By CARLY HELWEG IN 2007 Ocean Grove’s Alicia Withington was given a death sentence by her doctors. Not only was the 32-year-old told she was likely to die, she was also told that if she survived, she would never have children. Now, four years later, not only is Alicia fit and well, she is also 21 weeks pregnant. Alicia was diagnosed in June 2007 with an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) which is a tangled mesh of abnormal blood vessels directly connected to arteries in the brain. As Alicia had a particularly large group of AVMs, if they ruptured it could cause instant death and, due to their size and position in the brain, doctors wouldn’t operate. As part of her diagnosis

A HOAX phone call to triple zero has put lives at risk. Eight Bellarine emergency service vehicles including police, CFA, SES and ambulance attended what turned out to be a false alarm in Barwon Heads on October 4. Bellarine police said they received an emergency call on the Tuesday night reporting a car crash on Geelong Road in Barwon Heads. “The story was four people were injured so we were out to save lives,” Acting Senior Sergeant David Magher said. Bellarine-based emergency vehicles rushed to the address to find there was no accident and proceeded to search Barwon Heads. “As soon as the call came through we left the station
Senior Sgt Magher said. “We spent the next half an hour patrolling Barwon Heads, so in that time we had the whole 12km area searched and found nothing.” Senior Sgt Magher said the number of Bellarine’s Emergency Services that attended the hoax call meant potential real emergencies could not have been attended to as quickly as usual. “If you add all that up, eight vehicles with about 20 emergency service personnel, it does tie us up in attending other triple zero callouts or patrolling the area,” he said. Phone calls made to triple zero along with the caller’s location and phone number are all recorded and Bellarine Police is using

doctors also informed Alicia she would not be able to have children. “He said ‘I don’t even know how long you’ve
got to live; you won’t have a baby in this lifetime’, which broke my heart,” she said. Eventually Alicia and her
husband, Daniel, found a Sydney doctor who was willing to perform the risky surgery which only had a 20 per cent survival

Soccer lighting win SURFSIDE Waves Soccer Club has received $100,000 towards much-needed lighting at the Shell Road reserve. The club was one of 11 Victorian clubs who were granted a share in $840,000 from the Victorian government’s Strengthening the World Game program. The funding will provide lighting for two soccer pitches at the Shell Road Reserve. Surfside Waves president Brian Burgess said the club was over the moon to hear its grant application had been approved. “We couldn’t be happier, the lighting will be a very welcome addition to the club,” he said. Member for Western Victoria David O’Brien congratulated the club on its successful application. “This funding boost will

ensure Surfside Waves Soccer Club can not only cater for growing demand but accommodate even more people from the wider community wanting to join in the fun,” Mr O’Brien
said. “By improving local facilities and playing conditions we can boost memberships, participation, home ground support and get more people more active more often at Shell Road
Reserve”. Councillor Jan Farrell said she was thrilled with the announcement. “The funding for the lights on the soccer fields is fantastic news,” she said.
Works on the Shell Road infrastructure will begin shortly, as will other planning.” I am also working alongside the sporting clubs on the design of the pavilion,” she said.

