Town rallies after tragic accident TRIBUTES have continued to pour in for Ocean Grove youngster Brody Upston who died in tragic circumstances earlier this month.

Young Brody was seriously injured after the family car he was playing on accidentally rolled down the drive of his home in Henley Court and struck him. The five-year-old was flown from Shell Road reserve to the Royal Children’s Hospital by helicopter

but sadly his injuries were so bad a decision was made to turn off his life support machine. Last Wednesday hundreds of mourners including family and friends packed out Tuckers Chapel in Grovedale for an emotional service to say their final goodbyes to the playful youngster. After the funeral service, a convoy of cars departed Tuckers Chapel and headed to Highton Cemetery

where Brody’s body was laid to rest. A wake was later held at the Collendina Recreation Reserve rooms where locals paid their final respects. A special family fundraising day has since been organised by Collendina Sports Club on Sunday November 7 as a way of offering support to Brody’s devastated family. Full story page 3.

Cooking up a storm SURFSIDE students are doing some last minute jobs around their huge kitchen garden and outdoor learning area in readiness for the school’s Fresh Food Fair on Sunday October 31. The fair is the school’s major fundraiser and monies raised will

go towards information technology equipment.

This year the school will be able to showcase its own kitchen which was officially opened in May. Students will be cooking up a storm on the day of the fair with lots of great food. There will even be cooking classes for

children. Other attractions will include a Kids Zone, rides, motorcycle tours, Lions Club train, Tracey’s Animal Farm, an obstacle course, live music, an auction, worm farms and bags of seedlings for sale. The fair runs from 10am to 3pm at the school in John Dory Drive. Gold coin entry.

FLOOD FURY WATER gushes through an Ocean Grove garden during the recent floods. Some residents are calling for more to be done to upgrade local stormwater measures. Story page 7

EXTENSIVE aerial spraying has been carried out in the Lake Connewarre area in the last week to combat large mosquito growth concentrations. The latest spraying which took place last Tuesday October 12 had shown beneficial effects according to the City of Greater Geelong. “Council has been monitoring mosquito breeding areas around the Bellarine Peninsula and Geelong since early August,” City of Greater Geelong Manager Health and Local Laws, Steve Sodomaco said. “Cold temperatures in August and early September slowed mosquito breeding during this time. “Recent monitoring has shown significant mosquito levels in St Leonards, the Woodlands area of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads.” The Council carries out a mosquito control monitoring and treatment program throughout the coastal areas including the Bellarine Peninsula of the municipality each year.

Get behind fundraiser THE Collendina Sports Club will host a family day in honour of Ocean Grove toddler Brody Upston who died tragically this month. The day dubbed the ‘Brody Upston family day’ will run from 12pm to 5pm at the Collendina Recreation Reserve on Sunday November 7 in Minerva Close, Ocean Grove. The Cobras have a special connection with Brody’s family, mother Olivia worked as a cleaner at the club. The day will act as a fundraiser to help the Upston family cover the costs following Brody’s death. President of the Collendina Cobras Football Club Neil

“Wal” Walter and Cobras cricket stalwart Leigh Norquay helped put the fundraiser together to assist the Upston family with the financial costs. Wal, who attended last week’s funeral, has fond memories of little Brody and his bubbly and bright personality. Brody spent his earliest years living in Minerva Close, next door to the Collendina Recreation Reserve, before the family moved to their Henley Court home, also in Ocean Grove. “He was a great little kid,” Wal described. “He had an infectious personality, and he used to hang around the club and he would come down to

watch the boys play cricket and football. “I know Olivia (Brody’s mother) is extremely thankful for the support of the local community and getting this day organised.” The family day will have plenty of activities to keep everyone occupied, including a jumping castle, horse rides, animal farm, face painting, and an auction. There will also be a cricket match between both the ‘C’ Grade Collendina teams and the Lions Club will host a BBQ. Items auctioned on the day will include a framed picture of cricket legend Sir Donald Bradman.

Town rallies for family Continued from page 1. BRODY’S life was tragically cut short on Wednesday afternoon October 6. He was playing in the driveway around the family's Subaru Liberty with his nine-year-old brother Jacob, outside their Henley Court home when the car rolled down the driveway onto Brody, crushing him. An off-duty paramedic arrived at the scene, performing CPR on Brody until an ambulance arrived, which took the critically injured youngster to nearby Shell Road reserve. A Helicopter then arrived and subsequently took Brody to Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital. Olivia was unable to ride with her young son in the helicopter so she drove to Melbourne. Tragically his condition worsened and his life support was switched off the next morning. Police are continuing to prepare details for the coroner. Distraught mother Olivia Baker said the support of the Ocean Grove

community had been overwhelming. Despite the tragedy, she could not thank enough the support of local paramedics, firefighters, police and the Royal Children’s Hospital. “I’m in awe of the people of Ocean Grove,” Olivia said. “Ever since this tragic accident I still don’t know how to thank the community. “I would like to thank everyone involved on the night of the accident. “The support of the schools and Collendina Cobras junior football club and the cricket club has been fantastic.” She said Brody had treated the Collendina Recreation Reserve like another home. “The clubrooms and the ground at Collendina was like Brody’s second home – he used to love going there,” she said.

