Give this Easter and help the kids YOU would never guess that at one time in 11-year-old Zac Nelson’s life he was confined to a wheelchair. Running around with his cousins, the Our Lady Star of the Sea student is now the picture of health. Zac was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma at the age of four after he complained of stomach pains and began losing the use of his legs. Zac’s mum Jennie said he was diagnosed with a spinal tumor after an MRI scan in Geelong on May 11 2004. He was immediately referred to Dr Patrick Lo at the Melbourne Royal Children’s Hospital. “He was diagnosed at 11am and by the time we got to the children’s at 3pm he was in surgery within two hours of getting there,” she said. Zac’s tumour was bigger than a tennis ball and required intensive surgery that included the removal of a part of his spine. “He (Dr Lo) was great, he let us know that it was very serious and he would do everything he could,” Jennie said. SPORT HUB HOPE OCEAN Grove’s sporting teams shouldn’t lose hope yet, according to the state government. Despite recent fears that the Shell Road Sporting Precinct project wouldn’t go ahead in the foreseeable future, state liberal representatives have said the plans are still on the agenda. The Minister for Sport and Recreation, Hugh Delahunty, said that despite not being part of government policy, Shell Road was still up for discussion. A spokeswoman for Mr Delahunty said the May 3rd budget would honour all election commitments. “The Ocean Grove project is not off the agenda for the government, however, it was not part of the party’s policy platform for the 2010 state election,” she said. “The minister has asked his Department of Sport and Recreation to have ongoing discussions with Geelong City
Council on this project and he is keen to see this continue.” During the 2010 State Election, Labor MP Lisa Neville committed the last $5 million needed for the project to progress. Ms Neville retained the seat of Bellarine but the change of government left a question mark over funding. 2010 Bellarine Liberal candidate Kurt Reiter said he believed the project was critically important and would continue to lobby for it within the Liberal Party. “It was not a coalition promise but that does not mean it won’t go ahead,” Mr Reiter said. “The team were seriously concerned about the state of the finances so many costly commitments were not able to be made, Shell Road included.” Meanwhile the City of Greater Geelong has appointed Haskell Architects to develop the detailed design for the new clubrooms proposed for Shell Road.
Benefits of Tax Planning Businesses and investors should discuss tax planning issues with their accountant before 30 June 2011 to achieve maximum results and minimise tax. Call Helen Butteriss or Luke Andrews now to make an appointment or to obtain a copy of our Tax Planning Checklist.

Businesses raising cash for kids’ appeal Give this ONCE again Ocean Grove residents will put their full fundraising weight behind the Good Friday Appeal. Local businesses are hosting various fundraisers in the attempt to overtake last year’s total of more than $42,000 raised for the Royal Children’s Hospital. The Mex is holding its
annual Thursday night auction starting from 7:30pm with items up for sale including meats and foods, a variety of vouchers and plenty of other donations from local businesses. The region’s CFA, including teams from Ocean Grove, Wallington and Mannerim, will be rattling tins around the
town on Good Friday and the big count-up afterwards at The Mex will this year be streamed live on Channel Seven as part of their coverage of the appeal. Club Grove is holding its annual Good Friday dinner in its brand new dining room from 5:30pm, with an auction starting at 7pm. Tickets
start at $9 and are available from reception. Utopia hair salon is hosting a raffle throughout the week leading up to the long weekend with prizes including hair products and vouchers. Tickets will be on sale in the salon, with the winners drawn on Easter Monday.
Symbol grown from a seed OCEAN Grove RSL joined Bellarine Rail Trail and Legacy members for the planting of a Lone Pine off the Portarlington Road last week. The tree has been placed on the Avenue of Honour, on the northerly end of Curlewis Road. The tree is significant in being a direct descendant of the original Lone Pine seed brought back from Gallipoli. The tree is one of 18 in the Geelong and Bellarine region and is likely to grow to about 15 metres. • ANZAC Day preparations page 7. The tree was planted by John Burton, Geelong Legacy, Alistair McKintosh of the Bellarine Rail Trail Association and Ocean Grove RSL president Bill Huggins.

