STATE VOTES: Neville stays, Crutchfield goes OCEAN Grove and the Bellarine remain Labor but as the Voice went to press Ted Baillieu was set to claim victory and will form the State’s first Coalition government in 11 years. If as looks likely the Coalition will form the next government, Ocean Grove resident Leanne Eaton thought she was getting scammed when she was told she had won a new car through an Amcal Pharmacy competition., writes Carly Helweg. The 50 year old used her Amcal Rewards card at the Ocean Grove Pharmacy located in The Terrace during the month of September and went into the draw to win a Mazda3 Maxx.

The competition was drawn at the end of October and Leanne was informed of her win by phone only to tell the Amcal representative to give her their phone number so she could call them back. “I kept saying oh my god, oh my god I don’t believe it so I asked for their name and number to call them back because there are so many scams these days,” Leanne said. “It only felt real when she said it was for Amcal and I thought ‘oh yeah I shop there’. (The competition) didn’t even occur to me when I shopped there, I didn’t even realise I could win a car.” Leanne beat 1.7 million other Amcal loyalty members from all over Australia to win the $25,000 prize. Her win was made even more special as she had just sold her 20 year old Corolla as scrap metal for $100 only six weeks previously and hadn’t yet replaced it. “It couldn’t have been better timing,” she said. Ocean Grove Pharmacist Iain Cartney said he was glad to offer not only good health advice to the community but give them the opportunity to win competitions like this one through Amcal. “We are very excited to have one of our regular customers win this fantastic car simply by shopping at our pharmacy,” he said.

then Nationals leader Peter Ryan will be deputy premier. The Greens have blamed the Coalition's mid-campaign decision to direct preferences to Labor ahead of the minor party for their failure to win any seats in the lower house.

Mr Brumby ascribed the anti-Labor swing to a build-up of voter resentment over the government's three terms in office. His Labor predecessor, Steve Bracks, who had been in Ocean Grove campaigning with Lisa Neville in the run up to the

vote, said the Liberals had turned the election into “a referendum on the Labor government”. Across the bridge voters punished Michael Crutchield, voting in Liberal Andrew Katos for South Barwon.

NOT JUST THE MEDICINE

Shell Rd plans up in the air

THE outcome of the State Election has left hopes of a breakthrough in the Ocean Grove Sports Plan - which hinges on a commitment from the State Government to match a Federal Government pledge – up in the air. Lisa Neville had promised a reelected Brumby Government would contribute $5million to the project. With no commitment as yet from the Coalition, its campaigners will have to work to woo the incoming administration. Story page 7

VicRoads postponed the official opening of the Barwon Heads Bridge on November 20 but that didn’t stop local protesters from attending the site. The group is disappointed with the lack of consultation the community has had during the bridge decision process as well as the pedestrian bridge naming competition. VicRoads South Western Regional Director, Robin Miles said the ceremony was postponed until 2011 to allow more time to find a name for the pedestrian bridge. Owner of the Ocean Grove’s Piping Hot Chicken Shop John Bowman said they understood the bridge has already been built but were still protesting the lack of consultation with the community.

THERE were far more interesting things than voting going on at the primary school on election day. As part of the Leaders for Geelong program, the peoplemap research group swooped on the queue to invite local residents to comment on their community. Ocean Grovers Jon Mamonski and Stephanie Asher are part of the sixstrong peoplemap group, which also includes Hisham Elkadi, Melissa Stephens, Jenny Gretgrix and David Holroyd. “Our project aims to give the community a voice and we do that by broadcasting people’s responses to questions about where they

live”, said David. “We interviewed around 50 people aged from eighteen to eighty plus. “The ultimate objective is to map how people identify with where they live, how connected they feel and how much impact they think they have on that place. On the one hand, the range of responses is fascinating, but equally there are common themes that come through really strongly.” The peoplemap team were struck by “what lovely people” live in Ocean Grove and observed that the beach and lifestyle are the standout themes for the best thing about living here. Melissa

noted that while a lot of people struggled with the question of how they could make the place even better, many people would like to be more involved in the community but can’t find the time. “Another common response was that people are involved with kids’ activities but feel they should be doing more for the older citizens,” she said. Hisham explained that the team is in the early stages of creating a strategic process to generate a positive community-led vision. Jenny summed up with the words, “peoplemap is about broadcasting the ‘moment in time’ identity of a place.”

OCEAN Grove market season is picking up now with this Sunday’s event virtually sold out of pitches. The market which is held at Kingston Park, off Adco Grove, from 9am to 1pm, will also enjoy a number of new participants. Among them will be Ocean Grove Men’s Shed and Geelong Animal Welfare. Rotarians will be collecting at the car park entrance for the Moolap based animal charity. After this market on December 4, the next will take place on January 2, Feb 6, March 6 and April 3. There is no Easter Monday market next year, as this coincides with Anzac Day.

Grove family moving to Malawi An Ocean Grove family is making the ultimate volunteer commitment and moving to Malawi in south-eastern Africa, writes Carly Helweg. The Johnstone family are picking up their lives to spend four years at Kande Village on the edge of Lake Nyasa. The family will be living and working closely with family friend Robyn Casey who started the Mphatso Children’s Foundation in 2006. Mphatso helps to feed over 1000 local children through 10 nursery schools, giving a meal to many children who can’t get one at home. Mark and Lena Johnstone said they knew they wanted to move there from the moment they first visited the country. “When Mark first went to Malawi in 2007, he came back saying I could live there and I went the year after and I came

back and said the same thing,” Lena said. After taking their children Jack, 12 and Beth, 11 over for a visit they were encouraged by the fact the kids loved being there and then they knew they could make the extended commitment. The children will leave Surfside Primary School and will

be taught by Lena via distance education due to the lack of adequate schooling available in Malawi. “They’re relying on unqualified volunteers at most of the schools, we’re talking over 100 kids in a class for one teacher, it’s more about crowd control than a learning environment,” Robyn

said. An average day is arguably never average in Kande, however the Johnstone’s will usually rise about 5am in their simple open plan, dirt floor house. The kids will have schooling with Lena from 7am until 1pm to fit in with local class times and everyone will be helping out with the porridge program helping feed local children in the nursery schools. As a qualified electrician, Mark also wants to spend time teaching locals trade techniques to help them be self-sufficient. The family have had great support from their family and friends but said they will miss Ocean Grove and the people they leave behind. “It’s a really lovely place to bring up kids here and they’re been blessed with really good friends and spoilt, the lifestyle down here,” said Mark.