The Collendina Sports Club is holding a Special Fundraising Event to Help & Support Olivia Baker & Ben Upston, after the tragic & sudden loss of their son Brody. day in the life -

Good times, growing up in the Grove HOLLAND 1953: I remember as a young boy standing with my parents and brothers, in the very early hours of a cold and frosty January morning, waiting for a bus to take us to the Port of Rotterdam. Our family was moving to a far off country called Australia. We sailed on the migrant ship the “Fairsea” with 800 other passengers, arriving in Melbourne,

via Fremantle, on March 18th. 1953. Ocean Grove 1953: I have very vivid memories of the early years in Ocean Grove; my brothers John and Peter (deceased) walked to school every day, which in ’53 had 80 students - mostly migrant children from Poland, Germany, Russia, Holland and Hungary. Assimilation with Australian kids was not

difficult. There were no cultural boundaries and we learnt the language very quickly. In later years, 1959 to 1963 I attended East Geelong Technical School, before leaving and taking a job at the Geelong Advertiser. At first we lived in Wynndean Holiday Park, the surf beach and southern ocean at our doorstep. At night the smell of fish being smoked, rabbit stew and sauerkraut, red cabbage and apples being boiled was a delight to the nostrils of all. The soft sounds of harmonica’s and singing by people from far away lands would be heard at night. Life was good growing up in The Avenue, Ocean Grove, in the house mum and dad built; hand made bricks, washed up driftwood from the beach. Dad would carry everything he needed, cement, tools, timber on his motorcycle. My dad and his bricky mate John van Elst, donated their skills to build the original Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club clubhouse back in the ‘50s.

Their payment at the end of a weekends work was a box of longnecks which they shared with the volunteer surf club members, who helped during construction. Many great and lasting friendships began in The Avenue; Mac and Stephen “Chooka” Piec, Igor and Jimmy Saarinen, Martin Geerings, Peter and Helen Davis, Ray and Marg Menzies, whilst Reg Pearce, Stan Smith, Phil Green and the late Charlie Walton all played a part in my football and cricket careers. Mitchell Park Speedway was always a highlight as a young lad, just to watch the Stockcars being driven around the circuit, (now covered with housing in the Wilkinson Street area.) During the ‘60s the American “Hell Drivers” visited Ocean Grove and put on a great show at the speedway. My wife Heather and I bought a block of land in Fraser Cresent in 1969 from Stan Smith, built our home and still live here. Stan was working for the Real Estate firm known as Norman F. Guyett at that time, the

Guyett name being linked to Ocean Grove over a very long history. So our association with Ocean Grove has been on going for 57 years. During this time I have been involved with the Apex and Lions Clubs of Ocean Grove, The Barwon Heads Football & Netball Club and the Ocean Grove Traders Association. During my 20 year involvement with the BHF&NC, I served 5 terms as Secretary and 6 terms as President, the highlight being winning both senior and reserves Premierships in 1993. I also coached at a junior

level, Under 15 & Under 18’s at the club. I have also played cricket for Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and Wallington. The late Neil Gubbins, well known in Barwon Heads, guided me through some tough years as president of BHF&NC. In 1982 Heather and I started our own security business, Sylont Watching Service, we still carry on that business today. We enjoy travelling overseas and have been to Europe, Vietnam and Thailand, but our favorite holiday destination is Bali, which we visit each year. Heather and I and our

sons Damien and Simon enjoy living and working in Ocean Grove; there is nothing we would change as we love the Grove’s coastal character, the Terrace shopping strip, our great beach and the community we live in. 2008 marked 50 years since Ocean Grove was proclaimed a Township. The Lont family is very privileged to be part of Ocean Grove’s history. If you look at the wall opposite Coles Liquor land you will see the Lont family, in Dutch costume, 1958, pictured at Wynndean Holiday Park entrance, on the supermarket wall.

Bid to make Terrace junction safer ROADWORKS on the notorious Terrace and Presidents Avenue junction are aimed at making it safer. The junction, which has seen a serious crash almost every year in the last five and is also the scene of countless near misses, has finally been given the ‘Black Spot’ status. David Hannah, the City of Greater Geelong’s engineering manager, said that the intersection

of Presidents Avenue and The Terrace had been identified by the Federal Government Black Spot program. “Statistics show that four crashes have occurred at this intersection over the past five years,” he said. “A treatment was recommended to reduce the number of crashes and works have started on the construction of a splitter island and kerb extension.” “The splitter island

Network success Dear Editor I am writing in response to the article on the front of the Ocean Grove Voice (6-19th October 2010) entitled 'Plans for town gettogether- Park Picnic. The article states that ‘local clubs and groups are being encouraged to bring display and picture boards to the event that will pick up on the momentum generated by Celebrate 58 two years ago. That event brought local groups together in a way that hadn’t been seen in decades’. I am the secretary of OGAN, the Ocean Grove Arts Network. For the past three years we have organised the Ocean Grove Summer Festival. This event has been instrumental in promoting

Community Groups and allowing displays from very diverse members of the Ocean Grove community. The last Summer Festival was held in January 2010, and there were displays from (list of 14 groups). I think that OGAN and the hard working people involved in the Ocean Grove Festival and Tranquility Fair have the same aim, which is to bring the Ocean Grove Community together, and they have been successful in this. I look forward to the 'Picnic in the Park', I just want to point out that similar events have been organised over the past few years, and have been well received. Jennifer Carr Ocean Grove

Camp, well done Ocean Grove’s Neighbourhood Drop In about to set off on its four day camp to Queensland.

