OCEAN Grove Community Association held their 2010 Annual General Meeting on April 7 with Cr Jan Farrell as guest speaker, writes Carly Helweg. The association which was previously known as Ocean Grove & District Association with its reelected committee, discussed achievements from 2009 and plans for the coming year. Chairperson for 2010, John Fendyk who is taking over the role from Michael Harbour spoke of the Bellarine Aquatic Centre as a proud achievement from 200809 period, thanking Cr Farrell and the City of Greater Geelong for
their support. Ever-present traffic issues around the town area are again high on the agenda for 2010 with the Tuckfield Street and Marlin Drive intersection identified as a problem area. A traffic study conducted by VicRoads found traffic lights are warranted to slow traffic at the intersection with the next step approaching State Government for the $750,000 funding needed for the project. The committee has been successful in reducing the speed limit along Wallington Road between Lake Avenue and
Thacker Street from 80kph to 60kph. Geelong City Council has further acknowledged the need for a left hand turning lane on Wallington Road for motorists turning into Thacker Street and will be seeking formal approval from VicRoads over the coming months. OGCA are seeking new members and a greater involvement from the community in its meetings and forums. For further information on OGCA and to find out how to become a member visit their website at www.ogca.com.au.

Crossing THE Presidents Avenue pedestrian crossing was addressed at the Ocean Grove Community Association meeting last week with Cllr Jan Farrell confirming the idea was still on the agenda. The proposed crossing will be positioned between The Avenue and The Parade giving pedestrians safe access to the library, community health centre and Ocean Plaza. City of Greater Geelong Manager of Engineering Services David Hannah said an application seeking consent for the crossing had been sent to VicRoads. “VicRoads has indicated in-principle support for the crossing and has asked the City to send further detailed design layouts,” he said. “It is anticipated that approvals will be received in time to have the crossing constructed early in the financial year.”

Who will pledge first? A FUNDING promise from state government election candidates is needed for the proposed Shell Road sport centre to go ahead within the next four years. Guest speaker Jan Farrell from City of Greater Geelong spoke about the plans at the Ocean Grove Community Association’s Annual General Meeting this month. She said the proposed budget for the project is about $4 million with the bulk of the funding required from state and federal governments to go ahead. The City of Greater Geelong have budgeted $250,000 towards the project with remaining funds to
come from the sale of the Draper Street netball courts. However Cr Farrell warned that if the money didn’t come through from the governments, the City wouldn’t be able to put up the entire amount. “If we don’t get it as an election promise we’re going to struggle,” she said. Representative for Corangamite, Darren Cheeseman said to the Ocean Grove Voice in May 2009 that the Shell Road was a top sporting priority. “This is the number one sporting project in
my seat by a country mile,” he said. Mr. Cheeseman had also said that if the sporting community in Ocean Grove could come up with a united masterplan then he would put in for Federal funding. Without funding for the entire project the City’s $250,000 would instead be put towards a Memorial Reserve upgrade including lights for night games and improved club rooms. Cr Farrell said that if enough people from the community get behind the project it would be easier to target the state and fed governments for the funding. “We need to make sure there’s lots of votes in this,” she said.

GROVE, Wallington and Mannerin CFA joined Sustainability and Environment Victoria and Parks Victoria teams in the latest attempt to achieve a controlled burn at Ocean Grove Nature Reserve on Sunday. Amid conditions as close as perfect as can be expected, teams met up for intensive briefings on the south eastern boundary of the site. Parks Victoria were careful to point out the need to create a necessary ‘hot burn’ while atttempting to protect native species such as the Bellarine Yellow Gum. About 24ha is planned to be burned with the aim of restoring the over dense woodland to its natural open woodland state. The teams were hindered in some ways by the lack of wind during the day but the teams reported better success than recent attempts. The burn was continuing over Sustainability Victoria teams lit the burn while CFA contained it. night as the Voice went to press.

ANZAC in the Grove AS Ocean Grove RSL prepares to stage its ANZAC services this Sunday, locals have been openly welcomed to come along and be involved. Ocean Grove ANZAC Day begins at 6.15am with the dawn service at the cenotaph. Hundreds have attended this early service and organisers are braced for a repeat attendance. A piper will play at the Dawn Service. After the service Rotary traditionally puts on a breakfast at the Neighbourhood Centre. The main service is at 11am
and follows the parade. Those in the parade are asked to assemble in Presidents Avenue at 10.30am and begin marching at 10.45am. Despite some national controversy about who should take part in the parades, subbranch secretary David Gilroy said that anyone can be involved providing they respect the designated procession order. “We do not have any preconceived ideas about who should be on the march. We welcome anyone that wishes to join in. Unlike the one in Melbourne we are not
constrained by size. We do (however) have an order of the parade. “Veterans go first followed by the affiliated groups like the police and fire service, the schools and then the public. “ Mr Gilroy added that the family of members are welcome to join them on the parade. There will also be an Anzac Day collection. Scouts will be accompanied by RSL members making collections at the start of the procession, en route and at the service. Scouts will also be the standard
ywear (NB-2-plu Bab s)
bearers. Michael Lewis, general manager of Club Grove and an RSL member, will give a talk about ANZAC Day and youth. Everyone is welcome to join RSL members at Club Grove for refreshments after the service. Bellarine Secondary College school captains Ben Sanders and Alison Fane will share reading the Requiem at the ceremony. There will be chairs for the elderly and disabled, more able members of the public are asked to respect this.