GREEN WEDGE: Peter Gumley and Vivian Kershaw at the community garden site on The Parade.
Garden project approved OCEAN Grove’s green thumbs and budding gardeners are one step closer to having a community garden, with approval granted for a site. Geelong City Council has approved the lease on a block of land on The Parade behind the Ocean Grove Senior Citizen’s building for use of a site for a community garden. Ocean Grove
Community Garden Committee chairman Peter Gumley said the group was pleased to know the project it had been working on since February last year would definitely be going ahead. “The project is going ahead, we’re in the process of applying for grants … it’s encouraging to have movement in our planning processes,” Mr Gumley said.
A planning day will be held at the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre on Sunday, November 6, from 10am to 2pm and is open to anyone from the community. Peter said the planning day gave the committee a chance to hear ideas from the community and find out what the public’s expectations for the garden were. “I feel there are ideas in
the community that we haven’t even thought of yet,” he said. “We need to know what the community expectations for the garden are; would they like private plots or totally communal space? We don’t know.” For more information or to RSVP to the planning day, email ogcommunitygarden@ gmail.com
OCEAN Grove’s Mark Hyland won an award at last weekend’s Australian Commercial Radio Awards. The Bay FM presenter took home the award for Best Program Director in the provincial division on Saturday night. The Geelong radio veteran, who has been on local airwaves for 15 years, was up against two other directors in his division from Tasmania and Queensland. The awards were held at Jupiter’s Casino on the Gold Coast and were co-hosted by special guest Kelsey Grammer, best known for his role on Frasier. Hyland is an avid surfer who tries to squeeze in a paddle on weekends and even before work.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: The hikers early in the day; Ebony Jemmett cold and wet but safe; and the group before the trek with Ebony at centre.
Hiker’s lucky escape AN Ocean Grove woman has described her terror of being caught on Sabah’s Mount Kinabalu during a tropical storm last month. Ebony Jemmett spent 10 days in Sabah on Malaysian Borneo as part of an adventure holiday during the September school holidays. The 25-year-old was one of four people on a three day tour to climb Mount Kinabalu, the tallest mountain in South East Asia at 4095 metres above sea level. Ebony said they weren’t concerned about the weather on day one of the trek with their Mt Kinabalu National Park guide. “It was windy towards the end, it started spitting after lunch then there was a really cold wind and cloud cover but we didn’t think much of it,” she said. The group was one of 15 that stayed on the mountain that night as part of the climb. At 3am on September 27, Ebony’s group left to climb the steep rock-face that would take them to the summit for sunrise. Ebony said they had been informed at the start of the tour that if it started to rain, they wouldn’t be allowed to attempt the summit.
“We’d discussed the previous day about good and bad weather conditions in getting to the top and (the guide) had said if it starts to rain we would have to turn back,” she said. At about 4am Ebony said it started to spit rain and they thought about their guide’s warning. “We jokingly questioned whether the rain was too heavy to go on but our guide said it was only mist and cloud rain,” she said. Before reaching the summit and while climbing over steep rockface in rain that was steadily getting heavier, Ebony and part of her group decided to turn back. “We got to the stage where we were numb and cold from the wind and rain and after a huge gust of wind threw us off balance we knew we had to go back down,” she said. Ebony said she and one other female climber were left alone after their guide went on to find the rest of their group, and had to attempt a descent while fighting their way across waterfalls that had formed over the rock. “We held on to the rope for dear life as the rocks were wet and slippery, I really didn’t know how it
was going to turn out,” she said. “About half way across one of them we didn’t have any footing so both of us went over holding onto the rope.” Local search and rescue services were called to help get the climbers down the mountain safely but Ebony said it was lucky that no one was injured or killed. “That night I kept replaying in my head what could have happened on the mountain, it could have very easily gone wrong,” she said. “I’m angry about the fact that we were allowed to go up the mountain that morning, they should provide some sort of weather report in the
morning so you can make an informed decision about going up or not.” A spokesman from tour company Kumuka Worldwide, who organised the trek, said they would be investigating the incident. “(Ebony’s) disappointment that a guide had to go back down the mountain with other (hikers) had already
been forwarded to our ground operator in Borneo, but obviously Ms Jemmett wanted further action which we are committed to do,” he said. “Safety and security is a priority for us as a tour operator, and we endeavour to ensure our high standards are maintained across the globe.”

State View – Lisa Neville RELAY FOR LIFE The Relay for Life is being held on November 12 at the Collendina Recreation Reserve, starting at noon. This is a great event being held to raise funds for the Cancer Council to provide their services, including support and advice and working to reduce the impact that cancer has on our community. SHELL ROAD The campaign for funding for the Shell Road, Ocean Grove Sporting Precinct continues. As many of you would be aware, I tabled a petition in Parliament with over 1300 signatures calling on the state government to fund
this important project. We need to keep working together to put pressure on the government until we get a positive outcome for Ocean Grove sports clubs and community organisations.
VOLUNTEERS Bellarine residents who are CFA volunteers and members and served during the February 2009 bushfires in Victoria should nominate to receive a commemorative badge to acknowledge their enormous contribution. The commemorative badge is designed to be an important token of gratitude and appreciation from the CFA organisation and the wider community

Hi cheeky readers, With the weather getting better it’s great to see more of my furry four legged friends strutting around the Grove. My fave spots are the beach, the river and the paths heading towards Mainies. On the weekend I was cruising the beach near Hodgson Street when I met Cosmo. Cosmo is a one-eyed Chihuahua, and he is very cool. I thought I met a one-eyed cat once, but he was only walking backwards. Cosmo sent me a message on my Facebook “Hi Cheeky, l’m Cosmo, we met at the beach this morning, you know the little one-eyed dog. I’m a big fan of Oscar’s law to abolish
puppy mills. l have a spare red bandana which l want Oscar’s law on it. It would look really cool on you, struttin around town and sending a message.” Great message Cosmo, send the bandana in, I will def wear it. My human wears a bandana too. Don’t forget if you are looking at buying a puppy, try a breeder. You can find heaps online. I was found online. I come from Diamond Beach in NSW. Oh yeah, it’s my birthday on the 27th. I’ve already ordered pats, treats, a big bone, and a nice walk to Mainies. Anyways, don’t forget to send in your photos and visit me at facebook. com/cheeky.mobbs Cheeky out