THE Ocean Grove Community Association has welcomed community input into the future of the town. The OGCA hosted about 25 members of the community at its annual general meeting to discuss the past year and the next 12 months for Ocean Grove. CEO John Fendyk said the Ocean Grove Community Picnic was a great success and thanked everyone who attended. “I would like to thank all for the support given
to the picnic event by many individuals and organisations in making the day such a success,” he said. “I hope the people who came along discovered that the Ocean Grove Community has many people involved in making the town and the community what it is today.” The meeting covered infrastructure news including the new toilet block going in at The Parade car park, with works starting in May. transport were also hot topics again with discussion about the proposed Tuckfield Street and Marlin Drive intersection. VicRoads has completed the design work for the intersection upgrade including turning lanes and traffic lights. This will replace the current school flag crossing allowing for safer access to the Shell Road Reservation. The next step for the project will be a $750,000 funding commitment from the state government. Areas of concern also highlighted
for future attention were environment and sustainability, community health services, recreation opportunities and preschool and childcare. OGCA is encouraging more interaction between the community and the association via their website which is currently being improved. “We are planning on engaging interested people to facilitate the continued updating of the website, www.ogca.com.au to better inform the Community,” John said.
Easter and help FROM PAGE 1 Zac’s surgery was a success but left him unable to use the lower half of his body for six months. They also had to make the trip to Melbourne once a week for chemotherapy treatment and numerous tests. “During the first two years we were in and out of the kid’s hospital all the time, but the staff there are truly fantastic,” Jennie said. “He loves Playstation and every time he stayed there they made sure he had new games.” Zac was suitably impressed. “You didn’t even have to get up to change the game,” he said. Many of Zac’s memories of the hospital include playing games and visiting McDonalds which Jennie said shows the great things the staff there do to make kids’ stays there less stressful. “He never once cried about going into hospital,” she said. Zac has now been in remission for five years but still requires regular blood tests and scans to ensure he stays cancer free. They now watch the Good Friday Appeal and know how it feels to be in the shoes of families shown on television. “The first couple of years it was people you know from being there, but now watching it you can understand what they’re going through,” Jennie said. Jennie said she and Zac have seen the changes at the hospital since their time there and know how much donations from the Good Friday Appeal can help make a stressful time in hospital a little bit easier for kids and their families. “There has been so many changes in seven years, walking around you can see the difference.”

Start of Grove’s northerly growth area proves hot topic among locals OCEAN Grove’s newest estate was the hot topic at the Ocean Grove Community Association’s annual general meeting. Oakdene Estate will be located at the back of Kingston Estate in the northeastern corner of Ocean Grove and will go back as far as Oakdene Vineyards on Grubb Road. Representatives for the estate spoke to the
OGCA and attendees sparking much discussion about the project. Association CEO John Fendyk said the attitude towards the project was generally very positive with people mainly interested in the impact to the town. “One of the issues of consequence was how long it was going to take and they indicated the project will take place
over about 10 years,” John said. “Generally it was well received.” John said people were also very interested in the environmental impact the estate will have, especially towards the amount of trees that will have to be cut down. “They were very concerned with the green side of things, trees, grass, parks and football fields,
the planners want to make sure there are plenty of recreation areas.” Stage one is expected to be released later this year and John said the association was excited about the project. “From the association’s point of view, anything that’s good for Ocean Grove is good for us,” he said. INSPIRING WORDS: Saira Shah has won an award for a story she wrote about being an Afghan refugee.
Refugee’s story wins OCEAN Grove’s Saira Shah is an inspirational 13-year-old and has the trophy to prove it. The Bellarine Secondary College student was awarded the Inspiration Award at the recent Impetus Youth Awards run by Geelong City Council. Saira was nominated for the award by one of her teachers after she read Saira’s story about her life and the struggles she and her family have gone through. Born in Afghanistan,
Saira and her family overcame countless obstacles to flee the oppressive Taliban regime five years ago and eventually settle together on the Bellarine Peninsula. Saira said she wrote the compelling story for her family and friends to read after an excursion to the Melbourne Immigration Museum. “We had to write about the place we enjoyed visiting the most and for me it was the immigration museum; I then decided
to write a book,” she said. “It’s about my journey from Afghanistan and all the things I have achieved and what my dad has achieved and about his time in a detention centre.” The book took Saira about five weeks to write, edit and attach photos before she showed it to several teachers at Bellarine. “I’ve had a couple of teachers read it for me,” she said. Saira received a $500
prize as part of her award which will help pay for her other passion, playing the violin. Ocean Grove Councillor Jan Farrell helped to present the certificates and prizes to all the Impetus Award winners. “Year after year I am inspired by the young people nominated for our youth awards,” Cr Farrell said. “Yet again the high calibre of nominees made it very difficult to select the 12 winners.”
OCEAN Grove’s spirit has once again sprung to help a local in need. As reported in the last edition of the Voice, 11-year-old David Sheehan’s treasured BMX bike was stolen by a callous thief when staying at a friend’s house. David’s mum Toni can’t afford to replace the $600 MirraCo Essex bike which was given to David for Christmas but has received several generous offers from different people. If you have seen this bike contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Chicken shop changing of the guard Captain Chook hanging up his wings at popular food and music venue OCEAN Grove’s much-loved Captain Chook is becoming a free-range retiree. John Bowman, owner of the Piping Hot Chicken Shop, has decided to sell up and hand the keys to the bain-marie over to his successor, Ben Chudoschnik. John and his wife Marjie are retiring after twenty years of hard work in making the Chicken Shop into the Ocean Grove institution it is today. John said the sale was a bittersweet moment for him. “Every summer I get tired and grumpy and want to put it on the market, but this year I did it,” he said. Ben said he jumped at the chance to own a small slice of Ocean Grove history. “John’s been here 20 years and the next bugger will be here another 20 so I thought I better get in quick,” he said. “If we can fill the shoes half as well as John has, he’s created a bit of an institution here.” Locals need not fear as the
Chicken Shop is staying within the family. Ben and his wife Mikaela met while working behind the counter for more than six years in the late 1990s. The couple still live in Ocean Grove and are expecting their first child in July. Ben said they were planning on keeping the shop just as locals know it and would eventually make some of their own additions including opening for dinner. “People don’t have to worry, the music nights are staying, the chips and gravy are staying and we’ll just add a few extra touches ourselves during the next couple of months,” he said. John and Marjie wanted to thank their customers for their support before the handing over of the keys on May 16. “We want to thank people for their patronage over the years and their support, all the customers have given us great support and so have the holiday makers,” he said.
HANDING OVER THE REINS: Captain Chook John Bowman has sold the Piping Hot Chicken Shop to Ben Chudoschnik.
John said he was especially proud of all the young, local music acts that he has given a stage to over the last five years. “When I leave here, I will
leave with a post-musical glow,” he said. He will take time now to spend with his grandchildren and continue his commitment to
local groups like the Ocean Grove Arts Network and the Bellarine Greens. Don’t worry though, he will still be rocking out at the Chicken Shop’s
music gigs, only this time from the other side of the counter. “The original Captain Chook will still be floating around the music nights,” he said.