AS the youth liaison officer at the Bellarine Police Station, myself and Leading Senior Constable Steve Hutchison were lucky enough to be invited by Nicki Dunne to attend this years "Neighbourhood Centre Drop In" four day camp to Queensland. Our first highlight, which occurred even before boarding the plane, was seeing Gary Ablett at the airport. In making his decision to join the Gold Coast, I'm sure Gary listed both the positives and negatives, therefore I thought I'd do the same when reviewing our camp. Let’s start with the positives: 41 kids, aged

12 to 16, were given an opportunity to fly on an aeroplane, some for the first time; visiting both Dream World and Wet and Wild and seeing the sheer enjoyment the kids were having; allowing kids to develop leadership roles, encouraged by Nicki and her team; extending friendships, experiencing fun and laughter and being away from computers; hearing the caravan park owners go out of their way to point out how well the kids behaved; allowing the kids and the Police to interact outside a working relationship. As for the negatives, I can only offer one. Queensland’s catch cry of

being “Beautiful one day, perfect the next”, seemed miles away as it poured rain every day we were there. Whilst this may have limited the sales of sunburn cream, it certainly didn’t dampen the spirit of all those on camp who will remember their experience for life. Thanks again to Nicki and her crew, you are thoroughly deserving of your 2010 youth officer of the year award and your work is much appreciated by not only the kids and their parents, but the whole of the Bellarine community, well done. Chris Carnaby presents a cheque to Chris Hewitt of McConnell Dowell to pass to the families of the two bridge workers killed in a car crash earlier this year.

A LOCAL business that was touched by the recent tragedy where two bridge workers died on the Barwon Heads Road has made a donation to their families after completing work for the main contractors. Chris Carnaby and her business Looking Smart kitted out the McConnell Dowell team with the traditional ‘project jumper’ as the project nears its completition. Chris explained: “The car

A LOCAL Ocean Grove resident is demanding answers from council to seek a better drainage system after floods caused havoc and partly ruined her family’s holiday home, writes Mark Heenan. While Shirley Tisdale who has resided in another part of Ocean Grove for three years, does not live at the premises, she is the baby sitter of her daughter Raelene’s Epworth Street holiday home. Raelene who lives in Melbourne, frequently users the home during peak holiday periods. “It also happened six months ago (as in there was some flood damage around Easter and a long weekend in April) and Raelene and her husband were down then and they were able to save the place,” Shirley said. “When they are not here – I am baby-sitting the place.”

In the last fortnight the holiday home has been flooded twice due to the heavy rains in the wider Geelong region. The floods destroyed the carpet in the large south facing rumpus room, which also acts as a children’s entertainment room and has a billard table. Last week, the damaged carpet was ripped out by Raelene’s husband Stephen after floods swept the room twice in the space of seven days. Shirley claims she has called the City of Greater Geelong Council about the drainage issues in Epworth Street numerous times and no one had contacted her back. “I’m not shy with council,” Shirley admitted. “So I got straight on to council and I even went up to the council offices and yes they said they would see what they could do. “I have rang the council every

day since it happen, I have been abusive at one stage, and haven’t heard one single word from them about fixing the drainage in Epworth Street. “My daughter is not happy, she has six kids, would you be happy? “She is not like me, I’m like a dog with a bone, I get stuck into it and it is like lookout – And I won’t let up on it I am telling you.” Full-time resident June Walsh, who lives next door to Raelene’s holiday home, has been living in Epworth Street since 1975. June, who has double-bricked her house and built a garden bed to keep the water out, says this is not the first time her house has been affected by floods. “You sort of don’t expect (floods) to happen twice in a week,” June said. “We went to court against the Bellarine Shire (previous council) at VCAT (Victorian Civil and

Administrative Tribunal) some years ago to get the drainage sorted. “The big thing is the drains – we had a drainage guy to have a look and lifted the pit lids and that’s when we found out about the drains and it wasn’t working properly. “It’s been an on-going issue to get the drainage sorted, but no one has taken any notice from council. “Our biggest problem is the drainage at the front, until the (Council) fix the drainage it won’t change.” The Voice contacted the City of Geelong Council last week for comment. A spokesman said: “The Council is investigating the situation and looking into ways of improving drainage in the lower part of Epworth Street.” Your views: news@ oceangrovevoice.com.

Chooka’s 60, going on 20 IT was back to 1960s Ocean Grove for a night at Club Grove on Saturday. There were more Hawaiian shirts in one spot other than Honolulu. They were there to celebrate the 60th birthday of local legend Steve ‘Chooka’ Piec. They came from Queensland and further to

wish the boardrider well. They were also there to say ‘thanks’ to Chooka who has done heaps for the local community. Having been born in Geelong but lived in the Grove all his life, Chooka is very much what Ocean Grove is all about – a lifestyle. On Saturday night hundreds of

his friends, ex-Barwon Heads Football Club teammates, five decades of surfing pals and his family paid homage to Chooka and his positive outlook on life. Old cine footage showing Chooka and his pals cruising the waves – and the waterfalls – amid a California-feel 1960s Ocean Grove reinforced the atmosphere

in Club Grove’s new Sports Bar. During the night Chooka was presented with a signed surfboard by Brian Tucker of SOUL Longboard Club, Adding further to his legendary status, Chooka later edged onto a longboard and surfed about the crowd as Paul Carrigg strummed out a wave-riding rhythm.

Author Robert Newton with students at the Bellarine Ocean Grove campus.

Writers workshop BUDDYING young writers were treated to a talk and a workshop given by Melbourne author Robert Newton at the Bellarine Ocean Grove campus last week. The year seven and eight students have been enthusiastically studying

Newton’s The Runner and the Black Dog Gang and lapped up the chance to hear how he develops the characters that are central to his stories. Later the students worked on developing their own characters.

Musical college

Over 120 students from the Bellarine campus of Christian College performed in the school's Annual Music Evening at Costa Hall on Thursday, October 14. The Bellarine students, from Grade Prep to Year 9, performed in various ensembles including, choirs, strings orchestras, concert and stage bands, and a ceilidh band. Ensembles from the Belmont, Highton and Senior campuses also took part in the night, showcasing the wide array of talent and renowned musical expertise of the College. Audiences were thoroughly entertained by the award winning groups.

