“We need a bigger Chicken Shop”. That’s the comment of one of the scores of teenagers who packed the local music venue on Saturday night to hear their peers perform for their VETs. Pretty good proof that we need somewhere for our youngsters to express their talent, don’t you think?

CLUB GROW CONSTRUCTION of the $5million Club Grove refurbishment at Ocean Grove, will start next Monday. Club General Manager, Michael Lewis, said that the Club is very excited to have the project get underway after many years in the planning. “We have gone to considerable lengths to ensure that we will deliver a new Club facility which will benefit our members as well as the wider community,” Mr Lewis said. This major refurbishment project will employ over one hundred tradesmen, and will incorporate a new restaurant and cafe, children’s recreation room, function rooms, sports and gaming lounges as well as a new and improved members’ lounge to accommodate the

Club’s growing membership base. “We have created a venue which will cater to a variety of needs and the quality and standard of our new offering will set a new benchmark not only for our region but for the Club industry as a whole,” Mr Lewis said. There will be a number of immediate

changes for those visiting the Club with the entrance to the car park now being from Lelean Street only, whilst construction is in progress. The Club’s Courtesy Bus will operate for extended hours during the renovation and there will also be “construction promotions and meal specials” on offer. The Club has appointed major building company Johns Lyng Group to undertake the building works. Michael Lewis said that the Club will continue to provide the majority of their services and activities during the refurbishment and encourages everyone to come and experience the transformation into the new Club Grove.

Shell Road Reserve: A landscape set to change.

Shell Road Reserve, Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve and Collendina Reserve have been developed to guide the future sustainable development of the existing reserves to accommodate the sporting needs of the local community. The master plans will provide direction on improving the functionality of the reserves, including sport and playground infrastructure, car parking and traffic management, site access and circulation and will address safety issues. President of the Ocean Grove Football Club, Geoff Cunningham, said "After many years of speculation and public interest in the relocation of football and netball to a more central and

prominent location, our club is extremely excited and ambitious with the prospect that we have a wonderful opportunity to relocate to the proposed Shell Rd sporting complex. “After lengthy negotiations with the City, the concept plan that has been proposed has been fully endorsed by the committee of the Ocean Grove Football Netball Club. “We are mindful that this is a community project and would hope that it is given total support and financially backed by all government bodies to ensure that the sporting facilities in Ocean Grove are as equal to any sporting groups within the Geelong region," he said. President of the Ocean Grove Netball Club, Sue Godfrey, also supported the draft plan. "This is an exciting and long awaited moment for Ocean Grove netball players. The four netball courts that

meet Netball Australia’s Venue accreditation together with new change rooms will ease the burden placed upon the exhausted conditions presently being played upon in Draper Street." President of Ocean Grove Cricket Club, Lucas Baulch, said “the Ocean Grove Cricket Club are very happy with the progress being made regarding the development of the plan for Shell Road Reserve. The facilities will be perfectly suitable for our club. Mark Rappa, the President of the Surfside Waves Soccer Club expressed his excitement for the project. “Surfside Waves Soccer Club is very excited with the progress of Shell Road Reserve, we are pleased with the way council has moved forward with trying to get the project off the ground. “Finally we are starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

As part of the 30 piece soul and motown ensemble, Sarah Giggins, Jess Ellwood and Kirsten Sattler are heading off for a three week tour of Italy and Switzerland. On their whirlwind tour they will play the renowned Montreux Jazz and Porretta Soul Music Festivals. Visibly excited about the trip, the girls couldn't decide what they were looking forward to the most. “The festivals will be great,” added Sarah. “I think the whole experience, especially getting to see (British band) Mumford and Sons at Montreux.” “I get excited just thinking about it,” said Jess. “Being with each other for three

weeks will be interesting.” The Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College band plays professional gigs both locally, nationally and internationally and have just released their eight halbum Secret which the girls all helped record. “It was a long day but it was really fun,” said Sarah. Their original title track of the album is currently number one on radio station Triple J’s Unearthed program. Both Sarah and Jess are drummers in the band but said they aren't in competition with each other as they have set songs. “We only fight if there are new songs up for grabs,” joked Jess.

In years 10 and 11, the girls are seasoned members of Sweethearts, having played in the band for about four years. Jess and Kisten are Bellarine Secondary College students whilst Sarah commutes to Sacred Heart. however they spend quite a bit of their week at Matthew Flinders not only rehearsing but completing their certificate IV in VET music. Although the band is about 30 members strong the girls said they’re all very close. “Everyone is really good friends,” said Sarah. Kirsten added that it helped that everyone has a similer taste and passion in music. “We all get stuck into the music, it's just a bonus that we all get along,” she said.

quick news Teen aid The local community is getting behind two Grove teens who were attacked on a night out in Geelong in March. The boys were out to celebrate an 18th birthday when they were attacked in Geelong’s CBD resulting in Daniel Dryden suffering a broken eye socket and bleeding on the brain and mate Dylan McKewan’s ear bitten off. Daniel’s mum Vicki said that now, six weeks on from the attack, he is doing well. “Daniel is doing really well, he has to visit the plastic surgeon next week but there’s no permanent damage,” Vicki said. Tamara Purcell who used to work at the Zebra Bar with both Daniel and Dylan is organising a dinner and auction at the Barwon Heads Hotel on Saturday May 22 to raise money for the boy’s ongoing medical and personal expenses. Tamara is hoping to raise about $10,000 on the night with the total amount to be split between the teens. Tickets to the event are $30 and include a two course dinner and auction. Pieces of sporting memorabilia are up for grabs as well as goods donated by businesses including Bar Deli and Amaze ‘n’ Games. After the auction has finished, the bistro will turn into a disco open to the public at 9pm. The $15 entrance fee will also be donated to the boys. Tickets are on sale at the Barwon Heads Hotel and the Green Room and for further information or to make a donation contact Tamara on 5256 2977

The Main Beach landmark is demolished, right Graeme Buchell on the site of the Grove’s new $1million toilet.