more than I expected. Congratulations to Richard Grimmett and his band of volunteers who put together a great day for us here in the Grove. All I can say is more please. Wally Gee Ocean Grove RSL

THIS year’s ANZAC Day is set to be one of Ocean Grove’s biggest thanks to it falling on Easter Monday. Ocean Grove RSL’s newest member Phillip Martin was given the task of organising the day which will hopefully include many holidaymakers spending their Easter in Ocean Grove. At 43, Phil is one of the younger members at the RSL and has 24 years of RAAF service behind him including Iraq 2007. Phil spoke of the camaraderie he enjoys through being a member. “I love being around military men and women, being able to share your experiences,” he said. The dawn service will begin at 6.15am at the Ocean Grove Cenotaph with surrounding roads closed to traffic. A wreath-laying ceremony will take place along with the sounding of the Last Post. Morning tea will then be held at the Neighbourhood Centre while Ocean Grove RSL is also providing breakfast to anyone wishing to attend.

The show must go on IT was a case of the festival of all seasons at Ocean Grove. Previous ‘summer’ festivals have enjoyed sunset sessions by top musicians on the Terrace main stage. This year though, the best weather was enjoyed by the community stage acts, the kids art zone and the many buskers that turned out to do their thing. A good crowd swell by lunchtime and all looked good for the rest of the day. But as the shower hit and radar
reports indicated it would set in, the organisers took the safety inspired measure of relocating inside the Chicken Shop for the final day’s bands. Visitors also got the chance to meander though the Grove’s makeshift art gallery - the Trak Arcade - where local painters, illustrators and photographers put on a show. Laughs and thanks at drop-in’s 10 year reunion ABOUT 60 former Ocean Grove dropin attendees made a ten year reunion at the Neighbourhood Centre on Friday night. Those that couldn’t sent emails, texts, and photos from as far away as Canada, demonstrating just how important the facility had been to them in their teenage days. More than 2,000 have gone through the drop-in, in its ten years and many have
returned to pass on their experiences helping out the newest attendees. During the social evening, Neighbourhood Centre co-ordinator Nicki Dunne spoken about her pride in seeing all the friends back again and shared a few of her best memories. Former attendee Fraser Emery thanked Nicki and the staff on behalf of his peers. The drop-in meets on Friday nights from 6pm and is free.

Life was about love, passion JOHN Francis Green, local lawyer and poet has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 72. John Green was my husband and best friend for more than 26 years. He was terrifically brave. For those who knew him he was a different sort of man, a man not easily forgotten for his passionate take on life. He loved and was loved, the best testimonial a person can have. John entered the Jesuit seminary at Corpus Christi, Werribee after high school in 1956, to study for the priesthood and was an extremely motivated student. He left the seminary in late 1960 to take up a law career. As a young lawyer he was immediately thrust into the court room working with the Crown. His first case was the trial of Ronald Ryan (the last person to be executed in Victoria).
LOVER OF LIFE: Lawyer and poet John Green adored living and working in small communities like Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. Picture: SHANEY BALCOMBE.
John became well recognised as a leading barrister in Melbourne and ran his own successful legal firm, John F. Green & Co., in Lonsdale Street opposite the Supreme Court. During this time he also completed a further degree and in 1976 graduated as a Master of Laws. He also now had four sons, today fine men and fathers who say with pride that it was his influence which guided them to all become successful in
their chosen careers. John always possessed a confirmed passion for study and writing and continued to write and publish a number of books of poetry, along with essays, articles and opinions, in various journals, newspapers and literary magazines. He would later take this further, encouraging poetry writing in schools with The Living Poet’s Society. In 1987, John sold his Melbourne practice and opened the legal firm
John F. Green at 66 The Terrace, Ocean Grove. From the first week, John revelled in the role of sole practitioner, now free to apply his expertise and enthusiasm to a wider variety of matters. Over the years there would often be no fee, but payment would arrive at the office in the form of a box of home-grown vegetables, a bag of live yabbies or bright handsewn bow ties. John remained a practising lawyer until his
death, even to the extent of assisting a fellow patient who was in some difficulty in the same Geelong palliative unit in February. John was good for his children, my children and his grandchildren. He fostered traditions and celebrations which they all recall with great joy. John Green is survived by his four sons, Andrew, Simon, Nicholas and Julian, his stepchildren, Warren and Danielle, all of our grandchildren and myself, Myra.