State View $646,000 Funding boost to help seniors live at home As Minister for Senior Victorians, I was pleased to announce that seniors in the Geelong and Bellarine electorates will receive an extra 7,400 hours of care and support thanks to a $646,000 funding boost from the Commonwealth and State Government. The funding boost will enable older Victorians and people with a disability to continue living at home and remain connected with their local community. It will help those who want to remain independent in their own homes and communities, close to friends and family do so for as long as possible. Home and Community Care (HACC) services provide the practical assistance that many older Australians need to complete day-to-day tasks. The program helps older people, people with a disability and their carers by providing services such as help with home maintenance and modification, transport, meals, personal care and allied health and nursing care. Through this new funding, the Geelong and Bellarine electorates will receive more than 7,400 extra hours of assistance and support.
Advisory signs will be placed in the areas where bait enclosures are located. The bait enclosures will usually be located behind fence lines and off from the side of pathways. Please ensure your pet is kept away from the bait enclosures, while on pathways dogs should be controlled on a leash.
ANZAC DAY Anzac Day is an important opportunity to come together as a community to remember all those who served and those who were lost. In particular, it is a time for us to remember the men and women of our community who gave so much on our behalf. This year I was honoured to attend two of the services held on the Bellarine, the Dawn Service at Queenscliff and then on to Portarlington for their commemoration. Anzac Day is always a moving and significant time when we pay our respects to soldiers who have served in previous wars and who are currently serving overseas. It is a very special time to particularly remember men and women of our own Bellarine community and honour their service on our behalf. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact my office if there are any issues I may be able to assist you with. Hon Lisa Neville MP Member for Bellarine 5248 3462

day in the life - richard grimmett
Striking the balance A DAY in my life involves maintaining the balance between business, family and community, while trying to stay healthy in mind, body and spirit. When Philip Christian and I set up bellarine memories, we determined to include time for our own wellbeing in the business ethos. Heather and I have three children, Grace (21), James (18) and Will (16). My parents live in Drysdale and Heather’s are in Ocean Grove so it’s great to have them all nearby. Heather works for the GP Association in Geelong. She was at the Ocean Grove Pharmacy for 10 years. Grace lives in Prahran and James is on a 12 month enlistment in the Army. He’ll march out at Kapooka in a couple of weeks. On a typical day Will and I might hit the surf, or I’ll go with my friends, Paul and Nick. These mates introduced me to surfing a few years ago. We would paddle out against all odds (it seemed), crashing through winter white foam, fingers numbing. It’s a fantastic thing to do, this “something pointless and elegant” as Tim Winton writes in his novel, Breath, “as if dancing on water”. Later, Heather and I might escape with a take away coffee from the Olive Pit to park at the beach or river and chat. Sometimes we pack a thermos and go for a paddle in our double kayak. There are JumPT sessions two mornings a week with Jodie, or my weekly early morning meeting with Nev, friend and spiritual mentor. I go to Rotary every Tuesday night, a place for friendship, community and world service. Rotary has 1.2 million members in over 200 countries
Work suit or wet suit, Richard Grimmett tries to strike a balance.
with the motto Service above Self, building world peace, fighting hunger, providing disaster relief and working to eradicate polio. We arrived in Ocean Grove in 1988, after 6 months at Ayers Rock Resort where I was a hotel porter. This was the place for me to settle, having lived in Albury, Kyabram, Belgrave, Kew, Ascot Vale, Dimboola, Yulara, Colac. My father is a retired Uniting Church minister, so we moved a lot. I went to school at all of these places except Albury where I was born, and Colac where I was a tyre fitter, a salesman for farm products (Your Local Bloke from CRT), a house painter, tractor driver, farmhand plus two years in multistory construction in Melbourne’s CBD. Our early memories of Ocean Grove include Collendina Hotel, the back lounge (long gone) for Des Camm’s jazz sessions, warm evenings, and Ocean Grove Pizza pizza’s - the best then and now! Play groups and kinder as our children grew, and being part of
Surfside Uniting Church for 15 years, formed in what are now the Collendina Cricket Club rooms. We lived in Osprey Close and Ken Guyett invited me to an Apex meeting, the start of many great friendships and community projects over my 10 years in the club. In 1995 Apex combined with the Ocean Grove Festival committee to create the Ocean Grove Cup Carnival, a spectacular day of horse racing on the beach, attracting thousands to RAAFS and later Main Beach. This resulted in centre-spread pages in The Age and Herald Sun. We enlisted the help of most of the clubs in town. The idea came from a chat with my neighbour Denis Walters, a long time local who started the Collendina Cup, a zany day of dress-ups, champagne breakfasts and beach horse races. The best thing about Ocean Grove is our fantastic foreshore and beach. If I had a shop I’d sell coffee, books, iPhones, surf wax and
guitar strings. Never change The Voice, just ad an iPhone App! The issue for the future of the town will be to maintain strong community in managing growth. I am glad we have The Voice to help maintain that vital connectedness. Philip Christian and I
created something unique when we established bellarine memories. We were able to turn a vision into a business for life’s significant occasions - funerals, weddings, celebrations, and story telling. We design relevant and meaningful events in a changing world.