Water works

THE sight of a large crane and a drilling rig is part of the continuing replacement of Barwon Water’s Tuckfield Street sewerage pump station. Barwon Water this week prepared the site for drilling and started excavation of the pump well. Construction is expected to be completed in October, 2010. Meanwhile, Barwon Water will begin construction of a $1.3 million sewerage project to meet projected growth on the Bellarine Peninsula in the next few weeks. The project involves replacing a 1.75 kilometres section of sewer main between Bonnyvale Road and Tuckfield Street. The pipeline will follow the stormwater drain from Bonnyvale Road to Emperor Drive, then along the grass walking track on the northern perimeter of the Begola Wetlands to the Tuckfield Street pump station. The pipeline will run beneath four roads, including Bonnyvale Road, using modern ‘trenchless’ technology to minimise traffic disruption. Barwon Water General Manager Capital Projects and Greenhouse, Paul Northey said more than 7,000 properties would be serviced by the pipeline, which transfers sewage to the Black Rock water reclamation plant.

All Dunny GRAEME Burchell was the foreman on the job – so to speak – when Ocean Grove’s log cabin toilet block was built some 30 years ago. Fast forward to 2010 and it seems fitting that he’s there to oversee it’s demolition.

In fact Graeme has come full circle and it is now his own firm that won the contract to build its modern, environmentally friendly replacement. “I was working for Ian Dearly, Ocean Grove builders, then. “There were six of us

on site building the log cabin type walls. We’d never seen anything like that before. It was a special run of timber and had minimal nailing. It certainly stood the test of time.” Graeme said the new block would be vastly

different. The roof and surrounding paving will capture the water in an underground tank and this would provide 70 per cent of the flushing water needed in the peak months. In addition the new toilet block will be set

deeper into the land and set back so as to blend in with the landscape, much as the Dunes. The architect is Baade Harbour of Geelong. The new toilet block is expected to be completed by November. More details on page 17.

Boys’ Great Ocean effort

TEN-year-old mates Jesse Gallo-Carson and Johnny Mowat (pictured left) have raised close to $600 to help build an orphanage in Botswana. The two Ocean Grove Primary pupils helped organise a sausage sizzle at their school last week and then ran in the Great Ocean Road 6.5km run in 42 minutes on Saturday morning. Jesse got his training in by playing footy for the Cobras and walking JJ, his dog. Johnny said: “I run everywhere,” when asked what training he’d put in.

Ocean Grove’s Sally Humphrey amid the Field of Women.

OCEAN Grove has shown its support for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Bakers Delight owner Sally Humphrey joined 14,000 women and 100 men at the MCG on Friday 7 May to particiapte in the Field of Women Live 2010. Run by the Breast Cancer Network of Australia, the group formed a giant Pink Lady representing the amount of people diagnosed with breast cancer every year. “To be involved in such a special

event meant a lot to me to be able to support my Aunty who has survivied breast cancer twice,” Sally said. All funds raised from the night have gone towards the BCNA. Locally, Jill McCallum from Lily Bliss is providing a service for women who have had to undergo the trauma of losing one or both breasts to cancer. Jill has just completed training in fitting bras and prosthetics to women who have undergone a mastectomy and help restore

their body confidence. “The basic is to ensure the customer is fully comfortable with the body, especially after such an horrific experience," said Jill. “Mentally if you feel good, you look good, you’re confident and mentally you're boosted.” Women are able to come in as soon as six weeks after surgery to get fitted with a prosthetic. The government Medicare rebate on the prosthetics has also recently been increased to include the entire $330 fee.

“You’re just going back to being a normal woman, which is all what it's about,” said Jill. More women than Jill expected or thought would require the service have already come through her doors in the six weeks since she opened, including one woman travelling down from Melbourne to be fitted. “You don’t really realise how many women out there have had the breast cancer,” she said. “We're here to help.”

Sad Raptor tale Dear Editor Your story Majestic Raptor of Banks Road (Voice May 5-18, 2010) is a sad tale indeed. Unfortunately it will soon be forgotten along with the greed, lack of consultation and planning, and straight out arrogance of our leaders.

Like the Wathaurong people who lived for thousands of years along the Bellarine until the white settlers swept them away in a generation, the Majestic Raptor will just be another victim of progress. John Corlett Ocean Grove

OCEAN Grove’s John Bell and his son Travis recently completed one of the planet’s great must-do challenge’s of life, climbing to the base camp of Mount Everist. Having made their way from China via Tibet the pair and their fellow travellers then hiked up to a lung testing 6,500metres above sea level. The dynamic duo even managed to take their copy of the Voice to the new heights.

State View - Lisa Neville MP More funds for lifesavers

I am delighted to announce that Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club and Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club will both receive funding of $5,000 in this year’s State Budget. The grants are in addition to the $5,000 grants to both clubs that I announced earlier this year, and will further assist with running costs. These two clubs are a vital part of our Bellarine beach-side lifestyle and we rely on the wonderful contribution they make in keeping our beaches safe. The funding recognises their great service to our community.

Hospitals boost

The State Budget also included a major funding boost for health services, including additional beds and services for Geelong Hospital, and land for a second hospital in Geelong. This additional funding, and a new community hospital in Geelong, will ensure easier access to health services for Ocean Grove residents in the future.