WITH the kids tucked up tight it was time for the mums and dads to come out and play at the Ocean Grove Pre-school’s trivia fundraiser on Friday night. Wild weather didn’t deter about 100 parents, teachers and friends who gathered at the Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club to test their general knowledge and raise money for the kindergarten through a

silent auction. Sporting memorabilia caused the biggest bidding wars with a signed Ricky Ponting cricket bat fetching the highest price for the evening. Meanwhile the ladies’ interests were piqued by a $500 Botox voucher from a local plastic surgeon. The evening’s organisers, Jenny Dries and Lisa Bowers, said it was

great to see community spirit alive and well in Ocean Grove. “It was a great fun night and very successful,” Mrs Dries said. “We really appreciate the Surf Club and the great local and surrounding businesses for all the support and donations.” Mrs Dries said the night had raised nearly $5,000 for the Ocean Grove Pre-school.

Arthur and Alice Tzaninis are the proud new owners of Food for Thought. The newly married couple took over from the previous owners on the 20th of September this year and are already looking to take the business to a new level! They will be revamping the store, as well as some new inclusions with new fine foods, deli items and superior quality fruit and veggies soon to arrive. It was a big decision for Arthur to “down tools” from his carpentry position, but the lure of keeping quality food in the family proved too great, with his parents owning Trident Fish Bar in Ocean Grove and his brother Fonda running Trident Fish Bar in Queenscliff.

Ocean Grove Pizza

Ocean Grove Pizza & Pasta is a locally owned and operated business that has been operating for 22 years. What started as a small takeaway / delivery business in the Terrace, has over the last few years expanded to a fully licenced restaurant with an expansive menu that caters for all ages. Alfresco dining and private function bookings are just a couple of things we offer. Tuesday and Wednesday nights are now Steak and Parmi nights, which have proven to be very popular with locals. Down at the Shell Rd complex there is a take-away / delivery store which as a whole has been a very welcome move. Both stores offer exactly the same take away menu, so you wont be disappointed no matter which part of town you live in. Deliveries to Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads, Wallington, Pt. Lonsdale and Queenscliff are availiable every night of the year except Xmas day.

Determined young fundraisers WHILE most 12 year olds are using their pocket money on lollies, magazines and the latest iPod, two Ocean Grove girls are using theirs to raise money for Cancer Victoria. Tahlea White and Georgia Ronchi have both lost family members to cancer and after hearing the statistics of Australian’s who are killed by the disease, decided to do something about it. Tahlea said she had done some fundraising before but not independently and at this level. “One in eight people die from cancer,” Tahlea said. “So one night when I was sleeping and I thought I want to raise money for cancer.” The Bellarine Secondary College and Surfside Primary School students weren’t modest in their fundraising target. “We want to raise $10,000,”said Tahlea. Tahlea’s mum Tanya said she suggested

a lower target but was very proud of the challenge they have set themselves. “I was surprised when she said she wanted to do it, she’s a very determined girl.” The best friends worked together to save their pocket money and have T-shirts, hats, signs and magnets made up promoting their cause. Their slogan is Give Hope..Donate, and their fundraising plans include tin rattling, jellybean guessing, casual dress days at school and the possibility of a fundraiser much like the Family Fun Day held on June 20. The girls are hoping local businesses are willing to put collection tins in their stores and help their cause. The fundraising will continue until August 2011 with any money going to Cancer Victoria who will use the money for research and helping families who have lost family members to cancer. FUNDRAISERS: Tahlea and Georgia.

The art of understanding OCEAN Grove’s Mood Support Group meets every Thursday morning at the Neighbourhood Centre. They talk and listen to each other’s stories and problems and offer support and solutions. The group epitomises the idea behind R U OK? day held on October 7, an initiative to help reduce suicide numbers by encouraging people to start discussion with those around them. Group member Mike Griffiths said that they use every one of their weekly meetings as an R U OK? day. “The group is about seeing if everyone is ok,” he said. Meriel Derrick said the day is important for people suffering from mental illness as it’s about listening to the answer. “People always ask ‘how are you?’ but they don’t listen to the answer, we really listen,” she said. Diana Pinnow has run the group since it began four years ago and said with one in five people suffering from a mental illness in the community, their group is a local way

to help people cope. At the time it started, it was the only group like it on the Bellarine Peninsula.

“It’s a community service, it reaps rewards for people,” she said. The group regularly has guest speakers and

explores different ways to cope with their mental illnesses including art, music therapy and enjoying the company of

their mascot dog, Lucy. The latest activity was for everyone to draw Mandalas, colourful Tibetan circles. They decorate the meeting room and whilst the session was taking place several members pulled out the textas and paper and drew whilst they talked. Diana and the group are all very passionate about the removal of stigma in the community towards mental illness “Being amongst people that understand makes it a bit easier,” Kevin Williamson said. “It’s a shame that more people aren’t taking advantage of the group,” added Diana. The mood support group meets every Thursday at 10am during the school term at the Neighbourhood Centre for a gold coin donation. •For more information go to www.ruokday.com. au. Ocean Grove’s Bryan Eaton and Amanda Rector will star in the Peninsula Players last show this month.

