brilliant effort by a great bunch of Cobras! OGCC Orange (102) Torquay Shearer (2) The last game of 2015 saw the Cobras commence the game in a spritely fashion skipping out to an early lead at quarter time The Cobras running game was on show as they piled on 6.5 for the last quarter to run out easy winners. A great season of development by the boys and big thanks to Coach Craig! OGCC White (45) St

Albans Grinter (22) What a way for the mighty Cobra White boys to finish off the season! In front of a huge home crowd, the boys took charge right from the first bounce and never let St Albans get into the game. To finish off the season with their best game by far is a great thing and something they will remember for a long time to come. Well done on the season boys! U/14’s OGCC 1 (71) Barwon Heads (6) In perfect conditions the boys jumped out of the blocks Saturday, kicking three goals to one in the first quarter. At halftime our coach made some big changes to the forward and backline resulting in a 4 goal 5 behind quarter, continuing to keep Barwon Heads scoreless. Another dominant game from Mitch Taylor, Luke Giblin, Connor Pickett and Josh Lange sets the boys up for a finals appearance. OGCC 2 (71) St

Joseph’s 3 (12) Today’s match was a challenge to the Cobras to play four quarters of pressure football and they took it on from the first bounce winning contested football and playing as a team. More of the same consistent pressure was applied throughout each of the next three quarters with some very good ball movement and constant attack on the goals. A team building effort was seen today and this will take the Cobras into their first final full of confidence. Well done boys. OGCC 3 (20) Bannockburn 2 (52) Last one for the year was against Bannockburn at home. Coming off a great effort from last week set the tone for this match… and I wasn’t disappointed! We controlled the game for the first three quarters through hard work. Unfortunately couldn’t hold on at the end, but proud of you all. Thanks for a great year, Coach Wal.

FINALS BOUND: C grade action against Modewarre at the weekend. Pictures: LINDSAY KELLEY

Q&A with Candice Parker Ocean Grove A and B grade netball coach Candice Parker spoke with the Voice:

What do you love about netball? Love the club atmosphere. The competition of game and feeling of winning those elusive grand finals that keep you going back each year. Highlights of the 2015 season so far? Coaching A and B grade, great group of players. Tell me something not many people know about yourself? I was lucky enough to have been coached in my junior years by Lisa Alexander, now Australian Diamonds netball coach.

C grade cement finals spot OCEAN Grove A Grade finally found their four quarter performance on Saturday against Modewarre. Grove matched the Modda outfit all over the court and came home with the four points this week. C Grade have cemented their finals spot for 2015 with other teams having to wait out their finals fate till next week. A Grade – Ocean Grove 49 vs Modewarre 44 Best Players: T Birch, A Lee, E Moroney

Great game from the A Grade girls today incorporating a four quarter performance and reaping the rewards. Fantastic attacking game from Tina Birch and Alex Lee scoring at every opportunity with the gutsy youngster Emily Moroney taking on the Modda experienced players. B Grade – Ocean Grove 42 vs Modewarre 38 Best Players: S Greenwood, E Mercer, B Taylor

Another impressive game for the day from our B grade girls who fought hard and found their inner winning capabilities. Sarah Greenwood caused some grief for the Modda attackers along with speedy Bridget Taylor and Erin Mercer a shining light in the ring. C Grade – Ocean Grove 20 vs Modewarre 17 Best Players: B Fankhauser, A Binns, S Oates Today was a tight contest with Grove having to earn

the four points and a finals spot the hard way. Bree Fankhauser dominated the first half on the wing together with Amber Binns and Sherree Oates on the Grove attack. D Grade – Ocean Grove 27 vs Modewarre 30 Best Players: A Smith, J Sutton, B Walter D girls found their mojo in the last quarter but unfortunately it was too late to take the win. Adele Smith was superb on the wing with the versatile Brooke Walter starring

at both ends of the court and young Jesse Sutton coming on to help with the D goaling. 19U - Ocean Grove 28 vs Modewarre 24 Best Players: M Giblin, J El Hage, J Sutton A 10 goal third quarter set up this win but it was a tense tussle with no team giving an inch. Some great work from the Grove nursery players Michaela Giblin and Jaimie El Hage defending Modda's advances and Jesse Sutton mixing it up on the attack.