Jane studied at Melbourne University and became an Audiologist eight years ago. She completed a Bachelor of Health Sciences with Honours and a Post Graduate Diploma of Audiology. a great deal of satisfaction from helping to improve people’s quality of life through his professional work.
Jane says “I had an interest in acoustics and hearing impairment for many years before becoming an Audiologist eight years ago. My father has a severe to profound hearing loss, which gave me an insight into the challenges and effects impairment can have on a person. Working in hearing care is a satisfying and challenging career because we need to understand and then identify the hearing concerns of our clients to ensure we can support and assist them. Being able to help a client hear with the use of hearing aids is very rewarding – and a privilege.”
When he isn’t working, he participates in competitive road and mountain bike riding. He has been doing this for 15
years, as well as enjoying social rides with friends along the coast and through the You Yangs. He enjoys spending time with his family and hits a round of golf from time to time. Tony says “I have had an interest in hearing impairment for many years. I get great fulfillment from being able to help people regain their communication and relationships with the use of their hearing aids and improve their quality of life.”

Bluesman Dutch fills Chicken Shop BLUES fans were treated to a visit from the father of Australian blues, Dutch Tilders, who played at the Chicken Shop on Saturday night. The gruff-voiced finger picking mentor of many lived up to his reputation for guitar skill - and humour along the way. With over 50 years of performing and the ability to name drop most under the table, Dutch could probably have turned up and chatted all night. But far from pedestrian, this man still gets off by playing the blues - really well.

Embers tread the path of greats The Dying Embers are rolling out a smoke show at The Ocean Grove Hotel next month. Once the premier venue for local Australian acts, the hotel has seen the likes of Midnight Oil, Jimmy Barnes and Tina Turner in its past. The Dying Embers are the “lifes work” of Canadian born singer/songwriter James Pender. From the icy hills of Canada to the salty shores of the Bellarine Peninsula in Australia, The Dying Embers now based in Ocean Grove, have indeed travelled from afar, and as Pender re-ignites his Embers machine deep beneath the Southern Cross, the smoke won’t settle until the lights go down. Described as Rock n Roll with a pinch of disaster, The Dying Embers not only hold a torch for clever lyrics, hip shakin’ rhythms and an incredibly upbeat salute to life, they possess an uncanny ability to create and perform songs that speak for themselves, as if every note were a dying breath of an untold story. In an era of a billion bands, vagabonds and dreams The
Clubs meet
Embers are destined to burn hotter and shine brighter than any other, and whether it be beneath the Northern Lights of Canada, beneath the Southern Cross of Australia or below the crooked moon of a smoke filled night, James Pender and his fabulous Dying Embers are a band on fire indeed. Following their successful debut Cd “Lazy Mutinado” released in Canada and available on iTunes, The Embers are soon to be releasing their anticipated follow up CD slated for 2010. With an exciting new Australian line up and a match to the can, James Pender, Cam Robertson, Patrick Shawcross and Robert William Hensel III are leaving no stone unturned and no stage standing on their crusade to spread the word and gather more Embers to fan the mighty flames. Join the band at The Ocean Grove Hotel on May 1. The music starts at 6pm and the Embers are on at 10.30pm. * Did you attend one of the great shows of the past? Local firm backing lifeline LOCAL firm Bellarine Memories has continued its founding commitment to support the Bellarine Police Community Support Register, handing over a cheque for $1,500 last week. The cheque was presented to the Police and to the Chairman Phil Green at the Ocean Grove Police Station by Richard Grimmett of Bellarine Memories. The Support Register was started in October 2006 and has 1,800 registrants. Although it is most useful to the elderly and infirm everyone is eligible to register their details. Phil Green, chairman of the pioneering Support Register said: “This donation by Bellarine Memories will be instrumental in ensuring the program of providing enhanced feelings of security in the elderly, housebound, and disabled members of our community is able to continue. We only exist through the generosity of such sponsors and we are a vital factor in the feelings of well-being in our community. “The much needed money comes at an opportune time as we would really like to attract more registrants to our free service. Anyone wishing to join can obtain a registration form by phoning us on 5255 3968 Monday to Friday 9.30am to 12 noon”. “Bellarine Memories was our founding sponsor and the Register may not have been able to commence without their generous on-going support”, Mr Green said. Mr Grimmett runs Bellarine Memories with Philip Christian. He said that they had originally learnt about the project at a Rotary meeting. “It is a very worthy project and we saw straight away that it was worth supporting.” Acting Senior Sergeant Shane Madigan praised the service and Bellarine Memories involvement, adding that it was of great assistance to officers.