New police for Victoria

An extra 1,966 extra police across Victoria announced recently is the biggest single boost to police numbers in the state’s history. The rollout will start this year and will see an additional 1,700 officers deployed to front-line policing and in addition, a further 266 sworn police officers moved from desk-bound jobs, such as call taking and dispatch in regional areas, into frontline roles, with administrative and support staff backfilling these positions. There has been a 17.98% increase in police numbers in the Geelong Police Service area since 1999 and a decrease in crime of 28% over this time. The State government has been working with Victoria Police to crack down on a range of public order offences, such as drunken and disorderly behaviour, hoon driving and graffiti. Since the legislation was introduced in late 2009, a total of 148 $234 fines have been handed out to troublemakers in Geelong. Hoon drivers have also been targeted in

Bellarine, with 21 drivers joining over 10,000 others across the State in having their cars impounded by police. These measures are all about making our community even safer.

Easy online access for carers

As the Member for Bellarine and Minister for Community Services, I recently launched the new online respite information service. The services provides the latest information for carers about respite services from all Commonwealth, State and Local Government programs available to people across the Bellarine and state-wide. The new online service links eight regional websites with the state-wide website that can be accessed at www.respitevictoria.org.au As always, please don't hesitate to contact my office if there are any issues I may be able to assist you with. day in the life - jodie griffiths

Drawn to the coast I HAVE been living back in Ocean Grove for about six years with my beautiful husband Tim and daughter Minnie. I originally came to Ocean Grove as a teenager, my family lived in Melbourne but we had a permanent site at Barwon Heads Caravan Park on the ridge overlooking the beach. In those days the park was like a community in itself and we made many good friends both there and in the towns of Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove. My Nana was from this area and she and my Pa came back here a few years after they retired from their jobs in Melbourne. I went to school in Melbourne but don’t see anyone from school as most of my social time was spent down here so that’s where I made my long term friendships. Ocean Grove changed a lot in the time I was away from here with work etc. I think the growth in the new estate is probably the biggest notable change for me and now the development of Target and it’s surrounds. The main street looks a bit different but I can still picture the way it was when I was younger so I guess it retains its body, just with a new suit. I have spent most of my working life in the newspaper industry and before having my daughter two years ago I was at the Geelong Advertiser. After some time as a mum and doing a little work for my husband I have returned to work with the Ocean Grove Voice. I spend some time at the office and some time working from home, this suits really well having a two year old as I still get to be with her. She spends a day in childcare and a day with

Grandma, so everyone wins. I wanted to work at the Voice as I think it’s a great publication with a really good focus on local issues, the bonus is I get to work with great people who are supportive of my needs as a mother and someone who loves her career. Now that I think my job is secure after my words of praise I can move on. The thing I love most about living in Ocean Grove is the proximity to so many great beach locations. I love taking my daughter and sometimes my dog to the beach or river and love being able to see the water from so many places whilst driving around. I worry about the infrastructure of the town in the coming years with the increase in population particularly with traffic and our roads. I feel we already have some congestion problems that will only increase with more people and cars. I would hate to see the town filled with traffic lights and roundabouts but we may not be able to stop that if we continue to grow. I also think the parking issues will be of concern particularly over summer and am fairly certain we can expect increasing fines before the issue is addressed. If I was to live anywhere other than Ocean Grove it would have to be in a warmer location, I’m not a fan of winter apart from going skiing and as you can’t ski in Grove it should remain warm here and cold at the mountains. I often have unrealistic thoughts such as this one but it’s ok to dream and maybe the Voice could get a petition going to Mother Nature.

High hopes for second miracle A YOUNG Grove couple are on the verge of expecting their second child beating all the odds. Tarah Dower and her partner Tom Smith had two year old Lola, their self confessed miracle baby after Tom was diagnosed with brain cancer, at only 22 years of age. Tarah had moved north to study Law after leaving school up at Byron Bay and was living at Lennox Head for all of two nights before meeting Tom at the local pub. The young couple had only been together for six months when Tom started complaining of severe headaches. “They were really bad one night and so I had to take him to the hospital,” said Tarah. Having previously been diagnosed with lymphatic cancer Tom had undergone surgery to remove his lymph nodes but was in remission at

the time his headaches started. “As soon as they bought up that he had cancer in the past they sort of clued on that if there was to be another cancer growth it would go to the closest organ which was the brain,” Tarah said. Tom was diagnosed with stage four malignant melanoma in his brain, the latest stage that cancer can get to. "There's no stage five," said Tarah. He was operated on within a week, had radiation therapy as well as chemotherapy for secondary cancer found in Tom's chest. “I guess that’s the miracle part," said Tarah. “They cut the cancer and everything out of his brain but the chemo worked on his chest and it really was an experiment, it had never been tried before and it worked."

Although the couple had frozen sperm for the future, Tarah fell pregnant whilst Tom was in chemotherapy but unfortunately had to give up the baby the due to the amount of chemicals in Tom's system at the time. “It was a blessing though in disguise because then we knew we could have a family, we can do this,” she said. After Tom went into remission in 2006, the couple waited a year until they decided to have their first child. “I totally wasn't that sort of person before I met him, I was about having fun, not thinking about family stuff at all.” After falling pregnant in August 2007, the couple moved back down to Ocean Grove to be close to Tarah's family. “Having a baby, thats the time where you need your mum.”