I again acknowledge and commend the tremendous effort and sacrifice by so many Bellarine residents at this time when they went to the aid of their fellow Victorians in such extreme and challenging conditions. To nominate for the commemorative badge, CFA members involved in any aspect of the 2009 campaign should contact their brigade secretary or district office. Lisa Neville Member for Bellarine 5248 3462
Memorial concerns I NOTE that the Ocean Grove/Barwon Heads RSL has a new charter and are now located at Ocean Grove Bowls club. The interesting part for me was the statement by the CEO of the HQ RSL Melbourne, Colonel Annett, who said that the members of the new RSL will make a decision on what to do with the existing RSL Memorial Hall located in Barwon Heads (Ocean Grove Voice, October 5). The Barwon Heads RSL was, until just a few years ago, owned by the members. Just after WWII the people of Barwon Heads took
up a collection and some prominent, reasonably well off people bought the present hall/house as a memorial and to say thank you to those that made the ultimate sacrifice and those that were lucky enough to return to Barwon Heads. Just a few years ago the president of Barwon Head’s RSL, a Vietnam veteran who was foreign to the area talked the members into signing the deeds to the property over to the HQ RSL Melbourne. The now vacant property worth many hundreds of thousands of dollars should be given back to the people of Barwon Heads where it can remain a memorial. BOB THOMPSON OCEAN GROVE

READY FOR ACTION: Ever Fitness team’s Caide Robertson and Cameron Ward.
Team in training ONE of Ocean Grove’s Mega Swim’s teams is in solid training for the upcoming MS Australia fundraising event. Ocean Grove’s Cameron Ward is leading team Ever Fitness for the 24-hour event which will involve teams of up to 15 people swimming a relay of laps. The event raises money for MS Australia to fund financial help and scholarship programs for sufferers of Multiple Sclerosis. Personal trainer Cameron said this was the second year he had taken part in the event after swimming with a team in the Melbourne Mega Swim last year. “I think raising money
for charity is quite an achievement … when you get out of bed at 12am and you get in the water and before you know it its 1.30 in the morning it’s a great feeling,” he said. “If I can help raise some money for people just by throwing my arms around in the pool, it’s the least I can do.” During last year’s Mega Swim Cameron estimated he spent about seven hours swimming laps in the pool, covering about 8km. “Normally I do triathlons so it’s good training for me, I’m hoping to smash out 8km but if I could do more than that, that would be good,” he said. Cameron said the Mega
Swim was a fun event to take part in with teams cheering each other on despite swimming into the night and the early hours of the morning. “It does get a bit quiet in the 12 to 5am period, you get into zombie mode but when you hit the water you get a burst of energy and it is a good atmosphere,” he said. Team Ever Fitness has five members but Cameron said they were campaigning hard to gather another 10 swimmers who wanted to help make a difference in people’s lives. To join the Ever Fitness team phone 0413 359 672 or visit http://www. megaswim.com for details.
AFTER countless live gigs, hours of song writing and two years of hard work, Bree Arne Chamley’s first album is only days away from release. Release Me is a two-disc album that has been a labour of love for Bree who funded the project after receiving an MS Australia Go For Gold scholarship last year. “I’m really, really excited, my other two EPs are only five tracks and I’ve always wanted to record everything I’ve written,” Bree (pictured) said. With years of performing around Ocean Grove, Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula under her belt, the 25-year-old
said her time in the recording studio came easily as she knew exactly how she wanted her songs to sound on the album. “I’ve been playing these songs for years so I know how I wanted them to sound,” she said. “I’ve been able to record an album the way I wanted to without limitations.” The inspiration for the album’s title came from Bree feeling she was unable to move on with her career until her catalogue of songs was released. “They are (songs) I’ve already had, that’s why I named the album Release Me so after they’ve been released, I can move on musically,” she said. Release Me will be launched at the Ocean Grove Hotel on October 21 from 7:30pm with supporting artist Alister Turrill playing before a two-set performance from Bree. After her album’s release, the future is wide open for Bree’s music career with the possibility of a film clip on the horizon and the potential for a tour. “I’d like to be able to tour and see where it takes me and what doors open,” she said.