CHEERY SOUNDS: The laughing kookaburra’s laughing sound is a territorial call warning others to stay away.
Laughter in the bush I HAVE seen a Kookaburra in Grubb Road, Wallington Road, and the nature reserve during the past few years. I don’t know if there are several kookaburras living in this area, or if I keep seeing the same one, as it is always on its own. Kookaburras are large (28-42cm) birds that belong to the Kingfisher family. The species found in Victoria and Eastern
Australia is known as the laughing kookaburra. They have been introduced to Tasmania, Western Australia and New Zealand. The call of the laughing kookaburra is thought to be a territorial call to warn other kookaburras to stay away. The loud ‘koo-koo-koo-koo-kookaa-kaa-kaa’ is often sung in a chorus with other individuals. The
laughing kookaburra also has a shorter ‘koooaa’, which is normally given when accompanied by other members of its family group. The other species of kookaburra found in Australia is the blue-winged kookaburra, found in Queensland. The laughing kookaburra is generally off-white below, faintly barred with dark brown, and brown on the back
and wings. The tail is barred with black and white. There is a conspicuous dark brown eye-stripe through the face. It is one of the larger members of the kingfisher family. Kookaburras are found in varied habitats ranging from forests to grassy areas, and even in suburban areas. They live anywhere where there is a readily available water and food supply, and

BARWON COAST
Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. Our Committee members are all local residents from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and are appointed by the State Government following the public advertising for expressions of interest 13th Beach Trails Barwon Coast’s draft plan to provide 3 trails within Barwon Heads to improve safety of access to the beaches on 13th Beach Rd for pedestrians and recreational cyclists has been on display for comments and submissions. Two of the trails link Stephens Parade Barwon Heads to beach access points on 13th Beach Rd whilst the third links alongside the road to the 13th Beach SLSC. Whilst the period of time for the lodging of submissions has now closed, details are still available on our web site www.barwoncoast.com.au Our Committee members are reviewing all 119 submissions prior to deciding on the next stage of this project. Dog Free Beaches The dog free beaches declaration changed on 1st February with dogs allowed back on the Ocean Grove Beach (west of 13W Hodgson St), but they must be on a leash until the end of April. This also applies to the Barwon River beaches. From 13W (Hodgson St) east towards Collendina, dogs are permitted under effective
tree cover. Kookaburras eat lizards, snakes, insects, mice, small birds, worms, and frogs. One pinched a sausage out of my daughter’s hand at Wye River, so they are clever at sourcing their food. Laughing kookaburras mate for life. Offspring usually hang around in the flock with the parents for up to two years.

control. Effective control is when your dog is within your sight and can be controlled by voice command. There are some sections of beach where dogs are prohibited all year around including west of 40W on 13th Beach which is a known Hooded Plover nesting area. There are from time to time other areas temporarily fenced off when a Hooded Plover nest / scrape is found and we ask that dogs be put on a leash in such areas. Please remember to “pick up after your dog” so that other users of beaches are not inconvenienced. Use the “Scoop the Poop” bags provided by Barwon Coast. Ocean Grove Main Beach When the seawall and promenade at the Ocean Grove Main Beach was rebuilt in 2009, new terracing was constructed beside the amenity block and beach access. The terracing was “completed” with a course sand surface rather than grass, acknowledging the then existing water restrictions and drought conditions. Work has recently commenced on replacing the coarse sand with kikuyu grass (drought tolerant) that will be laid (in rolls) across the area this week. Sheepwash Classic Fun Run This year will see the 30th Anniversary running of the Sheepwash Classic Fun Run and for the fifth consecutive year we are taking the opportunity to further support our local community by sponsoring the naming rights for the event which is a significant part of the Barwon Heads Primary School Easter Fair. Additionally we will sponsor the first prize both male and female in Fun Run for the 15th consecutive year. We look forward to your participation and enjoyment of the natural environment during the Barwon Coast Sheepwash Classic Fun Run on Saturday 23rd April as the course winds its way through the coastal reserve, the caravan park , onto the beach and back to the school. A slightly different course is planned for this year including running across the new pedestrian bridge and continues with last year’s addition of a full lap of the trail around the top of the Barwon Heads Bluff. Great views if you are not running to hard! I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager Barwon Coast, Ewing Blyth Drive, Barwon Heads