Things to do in the Grove this winter
No excuse to hibernate With the winter months approaching some of us are getting ready to hibernate until September with complaints of it being too cold, or that Ocean Grove is a summer town and there is nothing to do. However The Voice is here to stave off your winter blues with plenty of things to see and do about town. Anything but staying under the doona for three months…Carly Helweg reports
Yoga can be a great way to get in tune with your body and become more flexible with different yoga outlets in Ocean Grove. Take in the calming ocean views from the Kyo Yoga studio or join a class at the Surfside Centre. Organised Groups and Activities There are plenty of organised activities around town to get you out there learning a skill and meeting new people. A list of groups that meet in and around Ocean Grove on a regular basis to partake in activities from fly fishing to stamp collecting is included on the ‘Clubs Meet’ page of the Ocean Grove Voice. Also keep an eye out in The Voice or head into the Neighbourhood Centre on The Parade to find out about up-and-coming activities to challenge your mind and body. Providing Ocean Grove citizens with activities to help stay in touch with the community, RSL, Probus, Senior Citizens, Lions and Rotary all meet throughout the week and welcome new members. The Southern Ocean Union of Longboarders or SOUL runs competitions throughout the year giving keen surfers
the chance to have a go in a friendly atmosphere. Places With cheaper books available to buy and the emergence of their online counterparts, the humble local library is slowly becoming a forgotten resource. However this winter why not blow the dust off your library card and visit our cosy book centre on Presidents Avenue. Hire out a bestseller or two and snuggle down at home for a read. The best part about it....it’s free! Ocean Grove has some cosy corners to indulge in a glass of wine and a hearty winter meal. Take advantage of not needing to fight for a table in the winter months and settle next to the fire at 7th Wave or The Mex, tuck into a perfect steak at The Bark Hut or just sit back and watch the crashing waves from the warmth and comfort of The Dunes. If you haven’t yet, take advantage of an award winning winery in our backyard by visiting Oakdene and trying out a local drop to warm you up. Ocean Grove is emerging as a music and arts hub for local talent and no one is a bigger supporter of local acts than the Piping Hot Chicken Shop. Keep an eye out on our What’s
Supporting your teams Ocean Grove is full of talented sporting teams that can always use your support. Pull out your footy scarf and warm your nose over a hot pie whilst cheering on the Grubbers at Reserve on a Saturday and wander over the road to do the same for the Netballers. Then zip over to Shell Road to support the Surfside Waves soccer teams who play on Sat and Sun. There are plenty of things to do about town when the weather turns sour but even if none of these appeal then at least head down to the Terrace to pick up a movie and a pizza to make your hibernation more enjoyable and Ocean Grove friendly. • If you have any top tips for beating the winter blues contact us at news@oceangrove.com

Fitness There’s no excuse to pack on the winter kilos with many of these indoor fitness options and what’s a better way to beat away the cold by getting a sweat up? Join the gym and get moving by yourself or with a personal trainer at Ocean View Health Club or the Bellarine Aquatic Centre. If weights and the
treadmill isn’t your thing, both offer group classes set to music that many find more entertaining. Contours at the corner of The Terrace and Hodgson Street offers a women only environment to help motivate and encourage for those uncomfortable in a normal gym setting. Join a group to meet new people whilst getting some exercise. At the Surfside Centre on a Friday night you’ll find the OG volleyball association setting up their nets for some friendly competition. During the week there is also indoor basketball, netball and cricket with teams that are always looking for new members. We campaigned so hard for our very own pool so if you haven’t used it yet now is the time. Having an indoor pool means you can swim laps, partake in water aerobics or just splash about in the shallows all year round so get out the bathers and goggles you packed away after summer and get swimming. Why not make use of everything Club Grove has to offer and become a member? Join a bowls team for fitness or pleasure and then enjoy the social side of things after you’re done on the greens.

Rather than getting in the water, you could just get on the water and hire a kayak, windsurfer or stand-up paddle board. Cruise down the Barwon River to see it from its best angle and if you have a bit more spare cash or a convenient friend, hire a boat and do it in style. Grab a rod and bait and head down to the river or beach to catch a salmon, trevally or snapper for dinner. Recreational fishing licenses can be bought onsite at the Ocean Grove Pitstop BP, Bellarine Sports or Hendy’s cycles. Get back in touch with your youth by grabbing a skateboard and heading down to the skate park on Shell Road to hang out with the grommets and impress them with your best half pipe trick. Just be careful, the park is made of concrete.

Freestyle Get out there and find your own fun. We have plenty of natural resources available to us so why not use them all year round? We automatically think of our beautiful beaches but there is also the Barwon River, Grubb Road Nature Reserve and plenty of open ovals and parks to utilise. The dog needs its exercise all year round so use the quieter months to make the most of what Ocean Grove has to offer without the tourist crowds and at times when leashes aren’t needed on the beach. Tucked away in the back corner of the town, behind Woodlands estate on Grubb road is a little pocket of nature with endless walking and riding tracks to explore and a chance to try and find some local flora and fauna along the way. Head to one of our many surf shops in town and hire a surfboard. As much as the idea of getting into the cold ocean might not appeal to a first-time surfer, quite often the water is warmer than the air temperature in the colder months and winter wetsuits (I’ve been told) do a better job at keeping you warm than a non-surfer can imagine.