Grovers star in farewell recital group show Two Ocean Grove actors Bryan Eaton and Amanda Rector are performing in Peninsula Player’s last show. For a quarter of a century since its founding by Rhena King in 1985, Peninsula Players has entertained the people of Drysdale and the Bellarine Peninsula with live theatre often chosen to bring a smile to the faces of their invariably appreciative audiences. More than 200 people have worked together to bring some 80 plays to life on the stage of the Community Hall in Drysdale during that time. A number of reasons have contributed to the demise of PP, including the growing difficulty of casting plays and the increasing age of the PP stalwarts on whose shoulders fall the plethora of often physically demanding jobs associated

with putting on a production. In choosing their final show, PP has found in A Month of Sundays, a wistful, gentle comedy that reflects their current status that is, coming to terms with ageing. The play was written by Bob Larbey, the writer of numerous British television series, including As Time Goes By and The Good Life. The play is set in a rest home for the aged, and revolves around two residents, Cooper (Bryan Eaton), who has voluntarily left his family to avoid the indignity of depending on them, and his friend Aylott (Russell Campbell), who's slowly drifting into senility. While there are strict rules imposed on residents, Cooper refuses to fall into passivity. He flirts constantly with Nurse

Wilson (Amanda Rector) and has verbal jousts with the cleaning lady Mrs Baker (Lee Foyster). Both Cooper and Alyott handle the difficulties of growing old and in Cooper’s case, the painful ritual of family visits from daughter Julia (Meryl Friend) and son-in-law Peter (Keith Lowe). Cooper and Aylott face empty condescension with dignity, humour and wit. A Month of Sundays will lift the spirits and leave you with a warm feeling that reinforces our humanity. The play can be seen from Wednesday October 27 to Saturday October 30 at 8pm at the Community Hall, Drysdale and is directed by Tony Wright. For tickets please call Rhena King on 5251 2431.

MARIA Forde will headline the Celtic Women in Song night at The Ocean Grove Hotel this Friday October 22. Irish-Australian Forde will be supported by Jill Meehan, Michelle Meehan and Myra McCrae & Band. Forde has always straddled both sides of her heritage in her songwriting. Incorporating the sweet melodies, that are the trademark of the Irish musical heritage, with observations of Australia, along with her personal experiences, Maria has blossomed into one of Australia’s premier songwriters. Her first album “Will You Dance With Me?” - features the title song, written for a friend’s wedding, that has become a theme for weddings, in Australia and internationally, by Maria’s original and various cover versions. The trend, in Maria’s writing, to incorporate both her Irish origins and Australian sensibilities, are heralded by

“Waltzing Matilda, My Darling” - a song about the torn spirits of the immigrant to both their country of birth and their adopted land, Australia. Her sophomore release, “Dark Island” like the title, exhibited noir attitudes, as Maria broached topics such as child abuse, the innocence of childhood, and family relationships. The next 3 albums - “Follow The Call”, “Rough Diamond” and “Next” all continued the themes, laid down on her first two albums, although her craft always progressed with each re-cording. Her most recent album, “Little Black Rose” bears testament to Maria’s endless quest to improve her musicianship, her songwriting craft and the desire to communicate to the listener. Doors open at 6pm, grab your tickets at the door ($18), or book online ($15) @ www.webtickets.com.au. Contact the Ocean Grove Hotel for dinner reservations on 5255 1122

Trucker keeps cool under pressure

Senior constable Chris Anderson on the scene of The Parade crash.

A QUICK-thinking truck driver averted a serious crash on The Parade earlier this month after a car emerged in front of him and continued across to Eggleston Avenue. The truck driver was heading east along the Parade at about 1pm on October 7 when the Nissan Maxima began to cross his path. With the driver of a four-wheel drive parked on the opposite junction potentially in the firing line of an oversteer the truck driver’s options were limited. He hit his breaks, managed to miss the Nissan driver and took out the front end of the waiting Toyota. The Toyota’s driver Paul Cover praised the actions of the truck driver who managed to keep control of his vehicle. Paul had seen what was about to happen and tried to slam the car into reverse before the impact. Bellarine Police later attended the scene and took the details of those involved and those of the driver of the Maxima who Skid marks show the truck’s line. was on his way to a funeral at the time.

Locals with key to reception issue TWO Ocean Grove residents have come forward to help locals with their internet and mobile reception issues. After the story we ran in the last edition of The Voice (Net Loss, Ocean Grove Voice, Sept 22-Oct 5) Steven Stephanides and Gerry Sanderson both contacted us to give us expert solutions. Steven runs online business antennashop.com.au which specialises in external antennas to help boost the signal finding strength of peoples mobile internet services. “It's a huge issue for people in

regional towns,” he said. Steven said that for many people having ADSL internet, which is a fixed cable internet line, installed isn't feasible and can blow out to thousands of dollars. “For a lot of people wireless is their only option,” he said. Steven has helped provide antenna boosters to help flying doctors and dentists when they visit remote

communities which gives hope to Ocean Grove residents trying to access broadband signal. “The stronger the signal, the faster the broadband,” he said. He also said that the networks are set to improve in the future due to the competitive market of providing data downloads to internet and new mobile phones. “All the networks are working really really hard to provide a fast service,” he said. Collendina resident Gerry Sanderson has worked for Telstra for 34 years and said that after customer

feedback, Telstra has helped to improve Ocean Grove's Next G signal over the last 18 months. “We installed sites at Collendina Football Club, we did one at Wallington road and Thirteenth Beach which points back to Ocean Grove,” Gerry said. The Next G signal caters for newer mobile phones which Gerry said won't improve older phones that can only access the older 2G system. Gerry lives in the lower lying area of Collendina and said that there is an improved difference in the signal strength he used to receive and the

one he has now after the new sites had been installed. “I used to drop calls in Collendina and now I don't drop them at all, it's a better signal strength,” he said. Gerry also said that with Telstra there is a 10 day cooling off period for people who buy mobile broadband and find they cannot use it where they live and they encourage customers to contact them with any problems they have. “We expect them to contact us so we can hlep resolve the issue,” he said. Art start in new bank OCEAN Grove’s Westpac team celebrated their move to new premises with an art show and auction celebrating ‘things we love’ about the town. The Westpac ‘100 Things We Love about Ocean Grove’ Mobile Art Studio visited in Ocean Grove Main Beach on Saturday October 9 where locals had the chance to nominate, create or capture via art, photography or poetry things that characterise their home town. A group of professional artists were then recruited by Westpac to create the exhibition