Woman hurt in crash OCEAN Grove police and ambulance were called to a car crash in Breamlea last week. Three Bellarine police vehicles attended the accident at 4.20pm on Friday evening after an 86-year-old St Leonards man collided with another car at the Blackrock Road, Bluestone School Road intersection. Acting Senior Sergeant David Magher said the other car was a Ford Territory carrying a 41-yearold Barwon Heads man. “The impact spun the Territory 180 degrees around and over a culvert and into a fenced off dam area on the south east corner of the intersection,” he said. The 41-year-old was uninjured while the elderly woman travelling

in the other car was taken to Geelong Hospital with some injuries. The 86-yearold male driver has been charged with failing to stop at a stop sign. Senior Sgt Magher said the intersection was a particularly notorious one
for accidents and Bellarine Police will be reporting it to VicRoads. “We’ve been called to accidents at that intersection before so we will report it to VicRoads and hopefully we’ll be able to get more signage up,” he said.

Alicia’s surgery which was to cost about $100,000. The surgery was a success and after three years of recuperation and more than $300,000 in medical bills, Alicia said she would not change a thing about the last four years. “I feel totally blessed, I look back now and I wouldn’t have changed a thing as I’ve learnt so much, met so many people and realised how blessed I am,” she said. The couple was over the moon to discover Alicia had fallen pregnant not long after being given the all clear from her specialists to start trying for a baby. “It took about a year to change the medication I’m on to make it safe and basically as soon as my neurologist said we could start trying, it must have happened then” she said. Alicia and Daniel, who up until last month ran the Blue Fin Cafe in Ocean Grove, said they had just come back from a muchneeded holiday when they discovered the news. “We had just come back from a holiday to Cairns and I felt different, I could
just feel that something was going on there so I thought I would take a pregnancy test,” Alicia said. “We weren’t expecting it to happen so quickly, everyone had said don’t get your hopes up, it will probably take over a year to get pregnant but it seems like first try and we did.” Alicia said her desire to have a baby had been her driving force through her illness and recovery, and she said she always knew being a mother was her lot in life. “I’ve always known I was put on this earth to be a mother, I’ve always just wanted to be a mum, that’s all I ever wanted in life,” she said. Alicia said after all the support Ocean Grovers gave her during her illness, many are now claiming the bub as the town’s own. “They say you’re not only having a baby for yourselves but it’s a baby for Ocean Grove,” she said. “I want to give one big thank you to the Ocean Grove community for all their support over the past five years and don’t worry, we’ll still be in the grove and we’ll be pushing a pram around.”

this information to conduct an investigation into the hoax call. The maximum penalty for someone who makes a false call to triple zero is five years imprisonment. Senior Sgt Magher said hoax phone calls were a rare
occurrence on the Bellarine Peninsula but any call had to be treated as the real thing and wasted valuable emergency resources. “It’s frustrating but it can’t be helped, we have to treat each call as if it was a real emergency,” he said.

relay for life Teams getting ready for big event TAKING THE CHALLENGE: Melanie and Anthony Traynor know first hand the value of events like Relay for Life.
Help change lives MELANIE and Anthony Traynor will participate in Bellarine’s Relay For Life knowing exactly how the event can help change lives. The Barwon Heads couple owns fitness company You Can Bootcamp and knows the impact cancer can have after Melanie battled breast cancer last year. “I completely understand how hard it is to get going, especially when you think all hope of being fit and healthy again appears lost,”
Melanie said. “The support I received from the Breast Cancer Network Australia and the Cancer Council was invaluable.” Anthony has taken up the extra challenge to run the entire 24 hours solo and is encouraging people to sponsor him and their team You Can Bootcamp. “Nothing can be as hard as fighting cancer, so running for 24 hours seems insignificant,” he said. “I watched my wife go
through so much pain, and I feel for every person who has had to live through that.” Melanie and Anthony are launching the spring/ summer You Can Bootcamp season on the Bellarine Peninsula by offering free fitness sessions in exchange for a donation for Relay for Life. Anthony said the free outdoor fitness sessions would run for four weeks until Saturday, November 5, with participants able
to pick one session a week from three different times available. Two sessions a week will run in Ocean Grove either at the beach at 14W or at Ocean Grove Park. “Participation will be by donation, no matter how small, with all money going to the Relay For Life Fundraising total,” Anthony said. For more details or to book your spot email info@youcanbootcamp. com.au
TEAM members are gearing up for Bellarine’s inaugural Relay for Life in November. The Australia-wide fundraiser for Cancer Council Australia will be held at the Collendina Recreation Reserve from midday on Saturday, November 12, until midday the following day. 15 teams have already signed up for the 24hour event in which team members run a continuous relay around the oval. Bellarine Relay for Life co-ordinator, Naomi Young said there would be plenty of live music at the event to entertain both young and old. “Chris Wilson will be playing there, The Rustys and Off The Hook as well as for the kids, Dazzling Dan the Magic Man,” she said. Geelong Zumba will also run a workshop to get everyone warmed up before their laps. Ocean Grovers can still register for the Bellarine Relay for Life, phone 1300 656 585 or visit http://www.relayforlife. org.au