Ready to ride THE pedal power of at least three enthusiastic Ocean Grove locals will descend upon the Victorian central and north eastern high country roads this week. Father Sean Clark and his son Lincoln, 11, and fellow local rider Crockett Cooke, will participate in this week’s RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride. The 2010 state-wide event began on Saturday November 27 in Yarrawonga, but Sean and Lincoln head to Seymour tomorrow before their three-day 185 kilometre Goulburn River Explorer journey starts on Friday. The Goulburn River Explorer section begins in Seymour and finishes in Marysville. “I did the (Great Victorian Bike

Ride) 20 years ago when I finished high school,” Sean said. “When the bike ride was on last year, Lincoln got the bug and decided he wanted to do it this year and so he saved his deposit and we are doing the Goulburn River Explorer which is a threeday ride not the full nine days.” Meanwhile, Crockett Cooke is going the full distance from Yarrawonga to Marysville. Crockett, who suffers from motor neurone disease, rode in last year’s tour and has been a keen bike rider and now a trike rider for more than two decades.

Motor neurone disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder that affects nerves in the upper or lower parts of the body. Crockett, a previous owner operator of the old Bellarine Sports store in The Terrace between 1987 and 1989, rode bikes with his sister from Ocean Grove to Adelaide in 1983. The 49-year-old will compete in this week’s event on a trike. “I have been into bikes for a long time, now I’m really not into bikes as I’m into trikes,” Crockett said. More than 5000 people are expected to participate in this year’s Great Victorian Bike Ride. To donate to Crockett’s ride visit; http://www.everydayhero.com.au/ crockett_cooke.

Alison makes Arts cut AS the daughter of Ocean Grove’s resident music teacher, Alison Fane has an orchestra of musical instruments at her disposal. It’s no wonder the year eight Bellarine Secondary College student has been accepted to the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (VCASS) to continue her secondary education next year. Alison is one of ten selected out of a group of 200 who auditioned for a chance to study at the school from year nine until year 12. The talented musician said she knew from the

moment she attended this year’s open day at VCASS she was destined to attend the school. “I was in tears when I walked through the place because it was awesome.

We didn’t decide to audition, we already knew we would,” she said. As a percussionist, Alison’s speciality is drums and she spends about two hours a day practising with music sometimes taking preference over other homework. “I love it more than school work,” she said. The 15 year old has only been playing the drums for four years and under the instruction of her father and teacher Russell Fane from Ocean Grove Music School, wowed the panel at her audition. “After Alison’s audition, one of the adjudicators commented that he couldn’t believe she had

only been learning the drums for four years,” Russell said. “She’s naturally gifted and if she progresses the way she (has), she’s going to blow them away.” VCASS helps to nurture talented music and dance students by preparing them for a future in their artistic careers whilst providing an academic education. The secondary school then feeds into the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts and gives students like Alison the chance to dream big for their futures. “My dream is to be a percussionist for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra,” she said.

Park champion I MOVED to Ocean Grove from Geelong following my marriage in 1967. My family, the Grinters, were well known settlers in the Moolap/Whittington area. I attended East Geelong Primary and Geelong High School. My father was an MC for local functions, weddings etc so we had a very social life and were brought up on the dance floor – I still love dancing and music. Upon moving to Ocean Grove, my life became even more social as my husband Graeme is the second of ten children! Life in Ocean Grove has always been busy and interesting, we were always surrounded by a big family gathering at every occasion. My early memories of Ocean Grove were camping in ‘The Spit’ every summer in the 1940’s and 50’s with family and cousins from Geelong. Later Mum rented a house in Orton Street opposite the Ocean Grove outdoor theatre. That house is still there. Going up for a lime spider at ‘Do Duck Inn’ in the

main street was always a highlight for me. At that time it was the only milk bar in Ocean Grove. I did my apprenticeship as a hairdresser at Rixon’s in Geelong and ran my

own salon for six years. Clients came weekly to have their hair set and became real friends. That’s why I can still work and talk at the same time, which Graeme thinks is a real art. I met Graeme at Ocean Grove main beach when I was in my late teens. He was the current surf life saving champion and that was quite an attraction. Graeme went to work in Northern Territory and I went on a working holiday in New Zealand and travelling the South Pacific and Australia’s east coast for several years before settling down by the coast. I still love the beach and we have just returned from a wonderful holiday in Hawaii with our kids and grandchildren to celebrate our 70th birthdays. Over the past 35 years in Ocean Grove I have been involved with the OG Fire Brigade, OG Nature Reserve and the Geelong

Field Naturalists club. I started playing tennis at the tender age of 36! More recently I have been involved with Trading Partners Fair Trade in Geelong, delivering Meals on Wheels, Pt Lonsdale Op Shop, Oxfam Ocean Grove and U3A Music. I have been active over the past 14 years fundraising for the Ocean Grove Park organising luncheons, fashion parades, golf days and 24 car boot sales (and counting) plus assisting with the Tranquility Fair. I enjoy working with local people on these events and it has been so rewarding to see Ocean Grove Park being enjoyed by the community, especially the children. I am always ‘busy’, even if it’s talking on the phone or going out with friends to the movies, for coffee or lunch. It is my grandchildren that are my biggest interest now, as Anouk

and Ines are always calling in. I love to take an interest in what they are doing and now with the addition of our little Archie we are back to the playgrounds again. We feel very lucky that our children (Inga and Adam) (Mat and Pip) have chosen to live in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads with their families. We have been fortunate to travel to many wonderful places but always love to return to Ocean Grove. We love looking at the ever-changing river from our house and watching so many people enjoying this beautiful natural asset we have in Ocean Grove. My favourite shop in Ocean Grove is the Lolly shop! I must try a lime spider again one of these days. I have always believed you get out of life what you put into it, and I have had indeed, a happy life in this lovely town.

Down but not out: Richard Grimmett and fellow picnic organisers had to postpone Ocean Grove’s Picnic in the Park due to poor weather predictions.

prepared for a sunny day picnic in the future. “ The pin was pulled on the picnic on Friday with heavy rain and high winds predicted in the afternoon.

Richard said that safety had to be the first priority as well as a likely low attendance. “Not a day for a picnic,” he said. The free picnic day was

to be hosted by the Ocean Grove Community Enterprise, the Ocean Grove Community Association and the Ocean Grove Business Association, kindly

supported by key partners Rotary and the Ocean Grove Park. Watch future editions of the Voice for updates on the rescheduled showcase picnic.