OCEAN GROVE QUALITY MEATS Colin and Allison Smith and family are the proud new owners of Ocean Grove Quality Meats, the only independent butcher shop in The Terrace. Bec and Hayden, their daughter and son are also very excited to be a part of the butchers shop business. Col and Ally named the butcher shop Ocean Grove Quality Meats as they are committed towards the community and are very family orientated. Col originates from Birchip in the Mallee and then moved to Bendigo to complete his butchers apprenticeship. He has managed both large and small butcher shops over his 30 years of experience in butchering, providing all customers with his caring and individual quality customer service. Ally has been in the education department for over 10 years, working at the Catholic College in Bendigo for over 6 years. But previous to that had been in retail for 15 years. Their fantastic staff Matty, Neil, Jimmy and Lockie will continue to guide them with their local customer knowledge and years of expertise in Butchering within Ocean Grove. All of the staff have been very helpful and supportive and Col and Ally would like to thank them for their happy, friendly welcome they have showed them since starting. They will continue the Sausage Legend Recipe handed down by Craig Henderson to Col and Ally; the recipe which is synonymous with the now Ocean Grove Quality Meats. They also have welcomed some new lines into the “mix” including Butterflied Leg of Lamb, a variety of stir fry, and Boned & Rolled Seasoned Chicken to name a few. All their top quality meat suppliers of their products are guaranteed and will be supplying Ocean Grove Quality Meats with some of the finest natural, free range meats going around! Moving from Bendigo, they are all looking forward to living in the Ocean Grove and have already met some of the wonderful people here in just a few short weeks. Col, Ally and family would like to thank the community of Ocean Grove for their friendly, warm welcome and look forward to seeing them in their shop soon!

AN Ocean Grove woman has added another piece of the puzzle to the history of the Dare Street home built around two railway carriages, writes Carly Helweg. Val Firmin and her family rented the house for their holidays from 1961 until 1965. She said that between the families there were five boys who loved sleeping in the carriages at night. “We thought it was great for the boys, they thought it was terrific,” she said. The Firmins and their friends both came down to Ocean Grove from Melbourne and rented the house through a local holiday rentals agency

over January. Val described the house at the time as old fashioned with an outdoor toilet which was later moved inside with further renovations. Although she never met the owner at the time, Val remembers being told it was an elderly man who didn’t live in the house but just used it as a holiday house. She also recalls the name ‘Jones’ in association with the rental agent. If anyone else has memories of the property or its previous owners, contact us at journo@oceangrovevoice.com or call 5255 3233.

Melissa King attracted more than 100 listeners to her talk at Van Loon’s.

Potting style guide LOCAL gardening enthusiasts got an up close and personal account of how to grow their own vegetables earlier this month, writes Mark Heenan. Well-known TV personality Melissa King and fellow guest speaker Glenn Brown hosted a two-day gardening workshop called ‘Grow Your Own vegetables - Gala weekend’ at Van Loon’s Nursery in Wallington. Great crowds turned out to hear both guest speakers on the Saturday and Sunday, with almost 100 people on hand to observe Melissa King’s

presentation on the Saturday. King spoke about using a good quality potting mix when working with vegies and herbs in pots. Her design tip for selecting pots was to keep to one style of pot and purchase the same style in different sizes. Meanwhile, Brown’s talk on the Sunday focused on getting the most out of your tomatoes and how to avoid diseases by rotating crops and limiting watering to before 3pm. “The talks were informative and engaging, the audience (were) able to ask lots of

questions from growing chokos to when to feed lemon trees,” Van Loon’s Nursery Co-owner and Manager Matthew Hart said. “The atmosphere over the weekend was energised with lots of projects being wheeled out after gaining that little bit of extra knowledge. “It’s a weekend we’ll definitely repeat next Spring.” King who hosts a gardening segment on Channel Ten’s morning show ‘The Circle’, said she was overwhelmed with the variety of plants and gardens at Van Loon’s Nursery.

TV personality Melissa King giving her presentation at Van Loon’s on potting mix and selecting pots.

The popular TV presenter worked on ABC’s Gardening Australia program from 2002 til 2007. “It was a great day they really do it well down at Van Loon’s – they have one of the best gardens down there,” King told

the Ocean Grove Voice last week. “It’s a beautiful nursery, the quality of plants and advice you get is great. “I have visited the area and the nursery a few times before – there is so much to choose from. “

Locals enjoy personal concert

Above and right, Helen Mottee performing in Ocean Grove.