Lola was born in January 2008 and they are now expecting their second child in six weeks time. Despite Tom’s treatments they have never had any trouble conceiving which surprised them. “It literally happened the first time , we were really lucky,” said Tarah. Tom has been in remission for 4 years now but still requires scans and blood tests every six months. “It’s really a miracle that he is still in remission.” Tarah is philisophical about the rushed start to their family and admits that with the mindset she was in at the time, if Tom wasn't diagnosed with cancer, they probably wouldn't be together now. “It’s only because we went through that crazy journey together and I realised what I nearly lost,” she said.

VINES Lawyers and Conveyancing firm has moved - across the other side of the road. The firm which was established in the town in November 2003 along with lawyer John Green, now has seven staff and has expanded its client base across the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast. Last week the firm celebrated their move to larger and modernised premises by inviting a number of partner firms, family and friends along for a light after hours drink and nibble.

A new coastal incentive program known as CoastalTender has been funded by the Australian Government to implement long term protection and enhancement of the coastline within the Corangamite region. This new funding will support land managers in the management and conservation of native vegetation and habitat on properties (>1ha) along the Corangamite coastline, including revegetation with indigenous species. The project will cover the entire coastline for the Corangamite region, as well as areas surrounding the Port Phillip Bay and Bellarine Peninsula Ramsar sites which fall within the Corangamite region. The current budget for the first round of CoastalTender is approximately $500,000. It is open to private land owners, local government shire councils and foreshore committees of management to undertake works on land that they directly manage. Land managers who formally express interest in the scheme will receive an obligation-free site assessment, and a draft management plan. The plan will contain a vegetation assessment and provide advice on management options. Following this, the land manager will be invited to submit a tender nominating the bid price they are seeking in order to undertake the management actions as outlined in the management plan. Tenders will then enter a competitive tender evaluation process. Once successful tenders have been determined, a five year agreement based on the agreed actions included in the bid will be signed. Land managers can also opt to include long-term protection commitments in their agreement, which will improve their competitiveness. Under these agreements, the land manager will receive financial incentive payments. Only actions that are over and above those required by current responsibilities under existing arrangements and legislation will be eligible for support. For further information, and to register an Expression of Interest, please telephone Polly Matthews on 0417 511 999 (Monday to Wednesday) or visit the website at www.ccma.vic.gov.au – be quick because oversubscription in the scheme may result in later registrations missing out.

Neighbourhood Watch Ocean Grove Areas 39/43 MAY 2010 NEWSLETTER Once again we would like to sincerely thank “Ocean Grove Voice” for donating and publishing our Newsletter for Areas 39/43. Next meeting The next get together will be held on Monday, 14th June, 2010, at the Uniting Church Hall, Eggleston Street, Ocean Grove, at 7.30 p.m. All welcome. Supper is supplied by the Rolling Pin Pie and Cake Shop. Open day – Bellarine Police Station On Saturday April 17, the Bellarine Police held an Open Day for residents to come along and inspect the Police Station and partake in a Sausage Sizzle. A bike ride was also held to raise money for the Chile disaster, via Australian Red Cross. A total of $ 980.00 was raised on the day and it is hoped to make this an annual event with monies raised each year to go to charity. Bowel cancer awareness Bowel Cancer is the second highest cause of cancer deaths, after lung cancer, and affects 1 in 18 males and 1 in 26 females in Australia. If detected early enough 90% of cases can be cured. Rotary is conducting its annual testing and awareness program and test kits are available from your local pharmacy during MAY. We recommend that everyone over 40 should have an annual test, and we urge you to take advantage of this offer. For further information phone: Bowelscan Information Line on 1300 779 694. Fire safety – heaters Fire Brigades experience an increase in house fires during the winter months. Statistics show that heating appliances

are a major cause of these fires. Here is some good advice to avoid fires caused by heaters at home : * When your heater is installed ensure the manufacturer’s instructions are followed. * Check your heaters before first use each winter. * Flues and chimneys require cleaning once a year. * To protect children – check that their night clothes are labeled “Low Fire Danger”. * Natural fabrics, especially wool, have a low fire danger. * Always supervise children in rooms with heaters. * Keep clothing, curtains and toys at least 1 (one) metre away. * Before you go to bed or leave your house, ensure fires are extinguished and heaters are turned off at their power source. Petrol thefts With petrol prices rising, self service petrol stations have become regular targets for thefts of petrol (Petrol Driveoffs). Victoria Police, working with the VACC and Petrol Companies, has implemented pre pay petrol initiatives, both in the Metropolitan and Regional Communities, leading to a reduction in thefts in these areas. Thought for the month With the oncoming Winter months, make sure that your vehicle is safety checked for driving in wet and dark conditions. Especially check that all lights on the vehicle are working correctly. It is most disconcerting and dangerous for other drivers when only 1 headlight, taillight or turning indicator is working.

THE Rotary Club of Ocean Grove recently presented certificates of thanks to a number of local supporters and sponsors at its regular Tuesday meeting. Help that Rotary gets enables it to put more funding and help straight back into the community.