OCEAN Grove’s inaugural Picnic in the Park had to be postponed on Saturday after rain threatened to wash out the celebrations. However, the organisers and those booked up to take part in the planned community showcase, hope to reschedule the event for the new year, perhaps in late March or April. A disappointed but not disheartened co-ordinator Richard Grimmett said: “We had up to 20 groups attending. The enthusiasm was there from those groups taking part but we don’t think the public would have attended in poor weather conditions. That was the aim, to showcase the community. “The groups themselves would have mixed but that is not enough.” “I know that many people have gone to a lot of work to prepare for the picnic and the enthusiasm has been fantastic. Let’s hold onto that enthusiasm and all of the material and the displays that have been

Off their trolley

Dear Editor What a mistake Safeway has made removing the coin locks on their shopping trolleys! No longer do we have a tidy and safe car park where shoppers are happy to put their trolleys back in their allotted bays and collect their $1 coin before driving off knowing their small effort makes their shopping centre a safe and tidy one. Have a look at the town centre car park where at any given time you will

find loose trolleys up against parked vechicles, or in the adjacent streets. Also go and look on Sunday morning at the town carpark and just count the trolleys that are everywhere. Maybe the management of both Coles and Safeway need to re-think the trolley problem and provide some more bays where people who do like to return their trolley can do so, and maybe both companies could agree to put coin locks back on

their respective trolleys and so make people responsible again and our shopping carparks tidy and safe. Remember it does not cost you, you get your money back, and if you ask Safeway they will even give you a free token to use in their trolleys. Let’s rethink this issue, it won’t be long and our holiday makers will be here and the car parks will be busier than ever. Beverley O’Meara. Ocean Grove.

I have not 30 mins ago had to break a window of a car to rescue a baby trapped inside for only a few minutes. Observing UNICEF work in East Timor AN Ocean Grove woman has just returned from observing crucial health care work in East Timor. Karen Mamonski applied for a position as a representative for ‘Vicks Road to Relief ’ program through her job as a pharmacy assistant. Karen was one of two Australian Pharmacy Ambassadors chosen to travel to East Timor for six days to observe UNICEF’s immunisation work and bring their stories back to pharmacies in Australia.

Karen Mamonski in East Timor.

With a team of UNICEF workers, Karen visited hospitals and clinics in urban and

rural settings to observe the immunisation program. “It really was an amazing

experience, particularly travelling up into the mountains to remote villages, the people were just so beautiful” Karen said. Karen said they were able to observe the difficulties a program like this encounters such as access, communication and education. “One of the biggest challenges is keeping the vaccines refrigerated in a tropical climate where electricity supply is unreliable or non-existent,” she said. ‘Vicks Road to Relief ’ donates money from every Vicks item sold to UNICEF’s immunisation program, particularly to prevent childhood measles.

Grove sports plan on the brink THERE is a light at the end of the tunnel for the Shell Road sporting complex. However, the result of Saturday’s State Election result may have dimmed it slightly. Member for Bellarine, Lisa Neville had announced $5 million towards the sporting complex project if the Brumby Government was reelected on November 27. But despite Lisa’s almost certain re-election (as it stood on Sunday), Brumby’s status as the premier and Labor’s right to govern looked unlikely. The state government’s contribution would add to the $2 million previously pledged by MP Darren Cheeseman in July and would cover the majority of the budget for the project. Unlike the Federal Government election, the Liberals or the Coalition have not, as yet, pledged to match Labor’s committment.

In announcing the funding Ms Neville said that the project will give Ocean Grove state of the art facilities and contribute to the Shell Road sporting precinct begun with the installation of the Bellarine Aquatic Centre in 2008. “Labor will provide up to $5 million towards the Shell Road Sporting Precinct, which will be home to cricket, football, soccer and netball, providing new club facilities, ovals and pitches,” she said. Ms Neville said that if she is elected, works could begin as soon as the funding became available and the appropriate applications were submitted. “This will be top priority, hopefully it will go through in the first budget,” she said. A long time advocate of the project, City of Greater Geelong Councillor Jan Farrell said she was delighted by the

Ocean Grove Football Netball Club president Geoff Cunningham handballs to Lisa Neville following the announcement that a re-elected Brumby Government would stump up $5m of the $8.5m needed to complete the Ocean Grove Sports Complex plan. funding announcement. “Five years ago Council partnered with the state government to develop a master plan for Shell Road and since then we have been working together to deliver two major projects,” Cr Farrell said. President of the Ocean Grove Football and Netball Club Geoff

Cunningham was on hand to celebrate the announcement and thank Ms Neville in person for the commitment. “It’s fantastic news for the football and netball clubs, we’ve been talking about this for a long time,” he said. President of the Ocean Grove Cricket Club, Lucas Baulch said that

he was surprised by the announcement and the amount of money that was pledged. The announcement should have ensured the delivery of the second part of that master plan but a change of government would require a fresh set of lobbying by the local sports clubs and City of Greater Geelong.

Geelong Swimming Club is well and truly equipped after being awarded over $3,000 in grants as part of the Telstra Assistance Fund. The Swimming Club received a shade marquee and swim results board that will be used at training sessions and event meets throughout the upcoming season. Club Vice President, Lisa Rush said she was delighted to receive the equipment grant, which will benefit the whole club. “It’s fantastic to have the support of Telstra and see them making such a positive difference in our community,” Lisa said. “The equipment will come in very handy over the summer months. Ocean Grove Community Garden

A community garden for Ocean Grove has been raised in small circles in the community over recent years. An emerging group of keen gardeners have had discussions throughout this year to try to work out the best place for a community garden. Suggestions at this stage for garden space are the block behind the Ocean Grove Senior Citizens Centre. The processes of informal discussions with COGG and OGSCA have commenced. Community gardens are a quiet, family-oriented meeting area where people come together to grow healthy food and socialise. There are community gardens in Barwon Heads, Point Lonsdale, Portarlington, Torquay, Anglesea and a few in Geelong, with the Geelong West Community Garden having been operating for over 20 years. We are keen to hear your thoughts, feelings or ideas about having a community garden in Ocean Grove. Please feel free to contact Peter Gumley at peter.gumley@ bigpond.com.au to talk about your ideas or involvement within this project. The Community Garden group will be holding a meeting where we can tell you what’s been going on and you can give us your opinions or advice about building a garden. Date for this meeting will be advised in the near future. For now we would like interested community members to check out our booth on the 27th November at the Picnic in the Park. We welcome anything you have to say and want to include you in what’s going on.