Online listing launched THE Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre has launched an online business directory to further promote business cohesion in the region. The centre launched the directory, which will eventually become a hardcopy publication at last week’s Annual General Meeting. Creators Mike Griffiths and Nicki Dunne said they wanted to promote as many businesses, small and large, as possible in the community and take them to locals in an easy, concise way. Mike said he had been working on the project for more than 12 months. “It’s a passion of mine to get the whole community to get on board with the (directory),” he said. The directory has 58 listings so far and
is accessible from the Neighbourhood Centre’s website. With growth, the directory will move to an annual hardcopy version available in the new resident’s handbook. The centre’s committee of management had a shake up for 2011-2012 with outgoing president Michelle Giblett leaving the position which will be filled in the next committee meeting later this month. Michelle said she wanted to thank the committee for their support throughout the year. “This has been a new experience for me as president and I would not have been able to do this without their support,” she said. Michelle helped to announce the awarding of a life membership to volunteer receptionist

Barbara Dix who had been involved with the Centre for over 10 years. Barbara said she was humbled by the honor and thanked the centre in a statement read at the meeting. Manager Nicki said the centre has had such a
successful year thanks to the hard work of all the staff and volunteers who have helped implement new training programs and to grow the centre for the community. “We have had another extremely successful year
with the centre expanding in many ways,” Nicki said. “The centre’s success is due to the enthusiasm of the committee, staff and volunteers, their dedication and energy has been in many cases over and beyond the call of duty.”

Park future discussed A GROUP of about 20 locals turned out last week to discuss the future of Kingston Park. City of Greater Geelong representatives were on hand with Matthew Bolton from Thompson Berrill Landscape Design to discuss the future of Kingston Park. Residents had the opportunity to discuss values and issues of the 20-hectare park which incorporates an open space reserve, children’s playground and a fencedoff conservation area that houses the rare Bellarine yellow gum. Issues raised included bushfire concerns, the potential for the open space to be used as sporting fields, feral animal and mosquito control, and the need for updated public toilets. Information from the meeting, as well as feedback from a public survey mailed to residents, will be compiled by the City to help draft a Kingston Park Management Plan to help guide its future. adjacent to the park and said she was impressed with the meeting in allowing residents to have their input into the future of the park. “I thought the meeting was really well run, the overwhelming feeling from the people there was that it be left as a park with no formal infrastructure,” she said. “With the growth of Ocean Grove I hope the park will be retained as a passive, recreational space.” Inga said the formation of a management plan was important to recognise the value of the park and its importance to residents in Ocean Grove. “The majority of people there were pleased that the biodiversity has been recognised and maintained
and hope for it to be promoted and protected further for the future.” City of Greater Geelong Councillor Jan Farrell, who represents Ocean Grove, said the Kingston Park Management Plan was being developed following 12 months of informal discussions with residents. “Thanks to everyone who attended, we received some really great feedback and collected the kind of information that only locals know,” she said. “It’s very much a community-led project, we’ll be incorporating the community’s feedback into the plan, which will guide the use of Kingston Park well into the future.” Cr Farrell said council would continue to consult with residents and key user groups including Ocean Grove Rotary and Girl Guides. “We expect the draft management plan will go to Council early next year and then we’ll be coming back to the local community to check that we’ve got it right,” she said.
FAMILY AFFAIR: The Bentleys will run up the Eureka Tower.
Family hoping for Eureka moment THREE Bentley family members will climb Melbourne’s tallest building to raise money for those less fortunate. Steve Bentley and his two sons Jackson and Lukas will take part in the Eureka Climb on Sunday, November 13. Competitors will climb Melbourne’s Eureka Tower’s 1642 stairs over 88 levels in the annual race. Jackson, 19, has already run the event twice with dad Steve while Lukas will be undertaking his second race this year. Jackson was in the under 18s section last year. “I also placed the highest non-elite competitor which was ninth overall,” he said.
The fit family regularly competes in events like the Rip to River, Bells Bash and is taking part in this year’s Run Geelong. Steve said they enjoy stair climb competitions despite the challenging conditions. “It’s intense but that’s the challenge, you look at the top and you think wow I can get to the top in nine minutes,” he said. Winners will receive a trip to New York to take part in the Empire State Building Run-up competition. The event is raising money for Whitelion and Interplast. A day about culture OCEAN Grove Primary School’s students experienced all things Indonesian last week as part of Indonesia Day. The multicultural experience promotes Language other than English (LOTE) programs in the primary school through a full day of activities based around Indonesian culture. Grades three to six learn Indonesian throughout the year, however last week every class was able to experience a class with resident bahasa (language) teacher, Pak Yanto. The students were then treated to an Indonesian lunch as well as a performance by Bagus Kan, who gave a Pentawasik cultural performance comprising traditional dance lessons and shadow puppet performances.