Pretty looking shrub dweller FAIRY Wrens are one of the prettiest and most well known birds in Australia. I have seen them in Ocean Grove in the shrubs around the beach, and in Kingston Park, Begola Wetlands and the Nature Reserve. The Wrens congregate in flocks of between two to six birds. These flocks consist of co-operative groups of non-breeding males, juveniles and a dominant male and female. They chatter and sing very noisily, so it is very obvious when they are around. They tend to move around from shrub to shrub very rapidly, so often they are difficult to photograph! Superb Fairy-wrens are found south of the Tropic of Capricorn through eastern Australia and Tasmania to the south-eastern corner of South Australia. Fairy wrens are found where there is a suitable dense ground cover and low shrubs. They are common in urban parks and gardens. The males of each species are quite distinct, but the females and young birds are often difficult to separate, as the males often possess very striking black and blue plumage, and the

females are usually a drab brown with a pale blue tail. The belly is greyish white and wings are brown. Non-breeding and young males are similar. Fairy wrens have an interesting social relationship with one another. They are ‘monogamous’ in that one male and female will pair, but both are sexually promiscuous, each mating with many other males and females nearby. Fairy Wrens are the least faithful of all birds and about 5% of males sire over 50% of the offspring each year! Every males dream! Apparently females will be attracted to the male with the best, most attractive plumage so that her offspring will inherit the ‘best’ plumage. Fairy Wrens mostly feed on insects. They forage for food on the ground, but may also feed from low bushes. Feeding takes place in the small social groups The breeding season lasts from July to March, with most activity occurring between September and January. Some breeding males retain their blue colour all year round, but that is the exception rather than the rule. Once the breeding

Less than a call away OCEAN Grove has arrived in the 21st century – with its first mobile phone shopping opening in the town this month. Dimitri Halkidis has opened Nova Phones, an Optus dealership that specialises in providing mobile phones, mobile accessories and electronic games. “I established this business because I’ve been in many situations where I’ve had to go all the way to Geelong for a new phone, or to hand my phone in for repair. It’s frustrating, having to travel for half an hour for an item that had become such an integral part of our lives. “When I completed my university course and began helping my dad with his business, I entertained the idea that a mobile phone store here in Ocean Grove seemed almost a necessity, and with the opening of the new Ocean Plaza, that idea became more cemented in reality. I contacted Optus, and was happy to realise that they were actually searching for someone to assist them in opening an Optus premium dealer! “Soon afterwards the long and exhaustive process of setting up a business begun, but it was all worth it! Now the rest of Ocean Grove, and consequently most of the Bellarine Peninsula, doesn’t need to travel all the way to Geelong for their mobile phone needs. “I’ve lived in Ocean Grove for almost all of my life. My family moved here when I started kindergarten, and as a result I’ve called Ocean Grove home since before I could read. “My family established a successful construction company, Starline Properties, and I learned a lot about business through watching how my parents worked. “After finishing high school at Christian College, I enrolled at Deakin University in a Professional and Creative Writing course. Writing has always been my passion, but helping my dad made me realise that business is in my blood! “My passion for writing originated from my love of books. When I was younger I would devour any book I came across, and every now and then I would try my hand at writing something. Over the years my interest

in writing grew, until eventually I decided I would pursue it as a possible career choice. “But the writing industry is a difficult one to get in to, so I decided that - at least for the moment - my writing would be treated as a hobby rather than a profession, and I would pursue my other passion, business, instead. But in order to keep my writing skills sharp, I made a promise to myself to write at least 500 words per day of anything that came to mind, whether fiction or non-fiction. “I began this venture in October of last year, and have not missed a day since then. I don’t

Surfside Centre Volleyball results REPORT FOR 14.5.10 VOLLEYBALL GAMES Division 2 Hit me vs Phantom Heroes Heroes winning in 3 sets 25-16, 25-19, 25-13, 10-9 Tiprats vs Grovers Grovers winning in 3 sets 25-15, 25-19, 25-21, 3-3 Division 1 games Stingers vs Phantoms Black Blacks winning in 2 sets Stingers winning 1 set No report Blacks 25-21, 25-7, 16-19 Phantoms Devils vs Team Wave Devils winning in 2 sets 25-21, 2515, 13-9 Team Wave did a great job to take Devils to tight first set, Devils at times seemed a little slow in getting their act together and Team Wave took advantage of that. Good to see that Team Wave tried something different this game with brother and sister pairing of Melissa and Mitchell Clarke and

also the pairing of Skye Davince and Matt Trotter. Both Skye and Mitchell did a great job of setting for their spikers, the balls were high in the air and gave the spikers plenty of time to get in position. Melissa and Matt did a fantastic job of spiking and with Matt on the net blocking it was a good set. Second set saw Team Wave go off the boil a bit and made Devils job a bit easier. At times they had 3 setters on their side which can get a bit confusing but they seemed to work it out in the long run. Great to see Cheryl Moore encouraging her team along and doing some great blocking on the net and Lyn Edlich helping her team along with some fantastic setting both back court and front court. 6 Pact vs Bandits 6 Pact winning 3 sets 25-10, 25-17, 20-17 6 Pact were definitely letting Bandits know who was in control

The Voice Professional 5255 3233 ads@oceangrovevoice.com

in this game. With Harrison Foott wining 10 points in a row for his team with some jump serves and also changing the serves to some that just cleared the net, which made Bandits sit up and take notice. Second set saw Bandits step up a bit more with Anne Kuklych doing some awesome passing on the back line and Steve Clarke doing some absolutely death defining spikes that were so close to the net it almost took your breath away. So not to be beaten Daniel Kuklych for 6 pact did some back court spiking that made it look so easy and effortless. Mind you there is a lot of age difference between Daniel and Steve, Steve with a lot of experience and cunning and Daniel with age and athleticism on his side, you will have to watch this young fella he will be a great volleyball champion. Good work on both teams. Have a great week and catch up again next time.