environment
A resilient and costly import NATURE watch this week concerns rabbits. The handsome feral rabbit on this page was photographed near the Look Out at Ocean Grove Beach during the summer. Domesticated rabbits arrived in Australia with the first fleet. The first feral populations appeared in Australia from the release of domestic rabbits in south-eastern Tasmania. In 1859, on Christmas Day, a gentleman named Thomas Austin released 24 rabbits that he had shipped over from England at his property known as ‘Barwon Park’ (near Winchelsea), so that he and his friends could partake in rabbit hunting. I don’t think that Thomas Austin and his friends were very good hunters! This event created a rabbit
population explosion, so much so that by 1886 rabbits were widespread throughout Victoria. In fact rabbits became so destructive to the environment that some Victorian farms had to be abandoned in the 1880’s. By 1900 rabbits had reached Western Australia and the Northern Territory. By 1926 there were ten billion rabbits in Australia! A single pair of rabbits can produce offspring from 3-4 months of age, and give birth to litters of 4-7 young. A mature female rabbit (known as a doe) can be continuously pregnant for 6-8 months per year under favourable conditions. A single pair of rabbits can produce 30-40 young (known as kittens) a year. The key to the success of the rabbit in Australia is the warren or burrow,
which provides protection from weather and predators and enables rabbits to exist in dry environments. Compared with Europe and America, Australian rabbits have few predators such as ferrets and weasels which kill rabbits within their warrens. Rabbits can be very destructive to the environment. They eat many types of plants and can cause the extinction of native vegetation. They dig burrows in the soil and cause soil erosion. They also can cause the loss of native animal species such as bilbies and bandicoots when they consume their nutritional sources. Rabbits can also reduce the food source available for grazing animals. Ten rabbits eat as much as one sheep, so the more rabbits that are present, the less food is available for farming creatures. Millions of dollars are spent each year in Australia to control rabbit populations. Prior to the introduction of
myxomatosis, efforts to manage rabbit populations were generally inefficient. Poisoning, fencing and various forms of biological control were tried with little success. CSIRO’s predecessor, CSIR, conducted initial trials that ultimately resulted in the successful release of the myxomatosis virus in 1950 in Australia. The disease initially wiped out 99 per cent of infected rabbits in Australia, which was an unbelievable result, especially for landowners who had been battling rabbit outbreaks for decades. By the late 1950s, resistance to the myxomatosis virus was starting to build up in Australia’s rabbits. The virus became less effective and rabbit numbers increased, but never to pre1950 levels. Therefore other methods to reduce numbers had to be found. In 1996 the rabbit calicivirus was released in Australia after it was

found to be safe in native animal populations such as koalas, wombats and echidnas. By September all State and Territory governments had agreed to the release of the virus. New South Wales was the first State to act, releasing 20 infected rabbits on a property south of Wagga Wagga in October 1996. Since the release of the virus, scientists have been monitoring the number of rabbits, native plants and animals by taking samples from a number of areas and then estimating the size of the populations. They have seen a dramatic reduction in rabbit numbers, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions of Australia. But in cooler, more humid areas the results have been less effective. Wallington and Drysdale seem to have healthy rabbit populations. Other methods of reducing rabbit numbers include shooting, the destruction of warrens and the erection of rabbit proof fencing. My friend’s husband blows up rabbit warrens using explosives in his profession as a rural environmental consultant. Poor bunnies! Next time you see feral rabbits, you can think about their incredible breeding skills, the destruction that they cause, the money that is spent on controlling them, and their amazing resilience! Happy Christmas Mr Thomas Austin in 1859! By Jenny Carr
We conserve, present and enhance the natural & developed coastal environs for the enjoyment and use of all
BARWON COAST
Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. Centre Toilet Block, Ocean Grove Another major project for Barwon Coast has been working on is the redevelopment of the Ocean Grove Main Beach amenity block. The existing building is to be demolished and replaced with a new facility on a smaller footprint using environmentally sustainable products and reduced energy inputs. Best practice building design standards will be applied in regard to water and energy conservation. Rainwater will be collected and stored in a 100,000 litre underground tank and should provide for 70% of the annual water used for toilet flushing. The building design aims to maximise the natural lighting of the internal areas whilst providing facilities in line with current numbers. The immediate area around the building will be lowered and the building moved inland by over 5 metres. Tenders for the project have now closed and are currently under review with an announcement on the successful tenderer to be made by the end of April It is proposed to demolish the existing block in May and have the new block completed prior to next summer. Although Barwon Coast and the appointed builders will work together to minimise the interruptions to beach users during the construction period, there will obviously be some inconvenience for a period of up to 6 months. Rip Curl Pro at 13th Beach We were delighted to be able to assist the organisers of the Annual Easter Bells Beach Rip Curl Pro surfing event in holding one day of their event at 13th Beach due to poor surfing conditions at Bells Beach and Johanna The day was fairly full on for both event organisers and Barwon Coast staff keeping an eye on environmental and cultural impacts to the area with such a major movement of equipment, and event vehicles including TV coverage, all at short notice. With well managed traffic control, single lane traffic could pass through the event area with minimal delay despite the vast amount of spectator vehicles and pedestrians Rip Curl Pro organisers were very mindful of these potential impacts with a view to
minimising the events footprint and promoted Barwon Coast's environmental messages throughout the day. By all accounts the days surfing event was a great success with minimal impact to our coastal environment. Hodgson St Car Park The draft masterplan for the proposed upgrade of the car park at the bottom of Hodgson St Ocean Grove has been on display on site seeking community feedback. This location being a very popular access point to the ocean beach being adjacent to the beach area where dogs are permitted under effective control and where picnic tables are provided for great views of the coast. The pedestrian cycling trail from Collendina thru to Barwon Heads along the coast also adjoins the car park. The Barwon Coast Committee has now resolved to lodge the plans with the Department of Sustainability & Environment for Coastal Management Act consent, prior to construction later this year. Dogs on Beaches Please remember that until the end of April, dogs are required to be on a leash on most local beaches. Dogs are however permitted under effective control east of 13W Hodgson St Ocean Grove towards Collendina. Effective control is when your dog is within your sight and can be controlled by voice command. If your dog does not respond to your voice then it is not under effective control “Scoop the Poop” is a must to ensure that your dogs waste does not compromise our coastal environment. Use the free bags that we provide at many beach access points and help keep our beaches clean. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 137 Bob Jordan General Manager Barwon Coast, Ewing Blyth Drive, Barwon Heads office@barwoncoast.com.au