are eager to run the 5km fun run after taking part in the school’s running club. “It’s a great day for parents and kids, some who have never run 5km put the pressure on their parents to run,” he said. “Every Wednesday we have a running club that sometimes as many as 86 students attend and we’ve made our purpose as training for Run Geelong. “It’s really satisfying to see kids as young as grade one and two enthusiastic about running.”

environment Watch out for weeds THE warm start to spring has promoted the growth and flowering of several prohibited weeds. Landholders in the region should be on the look-out for several weed species including two-leaf cape tulip, amsinckia and St Barnaby’s thistle. The species were considered a threat to the region’s agricultural and environmental assets and are highly invasive. For more information phone 136 186.
BE AWARE: Hooded plovers nest on the beach and face constant threats from people and animals.
Be aware of plovers ALONG south eastern Australian surf beaches endangered hooded plovers are leaving their winter flocks and pairing up for a new breeding season (September to April). Our local hoodie breeding habitat – the beach between Collendina and Point Lonsdale – has two regular breeding pairs. On average each pair attempts three nests per season, with two to three well-camouflaged eggs per nest. A simple nest scrape is
usually made on the upper beach, between the high tide line and the dune base. Egg incubation takes 28 days and if completed successfully the tiny fluffball chicks hatch out on surprisingly powerful legs. Adult hoodies don’t feed their young which must forage for sandhoppers proliferating in decomposing seaweed, and on low tide-exposed reefs. With sufficient undisturbed feeding time, growth is rapid and in just five weeks
they can fly. But before flight they are extremely vulnerable. During the past five breeding seasons, Birds Australia has monitored Collendina to Point Lonsdale. A combined total of about 75 eggs were laid, from which 14 chicks hatched, but only three chicks survived through to flight stage – one last season and two the previous year. Unleashed dogs, humans, feral and natural predators and high tide/swell are
constant threats. Both of our local hoodie pairs have already started new nests – and failed. A Point Lonsdale nest was recently abandoned due to excessive disturbance and a fox has destroyed a Collendina nest. Breeding will be attempted again soon. For more information on hooded plovers, or to find out how to help, visit www.myhoodie.com.au or phone 5258 4397. By JOHN MURRAY
Native plant day LOCALS interested in building their own native garden are invited to a community event run by Ocean Grove Coastcare and Barwon Coast. The Native Plants for your Garden event will be held at 7W in Collendina from 10am to midday on Sunday, October 30. The event will also help launch Barwon Coast’s educational brochure, Plants on the Run which helps residents identify and restore native vegetation in their garden as well as provides advice on how to replace non-indigenous plants with indigenous species. Free local native seedlings will be available as well as a barbecue lunch.