Last quarter fightback earns worthy win at Port' OCEAN Grove A Grade kept up with Portarlington to be only down by 4 goals at three quarter time but a determined last quarter from the Demons saw them steam away to a 14 goal lead at the final whistle. A Grade – Ocean Grove 28 vs Portarlington 42 Best Players: C Parker, B Friend, E Moroney The first three quarters were intense plus for the Grove side but Port applied the extra pressure needed in the last to claim

a comfortable win by 14 goals. Some brilliant defence work by the coach Candice Parker together with the attacking duo Bec Friend and young Emily Moroney controlling the centre passage. B Grade – Ocean Grove 43 vs Portarlington 39 Best Players: S Greenwood, A O'Keefe, V Rischitelli Another pressure game from the B grade side who stayed a tight unit to get the win. The defenders Sarah Greenwood and

Vanessa Rischitelli showed their true red and white colours keeping the Port goalers working hard and reliable Alyse O'Keefe worked effectively on the wing to feed Grove goalers. C Grade – Ocean Grove 30 vs Portarlington 15 Best Players: K Collett, S Oates, S Degenaro The C Grade train is motoring along nicely at the moment with a comfortable win over Port. It was another defenders game with

D Grade – Ocean Grove 31 vs Portarlington 20 Best Players: B Doolan, B Walter, F Needham D Grade had a physical encounter with the Demons to come away with the four points. Q&A with Aaron O'Callaghan AFL team supported Collingwood Most goals kicked in a match for Ocean Grove six against Newcomb in 2011 What has been your highlight playing at the Ocean Grove Football Club? Playing with my cousin Rowan O’Callaghan and getting to play BFL finals each year. Best player you have played with at the Grubbers James Dalton

KEY forward Daniel Maloney’s eight-goal bonanza saw Ocean Grove demolish Portarlington by 117 points at Ron Evans Oval on August 8. Maloney increased his goal tally to 54 from 13 matches and put him equal second on the BFL goalkicking table. The visitors side kept the home side to one goal until three quarter time and outside of Grove’s thrashings over winless Newcomb in rounds six and 15, it was the Grubbers' best defensive scoreboard effort in 2015. Ocean Grove coach Wayne Walsh said his players’ pressure and intent at the ball was first rate. “I just think it was our transition play and it was pressure around the football,” Walsh told Voice. “We’ve been at it all year, and in some games when our pressure is not there, we don’t play as well. Our pressure creates an atmosphere, when the ball turns we can really go. Defensively we are getting stronger and creating more

Ocean Grove coach Wayne Walsh addresses his team. goals for us offensively.” Dynamic forwards Daniel Freeman and Travis Gavin both played serviceable games and kicked three goals each. At times, the match became a spiteful and physical contest after Freeman was involved in a heated scuffle with Demons' players before half-time. Walsh said the incident involving Freeman, who had no case to answer with AFL Barwon Tribunal last week, proved a distraction for the opposition who only kicked 1.7.13 to three quarter time. “I don’t want to say too much about it... there was a stage in the game where they were still in the match and they (Portarlington) did lose their way after the

incident,” Walsh said. Ocean Grove dominated a flat Portarlington, which went scoreless in the third term, and led by 87 points at the last break. James McTaggart, Kane Reardon, Jack Rawlings and Andy Higgins all had good matches. Brayden Warren (back) was replaced in the side by defender Kaiden Long. while veteran Rowan O’Callaghan sustained a calf injury in the first half . IN the reserves, Portarlington was more competitive despite the Grubbers running away late in game to register a 18.10.118 to 12.6.78 win. Matt McCartney kicked four goals and youngster Christian West kicked three.