The effort they gave, the way they fought so hard and competed and just did everything they could on a night when we simply could not get our shots to drop proves they are not far away from that elusive victory. I am very, very proud of my team. Bob Parker (coach) U 18 Boys The under 18 Bellarine storm boys played Ringwood on the 7th of May. In a game where the scoreboard changed from one team’s favour to another, Ringwood ended up victorious by 5 points 37 to 32. Strong work under the ring and fast breaks lead to Ringwood’s victory. Away Team: Collingwood (Halftime score: 16) Fulltime score: 27 Top Point Scorers Name: Carly Sanders (Points: 15) Name: Hayley Grasso (Points: 4) The under 12 girls played the top team in Collingwood who were undefeated so far in the season. The girls started the game very focussed and did not let Collingwood get away to a start. Their defence was fantastic and the pressure we put on them was great. I gave the job of defending the tallest player to Hayley Grasso who did a fantastic defensive job on her. The girls played a great team game passing the ball brilliantly and ensuring the best possible shot was taken. Carly Sanders was great under the basket making most shots that she took and scoring 15 points for the team. Courtney Kroezen and Holly Montgomery played an excellent defensive game both chasing down any fast break that Collingwood tried. Raini Matthews was a strong player off the bench and assisted with the Defensive press with lots pressure that caused turnovers in the middle of the court. Crystal McKinnon had great vision in stealing the ball when Collingwood succumbed to the pressure up the front of the press and once again was instrumental at the end of the game in nearly pulling off a win. Georgia McKinnon was solid while she was on the court and contributed with a great basket under pressure. Georgia White ran and tried hard while she was on the court and is improving every week. Skye Polley had her first game back after a serious ankle injury and fitted back into the team well. She was very strong in defence and always a threat in offence. It was a great game and the girls did an awesome job to come so close to a good team in Collingwood. Next time we may go that next step. Lisa Burnham (coach) 14-5-2010 U16 Victorian Championship Division Ladder Position-2nd Bellarine 73 Defeated Melton 42 Scorers; Bree Matthews 30pts,Sarah Welfare 21pts,Alice Teague Neeld 15pts, Bronte Burke 10 Rebs A win is a win but the girls can play better than they did this week and will be tested by the Tigers next week, but a 7 game winning streak is impressive from Bellarine.

Cobras Blue stealing the show, so far Cobras Under 14 (1) Round 5 vs. Inverleigh After three tough grading games we travelled out to Inverleigh and came home with a resounding win, our first of the season. Jed Evans and James Stirling dominated in the ruck and for the first time this season we gained the clearances through the good work of Che Durran, Christian West and Matt Caldow. With 9 different goalkickers the forward line functioned well with space left for Luke Bastiaan and Miles Henderson to lead into, with Zac Dynes, Nat Gravener and Lachlan Barber dangerous at ground level. Final score Cobras 16 15 111 Inverleigh 2 1 13. Goal Kickers - Luke Bastiaan 5, Jed Evans 3, Zac Dynes 2, Lachlan Barber, Matt Caldow, Zaine Cordy, Nat Gravener, Josh Prendergast and Christian West 1 Each. Good luck to Brayden Warren and Curtly Balshaw on recovery from injuries and hope you can both rejoin the team soon Cobras Under 14 (2) Round 5 vs North Geelong The team faced off against a much bigger team and found it tough to stay in the game. Despite trying hard all day and with some great individual efforts from the likes of Rob Proctor, Riley Denneman and Nick Anastassio, the Cobras unfortunately were no match for North Geelong. Jack Ness was captain and fired the Cobras up with both Zac Ramsay and Vincent McDonald responding with goals. Cobras 2.1.13 North Geelong 11.11.77 Best: R.Proctor, R.Denneman, N. Anastassiou Goals: Z.Ramsay, V.McDonald Under 14 (3) Round 5 vs Barwon Heads Despite a great team effort the Cobras went down to the side from across the bridge at Barwon Heads. Zac Bellman did all the things a good captain should and was backed well by the likes of Ted Trevean who booted a couple of majors and Anthony Wilkens who snagged one himself. Will Gant played great footy with clean disposals as did Hamish Drake but it wasn’t quite enough this time around. Cobras 3.3.21 Barwon Heads 9.8.62 Best: W.Gant, T.Trevean,

Cobras u14 2s during their tough game against Bannockburn. H.Drake Goals: T.Trevean 2, A.Wilkens 1 Under 12 Blue Rnd 4 vs Cobras Orange Captained by Jonty Crbec and Hugh Browne, in what was a fantastic team effort the boys played with increased determination and confidence. It was great to have Darcy Pearson back from injury putting in a solid display driving the ball forward from the centre and setting up some early goals for the Cobras Blue. Jezz Savage was strong in defence and moved the ball quickly. With a strong charge in the last quarter from Cobras Orange keeping Cobras Blue scoreless and kicking 2 goals and 5 points, Corey Ivec was kept busy in defence with some courageous tackling and strong defensive play. A great team effort! OGCC Orange 2-5-17 OGCC Blue 11-10-76 Best Players: Darcy Pearson, Jezz Savage, Corey Ivec. Goal Kickers: Spencer Luppino 1, Fletcher Sharrock 2, Finn Chappell 2, Kyle Ewart 2, Byron Taylor 2, Michael Smith 1, Sam Quigley Under 12 Cobras Blue Round 5 vs Thomson In what was a very even contest, Cobras Blue had a great tussle with Thomson, before the Cobras 4 point victory at the end of the final

term. Captained by Cody Richardson and Corey Pfeiffer, it was a very even contest. With Darby McEvoy doing a great job in the ruck, Finn Chappell was able to clear the ball out of the centre and into attack. Byron Taylor once again showed his strengths with some strong marks and precise kicking into the forward line. Up by only 2 points going in to the last quarter and kicking into the wind, it was always going to be a close finish, with some great team play and determination the Cobras pulled off a great victory. Well done Cobras! OGCC Blue 5-14-44 Thomson 6-4-40 Best Players: Byron Taylor, Darby McEvoy, Finn Chappell. Goal Kickers: Darcy Pearson 1, Cody Richardson 1, Spencer Luppino 1, Kyle Ewart 1, Byron Taylor 1. Under 12 White Rnd 4 vs Barwon Heads Up against the undefeated Barwon Heads side on their home turf was always going to be a big ask. Barwon Heads dominated early but the Cobras hard work started paying off in the 2nd half getting a lot more of the ball. The Cobras last quarter was full of running and team play allowing Hamish Drake to score a couple of great goals and matching the Barwon