GRACEFUL: The white-necked heron is found in areas with shallow fresh water, including roadside ditches.
Heron puts on a show A FEW weeks ago when driving down the big dipper in Thacker Street, I looked up and saw a huge bird flying in the distance. I stopped the car, took a terrible photo, and when I got home and downloaded the images I realised that the bird was a large heron. My photo was so blurry that I couldn’t identify it properly. However a few
days ago I was driving in the same area when I noticed a large black and white bird next to a pond at the base of the big dipper. I stopped the car, did a naughty U-turn, and it flew away before I could get the camera out. But a miracle happened, it flew back to the dam and I managed to capture an image from a distance. It turns out that the heron
is in fact a white-necked heron, and it’s a beauty. I hope I didn’t scare it away as I haven’t seen it since. The white-necked heron (or Pacific heron) is a large heron with a white head and a long white neck with a double line of black spots running down the front. The upperparts of the body are black and the underparts are grey, streaked with
white. The bill is black, the face is blue or yellow, the eyes are green, and the legs and feet are black. The heron’s length is around 80-100cms. The white-necked Heron is found throughout mainland Australia, except for desert regions, inhabiting mainly fresh water wetlands. White-necked Herons
are found in shallow fresh waters, including farm dams, flooded pastures, and even roadside ditches. The birds search for food by wading in shallow water or stalking through wet grass. They feed on fish, amphibians, crustaceans and insects. By JENNIFER CARR

Market a roaring success LAST week’s Bellarine Beach Babes market was a fantastic success according to organisers. Kristin Williamson said the market hosted 24 stalls and helped raise $1200 for Ocean Grove Playgroup. “We were really pleased with how it went – there were lots of people through the door,” she said. “This was the first time we’ve held it and due to its success, we hope to do it again next year.” The money will go towards new toys and a Christmas party for the playgroup’s children.

Getting down and dirty DIRTY York is set to treat Piping Hot Chicken Shop groovers to their trio acoustic set on Saturday, October 29. The Melbourne band (pictured) will belt out their vintage style rock and roll at their first ever appearance at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop. Dirty York’s lead singer Shaun Brown said as a friend of Chicken Shop resident
musician, Sarah Carroll, he had heard it was the venue to play in Ocean Grove. “I used to come down and buy my chickens there but now I hear it’s the place to play music,” he said. Usually made up of six members, the Dirty York Trio is a three person acoustic performance with Shaun’s whiskey soaked vocals and two guitarists for a
mellower sound. However, even with an acoustic set, be expected for Dirty York’s traditional highoctane performance which retains the hookladen blues rock that fans are used to. The independent band has featured on Triple J Unearthed and was described as one of the hardest working bands in the Australian music industry. “Dirty York have

Make sure to turn up at the Chicken Shop on October 29 by 8pm as the space is sure to fill up quickly. Fans can expect songs from Dirty York’s 2009 album Waiting on St George as well as last year’s Say Goodbye to Diamonds.
The 2011 album draws on diverse contemporary influences while remaining true to those old-school southern rock and blues aesthetics that have withstood the test of time. There will be something for everyone with riff heavy, oldschool rock guitar sound as well as chilled out acoustic ballads. Expect the Chicken Shop to rock.

Women founder Sarah Valentine said the meetings were run in a social atmosphere perfect for meeting like-minded businesswomen. “Women do business with people they like, if you can create an environment where they can meet like minded women who they connect with, then business will naturally flow,” she said.
“The meetings have a social feel with shared food and a glass or two of champagne (and) allow everyone to celebrate each other’s successes and challenges are workshopped.” Maree Mohr from Ocean Grove Costume Hire said she was a proud member of the group and enjoyed meeting women similar to herself.
“I have met some wonderful women who celebrate the accomplishments of each other’s success,” she said. “In addition to that, we are each other’s clients and offer advice on how to make our businesses thrive, it is refreshing and a great feeling to belong to a group with such like-minded women.”

NEW RECRUIT: Liam Rock has returned to the Grubbers after spending the past season overseas and previous two seasons in the Geelong Football League.
He’s ready to Rock THE Rock is back at the Grubbers. New Grubber recruit Liam Rock can’t wait to put his football boots back on at Ocean Grove in 2012. 26-year-old Rock returns to the Grubbers after spending the 2011 season overseas and also playing at Geelong West St Peters in the Geelong Football League in 2009 and 2010. The accomplished onballer played in Ocean Grove’s last senior
premiership in 2003 as a talented 18-year-old. “I’m jumping out of my skin to train and play after returning from overseas,” Rock told the Voice last week. “I didn’t think I would miss playing and being involved in local footy as much as I did. “While I was overseas, I was always checking the online results and the teams when they came out on Thursday nights.”
Rock, who recently took up a role as a real estate agent at CJ Keane in St Leonards, has a strong pedigree and was a dual runner-up in the Geelong West St Peters Football Club’s senior best and fairest in 2009 and 2010. Ocean Grove-raised Rock, a former landscaper, played his junior football in the local area before becoming a regular senior Grubber in 2003. Rock, an accomplished
rover and prolific ball type getter, is expected to form a big part of Ocean Grove’s midfield drive in 2012. He said his GFL experiences had served him well and had given him the taste to be a leader at the Grubbers next season. “The difference is the GFL is quicker with speed and intensity than BFL – both leagues have a good skill level though,” he said. “I was in the leadership group at Geelong West –
That would be the aim to be leader at Ocean Grove in 2012 and be a part of the leadership group,” Rock said. “I want to come back to Ocean Grove and win another premiership.” Rock, who won the best on ground honour during the Grubbers’ last premiership year in 2003, has also played with the Broadbeach Cats in the North Eastern Australian Football League in Queensland.