New trader with an eye on our changing demographics
Gillian McCallum has taken over Lilly Bliss and changed it into a lingerie shop.
What women want GILLIAN McCallum is the new owner of Lilly Bliss and has transformed the previous clothing shop to Lilly Bliss Lingerie offering a wide range of lingerie, sleepwear, shapewear, leisurewear, swimwear, mastectomy and maternity supplies. “While women of all ages are catered for I will also specialise in hard to fit sizes, together with an extremely high quality range of mastectomy and maternity products. “I offer a professional fitting service, knowing that approximately 80% of women are wearing bras that are poorly fitted or are the incorrect size,” said Gillian. “Customer service is my number one priority. “I run the business myself and while I am there all the time, I have two assistants who will both also be professionally trained in both bra fitting and mastectomy
fitting in the near future. “I have been involved in retail for 25 years, all in either pharmacy or women’s wear.” Gillian has lived on the Bellarine Peninsula for 35 years. She says all her demographic results showed that the Bellarine Peninsula, in particular Ocean Grove is the place to establish a new business such as Lilly Bliss Lingerie. “Those results clearly show that Ocean Grove and the Bellarine Peninsula have a growth rate almost double the annual Victorian average, with particular pleasing results in the above 40 age group. “I am hopeful that not only will Lilly Bliss Lingerie appeal to Ocean Grove and Barwon Head’s residents but see no reason why it should not appeal to all areas of the Bellarine Peninsula. “With Geelong getting more difficult by the day to make a
shopping trip pleasurable with traffic and parking, Ocean Grove is the complete opposite.” Gillian opened the shop on Easter Saturday, and she says the results have so far been pleasing. “When initially stocking a new shop such as mine, it is extremely difficult to get your stock 100% correct against what people actually want. “Sales so far have given me the opportunity to order more stock in specific lines and brands, as sales and further enquiries in these areas have been above expectation. “My main aim for the first 12 months is to really establish Lilly Bliss Lingerie as a place where women of all ages will feel comfortable dealing with both my staff and myself, eventually leading to both my established and new customers seeing no reason to go anywhere else for fittings of the range of products

I offer. “As my priorities and the time frame involved in taking over the business were extremely tight, I had no opportunity to advertise the fact that Lilly Bliss Lingerie was opening. Now being able to concentrate in that area, I want to get involved with both the Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads Netball clubs, and other women’s sporting groups on the Peninsula. “Away from work I love gardening, and see my garden as a case of continual improvement. I love walking with my labrador Bella, but I think whatever enjoyment I get she enjoys more and I get the feeling that she would walk all day if I did.” “I also have an affinity with elderly people whom I deal with on a private basis regularly, and enjoy visits that I have quite often to nursing and retirement homes.”

Storms aggressive full court pressure allowed them to capitalise on the mistakes made from the Craigieburn team. Playing with discipline and intensity the Home team never gave the visitors a chance. Well done girls, a great team effort by all. Fridays win will hopefully give the girls a shot of

Bellarines ability to fill the lanes in offence and their red hot trap defence set them up early in the game and there was no looking back despite a three minute sleep in the third quarter. awesome blocking pair which held Phantoms at bay for some of the game. Team Wave are coming along better each week and are getting their focus on the task at hand. Which is good to see against a team who has State League players in their team. Good

rip curl pro at 13th beach
Locals have a yarn with Slater at Possos
William Dickson was one of the lucky 13th Beach Groms chosen to be board caddies for the pros - here with 2001 World Champion CJ Hobgood.
Beacon saves the day
A FEW lucky locals got the chance to see the world’s best surfers in action when the Rip Curl Pro was moved from Bells near Torquay to Beacon at 13th Beach in a bid to find some lacking surf. This was the first time the event had been held at 13th since 1976 and the organisers worked with the local boardriders who ran a sausage sizzle/breakfast and groms were
invited to be board caddies for the pros. The organisers ran most of the 2nd round at the popular local break and said afterwards that the venue had worked well. “We were very happy with the day at 13th and we saw some great surfing through Round 2,” said Dane Sharp of Rip Curl. “The waves picked up throughout the day and we were looking at solid waves by the
afternoon. “It was great to see the young 13th groms involved and that is one major initiative of Rip Curl’s, wherever we go - local involvement. “We always want to make sure the local surfing community is happy with our plans/ actions and any involvement we can get is great.”

Locals Trent Myers and Ryan Jamieson lived every surfer’s dream last Monday when they found themselves in the waves at Point Impossible with Kelly Slater. The 2010 Rip Curl Pro champion had stayed back after the competition to make the most of a new swell that had just hit the surf coast. “We were in the car park and saw him getting changed so we decided to hit it even though the waves weren’t that great,” Trent said. “It’s not everyday you get to surf with a nine times world champ like Slater.” The boys spent about 45 minutes in the water with the iconic surfer and were impressed by his display. The moment only got better for Trent and Ryan when they went up to the car park to get changed and got to chat with their hero. “He seemed pretty relaxed, probably because he was out the spotlight,” Trent said. “There weren’t many people around so we got to talk about the comp and where he was off to next, it was a pretty amazing experience.”