Singer song-writer Craig Horne together with guitarist Jeff Burstin from Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons and the Black Sorrows, is joined by guitarist Wayne Burt also from Jo Jo Zep and the Black Sorrows, Wayne Duncan from Daddy Cool on bass, Chris Tabone from the Bad Loves on drums and Bruce Haymes on keyboards from the Paul Kelly and Renee Geyer bands. They play the Chicken Shop on Saturday.
Poetry makes it happen

AUDEN was wrong. Poetry makes something happen. The presence of over 25 attendees at the 20th anniversary of the Ocean Grove U3A poetry group attests to this. If not for poetry, it wouldn’t have happened. Original members Dorothy Cook, Margaret Duckworth and Jean Goddard held the crowd enthralled when they spoke of the groups first meetings back in 1991. Members read from their own work, which included poems that were both
heartfelt and funny and celebrated the rich vein of poetic inspiration that runs through many of Ocean Groves’ residents. Past members who have died over the years were recalled with fondness. They included founding member Loraine Giles, and Ocean Grove identity John Green, who died a few weeks ago after a battle with cancer. The day took a risqué and hilarious turn when Romney Long presented current group head Ena Roach with a flowerpot and read a
poem from a book of poetry entitled ‘Which Knickers?’ The poem had the crowd in stitches and illustrated the good humour for which the group prides itself. A chocolate cake as rich as the discussion was cut in honour of the anniversary. Attendees looked over photo boards with images of past meetings, and marvelled at the records of the group that showed which poet was studied when over the entire 20 years of the group’s meeting By Hamish Brooks.

Wild Turkey ready to rock ONE of Australia’s most popular and longest running rockabilly bands is set to shake The Ocean Grove Hotel later this month supported by local band Skabang. Wild Turkey is a three-piece Melbourne band that is the true embodiment of original rock’n’roll. What can you say about a band that drives a hearse for a tour bus? The album title Love That Kills says it all. This isn’t about sweet
and gushy love, it’s an insatiable burning desire that moves the bones. Tequila-drenched and inspired lyrics, a thumping rhythm, rockabilly twangin’ guitar, and bumpin’ double bass takes you back to the roots of rock’n’roll. Wild Turkey is one of the longest running rockabilly bands in the Southern Hemisphere and is possibly the longest continuously gigging psychobilly band in

MASSIVE SAVINGS!
Grove at the Aussies OCEAN Grove Surf Lifesaving Club impressed at the Australian Championships on the Gold Coast. The club took a squad of 55 seniors and masters to the competition at Kurrawa, a little south of Broadbeach, a locale that served up some challenging conditions for competitors. “The surf built from about April 1. Everyone did really well to handle it. It was really big surf but nothing like the cyclonic conditions of last year,” said club captain Fontaine Portelli. “After the disappointment of
By HAMISH BROOKS
last year’s cancelled events it was just really good to get out there and compete”. Complementing Cassie Vincent’s fine individual performance, the Rescue and Resuscitation team, of which Fontaine was a member, came fourth in their open final. The under 17 girls surf team came fourth in their final. Mark Graham also performed strongly, completing a trifecta of fourths, with his effort in the 3035 category surf race.
The event unsurprisingly had a great atmosphere and was held in fine weather. “There were lots of Victorian clubs up there this year, which always helps,” said Fontaine. Most of the squad stayed on for the full week from April 2-10. The team celebrated the end of a successful season with what is becoming an annual dinner on the Sunday night at the end of competition. “It was good to have a bit of a celebration and have a few drinks,” said Fontaine, who is looking forward to the off-season
and a reduction in the hefty workload that comes with being team captain. “I’ve loved being captain this year and got amazing support from everyone whenever I’ve needed it.” Ocean Grove will have their presentation night in June followed by their AGM. Competition training will start again in August. The first big event of the new season is the Frenzy, a fundraiser held in conjunction with Ocean Grove businesses. It will be staged in late October.