Cobras on fire early COLLENDINA B-Grade captain Leigh Keast blitzed his way to an enormous innings of 197 against Barrabool on Saturday in round two of the Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association. Keast, 34, who works at the Voice and bats at No. 4, came to the wicket when Collendina’s score was 2/79 on day one of the two-day fixture. The Cobras B-Grade went on to compile 7/351 from their 75 overs. Meanwhile in the round two A-Grade fixture between Collendina and Barrabool, at Barrabool, the Cobras made 7/130 from their 66 overs after Barrabool won the toss and elected to bowl in the two-day fixture. Brett Gasper, a former Alexander Thompson player, top scored with 38 while Corey Walter (26) and Kade Norquay (23) also made valuable starts. In round one, Collendina overcame nearby rival Wallington to cruise to an eight-wicket win. Wallington won the toss

The Cobras A-Grade team who finished in a lowly 10th position last season, struck the early blow to have the Wallabies on the back foot at 3/27 courtesy of two brilliant outs in the field by Nathan Walter. Brett Gasper (3/19 off eight overs) was the leading wicket taker for the Cobras in Wallington’s modest tally of 9/108. In reply, the Cobras never looked troubled and compiled 2/115 from their 36 overs. Collendina co-coach Eddie Ellwood (29), Corey Walter (29 not out) and Kade Norquay (29 not out) all made valuable contributions with the bat. New Collendina captain Jye Hearps was impressed with his team’s first-up win. “Great to start the season with a win, the more early wins we can get the better,” Hearps said.

The Grubbers needed to bowl Anglesea out to claim an unlikely victory inside 33 overs but were unable to do so in the rain shortened game. Surfer on the rise By MARK HEENAN OCEAN Grove local Josh Johnson-Baxter is a young surfer on the rise, having mixed with the world’s best. Earlier this month, the 22-yearold was a runner-up at the Victoria Open series at Bells Beach. Cape Patterson’s Steve Noble took out the four-man final to overcome JohnsonBaxter and Caiden Fowler (third), and Jan Juc’s Lincoln Eather who finished fourth. “I haven’t done competition in a while, so it was good just to mix it up with the other competitors,” Baxter told the Voice last week. “It was good waves until the final where it was lack lusture. “It was a four-man final, there were waves all day then the final went flat literally with waves – two surfable waves came through the whole heat. He (Noble) just got the better exchange.” The tall youngster who stands at 189cm, flew to America and Mexico this week to embark on a two-month surfing holiday to escape the current spring chillness of the Bellarine Peninsula. “It’s a holiday more than anything, but I am going to America and Mexico to go surfing,” he said.
Johnson-Baxter’s tall and slim body shape is similar to current World No.2 surfer and Australian Owen Wright. “My favourite surfer used to be Joel Parkinson, but Owen is going pretty well at the moment,” Baxter said. “I used to surf against Owen Wright when I was younger, it is good to see him winning. Owen is about the same build as me.” Johnson-Baxter has competed at various ASP World Tour qualifying events including The Burleigh Breaka Pro on the Gold Coast and the Rip Curl Pro trials at Bells Beach. He finished second to Portland’s Adam Robertson at the 2010 Rip Curl Pro trials. Robertson was a runner-up of the main Rip Curl Pro event in 2009 losing to eventual winner Joel Parkinson. Johnson-Baxter, a natural footer, said it would be a dream to earn a wildcard berth at the main Rip Curl Pro at the Bells Beach and compete on the ASP World Tour. “It’s still a dream, but you have got to pull all the pieces together to make it work,” he said. Johnson-Baxter’s local favourite spot is the Beacon surf break at Thirteenth Beach and he is part of the Thirteenth Beach Boardriders Club.