Heads sides score. Cobras White 4.1.25 Barwon Heads 13.23.101 Best: K.Meyer, B.Hamilton, H.Milne,T.Wallis, P.Attard, J.Synott Goals: H.Drake 2, B.Gist 1, N.Weatherly 1 Under 12 White Round 5 vs Belmont Lions Another tough ask for the Cobras playing the undefeated Lions on their big home ground under lights. The Cobras tried hard with their never give up attitude all night but were unable to match their opponents possession game through the midfield. All credit goes to the Cobras defenders for their tireless pressure and tackling right to the final siren which kept Belmont to their lowest tally this year. Cobras White 1.1.10 Belmont 10.11.71 Best: K.Lock, K.Lattarulo, R.McHugh, N.Weatherly, R.Maloney, D.Lindsell Goals: O.Young 1 Under 12 Orange Rnd 4 vs Cobras Blue In a tough local derby, the Blue side jumped Orange and went out to a commanding lead by playing great team footy. The Orange boys, led by captains Jack Tregenza and Joshua Lancaster finally got going after half time (must have been the Beach House Lolly Shop lollies) playing some fantastic and clever football. Nicky Foster was once again outstanding as were big men Ben “daisy” Pickering and the ever present number 18 in Jacob Bond. It was great to see hard man Nathan Taylor in the line up after missing the season to a broken arm up to now. Daisy chipped in with a ripper goal as did the hard running Tom Smith. The Orange side finished off the game well which is what coaches and supporters love to see. Orange 2.5.17 Blue 11.10.76 Best: J.Bond, B.Pickering, N.Foster Goals: B.Pickering 1, T.Smith 1 Under 12 Orange Rnd 5 vs South Barwon Red The orange side certainly came to play today. With a few big guns missing due to Mothers Day commitments and a late injury withdrawal from gun Riley Featherby, the boys needed no further incentive to come out firing. Jonathon Brown lookalike Luke Fisher and the human greyhound Craig Goodger

Lining up a kick for the u14 2s. were made captains and led the side out on to the Snakepit where the Cobras played a great brand of footy. They blocked and supported one another while disposing of the ball well and making smart football decisions. William Blackman risked everything time and time again putting his head over the ball as did Jesse Gallo Carson who was strong in defence and tough in the middle. Lachlan Taylor played strongly in the last line of defence in the final quarter stopping everything South Barwon threw at the Cobras. The Cobras stuck to their game plan and had a great victory. Well done to all! Cobras 12.11.83 South Barwon 5.8.38 Best: L.Taylor, J.Gallo Carson, W.Blackman Goals: Z.Leist 3, J.Bond 1, P.Attard 1, E.Bell 1, L.Gawley Price 1, B.Pickering 1, B.Schwartz 1, J.Tregenza 1 Under 10 Cobras Orange Round 4 vs Cobras Blue Again the boys got off to a slow start but what a cracker of a game it was. Orange against Blue, mate against mate and didn't they go in hard. Ben Bennett was doing some great work in the packs, bringing his team-mates into it and driving the ball long. All the boys were tackling hard and the endeavour was fantastic. Shaun Bradley had plenty of the ball and laid a couple of great tackles leading to turnovers. The boys were working for each other and the tide

started to turn. After half time Cobras Orange started to work together to peg back the lead. Rory Monteith was providing plenty of dash across half forward and slotted one through on the run. They outscored Blue for the quarter and continued on in the last. Jace Franken put one through early in the last and when Mitch Taylor and the hardworking James Gillians added majors Orange were playing like a well oiled machine. The game was played in great spirit and the boys had heaps of fun as Cobras Blue prevailed by 19 points. Cobras Blue 8. 3. 51

Cobras Orange 4. 8. 32 Under 10 Orange Round 5 vs Portarlington The boys travelled to Ervin reserve to take on Portarlington. The game started well with prize recruit Harry Rowsell showing plenty in the ruck giving his team-mates first use of the ball. When big Hazza drifted forward to take a strong mark and goal the boys got around him like a good team does. The tackling was ferocious and Ezra Cuthell was putting his body in and moving the ball on for his team. The Cobras started to move the ball well, providing blocks and shepherds for their team-mates and the forwards dominating. Jace Franken slotted one from the edge of the square and when Nicholas Warner and Mitchell Taylor added majors after some superb team play the Cobras were looking like winners. Port came back strongly in the third quarter and early in the last to close the margin. Nathan Scarpa was playing his heart out keeping Port at bay. Noa Northam took the ball across half forward, burst through the tackle, took a bounce and kicked truly for the sealer. Some strong defence in the last couple of minutes saw the Cobras have their first win of the year by 3 points. The tackling, shepherding and fantastic team spirit put a smile on every player and parent's face. Go Cobras Cobras Orange 5. 5. 35 Portarlington 5. 2. 32

DURING the last two weeks the under 16 footballers had two very successful games nights as part of the Read the Play program. At the Ocean Grove Football Netball clubrooms Michael Parker from Headspace Barwon ran the nights which showed the 50 or so young men how important it is to look after their mental health and that “it’s ok to say it’s not ok”. While eating pizza and lollies the players found out in a fun way how to look out for your mates and how easy it is to get help if you or someone you