THE Ocean Grove Sharks under 16 basketball side won a thrilling grand final against Christian College Eagles White, 27-25. The Sharks finished the year on top of the ladder with a percentage of 147 and four games clear of their nearest rival but only hit the front in the final with minutes to go in the game. “I think I lost about five kilos in sweat from the stress,” said David Benness , the Sharks’ clearly rapt coach. “Having had such a good year there was a lot of pressure to win the premiership. This was our window I told the boys. We got in front with five minutes to go and were able to hold onto the ball.” Impressively, the Sharks played the year with six players and

played against sides with players who were a year older than them. What makes the Sharks win even more satisfactory was that the team has been together since the under 8s and David has coached them all the way through. This was their first flag. “I must have coached this side for 160-170 games. We were runners up last year and we had to earn it this year. I’m really happy for the boys. It was a great thing for them. “They are a great bunch of kids. They just went out and played, they never did their block if things weren’t going their way and they stuck together for all these years. We had a massive
celebration after the game.” Apart from his pleasure at the grand final win, David reserves most of his amazement for how much the boys have grown, from six or seven year old boys who he was bending over to address, to the young men pushing six foot today. “I’m cranking my neck looking up them now,” he said. “I need a box to stand on to look them in the eye.” A high level of sportsmanship seems to characterise the way David and his side went about things and he was full of praise for the Christian College Eagles White side. “They were outstanding in the way they went about the game, very sportsmanlike, and they
were genuinely happy for us afterwards,” he said. David, who played basketball for at least 30 years before turning to coaching more than a decade ago, thinks he’s got at least one more year with the team. “I’m getting involved at St Ignatius in a development role with their year seven and eight sides and I think the boys might be better served by another coach as they move into the under 18s. Although nothing’s finalised yet. “A couple of them could easily go on and play at a higher level.” The winning players were: Mark Benness, Elliot Hackett, Campbell Revie, James Hodder, Callum McKay and Luke Bastiaan. They also play for Cobras junior footy club.

ON SURFSIDE Waves senior side continued its pre-season warm up with a practice match against Barwon at Shell Road on Sunday. There were plenty of goals in a well contested match that also included a worrying knee injury for playercoach Chris Puttyfoot. The side, which features three brothers Lewis, Gabe and Troy McClelland, begins its 2011 campaign with an away fixture at Breakwater on May 1. Pictured left: Alex Monroe.