PREPARE FOR THE PARSONS PROJECT THIS Friday the Adam Parsons’ Project will bring A Night of Pink Floyd Classics including Dark Side of the Moon to the Ocean Grove Hotel. A shared passion between four guys hatched the biggest thing seen at The Ocean Grove Hotel Saturday Night Live in all of 2010... The Adam Parsons’ Project appeared mid-year and people literally spilled outside on the cold winters night trying to

get a peek at the show. Fans were treated to an elaborate light show, smoke machine effects, as well as listening to the complete "Dark Side Of The Moon" repertoire along with other Pink Floyd favorites. The boys have expanded their list to include another full set that includes some more obscure numbers that Floyd fans will enjoy. The evening will be kicked off by local

Baartzy's Brew are playing at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop on Friday December 10. Baartzy's Brew is a rare sighting between Australian jazz /blues legend Jim Kelly, Hammond player Tim Neal, alto saxophonist Martha Baartz and joining them for this tour drummer Hugh Harvey. The calibre of soul/jazz that these guys play is of international standard, just as their collective accolades suggest. Martha, a graduate of all things Jazz International , continues to push forward her path into a repertoire that both challenges and explains, as will become evident when you hear her play. Jim needs no introduction to those that know their Australian music, founding

member of seminal jazz fusion group 'Crossfire', countless movie scores, recording sessions and bands Lord Jim is one national treasure . Drummer Hugh Harvey is highly in demand on both the Victorian national and international music scenes', to be found in at least one or two bands at each festival worldwide... Tim has played with people who have played with Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderly, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Diana Ross and John at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop. Look forward to an assault on the senses, a cleansing of the palette as it were, a musical menu rife with texture....

Michael O’Hanlon has joined the Ocean Grove Hotel as the new chef. After being a customer there for a few years and recognising its untapped potential Michael felt he had something to contribute and joined the team at the hotel. His focus, in conjunction with the venue manager Michael Mathieson, is to continue to grow their reputation in the local community as a friendly venue with lots on offer. The hotel, still affectionately known as the Collendina by many locals, has two separate areas - a bar with live music on Saturdays, and a huge bistro with a

large outdoor kid’s area complete with trampolines. The bar now offers snacks and quick meals, adding to the traditional fare that has always been offered. The bistro offers a more family centred focus, that will become even more apparent after the Christmas season finishes with some new ideas coming soon. Already the hotel has had plenty of bookings for kid’s birthday parties on the weekends and parents love the environment that lets them relax and eat whilst the kids take care of themselves. The focus will be more on outdoor dining experiences as the

management continue to invest in upgrading the hotel’s facilities. Michael says “We will also be running more themed food nights to in conjunction with the shows that have been happening once a month on Fridays in the bistro; steak and seafood nights, maybe even a buffet.” Michael started his career more than 20 years ago in the very first Nando’s in Australia situated in Western Australia. He discovered a passion and talent for cooking and moved to the Gold Coast to further his career. He started in a big RSL kitchen and then transferred his apprenticeship to a five star hotel; several other similar hotels followed while completing

SUMMERY his apprenticeship. He found this to be extremely helpful due to the diversity of chef’s and menus that he experienced. He then accepted a position within the Hamilton Island Enterprise Group as a qualified chef, and after 4 years was the head chef of Outrigger Restaurant which was recognised as Hamilton Island’s premier restaurant. Ocean Grove has been home to Michael and his family (wife Penny, Maddison, 5 and Molly, 2) for nearly 4 years. “We love the lifestyle, and the community with all the facilities Ocean Grove has to offer. Our eldest daughter Maddison goes to Surfside Primary school. Penny introduced

me to Ocean Grove through her holidaying here for 20 odd years, where her family stayed at the Collendina Caravan Park. I met her in Queensland on Hamilton Island, where we both worked and lived for several years. The old story “love at first sight” (on my part), but she took some persuading” says Michael. After leaving the island they came to Victoria to meet Penny’s family for Christmas, travelled Australia for a while, and then settled in Ocean Grove with their daughter Maddison, waiting for Molly to arrive. After settling in Ocean Grove Michael became the executive chef at St. Leonard’s Hotel which featured an

exclusive seafood restaurant as well as the bistro. During this time he competed in the Surfcoast Culinary Shield against many talented chefs and won the Shield in 2009. In taking over menu development at the Ocean Grove Hotel Michael’s focus was to create a well balanced pub and bistro menu that not only was appreciated for its range but also for being great value for money. Michaels says “So it’s hard to focus on one single dish, our parmas are awesome, steaks tender and pizzas great. Over the summer I’ll be putting additional focus on lighter meals, particularly salads and snacks as well as fresh seafood.” Away from work

Michael and Penny enjoy the time alone after the kids are in bed, having a chat and reflecting on their day’s activities. “A beer and a few wines help us relax even more.” Pottering around the house with the kids in tow, asking him every question under the sun is strangely relaxing as well and it takes his mind off the pressures of creating menus and dealing with hot kitchens for a while. Fishing is one of the many outdoor activities he enjoys; “I find it relaxing to toss a line in off the beach and hope something bites. One of my long term hobbies is to restore a boat I’ve had in the shed for a year, I’m sure I’ll get around to it soon. Ha Ha Ha!”

Twilight Christmas Shopping FRIDAY 10TH DECEMBER 5-8PM

A TOWN FULL OF TREASURES Family fun at Twilight Shopping OCEAN Grove will have a weekend of early Christmas celebrations starting with the annual Twilight Shopping night. Stores in The Terrace will treat locals to extra shopping hours staying open from 5pm until 8pm on Friday December 10. Most retail shops are taking part and will have discounts and street stalls to entice shoppers.

A gift wrapping stall will provide a free wrapping service and a Lion’s Club barbeque will keep everyone’s hunger at bay over dinnertime. Shoppers can pick up some early Christmas presents whilst kids can visit the face-painting, balloon artist and pin the nose on Rudolph stalls. Santa will also make a special guest appearance at 6pm.

Shelley Keast from Beachside Blooms said while last year’s event was fantastic, this year’s should be even better. “This year will be better because the whole weekend will be an Ocean Grove Christmas Festival,” she said. Twilight shopping will kick off a busy weekend in Ocean Grove with Carols in the Park on Sunday December 12 at 7:30pm.

DESPITE the wet and chilly weather, Queenscliff Music Festival still partied through the rain, hosting one of its best line ups yet. Thousands of people packed the main Lighthouse Stage to see some of Australia’s premier musicians including Little Red, Ash Grunwald, Kate Miller-Heidke and The Vasco Era perform. The only hiccup was a last minute cancellation of ARIA award winner Washington due to illness but all was forgiven when Clare Bowditch and The New Slang took the stage in replacement. Local acts featured heavily in the line-up with up-and-coming newbies holding their own next to classic acts from Ocean Grove. The Local Music Showcase held in ‘The Shed’ was a platform for acts from the Bellarine Peninsula, Geelong and the Surfcoast to strut their stuff with QMF

Catherine Sanzon and Rustys.