TWENTY-five locals were treated to an inspiring private music performance earlier this month. Local Lyn Mulligan opened her home for a sunny afternoon performance from Australian award winning singer songwriter Helen Mottee. Helen packed up her life, husband and two children to move to Hong Kong three and a half years ago to dedicate her life to the not-for-profit organisation Crossroads. Crossroads helps people in need around the world by shipping donated items,

promoting free trade and supporting the building of hospitals and schools. People involved in the organisation are volunteers and don’t receive a salary. Helen takes the regular opportunity to visit some of the areas Crossroads delivers their containers to and has travelled to many war-torn areas like Afghanistan, Burma and parts of Africa. She has heard and

experienced the horror of humanity and translates these experiences into song to deliver powerful messages to her audiences. Many audience members last Wednesday were moved to tears after listening to Helen's music. “I don't believe in the music industry hype, it’s not about promoting, I love the message,” she said. Helen came back to Australia for a three month rest which has now turned into an impromptu tour, playing for school and university groups and even performing for the

Australian Parliament. “For me this totally reenergizes me for me to do something like this," she said. “(Coming to Ocean Grove) will be another highlight of the whole trip, it’s been fantastic.” For someone who has seen the difficulties so many people face on a daily basis in places like Afghanistan, is it hard for Helen to come back to Australia and be surrounded by the comforts of a western society? “Only on a very basic level but no, this trip actually has shown me, I’ve been totally inspired by all the people

and young people and older people, all sorts of people doing amazing things for their community,” she said. “It’s not about culture its about individuals within the culture.” Despite the ‘nasty truths’ contained in her music, Helen doesn’t sing them to depress people, but instead wants to educate and use her art as advocacy to speak for the voiceless. “We can all either be apathetic or instruments of good and proactive in the way we address issues.“ And despite the many

messages that Helen uses to inspire her audience, her advice to people is...don’t believe the lie that you as an individual can’t make a difference to someone.” Proceeds for Helen's concert in Ocean Grove went towards the Hotham Mission Asylum Seeker Project. Helen is passionate about giving and telling people stories from her travels and despite some not wanting to hear about the atrocities occurring in the world, Helen said there is always hope.

BATTLE FOR SURVIVAL: A young plover.

which is a simple scrape in the ground away from ground cover. Both sexes also incubate the eggs and care for the young birds. The young birds are born with a full covering of down feathers and are able to leave the nest and feed themselves a few hours after hatching. They feed on insects and worms. Adult Masked Lapwings will dive on the threats to their chicks, or act as though they have a broken wing in an attempt to lure the threat

away from the nest. They frantically swoop around to protect their offspring, and look very scary doing so, but unlike magpies they rarely cause injury. There is a myth of a plover attacking with its spur on the upperside of the wing, however if this was the case, any attempt to use it in flight at speed would most surely result in physical injury to the bird. Masked Lapwings are protected under state legislation and any interference with the

bird, its nest or eggs is not permitted. Methods of coping with swooping Plovers include: •If possible, try to avoid the area in which the birds are swooping. •If possible try to keep lawn mown to a reasonable height to prevent birds foraging and nesting. This may encourage the birds to go elsewhere. •Avoid harassing the bird as this may only make it defensive and more likely to continue its defensive

BARWON COAST

Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. Maintenance during winter When the level of activity within the coastal reserves is at its lowest the opportunity is provided to undertake a range of maintenance activities and upgrades. Currently we are working on improving the beach access at 8W (Alderbaran Rd, Collendina) by constructing an additional section of steps across the top of the dunes replacing the old worn log and chain matting. This work should be completed by the end of October We have installed new drinking fountains at several locations around the coast and to date have installed fountain at the playground in Flinders Parade, Barwon Heads; at the BBQ’s on the Barwon Heads river foreshore near the main jetty and the Ocean Grove Main Beach access near the Dunes cafe. With the continual movement of sand along the beaches we experience short term erosion at various locations. It is therefore very important not to accelerate erosion of the dunes by climbing up the unfenced sections of the dune face or running up and down the dune face for your exercise routine. Mother nature reminded us that she is still in charge, when dumping 40mm of rain overnight recently resulting in several major erosion incidents including the undermining of the stairs at Hodgson St which were temporarily closed prior to repairs. Works on the Ocean Grove Spit You may have noticed a great deal of activity on the river side of the Ocean Grove Spit associated with the construction of the next stage of Barwon Water’s sewer main replacement program from Pt Lonsdale thru to Black Rock. Two projects are currently being undertaken - one being the boring under the Barwon River to take the new sewer main from Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads and the other being construction of a new sewer main thru the Spit from the south end of the Riverview Family Caravan Park to the point when the river boring project will commence.

behaviour. •Wear a hat or carry an umbrella when swooping behaviour is occurring. Unlike butcherbirds or magpies a plover isn’t likely to make contact under an umbrella. Kindness is the best policy: be mindful of the struggle for survival for birds that nest on the ground! We should learn to share our habitat, and be relieved that we don't have such a struggle for survival every day. By Jennifer Carr

I HAVE been watching a pair of Masked Lapwings or Masked Plovers rear two chicks over the past month. Like them or hate them, you have to admire the efforts of the Plovers to protect their chicks. They have nested on one of the few spare blocks left in our street, and have had to contend with dogs, cats, people playing footy on the spare block on grand final weekend, mowers, other birds, and me annoying them with my camera! I have observed them closely, and have been surprised by how far they take their chicks away from the block- one day I found them around the corner and across the busy road. I have heard a lot of screeching noise from the block when dogs and cats have been around, and seen them frenetically swooping to protect their chicks. Every day is a battle just for survival. The chicks are not yet flying so their quest for survival is far from over. Both male and female Masked Lapwings share the building of the nest,