Mark Neeld throws the ball up for the bounce at Ocean Grove on Saturday.
MARK Neeld pulled on boots again at the Memorial Ground. The former Grove coach and now assistant at Collingwood umpired a Grove and Newtown Chilwell under 16 game as part of an AFL initiative - ‘Umpiring is Everyone’s Business’ - to recruit more officials. Joining him was 16 year old Joanna Mousley, a Geelong Football Umpires League member. “There is an annual turnover of umpires of between 20 to 25 per cent each year with the majority of those umpires leaving due to poor, abusive and negative match day environments. We hope to show everyone in the football community that umpiring is everyone’s business, without umpires we don’t have a game,” said Mark.

cobras
Cobras face tough grading starts Cobras Round 1 Under 12 Orange Rnd 1 What a tough assignment for the opening round! The Cobras Orange side up against St Albans and some of the biggest under 12 kids in the WORLD. Led by Sam Beasley and Ethan Bell the boys tried their guts out all day but were out muscled and out played by a superior opponent. It was great to see Oliver Monteith and Zane Leist using their silky skills along with some courageous efforts by Joel Ness and Lachlan Madden. Luke Fisher and Thomas Smith showed great strength and attack on the ball and big Blake Schwartz was dangerous in front of goal. The last quarter was fantastic and showed there are better things to come as we develop as a team oriented side. Cobras Orange 1.4.10 St Albans 17.12.114 Goals: B. Schwartz 1 Best : O.Monteith, J.Ness, L.Madden, Z.Leist, L.Fisher, T.Smith
Under 12 White Rnd 1 The season opener started in spectacular fashion for the boys with early goals from Riley Maloney and Kyle Meyer plus 2 strong marks across half back by big Reed Jordon. The 2nd quarter saw Leopold bounce back but inaccurate kicking let them down. A purple patch from Ned Weatherly with 2 snaps and a mark and goal saw the White side dominate in the 3rd quarter along with some great team work and clearances from Owen Holmer, Hamish Drake and Wilzen Crawford. The final quarter saw some great team play, strong tackles and shephards which led to the forwards banging on 5 more goals in what became a comfortable win. Cobras White 11.4.70 Leopold Lions 1.11.17 Best: N.Weatherly, O.Holmer, R.Maloney, R.Jordon, W.Crawford, H.Drake Under 14 (2) Rnd 1 In a tough, hard fought battle which saw the majority of the game fought out between the half back and half forward lines, the Cobras, led
by Hugh Attard, tried all day. James Hodder roved well to Hugh Attard in the ruck while Mitchell Lindkvist looked really dangerous in front of goal. The Cobras persistence couldn’t be doubted and there is plenty of good footy to come out of this side as the season progresses. Cobras 1.1.7 Leopold 5.5.35 Goals: M.Lindkvist Best: H.Attard, J.Hodder, M.Lindkvist Under 14 (1) The boys first game saw them come up against a bigger stronger and faster team in St Albans. Although comprehensively beaten, the boys tried hard right up until the end and no heads dropped. Josh Pendergast was a revelation on the wing and James Teague showed glimpses of his talent on the other wing. James Stirling, Harry Walker and Curtly Balshaw played their hearts out in defence under a constant barrage of attacks. In the midfield Nick Murphy, Christian West,
Zac Ramsay and Andy Douglas all won plenty of the ball. In a few weeks time, with more training and game time together we will gel into a good side. Cobras 0.4.4 St Albans 14.16.100 Under 12 Blue Rnd 1 The Cobras Blue launched a spirited showing in their round one clash against Leopold Gold at Ervin reserve on Saturday. The natural speed and agility from Spencer Luppino provided the centre clearances for the cobras in the first ¼. Harry Unkenstein read the play well on the wing, while Nicholas Giblin contested the ball with great determination. Cody Richardson slowed the attack from the Leopold lions with some great tackles on the wing in the last ¼. Goal Kickers: Liam Mc Manus 1, Byron Taylor 1. Best Players: Cody Richardson, Spencer Luppino, Harry Unkenstein, Nicholas Giblin.