staple, Stephen McEwan playing host. Despite Steve insisting there was no requirement to be one of his students to play in the set, his role as a VET music teacher at Bellarine Secondary College meant his talented students featured heavily. One of Stephen’s protégés, 17 year old Catherine Sanzaro wowed the crowd at her first QMF appearance living up to her reputation as a little girl with a big voice. The Ocean Grove local attracted a big crowd of fans including her ex-Sweethearts bandmates who cheered her on during two songs played with fellow locals, The Rustys. “We met at the start of the year at school and it’s really great to play with them. They’re

really really good.” Catherine said. The Rustys were back to play their second QMF, but this time popping up four times around the festival including on the popular Blues Train. With the fans following them around, it’s safe to say their Facebook campaign inviting over 600 friends along to their gigs was successful. One of the most popular acts over the weekend was a live recording over the popular SBS television quiz show, RocKwiz on Saturday afternoon. Music aficionados and hosts Julia Zemiro and Brian Nankervis gave a hilarious show full of music trivia, live performances and plenty of audience participation. The show even took a local spin by including the question, “Which town would I be in if I were at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop?” John Bowman, I hope you were listening…

“I was stunned but thrilled when I heard my name announced - there were so many deserving people nominated. It was a very exciting moment” Megan continued, “I am delighted that the valuable work we do and the care that we provide for all our residents has been recognised and rewarded at this level by the selection panel from Deakin University and Health Super. I am so proud of my team not only for their dedication and attention to detail with the project but the fact that it has generated positive and sustainable change for our residents and their families.” TLC Aged Care owners Dr John Leaper and Mrs Jenny Leaper were at the presentation evening to support and congratulate Megan. “Winning this award is a fantastic achievement for Megan and her team but more than that, this achievement will benefit the entire aged care industry. It demonstrates the passion, enthusiasm and dedication of the people who care for our elderly citizens” said John. Jenny Leaper readily agreed and added: “Across all of our homes we are now responsible for the care of over 1,000 residents. We are very proud of all of our people and tonight we are especially proud of Megan, she is a living example of what we, and hopefully the entire aged care sector, strive for.

Having only been in business for six weeks, Luke has been overwhelmed by the response the locals have provided to the new business, “everyone has been supportive of the business and willing to give us a go. They seem to appreciate the professionalism and timely response we offer. We pride ourselves on completing quality work in an efficient manner.” Overall, Sinnott Plumbing and

Gasfitting hopes to grow into a successful business that can support the community, “we are looking forward to meeting more of the locals and getting involved with the local committees” said Luke. Both Tahlia and Luke have signed up to play for the Ocean Grove Grubbers in 2011. “We are both keen sportspeople and looking forward to playing for the Grubbers. I’ll be assisting the up and coming footballers with their development over the next season” said Luke.

HERE to assist with the shortage of tradies in the area, is a new business to Ocean Grove, Sinnott Plumbing and Gasfitting. Sinnott Plumbing and Gasfitting’s leading man, Luke Sinnott has been plumbing for over 12 years and has experience in both domestic and commercial plumbing. During his time Luke has worked in Warrnambool and, in more recently, for a large plumbing firm in Melbourne. Also, over the last two years, Luke has been working for himself in inner city Melbourne. After a stint in Melbourne, Luke and his partner, Tahlia knew that it was time to ‘settle’ and Ocean Grove ticked all the boxes. “We always knew we wanted to get back to a town with a community atmosphere. Ocean Grove has a great family feel and being a coastal town is an added bonus” said Luke. Another added bonus was the growth and development opportunities that Ocean Grove gave a new business like Sinnott Plumbing and Gasfitting, “It had always been a goal of mine to establish a successful business in a growing and progressive community. Megan Holmes of TLC Aged Care’s Homestead Lakes in Wallington - centre - with TLC owners Dr John and Mrs Jenny Leaper.

TLC Aged Care in partnership with La Trobe University have recently completed a life changing project that changes the way we manage and care for people with dementia related illnesses. The EN-ABLE project was carried out in conjunction with Dr Margaret Winbolt who is a research fellow at the La Trobe University’s Australian Centre for Evidence Based Aged Care. The EN-ABLE project has a focus on providing a continuum of care by utilising management strategies for residents with dementia that enhance the quality of care by personalising the approach taken by staff on a daily and ongoing basis. Megan Holmes is a registered nurse at TLC Aged Care’s Homestead Lakes in Wallington and is the team leader for the EN-ABLE project. “We have generated significant change and now all staff at Homestead Lakes concentrates on person centred care which benefits not only the residents but the families as well” said Megan. Megan was recognised recently at the Deakin University 2010 Leadership in Nursing and Midwifery Awards. Megan was chosen from a highly qualified group of people for the “Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Leadership in a Rural Health Environment.”

Three in a row for home builder NICK and Allie Barker from Ocean Grove’s Hotondo Homes have won the Project Home – up to $300,000 at the 2010 HIA CSR Housing and Kitchen & Bathroom Awards held at The Palladium at Crown on Friday November 5. Nick and Allie won the Project Home – up to $300,000 for a Claremont 209 home that they built. The Claremont 209 is a great example of a beautiful home that is also affordable. Expressive, vocal and social I HAVE a pair of Common Myna or Indian Myna birds living in my backyard. These birds were introduced to Australia from South East Asia in the 1860's, to reduce the number of insects that were eating food crops. Common Myna's have flourished in Australia, and are now found all the way down the East Coast of Australia from Cairns to Melbourne. The Common Myna is a brown bird with a black head. It has a yellow beak and legs, and yellow feathers around the eye. There are white patches of feathers on the wing. The Common Myna is related to the Starling family of birds. They grow to about 26cm long. Common Myna's mate for life, and aggressively defend their territory from other birds. They take over nesting sites such as tree hollows from native birds and animals, and even kill the chicks of other birds. They are scavengers, and feed on food scraps, insects, fruits, vegetables, pet food, and small birds. Common Miner's can be confused with the native Noisy Miner, which is commonly found in Ocean Grove (especially around Kingston Park). The Noisy Miner is a member of the Australian Honeyeater family. It has a grey body with a yellow bill and yellow legs.

Common Myna or Indian Myna.

There are patches of black feathers around the eyes. They are around 29cms in length. Noisy Miner's are also found in many locations along the Australian East Coast. They inhabit woodlands, forests and urban parks. They feed on insects, nectar and fruit. Noisy Miners are very expressive, social and vocal, and congregate in small to large groups. They aggressively defend their territory and chase other birds away, even bigger birds such as Kookaburras. Noisy Miners breed in colonies and several broods may be reared in one season. The female constructs the nest and incubates the eggs, but both sexes will care for and feed the young birds. Additional 'helpers' also help feed the young. These helpers are almost always male birds.