'Consistent footy' MARK HEENAN

OCEAN Grove are warming up for BFL finals and farewelled Memorial Reserve in style with an 84-point thrashing of Modewarre on Saturday August 15. The fourth-placed Grubbers (10-7) head into their away clash against Queenscliff on the back of a four-game winning streak this Saturday. The final four is set, and Ocean Grove’s nearest rivals Anglesea (fifth) and Queenscliff (sixth) will battle it out for last BFL finals spot and the right to play the Grubbers in the week one elimination final. THE Grubbers jumped the Warriors with a seven-goal first term and virtually extinguished the visitors slim hopes of making BFL finals as Ocean Grove led by a whopping 36 points at quarter time. Ocean Grove coach Wayne Walsh said his side came with purpose to start the game. “I thought our attitude, our first quarter today was fantastic,

our pressure game we brought was really good, I could not ask for any more,” Walsh said. “We are trying to play consistent footy and team football – I was pretty happy with the way we started.” Ocean Grove sharpshooter Daniel Maloney was dominant early and finished the match with seven goals. Maloney took his season tally to 61 goals from 14 games in 2015 and remains in third spot on the BFL goalkicking table. Modewarre fought back early in the second quarter and booted the first three goals thanks to good work from Warriors player Daniel Sturzaker who kicked two majors. “We probably lost our momentum a little bit around the middle of the ground (second quarter) so we had to arrest that, once we did we were fine again,” Walsh said. “They (Modewarre) kicked three goals in a row and how we responded to that was really good. “That was Modewarre’s chance

to jump for a finals spot – so it was a big game coming in.” Ocean Grove regained composure not long after and benefited with strong play across the midfield from Jack Rawlings and Andy Higgins. The home side led by 42 points at half time. Ocean Grove blew the margin out to 71 points at the final break thanks to a six-goal third quarter from home side. The Grubbers kicked six goals compared to the opposition’s four majors in the final term. Higgins, Ryan Hargrave Travis Gavin, Daniel Freeman, and Grubber captain Liam Rock, who played his first senior game since round 11 after he overcame an abductor injury, all kicked two goals apiece. Grubber regulars Aaron O’Callaghan (leg), James McTaggart (flu) and Rowan O’Callaghan (calf) did not play. OCEAN Grove’s final home and away season clash against Queenscliff is at Queenscliff Recreation Reserve this Saturday at 2:10pm.

Walsh is wary of a hungry Coutas outfit, a team who has a live chance of making BFL finals. “We want to have that finals type atmosphere and that pressure and see how we respond,” he said. “We think it is a great thing going into finals knowing that we have to be up and about and teams coming out at us to try and win to get in finals.” IN the Reserves curtain raiser clash, Ocean Grove extended their six-game winning streak with a solid 21-point win over Modewarre. Final scores were Ocean Grove 11.9.75 to Modewarre 7.12.54. Grubber players Sean Britt and James Stapleton both kicked two goals apiece. The home side had a dominant first quarter and led Modewarre, who were goalless in opening term, by 32 points at the first break. Ocean Grove reserves grade still sit in fourth position after 17 rounds with a 12-5 record and are only behind third-placed Geelong Amateur (12-5) on percentage.

Renovation boost MARK HEENAN

NEW Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club president Steve Peatling says the club's planned facility upgrades will be a great acquisition for the local community. Peatling, 48, replaced outgoing president Chris Paterson, who will stay

on as vice-president, at the Ocean Grove SLSC annual general meeting on August 2. The club is set to undergo a multi-million dollar renovation at the completion of the 2015/16 surf life saving season. Works are expected to take 18 months to complete.

“The actual building process will be staged, what we are hoping is to keep our facilities downstairs for as long as we can for storage and patrol gear and everything like that,” Peatling told the Voice. Peatling said the new facilities need to service the local community

and meet expectations of Ocean Grove SLSC's expanding membership base. “As far as the club goes we have got to keep evolving and providing a facility that is going to serve the needs of the community and surf patrol,” Peatling said. “We have such a fantastic

facility we have got to ultise it and have it used more widely through the public and through the community.” Peatling, a member of Ocean Grove SLSC committee for the last four years, was groomed into the role after serving as vice-president last season. Continued page 27.