FAST, RELIABLE AND

EFFICIENT SERVICE OCEAN Grove heads into their first break of 2010 with a 4-3 record, thanks largely to a 76-point demolition of lowly placed Portarlington at home on Saturday. The 19.18.132 to 8.8.56 win over the Demons was orchestrated by bustling forward Bernie Lynch’s terrific eight goal-haul, while livewire forward Travis Gavin chimed in with five majors. The Grubbers dominated from the first bounce courtesy of a six-goal opening quarter blitz, while the Demons failed to kick a goal by quarter time. Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor was pleased with his side’s intense tackling and forward pressure that prevented the visitors from seriously challenging the home side. “It is something we have been trying to work on for the season and in some games in passages we have (done the forward pressure) well,” McGregor said. “It was certainly one of the focuses not just with forward pressure, but tackling pressure right around and across the ground.” Along with Lynch and Gavin, McGregor praised the efforts of hard-running halfback Ryan Baker who help set up numerous forward entries. “Yeah his greatest asset is how he reads the footy, he

has got composure and he has certainly given us plenty of drive,” he said. Ocean Grove, who prides itself as one of the league’s best fourth quarter teams, were not able to achieve the ultimate 100-point victory as the fast finishing visitors almost doubled their own score in the final quarter kicking 4.3. Sweeping defender Chris Dickenson and Cameron Gourley, who kicked two goals, were among the best players for Portarlington. McGregor said his team could ill afford to have mental lapses during the match, especially if it wants to claim a big opposition scalp like Queenscliff and Drysdale. “I don’t know whether it is a mental thing that we switched off again, we did the last couple of games in patches, and we have done it again today,” he said. He admitted the group will have to take a greater leadership role in the absence of injured playing assistant Rowan O’Callaghan, who broke his leg only minutes into the Anglesea clash in Round 6. O’Callaghan, a former star player with Barooga in the

Murray Football League, is likely be sidelined for more than eight weeks. “It was (a blow to lose Callaghan), we lost him in the five-minute mark of the first quarter last week, so we were one down and one of our midfielders down,” he said. “We are asking all our blokes to step up week in week out, and they are doing that at times and we just need a more consistent result from them all.” Meantime no Bellarine Football League games will be played this weekend due to Interleague. Grubber players including James Dalton, Bernie Lynch, Greg Costello, James McTaggart and Patrick West have all been named in a squad to take on the Murray Football League in Bendigo on Saturday. In Round 8, Ocean Grove will face their biggest test Queenscliff, who sit one game clear at the top of the BFL ladder. “Queenscliff are on fire at the moment they are the form side of the competition, we need to improve a bit on what we have been doing to be competitive with them,” McGregor said. Game starts at 2:10pm on Saturday May 29 at Queenscliff Recreation Reserve.

Bombs, Barrels and Broken Boards WITH a solid ground swell and offshore winds predicted things looked very promising for the Tonik sponsored third comp for the 13th Beach Boardriders on Saturday May 8th. First light gave us a glimpse of what the day would bring, with waves moving through Beacon and Hutto’s in the 5ft plus range. With such large and unpredictable conditions, it was decided that the Groms and Women’s Division should be surfed at Grove and only the Junior Men and Open Divisions were to be held at 13th. Early free surfers showed the gathered crowd what could be expected. Big barrels for those who picked the right wave, and a beating for those who were a little slow to their feet or not fully committed. With 3 boards broken by the start of competition everyone was aware of the consequences.

The Junior Men competitors showed a great deal of pluck and commitment and handled the tricky conditions with flair and courage as they battled the solid conditions. The final pitted the Harfield brothers against each other in a fantastic exhibition of big wave surfing with younger brother Gus just edging out his elder, Banjo with Willis and Kayeera taking the minor places. The Open A surfers relished the big conditions. Sim and Ben Collier, Josh JohnsonBaxter, Matt Devitt and Grant Stringer were in excellent form and put on a masterful display of tube riding and power surfing. Final Results were Josh Johnson-Baxter first followed by Simon Collier, Matt Devitt and Grant Stringer in fourth place. Despite getting caught inside, and having to battle a flood of white water and a huge paddle, Lewie Speranza took out his second Open B

comp for the year. Second place went to Leigh Butcher, third was Nic Stephens and fourth was Nat Gretski. The Masters Division saw Shane Vincent take the wipe out and hold down of the day, when a rogue set saw him caught inside. “Shano” still managed a second place behind Dick Field with Grant Hutchins in third and Rob Petho fourth. Grant Stringer backed up his solid performance in Open A with a win in the Senior Men’s Division. Shane Eagles surfed a strong final to finish second with Shane Vincent third and Damian Robinson fourth. Conditions at the Grove were perfect for the Cadets. Austin Haire in his first comp since arriving home from a couple of years surfing the sunshine coast took out first place. The consistent Myles Fletcher was second while the very promising Harrison brothers, Tom and

Pictures: Gary Stephens Billy were third and fourth respectively. In the Junior Women’s Division, Sapphire Main continued with the excellent form she has shown in the past two events by taking out her third title for the year. The minor places were filled by Paige Kilfoyle, Grace Roberston and Jemimah Hutchins. Ash Wall’s good form in the Open Women has continued with her second win for the year. She surfed powerfully and with confidence to defeat Lizzy Ryan with Paige Kilfoyle and Georgia G rounding out the minor places. Micro groms and their parents should check the web site www.13thbeachboardriders.com for details of the timing of their next event as the last expression session was postponed due to mothers Day.