Noisy Miners must find food (insects and nectar) within their territories all year round because they remain in their established habitat. This means that they need to live in environments that have year-round sources of nectar. Maybe I'll chase those Common or Indian Myna's out of my backyard! UPDATES: 1. There have been hundreds of deceased Short Tailed Shearwater birds washed up on the beach over the past few weeks. This is not an isolated occurance, even though it is distressing to see. This event, where many birds die, is known as a 'wreck'. It occurs periodically, usually in October or early November, soon after the birds return to Australian waters on their migration back from the northern Pacific Ocean.

BARWON COAST

Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. Caravan parks – Summer preparations With a couple of warm days at last comes the realisation that its 4 weeks to Christmas and summer holidays. In recent months our two major caravan parks have witnessed a range of maintenance activities plus internal upgrades to amenity blocks and new construction works nearing completion. At our Barwon Heads Caravan Park, two amenity blocks have been fully refurbished with new partitions, tiling and resealed flooring. Also within the Barwon Heads Caravan Park work is nearly complete on the new amenity block at the south end of the oval, replacing the old building constructed in the 1960’s. At our Riverview Family Caravan Park a similar major refit on an amenity block will provide campers with significantly improved facilities. All these works are funded through our successful operations of the caravan parks. Over summer we will be running major campaigns on litter management with a strong emphasis on recycling. Recently we have been offering an opportunity to campers to replace their old in-efficient incandescent light bulbs with modern energy-saving ones can significantly reduce carbon emissions. Works on the Ocean Grove Spit The two major projects being undertaken by contractors for the Barwon Water Alliance ie the boring under the Barwon River to take the new sewer main from Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads and the construction of a new sewer main thru the Spit from the south end of the Riverview Family Caravan Park are virtually complete. A major program of rehabilitating the area has now commenced with the objective of providing access to the Riverside Camping Grounds in mid December. Currently large sections of the area are barricaded off to give the revegetation works a chance to establish prior to the camping season and we ask that users of the area respect those barricades for the next 4 weeks. Centre Toilet Block, Ocean Grove – Update The new $1m amenity block project at the Ocean Grove Main Beach, our largest ever self funded project, is virtually complete with just the landscape works to be completed.

By the time they arrive back in Australia, the Shearwaters have usually expended most of their energy reserves. When they reach south-eastern Australia, sometimes they encounter unusual temperatures which affects the availability of their main sources of food, and they become exhausted. If there are also adverse weather conditions at the same time, such as the southerly gales, many are unable to deal with the rough conditions due to their fatigue, and large numbers drown and are washed up on the beach. I think that a flight from the Northern Pacific to the Southern Ocean would exhaust me too! The migration of birds is incredible. 2. The Swans and cygnets that I wrote about in the last edition of 'The Voice' are still going strong, which is great to see. They have moved to the bigger lake in the Bonnyvale Wetlands which is a very sensible move, as there is much more shelter available. 3. The two baby Masked Plovers that were living in the spare block in my street have survived and are now flying, which is also great to see. This is a tribute to the fine efforts of the Masked Plover parents. 4. One of the Hooded Plover Chicks on the Collendina Beach has disappeared, which is disappointing. Jennifer Carr

This project is the last major component of the Ocean Grove Main beach redevelopment project we commenced a decade ago starting with the relocation of the Surf Beach Road to the back of the coastal reserve, improving beach access safety for all visitors. Part of the sustainable footprint of the development is the construction of a 100,000 litre underground concrete tank to collect rainwater harvested from the roof and paved concourse that should provide for 70% of the peak season water used for toilet flushing. We expect that the amenity block will be open for use in early December. Rip to River Fun Run The 31st annual Rip to River Fun Run will be held on Monday 27th December 2010 starting at 10am at Point Lonsdale. There are also shorter events including a Nipper Fun Run at 10am at the Ocean Grove Main Beach The Fun Run is a major fund raising community event for the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club and registrations can be made directly on the clubs website: www.riptoriver.oceangroveslsc.asn.au Barwon Coast is pleased to again be a major sponsor of the event recognising the great work the Surf Club and its members do in providing beach safety for our local community and visitors alike. Life Guard Services Barwon Coast will again be funding the provision of Life Guard services at 18W beach on the Ocean Grove Spit (near RAAF’s Beach), over the coming peak summer season and will fund the provision of an additional life guard at the Ocean Grove Main Beach Summer Shuttle Bus Barwon Coast will again operate the FREE summer shuttle bus around Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove and recognises the financial support provided by the City of Greater Geelong and Coles. TWO Saint Ignatius College students have had their short film shortlisted for an annual film competition. Patrick Britt and Jakob Flynn, both 15 entered their short film ‘Decomposing our Beaches’ in the 2010 Future Shots Sustainability Film Challenge for Young Victorians at the start of the month. The competition is open to budding film makers under 25 from Victoria to make a three minute short film best embodying the theme, sustainability. Neighbourhood Watch Ocean Grove Areas 39/43 November 2010 NEWSLETTER Once again we would like to sincerely thank “Ocean Grove Voice” for donating and publishing our Newsletter for Ocean Grove Crime Statistics (Bellarine Police Area) Reports Sept/Oct/Nov 2010 - Incidents year to date Comparison wtih same period last year. Property Damage 42-73-50 Theft from motor car 9-29-51 Theft of Bicycle 3-6-3 Behaviour in Public 7-1-2 Burglary (residential) 9-18-23 Theft (shopsteal) 2-7-7 Theft of motor car 2-4-4 Theft (other) 15-31-42 Theft from Motor Vehicles It is important that all vehicles be locked when unattended, even when in your own driveway or carport. Make sure that all valuable items, GPS, Phones, etc. are kept well out of sight. It does not take

an enterprising thief long to obtain access to your vehicle, especially if left unlocked. If parking your vehicle in the street during the night select a well-lit area and consider installing any of the following: - An engine immobilizer - An ignition shield -A visible locking device -A battery isolator. As the weather gets warmer and we are again inundated with holiday makers and day trippers, we ask that people are vigilant as to what is happening around them. Crime prevention in the community is based mainly on the individual action of each member of the community to assist in lessoning the opportunities of crime occurring and as a community to observe and report to the police (or Crime Stoppers) any examples of seen. Keep an eye on neighbouring property, noting any movement of strange vehicles, etc. Keep all tools and equipment in a locked shed or garage. Lock all door and windows when away from your

premises, or if at home alone. Use deadlocks on exterior doors and windows where possible. Security mesh doors offer visibility and security. When on Holidays make sure that all deliveries (especially papers) are cancelled. Request a neighbour to clear your letterbox, or arrange for mail to be held at Post Office. Don’t hide a spare key on the property. Key Safety boxes are available (for a small fee) from Bellarine Police Community Support Register at the Police Station. Request a neighbour to keep an eye on your property. Leave a radio on and tune it to a talkback station. Divert your home phone to your mobile or lower the volume on your phone. Organise your light to come on with a timer switch. If going away for a long period – organise for someone to mow lawns. Schoolies Week Schoolies Week will commence on November 26th and run for two weeks. Many flock to the Surf Coast and we welcome them, but ask that

they observe all laws pertaining to drunken behaviour and disorderly conduct. Dob in a Drug Dealer Police are seeking help from the public to report drug dealers. Supt. Peter O’Neill, of Geelong Police, said the drug-dealing scene remained hidden and catching those involved relied heavily on public help. There is currently a significant drug problem in the Geelong area. The main drugs flooding our streets are marijuana, speed, ecstasy and illegal prescriptions (there are no such things as “recreational drugs”). To “dob in a dealer” anonymously, call Geelong Police on 52 553 100 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Thought for the month Bike Riders are now out in force (especially after the World Cup in Geelong) so be aware of them at all times and give them room to ride on the road as well. Bike riders must be aware of the need to often ride one abreast when roads are narrow.