cobras
Cobras junior football round up COLLENDINA Cobras first two rounds before Easter. Round: 1 Cobras U/14 A’s Vs Geelong Amateur Final Score: Ammos 14:13 – 97 Cobras 3: 3 – 21 Captain(s): Harry Walker Best Players 1. Luke Bastiaan 2. Zakk Belmann 3. Byron Taylor 4. Darcy Pearson 5. Zach Dynes Going up against a Division 1 grand finalist from last year always looked to be a tough ask – and so it proved. Despite an inspired four-quarter effort from Luke Bastiaan in the ruck, the Cobras boys were out-played and out-muscled for the majority of the game. The Ammos controlled the game from the first bounce and The Cobras just couldn’t get into the game until the last quarter when some of the boys showed what they were capable of. Zakk Bellmann was moved from the back line to the forward line and his bustling efforts were rewarded with two goals. A couple of other first year boys in Byron Taylor and Darcy Pearson did enough to suggest that they will be handy contributors throughout the year. The boys will learn a lot from the game and some improvement in coming weeks is assured. Round: 2 Cobras U/14 A’s Vs St Marys Final Score: St Marys 11.12:78 defeated OGCC 7.2:44 Captain(s): Best Players 1. Nat Gravener 2. Isaac Wilkins 3. Cameron Drake 4. Ned Weatherley 5. Andy Douglas The Cobras boys had a point to prove after their disappointing season opener - and they succeeded! Although the end result wasn’t in their favor, they played with great tenacity, poise and teamwork against last year’s Division 1 premiers. The Cobras attacked the ball hard from the first bounce and combined
well all over the ground. At quarter time, they held a slight lead due to their solid team play and a pair of nice finishing goals by Isaac Wilkins. St Marys bounced back in the second and third quarters but The Cobras played their hearts out. Ned Weatherly and Andy Douglas were showing the way in the backline and their play typified the Cobras spirit. Down on the scoreboard but breaking even in general play, the Cobras boys fought the game right out. Riley Hollmer bobbed up with a couple of cracking last quarter goals and Nat Gravener was doing it all – running, tackling, kicking goals from the boundary and getting plenty of the ball. Cam Drake was solid all day and ran the game right out as did most of his team mates. St Marys proved a bit too strong on the day but there are wins coming soon for The Cobras. Round 1 Cobras U12 Orange Vs Drysdale Hawks Final Score: Cobras Orange Drysdale Captains: Kyle Lock, Tahj Bellman Best Players 1.J.Synnott 2.B.Newton 3.Oliver Monteith 4.William Blackman 5.AJ Meadows The first game of the season produced an absolute cracker. The Cobras attacked the ball ferociously and supported one another as though they had played together for seasons. Big man Kalin Esler took some great grabs, while speedsters Max Fairbrother and Jesse Caligiuri roved the packs with great success. Ben Bennett used his pin point accurate drop punts to drive the Cobras into attack time and time again. Jai Penny showed some real class with blocks and shepherds to protect team mates. A goal of the year contender from Lachy Gawley Price had the crowd on its feet, and with classy on baller Oliver Monteith bagging 3 majors the Cobras came
home in the last quarter to sneak over the line in what was a great game of skill from both teams. Craig Goodger (2) Ed Ford, Kalin Esler and Joe McDonald also booted goals on the day. Well Done Cobras. Round 2 Cobras U12 Orange Vs Belmont Lions Final Score: Cobras Orange 16.17.113 Belmont 0.0.0 Captains: Best Players 1. Etham Bell 2.Joe McDonald 3.Lochlan Habgood 4.William Townsen 5.Harry Dodds On a very windy Sunday morning at the Snake Pit, the Cobras Orange side took on a much smaller and inexperienced side in the Belmont Lions. The Cobras played as they trained and didn’t miss a beat. Harry Dodds was exceptional with his run and attack on the ball and was helped out by Ethan Bells tough tackles and pressure.Wilzen Crawford was magnificent in the centre and drove the Cobras deep into attack many times. Lochlan Hapgood showed no fear and with his great skills, set up many switches across the ground to help the Cobras go forward. It was great to see Harry Rowsell have his first game for the side after an injury plagued pre season and he didn’t disappoint by bagging a beauty from a fair way out. Jesse Caligiuri set the scoreboard alight with 3 magnificent majors and shared the goals with plenty of other Cobras. The Cobras played the game in fantastic spirit and enjoyed a good day out. Well done Cobras Round: 1 Cobra’s U/12 White V’s Lara 1 Score: Lara 15.8.98 D Cobra’s 04.06 30 Captains: S.Beasley,J. Bowers Best Players: H.McManus, R.Symonds, L.McVilly, J.Bowers After a slow start against a bigger and taller Lara side, the boys regrouped in the second half and showed some good signs by playing
in front and great tackling. The boys ran hard and had a fun time for the first game of the season. Round:2 Cobra’s U/12 White Vs Grovedale Gold Final Score:Cobra’s 01.02.08 Grovedale Gold 20.12.132 Captain(s):B.Tyler, L.Conquit. Best Players 1.B.Tyler 2.C.Richardson 3.C.O’Keefe 4.N.Taylor Brief summary of game: The boys tried hard all day but were beaten by a much bigger and stronger side who used the ball well in very windy conditions. Round 1 U12 Blue OGCC Vs Modewarre Captain: Lachlan Madden Results: Modewarre 11.10-76 defeated OGCC Blue 4.4-28 Best Players: Jace Franken, Jack Havis, Corey Ivec, Riley Menzies, and Harry Unkenstein. It was a bit of an experience to navigate to the Modewarre Football Ground if you haven’t been there before. A quick look at Google or the Melways was always going to be a good idea! Everyone arrived on time for a 10.20 am start. All of the boys and parents were
excited for the first match of the Football season to begin. For some it was their very first game of competitive football and they all took it in their stride. The opposition had a few tall players but we started off well with the first goal of the match by Angus Benson. We were up by two points at quarter time but from there it was going to be a bit of an uphill battle with Modewarre scoring five goals in the 2nd quarter. Through the middle, Logan Taylor and Michael Smith were taking some brilliant marks and pushing the ball forward. The boys fought hard and out scored Modewarre in the third quarter but were to go down by 48 points when the final siren was sounded. The boys did extremely well and should hold their heads high as it was a brilliant first game. Well done to all of the U12 Cobra Blue players! Round 1 Cobras Under 14 (3) Vs Sth Barwon 7.15.57 The boys got off to a great start with a few handy goals by Aaron Dedini and Brant Carlile in the first half and gutsy efforts by Hugh Browne and Lachlan Smith. Overall they played really well for their first game.

Grove double up Anglesea OCEAN Grove seconds were comfortable winners kicking 15.14-104 to Anglesea’s 9.2-56. Playing coach Kane Montgomery said it was an even contest for three quarters. “We had the breeze in the first quarter but didn’t use it that well. Our fitness started to show in the second quarter and we got back into the game with ten minutes of good footy.” The grubbers held a ten point lead at half-time. Anglesea played well in the
third quarter reducing the margin to six points at the final change. Anglesea kicked the first goal of the last quarter but from then on it was all Ocean Grove. “We brought the mosquito fleet on in the last quarter and we ran Anglesea off their legs,” said Kane. Better players included new recruits Clinton Place and Matty Uwland, who played well in defence in his first game for the club, and Tim Langley, who returned from a knee reconstruction.