OCEAN Grove have secured their second win of the year by defeating Geelong Amateur at the Memorial Reserve on Saturday, writes Mathew Gibbs. Coming off the back of a monster 229-point win the previous week against Bell Park, the Grubbers were 1-1 and the Ammos 2-0. That said, the game was predicted to be a close and well fought battle. The Grubbers were particularly jovial as they lined up arm in arm before the start of the match, and were ready to go from the first bounce. The game was fast paced from the get go; an errant free kick of the ball gave the Grubbers an early goal. They then continued to apply scoring pressure and took the lead early in a physical game where many free kicks were given away.
Aaron Habgood took a strong contested grab up forward and kicked truly to give Grove some breathing space before the first break. Coach Matt Tyrell was very vocal at quarter time, and the message was clear – go hard at the footy. Ocean Grove’s dominance of general play seemingly didn’t count on the scoreboard and a couple of minutes into the second quarter, the Ammos had hit the lead. However, Habgood goaled again soon after to even back up the game. Approaching time on, Sean Britt roved the pack well in the Grubbers forward line and goaled to put the boys 3 goals up, yet by the long break the margin had been reduced to just 13 points and it was anybody’s game.
Joel Woolhouse kicked a miraculous snap around the shoulder to start the second half with a bang, before the Ammos bounced back and kept the game in the balance. Sam McColl then scored from long range to keep Geelong Amateur at bay. Heading into the final stages of the penultimate quarter, the Grubbers were up by five goals and looking like a good thing. The last quarter wasn’t really one for scoring, however it was Sam O’Connor who sealed the game with a roving goal, which put Grove 6 goals up and the game result virtually decided. Ammos kicked a couple of late goals to save some face, but it was all too little too late. In the end, it was a great 26-point win to the Grubbers which puts them in 4th place on the ladder
with 2 wins, going into their next match against South Barwon at Grinter Reserve. Matt Tyrrell.
UNDER 18 coach Matt Tyrrell remains an integral part of the fabric of the Ocean Grove Football Club, writes Mark Heenan. The dual Grubber senior premiership player in 2000 and 2001, has built up an impressive football resume after leading the Ocean Grove Under 18 team to back-to-back flags in 2008 and 2009. Tyrrell, 31, affectionately known as Tissa, was recently appointed the Bellarine Football League (BFL) Under 18 Interleague coach for 2010, replacing Rodney Grant who left the role after six years at the helm. The former Grubbers ruckman is relishing the opportunity to coach after retiring in 2004 with recurring hamstring injuries and a left knee complaint. “I had no aspirations to coach while I was playing,” A surprised Tyrrell recalls. “I have definitely come out of my shell since I have retired – I’m more an extrovert now, I was pretty quiet when I played.” Tyrell, who is kept busy as the Ocean Grove senior runner on match days, now has aspirations to coach at a higher level. “I would like to stay involved with Ocean Grove Football Club and look forward to those opportunities – but it would be great to work with the Geelong Falcons in a coaching capacity,” he said. Football Geelong Operations Manager
Michael Limb said Tyrrell had displayed some fantastic qualities at Ocean Grove, ultimately leading to him securing the role as BFL Under 18 Interleague coach. “Matt has a great communication level with all his players at Ocean Grove,” Limb said. “One of the things that worked in his favour was his knowledge of the other players from other clubs in the BFL.” Ocean Grove senior coach Cameron McGregor believes Tyrrell connects well with all players, especially the younger Grubbers. “His relationship with the younger guys is fantastic, they all idolise Tissa and want to play under him at Ocean Grove,” McGregor said. “He coaches very different to myself – he is more of a motivator type of coach.” Tyrrell insists he likes to be assertive with players and admits his coaching style varies to McGregor’s tactical approach. “Cam is more strategic than myself I’m really assertive with my players and I will bring them aside and give them a spray if I need to,” Tyrrell said. The Under 18 BFL Interleague team will play in a round robin style competition against the Bendigo and Murray Football Leagues on Saturday May 22 in Bendigo. Outside of football, Tyrrell works as an electrician with Couchman Electrical.

Full of fighting spirit THE GRUBBERS put up a gallant fight but it was not enough to capture the valuable four points against BFL flag favourites Geelong Amateur on Saturday at Ocean Grove. Ocean Grove 13.16.94 who went down to Amateur 16.11.107, had numerous inside forward 50 entries in the final quarter but failed to convert on the scoreboard. The Grubbers’ narrow loss follows their eightpoint defeat to 2009 premiers Drysdale in Round one. Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor admitted his side’s lack lusture second quarter where Geelong Amateur kicked four late goals to end the first half was a key factor in the 13-point loss. “That is what we certainly spoke about at half time about falling asleep (late in the second quarter) for 10 minutes,” McGregor said. “We are physically fit enough and strong enough against the bigger sides. “It is just the mental side of it - I think against Drysdale we dozed off two or three times which ultimately cost us the points at the end of the day.” However McGregor praised his players for winning the stoppages and nullifying the impact of Geelong Amateur’s allconquering midfield. “I think we probably won the stoppages today, which again is little bit of a surprise,” he said. “When you look at it
when (James) Dalton is the only midfielder from last year still playing at the club and without Rowan O’Callaghan in there to win the stoppages is a massive bonus for us.” Ocean Grove vicecaptain James McTaggart was instrumental in the first half and had the ball on a string and finished the game with two goals. The home side also had more scoring shots than Amateur in front of goal 29 to 27. The Grubbers had an even spread of goal kickers youngster Patrick West booted three majors, while Wayde Piec and Sam Fairway each kicked two goals. Former GFL Leopold forward and new Amateur recruit Jason Tom booted five goals, while utility Michael Sleeman and Mark Etheridge played significant roles for the visitors. After the match Geelong Amateur playing coach Travis Robertson praised
the young Grubbers’ ability to run the game out and their superior match fitness levels. Amateur were without Robertson after he injured his calf in Round one against Queenscliff and reigning BFL Les Ash medallist Lindsay Smith who missed the game with a corked hip. “They (Ocean Grove) were really impressive and I had a good chat to Cameron McGregor and I said ‘he has a good bunch of kids there’,” said Robertson, who coached his team from the sidelines and aims to return to the field by Round eight. “We were conscious we were coming down to play a youthful side with exuberance and they certainly did that and they served it right up to us. “Realistically, we are not probably as fit as these blokes (Ocean Grove) are, we knew we had to rotate a lot of players on and off the bench – we got through 55 rotations which was pleasing.” The Grubbers next match is against
Newcomb this Saturday at Grinter Reserve. The game starts at 2:10pm. 13.16-94 Ocean Grove defeated by 16.11-107 Geelong Amateur Ocean Grove Goal Kickers: P. West 3, W. Piec 2, S. Fairway 2, J. McTaggart 2, D. Maloney, T. Gavin , B. Lynch , B. Wilkinson