Presidential chicken coup SURFSIDE Primary School gets fresh eggs every morning thanks to the Rotary Club of Ocean Grove, writes Carly Helweg. The Chook Shed was installed by volunteers over a few weeks and helps to enhance the kitchen garden program run by Surfside.

Rotary member Wal Kelly said they were happy to help improve Surfside’s kitchen garden program for the kids. “It was combined effort of volunteers, Rotary and parents and it’s a great addition to the garden here,” he said.

Surfside students care for a garden full of fruit, vegetables and now chickens and then cook meals using their fresh produce learning valuable skills and healthy eating habits for the future. Grade four student Elsie Lamb

said they gathered about six eggs from the chickens every morning and they were used in their kitchen to make different sorts of yummy food. “We’ve used them in egg and bacon pies and other different foods,” she said.

Christian College band on tour MORE than 100 children from Christian College recently attended a music tour of the Mornington Peninsula. The students left school on the Friday morning and travelled by ferry across to Sorrento, where they performed at the local Sorrento Primary School. On Saturday they were due to play at Dromana foreshore but, due to the inclement weather, they were invited to play at Dandenong Plaza. Being a Saturday the shopping centre was extremely busy and

the perfomance was very well attended. On the Sunday the students performed at Melbourne Zoo under clear skies and a warm day. There were six groups of performers - the Concert, Stage, Strings and Ceilidh Bands, as well as the Choir and a guitar ensemble. Although the rain pelted down for the first half of the weekend, spirits were high and the students enjoyed an eventful tour. Right: Christian College string musicians.

organise the day's events, said the girls had an absolute ball on the day.

Grubbers are working on gettng stronger and fitter for 2011.

FROM the grassy greens of the Collendina Caravan Park to the sandy surrounds of Ocean Grove main beach, the Grubbers senior footballers kicked off their pre-season campaign in style last week. The Ocean Grove senior playing group commenced their 2011 pre-season training on Monday November 22 at Collendina Caravan Park with a variety of kicking and running drills.

OCEAN Grove remains hopeful of luring exciting GFL St Joseph’s pair David King and Tom Balding to the Grubbers in 2011, writes Mark Heenan. Both players have indicated they will begin their pre-season campaign with the Grubbers. King, 29, and Balding, 23, who managed to play 16 senior games with St Joseph’s in 2010, have recently both relocated to the Ocean Grove region. King, who played 18 games and kicked 20 goals with St Joseph’s in 2010, has close family ties with the Ocean Grove Football Club. His brother-in-law is 2010 Grubbers Reserves playing coach and Ocean Grove Football Club multiple premiership player Kane Montgomery.

A beach session followed on Wednesday at the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club two days later in misty conditions where more than 20 players attended. Senior coach Cameron McGregor was pleased with more than 40 players hitting the training track with the main group last

Monday at Collendina. “Definitely happy. We had probably just on 40 numbers (here on Monday),” Ocean Grove senior coach Cameron McGregor said last week. “We had seven or eight new guys to the club, new faces, we had three or four of those guys that I didn’t know were turning up – so to get complete fresh faces was good. “The important thing now is I have identified what we lacked this year

football wise, and we will focus our pre-season on improving those areas, rather than coming in blind just trying to get us fitter and stronger.” Meanwhile in other news, Football Geelong has released the 2011 Bellarine Football League fixture. Ocean Grove plays three of their first five games at home. “I’m very happy (with the draw),” McGregor said.

The Grubbers meet last year’s runners-up Geelong Amateur in round three and reigning premiers Drysdale in round five at the Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve. Ocean Grove will meet Portarlington at Portarlington Recreation Reserve to open their season on Saturday April 9.

Ocean Grove netballer Jackie King, the wife of Montgomery, younger brother is David King. King and Balding are expected to commence pre-season training this week with the Grubbers. Ocean Grove senior coach Cameron McGregor said it was exciting to hear the news of Balding and King’s desire to complete a preseason at Ocean Grove. “At the moment Tom Balding is going to do the pre-season with us (at Ocean Grove), I believe David King is going to play for us next year but until they start to turn up and sign, then we don’t really know,” McGregor said. “I would think (if he comes) King would commit before Christmas, and Tom Balding if he does all the pre Christmas stuff

(training) there is a pretty good chance he will be playing here. “Balding is training here and he is not training at St Joeys.” Meanwhile the Grubbers have failed in their attempt to attract the close knit St Joseph’s experienced duo of Corey Bauer and Andrew Lovick. Lovick and Bauer had been in discussions with the Grubbers for a couple of months, after St Joseph’s failed to make the Geelong Football League 2010 finals. McGregor, who met with Bauer and Lovick in Ocean Grove last week, confirmed neither player wanted to switch to Ocean Grove for financial incentives in 2011. He said the reason for a possible transfer was the duo's desire to play in a

premiership in a local non-GFL league. Lovick and Bauer who have played in a string of losing GFL Grand Finals at St Joseph's, are yet to achieve the ultimate prize and play in a senior premiership at Joeys. St Joseph’s took time at the end of the season before appointing their new senior coach in late October, former AFL Melbourne high flying forward star Russell Robertson, a key factor behind Bauer and Lovick’s decision to stay at Joeys in 2011. McGregor said while both players had tremendous leadership skills, the club would now move on and shift its focus to their pre-season schedule. “It is always disappointing when you target a couple of guys

and you don’t get what you are after,” McGregor said. “But I’m extremely happy with the playing list we do have for 2011. “They were torn (between St Joseph’s and Ocean Grove) it was a good opportunity to come to a new club, new start - A start of hopefully something special over the next few years. “But they have been pretty loyal to St Joseph’s, and have been for numerous years so they have decided to stick by the club from what was a tough year in 2010 and getting a new coach (Russell Robertson) next year is quite exciting for them. "Lovick and Bauer are getting towards the end of their GFL careers and would like to taste the premiership success at some stage."