U16 (1) AFTER an excellent win against South Barwon by 8 goals in round 1 the firsts played Torquay and in a thriller that went down to the wire lost by 2 points, 8-11-59 to 8-9-57. A slow start against the wind saw us well down at quarter time with Zac Henderson a shining light up forward and when thrown onto the ball. A good 2nd quarter with the wind was driven by an excellent Dylan Moroney,

Ned Holland, and Alex Hackett continually driving us into attack where the strong marking and conversion from Myles Henderson and Ash Denneman brought us back on level terms at half time. Resolute defending from James Stirling, Oscar Doyle, and Nick Murphy saw Torquay’s lead at 3 quarter time at 4 goals and we came home with a wet sail. A set shot with 30 seconds left hit the top of the post and
in the end we ran out of time with the ball deep in our forward line. With many unavailabilities a positive was the depth in numbers we have to work with and develop as all the boys that came into the side played their roles and performed well. GoalkickersSean Dedini, Myles Henderson, and Ash Denneman all kicked 2, and Alex Hackett and Zac Henderson kicked 1 each. U16 (2) After an
excellent first up 20 goal flogging of Leopold to give coach Dave Williamson a first up win the seconds came up against a bigger, stronger side in GWSP and went down 13-15-93 to 7-3-45. Conor Guina was excellent all day, leading by example with his attack on the ball. Down back Jack Ness, Mitch Powell, and Jacob Lane all battled manfully against the odds. In the midfield Kyle King, Joe Luppino and
Curtly Balshaw worked hard all day, and Matt Gibbs, when thrown into the ruck, competed well around the ground. Goalkickers- Cameron Habgood and Matt Gibbs each kicked 2. With Josh Kehagias, Jackson Kent and Kyle King all contributing a goal. After a creditable first up loss the Ocean Grove/ Barwon Heads combination had a bye in round 2. By Richard West.

A good crowd turned out in the sunshine for Ocean Grove’s first home game of the season on Saturday
Gulls scavenge win over depleted Grubbers GRUBBERS lost to Anglesea by 17 points in a scrappy game at Ocean Grove Memorial Reserve. The home side was behind the eight ball before the game began with Ryan Baker going down with a possible broken ankle in the warm up. When his brother, Tim Baker, strained his hamstring 10 minutes into the first quarter, the Grubbers seemingly had it all to do with only two fit men on the bench. They started well with the first four scoring shots of the game but didn’t kick a goal until late in the first quarter. After an ugly high hit on an Ocean Grove player and an ensuing melee that saw two players from both sides sent off, Anglesea started hitting the score board. They were kicking with a three or four goal breeze. The game was evenly poised at quarter time even though Anglesea held a 16-point lead. The game’s intensity went up a notch in the second quarter and after four or five strong contests on the grandstand wing, Rowan O’Callaghan won a free kick and fifty metre penalty bringing him within range. He kicked truly.
By HAMISH BROOKS
Harry Foott, playing in the backline for the quarter, took a couple of marks on the last line of defence. The Grubbers ball movement improved as the quarter wore on. James McTaggart, acting captain in the absence of Jimmy Dalton who missed the game with a corked calf, capitalised on the cleaner possession with an impressive running goal from forty metres out on the far-side of the ground. It was an act he would replicate another two times for the game. Good forward pressure along with the cleaner ball handling saw the Grubbers go to the main break only two points in arrears. The premiership quarter started with a point to Anglesea. From the resultant kickout the Grubbers went end to end where Luke Sinnott kicked a fine running goal from an acute angle. The side looked up and about for the first ten minutes of the quarter. But Anglesea, desperate to capitalise on their quarter with the wind, strung together some
good passages of play. Four or five questionable umpiring decisions that could have gone either way but were all paid to Anglesea brought the crowd into the game. Anglesea put on four unanswered goals, the last of which took a turn Shane Warne would have been proud of, when it bounced through after a hurried snap. The Seagulls went to the threequarter time huddle with a 23 point lead. Grubbers coach Cameron McGregor implored his players to believe in each other and work hard to arrest the deficit. The team started the quarter like they would, reducing the margin to 11 points following another of McTaggart’s running goals. But Anglesea steadied and played some of their best footy of the match to run out 17 point victors. The final score was Ocean Grove 11.15-81 to Anglesea 14.14-98. While disappointed with the outcome, McGregor acknowledged that Anglesea were possibly a top three side this year. “It was a good, competitive game. It probably wasn’t the best spectacle, but I thought the guys
guttsed it out ok.” He lamented the loss of the Baker brothers but was reluctant to use it as an excuse. “I don’t think we ran out of legs. It probably hurt our structure a bit. Tim had a job to do for us and Ryan’s probably our best backman. He was third in the B and F last year.” The coach is hoping to have captain Jimmy Dalton back to take on Geelong Amateur away next week. “It’s another big game for us and will give us another idea of where we’re at. Like Anglesea, they’d be another side aiming for the top three.” Anglesea’s captain-coach Luke Primus was happy with the win but lamented the standard of the contest. “It was a pretty scrappy game and we’d be looking to play better throughout the year,” he said, after the match. “Ocean Grove are a good side though and they’re tough to beat out here. These are the sort of games we’ve got to pinch here and there to make the finals.” He also praised on-baller Ben Davis, who popped up in the last quarter with key touches and clinch goals.