Whilst the construction programs continue over the next couple of months there will be considerable interruption to those walking, cycling along the trails thru the Spit as we need to keep those users away from the construction works. Two sections of temporary trail diversions have been constructed and signage installed and we ask for everyone’s understanding that these essential works need to be undertaken and the temporary pathways have been constructed for everyone’s safety. The contractors are required to reinstate the area prior to the summer camping season Centre Toilet Block, Ocean Grove – Update Despite the difficult weather conditions work is proceeding apace at the site of the new $1m amenity block project at the Ocean Grove Main Beach As previously advised this is our largest ever self funded project with the redevelopment of the Ocean Grove Main Beach amenity block. This project is the last major component of the Ocean Grove Main beach redevelopment project we commenced a decade ago starting with the relocation of the Surf Beach Road to the back of the coastal reserve, improving beach access safety for all visitors. In recent weeks the building has really taken shape with the roof installation, block work walls laid and rendered and the feature timber poles on the beach side of the building erected. Current works include the construction of retaining walls, access ramps including one constructed at the appropriate grade to suit persons of all abilities. The major task of laying the concrete hard standing around the facility has commenced featuring both coloured concrete and exposed aggregate concrete. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager Barwon Coast, Ewing Blyth Drive, Barwon Heads office@barwoncoast.com.au

Tom’s a Foott taller IF it is height the Ocean Grove Football Club needs for 2011 then look no further than Tom Foott. The 21-year-old who stands at more than 195cm is the latest recruit to join the Grubbers next season. He joins playing assistant Shane Jack and ball magnet Ben Ricardo in 2011 at Ocean Grove. Foott is the brother of Grubbers player Harrison, who was announced as Rookie of the Year award winner at this year’s Bellarine Football League Grand Final. The former top line swimmer and basketballer is a relative newcomer to the sport only taking up football at the age of 19. In 2010, Foott played in an A-Grade reserves premiership with VAFA (Victorian Amateur Football League) club University Blues. Foott, who grew up in the Ocean Grove area as a youngster, played a key role in the ruck and was named as second best player in the University Blues thrilling one-point grand final win over De La Salle on September 19. “We were 24 points down with eight minutes to go and we snatched the win and kicked five goals in the end – It was a massive feeling to come back and win like that,” said Foott who played 19 matches with the University Blues in 2010. He is looking forward to the challenge of mixing it with BFL’s elite players in 2011. “I can’t wait to come down and play,” he said. “I have been watching a couple games in 2010 and watching my brother (Harrison play). “I have played ruck for the majority of my football career, in the ruck you are always in the

play and you are always trying to get your hands on the footy.” Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor said Foott will be a valuable inclusion for the Grubbers next year after the club lacked a key quality tall in 2010. This season the Grubbers tried many options in the ruck with undersized quartet Ben Wilkinson, Harrison Foott, Tom McManus and Shaun Maloney all competing in the position. “Tom is not skinny, he is a good

size,” McGregor said. “He may not just play in the ruck, he could also go forward.” “Tom was a super basketballer and took up swimming at a younger age and he will hopefully fit in well.” Ocean Grove captain James Dalton, who has played senior footy at the Grubbers for more than 10 years, said a tall ruck would benefit the midfield playing group enormously. “It will be brilliant to have a

tap ruckman - We have not had a genuine ruckman for some years now,” Dalton said. Outside of football, Foott, who resides in Carlton, is studying an engineering degree at the Victorian University Footscray campus. His family still lives in Ocean Grove and he regularly commutes back from Melbourne to the Bellarine Peninsula to work with his father’s plastics recycling business every Friday.

Grove by one run OCEAN Grove kicked off their A-Grade season with a three wicket win over neighbouring rival Wallington in the opening round of Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association matches. The Grubbers restricted the Wallabies, who won the toss and batted first, to nine for 92 from their 40 overs in the one-day match. Ocean Grove bowler Michael Kennedy was the chief destroyer with the ball taking 4/12 from

his eight overs. New ball opening pair Rhys Zanoni and Grubber coach Lucas Cameron both took one wicket a piece. Calvin O’Brien (27) and Wallington captain Darren Cameron (16) were the only ones to provide any resistance with the bat. In reply Ocean Grove

won with four overs to spare and finished 7 for 93 in the 36th over. Adam Spiby top-scored with 28 batting at number four for Ocean Grove. “Good to get the first win out of the way,” Ocean Grove coach Lucas Cameron said after the match. “We should have got the runs with only three wickets though. “On the positive side there’s five sides that didn’t win in the first round.”

AWASH AND NOT EVEN WAVES A WATER restrictions sign hovers above the flooded Memorial Ground cricket oval on Saturday afternoon. But instead of the sound of leather on willow the ovals were washed out due to overnight rains. It was the same story for the rest of sport across the sports mad town. Even the surfiers were hit. Both SOUL and 13th Beach Boardriders had competitions planned but messy onshore conditions saw to it that they were called off.

40-OVER PLAN

THE Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association A-Grade match between Ocean Grove and Collendina will be reduced to a 40 over per side one-day fixture this Saturday. All two-day fixtures in the BPCA A, B and C grades were cancelled due to the wet weather last Saturday. Matches in the D-Grade one-day

competition were also abandoned because of rain. BPCA Secretary Daryl Burns said while the Ocean Grove Recreation Reserve ground was wet in parts, he indicated the hard-wicket was too

damp for any play. “The Ocean Grove ground was okay in parts, while obviously wet, the wicket was saturated with water and that was going to cause us a few problems,” Burns said. “As it turned out it was probably a good decision any way because there was a heap of rain on the Saturday

afternoon that would have wrecked everything. “We did a ground inspection on the Saturday morning, we had contact with Anglesea and Jan Juc about their grounds which were under water as was the Barrabool ground. “We also looked throughout the Bellarine area including the Ocean

Grove and Barwon Heads grounds and they were unplayable as well.” In other A-Grade matches when Round 2 resumes this Saturday, Wallington travels to Portarlington searching for their first win of the season, Barwon Heads hosts Jan Juc, Drysdale plays Barrabool and Queenscliff travels to Newcomb.