Mark Rapa (right) hands over the presidency to new club chief Brian Burgess. Brian has been involved in soccer in Ocean Grove, coaching many of the players from their first kick in the Surfside Centre and onto senior level competition.

Soccer’s new president club for a long time,” Burgess said. “Not necessarily the administration side, but on the outside coaching, helping, offering assistance.” Burgess has two children, son Brian Burgess Junior, who played with Surfside Waves, and daughter Bianca. “My on and daughter are wrapt, my daughter rings me and

says ‘El Presidente’,” Burgess laughed. He indicated one of the club’s biggest aims in the coming years was to build new clubrooms at their Shell Road, Ocean Grove base, depend upon on State Government funding. Rapa had spent six years as president of the Surfside Waves, before officially standing down last month. He said it was time to inject some fresh blood and new ideas into the club. “Brian had a chat with me a few weeks ago, he was going to put

up his hand to be vice-president,” Rapa said. “Then I thought about it overnight and I had a chat with him the next day and said ‘If you are going to be vice-president, why don’t you just go for presidency and nominate for that’ and he did. “Brian has been with the club since it formed and he has not stepped away from it. “He has been involved in some capacity – he is a good clubman and he is a passionate about the club.”

SOUL Longboard club held its last club day for the year in good conditions at Ocean Grove on the weekend of November 20. This event incorporated the annual Old Mal club comp, and there were plenty of the old boards and surfers brought out for the day. With over 50 surfers entered for the day the heats were kept running at a fast pace and a good 1.5 metre swell made for a tough paddle out. Surfers had plenty of room to spread out and chase either the lefts or rights coming through. Brian Thompson took out the Old Mal title this year dethroning Murf as the only name on the perpetual trophy so far. Some of the East Coast Maladiction club members attended the day and performed well in all classes and at the presentation night too. The presentation night was held at the River View Bistro at the Ocean Grove Golf Club and as usual Wendy and the team did a great job to feed the hungry surfers and families. The SOUL

DRYSDALE ripped through the heart of Collendina’s batting lineup in their round five A-Grade one-day clash at Drysdale Recreation Reserve. Collendina, who won the toss and batted first, were bowled out for the paltry score of 70 inside 32 overs. Drysdale took control early and had the Cobras stuck on the back foot at 3/0, star batters Ben Ricardo (0) and Corey Walter (0) both failing to trouble the scorers. The only batsman to add resistance to Drysdale’s bowling onslaught was Cobra opener Andrew Higgins (21). “It’s obviously disappointing, we need to be more consistent with

Heads one-dayer this weekend Continued from page 36. OCEAN Grove captain coach Lucas Cameron (pictured left) said it was disappointing their top of the table A-Grade clash against Barwon Heads at Barwon Heads would now be played as a oneday match. Both teams remain in

strong contention for finals with those matches being played over a twoday format in March. “It was clearly unsafe for play at 12:30pm (on Saturday) and with the

Rhys Zanoni leaving Grove

rain continuing to fall, captains agreed to play a one-day game (this weekend),” Cameron said. In other BPCA revised A-Grade round five oneday fixtures, Collendina plays host to Newcomb and Wallington is at home to Queenscliff.

Grubbers recruit Rhys Zanoni has quit the Ocean Grove Cricket Club. Zanoni, former firsts player with Geelong Cricket Association club Leopold, said a lack of enjoyment playing on the Bellarine and a pending hip operation were the reasons for his decision. The 27-year-old who informed the club last week of his decision, will undergo a hip operation later this month. He will visit a surgeon about his hip on December 13. Zanoni still remains a registered player at the Ocean Grove Cricket Club and the Grubbers remain hopeful he resumes playing in the new year with the club.

Unbeaten OCEAN GROVE A-Grade continued their unbeaten start to the season easily accounting for Anglesea by 106 runs in their revised round four one-day fixture on Saturday November 20. Anglesea sent the Grubbers into bat first at the Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve, and the visitors made early inroads with Ocean Grove on the back foot at 4/43 early in their innings. The Grubber top order of Lucas Baulch (0), Dean Gills (9), David Bate (20), and Adam Spiby (14) all failed to make a big score in the warm conditions. Enter all-rounder Michael Kenneady (70) who shared a 118-run partnership with up and coming youngster Corey Buxton (26), formerly of the Collendina Cobras Cricket Club. “Mick Kenneady batted really well, turned a bad start into a match winning total with Corey Buxton with a 118-run partnership,” Ocean Grove captain and coach Lucas Cameron said.

At the completion of their 40 overs, Ocean Grove posted a competitive total of 7/198. In reply Anglesea attacked the Grubbers bowlers early in their innings. Leading Ocean Grove bowler Rhys Zanoni took some punishment with one of his overs going for 14 runs.

But the visitors lost wickets at regular intervals during their innings and were bowled out for 92. Cameron, who took 3/16 from his seven overs was pleased with the final outcome as his side notched up their fourth win of the season. “We grabbed a couple of early wickets again to put

GROVE TURNS IT ON FOR FINAL COMP

Luke blow for Cobras attack

INSIDE Grubbers pre-season and Bellarine fixtures

ONE DAY FOR BATTLE OF THE BRIDGE THE wet start to the 2010/11 Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association season continues to hamper the league's twoday format competition, writes Mark Heenan. Round five two-day matches in A, B and C Grades and the D Grade one-

day match were cancelled yet again on Saturday after rain washed out all games. Rain has ruined any chance of play during day one of the previously scheduled BPCA two-day fixtures in Rounds two, three, four and five. BPCA secretary Daryl Burns

understands the frustration of the clubs inability to play two-day cricket matches because of inclement weather. “Not only is it disappointing for the league, but it is also disappointing for all the clubs - they are all preparing for twoday fixtures,” Burns said.

“We can't do anything about the weather - it is a two-day competition and if we get washed out (on a weekend) we have to run with one-day games the next week.” Continued page 35.

THE immediate playing future of Collendina Cobras star bowler Luke Veitenheimer remains in doubt, writes Mark Heenan. The 28-year-old who played one match this season for the A-Grade Cobras against Barwon Heads in Round one, has revealed he has stress fractures in his foot. He attended training last week and was expected to be in the mix for Collendina's A-Grade round five clash against Newcomb this weekend. Veitenheimer, the premier bowler in the BPCA A-Grade competition in 2009/10 taking 46 wickets at an average of 11.80 was a key catalyst in delivering Collendina's first ever A-Grade BPCA premiership last season. "I won't be playing anytime soon, if at all," Veitenheimer told the Voice exclusively last week. "Got stress fracturers, could play on them but (that) would be real bad in the long run. "Need four months rest."
